Abstract

A preliminary design of a compact first-level calorimeter trigger, implemented as a farm of local bit-serial systolic arrays, is presented. The bit-serial data representation allows higher processing rates and more compact designs than are possible when using parallel data. More functionality can be incorporated into the Application Specific Integra-ted Circuits (ASICs) that serve as the main processing elements. The trigger processor seeks local energy clusters, evaluates isolation criteria within the electromagnetic calorimeter and leakage into the hadron calorimeter in order to detect electrons. It uses cluster finding algorithms to identify jets and missing transverse energy to estimate neutrino energies. The processor output serves as decision support for the central first-level trigger and delivers region-of-interest positions to the second-level trigger. In its present form the trigger processor design relies on optical fibers to deliver the input data from the front-end modules and multi-chip modules (MCMs) to harbor the processing ASICs. The fact that the main part of the trigger processor can fit into one or two large crates suggests that the design is not limited by size nor is it strictly limited by cost but can be expanded to accommodate extended algorithms if these are found necessary. Extensive physics simulations will explore these possibilities.

Abstract

A novel data acquisition model, the Front End Readout MIcrosystem (FERMI), finds application in high energy physics by enabling temporary calorimetric data storage. Digital filters help process the stored data, which is then monitored by a first-level trigger processor. Only the essential data is retained by the FERMI module, which is capable of serving nine channels simultaneously.

Abstract

We present a digital solution to the front-end electronics for calorimetric detectors at future supercolliders based on high speed A/D converters, a fully programmable pipeline/digital filter chain and local intelligence. Questions of error correction, fault-tolerance and system redundancy are also considered. A system integration of a multichannel device in a multichip, Silicon-on-Silicon Microsystem hybrid will be used. This solution allows a new level of integration of complex analog and digital functions, with an excellent flexibility in mixing technologies for the different functional blocks. This type of VLSI multichip integration allows a high degree of programmability at both the function and the system level, and offers the possibility of customizing the microsystem with detector-specific functions.

Abstract

We describe the design of a digital calorimeter trigger processor system which could form a major part of the ATLAS level-1 trigger system. Utilising novel techniques, but with today’s technologies, the system can be contained within six electronics crates and will provide the central trigger logic with signals from events with high-pT electrons, photons, jets and missing ET. Communication with the trigger digitisation system will employ commercial high-speed optical links, terminating in multi-chip modules (MCMs) incorporating custom-designed integrated optics. Simulation studies combined with an extensive demonstrator programme have been used to develop flexible digital algorithms with programmable parameters for bunch-crossing identification and electromagnetic cluster-finding. These algorithms will be embedded in semi-custom application-specific integrated circuits, of which five types will be designed. Inter-crate data fan-out will be achieved by means of optical splitters, while communication within crates will use transmission-line backplanes. The remaining technical issues will be studied in the final phase of the current R&D demonstrator programme. A parallel demonstrator programme is also under way to study alternative techniques with the potential for future system enhancement.

Abstract

This note describes a first-level calorimeter trigger processor designed to take advantage of new possibilities that arise as a consequence of modern design techniques and components such as optical interconnections, application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and multi-chip modules (MCMs). The design is homogeneous down to the trigger cell level. This means that no boundary effects occur due to the system partitioning. The construction presented relies mainly on two different types of highly complex ASICs for processing and an MCM for opto-electrical conversion of input data. The trigger processor performs electron/photon identification, jet detection and missing ET calculations for the central first-level trigger and region of interest (RoI) selection for the second-level trigger. Exploring the possibilities given by advanced technologies leads to a first-level trigger architecture with advantages over more traditional designs, allowing, for example, higher precision calculations. Remaining degrees of freedom can be used to enhance the ambition level of the trigger design A demonstrator programme intended to verify the system performance has been funded and is under development with the aim to manufacture modules and start tests of these during 1995. Depending on the outcome of these tests, the trigger design presented in the ATLAS technical proposal may be modified to benefit from improved performance and/or reduced cost.

Abstract

We propose to carry out a broad-based programme of R&D on level-1 trigger systems for LHC experiments. We will consider the overall level-1 which coordinates different subtriggers and which interacts with the front end electronics and with the level-2 system. Careful attention will be paid to systems aspects and problems of synchronization within the pipelined processor system. Trigger algorithms for selecting events with high-pt electrons, photons, muons, jets and large missing Et will be evaluated by physics simulation studies. We will study possible implementations of such trigger algorithms in fast electronics by making conceptual design studies and using behavioural simulation models. For critical areas more detailed design studies will be made, and prototypes of some key elements will be constructed and tested. The proposed R&D project builds on existing studies and will complement other R&D projects already funded by the DRDC.

Abstract

We propose a digital approach to the front-end electronic chain for calorimetric detectors based on high speed A to D converters, a fully programmable pipeline/digital filter chain and local intelligence. Abstract

Goals Of Work: Staff members in palliative home care play an important role in supporting bereaved family members. The aim of this study was to explore staff members' perspectives on providing such support.Material and Methods: Staff members in six units responded (n=120; response rate 58%) to a postal questionnaire with Likert-type and open-ended questions. The responses were analyzed using statistics and manifest content analysis.Main Results: None of the respondents stated that bereavement follow-up was "most often difficult," 23% "most often rather difficult," 52.5% "most often rather easy," and 12.5% "most often easy." Apart from a tendency for age to be linked to perceived difficulty, there were no apparent patterns. Bereavement follow-up was a positive opportunity to support the family member's coping with their bereavement and to get feedback on the palliative care provided. Critical aspects concerned the question of whose needs actually were being met at bereavement follow-up, i.e., the staff members' needs for getting feedback on the care provided versus the risk of burdening the family members' by reminding them of the deceased's dying trajectory. Aspects that negatively influenced the staff members' experiences were complex and related, e.g., to the family member's dissatisfaction with the care provided, to the staff member's perceived lack of competence, and to the staff member's relationship to the family member.Conclusions: Bereavement follow-up was perceived as a rewarding conclusion to the relationship with the family member. The findings suggest that meaning-based coping might be an appropriate framework when understanding staff members' experiences with providing bereavement follow-up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
