The aim of the present study is to clearly state what nursing functions and tasks were in force in Spain in the 17th c. with emphasis on the teaching of nursing. The method used here has been based on the historical analysis of Simón López's Manual: «Guidelines for nurses and volunteers for the caring of body illnesses» (1668). The following conclusions have been reached: Simón López's work shows the existence of the four nursing functions which are recognized in nursing nowadays: care, teaching, administration and research. López's work accurately describes the teaching activities carried out during that period. His text has been considered a key piece in the understanding of Spanish nursing in the 17th c.

- Abstract

Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. The Ariel payload is developed by a consortium of more than 50 institutes from 16 ESA countries, which include the UK, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Spain, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, and a NASA contribution., Comment: Ariel Definition Study Report, 147 pages. This figure increased 14% in 2002, comparing to 2001, showing inconsistency, or lack of prevention. This research proposes a method for the identification of hazards and evaluation and control of risks in buildings job sites as a routine. The proposed method consists of spread sheets for the Identification of Hazards and Evaluation and Control of Risks, for construction activities, guided by OHSAS 18002 and ILO-OSH 2001, complemented by NR-18 Guidelines. With these nurses, a way of understanding Nursing arrived in Andalusia, which already had a very important social recognition at the beginning of the 17th century. Within their ideal of life as nurses, the Obregones brothers included assisting the sick poor even in the most difficult and dramatic conditions, such as the epidemics that ravaged all of Andalusia between the 16th and 17th centuries and they did so with knowledge, nursing cares, therapeutic and existing remedies at the time.

Context. Systematic theoretical calculations of Doppler beaming factors are scarce in the literature, particularly in the case of white dwarfs. Additionally, there are no specific calculations for the limb-darkening coefficients of 3D white dwarf models. Aims. The objective of this research is to provide the astronomical community with Doppler beaming calculations for a wide range of effective temperatures, local gravities, and hydrogen/metal content for white dwarfs as well as stars on both the main sequence and the giant branch. In addition, we present the theoretical calculations of the limb-darkening coefficients for 3D white dwarf models for the first time. Methods. We computed Doppler beaming factors for DA, DB, and DBA white dwarf models, as well as for main sequence and giant stars covering the transmission curves of the Sloan, UBVRI, HiPERCAM, Kepler, TESS, and Gaia photometric systems. The calculations of the limb-darkening coefficients for 3D models were carried out using the least-squares method for these photometric systems. Results. The input physics of the white dwarf models for which we have computed the Doppler beaming factors are: chemical compositions log [H/He] = -10.0 (DB), -2.0 (DBA), and He/H = 0 (DA), with log g varying between 5.0 and 9.5 and effective temperatures in the range 3750-100 000 K. The beaming factors were also calculated assuming non-local thermodynamic equilibrium for the case of DA white dwarfs with Teff > 40 000 K. For the mixing-length parameters, we adopted ML2/α = 0.8 (DA case) and 1.25 (DB and DBA). The Doppler beaming factors for main sequence and giant stars were computed using the ATLAS9 version, characterized by metallicities ranging from [-2.5, 0.2] solar abundances, with log g varying between 0 and 5.0 and effective temperatures between 3500 and 50 000 K. The adopted microturbulent velocity for these models was 2.0 km s-1. The limb-darkening coefficients were computed for three-dimensional DA and DB white dwarf models calculated with the CO5BOLD radiation-hydrodynamics code. The parameter range covered by the three-dimensional DA models spans log g values between 7.0 and 9.0 and Teff between 6000 and 15 000 K, while He/H = 0. The three-dimensional DB models cover a similar parameter range of log g between 7.5 and 9.0 and Teff between 12 000 and 34 000 K, while logH/He = -10.0. We adopted six laws for the computation of the limb-darkening coefficients: linear, quadratic, square root, logarithmic, power-2, and a general one with four coefficients. Conclusions. The beaming factor calculations, which use realistic models of stellar atmospheres, show that the black body approximation is not accurate, particularly for the filters u, u′, U, g, g′, and B. The black body approach is only valid for high effective temperatures and/or long effective wavelengths. Therefore, for more accurate analyses of light curves, we recommend the use of the beaming factors presented in this paper. Concerning limb-darkening, the distribution of specific intensities for 3D models indicates that, in general, these models are less bright toward the limb than their 1D counterparts, which implies steeper profiles. To describe these intensities better, we recommend the use of the four-term law (also for 1D models) given the level of precision that is being achieved with Earth-based instruments and space missions such as Kepler and TESS (and PLATO in the future). © ESO 2020., The Spanish MEC (ESP2017-87676-C5-2-R, PID2019-107061GB-C64, and PID2019-109522GB-C52) is gratefully acknowledged for its support during the development of this work. - Abstract

Context. The theoretical apsidal motion constants are key tools to investigate the stellar interiors in close eccentric binary systems. In addition, these constants and the moment of inertia are also important to investigate the tidal evolution of close binary stars as well as of exo-planetary systems. Aims. The aim of the paper is to present new evolutionary models, based on the MESA package, that include the internal structure constants (k2, k3, and k4), the radius of gyration, and the gravitational potential energy for configurations computed from the pre-main-sequence up to the first ascent giant branch or beyond. The calculations are available for the three metallicities [Fe/H] = 0.00,-0.50, and-1.00, which take the recent investigations in less metallic environments into account. This new set of models replaces the old ones, published about 15 years ago, using the code GRANADA. Methods. Core overshooting was taken into account using the mass-fov relationship, which was derived semi-empirically for models more massive than 1.2 M⊙. The differential equations governing the apsidal motion constants, moment of inertia, and the gravitational potential energy were integrated simultaneously through a fifth-order Runge-Kutta method with a tolerance level of 10-7. Results. The resulting models (from 0.8 up to 35.0 M⊙) are presented in 54 tables for the three metallicities, containing the usual characteristics of an evolutionary model (age, initial masses, log Teff, log g, and log L), the constants of internal structure (k2, k3, and k4), the radius of gyration β, and the factor α that is related with the gravitational potential energy. © 2019 ESO., The Spanish MEC (AYA2015-71718-R and ESP2017-87676-C5-2-R) is gratefully acknowledged for its support during the development of this work. Overshooting from the convective cores of stars more massive than about 1.2 M has a profound impact on their subsequent evolution. And yet, the formulation of the overshooting mechanism in current stellar evolution models has a free parameter (f in the diffusive approximation) that remains poorly constrained by observations, affecting the determination of astrophysically important quantities such as stellar ages. In an earlier series of papers, we assembled a sample of 37 well-measured detached eclipsing binaries to calibrate the dependence of on stellar mass, showing that it increases sharply up to a mass of roughly 2 M, and remains constant thereafter out to at least 4.4 M. Recent claims have challenged the utility of eclipsing binaries for this purpose, on the basis that the uncertainties in from the model fits are typically too large to be useful, casting doubt on a dependence of overshooting on mass. Here we reexamine those claims and show them to be too pessimistic, mainly because they did not account for all available constraints - both observational and theoretical - in assessing the true uncertainties. We also take the opportunity to add semiempirical determinations for 13 additional binaries to our previous sample, and to update the values for 9 others. All are consistent with and strengthen our previous conclusions, supporting a dependence of on mass that is now based on estimates for a total of 50 binary systems (100 stars).© 2019. - Abstract

Mostly multiband photometric transit observations have been used so far to retrieve broadband transmission spectra of transiting exoplanets in order to study their atmosphere. An alternative method has been proposed and has only been used once to recover transmission spectra using chromatic Rossiter-McLaughlin observations. Stellar activity has been shown to potentially imitate narrow and broadband features in the transmission spectra retrieved from multiband photometric observations; however, there has been no study regarding the influence of stellar activity on the retrieved transmission spectra through chromatic Rossiter-McLaughlin. In this study with the modified SOAP3.0 tool, we consider different types of stellar activity features (spots and plages), and we generated a large number of realistic chromatic Rossiter-McLaughlin curves for different types of planets and stars. We were then able to retrieve their transmission spectra to evaluate the impact of stellar activity on them. We find that chromatic Rossiter-McLaughlin observations are also not immune to stellar activity, which can mimic broadband features, such as Rayleigh scattering slope, in their retrieved transmission spectra. We also find that the influence is independent of the planet radius, orbital orientations, orbital period, and stellar rotation rate. However, more general simulations demonstrate that the probability of mimicking strong broadband features is lower than 25% and that can be mitigated by combining several Rossiter-McLaughlin observations obtained during several transits. © ESO 2020., M.O. acknowledges the support of the Deutsche Forschungs-gemeinschft (DFG) priority program SPP 1992 “Exploring the Diversity of Extrasolar Planets (RE 1664/17-1)”. Aims. One of the biggest problems we can encounter while dealing with the limb-darkening coefficients for stellar atmospheric models with spherical symmetry is the difficulty of adjusting both the limb and the central parts simultaneously. In particular, the regions near the drop-offs are not well reproduced for most models, depending on Teff, log g, or wavelength. Even if the law with four terms is used, these disagreements still persist. Here we introduce a new method that considerably improves the description of both the limb and the central parts and that will allow users to test models of stellar atmospheres with spherical symmetry more accurately in environments such as exoplanetary transits, eclipsing binaries, etc. Methods. The method introduced here is simple. Instead of considering all the μ points in the adjustment, as is traditional, we consider only the points until the drop-off (μcri) of each model. From this point, we impose a condition I(μ)=I(1) = 0. All calculations were performed by adopting the least-squares method. Results. The resulting coefficients using this new method reproduce the intensity distribution of the PHOENIX spherical models (COND and DRIFT) quite well for the photometric systems of the space missions TESS, Kepler, CoRoT, and MOST. The calculations cover the following ranges of local gravity and effective temperatures: 2.5 ≤ log g ≤ 6.0 and 1500 K ≤ T ≤ 12 000 K. The new spherical coefficients can easily be adapted to the most commonly used light curve synthesis codes.© 2018 The Author(s)., The Spanish MEC (AYA2015-71718-R and ESP2017-87676-C5-2-R) is gratefully acknowledged for its support during the development of this work.

Many current stellar evolution models assume some dependence of the strength of convective core overshooting on mass for stars more massive than 1.1-1.2 M, but the adopted shapes for that relation have remained somewhat arbitrary for lack of strong observational constraints. In previous work, we compared stellar evolution models to well-measured eclipsing binaries to show that, when overshooting is implemented as a diffusive process, the fitted free parameter f rises sharply up to about 2 M, and remains largely constant thereafter. Here, we analyze a new sample of eight binaries selected to be in the critical mass range below 2 M where f is changing the most, nearly doubling the number of individual stars in this regime. This interval is important because the precise way in which f changes determines the shape of isochrones in the turnoff region of ∼1-5 Gyr clusters, and can thus affect their inferred ages. It also has a significant influence on estimates of stellar properties for exoplanet hosts, on stellar population synthesis, and on the detailed modeling of interior stellar structures, including the calculation of oscillation frequencies that are observable with asteroseismic techniques. We find that the derived f values for our new sample are consistent with the trend defined by our earlier determinations, and strengthen the relation. This provides an opportunity for future series of models to test the new prescription, grounded on observations, against independent observations that may constrain overshooting in a different way. © 2018. As an exoplanet transits its host star, some of the light from the star is absorbed by the atoms and molecules in the planet's atmosphere, causing the planet to seem bigger; plotting the planet's observed size as a function of the wavelength of the light produces a transmission spectrum. Measuring the tiny variations in the transmission spectrum, together with atmospheric modelling, then gives clues to the properties of the exoplanet's atmosphere. Chemical species composed of light elements$-$such as hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, sodium and potassium$-$have in this way been detected in the atmospheres of several hot giant exoplanets, but molecules composed of heavier elements have thus far proved elusive. Nonetheless, it has been predicted that metal oxides such as titanium oxide (TiO) and vanadium oxide occur in the observable regions of the very hottest exoplanetary atmospheres, causing thermal inversions on the dayside. Here we report the detection of TiO in the atmosphere of the hot-Jupiter planet WASP-19b. Our combined spectrum, with its wide spectral coverage, reveals the presence of TiO (to a confidence level of 7.7{\sigma}), a strongly scattering haze (7.4{\sigma}) and sodium (3.4{\sigma}), and confirms the presence of water (7.9{\sigma}) in the atmosphere., Comment: Main article: 9 pages, 3 figures. We present 12,155 new differential photometric observations in the V filter made with the Undergraduate Research Studies in Astronomy and NF\Observatory WebScopes, as well as 33 radial velocities from spectroscopic observations of the detached, 4.04 day double-lined eclipsing binary star GX Gem. Absolute dimensions of the components are determined from these new, and also from previously published, data with high precision (less than 0.7% in the masses and radii) for the purpose of testing various aspects of theoretical modeling. We obtain 1.488 ? 0.011 solar masses and 2.327 ? 0.012 solar radii for the primary, and 1.467 ? 0.010 solar masses and 2.238 ? 0.012 solar radii for the secondary. The effective temperatures and interstellar reddening of the stars are accurately determined from the spectra, uvby?, and UBV photometry: 6195 ? 100 K for the primary, 6165 ? 100 K for the secondary, corresponding to spectral types of F7 and F7 V, and 0.068 mag for the color excess Eb ? y . Spectral line widths give rotational velocities that are synchronous with the mean orbital motion in a circular orbit. The components of GX Gem are relatively old main-sequence stars with an age of about 2.8 billion years according to models. Because the components are located right at the end of their main-sequence evolutionary paths, we can place good limits on the convective core overshooting parameter. The lowest value of ?ov consistent with the observations would appear to be approximately ?ov = 0.18. Two different theories of tidal synchronization and circularization agree that the components should be synchronously rotating, but disagree about whether or not the orbits should be circular.

This study seeks to determine the level of training that nurses working in the most important Spanish hospitals reached towards the year 1600 in the treatments applied to patients with STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), particularly syphilis. The nurses knew and already applied around 1600 a set of complex techniques to care for and heal the sick of syphilis and other STDs. All this demonstrates an increase in the demands of the training of Spanish nurses, who worked under ethical guidelines, and we could assume the beginnings of the professionalization of nursing in such an early age. In 16th century Spain, nurses began to raise their educational level to provide care that could respond to the new knowledge that medicine was discovering as a result of the general scientific development of the time, and that should be applied in the new hospitals that were erected in the main Spanish cities., El presente estudio tiene como objetivo principal conocer el nivel de preparación de los enfermeros que trabajaron en algunos de los más importantes hospitales españoles en torno al año 1600 en el tratamiento de las enfermedades de transmisión sexual, especialmente la sífilis.

When the people requiring the interven- tion of the notary are nurses or midwives, we have valuable information to learn about some of these anonymous professional, women and men who have not gone down in history for anything in particular, but who dedicated their lives to the nursing practice. With this data we can get to know some aspects that help us understand nursing and the specific nurses at a time, thus to continue wrapping the complex healthcare system of the old Spanish regime through the nursing professionals. This communication has as its main objec- tive that of showing the presence of lay nurses in Madrid in the seventeenth century, and by extension in other cities in Spain, by means of the documentation retained in the Archivo de Protocolos Notariales (Notarial Protocols Archive) of the city.
