Purpose: This study analyzed the sequences of actions in professional men and women padel players to identify common game patterns. Methods: The sample comprised 17,557 stroke-by-stroke actions (N = 1640 rallies) of the championship World Padel Tour. Multistep Markov chains were used to calculate the conditional probabilities of occurrence of actions during the rally. Results: Results revealed that men's and women's padel is mainly defined by 36 patterns constituting 55% and 63% of all actions in the game, respectively, with the 10 most common sequences accounting for 42% to 45% of the game. There were recurrent technical–tactical actions with specific offensive and defensive functions that were constantly reiterated during the rallies. In men, the use of smash, volley, bandeja, direct, back wall, back-wall lobs, and direct lobs followed a foreseeable pattern up to 8 lags, whereas women described predictable interactions for volley, bandeja, direct, lobs, and direct lobs up to 5 lags and for smash and back wall up to 4 lags. Conclusions: The ability of padel players to recall these patterns and enhance their anticipation skills may potentially improve their performance. These findings contribute to a better knowledge of professional padel game dynamics while providing coaches and players with useful information to optimize training and decision-making strategies. AbstractPain anticipation during conditions of uncertainty can unveil intrinsic biases, and understanding these biases can guide pain treatment interventions. This study used machine learning and functional magnetic resonance imaging to predict anticipatory responses in a pain anticipation experiment. One hundred forty-seven participants that included healthy controls (n = 57) and individuals with current and/or past mental health diagnosis (n = 90) received cues indicating upcoming pain stimuli: 2 cues predicted high and low temperatures, while a third cue introduced uncertainty. Accurate differentiation of neural patterns associated with specific anticipatory conditions was observed, involving activation in the anterior short gyrus of the insula and the nucleus accumbens. Three distinct response profiles emerged: subjects with a negative bias towards high pain anticipation, those with a positive bias towards low pain anticipation, and individuals whose predictions during uncertainty were unbiased. These profiles remained stable over one year, were consistent across diagnosed psychopathologies, and correlated with cognitive coping styles and underlying insula anatomy. The findings suggest that individualized and stable pain anticipation occurs in uncertain conditions.

A series of controlled studies found that consumers counter-normatively prefer something nearly complete over something complete. We call this phenomenon the "one-away effect" because we find that when consumers are, for example, one stamp away from completing a punch card loyalty program, they value the card more than a completed card. This is because their valuation of the one-away card is influenced by their anticipation of merely completing the card, which generates its own utility, apart from the card's end-reward (a free coffee). To wit, the prospective utility of performing the final action that fulfills completion increases consumers' valuation of the one-away card. Our findings suggest that consumers are motivated to complete goals, tasks, and sets not only to obtain their end-rewards, but also because merely completing things is intrinsically motivating and can be a goal in and of itself. This article draws on an (auto)ethnographic study of a group of freelance fashion professionals, known as 'fashion agents', with a particular focus on their relationship to time. It aims to elucidate the temporalities that permeate their work lives and shape their subjectivities, which I coin as anticipatory subjectivities. Such subjectivities, I posit, are emblematic of the conditions of flexibilisation, precarity and hopeful investment in the future characteristic of contemporary cultural industries and, more broadly, late capitalist knowledge economies. I propose that agents' life-worlds are permeated by a promissory regime – i.e., living in anticipation of constantly deferred, adjourned and unsecured rewards. Such a regime produces subjectivities that are premised on a hopeful emotional investment in the future, coupled with a preparedness for, and a capacity to navigate, incalculable risks. Another feature of the 'timescapes' that agents have to negotiate is the simultaneity of multiple fluid, unstructured and often conflicting temporalities and tempos, which requires a particular kind of time-competence. Finally, the article also foregrounds the importance, in agents' temporal orientations, of kairos : the right, opportune moment. Such a moment is normally perceived as being just about to happen; yet, it cannot be orchestrated or precipitated. As a result, one of agents' key temporal experiences is that of waiting, which de-subjectivises them and inhibits their capacity to act. Together, these time-orientations – anticipation, managing multiple temporalities and a hopeful waiting for kairos – underpin and foster subjectivities and forms of affective labour that sustain the cultural industries; they are also emblematic of the temporal conditions of late capitalism. The Concealed Information Test (CIT) aims to extract concealed crime‐related knowledge using physiological measures. In the present study, we propose a new variant of the CIT that contains a continuously moving stimulus. A total of 81 participants were either informed or not about the specific location of an upcoming terrorist attack. The CIT consisted of a map with a superimposed moving dot, combined with measurements of respiration and electrodermal activity. The results revealed both respiratory suppression and an increase in skin conductance when the moving dot passed the target location only in informed participants. These findings showed that this new variant of the CIT can differentiate between groups of informed and uninformed individuals and an exploratory analysis revealed it can help narrow down a search area. This article approaches the mystery of preference formation – a blind spot in the capability approach – from the angle of aspiring. I argue that aspiring – actively engaging with desirable representations of potential futures – can be helpful to analyse the social processes involved in preference formation under two conditions. Firstly, we need to clarify the conceptual confusion around aspiring that can be found in the capability literature and beyond. Secondly, we need to consider the social and temporal embeddedness of aspiring, which can be done by examining the relationships between aspiring and people's lived experiences. Building on a critical discussion of the contribution of sociologists Alfred Schutz and Pierre Bourdieu to the study of projecting, I propose a framework to (a) analyse why aspiring may happen to lead to conceiving conservative aspirations despite adversity – thereby aligning with adaptive preferences in the sense of Sen, A. 2002. What will the future be? We wonder! In this survey, we explore the gap between current research in egocentric vision and the ever-anticipated future, where wearable computing, with outward facing cameras and digital overlays, is expected to be integrated in our every day lives. To understand this gap, the article starts by envisaging the future through character-based stories, showcasing through examples the limitations of current technology. We then provide a mapping between this future and previously defined research tasks. For each task, we survey its seminal works, current state-of-the-art methodologies and available datasets, then reflect on shortcomings that limit its applicability to future research. Note that this survey focuses on software models for egocentric vision, independent of any specific hardware. The paper concludes with recommendations for areas of immediate explorations so as to unlock our path to the future always-on, personalised and life-enhancing egocentric vision. Poor postural control during jump landing may increase ankle sprain incidences among people with chronic ankle instability (CAI). The effects of anticipation on it and its relationship with proprioception need further examination. Fifteen participants with CAI and 15 healthy controls were recruited to perform single-leg jump landings when knowing the landing side before (planned) or after (unplanned) take-off respectively, along with a step-down proprioception test differentiating four inclination platforms (inverted 12°, 14°, 16° and 18°). Ground reaction force data (peak force, loading rate and time of stabilisation) during landings and proprioception scores were collected and analysed. The CAI group exhibited a higher loading rate (59.6 ± 7.6 vs 49.4 ± 6.7 N/kg*seconds, p = 0.011) and longer medial-lateral time to stabilisation (4.82 ± 0.69 vs 4.11 ± 0.47 seconds, p = 0.023) compared to the control group during an unplanned landing. Furthermore, the above variables were negatively correlated with the step-down proprioception score only in the unplanned condition but not in the planned condition. CAI participants had inferior medial-lateral time-to-stabilisation and loading attenuation during unplanned jump landing than healthy controls, which were associated with decreased proprioception, highlighting the importance of addressing proprioception to improve balance control during unpredictable landing situations. Introduction: Chronic low back pain (cLBP) poses significant challenges, often addressed through avoidance or distraction. Emerging evidence suggests that mind-body interventions, like our novel Mind Your Pain (MyP) smartphone mobile application, may offer relief. We conducted a single-arm, mixedmethods neuroimaging study to assess the degree to which treatment response to our 8-week intervention, as measured by the reduction in the Pain, Enjoyment of Life and General Activity Scale (PEG), was associated with enhanced pain-related insula activation over time. Methods: Twenty-nine individuals with cLBP completed patient-reported assessments, qualitative sensory testing (QST) measures, and neuroimaging pre- and post-MyP. Functional MRI data during experimental heat pain on the left forearm were collected and analyzed, comparing responders (=50% reduction in PEG scores) and non-responders. Results: MyP led to significant decreases in PEG scores overall. Furthermore, MyP responders exhibited increased pain-related activation in key brain regions, including the contralateral posterior insula, bilateral ventral anterior insula, ventral anterior cingulate, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and nucleus accumbens. Although baseline behavioral and sensory measures did not differ between the two responder groups, baseline neural differences related to the impact of the endogenous back pain were observed. Discussion: MyP appears to modify pain response and underlying neural circuitry, suggesting neural changes in interoception may serve as biomarkers for mind-body interventions in cLBP. This article uses historical and ethnographic methods to examine the primarily East-Central European Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM). I ask how and why the IOM has survived as an institution since its inception in 1987, working especially with the personal archive of Vratislav Kubišta. Kubišta was a metallurgist and former Deputy Director General at IOM who after retirement sought to develop a local deep-sea mining museum. This is a story about the work that archives do, but even more about how institutions maintain archives. I draw on recent work in the history and anthropology of time and archival practice to situate IOM's history and Kubišta's collection in narratives of ruin, the unbuilt, and the experience of multiple temporalities within spaces of resource speculation and anticipation. I suggest that IOM's history highlights the contingencies of resources in the temporality of indefinite pause, their attendant data, and scientific labor and life under the shifting political, economic, and scientific circumstances of the ongoing not-yet. In broadening the history of what is once more a hotly contested potential resource, this account speaks to the claims of contemporary would-be seabed miners, who frequently frame the practice in terms of innovation, urgency, and novelty. The following paper adopts the term Future Orienteering to indicate the attitude of openness and preparedness to the future of individuals, communities and organisations. If Futures Studies wants to become an independent field of research, future skills need to be developed with appropriate training paths, and future attitudes and strategies need to be evaluated accurately. Thus, considering the necessity of a measurement system for the evaluation of strategic foresight and future-based activities, this article illustrates a new theoretical model, where special emphasis is placed on the distinction between Forecasting, Foresight and Anticipation, according to the Theory of Anticipation presented in (Poli, Introducing anticipation. In: Poli R (ed) Handbook of anticipation, 2019a); (Poli, Lavorare con Il futuro: idee e strumenti per governarel'incertezza, 2019b); (Poli, Introduction to anticipation studies, 2017). The result is a battery of three synthetic indexes, immediately readable to allow easy comparisons. Purpose: the aim of the research results presented in the article is to strengthen a better understanding of the processes related to the transformation of hard coal mining in Poland, in particular the preparation of employees and their representatives, as well as employers from transformed areas for the upcoming changes. In this perspective, anticipating future skills against the internal potential of entrepreneurs becomes more and more important. It is a key element that enables entrepreneurs to adapt to changes, create innovative solutions and remain competitive on the market. Methodology: in the space of challenges and changes outlined in the article, qualitative research was carried out focused on predicting future skills from the perspective of entrepreneurs' internal capital. The research was conducted using the focus group interview (FGI) and in-depth individual interview (IDI) methods. Resultat: research results on predicting future skills in the perspective of the internal potential of entrepreneurs in transformed areas, indicate that these are areas characterized by major changes in the economy, technology and environment, which requires entrepreneurs to be able to quickly adapt to new conditions and the ability to adapt their activities to market requirements. Originality: predicting the future skills and potential of entrepreneurs in transformed areas is difficult due to the dynamic changes taking place in these areas and the complexity of factors influencing their development. Introduction: Athletes' capability to perform activities with body rotation could be weakened by fatigue accumulation. Making pivot turning in unanticipated scenarios after fatigue may greatly challenge athletes' ability to adapt rational motion strategies, elevating the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. This study aimed to investigate the effects of fatigue and anticipation on biomechanical risk factors of ACL injury during 180° pivot turns in female soccer players. Methods: Twenty-one female soccer players were selected as participants. The participants performed anticipated turning maneuver before the fatigue intervention. The participants sprinted along the runway, decelerated and planted their foot on the force plate, and then executed a 180° pivot turn. For unanticipated tests, the pivot turn was mixed with side/cross-cuts, which were indicated to the participant using a custom-designed light system. The tests were repeated by the participant after receiving a fatigue intervention. Lower-limb joint angles and moments were characterized. Peak ground reaction forces (GRFs) and GRF loading rates were determined. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was applied to examine the effects of fatigue and anticipation on the variables of interest. Results: Compared to the anticipated conditions, the approach speed was significantly lower in the unanticipated tests (P < 0.0001). Lower-limb kinematics showed varied angular patterns across conditions: greater hip joint variations in flexion, abduction, and internal rotation during unanticipated turns; consistent knee joint flexion and ankle plantarflexion with dorsiflexion observed mid-turn. Significant interactions (P = 0.023 to P = 0.035) between fatigue and anticipation influenced hip joint angles. Anticipation effects were notable at initial contact and peak ground reaction force, increasing hip, knee, and ankle joint angles (P < 0.0001 to P = 0.012). Participants showed consistent ground reaction force (GRF) patterns during pivot turns across fatigue and anticipation conditions, with the first peak occurring approximately 10% into the turn period. Significant interaction effects (P = 0.016) between fatigue and anticipation were observed for knee flex/extension moments at the first peak vertical GRF. Anticipation significantly increased first peak vertical (P < 0.0001), anteroposterior (P < 0.0001), and mediolateral (P < 0.0001) GRFs. Fatigue increased first peak vertical (P = 0.022), anteroposterior (P = 0.018), and mediolateral (P = 0.019) GRFs. Post-fatigue, participants exhibited reduced first peak GRFs and loading rates compared to pre-fatigue conditions, with higher rates observed in unanticipated turns (vertical GRF: P = 0.030; anteroposterior GRF: P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Female soccer players' lower-limb Biomechanical characterization could be greatly affected by the change of anticipatory scenarios. With the associated increase of GRF, the risk of their ACL injury might be elevated. Fatigue affected female soccer players' abilities on movement performances, but the interaction of these two factors could potentially weaken their knee's functions during pivot turns. Neuroprotection aims to safeguard neurons from damage caused by various factors like stress, potentially leading to the rescue, recovery, or regeneration of the nervous system and its functions [J Clin Neurosci. 2002;9(1):4–8]. Conversely, neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to adapt and change throughout life, involving structural and functional alterations in cells and synaptic transmission [Neural Plast. 2014;2014:541870]. Neuroprotection is a broad and multidisciplinary field encompassing various approaches and strategies aimed at preserving and promoting neuronal health. It is a critical area of research in neuroscience and neurology, with the potential to lead to new therapies for a wide range of neurological disorders and conditions. Neuroprotection can take various forms and may involve pharmacological agents, lifestyle modifications, or behavioral interventions. Accordingly, also the perspective and the meaning of neuroprotection differs due to different angles of interpretation. The primary interpretation is from the pharmacological point of view since the most consistent data come from this field. In addition, we will discuss also alternative, yet less considered, perspectives on neuroprotection, focusing on specific neuroprotective targets, interactions with surrounding microglia, different levels of neuroprotective effects, the reversive/adaptative dimension, and its use as anticipatory/prophylactic intervention. This paper explores the concept of anticipation in the context of governing societal transformations toward sustainability in the Anthropocene. It distinguishes two interrelated processes of anticipation for the governance of just sustainable transformations: using futures and making futures, arguing that these processes of anticipation can help reframe notions of justice and responsibility. With this reframing, it is proposed that justice and responsibility should be shared and distributed among different actors, based on certain principles that take into account the complexity, uncertainty, and ambiguity of the future in the context of the Anthropocene. Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystem disorder with progressive myopathy and myotonia. The clinical study was conducted in the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania (RNOA), and in it 39 individuals from 17 unrelated families were identified with DM1. Clinical presentations varied, including muscle weakness, fatigue, intellectual disability, hypersomnia, ophthalmological abnormalities, and alopecia. Using clinical and genotyping data, we confirmed the diagnosis and enabled the study of CTG-repeat anticipation and DM1 prevalence in the Ossetian and Ingush populations. CTG expansion correlated with age of onset, with clinical severity, and with offspring showing more severe symptoms than parents. In many families, the youngest child had a more severe DM1 phenotype than older siblings. The prevalence was 14.17 per 100,000 in Ossetians and 18.74 per 100,000 in Ingush people, aligning with global data. Segregation analysis showed a higher frequency of maternal transmission. The study highlights the clinical and genetic heterogeneity of DM1 and its dependence on repeat expansion and paternal and maternal age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Recently, an exonic GGC repeat expansion (RE) was identified by long-read genome sequencing in the ZFHX3 gen, causing spinocerebellar ataxia type 4 (SCA4), a dominant form of ataxia with sensory neuropathy. However, the analysis of larger cohorts of patients remained demanding, resulting in a challenge to diagnose patients and leaving the question of anticipation in SCA4 unanswered. Objectives: We aimed to develop a GGC repeat test for clinical SCA4 screening and to apply this test to screen two large German SCA pedigrees and samples of unrelated patients collected over the last 25 years. Methods: We modulated a commercial GGC-RE kit (Bio-Techne AmplideX® Asuragen® PCR/CE FMR1 Reagents) with ZFHX3-specific primers and adapted PCR conditions. The test was applied to patients and 50 healthy controls to determine the exact repeat number. Clinical data were revised and correlated with the expanded allele sizes and an exploratory analysis of structural MRI was performed. Results: Repeat size, determined by our protocol for (GGC)n RE analysis shows a strong inverse correlation between repeat length and age at onset and anticipation in subsequent generations. The phenotype also appears to be more strongly expressed in carriers of longer RE. Clinical red flags were slowed saccades, sensory neuropathy and autonomic dysfunction. Conclusion: Our protocol enables cost-effective and robust screening for the causative SCA4 RE within ZFHX3. Furthermore, detailed clinical data of our patients gives a more precise view on SCA4, which seems to be more common among patients with ataxia than expected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of familial MS (fMS) in Belgrade MS population, discern the differences between the persons with fMS and sporadic MS, and to detect the presence of anticipation phenomenon in fMS patients. Methods: The data on the demographic and clinical characteristics of MS patients was obtained from the Belgrade MS population Registry. In cases of vertical transmission of MS, the family members were divided into the younger and older generation, in order to assess the potential presence of anticipation phenomenon. To adjust for follow-up time bias, a secondary analysis including only patients who had the onset of symptoms before 39 years (75.percentile), and those who were 39 + years, was performed. Results: The prevalence of fMS in Belgrade MS population is 6.4%. FMS cases had earlier age at MS symptom onset (30.4 vs. 32.3 years) compared to sporadic MS cohort. When comparing fMS cases across generations, the younger generation had significantly lower age at onset compared with the older one (25.8 vs. 35.7 years, p < 0.001). After adjustment for the different length of the follow-up, the difference in age at symptom onset between the groups was reduced, but it still existed and was statistically significant (30.0 years in younger vs. 36.4 years in older generation, p = 0.040). Conclusion: In our study, the analysis of fMS cases across generations, showed an earlier age of symptom onset in the younger generation, even after adjustment. In the Serial Reaction Time Task, participants respond to several stimuli usually being unaware that the stimuli follow a predefined sequence while still learning the sequence. In the present study, we aimed to clearly separate explicit intentional learning from implicit incidental learning by either informing participants about all details of the sequence or not informing participants about the existence of the sequence. Further, we explored the influence of anticipatory cues during practice while anticipatory cues were either presented (extrinsically triggered anticipation) or not presented (self-reliant intrinsic anticipation). Participants were tested before and after practice in the Practice Sequence and a Control Sequence. To test automatization, tests were performed in Single-Task and Dual-Task Blocks. Results showed that after learning with explicit instructions, participants memorized the sequence more deeply and executed the sequence faster than after learning without explicit instructions. Further, by learning with anticipatory cues, participants memorized the sequence less deeply and executed the sequence slower than by learning without anticipatory cues. Unexpectedly, automatization was sequence-unspecific and independent of the practice conditions. In conclusion, detailed explicit prior information about the sequence facilitates sequence learning while anticipatory online cues during practice hamper sequence learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies have shown that anticipation induces more emotions than retrospection, known as temporal emotion asymmetry. However, the majority of previous studies have been confined to Western contexts. Eastern populations tend to emphasize the past more than their Western counterparts and may exhibit distinct forms of temporal emotion asymmetry. Therefore, we conducted an investigation involving Chinese adolescents. Our research encompassed two experiments, investigating Chinese adolescents' temporal emotion asymmetry from a self-perspective (Experiment 1; N = 124) and an other-perspective (Experiment 2; N = 162). Participants were prompted to retrospect and anticipate events that elicited pleasant or unpleasant feelings. The results revealed that, whether from a self-perspective or an other-perspective, retrospection of past positive events elicited greater pleasure than the anticipation of future positive events. However, concerning adverse events, under a self-perspective, anticipation induced more displeasure than retrospection (Experiment 1); under an other-perspective, retrospection induced more displeasure than anticipation (Experiment 2). Our findings provide some support for the construal level theory, fading affect bias, and mobilization-minimization hypothesis of event cognition. In his “Critique of Violence,” Walter Benjamin seeks to rethink justice as the interruption of the juridical temporality, which is characterized by the relationship between means and ends. Benjamin imagines a form of violence that finds in itself its own criterion of rightness: divine violence emerges as a third kind of violence beyond both the state’s monopoly of violence and the binary opposition between violence and non-violence. I will read Benjamin in the historical-political context of the crisis of the state, democracy and parliamentarism in order to develop the idea of divine violence as a practice that interrupts the means-end relation and defends new forms of togetherness that are anticipated in the moment of a struggle.

Whilst there is nascent literature surrounding researcher vulnerability, little is known about how memories and anticipations can elicit researcher vulnerabilities, and vulnerable academic writing can still be met with some scepticism. In this paper, I therefore provide an autoethnographic narrative of my encounters with researcher vulnerability during research into tattoos, time, and death. My tale revolves around three themes: Remembering vulnerabilities, (Un)anticipating vulnerabilities, and Fluctuating vulnerabilities. In doing so, I reveal not only how vulnerabilities can fluctuate through time and space, but also how past memories and future anticipations can stir present-day researcher vulnerabilities. Ultimately, I move beyond the 'vulnerability as failure' framing by helping to encourage an academic culture that celebrates being open about researcher vulnerability and writing more vulnerably. BackgroundMotivational impairment associated with deficits in processing the anticipation of future reward is hypothesized to be a cardinal feature of schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SZ). Evidence from short-term follow-up (6-week post-treatment) studies suggests that these deficits may improve or be reversed with treatment, although longer-term outcomes are unknown. Here we examined the one-year trajectory of functional activation in brain circuitry associated with reward anticipation in people with recent onset SZ who participated in coordinated specialty care (CSC) treatment, hypothesizing normalization of brain response mirroring previous short-term findings in first-episode individuals.MethodBlood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, anterior insula, and ventral striatum (VS) associated with reward anticipation during the Incentivized Control Engagement Task (ICE-T) was analyzed in a baseline sample of 49 healthy controls (HCs) and 52 demographically matched people with SZ, with follow-up data available for 35 HCs and 17 people with SZ.ResultsIn agreement with our hypothesis, significant time × diagnosis interactions were observed across all regions, in which reward anticipation-associated BOLD response increased in SZ to above baseline HC levels at follow-up. Increased VS activation was associated with decreased reality distortion symptoms over the follow-up period. Baseline reward anticipation-associated BOLD response in the right anterior insula was associated with improvement in reality distortion symptoms.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that functional deficits in reward anticipation may be reversed after one year of CSC in recent onset participants with SZ, and that this improvement is associated with reduced positive symptoms in the illness.

This article proposes the concept of anticipated affordances as an analytical supplement to affordance theory. 'Anticipated affordances' refers to how actors anticipate or speculate on a technology's affordances before they have any direct use experience with it. To demonstrate the consequences of such speculation on the social life of new technologies, the article analyses why teachers in Norwegian schools have expressed scepticism towards AV1: a telepresence robot meant to reconnect 'homebound' children with their school. Drawing on qualitative interviews, the article finds that teachers anticipated three undesirable affordances from having AV1 in their classrooms: peeping, broadcasting, and parental auditing. The article also discusses how these anticipations intersected with issues of domestication, gatekeeping and experiences of AV1's actual affordances. In sum, the article advances anticipated affordances as a central topic of inquiry for new media studies, which can complement existing analytical foci and shed new light on the (non)adoption of technology. Purpose: Caffeine is a potent central nervous system stimulant that increases the activity of the prefrontal cortex and can improve various cognitive skills. An improvement in these cognitive skills can lead to further benefits in athletic performance. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify the dose-response of caffeine on cognitive performance. This study aimed to determine the effects of different doses of caffeine on sport-related cognitive aspects. Methods: Twenty-nine healthy physically active young adults were recruited. All participants completed three trials under the following conditions: (a) placebo, (b) 3 mg/kg, or (c) 6 mg/kg body mass of caffeine. In each trial, different cognitive abilities were evaluated with the following battery of tests: reaction time (Dynavision™ D2), anticipation (Bassin Anticipation Timer), sustained attention (Go/No-Go and Eriksen Flanker Test) and memory tests. Moreover, the side effects and the perceived sensation index were recorded 24 h after each test. Results: Reaction time only improved following 6 mg/kg of caffeine intake (Physical reaction time: -0.04 s, 95% CI -0.08 to -0.01 s, P = 0.036, d = 0.5; Motor reaction time: -0.04 s, 95% CI -0.07 to -0.01 s, P = 0.008, d = 0.6) compared to the placebo condition. Anticipation, sustained attention, and memory were not affected after either caffeine dose intake (all P > 0.05). In addition, the 6 mg/kg dose of caffeine augmented the occurrence of the side effects of increased activeness (P = 0.046) and nervousness (P = 0.001). Conclusion: Acute intake of 6 mg/kg caffeine is effective in improving reaction time despite increasing the occurrence of side effects in healthy physically active young adults. Study registration: This study has been registered in ClinicalTrials whose ID is: NCT05995314 (2023-08-08). Highlights: Although caffeine is considered ergogenic at doses of 3 to 6 mg/kg body mass, we have only found significant differences with the 6 mg/kg dose. The acute intake of 6 mg/kg body mass of caffeine is effective in improving reaction time. The 6 mg/kg dose of caffeine augmented the occurrence of side effects, mainly increased activeness and nervousness. Caffeine can be a potent ergogenic aid to improve sports performance (i.e., motor and physical reaction time), however, at the cognitive level no improvements have been found with the doses used (3 and 6 mg/kg). Further research with higher doses of caffeine (i.e., 9 mg/kg) and with different protocols for measuring cognitive abilities is needed to test whether the trends shown in our study could be converted into real improvements in cognitive performance. Especially older adults are increasingly stimulated to think about, talk about and record their preferences with regard to future (health)care decisions, preferably in a pro-active manner. In this paper, I analyse these anticipatory choice processes. My goal is twofold: Firstly, to provide a deeper understanding of what it actually means to decide in advance about end-of-life treatments or options. Secondly, to make a theoretical contribution to bioethics and ACP-theories by rethinking the concept of end-of-life choices from a phenomenological viewpoint. To achieve this, I start by presenting a case narrative that elucidates how these anticipatory choices are lived. Secondly, I map out a theoretical framework about choice based on the phenomenology of the will of Paul Ricoeur. Finally, guided by this Ricoeurian framework, I investigate the potential meaning of choice in the context of contemporary advance care planning trajectories. The analysis demonstrates that choice and agency always imply notions of passivity and uncontrollability. It also indicates the significant value of hesitation and ambivalence. Moreover, it highlights the importance of the notion of co-responsibility in the context of anticipated end-of-life choices, and the relevant distinction between a (willed) choice and a wish. To improve care and support regarding end-of-life trajectories and to promote meaningful conversations, it is imperative to integrate these underrated elements more substantially in our theories, language and practical approaches. Emotions have been gradually integrated into economic analysis over the past thirty years. Hope, however, remains an emotion little mobilized by economists. None of the closely related concepts of common use in economics corresponds to the consensual definition found in psychology. By relying on notions such as expectations, aspirations, optimism, anticipations or even confidence, behavioral economics provides the first (admittedly insufficient) milestones for an economic theory of hope. By relying on the psychological theory of Richard Snyder, and comparing it to the transactional approach of John Dewey, we show that hope can be perceived as a mode of conduct capable of producing a transformation in individual behavior. By mobilizing the institutional theory of John Commons—and in particular the notion of “futurity”—it appears that the transactional conception of hope deepens the nature of anticipations in institutional theory.

Abstract Background Deceptive movements occur when an actor seeks to fake, hide or delay kinematic information about their true movement outcomes. The purpose of deceptive movements is to impair the perception of opponents (the ‘observer’) to gain an advantage over them. We argue though that a lack of conceptual clarity has led to confusion about what deception is and in understanding the different approaches by which an actor can deceive their opponent. The aim of this article is to outline a conceptual framework for understanding deceptive movements in sport. Main body Adopting Interpersonal Deception Theory from the field of communication, we define deception as when an actor deliberately alters their actions in an attempt to impair the ability of an observer to anticipate their true action outcomes. Further, deception can be achieved either by what we define as deceit, the act of providing false information, or disguise, the act of concealing the action outcome. Skilled athletes often have actions that are difficult to anticipate, but an action is only classified as containing deception if the actor has explicit intent to deceive an observer. Having outlined the conceptual framework, we then review existing empirical findings on the skilled perception of deceptive movements considering the framework. This approach includes a critical evaluation of the mechanisms known to facilitate the perceptual ability to prevent being deceived, including a consideration of visual search strategies, confidence, the contribution of visual and motor experiences, and the influence of response biases and action capabilities on perceptual performance. Conclusion The distinction between deceit and disguise particularly helps to show that most research has examined deceit, with little known about how an actor can more effectively disguise their action, or about how an observer can improve their ability to anticipate the outcome of disguised actions. The insights help to identify fruitful areas for future research and outline implications for skill acquisition and performance enhancement.

Background: In the digital era, developing effective teaching methods is crucial due to the challenges of maintaining students' concentration amidst distractions. This study assessed the effects of learning-promoting factors both across group boundaries and within RCT learning groups examined in our previous study on the effectiveness of online versus live teaching. Methods: The participants' experiences in the domains of Concentration, Anticipation, Liking and Desire to reuse were evaluated online immediately after a lesson on diagnosing pediatric respiratory issues implemented either in a Live, Live-stream, Vodcast or Podcast setting. The students rated their experiences on a scale of 1–10 with scores above a median of 8 indicating high experience levels in each factor. Learning was evaluated using a Webropol e-Test immediately and five weeks after the teaching session. The 15-minute test, comprised of 10 multiple-choice questions and real-life video scenarios, measured both theoretical and diagnostic skills. The test score scale ranged from − 26 to 28 points. Results: High concentration was experienced by 70/72 (97.2%) students in the Live, 41/75 (54.7%) students in the Live-stream, 53/72 (73.6%) students in the Vodcast and 36/79 (45.6%) students in the Podcast teaching groups (P < 0.01). High concentration promoted learning the most, resulting in a 1.93 score improvement in the short-term test and a 1.65 score improvement in the long-term test. Among those with high concentration, the average test scores ranged from 21.9 to 23.4, while the range for low concentration was 18.3–20.0. Conclusion: In our study, good concentration promoted higher test scores in comparison with low concentration across all the learning modalities, both in digital and live settings. However, the live teaching modality resulted in the highest levels of concentration. Evidence has demonstrated that athletes exhibit superior cognitive performance associated with executive control. In the oculomotor system, this function has been examined using the interleaved pro‐saccade and anti‐saccade task (IPAST), wherein participants, prior to target appearance, are instructed to either automatically look at the peripheral target (pro‐saccade) or suppress the automatic response and voluntarily look in the opposite direction (anti‐saccade). While the IPAST has provided much insight into sensorimotor and inhibitory processing, it has yet to be performed in athletes. Moreover, limited research has examined saccade metrics in athletes. Here, we examined saccade latency and movement kinematics in the IPAST among athletes (N = 40) and nonathletes (NON) (N = 40). Higher direction error rates were obtained in the anti‐saccade compared to the pro‐saccade condition, with no differences between athletes and NON noted. Significantly faster saccade latencies were observed in athletes compared to NON in both conditions, in addition to faster pro‐saccades compared to anti‐saccades. Furthermore, athletes showed significantly higher frequencies and faster latencies of express saccades compared to NON in correct pro‐saccades. Additionally, athletes exhibited significantly faster latencies of express saccades compared to NON in erroneous anti‐saccades. Differences in saccade metrics between athletes and NON were not seen. Overall, these findings demonstrate that athletes display altered saccade performance likely associated with sensorimotor and preparatory processing, highlighting the potential of using IPAST to objectively investigate sensorimotor and cognitive functions in athletes. In the 20th century, Australia's Great Barrier Reef emerged as a political battleground when governing bodies planned to turn its coral territories into a vast mining zone. But in the 21st century, as the temporalisation of the Reef exerts increasing influence on the governance, securitisation and anticipation of planetary futures, coral time has emerged as a new site of political and imaginative conflict. Responding to this shift from territory to temporality, how can we pay closer attention to those skilfully making coral time? In this article, I introduce 'dimensional friction' as a tool for considering how the temporal structure of corals intersects with the temporal structure of global climate science in a coring laboratory. Based on my fieldwork at the Australian Institute of Marine Science, I analyse simultaneously discursive, technical, and imaginative problems that emerge when scientists transform the mineral skeletons of corals into time data. Dimensional friction appears whenever this skeletal matter is manipulated, surfacing the lab-based production of vertical time-depth but also suggesting other ways of temporalising (and corporally appropriating) coral time. Viewed in this way, coral cores might be better understood as 'temporal volumes' rather than chronostratigraphic records amenable to linear timelines and trajectories. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• We investigated a motion sickness mitigation method during a real car drive. • Vibrotactile cues announcing upcoming driving manoeuvres mitigate motion sickness. • Auditory cues are less effective than vibrotactile cues in mitigating sickness. • Passengers express greater preference for vibrotactile cues. Car passengers experience much more car sickness than car drivers. We assume that this is because drivers can better anticipate the car's motions. Does helping passengers to anticipate the car's motions then mitigate car sickness? Indeed, laboratory studies have shown that anticipatory cues which announce one-dimensional motions of a linear sled mitigate sickness to a small extent. Does this mitigation generalize to real car driving? We tested this in a car ride on a test track along a trajectory involving lane changes, accelerations, and decelerations. We show that vibrotactile cues mitigated car sickness in passengers. Auditory cues were less effective. The mitigating effect of the vibrotactile cue was considerable: a 40% decrease in car sickness symptoms, a larger effect than we found in the laboratory. The way organismic agents come to know the world, and the way algorithms solve problems, are fundamentally different. The most sensible course of action for an organism does not simply follow from logical rules of inference. Before it can even use such rules, the organism must tackle the problem of relevance. It must turn ill-defined problems into well-defined ones, turn semantics into syntax. This ability to realize relevance is present in all organisms, from bacteria to humans. It lies at the root of organismic agency, cognition, and consciousness, arising from the particular autopoietic, anticipatory, and adaptive organization of living beings. In this article, we show that the process of relevance realization is beyond formalization. It cannot be captured completely by algorithmic approaches. This implies that organismic agency (and hence cognition as well as consciousness) are at heart not computational in nature. Instead, we show how the process of relevance is realized by an adaptive and emergent triadic dialectic (a trialectic), which manifests as a metabolic and ecological-evolutionary co-constructive dynamic. This results in a meliorative process that enables an agent to continuously keep a grip on its arena, its reality. To be alive means to make sense of one's world. Women can develop anticipated traumatic reactions related to the forthcoming delivery through "pretraumatic stress" symptoms. The present study aims at: a) exploring the frequency of probable pretraumatic stress disorder in primiparous pregnant women, b) evidencing associated features of pretraumatic stress symptoms and c) exploring which specific components of antenatal anxiety are associated with pretraumatic stress symptoms. A sample of 100 primiparous pregnant women completed an online questionnaire assessing pretraumatic stress, fear of childbirth, depressive and anxiety symptoms. Socio-demographic and pregnancy-related data were also gathered. 8 % of women met all criteria for probable pretraumatic stress disorder. Increased depressive symptoms (ß = 0.48, p<.05), childbirth concerns (ß = 0.47, p<.05) and worry about self (ß = 0.74; p<.05) were associated with the intensity of pretraumatic stress disorder symptoms. This study contributes to the very limited literature on pretraumatic stress symptoms. Thus, it is noteworthy that pretraumatic stress is not a reactivation of a former postpartum PTSD or associated with a prior negative experience of childbirth. Future studies conducted on primiparous women with no history of traumatic exposure could allow to provide additional evidences of the existence of anticipated traumatic reactions of childbirth. Purpose: This paper aims to identify the aspects that social actors consider in constructing shared futures in communities. In their application in emerging countries, especially in the Global South, the socio-cultural particularities of communities and actors are often overlooked, generating friction or social conflicts. This paper presents two critical elements contributing to the debate: the importance of understanding Social Actors within a model of generating community futures in emerging countries; and the relevant factors that influence the actors in an exercise of building futures in communities. Design/methodology/approach: From qualitative research, a case study of community foresight of the future was used: the future of Puerto Gaitán 2037 (Meta, Colombia). A method of information collection was applied from observation of the participants and analysis of documentation. The analysis method was the deductive qualitative analysis (DQA). Findings: The participation of the social actors presents a model of five relevant elements that influence the actors for the successful construction of futures in communities. The first four factors, revealed from theory, are presented in real life. Likewise, a fifth factor is proven, Long-term thinking, which is evidenced by a model of application of futures studies for the specific context, applicable to the case of communities in countries of the Global South. Originality/value: Although there are isolated examples of recommendations regarding studies to generate the future of communities, to the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first study that presents concrete factors that contribute to guiding the construction of community futures from social actors, especially in countries of the Global South such as Colombia. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to nurture reflections on the colonization of the future in the present with a particular focus on Africa. This paper aims at exploring how participatory research and particularly anticipatory action research can contribute to a decolonising process. Design/methodology/approach: Considering the future as a public good, this paper develops a reflection on the colonization processes that can turn it into a club or a private good. This paper mobilizes the notions of participatory knowledge production and local action research as a way to decolonize the future and empower imagination. This paper revisits the tenets of participatory action research as a means to achieve this objective and discusses the main features of a non-colonial anticipatory action research in the context of African futures. Findings: This paper highlights the challenges associated with connecting anticipatory endeavours focusing on action research, the creation of collective intelligence and co-design, with the intention of encouraging the decolonisation process. It includes design principles and anticipates a possible process of counter-decolonization. Research limitations/implications: This is a conceptual paper, which does not provide field-tested evidence. Yet, the authors hope it serves as an input enabling to design methodologies that will prevent the colonisation of the future when engaging in future-oriented research activities in Africa and elsewhere. Originality/value: This paper provides an integral approach to the colonisation of the future, as a renewed old question. Objectif: L'objectif visé est de nourrir les réflexions sur la colonisation du futur dans le présent en mettant particulièrement l'accent sur le continent africain. Conception/méthodologie/approche: Considérant le futur comme un bien public, nous mobilisons une réflexion sur les processus coloniaux qui l'ont transformé, à bien des égards, en bien de club ou en bien privé. Nous revisitons ensuite les principes de la recherche-action participative pour atteindre cet objectif et nous examinons les principales caractéristiques d'une recherche-action anticipatoire non coloniale dans le contexte des futurs de l'Afrique. Résultats: Nous mettons en évidence les défis issus de la relation entre les efforts d'anticipation axés sur la recherche-action, la création d'une intelligence collective et la co-conception (codesign), dans le but d'encourager le processus de décolonisation. Cette démarche inclut des principes de conception, établit les bases pour un processus anticipatoire, potentiellement décolonial et envisage une possible réaction du système dominant à l'encontre de ce processus de décolonisation. Implications/limitations: Il s'agit d'un travail conceptuel, qui ne fournit pas d'éléments testés sur le terrain. Toutefois, nous espérons que cela constituera un apport permettant de concevoir des méthodologies qui préviendront la colonisation du futur lors de la participation à des activités de recherche tournées vers les futurs en Afrique et ailleurs. In this paper, we introduce the delayed-advanced Kaldorian business cycle model and consider how time-delay and time-advance affect economic fluctuations. Given the asymptotic stability of the original Kaldor model, we first show that an approximated Kaldor model by a Taylor series expansion can accurately describe the dynamics of the delayed Kaldor model. We also confirm that the delay has a destabilizing effect. When time-delay is replaced with time-advance, we have an advanced Kaldor model. Taking the advanced capital stock formulation, we derive the stability conditions and find that the time-advance has a stabilizing effect. In most major cities today, various shared mobility systems such as car or bike sharing exist. Maintaining these systems is challenging, and, thus, public and private providers strive to improve operational performance. An important metric which is regularly recorded and monitored in practice for this purpose is idle time, i.e., the time a vehicle stands unused between two rentals. Usually, it is available for different temporal and spatial granularities. At the same time, dynamic pricing has been shown to be an efficient means for increasing operational performance in shared mobility systems, but data necessary for traditional dynamic pricing approaches, like unconstrained demand, is much less available in practice. Thus, dynamic pricing based on idle time data appears promising and first ideas have been proposed. However, the existing approaches are based either on simple business rules or on myopic optimization. In this work, we develop a novel dynamic pricing approach that determines prices by online optimization and thereby anticipates future profits through the integration of idle time data. The core idea is quantifying the remaining profitable time by using idle times. With regard to application in practice, the developed approach is generic in the sense that different types of readily available historical idle time data can be seamlessly integrated, meaning data of different spatio-temporal granularities. In an extensive numerical study, we demonstrate that the operational performance increases with higher granularity and that the approach with the highest one outperforms current pricing practice by up to 11% in terms of profit. Motivation: In the three years before 2023, we have seen multiple parallel crises—from climate emergencies to economic instability, dramatic increases in costs of living, and political insecurities. Looming larger than the risks is the resultant uncertainty. Development agents, including governments, are historically unprepared for managing converging crisis. When risks are analysed and governed in narrow ways, the historically oppressed and excluded continue to carry the brunt of impact. Purpose: This article reflects on the question: How can institutions, including governments, become more anticipatory against this backdrop, to ensure that their policy and investment choices do not leave anyone behind due to lack of preparedness? Approach and methods: It draws insights from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Asia and the Pacific's efforts since 2020 to apply more future‐fit planning and programming, recognizing that foresight is not an end in itself, but a mechanism for shaping more anticipatory institutions. It is based on qualitative learning synthesized from over three years of work to establish new systems, capabilities and processes for UNDP and its partners to engage in anticipatory risk and planning. Findings: Practices rooted in strategic foresight and anticipation can support institutions to incorporate long‐term thinking in planning and analysis, but their translation into development decisions and investments requires shifts in perspectives and risk appetite. Historically, strategic foresight has not been mainstreamed within international organizations and governments owing to: failing to embed anticipation into core systems and processes; giving more attention to tools and building skills than to the demand for alternative decision‐making models and to risk tolerance; relying overly on external support and static models; insufficiently attending to organizational culture and relational drivers of thinking and action. Policy implications: We suggest four interconnected levers to help sustain impact and equity when bringing anticipatory approaches into policy processes: ensure design elasticity to encourage local, context‐specific models of anticipatory decision‐making; build anticipatory systems as a base to understand future risks, harms, and correlating impacts; interrogate what counts as legitimate and relevant evidence for policy decisions; cultivate imagination as an act of inquiry. This paper provides a justificatory rationale for recommending the inclusion of imagined future use cases in neurotechnology development processes, specifically for legal and policy ends. Including detailed imaginative engagement with future applications of neurotechnology can serve to connect ethical, legal, and policy issues potentially arising from the translation of brain stimulation research to the public consumer domain. Futurist scholars have for some time recommended approaches that merge creative arts with scientific development in order to theorise possible futures toward which current trends in technology development might be steered. Taking a creative, imaginative approach like this in the neurotechnology context can help move development processes beyond considerations of device functioning, safety, and compliance with existing regulation, and into an active engagement with potential future dynamics brought about by the emergence of the neurotechnology itself. Imagined scenarios can engage with potential consumer uses of devices that might come to challenge legal or policy contexts. An anticipatory, creative approach can imagine what such uses might consist in, and what they might imply. Justifying this approach also prompts a co-responsibility perspective for policymaking in technology contexts. Overall, this furnishes a mode of neurotechnology’s emergence that can avoid crises of confidence in terms of ethico-legal issues, and promote policy responses balanced between knowledge, values, protected innovation potential, and regulatory safeguards. This commentary explores historical efforts to diagnose the present and project the future through the specific example of medical manpower planning. To situate this, it draws on work within and across geography exploring the concept of anticipation and considers the discipline's failure to adequately engage with healthcare workers, despite the vibrancy of health geography as a subdiscipline. As it explores, ensuring adequate numbers of staff in a healthcare system has been an issue for as long as there have been healthcare systems. Planning for healthcare system needs is thus a particularly fraught form of anticipation that seeks to project future needs from a contested and often incalculable present as a basis for political decision‐making and resource allocation. This article offers some reflections on some features of human consciousness that are in need of an explanation. I wish to see if these features could be understood as solutions to design problems, solutions arrived at by evolution, but also, in the individual, as a result of a process of unconscious self-design. I consider this issue in the context of work in AI on the attempt to design intelligent robots-not "bed-ridden" expert systems, but systems that have to act in real time in the real world. How then does one partition the task of the robot so that it is apt to make reliable real time decisions? Any real, finite deliberator must partition the states of its world in such a way as to introduce the concept of possibility. This idea of partitioning the world into "possible" alternatives that remain "open" is very clearly the introduction of a concept of epistemic possibility. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a prominent contributor to global mortality rates. The principal aim of this research is to employ machine learning techniques to anticipate the early actions needed to prevent the disease from progressing. The timely identification of individuals with a heightened risk of developing CVD plays an important role in implementing early interventions to impede disease progression. Machine learning techniques have shown promise in predicting CVD risk. For this paper, we propose a comprehensive CVD prediction model using ML techniques. Our approach utilizes a substantial dataset of electronic health records (EHRs) for training and validating our model. Through the incorporation of feature engineering, feature selection, and model optimization techniques, we have reached a high level of accuracy and interpretability. To evaluate the prediction of cardiovascular disease (CVD) threats, we compare the performance of various popular ML algorithms, such as logistic regression, random forest, and Support Vector Machine. Our findings point towards that our proposed model improve on existing approaches in regard of both accuracy and efficiency. This model can efficiently recognize individuals with an elevated risk of developing CVD, enabling early interventions to prevent the onset and progression of the disease. Additionally, we perform a acatalectic analysis of the features that contribute most to the assessment of CVD risk, providing insights into the underlying mechanisms of the disease. We also evaluate the robustness of our model by testing its performance on a separate dataset. Furthermore, we discuss the clinical implications of our proposed model, highlighting the potential benefits of using ML techniques in identifying individuals at high risk of developing CVD. Our model can aid in personalized medicine and facilitate the delivery of targeted interventions to high-risk individuals, thereby improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. When it comes to treating severe stages of cardiovascular disease, preventive treatments are typically more economical. Our approach can assist in lessening the financial burden related to CVD by lowering hospital stays, ER visits, and long-term care expenses via early detection of high-risk individuals and implementation of focused therapies. In summary, our model presents a robust solution for utilizing machine learning techniques to envisage the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Our study targets to provide the expanding field of research regarding the application of machine learning in healthcare. This article analyzes how serious games can be used to understand the future spatio-temporal dynamics of territorial systems in the context of environmental and territorial transition. The selected games are territorial planning games. They share a forward-looking approach that encourages actors/participants, together in a workshop, to collectively project themselves into the future and imagine possible developments for their territory over the long term. The first part illustrates the value of including a serious game in a territorial project by using four examples of games that are representative of operational methods, tailored to a specific audience and project phase. The second part focuses on serious games integrated into research aimed at anticipating future spatial changes resulting from climate change adaptation measures. Two games based on the geoprospective method are presented. The third part centers on one of these two games, explaining its role in the research, the game phases, and the lessons learned from feedback.
