Numerous organisations collect data in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), but they are rarely analysed together due to different program objectives, methods, and data quality. We developed a weighted spatio-temporal Bayesian model and used it to integrate image-based hard-coral data collected by professional and citizen scientists, who captured and/or classified underwater images. We used the model to predict coral cover across the GBR with estimates of uncertainty; thus filling gaps in space and time where no data exist. Additional data increased the model's predictive ability by 43%, but did not affect model inferences about pressures (e.g. bleaching and cyclone damage). Thus, effective integration of professional and high-volume citizen data could enhance the capacity and cost-efficiency of monitoring programs. This general approach is equally viable for other variables collected in the marine environment or other ecosystems; opening up new opportunities to integrate data and provide pathways for community engagement/stewardship.

Aesthetic value, or beauty, is important to the relationship between humans and natural environments and is, therefore, a fundamental socio-economic attribute of conservation alongside other ecosystem services. However, beauty is difficult to quantify and is not estimated well using traditional approaches to monitoring coral-reef aesthetics. To improve the estimation of ecosystem aesthetic values, we developed and implemented a novel framework used to quantify features of coral-reef aesthetics based on people's perceptions of beauty. Three observer groups with different experience to reef environments (Marine Scientist, Experienced Diver and Citizen) were virtually immersed in Australian's Great Barrier Reef (GBR) using 360° images. Perceptions of beauty and observations were used to assess the importance of eight potential attributes of reef-aesthetic value. Among these, heterogeneity, defined by structural complexity and colour diversity, was positively associated with coral-reef-aesthetic values. There were no group-level differences in the way the observer groups perceived reef aesthetics suggesting that past experiences with coral reefs do not necessarily influence the perception of beauty by the observer. The framework developed here provides a generic tool to help identify indicators of aesthetic value applicable to a wide variety of natural systems. The ability to estimate aesthetic values robustly adds an important dimension to the holistic conservation of the GBR, coral reefs worldwide and other natural ecosystems.

Outbreaks of Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (CoTS), Acanthaster planci, are a major cause of coral decline on the Great Barrier Reef, second only to cyclones. Although various models have been developed in the past to assist management decision making, most of these models were cohort-based deterministic descriptions with little inclusion of parameter and individual uncertainties, or they were structured around a generic ecological modelling framework, or they were not calibrated with observational data. A major challenge of statistical modelling occurs when estimation of the likelihood is computationally expensive or even intractable. However, approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) can be a convenient solution to this problem. In this study, we developed a semi-individual agent-based model for CoTS. Unlike previous models, this model amalgamated a species specific individual-based process model with statistical methods of parameter estimation, namely replenishment ABC (RABC) and ABC-rejection. This Bayesian modelling framework facilitates quantification of the uncertainty in parameter estimation while the individual-based aspect of the model enables it to take into account individual variation in life histories. In this relatively complex setting and in the absence of an informative prior, ABC-rejection was unable to efficiently estimate the posterior distribution of model parameters within a reasonable time frame. In contrast, RABC demonstrated promising results in estimating model parameters. The results of posterior predictive checks showed that most observations were within the 95% predicted intervals. Therefore, the semi-individual agent-based model developed in this study showed promising ability to accurately predict the general population trends at the three locations studied. Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration is causing increased absorption of CO2 by the world’s oceans, in turn driving a decline in seawater pH and changes in ocean carbonate chemistry that are collectively referred to as ocean acidification. Evidence is accumulating to suggest ocean acidification may directly or indirectly affect many marine organisms and ecosystems, some of which may also hold significant social and economic value to the Australian community. This report card aims to provide a brief overview of the current state of scientific knowledge regarding the process of ocean acidification; current and future projected levels of ocean acidification; and, observed and projected impacts of current and future predicted levels of ocean acidification on marine organisms and ecosystems in the region. This Report Card also briefly discusses potential social and economic implications, policy challenges, and the key knowledge gaps needing to be addressed.

Adjusting the light exposure and capture of their symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates (genus Symbiodinium Freud.) is central to the success of reef-building corals (order Scleractinia) across high spatio-temporal variation in the light environment of coral reefs. We tested the hypothesis that optical properties of tissues in some coral species can provide light management at the tissue scale comparable to light modulation by colony architecture in other species. We compared within-tissue scalar irradiance in two coral species from the same light habitat but with contrasting colony growth forms: branching Stylophora pistillata and massive Lobophyllia corymbosa. Scalar irradiance at the level of the symbionts (2 mm into the coral tissues) were <10% of ambient irradiance and nearly identical for the two species, despite substantially different light environments at the tissue surface. In S. pistillata, light attenuation (90% relative to ambient) was observed predominantly at the colony level as a result of branch-to-branch self-shading, while in L. corymbosa, near-complete light attenuation (97% relative to ambient) was occurring due to tissue optical properties. The latter could be explained partly by differences in photosynthetic pigment content in the symbiont cells and pigmentation in the coral host tissue. Our results demonstrate that different strategies of light modulation at colony, polyp, and cellular levels by contrasting morphologies are equally effective in achieving favorable irradiances at the level of coral photosymbionts.
