Abstract

The EuPRAXIA EU project is at the forefront of advancing particle accelerator research and the development of photon sources through innovative plasma acceleration approaches. Within this framework, the EuAPS project aims to exploit laser wakefield acceleration to build and operate a betatron radiation source at the INFN Frascati National Laboratory. The EuAPS source will provide femtosecond X-ray pulses in the spectral region between about 1 and 10 keV, unlocking a realm of experimental ultrafast methodologies encompassing diverse imaging and X-ray spectroscopy techniques. This paper presents a description of the EuAPS betatron source, including simulations of the photon beam parameters, outlines the preliminary design of the dedicated photon beamline, and provides an insightful overview of its photon science applications.

Abstract

We report on the optical commissioning of the high power laser beam circulator for the high brightness Compton γ-ray source Extreme Light Infrastructure for Nuclear Physics. Tests aiming at demonstrating the optical performances of the laser beam circulator have been realized with a low-power pulsed laser-beam system and without electron beam. We show that, with the developed alignment and synchronization methods coming from the laser beam circulator design study presented in the Dupraz et al. paper [Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 17, 033501 (2014)], the laser beam circulator enhances the laser-beam power available at the interaction point by a factor in excess of 25. This corresponds to a potential of bringing the average laser-beam power in excess of 1 kW when the laser beam circulator is injected with the interaction point laser-beam pulse energy of 400 mJ at 100 Hz.

Abstract

rf photoguns find several types of applications as high brightness electron sources for free-electron lasers, energy recovery linacs, Compton and Thomson sources, and high-energy linear colliders. The high peak current and low transverse emittance of the generated beam are obtained with the combination of a high peak electric field (>100 MV/m) at the cathode surface, a proper choice of the solenoid field around, or immediately after, the gun, and special fabrication and treatments of the cathode itself. On the other hand, to increase the average electron current, a high repetition rate (>100 Hz) and/or a multibunch rf gun have to be developed. These types of devices are, in general, fabricated by brazing processes of copper machined parts. The brazing processes require a large vacuum furnace, are very expensive, and pose a not negligible risk of failure. A new fabrication technique for this type of structure has been recently developed and implemented at the Laboratories of Frascati of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN-LNF, Italy) and already applied to an rf gun now operating at a relatively low cathode peak field and low repetition rate [D. Alesini et al., Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 18, 092001 (2015)]. It is based on the use of special rf-vacuum gaskets that allow a brazing-free realization process. The S-band gun of the Extreme Light Infrastructure-Nuclear Physics Gamma Beam System, under construction in Magurele (Bucharest, Romania), has been realized with this new technique and represents a further and fundamental step toward the consolidation of this technology for high gradient particle accelerator fabrication. It operates at 100 Hz with a 120 MV/m cathode peak field and 1.5-μs-long rf pulses to house the 32 bunches necessary to reach the target gamma flux. High gradient tests, performed at full power and a full repetition rate, have shown the extremely good performances of the structure in terms of the breakdown rate and conditioning time and definitively demonstrated the reliability and suitability of such fabrication process for high gradient structure realization. In this paper, we report and discuss the electromagnetic and thermomechanical design, the realization process, and all the experimental results at low and high power at a full repetition rate.

Abstract

European physical journal special topics 229(24), 3675 - 4284 (2020). doi:10.1140/epjst/e2020-000127-8, This report presents the conceptual design of a new European research infrastructure EuPRAXIA. The concept has been established over the last four years in a unique collaboration of 41 laboratories within a Horizon 2020 design study funded by the European Union. EuPRAXIA is the first European project that develops a dedicated particle accelerator research infrastructure based on novel plasma acceleration concepts and laser technology. It focuses on the development of electron accelerators and underlying technologies, their user communities, and the exploitation of existing accelerator infrastructures in Europe. EuPRAXIA has involved, amongst others, the international laser community and industry to build links and bridges with accelerator science — through realising synergies, identifying disruptive ideas, innovating, and fostering knowledge exchange. The Eu-PRAXIA project aims at the construction of an innovative electron accelerator using laser- and electron-beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration that offers a significant reduction in size and possible savings in cost over current state-of-the-art radiofrequency-based accelerators. The foreseen electron energy range of one to five gigaelectronvolts (GeV) and its performance goals will enable versatile applications in various domains, e.g. as a compact free-electron laser (FEL), compact sources for medical imaging and positron generation, table-top test beams for particle detectors, as well as deeply penetrating X-ray and gamma-ray sources for material testing. EuPRAXIA is designed to be the required stepping stone to possible future plasma-based facilities, such as linear colliders at the high-energy physics (HEP) energy frontier. Consistent with a high-confidence approach, the project includes measures to retire risk by establishing scaled technology demonstrators. Abstract

We report on the optical commissioning of the high power laser beam circulator (LBC) for the high brightness Compton {\gamma}-ray source Extreme Light Infrastructure for Nuclear Physics. Tests aiming at demonstrating the optical performances of the LBC have been realized with a low-power pulsed laser-beam system and without electron beam. We show that, with the developed alignment and synchronization methods coming from the LBC design study presented in the Dupraz et al. paper [1], the LBC enhances the laser-beam power available at the interaction point (IP) by a factor in excess of 25. This corresponds to a potential of bringing the average laser-beam power in excess of 1 kW when the LBC is injected with the interaction point laser-beam pulse energy of 400 mJ at 100 Hz., Comment: 26 pages, 37 figures

Abstract

rf photoguns find several types of applications as high brightness electron sources for free-electron lasers, energy recovery linacs, Compton and Thomson sources, and high-energy linear colliders. The high peak current and low transverse emittance of the generated beam are obtained with the combination of a high peak electric field ($g100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{m}$) at the cathode surface, a proper choice of the solenoid field around, or immediately after, the gun, and special fabrication and treatments of the cathode itself. On the other hand, to increase the average electron current, a high repetition rate ($g100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Hz}$) and/or a multibunch rf gun have to be developed. These types of devices are, in general, fabricated by brazing processes of copper machined parts. The brazing processes require a large vacuum furnace, are very expensive, and pose a not negligible risk of failure. A new fabrication technique for this type of structure has been recently developed and implemented at the Laboratories of Frascati of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN-LNF, Italy) and already applied to an rf gun now operating at a relatively low cathode peak field and low repetition rate [D. Alesini et al., Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams 18, 092001 (2015)]. It is based on the use of special rf-vacuum gaskets that allow a brazing-free realization process. The $S$-band gun of the Extreme Light Infrastructure-Nuclear Physics Gamma Beam System, under construction in Magurele (Bucharest, Romania), has been realized with this new technique and represents a further and fundamental step toward the consolidation of this technology for high gradient particle accelerator fabrication. It operates at 100 Hz with a $120\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{m}$ cathode peak field and $1.5\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{s}$-long rf pulses to house the 32 bunches necessary to reach the target gamma flux. High gradient tests, performed at full power and a full repetition rate, have shown the extremely good performances of the structure in terms of the breakdown rate and conditioning time and definitively demonstrated the reliability and suitability of such fabrication process for high gradient structure realization. In this paper, we report and discuss the electromagnetic and thermomechanical design, the realization process, and all the experimental results at low and high power at a full repetition rate.

Abstract

The Gamma Beam System (GBS) is a high brightness LINAC to be installed in Magurele (Bucharest) at the new ELI-NP (Extreme Light Infrastructure — Nuclear Physics) laboratory. The accelerated electrons, with energies ranging from 280 to 720 MeV, will collide with a high power laser to produce tunable high energy photons (0.2–20 MeV ) with high intensity ( 1 0 13 photons/s), high brilliance and spectral purity ( 0 . 1 % BW), through the Compton backscattering process. This light source will be open to users for nuclear photonics and nuclear physics advanced experiments. Tested high level applications will play an important role in commissioning and operation. In this paper we report the progress and status of the development of dedicated high level applications. We also present the results of the test on the FERMI LINAC of the electron trajectory control method based on Dispersion Free Steering.
