Computer Science - Computational Complexity - Abstract
The logical depth with significance $b$ of a finite binary string $x$ is the shortest running time of a binary program for $x$ that can be compressed by at most $b$ bits. There is another definition of logical depth. We give two theorems about the quantitative relation between these versions: the first theorem concerns a variation of a known fact with a new proof, the second theorem and its proof are new. We select the above version of logical depth and show the following. There is an infinite sequence of strings of increasing length such that for each $j$ there is a $b$ such that the logical depth of the $j$th string as a function of $j$ is incomputable (it rises faster than any computable function) but with $b$ replaced by $b+1$ the resuling function is computable. Hence the maximal gap between the logical depths resulting from incrementing appropriate $b$'s by 1 rises faster than any computable function. All functions mentioned are upper bounded by the Busy Beaver function. Since for every string its logical depth is nonincreasing in $b$, the minimal computation time of the shortest programs for the sequence of strings as a function of $j$ rises faster than any computable function but not so fast as the Busy Beaver function., Comment: 12 pages LaTex (this supercedes arXiv:1301.4451)

Computer Science - Computational Complexity - Abstract
For a finite binary string $x$ its logical depth $d$ for significance $b$ is the shortest running time of a program for $x$ of length $K(x)+b$. There is another definition of logical depth. We give a new proof that the two versions are close. There is an infinite sequence of strings of consecutive lengths such that for every string there is a $b$ such that incrementing $b$ by 1 makes the associated depths go from incomputable to computable. The maximal gap between depths resulting from incrementing appropriate $b$'s by 1 is incomputable. The size of this gap is upper bounded by the Busy Beaver function. Both the upper and the lower bound hold for the depth with significance 0. As a consequence, the minimal computation time of the associated shortest programs rises faster than any computable function but not so fast as the Busy Beaver function., Comment: 11 pages LaTeX; previous version was incorrect, this is a new version with almost the same results

Fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring, before and during labor, is a very important medical practice in the detection of fetuses in danger. We clustered FHR tracings by compression in order to identify abnormal ones. We use a recently introduced approach based on algorithmic information theory, a theoretical, rigorous and well-studied notion of information content in individual objects. The new method can mine patterns in completely different areas, there are no domain-specific parameters to set, and it does not require specific background knowledge. At the highest level the FHR tracings were clustered according to an unanticipated feature, namely the technology used in signal acquisition. At the lower levels all tracings with abnormal or suspicious patterns were clustered together, independent of the technology used. Moreover, FHR tracings with future poor neonatal outcomes were included in the cluster with other suspicious patterns., Comment: 5 pages, pdf, 1 figure, Proc. 19th IEEE Intn'l Symp. High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
The problem of three different masses bound by harmonic oscillator potentials is solved exactly. It is shown that Jacobi coordinates cannot, in general, decouple this system into two three-dimensional oscillators but this decoupling can always be obtained in terms of the normal coordinates. The condition for the decoupling in Jacobi coordinates is given. It is shown that the mean distance between each pair of particles depends upon their masses., Comment: 6 pages, latex, no figures

In Brazil, the production of KPC-type carbapenemases in Enterobacteriales is endemic, leading to widespread use of polymyxins. In the present study, 502 Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates were evaluated for resistance to polymyxins, their genetic determinants and clonality, in addition to the presence of carbapenem resistance genes and evaluation of antimicrobial resistance. Resistance to colistin (polymyxin E) was evaluated through initial selection on EMB agar containing 4% colistin sulfate, followed by Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) determination by broth microdilution. The susceptibility to 17 antimicrobials was assessed by disk diffusion. The presence of blaKPC, blaNDM and blaOXA-48-like carbapenemases was investigated by phenotypic methods and conventional PCR. Molecular typing was performed by PFGE and MLST. Allelic variants of the mcr gene were screened by PCR and chromosomal mutations in the pmrA, pmrB, phoP, phoQ and mgrB genes were investigated by sequencing. Our work showed a colistin resistance frequency of 29.5% (n = 148/502) in K. pneumoniae isolates. Colistin MICs from 4 to >128 µg/mL were identified (MIC50 = 64 µg/mL; MIC90 >128 µg/mL). All isolates were considered MDR, with the lowest resistance rates observed for amikacin (34.4%), and 19.6% of the isolates were resistant to all tested antimicrobials. The blaKPC gene was identified in 77% of the isolates, in consonance with the high rate of resistance to polymyxins related to its use as a therapeutic alternative. Through XbaI-PFGE, 51 pulsotypes were identified. MLST showed 21 STs, with ST437, ST258 and ST11 (CC11) being the most prevalent, and two new STs were determined: ST4868 and ST4869. The mcr-1 gene was identified in 3 K. pneumoniae isolates. Missense mutations in chromosomal genes were identified, as well as insertion sequences in mgrB. Furthermore, the identification of chromosomal mutations in K. pneumoniae isolates belonging from CC11 ensures its success as a high-risk epidemic clone in Brazil and worldwide.

Propagação Vegetativa ,Cultivar Camarosa ,Morango - Abstract
The production of strawberry seedlings in a soilless cultivation system can be an alternative for the production of seedlings of high physiological and sanitary quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the use of different nutrient solutions in mother plants on the production and quality of strawberry seedlings of the Aromas and Camarosa cultivars. The experiment was carried out in two crop cycles: the first cycle in 2016/2017, where four different nutrient solutions (1; 2; 3 and 4) were used for the nutrition of the parent plants of the cultivars under study and the second in 2017/2018, when the most productive solutions (nutrient solution 3 and 4) based on the results of the first cycle were used, together with the two cultivars. The propagules produced were collected, evaluated and rooted in substrate-filled trays, forming plant plugs, which were evaluated for quality. Nutritional solutions influence the propagative potential of the parent plants more than the physiological quality of the plug plant seedlings produced, when they are formed on substrates that provide nutrients. The nutrient solution 4 is the most recommended for the production of strawberry seedlings of the cultivars Aromas and Camarosa, in a soilless system. Cultivation of blackberry has gradually expanded in Brazil, due to their rusticity and low production cost; thus, it stands out as an excellent option for product diversification. There is a need to improve technical information on the management of this crop, especially mineral nutrition. Knowledge of the visual symptoms of nutritional deficiency and foliar contents of the nutrients allows helps farmers to choose the most adequate fertilization for plants. This study aimed at evaluating nutritional aspects and effects of nutrient omission on the growth of BRS Xingu blackberry. Treatments consisted of complete solutions and individual omission of the following nutrients: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (C), magnesium (Mg), boron (B), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe). The following variables were evaluated: leaf dry matter, root dry matter, total dry mass, macro- and micronutrients contents in leaves and visual symptoms of nutrient deficiency. Macronutrient and B deficiencies limit growth of blackberry omission led to the highest decrease in plant growth, besides leaf wrinkling, a fact that shows that BRS Xingu is susceptible to its deficiency. Correlation was found between N and Ca, N and P and B and Ca leaf contents. Low leaf contents of N, K, Ca and B were observed when these nutrients were omitted from the solution. SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being - Abstract
Copyright © 2021 Sociedade Portuguesa de Pneumologia. Published by Elsevier España, S.L.U. All rights reserved. INTRODUCTION: In Portugal, lung cancer (LC) is the first cause of cancer-related death and of death and disability combined. This study aims to analyze the overall survival (OS) and relative survival (RS) of patients diagnosed with LC in 2009-2011 by socio-demographic and tumor characteristics, and analyze sex-specific patterns. METHODS: We estimated 5-year OS using the Kaplan-Meier method and 5-year net survival through the RS framework. Cox regression modeling was used to determine the hazard ratio (HR) of death associated with each independent variable. FINDINGS: For the 11,523 cases analyzed, median 5-year OS was 264 days (95% confidence interval [CI]: 254.8-273.2), the cumulative OS was 13.6% and RS was 15.1%. Males had a lower median survival (237 days; 95% CI: 228.2-245.7) compared to females (416 days; 95% CI: 384.4-447.6) (p < 0.0001) and lower 5-year RS proportions (12.1% vs. 24.9%). RS progressively decreased with age (41.7% for age-group 50, histologic types (squamous cell carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer not otherwise specified, other unspecified and small cell lung cancer), and increasing stage. Compared to women, the risk of death in men was 37.7% higher (HR = 1.386; 95% CI: 1.295-1.484). CONCLUSIONS: The differences between OS and RS were small, reflecting the high lethality of LC. Male gender and older age are factors related to poor prognosis. Histology also plays a role in survival prognosis and varies with gender, but the factor related to the worst survival is stage. Although the study reflects data from a decade ago, and major changes occurred in diagnosis, staging and treatment, particularly for advanced disease, as LC mortality is strongly correlated with late stage diagnosis, all efforts should be made to secure early diagnosis and improve survival prospects. proof epub_ahead_of_print

A recent study published in eLife explores the role of individual species of bacteria and yeast in the microbiome of wild fruit flies. The researchers found that these microbes work together to provide the necessary nutrients for larval growth. By studying fruit flies, which have less complex microbiomes than humans, the researchers were able to identify specific microbial species that contribute to larval development. This research sheds light on the complex interactions between diet, microbes, and host microbiomes, and could have implications for manipulating microbiomes for various benefits, such as improving human health or altering the behavior of pollinating insects.
