1. Enhancing Lightpath QoT Computation With Machine Learning in Partially Disaggregated Optical Networks

Abstract

Increasing traffic demands are causing network operators to adopt disaggregated and open networking solutions to better exploit optical transmission capacity, and consequently enable a software-defined networking (SDN) approach to control and management that encompasses the WDM data transport layer. In these frameworks, a quality of transmission estimator (QoT-E) that gives the generalized signal-to-noise ratio (GSNR) is commonly used to compute the feasibility of transparent lightpaths (LP)s, taking into account the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise and the nonlinear interference (NLI). In general, the ASE noise is the main contributor to the GSNR and is also the most challenging noise component to evaluate in a scenario with varying spectral loads, due to fluctuations in the optical amplifier responses. In this work, we propose a machine learning (ML) algorithm that is trained using different ASE-shaped spectral loads in order to predict the OSNR component of the GSNR; this methodology is subsequently used in combination with a QoT-E in the lightpath computation engine (L-PCE). We present an experiment on a point-to-point optical line system (OLS), including 9 commercial erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA)s used as black-boxes, each with variable gain and tilt values, and 8 fibers that are characterized by distinct physical parameters. Within this experiment, we receive the signal at the end of the OLS, measuring the bit-error-rate (BER) and the power spectrum, over 2520 different spectral loads. From this dataset, we extract the expected GSNRs and their linear and nonlinear components. Through joint application of a ML algorithm and the open-source GNPy library, we obtain a complete QoT-E, demonstrating that a reliable and accurate LP feasibility predictor may be implemented.

Abstract

This paper presents an experimental demonstration of bidirectional 4-PAM transmission for intra-datacenter links using a pair of SMF fibers. In the proposed architecture, each transceiver laser feeds both fibers, which are thus used bidirectionally to double the capacity per used fiber, wavelength, and laser. Besides the experimental demonstration, we also report a theoretical and simulative investigation on the penalty induced in this architecture by spurious connector back-reflections. We show that the resulting penalty can be kept under control for typical realistic connector reflection values, provided that each pair of lasers in both directions are separated by at least twice the system symbol rate.

Abstract

We investigate on a two-fiber short-reach self-homodyne coherent transmission system without optical amplification, where the same transmission laser is used to generate a modulated signal carrying useful data and a continuous wave signal, which serves as a local oscillator at the receiver side. Target of the work is to determine by experiments and theoretical models under which conditions DFB lasers can be used instead of more expensive ECL lasers. After careful characterization of lasers phase noise in terms of linewidth as a function of the mismatch between the optical paths of the signal and of the local oscillator, the performance of two laser technologies is investigated in the proposed transmission setup, showing that commercial DFB laser can be used, provided that the optical path mismatch between the two fibers is kept below 1.8 meter for 28 GBaud PM-QPSK and 0.8 meter for PM-16QAM modulation format in combination with a soft-decision forward error correction algorithm. After an experimental demonstration, we theoretically investigate the scalability laws of the proposed systems in different configuration flavours.

Abstract

Digital subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) has recently emerged as a promising solution for next-generation ultra-high-baudrate coherent optical communication systems. Among its distinctive advantages over traditional single-carrier modulation, SCM enables the exploitation of symbol-rate optimization (SRO), which has been shown to enable the passive mitigation of the nonlinear interference noise (NLIN) that is generated during propagation over dispersion-unmanaged optical fiber systems. However, the full exploitation of SRO-based NLIN mitigation is severely hindered by the uncompensated distortion caused by laser phase noise (LPN) and non-linear phase noise (NLPN), whose impact is magnified by the use of low-baudrate subcarriers. Resorting to low-complexity carrier phase estimation (CPE) algorithms, in this paper we experimentally demonstrate that it is possible to overcome the hurdles posed by LPN and NLPN in SCM systems, provided that adequate joint-subcarrier CPE processing is employed. A dual-stage joint-processing approach composed of a pilot-based CPE optionally followed by a blind phase search (BPS)-based estimator is implemented and experimentally assessed, enabling to effectively optimize the symbol-rate per subcarrier down to 3 GBaud, in accordance with the theoretical SRO predictions for the system under test. In addition, we demonstrate that signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gains of more than 1 dB can be achieved through joint-subcarrier CPE processing in shorter-reach links, while this gain tends to progressively reduce with increasing propagation distance, down to about 0.5 dB gain after 3000 km propagation.
