No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-02-01 Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação, Universidade Federal do Pará Universidade Federal do Pará Objectives: This study evaluated the effect of photobiomodulation (PBM) combined with 8% strontium acetate (SA8%) in the treatment of dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in non-carious lesions and analyzed the risk factors with the patient’s quality of life. Methods: Eighty teeth with DH were randomly allocated into four treatment groups (n = 20): G1, PBM imitation + toothpaste with no active ingredient; G2, PBM imitation + toothpaste with SA8%; G3, PBM + toothpaste without the active ingredient; and G4, PBM + toothpaste with SA8%. Participants were provided with a questionnaire on the experience of dentin hypersensitivity (QEDH) to assess the impact of desensitizing treatment on health-related quality of life (HRQL). Friedman and Kruskal–Wallis tests were used for intra- and intergroup comparisons, and Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney tests were used to analyze HRQL. All analyses used significance levels of 5%. Results: Intergroup comparisons revealed a significant difference (p < 0.05); G4 had the best response in terms of HD reduction in G4 compared to the other groups on the 7th day of assessment (T3). Only G4 showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) in the reduction of EDH for intragroup analysis. Conclusion: The combination of therapies was more effective in reducing DH than the isolated use of these strategies. Clinical relevance: The combination of therapies is effective in the treatment of DH. Objective This split-mouth randomized controlled clinical trial assessed the effect of 10% strontium chloride in combination with photobiomodulation (PBM) for the control of tooth sensitivity (TS) post-bleaching. Methods The upper/lower, right and left quadrants of fifty volunteers were randomized and allocated to four groups (n = 25): PLACEBO—placebo gel + simulation of PBM; Placebo + PBM; STRONTIUM—10% strontium chloride + simulation of PBM; and PBM + STRONTIUM—10% strontium chloride + PBM. All groups received tooth bleaching treatment with 35% hydrogen peroxide. For the PBM treatment, the laser tip was positioned in the apical and cervical regions of the teeth bleached in the respective hemi-arch. The laser system was operated in continuous mode, using 1.7 J of energy. A dose of 60 J/cm2 was applied to each point for 16 seconds under 808 nm near-infrared light (100mW of power), with a point area of 0.028 cm2. TS was assessed during a 21-day follow-up, using the modified visual analogue scale. Results In the intragroup assessment, the Friedman test indicated that PBM + STRONTIUM promoted the greatest reduction in TS after the second week of treatment (p ≤ 0.05). The Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test indicated that the groups Placebo + PBM, STRONTIUM, and STRONTIUM + PBM did not differ statistically (p ≥ 0.05) in the first and third weeks of treatment The group PLACEBO exhibited the greatest TS in the first three days after each bleaching session. Conclusion The combination of 10% strontium chloride with PBM was effective in reducing post-bleaching TS; however, the combination of 10% strontium chloride with PBM was effective in reducing post-bleaching TS; however, it did not differ from the individual use of Placebo + PBM or STRONTIUM groups assessed after 21 days of follow-up.

Introduction: Home bleaching is a popular cosmetic technique that delivers quick results, reduces chair time, and has a lower risk of side effects compared to office bleaching. Aim: To evaluate the effect of nano-hydroxyapatite (n-HAP) and arginine on Bleach-Sensitive Teeth (BST) and colour change after at-home bleaching treatment across three months of follow-up. Materials and Methods: Sixty subjects were randomly allocated into one of three groups (n=20): 1) CONTROL, treated with 22% carbamide peroxide (CP)+toothpaste without a desensitising agent; 2) NANO, treated with CP +n-HAP; and 3) ARGININE, treated with CP + arginine. An air jet was used to evaluate BST associated with a modified Visual Analog Scale (VAS). A spectrophotometer was used to measure the colour of the maxillary incisors. Results: The Friedman vs Kruskal-Wallis tests showed that the BST reported in the experimental groups was lower when compared with the control group one day after the end of treatment (p≤0.05). However, no significant difference was observed at 30, 60 or 90 days of evaluation (p>0.05). ANOVA showed no significant difference between groups when comparing mean ∆E (p>0.05). Conclusion: The subjects treated with n-HAP and arginine presented lower sensitivity when compared to the control group one day after the end of treatment. In addition, there was no impairment of the efficacy of the at-home bleaching treatment over the 90-day evaluation period.

The study consisted of a laboratory analysis evaluating the degree of color compatibility of the composite resin of the brand Opallis FGM in relation to the Vita Classical color scale. Composite resin specimens were prepared for enamel and dentin in the colors EA1, EA2, EA3, A3,5, DA2 and DA3,5. Data on resin color compatibility with Vita color scale were counted using the Vita Easyshade Advance spectrophotometer (Vita Zahnfabrink, Germany). The values ​​collected were ΔE; L; C; H and *, with only the values ​​of ΔE considered for analysis. The value of ΔE ≤ 3.3 was adopted as reference for similarity to the VITA scale standard. The results were analyzed through the Bioestat® Program (version 5.3). The decrease tendency of ΔE was observed as the resin thickness was increased, but acceptable numbers were only achieved in the combinations. It was concluded that it is essential to associate enamel and dentin resins to obtain acceptable values.

This case report describes a 12-year-old child diagnosed with cerebral palsy who was attended in the dental service in October 2012 with a chief complaint of caries. The dental history revealed that the child had difficulty in opening his mouth, chewing, and swallowing. In the intraoral examination, the patient had an atretic palate, fibrous gingiva, gingival bleeding, malocclusion, and presence of calculus in the supra and subgingival regions and presented epilepsy and low weight. In the complementary examinations, blood pressure was checked and the blood count was read. The treatment plan was done with scraping in the upper and inferior jaw, 4 sessions of polishing, and prophylaxis. During the treatment, the surgical removal of elements 44 and 42 was performed, and it was decided to perform another tooth extraction, after the complete healing, of element 31. The patient was followed up by the service for 5 years and died in 2017.

Hydrocephalus is a pathology characterized by increased head circumference and intracranial pressure with cerebrospinal fluid expansion. Goldenhar syndrome is a congenital anomaly due to errors in morphogenesis, causing variations in the face, ears, and vertebra, constantly associated with other congenital visceral malformations. This article aims to describe the case of a 5-year-old boy diagnosed as having hydrocephalus associated with Goldenhar syndrome. He was referred by a multidisciplinary medical team for the dental evaluation to adapt the oral environment because of the high tooth decay occurrence. This adequacy was achieved through prophylaxis, fluoride application, supervised brushing, restorations, periapical radiographs for exodontia, and educational activities with those who take care of the patient. The team concluded that treatment should be carried out with a multidisciplinary approach, seeking to improve the appearance and functionality of the affected structures and aiming at preventive control to ensure their psychosocial integration.

The 22 q11.2 deletion syndrome, also known as DiGeorge syndrome, is the subject of the loss of a submicroscopic segment of DNA in the 22 q11.2 region. It presents a great variability of clinical characteristics in affected individuals. Among the clinical manifestations are fissure of the palate, nasal speech, cardiovascular problems, and dysmorphic facial features. This case report describes a 15-year-old girl, clinically diagnosed as having DiGeorge syndrome, who attended a dental service for patients with special needs presenting with malocclusion, difficulty in chewing, and suspected heart disease. The patient was diagnosed with mixed developmental disorder and epilepsy, both uncontrolled, presenting pictures of hallucinations in the dental chair. The treatment plan was established through panoramic radiography, complete blood count, and medical release. Restorations, prophylaxis, scaling with fluorine application, and exodontia of elements 74, 83, and 84 were realized. The patient is still being treated at the dental health service.

The dentigerous cyst is the second odontogenic cyst that most affects the maxilla. The patient attended in service of oral pathology in 2015 with asymptomatic lesion and without paresthesia, hypoesthesia, or other complaints in the maxillary sinus. Extraoral examination showed volume increasing in the left middle third of the face and exophthalmos of the left ocular globe. Radiography revealed delimitation and extension of area. Aspiration puncture confirmed the cystic nature. Incisional biopsy was performed with histopathologic diagnosis of dentigerous cyst. The treatment consisted in marsupialization and monthly analysis of the lesion regression for 1 year and 6 months along with a tomographic examination, obtaining satisfactory regression. The patient was submitted to surgery removing the entire lesion and associated tooth. After 2 months of follow-up, the patient is in good general condition, without signs of recurrence and without sensory or motor deficit.

Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder caused by trisomy in chromosome 21.The oral cavity manifests many changes induced by the environment as well as alteration in immune system. The objective is to report a 12-year-old male pediatric dental patient who is attended in the dental care service for patients with special needs. He was a heart patient and a carrier of Down syndrome, presenting aggressiveness and endurance on the dental attendance. His problem was a toothache; however, the clinical examination verified mixed dentition, periodontal disease, high incidence of dental caries, malocclusion, staining on teeth, mouth breathing, narrow palate, and macroglossia. The treatment was accomplished through adequacy, prophylaxis, fluoride application, restorations, periapical radiography to exodontia, and the "hug technique." The importance of orientation about the dental health care of patients with Down syndrome to the professional teams is essential, beyond proper procedure and knowledge about the oral characteristics and how a dental surgeon could act to promote the integrality.
