2. High yield production of ultrathin fibroid semiconducting nanowire of Ta$_2$Pd$_3$Se$_8$

Abstract

Immediately after the demonstration of the high-quality electronic properties in various two dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals fabricated with mechanical exfoliation, many methods have been reported to explore and control large scale fabrications. Comparing with recent advancements in fabricating 2D atomic layered crystals, large scale production of one dimensional (1D) nanowires with thickness approaching molecular or atomic level still remains stagnant. Here, we demonstrate the high yield production of a 1D vdW material, semiconducting Ta2Pd3Se8 nanowires, by means of liquid-phase exfoliation. The thinnest nanowire we have readily achieved is around 1 nm, corresponding to a bundle of one or two molecular ribbons. Transmission electron microscopy and transport measurements reveal the as-fabricated Ta2Pd3Se8 nanowires exhibit unexpected high crystallinity and chemical stability. Our low frequency Raman spectroscopy reveals clear evidence of the existing of weak inter-ribbon bindings. The fabricated nanowire transistors exhibit high switching performance and promising applications for photodetectors.

Abstract

The graphane with chemically bonded alkali metals (Li, Na, K) was considered as potential material for hydrogen storage. The ab initio calculations show that such material can adsorb as many as 4 hydrogen molecules per Li, Na and K metal atoms. These values correspond to 12.20 wt%, 10.33 wt% and 8.56 wt% of hydrogen, respectively and exceed the DOE requirements. The thermodynamic analysis shows that Li-graphane complex is the most promising for hydrogen storage with ability to adsorb 3 hydrogen molecules per metal atom at 300 K and pressure in the range from 5 to 250 atm., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Iron-based catalysts are gaining increased attention as promising and cost-effective materials for CO2 recycling. Their properties can be tuned by careful selection of the appropriate synthesis route, substrate, and catalytic system components. For the first time, a nanostructured material consisting of heterostructures of layered ferrihydrite (Fh) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanoparticles has been obtained. Subsequent annealing ensures a uniform distribution of Fe nanoparticles (FeNPs) on the h-BN surfaces. Small Ag additions to the system lead to a significant decrease in the average size of FeNPs, presumably due to a seeding mechanism. Catalytic tests have shown that a low Ag content has a positive effect on the catalytic activity. Stability testing has demonstrated that the catalytic properties of the Fh/BN system improve over time, as does selectivity toward high-value-added hydrocarbons. Computational methods suggest a surface atomic configuration in which one Ag atom substitutes for one Fe atom in the (110) plane, resulting in better CO2 adsorption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline solution is hindered by its sluggish kinetics toward water dissociation. Nickel-based catalysts, as low-cost and effective candidates, show great potentials to replace platinum (Pt)-based materials in the alkaline media. The main challenge regarding this type of catalysts is their relatively poor durability. In this work, we conceive and construct a charge-polarized carbon layer derived from carbon quantum dots (CQDs) on Ni3N nanostructure (Ni3N@CQDs) surfaces, which simultaneously exhibit durability and enhanced catalytic activity. The Ni3N@CQDs shows an overpotential of 69 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in a 1 M KOH aqueous solution, lower than that of Pt electrode (116 mV) at the same conditions. Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations reveal that Ni3N and interfacial oxygen polarize charge distributions between originally equal C-C bonds in CQDs. The partially negatively charged C sites become effective catalytic centers for the key water dissociation step via the formation of new C-H bond (Volmer step), and thus boost the HER activity. Furthermore, the coated carbon is also found to protect interior Ni3N from oxidization/hydroxylation, and therefore guarantees its durability. This work provides a practical design of robust and durable HER electrocatalysts based on non-precious metals.

Abstract

We have developed advanced folate bonded to boron nitride (BN) nanocarriers with a high potential for targeted drug-delivery. The folic acid (FA) molecules were successfully conjugated to BN nanoparticles (BNNPs) in three consecutive stages: (i) FA pre-activation by N,N'- dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC), (ii) BNNP modification by AgNPs and their further NH2-functionalization with L-Cysteine, and (iii) final conjugation of activated FA to modified BNNPs. To shed a light on the FA-BNNPs binding mechanism, detailed energetic analysis of the atomic structure and stability of the FA-BNNPs system using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations was carried out.The results indicated that the FA was successfully bonded with the BNNPs by a condensation reaction between amino groups of Cyst-Ag/BNNPs and carboxyl groups of FA using DCC. Theoretical analysis also demonstrated that the grafting of FA to the surface of BNNP does not affect FA targeting properties.

Abstract

Theoretical analysis of experimental data on unzipping multilayered WS(2) nanotubes by consequent intercalation of lithium atoms and 1-octanethiol molecules [C. Nethravathi, et al., ACS Nano, 2013, 7, 7311] is presented. The radial expansion of the tube was described using continuum thin-walled cylinder approximation with parameters evaluated from ab initio calculations. Assuming that the attractive driving force of the 1-octanethiol molecule is its reaction with the intercalated Li ions ab initio calculations of a 1-octanethiol molecule bonding with Li(+) were carried out. In addition, the non-chemical interactions of the 1-octanethiol dipole with an array of positive point charges representing Li(+) were taken into account. Comparing between the energy gain from these interactions and the elastic strain energy of the nanotube allows us to evaluate a value for the tube wall deformation after the implantation of 1-octanethiol molecules. The ab initio molecular dynamics simulation confirmed our estimates and demonstrated that a strained WS(2) nanotube, with a decent concentration of 1-octanethiol molecules, should indeed be unzipped into the WS(2) nanoribbon.

33. The Temperature Dependence of the Hexagonal Boron Nitride Oxidation Resistance, Insights from First-Principle Computations.

Abstract

In this work, we studied the oxidation stability of h-BN by investigating different variants of its modification by -OH, -O- and -O-O- groups using an atomistic thermodynamics approach. We showed that up to temperatures of ~1700 K, oxygen is deposited on the surface of hexagonal boron nitride without dissociation, in the form of peroxide. Only at higher temperatures, oxygen tends to be incorporated into the lattice of hexagonal boron nitride, except in the presence of defects N v , when the embedding occurs at all temperatures. Finally, the electronic and magnetic properties of the oxidized h-BN were studied.
