Background and chronic pollution by organic pollutants (OPs) is a widespread threat in the oceans with still uncharacterized effects on marine ecosystems and the modulation of major biogeochemical cycles. The ecological impact and toxicity of this anthropogenic dissolved organic carbon (ADOC) is not related to the presence of a single compound but to the co-occurrence of a myriad of synthetic chemicals with largely unknown effects on heterotrophic microbial communities. We have analyzed the metabolic capacity of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) of natural oceanic communities from the north Pacific (Costa Rica dome) and Atlantic oceans challenged with environmentally relevant levels of ADOC. In the Atlantic, ADOC-exposed MAGs responded transcriptionally more strongly compared to controls than in the Pacific, possibly mirroring the higher relevance of ADOC compounds as carbon source in oligotrophic environments. The largest proportions of transcripts originated from MAGs belonging in the families Rhodobacteraceae and Flavobacteriaceae, known to play a role on consumption of several OPs. In the Atlantic, archaeal Poseidoniales showed the highest transcription levels after 2 h of ADOC exposure, although no increase of relative abundances in the DNA pool was recorded after 24 h, whereas Methylophaga showed the opposite pattern. Both taxa are suggested to be actively involved in the consumption of biogenic alkanes produced by cyanobacteria. We observed similar gene expression profiles of alkane degradation and methylotrophy signature genes. These findings, plus the chemical degradation of alkanes measured in the experiments, provides experimental evidence of the consumption of anthropogenic hydrocarbons and synthetic chemicals at the low concentrations found in the ocean, and modulation of microbiomes by ADOC.

It has been regarded that road-deposited sediment (RDS) is one of the important sinks of anthropogenic pollutants as well as the major source of pollutants in stormwater runoff. However, the role of RDS, as a mediator of pollutants to the stormwater runoff, has not yet been investigated so far. Therefore, in this study, the leaching of dissolved pollutants, especially dissolved organic matter (DOM) from RDS, in synthetic precipitation was investigated. A significant amount of metals, nutrients, dissolved compounds, and DOM was leached. The leaching of DOM during 10 sequential leachings was 1811.3 and 2301.7 mg C/kg for larger (63 μm–2 mm) and smaller (< 63 μm) RDS, respectively. The results of UV/Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and size exclusion chromatography showed that the leached DOM was of anthropogenic/abiotic origins with lower molecular weight and humification degree. It is ubiquitous in stormwater runoff and industrial discharges and differs from natural organic matter. The results strongly suggest that RDS is an important mediator transferring anthropogenic pollutants to stormwater runoff. The use of wastewater for agricultural irrigation is a common practice worldwide; long-term use of wastewater can have adverse effects, such as the migration of the anthropogenic dissolved organic matter into the aquifer. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM) was used to investigate the characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in groundwater and irrigation wastewater, to establish the effect of intensive irrigation on the water quality from the aquifer that underlies the area. The fluorescence spectra showed the presence of humic and fulvic acids and anthropogenic organic compounds similar to aromatic proteins and soluble microbial products in wastewater resources. The significant fraction of DOM in groundwater samples are aromatic proteins and soluble microbial products, identical to wastewater. Chlorides and nitrate ion concentrations suggest a local flow system. High levels of TDS are associated with intensive irrigation with residual water and the return irrigation associated with a gradual increase in salts of CO32−, NO3−, HCO3−, Cl−, and SO42−. The anthropogenic DOM is a useful indicator of water quality management in groundwater based on origin tracking of DOM and changes in organic pollutants. How microbes respond to substantial and increasing anthropogenic disturbance remains an open question in river systems. We tested the hypothesis that the source and distribution of anthropogenic organic matter (OM) were significant factors affecting the spatial variation of the microbial community composition of the Yangtze River sediments. Bulk geochemical proxies and lignin phenols suggested a general decrease of terrestrial C3 plants or soil OM input from the middle to the lower reaches. Fecal sterols inferred higher sewage contamination levels in the middle reaches. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) distribution indicated a dominant biomass and coal combustion signal in the middle reaches, whereas a mixed source including petroleum combustion in the lower reaches. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a large portion of Methanobacteria and Verrucomicrobia enriched in the middle reaches, whereas OM-degrading bacteria, including Flavobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Alphaproteobacteria were dominant in the lower reaches. Quantitative PCR analyses and multivariate analysis further demonstrated that sources and distribution of OM had combined effects in shaping alpha and beta-diversity of sediment microbial communities. Sewage discharge and incomplete OM combustion, respectively, were associated with Methylococcaceae, Chloroflexi, and Bacteroidetes groups. This review discusses disinfection by-products' (DBPs) potential precursors, formation, and toxicity, alongside available research on the treatment of DBPs in Southeast Asian countries' water sources. Although natural organic matter (NOM) in the form of humic and fulvic acids is the major precursor of DBPs formation, the presence of anthropogenic organic matter (AOM) also plays essential roles during disinfection using chlorine. NOM has been observed in water sources in Southeast Asian countries, with a relatively high concentration in peat-influenced water sources and a relatively low concentration in non-peat-influenced water sources. Similarly, AOMs, such as microplastics, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), have also been detected in water sources in Southeast Asian countries. Although studies regarding DBPs in Southeast Asian countries are available, they focus on regulated DBPs. Here, the formation potential of unregulated DBPs is also discussed. In addition, the toxicity associated with extreme DBPs' formation potential, as well as the effectiveness of treatments such as conventional coagulation, filtration, adsorption, and ozonation in reducing DBPs' formation potential in Southeast Asian sources of water, is also analyzed. Nitrogen and carbon stable isotope analysis of particulate organic matter (POM) was used to assess the impact of anthropogenically derived organic matter in coastal parts of the Istra Peninsula (Northern Adriatic). The investigation was conducted in areas potentially impacted and enriched with different amounts of organic matter. Elevated δN values in POM reflect enrichment of organic matter near the coast due to inadequate municipal infrastructure in cities and local septic systems as well as inputs from riverine terrestrial material. On the contrary, negative δN values reflect the depleting effect of purification plants. Significant differences in nitrogen stable isotope ratios were observed between western and southeastern coasts. The δC values show small depletion at sites with potentially greater anthropogenic impact. A weak temporal increase of δN from spring to late summer was observed. The results for nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios of POM and their comparisons with other areas suggest diverse amounts and sources of organic matter as well as differences in movement of floating POM within the water column. The δN and δC values reflect the ratios of marine and terrigenous organic matter, the latter being mainly anthropogenically influenced. The results finally suggest precaution in applicability of POM as tracers for detecting anthropogenic organic matter in marine coastal ecosystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
