Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic prolonged lockdowns, school closures requiring online education support, and uncertainty about examinations caused stress in students. Aim: To estimate the levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and fear of COVID-19 in adolescent students of Jamnagar and its relationship with possible predictors. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using a proportionate probability sampling method during the third wave of COVID-19 of 4423 adolescent students of Jamnagar, Gujarat. The Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) measured the main construct. T-tests for two independent samples and multiple linear regression analysis were used to assess the relationship. Results: Among the adolescent students, 14.81% had moderate fear, while severe fear was found in 3.37%. Moderate or severe depression was observed in 1.31% and 0.16% of students, respectively; severe and extremely severe anxiety was present in 0.65% and 0.11% of students; and stress was found to be moderate in 0.23%. Depression was associated with education, anxiety with education, gender, and a history of COVID-19 in the family and stress with a history of COVID-19 infection in the family and fear of COVID-19 with gender, standard of class, geographical area, socioeconomic class, and father’s education. Conclusion: In our study, the students having a higher fear of COVID-19 were found to have higher depression, anxiety, and stress. The factors associated with a lower level of psychological impact can be used to formulate the interventions needed for the betterment of adolescent mental health.

Background: The internet is a vital part of present-day society. Internet use for education has increased in recent years. During the COVID pandemic, schools were closed and education was delivered through online methods, which led to a further increase in internet use, especially in adolescents, leading to internet addiction in some. Aim: To estimate the prevalence of internet addiction and poor quality of sleep in adolescent students of Jamnagar. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out between January 2022 to March 2022 and included 1778 adolescent students of Jamnagar, Gujarat. The internet addiction test was used to measure the level of internet addiction, and the short Pittsburgh sleep quality index was used to measure the quality of sleep. Data analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, and multiple logistic regression techniques. Results: In our study, 17.8% of participants had mild internet addiction, 3.2% of participants had moderate-to-severe internet addiction, and 79% of participants were average internet users. Associated variables with internet addiction were male gender, residence at home, duration of internet usage in years, daily hours spent online, and monthly expenditure on internet recharge. Furthermore, 27.2% of participants had poor quality of sleep. Female gender, secondary school education, residence at the hostel, and internet addiction were predictors of poor quality of sleep. Conclusion: Students were found to have a high prevalence of internet addiction. The internet usage increased amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Internet addiction was significantly associated with poor quality of sleep in adolescents.

Background The paucity in round-the-clock availability of advanced tools like flexible bronchoscopes and video laryngoscopes makes it preferable to have alternative easily available gadgets for securing the airway in patients with cervical spine injuries where head and neck movements must be strictly avoided. This study compared the paraglossal technique of Miller blade insertion with the McCoy and Macintosh laryngoscope blades on the Cormack and Lehane grading (CLG) in patients with simulated restricted neck mobility.

The data provided is primary data related to cement production collected from the six different cement plants in India. This serves as the inventory for conducting material flow analysis, supply chain forecasting, and life cycle assessment of cement and concrete systems. The dataset is given in three data sheets with information relevant to the steps followed in line with the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology, i.e., inventory, characterization factors and impacts (here, carbon footprint and energy consumed). The data includes the amounts of raw materials (type and source), the electricity (source and amount) used in the clinker and other products produced, such as OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement), PPC (Portland Pozzolana Cement), PSC (Portland Slag Cement) and GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag). The data is presented (in Sheet A and C) for the relevant functional unit, i.e., one tonne of material produced in each plant. Sheet B gives one of its kind data related to electricity produced (1 kWh) in the thermal power plant associated with the cement plant, also called as captive power plant. As the cement production process contributes to 8% of the anthropogenic CO2 emissions, it is important to understand the environmental impacts associated with it, and primary data generated are essential for assessing the impacts and to modify the processes with higher contribution to reduce the impacts. This dataset can, therefore, serve as a basis to collect the data from similar plants in any part of the world and benchmarking.

Background The Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) infection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-Cov-2) has emerged as a recent pandemic, increasing the need for epidemiological studies and studies on public health. Only some studies have evaluated the awareness of medical undergraduates in India and other countries, leading to a lack of literature. Methods This study is a descriptive cross-sectional questionnaire-based study conducted in Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, India, between June to August 2020. An online survey using Google Forms was circulated among undergraduate medical students in India by a convenient sampling method for data collection. Descriptive analysis was derived based on frequencies and percentages, and the association with age, gender, and year of undergraduate training medical course was derived using the chi-square test. Results Altogether, 630 students from India responded to the survey, with a maximum response from students studying in the second year (38.7%). Nearly 63.85% of responders identified themselves as females. Knowledge regarding the human-to-human transmission of the virus, symptoms, complications, definition of “close contact, quarantine, and its indications was adequate among the students, with more than 70% correct responses. However, one-fourth of the students needed to gain more knowledge about masks. Respiratory hygiene was poor among 24.8%. Nearly 40% of students were unaware of the management of patients with COVID-19. Conclusion There is a need for regular quality training and institutional programs on infection control of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases across all Indian medical colleges to educate undergraduate medical students, who are future healthcare professionals, thus minimizing the risk of transmission and providing standardized care for patients.

Kidney organoids are an innovative tool in transplantation research. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether kidney organoids are susceptible for allo-immune attack and whether they can be used as a model to study allo-immunity in kidney transplantation. Human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived kidney organoids were co-cultured with human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), which resulted in invasion of allogeneic T-cells around nephron structures and macrophages in the stromal cell compartment of the organoids. This process was associated with the induction of fibrosis. Subcutaneous implantation of kidney organoids in immune-deficient mice followed by adoptive transfer of human PBMC led to the invasion of diverse T-cell subsets. Single cell transcriptomic analysis revealed that stromal cells in the organoids upregulated expression of immune response genes upon immune cell invasion. Moreover, immune regulatory PD-L1 protein was elevated in epithelial cells while genes related to nephron differentiation and function were downregulated. This study characterized the interaction between immune cells and kidney organoids, which will advance the use of kidney organoids for transplantation research.

An experiment was conducted during 2021-22 to evaluate the performance of early maturing high yielding sugarcane varieties at ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore. The experiment was planted in split plot design and replicated twice. Seven elite sugarcane genotypes Co 11015, Co 15005, Co 15006, Co 15007, Co 15009, Co 15010, Co 15021 were assessed agronomically with three standards checks i.e. Co 09004, Co 86032 and CoC 671 and two fertilizer levels i.e. 100 and 125 % RDF. The experiment was planted in wide row spacing (150 cm). The crop was harvested at 12th month and observation on NMC, cane height, cane girth, number of nodes, cane weight and cane yield per plot was recorded. Cane yield was influenced significantly due to different elite genotypes wherein, elite sugarcane genotypes, Co 15010 (139.79 t/ha) recorded significantly higher cane yield than the standards Co 86032 (114.85 t/ha), Co09004 (108.74 t/ha) and CoC 671(94.20 t/ha). Juice quality (Brix, sucrose, purity and CCS percent) were studied at harvest with random cane samples. Juice qualities were not influenced significantly due to fertilizer levels; however juice Brix, Sucrose%, Purity % and CCS % at harvest showed significant varietal differences.

In this work, limestone-calcined clay (LC2) is studied as an alternative supplementary cementitious material (SCM), combining two widely available resources – calcinated kaolinitic clay and limestone, to partially substitute portland clinker. The primary goal is to assess the potential of LC2 to produce moderate to high strength concretes with design compressive strengths of 20 to 50 MPa. For this purpose, 27 mixes with LC2 were prepared with a range of binder contents and water-binder ratios, and the performance was benchmarked against those of mixes having fly ash (PFA). In addition to the quantification of strength and concrete resistivity, life cycle assessment was performed for the concretes considering a typical situation in India. The efficiency of concretes made with LC2, PFA and ordinary portland cement (OPC) was analyzed using the energy intensity index (eics) and apathy index (A-index) as sustainability indicators. This framework establishes the sustainability potential of the LC2 with insights on the influence of strength on the indicators. It is concluded that the LC2 concretes with 45% replacement level, w/b≤0.45 and binder content lower than 400 kg/m3 possess the highest sustainability potential, among the concretes studied here.

Purpose Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy is often suspended because of immune-related enterocolitis (irEC). We examined the effect of resumption of ICIs with or without concurrent selective immunosuppressive therapy (SIT) on rates of symptom recurrence and survival outcomes.Methods This retrospective, multicenter study examined patients who were treated with ICI and developed irEC requiring SIT (infliximab or vedolizumab) for initial symptom control or to facilitate steroid tapering between May 2015 and June 2020. After symptom resolution, patients were restarted either on ICI alone or on concurrent ICI and SIT at the discretion of the treating physicians. The associations between irEC recurrence and treatment group were assessed via univariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression. Cox proportional hazards model was used for survival analysis.Results Of the 138 included patients who required SIT for initial irEC symptom control, 61 (44.2%) patients resumed ICI without concurrent SIT (control group) and 77 (55.8%) patients resumed ICI therapy with concurrent SIT: 33 with infliximab and 44 with vedolizumab. Background and Aims: The objective of this study was to analyze and review the clinical and histopathological aspects of oro-facial tuberculosis. Methods: Sixteen cases of oral mucosal biopsies diagnosed as granulomatous pathology consistent with tuberculosis were retrieved from the data base and clinical information and histopathological findings were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Of the total 16 cases, 12 were males while 4 were females. The age ranged from 15-70 years (mean of 39.6 years). Buccal mucosa, as an involved site, was seen in 31% of cases, while tonsil and soft palate constituted 3 cases each. Duration of symptoms ranged from 01-12 months (mean of 5.3 months). Oral examination revealed ulceroproliferative lesions in majority of the cases. Of sixteen cases, six cases (37.5%) each primarily as well as secondarily involved oral cavity while in 25% (4/16) of cases the status could not be evaluated. On histopathology, caseating granulomas were seen in 7 of 16 cases (43.75%) and non-caseating granulomas were seen in rest 56.25% of cases. Ziehl Neelsen stain for acid fast bacilli was positive in 31.25% (5/16) of cases. Conclusion: Though unusual, tuberculosis should always be included in the differentials of oral lesions in a country endemic to tuberculosis like India. Histopathological evaluation of the biopsy remains the indispensible tool to diagnose oro-facial tuberculosis.

Abstract Background Being a successful peer-led team learning (PLTL) workshop leader involves developing content knowledge and workshop facilitation skills. These skills connected to being a peer leader, however, do not terminate at the end of one’s undergraduate program. In fact, many former peer leaders denote having been a peer leader on their LinkedIn profile. This study examines the transferable skills that former peer leaders identified as being valuable in their current positions. We conducted semi-structured interviews with former peer leaders from varying disciplines, universities, ages, and years since being a peer leader. Results Interview questions captured leadership experiences including successes and challenges of being peer leaders, roles and responsibilities, and specific transferable skills further developed by being peer leaders and how they are being utilized in the leaders’ current position. Conclusion Thematic analyses of these interviews indicate that former peer leaders recognize leadership skills, coping with many challenges (including not having the right answer), collaboration/teamwork skills, self-confidence, and problem-solving skills as being relevant and frequently used in their current work.

Introduction: The ability of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 to selectively target high-income countries, has puzzled many epidemiologists. Several possible protective factors such as Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) vaccine coverage, higher environmental temperature, higher proportion of the younger population, prevalence of hypertension (HTN), diabetes, and smoking have been suggested. This study aims at understanding the influence of each of these factors on case fatality rate due to COVID-19. Methods: We selected two or more countries in each geographical region, which were severely affected by SARS-CoV-2 infections. Case fatality rate for each country was calculated obtaining data on the number of cases and deaths in each country. The details of coverage of BCG vaccination, prevalence of HTN and diabetes, age structure of the population, and average maximum and minimum temperatures during February and March months of 2020, and prevalence of smoking for each country were taken from the World Health Organization and other standard databases till May 9, 2020. Statistical analysis was done using Karl Pearson's correlation and multiple linear regression model. Results: Case fatality rate was negatively correlated with BCG coverage of the country, percentage of population below 14 years age and average maximum temperatures. Conclusions: Environmental temperature, wider BCG coverage, and higher proportion of the younger population in middle- and low-income countries might have played a protective role against COVID-19.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic trematode that is less commonly seen in India. The clinical manifestations range from acute, sub acute and chronic phases. A granulomatous type of lesion formed by Schistosoma hematobium in the lower urinary tract. We present a case of rare neglected tropical infection in this part of Dakshin Kannada. A 66-year-old man presents with history of irritative voiding symptoms, urgency, incontinence, and nocturia of 2 months duration. CT Urogram showed bladder wall thickening. Cystoscopy showed granuloma in the posterolateral wall of the bladder. Urine microscopy picked up Schistosoma hematobium eggs. Bladder biopsy showed chronic inflammatory type of lesion. This is a case of confirmed chronic granulomatous urinary schistosomiasis in a non-endemic region, and successfully treated. Clinicians should become aware of the existence of this parasite in few pockets in India.

Background Immune-mediated diarrhea and colitis (IMDC) is currently diagnosed and monitored by evaluating clinical symptoms. Deep remission is determined by endoscopic and histologic evaluation of the disease process. However, repeating these invasive procedures frequently can become cumbersome. We sought to assess the role of fecal calprotectin (FC) concentration as a non-invasive biomarker of endoscopic or histologic remission.Methods We performed a retrospective study of patients with IMDC who were tested for FC at IMDC onset and after IMDC treatment between June 2016 and March 2020. Patient demographics, clinical variables, and FC data were collected and analyzed to determine the optimal cut-off FC concentration to predict endoscopic and histologic remission.Results Our sample comprised 77 patients with a median age of 62 years; 66% were male and 94% were Caucasian. Sixty-five patients (84%) achieved clinical remission, 46 (60%) achieved endoscopic remission, and 24 (31%) achieved histologic remission after IMDC treatment. This study explores whether integrating multicultural content within a genetics laboratory course affected students’ awareness of diversity and their perceptions of scientists’ identities. Genetics laboratory curricula typically focus on content and experimental procedures, with cursory references to the scientists who made these discoveries. The resulting poor racial and gender representation in the curricula propagate biases about the abilities and contributions of scientists from underrepresented groups, which may adversely affect the retention and success of students in these groups. Initially, students completed a pre-test in which they were asked to recall the names of geneticists and their scientific contributions. Later students created a mock magazine issue featuring a diverse set of experts in genetics, specifically members of traditionally underrepresented gender/sexuality and/or racial/ethnic groups. To facilitate this assignment, students were randomly assigned a geneticist from a pool of active research scientists, spanning a wide range of scientific and cultural backgrounds and identities. Each student wrote a 500-word biography of their assigned geneticist and read biographies composed by peers. Then, in groups, the students categorized biographies based on student-selected unifying themes into a table of contents. On the final exam, the pre-test was repeated as a post-test. In the pre-test, scientists listed by students were 94% male and 6% female, with no members of other underrepresented groups included. In the post-test, scientists listed by students shifted to 84% male and 16% female with 18% from underrepresented groups. These data suggest that this intervention increases awareness of the multicultural nature of scientists.

Sporadic adrenal medullary hyperplasia (AMH) is a rare entity and mimics pheochromocytoma clinically as well as pharmacologically. It is characterized by increase in adrenal medullary cells with the expansion of cells into areas normally not seen. A 59-year-old male presented with chronic hypertension and raised 24-h urinary normetanephrine levels. Radiological and clinical possibility of pheochromocytoma led to left transperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Histopathology, however, showed increase in adrenal medullary to cortical ratio, further confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The absence of any well-defined lesion led to the diagnosis of AMH. Furthermore, on routine imaging, two asymptomatic cavernous hemangiomas were seen. We present this case to reiterate that AMH is an entity which should be considered as a differential for pheochromocytoma. Furthermore, the presence of asymptomatic cavernous hemangiomas in the cerebrum, in this case, makes it rarer since this sporadic association is seldom seen.

Dentistry today has inherited technological advancement from other Dental Material sciences, examples are Nanocomposite and Giomers. Nanocomposites and Giomers are common materials used in Dentistry. But what are the implications when these materials are used in practice? The aim for this the study shows the analysis of tissue reaction due to implantation of Nanocomposite and Giomers. The subcutaneous tissue of a mouse is substituted with the human gum tissues. In the experimental group, Nanocomposite and Giomers were implanted in the subcutaneous tissue abdomen region in mice. The slides were made from the surrounding of implantation for both experimental and control groups. The evaluation of the effects of the implant is done in a time interval. Evaluated time intervals are 24 hours, 7" day, 14th day, 21st day and 28th day respectively. The amounts of inflammatory cells formation in both groups were compared.Once the results of the inflammatory cells are evaluated in the given time interval for Nanocomposite, Giomer, and control group then they are statistically analyzed. The statistics used in the experiments is Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon. The conclusion of this research showed that statistically significant differences on lymphocytes value between treatment and control group.

ObjectiveTo describe the early activities and lessons of the Share, Trust, Organize, Partner COVID-19 California Alliance (STOP COVID-19 CA), the California awardee of the NIH-funded multi-state Community Engagement Alliance (CEAL) against COVID-19. The Alliance was established to ensure equity in Coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19) research, clinical practice, and public health for communities most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.Study settingThe STOP COVID-19 CA Alliance network of 11 universities and affiliated partner community-based organizations (CBOs) across California.Study designMixed methods evaluation consisting of an analysis of activity (August 2020 to December 2021) detailed in reports submitted by community-academic teams and a survey (August 2021) of academic investigators and affiliated community-based organization (CBO) partners.Data collectionWe summarized activities from the 11 community-academic teams' progress reports and described results from an online survey of academic investigators and CBO partners in the California Alliance.Principal findingsA review of progress reports (n = 256) showed that teams fielded surveys to 11,000 Californians, conducted 133 focus groups, partnered with 29 vaccine/therapeutics clinical trials, and led more than 300 town halls and vaccine events that reached Californians from communities disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Survey responses from academic investigators and CBO partners emphasized the importance of learning from the successes and challenges of the California Alliance teams' COVID-19 initiatives. Both academic and CBO respondents highlighted the need for streamlined federal and institutional administrative policies, and fiscal practices to promote more effective and timely operations of teams in their efforts to address the numerous underlying health and social disparities that predispose their communities to higher rates of, and poor outcomes from, COVID-19.ConclusionsSTOP COVID-19 CA represents a new and potentially sustainable statewide community engagement model for addressing health disparities in multiethnic/multicultural and geographically dispersed communities.
