In practice, however, we still find a largely static approach for measuring software quality based on a predefined list of complexity metrics with static thresholds to fulfill. Abstract

Software-intensive Systems-of-Systems (SoS) refer to an arrangement of managerially and operationally independent systems(i.e., constituent systems), which work collaboratively towards the achievement of global missions. Because some SoS are developed for critical domains, such as healthcare and transportation, there is an increasing need to attain higher quality levels, which often justifies additional costs that can be incurred by adopting formal and semi-formal approaches (i.e., languages and techniques) for modeling requirements. Various approaches have been employed, but a detailed landscape is still missing, and it is not well known whether they are appropriate for addressing the inherent characteristics of SoS. The main contribution of this article is to present this landscape by reporting on the state of the art in SoS requirements modeling. This landscape was built by means of a systematic mapping and shows formal and semi-formal approaches grouped from model-based to property-oriented ones. Most of them have been tested in safety-critical domains, where formal approaches such as finite state machines are aimed at critical system parts, while semi-formal approaches (e.g., UML and i*) address non-critical parts. Although formal and semi-formal modeling is an essential activity, the quality of SoS requirements does not rely solely on which formalism is used, but also on the availability of supporting tools/mechanisms that enable, for instance, requirements verification along the SoS lifecycle

12. An Investigation of Knowledge Gaps of Graduate Students Regarding Safety-Critical Systems Development: A Controlled Experiment

Abstract

Contribution: This article details the conduction of an experiment to investigate the knowledge that computer science graduate students have about safety-critical systems development, in particular, safety requirements specifications. Future research directions are also discussed. Background: Safety-critical systems have been increasingly used in many critical domains, requiring a rigorous development process as well as certification by regulatory agencies. However, it is not clear whether computer science courses deliver adequate education for students to develop such systems. Experimental research with these students could provide evidence on whether they have the minimum knowledge necessary to develop safety-critical systems. This type of research presents several advantages, such as reproducibility, high-level control, and specific conclusions, but has not been widely adopted to verify learning issues. Research Question: How to measure the understanding of students on safety-critical systems development? Methodology: A controlled experiment was conducted with computer science graduate students in which they prepared safety requirements specifications. Three variables, i.e., understandability of the tasks, accuracy of the specifications, and effort required, were analyzed. Findings: This experiment made it possible to explicitly measure the effect of understandability on accuracy and effort. Our experimental scenario revealed that most graduate students do not know about safety engineering. Hence, it is paramount to rethink computer science curricula to include basic safety engineering concepts and how software-engineering-specific knowledge should be considered in the development of these systems. Besides, software architecture must receive special attention, as it is the backbone of all software-based systems, including safety-critical systems.

Abstract

The 4th Industrial Revolution, also known as Industry 4.0, intends to transform manufacturing processes into smart factories with full digitalization and intelligent, decentralized, and flexible production. In this scenario, Industry 4.0 systems (i.e., software‐intensive systems that automate smart factories) have required rigorous and continuous development, but smart factory companies often have difficulty dealing with Requirements Engineering (RE) where requirements continuously change and emerge at runtime to support the changeability of complex production processes. Such requirements encompass engineering (e.g., mechanical, electrical, electronic, production/manufacturing) and business areas and involve the vertical and horizontal integration of heterogeneous manufacturing systems. There is also a lack of a panorama of how Industry 4.0 projects have performed with RE activities. The main goal of this paper is to present the state‐of‐the‐art research concerning RE in Industry 4.0 and draw attention to the next most urgent steps. For this, we selected and examined studies that address RE for Industry 4.0, noting that much of this literature is recent but does not fully address the complexity and dynamism of the requirements for Industry 4.0. Grounded on these studies and our academic and industry experience, we highlight the need for Continuous Requirements Engineering (CRE) for Industry 4.0. Significance and Practitioner Points: The main implications of this paper are: (i) For researchers: It offers the state of the art of RE in the context of Industry 4.0 and points out several important open issues that require an urgent investigation through new research topics; and (ii) For practitioners: It provides directions for new or even existing Industry 4.0 projects on how to deal with RE activities aiming to overcome the several challenges to perform them. Se sintetiza una parte de los resultados de investigación sobre la dinámica política y económica de Brasil y México entre 2003 y 2015, que compara gobiernos de signo progresista en el primer caso y neoliberal en el segundo. En este artículo se procura determinar en qué medida sus diferentes tasas de crecimiento obedecieron a un contexto externo favorable (marcado por el alza de los commodities que la región exporta), o decorrieron de discrepancias en la política aplicada. Se caracteriza la regulación económica implementada en cada caso, y se pondera la incidencia de la variación de sus términos de intercambio sobre su desempeño económico. Nuestras conclusiones apuntan que hubo diferencias relevantes en la política de cada gobierno; no obstante, sus diferencias en cuanto a crecimiento económico tienen origen externo.
