Personal exposimeters are currently used in studies assessing human exposure to electromagnetic fields. These devices are usually carried by an individual, but vehicles such as bicycle or car are also used. The aim of the present study was to propose a personal exposimeter attached to a drone to perform environmental radio-frequency measurements. Trials were carried out to determine whether: (i) the wireless communication between the remote controller and the drone affects the downlink mobile telephony bands by a cross-talk effect, and (ii) the structure of the drone alters the measurements of the exposimeter compared to when the meter is on a tripod. To apply this system to a real scenario, a 3D representation of the electric field in a building was obtained, and the attenuation due to the building of radiation from outside was estimated. Measurements of the electromagnetic field with this system will make it possible to monitor without risk the emissions of antennas in their close vicinity, and to validate propagation models experimentally.

The correlation length $\xi$, a key quantity in glassy dynamics, can now be precisely measured for spin glasses both in experiments and in simulations. However, known analysis methods lead to discrepancies either for large external fields or close to the glass temperature. We solve this problem by introducing a scaling law that takes into account both the magnetic field and the time-dependent spin-glass correlation length. The Mpemba effect occurs when a hot system cools faster than an initially colder one, when both are refrigerated in the same thermal reservoir. Using the custom built supercomputer Janus II, we study the Mpemba effect in spin glasses and show that it is a non-equilibrium process, governed by the coherence length \xi of the system. The effect occurs when the bath temperature lies in the glassy phase, but it is not necessary for the thermal protocol to cross the critical temperature. In fact, the Mpemba effect follows from a strong relationship between the internal energy and \xi that turns out to be a sure-tell sign of being in the glassy phase. Thus, the Mpemba effect presents itself as an intriguing new avenue for the experimental study of the coherence length in supercooled liquids and other glass formers., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PNAS. 6 pages, 7 figures

We revisit the universal behavior of crystalline membranes at and below the crumpling transition, which pertains to the mechanical properties of important soft and hard matter materials, such as the cytoskeleton of red blood cells or graphene. Specifically, we perform large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of a triangulated two-dimensional phantom network which is freely fluctuating in three-dimensional space. We obtain a continuous crumpling transition characterized by critical exponents which we estimate accurately through the use of finite-size techniques. By controlling the scaling corrections, we additionally compute with high accuracy the asymptotic value of the Poisson ratio in the flat phase, thus characterizing the auxetic properties of this class of systems. We report on extensive numerical simulations of the three-dimensional Heisenberg model and its analysis through finite-size scaling of Lee-Yang zeros. Besides the critical regime, we also investigate scaling in the ferromagnetic phase. We show that, in this case of broken symmetry, the corrections to scaling contain information on the Goldstone modes. In this chapter we describe the Janus supercomputer, a massively parallel FPGA-based system optimized for the simulation of spin-glasses, theoretical models that describe the behavior of glassy materials. The custom architecture of Janus has been developed to meet the computational requirements of these models. Spin-glass simulations are performed using Monte Carlo methods that lead to algorithms characterized by (1) intrinsic parallelism allowing us to implement many Monte Carlo update engines within a single FPGA; (2) rather small data base (2 MByte) that can be stored on-chip, significantly boosting bandwidth and reducing latency. (3) need to generate a large number of good-quality long (≥ 32 bit) random numbers; (4) mostly integer arithmetic and bitwise logic operations. Careful tailoring of the architecture to the specific features of these algorithms has allowed us to embed up to 1024 special purpose cores within just one FPGA, so that simulations of systems that would take centuries on conventional architectures can be performed in just a few months.

We describe Janus, an application-driven architecture for Monte Carlo simulations of spin glasses. Janus is a massively parallel architecture, based on reconfigurable FPGA nodes; it offers two orders of magnitude better performance than commodity systems for spin glass applications. The first generation Janus machine has been operational since early 2008; we are currently developing a new generation, that will be on line in early 2013. In this paper we present the Janus architecture, describe both implementations and compare their performances with those of commodity systems.

Spin-glasses have become one of the most computing-demanding problems of the last 50 years in Statistical Physics. These extremely slow systems represent a clear example of an easy-to-describe but hard-to-simulate numerical problem. We have developed an FPGAs architecture, called Janus, able to exploit the simplicity of the problem by an extensive parallelization of the computing units. In this work we describe the architecture after motivating the problem. We give the performance figures compared with other more usual architectures. We have obtained a clear advantage in terms of computing power which produced several top results in the field. In addition, we describe the current development of the next generation of the infrastructure: Janus II.

We present a microcanonical Monte Carlo simulation of the site-diluted Potts model in three dimensions with eight internal states, partly carried out in the citizen supercomputer Ibercivis. Upon dilution, the pure model's first-order transition becomes of the second-order at a tricritical point. We compute accurately the critical exponents at the tricritical point. As expected from the Cardy-Jacobsen conjecture, they are compatible with their Random Field Ising Model counterpart. We study the 3D Disordered Potts Model with p=5 and p=6. Our numerical simulations (that severely slow down for increasing p) detect a very clear spin glass phase transition. We evaluate the critical exponents and the critical value of the temperature, and we use known results at lower $p$ values to discuss how they evolve for increasing p. In the literature, there are five distinct, fragmented sets of analytic predictions for the scaling behaviour at the phase transition in the random-site Ising model in four dimensions. Here, the scaling relations for logarithmic corrections are used to complete the scaling pictures for each set. A numerical approach is then used to confirm the leading scaling picture coming from these predictions and to discriminate between them at the level of logarithmic corrections.

A microcanonical finite-size ansatz in terms of quantities measurable in a finite lattice allows extending phenomenological renormalization (the so-called quotients method) to the microcanonical ensemble. The ansatz is tested numerically in two models where the canonical specific heat diverges at criticality, thus implying Fisher renormalization of the critical exponents: the three-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model and the two-dimensional four-state Potts model (where large logarithmic corrections are known to occur in the canonical ensemble). A recently proposed microcanonical cluster method allows simulating systems as large as L=1024 (Potts) or L=128 (Ising). The quotients method provides accurate determinations of the anomalous dimension, eta, and of the (Fisher-renormalized) thermal nu exponent. While in the Ising model the numerical agreement with our theoretical expectations is very good, in the Potts case, we need to carefully incorporate logarithmic corrections to the microcanonical ansatz in order to rationalize our data.

We perform numerical simulations, including parallel tempering, on the Potts glass model with binary random quenched couplings using the JANUS application-oriented computer. We find and characterize a glassy transition, estimating the location of the transition and the value of the critical exponents. We show that there is no ferromagnetic transition in a large temperature range around the glassy critical temperature. We study numerically the nonequilibrium dynamics of the Ising spin glass, for a time spanning 11 orders of magnitude, thus approaching the experimentally relevant scale (i.e., seconds). We introduce novel analysis techniques to compute the coherence length in a model-independent way. We present strong evidence for a replicon correlator and for overlap equivalence. The emerging picture is compatible with noncoarsening behavior.

We present the first detailed numerical study in three dimensions of a first-order phase transition that remains first-order in the presence of quenched disorder (specifically, the ferromagnetic/paramagnetic transition of the site-diluted four states Potts model). A tricritical point, which lies surprisingly near to the pure-system limit and is studied by means of Finite-Size Scaling, separates the first-order and second-order parts of the critical line. This investigation has been made possible by a new definition of the disorder average that avoids the diverging-variance probability distributions that plague the standard approach. Entropy, rather than free energy, is the basic object in this approach that exploits a recently introduced microcanonical Monte Carlo method., 4 pages, 4 color figures

We study the self-averaging properties of the three dimensional site diluted Heisenberg model. The Harris criterion \cite{critharris} states that disorder is irrelevant since the specific heat critical exponent of the pure model is negative. According with some analytical approaches \cite{harris}, this implies that the susceptibility should be self-averaging at the critical temperature ($R_\chi=0$). We have checked this theoretical prediction for a large range of dilution (including strong dilution) at critically and we have found that the introduction of scaling corrections is crucial in order to obtain self-averageness in this model. Finally we have computed critical exponents and cumulants which compare very well with those of the pure model supporting the Universality predicted by the Harris criterion., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, 14 tables. We use a high-precision Monte Carlo simulation to determine the universal specific-heat amplitude ratio A+/A- in the three-dimensional Ising model via the impact angle \phi of complex temperature zeros. We also measure the correlation-length critical exponent \nu from finite-size scaling, and the specific-heat exponent \alpha through hyperscaling. Extrapolations to the thermodynamic limit yield \phi = 59.2(1.0) degrees, A+/A- = 0.56(3), \nu = 0.63048(32) and \alpha = 0.1086(10). These results are compatible with some previous estimates from a variety of sources and rule out recently conjectured exact values., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

This paper describes JANUS, a modular massively parallel and reconfigurable FPGA-based computing system. Each JANUS module has a computational core and a host. The computational core is a 4x4 array of FPGA-based processing elements with nearest-neighbor data links. Processors are also directly connected to an I/O node attached to the JANUS host, a conventional PC. JANUS is tailored for, but not limited to, the requirements of a class of hard scientific applications characterized by regular code structure, unconventional data manipulation instructions and not too large data-base size. We discuss the architecture of this configurable machine, and focus on its use on Monte Carlo simulations of statistical mechanics. On this class of application JANUS achieves impressive performances: in some cases one JANUS processing element outperfoms high-end PCs by a factor ~ 1000.
