Despite the substantial economic impact of Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens on legume production worldwide, the genetic basis of its pathogenicity and potential host association is poorly understood. The production of high-quality reference genome assemblies of C. flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens strains associated with different hosts sheds light on the genetic basis of its pathogenic variability and host association. Moreover, the study of recent outbreaks of bacterial wilt and microevolution of the pathogen in Australia requires access to high-quality reference genomes that are sufficiently closely related to the population being studied within Australia. We provide the first genome assemblies of C. flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens strains associated with mungbean and soybean, which revealed high variability in their plasmid composition. The analysis of C. flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens genomes revealed an extensive suite of carbohydrate-active enzymes potentially associated with pathogenicity, including four carbohydrate esterases, 50 glycoside hydrolases, 23 glycosyl transferases, and a polysaccharide lyase. We also identified 11 serine peptidases, three of which were located within a linear plasmid, pCff119. These high-quality assemblies and annotations will provide a foundation for population genomics studies of C. flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens in Australia and for answering fundamental questions regarding pathogenicity factors and adaptation of C. flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens to various hosts worldwide and, at a broader scale, contribute to unraveling genomic features of gram-positive, xylem-inhabiting bacterial pathogens. The evolutionarily conserved bacterial proteins MnmE and MnmG collectively install a carboxymethylaminomethyl (cmnm) group at the fifth position of wobble uridines of several tRNA species. While the reaction catalyzed by MnmEG is one of the central steps in the biosynthesis of the methylaminomethyl (mnm) posttranscriptional tRNA modification, details of the reaction remain elusive. Glycine is known to be the source of the carboxy methylamino moiety of cmnm, and a tetrahydrofolate (THF) analog is thought to supply the one carbon that is appended to the fifth position of U. However, the nature of the folate analog remains unknown. This article reports the in vitro biochemical reconstitution of the MnmEG reaction. Using isotopically labeled methyl and methylene THF analogs, we demonstrate that methylene THF is the true substrate. We also show that reduced FAD is required for the reaction and that DTT can replace the NADH in its role as a reductant. We discuss the implications of these methylene-THF and reductant requirements on the mechanism of this key tRNA modification catalyzed by MnmEG.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is the third largest grain crop by area planted in South Africa (SA). The annual yield is negatively affected by sunflower rust caused by Puccinia helianthi Schw. (Phe). Four Phe races were described in SA in the middle 1990s, but since then, no new race descriptions have been conducted. This has resulted in an information gap on the current Phe population, making it difficult to explain increased disease incidence and loss of resistance in previously resistant hybrids. To address this, 114 Phe field isolates along with 23 historic isolates were phenotyped using the international set of 11 sunflower differentials containing the R1, R2/R10, R3, R4a, R4b, R4c, R4d, R5, Pu6, and Radv resistance genes. Three new Phe races were identified, bringing the total number of South African races recorded to seven. No avirulence was detected attributable to the R1 gene, with the R4d and Radv genes remaining effective. Four main genetic lineages were detected with no obvious correlation between phenotype and genotype. The detection of three genetic lineages consisting exclusively of field isolates collected post-2006 suggested the possible recent entry of exotic introductions into SA. This, combined with the fact that one lineage consisted exclusively of the most virulent race Phe7721, confirmed a clear shift in the Phe population that could explain the increased virulence and occurrence of the disease in SA.

Ground pearls (Hemiptera: Margarodidae), so called for their shiny spherical cyst stage, are important root-feeding pests of a broad range of plants predominantly belonging to the family Poaceae. In the tropical and subtropical regions of eastern Australia, ground pearl species cause significant damage on sugarcane and turf grasses and have been identified at multiple sites of pasture dieback in Queensland. The potential impact of ground pearls on pasture production in Australia and elsewhere is largely unknown. This paper reviews Australian and international literature on the biology and management of this poorly understood group of pests. Ground pearls have several features that make control difficult, including a resilient cyst which provides resistance to drought and excessive moisture, a relative impermeability to insecticides, and ease of dispersal through movement of soil. Ground pearls can also modulate the period of encystment to survive adverse environmental conditions, with some species capable of surviving for years while disassociated from a host. No insecticide effectively controls ground pearl cysts. Biological control agents have been identified for some species; however, these pathogens are relatively ineffective on subterranean ground pearl cysts. Cultural control methods such as cultivation and fallowing have helped to reduce ground pearl populations in sugarcane. In turf, practices that maintain plant health such as adequate irrigation and nutrition can mask signs of ground pearl infestation. The paucity of research conducted on the biology and impact of ground pearls represents a constraint to improving management of this pest.

SummaryClozapine is under-used in the UK, and Casetta et al's recent paper in the BJPsych adds to a growing number of small studies that support the use of intramuscular clozapine to initiate and maintain treatment with oral clozapine. However, intramuscular clozapine remains unlicensed and, because of the risks associated with its administration, it should be used only cautiously before it can be adopted more widely into mainstream clinical practice.

This study analysed the phenotypic and genotypic variation among 511 Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. phaseolicola (Psp) isolates, causing halo blight in mungbeans. Collected from symptomatic mungbean (Vigna radiata) crops throughout Australia between 2005 and 2018, a total of 352 Psp isolates were phenotypically screened. Our in planta screening against a set of four mungbean cultivars with known susceptible and resistant reactions revealed five distinctive pathotypes. Isolates belonging to pathotype 2 were the most prevalent at 84% and were found to be highly pathogenic towards all tested mungbean genotypes. Genomic variation was investigated for 205 isolates using DNA fingerprints, splitting the halo blight pathogen population into two broad genetic lineages. Further genetic testing for two known avirulence genes, avrPphE and avrPphF, identified the avrPphE gene in all the tested isolates and avrPphF present in all but two. To identify candidate avirulence genes unique to Psp isolates infecting mungbean in Australia, a comparative genomics study was undertaken on the whole-genome sequences of two epidemiologically important Psp isolates, T11544 and K4287. The information presented in this study has the potential to dramatically improve mungbean disease resistance now and into the future.

Bacterial wilt and tan spot of dry beans (family Fabaceae), caused by Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens, is an important emerging disease threatening the edible legume industry around the globe. The management of bacterial wilt has been a major problem since its original description in 1922. This is in part due to the seedborne nature of the pathogen allowing the bacterium to be transmitted long distances via infected seeds, as well as a lack of detailed molecular information concerning the pathogenicity repertoires and virulence determinates of the pathogen. Identification can also be difficult owing to the presence of five different colony colour variants (i.e., yellow, orange, pink, purple, and red) on culture media. In this review, we provide an overview of the aetiology, epidemiology, and management strategies of bacterial wilt disease. First, a comprehensive and comparative symptomology of the disease on different dry bean species is described. Then, the taxonomic history of the causal agent and utility of high‐throughput sequencing‐based approaches in the precise characterization of the pathogen is explained. Furthermore, we provide an updated outline on the global distribution of the pathogen, highlighting expansion of the causal agent into the areas with no history of the disease until the beginning of the current century. Finally, because there are limited options for use of conventional pesticides against the pathogen, we highlight the use of integrated pest management strategies, for example quarantine inspections, resistant cultivars, and crop sanitation, to combat the risk of bacterial wilt disease in the dry bean industry. PURPOSE Differentiation of tumor progression (TP) from pseudoprogression (PsP) is a major unmet need in post-treatment glioblastoma (GBM). 18F-Fluciclovine is a synthetic amino acid PET radiotracer with higher uptake in tumor tissue vs. areas of treatment-related change. We investigated the value of 18F-Fluciclovine PET for differentiating PsP from TP independent from and in combination with multi-parametric MRI. METHODS We prospectively enrolled 30 patients with GBM with a new or enlarging contrast-enhancing lesion on MRI after chemoradiotherapy who were planned for surgical resection of the lesion. Patients underwent pre-operative 18F-Fluciclovine PET and multi-parametric MRI. Following surgery, the relative percentages of viable tumor and therapy-related changes observed in histopathology were quantified. Patients were categorized as TP if viable tumor represented ≥ 50% of the specimen, mixed TP if < 50% and > 10%, and PsP if ≤ 10%. RESULTS 18 patients had TP, 4 had mixed TP, and 8 PsP. Patients with TP/mixed TP had a significantly higher 40-50 minutes SUVmax (6.64 + 1.88 vs 4.11± 1.52, p=0.009) and an SUVmax cut-off of 4.66 provided 90% sensitivity and 83% specificity for differentiation of TP/mixed TP from PsP (AUC=0.856). A maximum cerebral blood volume (CBVmax) cut-off of 3.67 provided 90% sensitivity and 71% specificity for differentiation of TP/mixed TP from PsP (AUC=0.779). Combining a 40-50 minutes SUVmax cut-off of 4.662 and a relative CBVmax cut-off of 3.67 provided 100% sensitivity and 80% specificity for differentiating TP/mixed TP from PsP (AUC=0.95). The time activity curve patterns and time to peaks were not different between the groups. Normalization of PET parameters to normal brain parenchyma were not helpful to differentiate the groups due to variability in radiotracer uptake in normal brain between subjects. CONCLUSION 18F-Fluciclovine PET uptake can accurately differentiate PsP from TP in GBM patients, with even more accurate differentiation achieved when combined with MRI.

Land surface phenology derived from satellite data provides insights into vegetation responses to climate change. This method has overcome laborious and time-consuming manual ground observation methods. In this study, we assessed the influence of climate on phenological metrics of rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) in South Sumatra, Indonesia, between 2010 and 2019. We modelled rubber growth through the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI), using eight-day surface reflectance images at 250 m spatial resolution, sourced from NASA’s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra and Aqua satellites. The asymmetric Gaussian (AG) smoothing function was applied on the model in TIMESAT to extract three phenological metrics for each growing season: start of season (SOS), end of season (EOS), and length of season (LOS). We then analysed the effect of rainfall and temperature, which revealed that fluctuations in SOS and EOS are highly related to disturbances such as extreme rainfall and elevated temperature. Additionally, we observed inter-annual variations of SOS and EOS associated with rubber tree age and clonal variability within plantations. The 10-year monthly climate data showed a significant downward and upward trend for rainfall and temperature data, respectively. Temperature was identified as a significant factor modulating rubber phenology, where an increase in temperature of 1 °C advanced SOS by ~25 days and EOS by ~14 days. These results demonstrate the capability of remote sensing observations to monitor the effects of climate change on rubber phenology. This information can be used to improve rubber management by helping to identify critical timing for implementation of agronomic interventions.

Bacterial Leaf Spot (BLS) is a serious bacterial disease of chilli (Capsicum spp.) caused by at least four different Xanthomonas biotypes: X. euvesicatoria pv. euvesicatoria, X. euvesicatoria pv. perforans, X. hortorum pv. gardneri, and X. vesicatoria. Symptoms include black lesions and yellow halos on the leaves and fruits, resulting in reports of up to 66% losses due to unsalable and damaged fruits. BLS pathogens are widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions. Xanthomonas is able to survive in seeds and crop residues for short periods, leading to the infections in subsequent crops. The pathogen can be detected using several techniques, but largely via a combination of traditional and molecular approaches. Conventional detection is based on microscopic and culture observations, while a suite of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) assays are available. Management of BLS is challenging due to the broad genetic diversity of the pathogens, a lack of resilient host resistance, and poor efficacy of chemical control. Some biological control agents have been reported, including bacteriophage deployment. Incorporating stable host resistance is a critical component in ongoing integrated management for BLS. This paper reviews the current status of BLS of chilli, including its distribution, pathogen profiles, diagnostic options, disease management, and the pursuit of plant resistance.

Aims and methodIn-patients on mental health wards are commonly prescribed hypnotics for the long-term management of disturbed sleep. Specific sleep disorders remain underdiagnosed and effective behavioural interventions are underused. We developed a suite of three educational interventions (a video, poster and handbook) about sleep, sleep disorders, the safe prescribing of hypnotics and use of psychological strategies (sleep hygiene and cognitive–behavioural therapy for insomnia, CBTi) using co-design and multiprofessional stakeholder involvement. This controlled before-and-after study evaluated the effectiveness of these interventions across seven in-patient psychiatric wards, examining their impact on hypnotic prescribing rates and staff confidence scores (data collected by retrospective drug chart analysis and survey respectively).ResultsA marked reduction was seen in the percentage of patients prescribed hypnotics on in-patient prescription charts (−24%), with a 41% reduction in the number of hypnotics administered per patient (mean reduction −1.142 administrations/patient).Clinical implicationsThese simple educational strategies about the causes and treatment of insomnia can reduce hypnotic prescribing rates and increase staff confidence in both the medical and psychological management of insomnia.

We systematically assessed the learning curve of Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate using the available literature to identify, as our primary outcome, the average number of cases required to reach competency. A computerized search of PubMed and Scopus for articles published from inception through to January 2018 was performed including 24 studies with a total of 5173 patients. Even though different outcome measures require varying case-loads to reach a plateau, Holmium laser enucleation of prostate has an acceptable learning curve with a proposed figure approximating 25-50 cases, with a structured mentorship programme aiding for faster progress.

A powdery mildew was found associated with the coastal wattle, Acacia sophorae, at Tullymorgan, in northern New South Wales, Australia. Morphological characterisation identified it as belonging to the genus Erysiphe, while internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing and phylogenetic analysis confirmed it as Erysiphe quercicola, a pathogen with a worldwide distribution and a broad host range. This is the first record of E. quericola infecting A. sophorae, and the first powdery mildew infection recorded for this native Australian plant.

Urea is the most common form of nitrogenous fertiliser. Recently, research has focused on the development of delivery systems to prolong fertiliser release and prevent fertiliser loss through leaching and volatilization. This study investigates and compares single- and double-layered hollow nanofibrous yarns as novel delivery systems to encapsulate and release urea. Single-layered hollow poly l-lactic acid (PLLA) nanofibre yarns loaded with urea fertiliser were fabricated using a customized electrospinning. Double-layered hollow nanofibre yarns were produced by electrospinning polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) nanofibres as an outer layer, with urea-impregnated PLLA nanofibres as the inner layer. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to characterize the morphology of hollow electrospun nanofibre yarns. A total nitrogen instrument (TNM-1) was used to study the urea release from single- and double-layered hollow nanofibres yarn in water. A Carbon:Nitrogen (CN) elemental analyser determined encapsulated nitrogen in PLLA nanofibres samples. Results indicated that urea-impregnated double-layered hollow nanofibre yarns significantly started nitrogen releasing at much lower amount during first 12 h compared to single-layered hollow nanofibre yarns (P value = 0.000). In conclusion, double-layered hollow nanofibre yarn has potential as an effective alternative to current methods for the slow release of fertilisers and other plant-required chemicals.

The vasculature of plants is typically colonized by a wide-range of bacteria with diverse functions. These bacteria can be sampled by pooling plant biopsies in water and then concentrating cells by centrifugation. When the extracted bacteria are added as a template for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sufficient DNA is generally liberated to facilitate the identification of specific taxa and characterization of bacterial community structure. The sampling technique facilitates surveys of multiple plants comprising a single crop, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of the crop microbiome than what can be achieved when examining single plants. This technique is rapid and cost-effective, and will help researchers monitor microbes associated with vascular tissues at various stages of crop development.

Agricultural intensification has delivered great gains in terms of food production but has come at great environmental cost. Consequently, there is growing societal demand for more sustainable farming systems, i.e., sustainable intensification. Within this, there is increasing recognition of the ecosystem services provided by soil organisms that contribute both to agricultural production and environmental sustainability. Conventional tillage-based farming systems experience frequent and significant soil disturbance, which negatively impacts many key soil organism groups, e.g., fungi and earthworms. Loss of these soil organisms results in loss of critical soil ecosystem services, including those related to soil nutrient cycling, crop nutrient uptake, and soil water management. Conversion of farming systems from conventional tillage to no-till can allow recovery of soil biology and restoration of soil ecosystem services. Thus, no-till farming systems can contribute positively towards sustainable intensification. However, important knowledge gaps and challenges remain. Greater knowledge of what soil organisms are present in soil and what services they provide is urgently needed. The ultimate goal is to understand how soil biology can be manipulated through management to provide desirable ecosystem services in space and time.

Chlorotic streak is a global disease of commercial sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrids). The disease is transmitted by wet soil, water, as well as in diseased planting material. Although first recognized almost 90 years ago and despite significant research effort, the identity of the causal agent has been elusive. Metagenomic high throughput sequencing (HTS) facilitated the discovery of novel protistan ribosomal and nuclear genes in chlorotic streak-infected sugarcane. These sequences suggest a possible causal agent belonging to the order Cercomonadida (Rhizaria, phylum Cercozoa). An organism with morphological features similar to cercomonads (=Cercomonadida) was isolated into pure axenic culture from internal stalk tissues of infected sugarcane. The isolated organism contained DNA sequences identical to those identified in infected plants by HTS. The DNA sequences and the morphology of the organism did not match any known species. Here we present a new genus and species, Phytocercomonas venanatans, which is associated with chlorotic streak of sugarcane. Amplicon sequencing also supports that P. venanatans is associated with this disease. This is the first reported member from Cercomonadida showing a probable pathogenic association with higher plants.

Renal replacement lipomatosis is a rare disease characterized by renal parenchymal atrophy and proliferation of inflammatory and fatty cells within the renal sinus, hilum, and perirenal region. The exact pathogenesis is unknown, however more than 75% of cases are associated with renal stones. Here, we provide images from a case with 10 years of follow-up, outlining the radiographic progression of the disease through time. Although only histopathology can confirm the diagnosis, high clinical suspicion in combination with the radiographic findings can differentiate the disease from other fat-containing entities.

Ratoon stunting disease (RSD), caused by the bacterium Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli, is arguably one of the most devastating diseases of sugarcane. Four diagnostic techniques were compared for 100 fields of sugarcane (Saccharum interspecific hybrids) of unknown infection status. These were quantitative polymerase chain reaction on pooled leaf sheath biopsies (LSB-qPCR), conventional PCR on the same templates (LSB-PCR), evaporative-binding enzyme immunoassay (EB-EIA) coupled with phase contrast microscopy (PCM) on expressed xylem sap from the same fields, and conventional PCR on the same xylem sap samples. LSB-qPCR and LSB-PCR detected the causal agent in 27 and 18 fields, respectively, whereas, from samples of expressed xylem sap from the same fields, conventional PCR identified 12 infections and EB-EIA/PCM detected L. xyli subsp. xyli in 3 fields. The sensitivities of qPCR and PCR were approximately 103 and 104 CFU ml−1, respectively, determined from plate counts of a dilution series. Tests were conducted on a further 139 LSB samples from across the Australian industry, with qPCR and PCR diagnosing RSD in 31 and 25 fields, respectively. Using qPCR and PCR on LSB samples, RSD was diagnosed in a range of cultivars throughout the year, and qPCR and PCR could detect L. xyli subsp. xyli in sugarcane ranging from 3 months to greater than 1 year old.

Innovation can be defined as invention + adoption + diffusion. In healthcare, it may be a novel idea, product, service or care pathway that has clear benefits when compared to what is currently done. Successful innovations often possess two key qualities: they are both usable and desirable. How can proven innovations be quickly and effectively adopted as best practice and taken up across the whole healthcare system? How can the commercial success of our ideas be realised at home rather than abroad, as has too often been the case? This review explores important issues of funding, information governance, interoperability, medical device regulation, procurement, clinical prototyping and the systemic challenge of encouraging and scaling innovation.

The Australian sugar industry has never pursued genetic resistance to ratoon stunting disease (RSD), despite it being widely considered to be one of the most important diseases of sugarcane (Saccharum interspecific hybrids). This is because of a prevailing view that the disease is economically managed, and that no further action needs to take place. However, there is a range of epidemiological evidence that suggests that RSD is having a more significant impact than what is generally recognized. This review traces the factors that have led to an industry stance that is apparently without any scientific justification, and which has tended to downplay the significance of RSD on Australian sugarcane productivity, and thus has led to significant lost production. The consequences of this position are that RSD may be influencing broad but poorly explained issues such as commercial ratooning performance of existing varieties and the “yield decline” that has been subject to much scrutiny, if not much success in resolving the issue. Based on the available information, this review calls on the Australian sugar industry to prioritize selection for RSD resistance in the plant improvement program.

Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) is a wide-field, optical technique capable of assessing changes in flow rates of scattering fluids. In biomedical applications, LSCI has been used to quantify changes of blood perfusion in various tissue. One limitation of LSCI is its limited depth sensitivity- it can only sense blood flow in superficial layers of tissue. The goal of this study was to experimentally investigate the depth-sensitivity of LSCI for detecting fluid flow embedded in a turbid optical phantom. LSCI was used to image a flow channel buried by the scattering medium at incremental depths ranging from 0 mm to 2.4 mm. The flow measurements were successively repeated using two illumination wavelengths, 633 nm and 785 nm. Images were captured with and without flow present through the phantom for each wavelength and analyzed to develop a flow-sensitivity parameter. This provided a metric of LSCI’s ability for detecting flow as a function of channel depth. At a depth of 1.5 mm, the flow sensitivity decreased by 80% with the 633 nm illumination and 65% for the 785 nm illumination relative to a depth of 0 mm. The results demonstrate that the flow sensitivity of the 785 nm source diminished at a slower rate as the buried depth was increased than the sensitivity of the 633 nm source. This study suggests that the flow depth and illumination wavelength should be considered while using LSCI.

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate deterministic electrically driven, strain-mediated domain wall (DW) rotation in ferromagnetic Ni rings fabricated on piezoelectric [Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3]0.66-[PbTiO3]0.34 (PMN-PT) substrates. While simultaneously imaging the Ni rings with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy, an electric field is applied across the PMN-PT substrate that induces strain in the ring structures, driving DW rotation around the ring toward the dominant PMN-PT strain axis by the inverse magnetostriction effect. The DW rotation we observe is analytically predicted using a fully coupled micromagnetic/elastodynamic multiphysics simulation, which verifies that the experimental behavior is caused by the electrically generated strain in this multiferroic system. Finally, this DW rotation is used to capture and manipulate micrometer-scale magnetic beads in a fluidic environment to demonstrate a proof-of-concept energy-efficient pathway for multiferroic-based lab-on-a-chip applications.

We have used soft x-ray photoemission electron microscopy to image the magnetization of single domain La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ nano-islands arranged in geometrically frustrated configurations such as square ice and kagome ice geometries. Upon thermal randomization, ensembles of nano-islands with strong inter-island magnetic coupling relax towards low-energy configurations. Statistical analysis shows that the likelihood of ensembles falling into low-energy configurations depends strongly on the annealing temperature. Annealing to just below the Curie temperature of the ferromagnetic film (T$_{C}$ = 338 K) allows for a much greater probability of achieving low energy configurations as compared to annealing above the Curie temperature. At this thermally active temperature of 325 K, the ensemble of ferromagnetic nano-islands explore their energy landscape over time and eventually transition to lower energy states as compared to the frozen-in configurations obtained upon cooling from above the Curie temperature. Thus, this materials system allows for a facile method to systematically study thermal evolution of artificial spin ice arrays of nano-islands at temperatures modestly above room temperature., Comment: 4 figures and 9 supplemental figures

This chapter examines how theories of identity construction can usefully inform choral praxis. It starts with an outline of key concepts in theories of identity and how they can help us understand the processes by which choirs inculcate their members into their particular choral culture. It then examines three areas particularly salient for the choral leader. The first is the phenomenon of “non-singers”: how they emerge as a by-product of western cultural discourses, and what can be done to rehabilitate them. The second is the interpenetration of social and musical identity categories: how elements we may think of as “purely” musical are constructed in terms of wider social categories, including the habitus of the cultural environment, and the implications for how we frame the choral techniques we use. The third is the relationship between individual and group: how an ensemble establishes a corporate, supra-personal identity, and ways to facilitate this.

The preliminary examination team made up of NASA personnel and visiting scientists were responsible for examining the Apollo 11 lunar samples, preparing them for detailed study and allocating samples for examination by other scientists around the world. The PET employed stereo-microscopic examination of the samples in addition to a polarizing microscope, and X-ray powder defraction, as well as thin-section study of two of crystalline rocks. The following four basic groups were determined to make up the samples returned from the Apollo 11 mission. 1. Type A – fine-grained vesicular crystalline igneous rock 2. Type B – medium-grained vuggy crystalline igneous rock 3. Type C – breccia consisting of small fragments of gray rocks and fine material 4. Type D – fines

On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy addressed a joint session of Congress. Although Kennedy addressed a range of urgent national needs, one in particular electrified the nation and stunned the world. This one sentence is one often quoted from his short presidency: “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon, and returning him safely to the Earth.” Kennedy was not so much interested in scientific advancement but wanted to finally get ahead of its Cold War rival, the Soviet Union, in the race to the Moon. Volumes have been written on the geopolitical basis of Project Apollo, but in May of 1961, the scientific benefits of Apollo were not the goal. In Kennedy’s mind, America was determined to prove that it was superior to Russia.

The site for the first manned lunar landing mission had been made from a combination of both geological and orbital mechanics factors. All the Apollo landing sites would be along the lunar equator. Possible locations for these landing sites had been photographed by orbiting probes and the mapping cameras on Apollo 8 and Apollo 10. The selection of sites was narrowed down to five possible locations. The first of the five selected was in the dark-colored Mare Tranquillitatis. The specific landing site selected for Apollo 11 was approximately 25 km southeast of the Surveyor 5 landing site.

The Soviet Union dominated the scientific and human spaceflight events of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The United States always seemed to be trying to catch up and surpass the Soviets in their space accomplishments. Eventually, the United States did indeed get behind an agenda to beat Russia in this newest phase of the Cold War. In the early years, however, the Soviet Union basked in its great scientific and human spaceflight achievements.

Among the most influential scientists involved in lunar science and the establishment of astronaut training for their missions on the lunar surface was Eugene Shoemaker. He also established a support team of many qualified geologists and geophysicists to assist in the training of the Apollo astronauts. The Apollo program drew to it, as if by some grand design, the finest engineering, scientific and management minds in the United States during the 1960s. Every one of them was vital to the success of the Apollo program. Eugene Shoemaker ensured the astronauts exploring the lunar surface could identify and rapidly collect the lunar samples that would tell the history of the Moon and, by extension, expand our knowledge of the Earth.
