International audience; Aims. Invasive species, which recently expanded, may help understand how climatic niche can shift at the time scale of the current global change. Here, we address the climatic niche shift of an invasive shrub (common gorse, Ulex europaeus) at the world and regional scales to assess how it could contribute to increasing invasibility. Methods. Based on a 28,187 occurrences database, we used a combination of 9 species distribution models (SDM) to assess regional climatic niche from both the native range (Western Europe) and the introduced range in different parts of the world (North-West America, South America, North Europe, Australia and New Zealand). Important Findings. Despite being restricted to annual mean temperature between 4 and 22 °C, as well as annual precipitation higher than 300 mm / yr, the range of bioclimatic conditions suitable for gorse was very large. Based on a native vs introduced SDM comparison, we highlighted a niche expansion in North-West America, South America and to a lesser degree in Australia, while a niche displacement was assessed in North Europe. These niche changes induced an increase in potential occupied areas by gorse by 49, 111, 202 and 283% in Australia, North Europe, North-West America and South America, respectively. On the contrary, we found no evidence of niche change in New Zealand, which presents similar climatic condition to the native environment (Western Europe). This study highlights how niche expansion and displacement of gorse might increase invasibility at regional scale. The change in gorse niche toward new climatic conditions may result from adaptive plasticity or genetic evolution and may explain why it has such a high level of invasibility. Taking into account the possibility of a niche shift is crucial to improve invasive plants management and control.; Objectifs : Les espèces envahissantes peuvent aider à comprendre comment la niche climatique peut évoluer à une échelle temporelle de l'ordre de celle du changement global en cours. Ici, nous abordons le changement de niche climatique d'un arbuste envahissant (l'ajonc Ulex europaeus) à l'échelle mondiale et régionale.Méthodes : Sur la base d'une base de données de 28 187 occurrences, nous avons utilisé une combinaison de 9 modèles de distribution d'espèces (SDM) pour évaluer la niche climatique régionale de la zone native native (Europe occidentale) et des zones introduites (Amérique du Nord-Ouest, Amérique du Sud, Europe du Nord, Australie et Nouvelle-Zélande).Principaux résultats : La gamme des conditions bioclimatiques adaptées aux ajoncs est très large, bien qu'elle soit limitée par une température annuelle moyenne comprise entre 4 et 22 °C, et des précipitations annuelles supérieures à 300 mm an. Nous avons mis en évidence plusieurs changemenbts de niche : une expansion de niche en Amérique du Nord-Ouest, en Amérique du Sud et dans une moindre mesure en Australie, un déplacement de niche en Europe du Nord. Ces changements de niche ont entraîné une augmentation de 49, 111, 202 et 283 % des zones potentiellement colonisables par l'ajonc en Australie, Europe du Nord, Amérique du Nord et Amérique du Sud, respectivement. Nous n'avons trouvé aucun indice de changement de niche en Nouvelle-Zélande, pays qui présente des conditions climatiques similaires à celles de la zone native. Le changement de niche des ajoncs vers de nouvelles conditions climatiques peut résulter de la plasticité adaptative ou de l'évolution génétique de l'espèce, et contribue à expliquer pourquoi elle est si invasive.

In vitro cultivation systems of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are useful tools to study the interaction between plants and their fungal symbiont, and also to develop new biotechnologies. Plantlets of the latex-producing species Hevea brasiliensis clone PB 260 were grown in a dense extraradical mycelium network of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis MUCL 41833 developed from a mycelium donor plant (Medicago truncatula A17). The factors indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), 2-morpholineoethanesulfonic acid monohydrate (MES) buffer, and carbon dioxide (CO2) were tested on root development and colonization by the fungus. No colonization was observed in the presence of plantlets pre-treated with IBA. The highest levels of root colonization were obtained when plantlets were mycorrhized under a high CO2 concentration (1,000 μmol mol−1) with MES (10 mM) added to the growth medium. Widespread root colonization (with presence of arbuscules, intraradical mycelium, and spores/vesicles) was predominantly observed in newly produced roots. Therefore, it appears essential to improve root initiation and growth for improving in vitro mycorrhization of H. brasiliensis. We demonstrated the potential of the “mycelium donor plant” in vitro culture system to produce colonized H. brasiliensis plantlets before their transfer to ex vitro conditions.

However, there are only few records of wood fall mats, even though the presence of hydrogen sulfide at the wood surface should create a perfect niche for sulfide-oxidizing bacteria. Here we report the growth of microbial mats on wood incubated under conditions that simulate the Mediterranean deep-sea temperature and darkness. We used amplicon and metagenomic sequencing combined with fluorescence in situ hybridization to test whether a microbial succession occurs during mat formation and whether the wood fall mats present chemosynthetic features. We show that the wood surface was first colonized by sulfide-oxidizing bacteria belonging to the Arcobacter genus after only 30 days of immersion. Subsequently, the number of sulfate reducers increased and the dominant Arcobacter phylotype changed. The ecological succession was reflected by a change in the metabolic potential of the community from chemolithoheterotrophs to potential chemolithoautotrophs. Our work provides clear evidence for the chemosynthetic nature of wood fall ecosystems and demonstrates the utility to develop experimental incubation in the laboratory to study deep-sea chemosynthetic mats.

Australian bipinnate acacias, known locally as mimosa, are widespread on the plateaus and mountains of Madagascar. Rarely, however, do these trees attain their full size, leading to a surprising landscape of ‘scrubby’ wattles. We review the introduction of the wattles, survey their multiple uses in rural livelihoods and environmental management, and analyze the forestry policies, tenure rules, and ecological factors that maintain the trees' scrubby state. This well-adapted plant is an important resource for farmers and serves to green treeless hills, but it may become a conundrum to conservation managers due to its non-native, invasive status.

Introduction. Les Tephritidae ont une importance economique majeure dans les regions tropicales. Au Benin, nous n'avions que tres peu d'informations disponibles sur les especes de mouches des fruits infeodees au manguier si ce n'est la manifestation de leurs degâts. Nous avons donc effectue des observations preliminaires dans le Nord du Benin durant la campagne de mangues en 2005 afin d'identifier les especes en cause, de suivre leurs fluctuations de populations et d'estimer les pertes qui leur sont imputables. Materiel et methodes. Ces experimentations ont ete effectuees dans la region de Parakou (departement du Borgou). Les populations mâles de Tephritidae ont ete suivies toutes les semaines dans deux types de vergers de manguiers grâce a des pieges a parapheromones. Les fruits de 17 cultivars de manguiers ont ete echantillonnes d'avril a juin 2005; ils ont ete ensuite rapportes au laboratoire pour l'identification des especes de mouches responsables des infestations lors de l'emergence des adultes. Pour evaluer les pertes, un echantillonnage de fruits appartenant a differents cultivars a ete realise dans les memes vergers. Les fruits infestes ont ete comptabilises et elimines; les fruits potentiellement infestes ont ete disseques. Resultats et discussion. Parmi huit especes de mouches des fruits issues des mangues au Benin, quatre peuvent etre considerees comme ayant une importance economique: Ceratitis cosyra, C. quinaria, C. silvestrii et Bactrocera invadens. Pendant la saison seche, C. cosyra a ete la plus abondante tandis que B. invadens a ete largement dominante des le debut de la saison des pluies, en correlation avec les stades de pre-maturite et maturite des fruits. Ainsi, a partir de la mi-mai, B. invadens a ete de plus en plus abondante par rapport a C. cosyra dans les pieges de detection et parmi les adultes emergeant des mangues infestees. Les degâts fluctuent en moyenne de 12% en debut avril a 50% en juin, toutes especes de Tephritidae confondues. Conclusions. La plupart des especes de Tephritidae trouvees sur mangues au cours de nos experimentations avaient deja ete observees precedemment dans d'autres pays ouest-africains a l'exception de B. invadens, espece invasive nouvellement decrite. Des etudes ecologiques et de comportement seront necessaires afin de planifier et d'appliquer des methodes de lutte optimales vis-a-vis de ce nouveau ravageur d'importance economique majeure en Afrique de l'Ouest. We have isolated 17 strains of rhizobiums from nodules collected on roots of Pterocarpus officinalis in different sites of swamp forest in Guadeloupe and Martinique. The genotypic diversity of these strains were characterized by PCR-RFLP analysis of the IGS (inter-genic spacer) region between 16S and 23S rRNA genes, by using two 4-base restriction endonucleases Hae III and Msp I. Results of IGS PCR-RFLP analysis showed that restriction patterns were similar for DNA extract from root nodules and cultures of rhizobium strains. The diversity of these strains varied from one site to another. They were grouped into 5 ribotypes by IGS PCR-RFLP analysis. Results of IGS sequence analysis showed that the 5 ribotypes are very close to the genus Bradyrhizobium. The symbiotic properties of the 5 ribotypes were evaluated on Acacia seyal , a plant test that is able to form nodules with several Bradyrhizobium species. One month and nineteen days after inoculation, the green colour of the leaves and the best growth of inoculated seedlings contrasting with the yellow colour of the leaves and the lowest growth of uninoculated seedlings, were the parameters indicating the level of nitrogen-fixing activity of the three Bradyrhizobium strains. Concurrently, the vesicular and arbuscular mycorrhizal status of P. officinalis was established. The two types of symbiotic microorganisms could contribute to mobilize available phosphorus and nitrogen for improving the growth of P. officinalis in degraded swamp forests., Nous avons isolé 17 souches de rhizobiums à partir de nodules récoltés sur des racines de Pterocarpus officinalis dans différents sites de forêt marécageuse en Guadeloupe et Martinique. La diversité de ces souches a été caractérisée par PCR-RFLP de l’intergène IGS situé entre les gènes nucléaires codant pour les ARNr 16S et 23S en utilisant deux enzymes de restriction Hae III et Msp I. Des profils RFLP obtenus par digestion de l’IGS d’extraits d’ADN de nodules ou de cultures bactériennes sont comparables. L’analyse de ces profils RFLP a révélé une hétérogénéité génétique des souches qui varie suivant les sites. Les 17 souches de P. officinalis ont été groupées en 5 ribotypes par comparaison de leur profil RFLP. L’analyse phylogénétique de l’IGS a montré que ces ribotypes sont très proches du genre Bradyrhizobium. Les propriétés symbiotiques d’un représentant de chaque groupe de souches ont été testées sur Acacia seyal , espèce qui nodule avec un grand nombre d’espèces de Bradyrhizobium. Un mois et dix neuf jours après inoculation, l’observation de la vigueur et de la couleur verte des parties aériennes des plantes inoculées, comparativement aux plantes témoins peu vigoureuses et de couleur jaune, ont été des paramètres indiquant le caractère fixateur de trois souches de Bradyrhizobium. Parallèlement, la présence de champignons mycorhiziens à vésicules et à arbuscules a été révélée sur des racines de P. officinalis. Ces deux types de symbiose pourraient agir en synergie sur la mobilisation du phosphore et de l’azote pour améliorer la croissance de P. officinalis dans des forêts marécageuses dégradées., Bâ Amadou M.,Samba R.,Sylla S. A flowing solution culture technique was used to study the effects of N nutrition on banane root infestation by the burrowing nematode #Radopholus similis#. Paired groups of banana plants were grown in separate compartments containing coarse sand (2-5 mm diameter). Input nutrient solutions had fixed compositions and identical total N concentrations. The two compartments differed in their NH4+/total N concentrations, one receiving 0% NH4+/total N (100% NO3-/total N) and the other 60% NH4+/total N (40% NO3-/total N). The compartments were connected by a inverted T-shaped tube containing fine sand (200-250 um diameter) through which nematodes were inoculated. The pH and N concentrations of the output solution were determined at regular intervals. The pH of the output solution differed markedly between the two compartments, with values of 6 8 and 3 6 in the 0% and 60% NH4+ compartments, respectively. In the compartment receiving 0% NH4+, the number of nematodes in the roots and the growth of banane plants was significantly higher than in the compartment receiving 60% NH4+. Even though they were more infested by nematodes, banane plants receiving 100% NO3- developed better than the less infested plants grown in the medium containing 40% NO3-.

Ectomycorrhizal fungal community is largely integrated into the overall diversity and ecosystem processes. This study aims to determine the below-ground structure of ectomycorrhizal fungi community associated with Uapaca bojeri and Sarcolaena oblongifolia in highland sclerophyllous forest of Madagascar and to assess the impact of shared ectomycorrhizal symbiont on tree seedling recruitment and plant succession facilitation. Ectomycorrhizal fungi were identified based on morphotyping and RFLP analysis of rDNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS)-large subunit followed by sequence analysis of each RFLP pattern. Impacts of shared ectomycorrhizal symbionts on seedling development of U. bojeri were investigated in soil microcosm collected at different distances from naturally established of both host plant species. The ECM fungal communities associated with both plants showed high similarity and were dominated by the genus Russula. Expressed as RFLP types, 21 taxa of ECM fungi were collected from root tips. More than half of these ECM taxa were shared between the two plant species. The better development of U. bojeri seedling was observed in soil samples naturally influenced by S. oblongifolia and located between 5 and 10 m from established U. bojeri where seedlings were colonized particularly by shared ectomycorrhizal symbionts. This study demonstrates that natural establishment of secondary colonizing hosts may contribute to tree seedling recruitment and development by providing compatible ectomycorrhizal symbionts.

Adansonia madagascariensis fruits were found in May 2011 on the beach of Anjiabe in the north of Madagascar. Marks found on the fruits and the absence of this species on this coast indicated that the fruits had been in the sea for a long time. The viability of seeds contained in these fruits was assessed and compared to the viability of seeds collected from under trees. The results show that the time spent in the sea did not affect their germination potential and that germination is possible, and even improves, in tidal zones. These initial results confirm the hypothesis of marine hydrochory for this species. They show that baobab fruits can remain in the sea without affecting the viability of seeds to colonize new areas. This could explain the frequent occurrence of this species along the coast of Madagascar and, more rarely, on the Mayotte coast.

Pterocarpus officinalis Jacq. is a legume tree native to the Caribbean islands and South America growing as a dominant species in swamp forests. To analyze (i) the genetic diversity and (ii) the symbiotic properties of its associated nitrogen-fixing soil bacteria, root nodules were collected from P. officinalis distributed in 16 forest sites of the Caribbean islands and French Guiana. The sequencing of the 16S-23S ribosomal RNA intergenic spacer region (ITS) showed that all bacteria belonged to the Bradyrhizobium genus. Bacteria isolated from insular zones showed very close sequence homologies with Bradyrhizobium genospecies V belonging to the Bradyrhizobium japonicum super-clade. By contrast, bacteria isolated from continental region displayed a larger genetic diversity and belonged to B. elkanii super-clade. Two strains from Puerto Rico and one from French Guiana were not related to any known sequence and could be defined as a new genospecies. Inoculation experiments did not show any host specificity of the Bradyrhizobium strains tested in terms of infectivity. However, homologous Bradyrhizobium sp. strain-P. officinalis provenance associations were more efficient in terms of nodule production, N acquisition, and growth than heterologous ones. The dominant status of P. officinalis in the islands may explain the lower bacterial diversity compared to that found in the continent where P. officinalis is associated with other leguminous tree species. The specificity in efficiency found between Bradyrhizobium strains and host tree provenances could be due to a coevolution process between both partners and needs to be taken in consideration in the framework of rehabilitation plantation programs.

Acacia mearnsii (De Wild) est une légumineuse arborée d'origine australienne introduite depuis 1970 dans la subéraie du Parc National d'El-Kala, au Nord-Est de l'Algérie. Du fait de son développement rapide, cet acacia fragilise les écosystèmes du parc et présente une grande menace pour le chêne-liège (Quercus suber L.). Notre objectif est d'étudier l'interaction entre A. mearnsii et Q. suber élevés en mono- et co-culture sur des sols provenant de trois sites: un site non envahis, un récemment envahis et un totalement envahis et d'analyser son effet sur la croissance et la mycorhization (MA) des deux plantes. Les résultats montrent un effet négatif de la présence de A. mearnsii sur la croissance du chêne-liège en fonction du type de sol, et peu d'effet en fonction du type de mono- ou co-culture. Concernant la colonisation mycorhizienne, A. mearnsii est plus fortement mycorhizé sur le sol provenant du site totalement envahi, que dans les deux autres conditions, contrairement au chêne-liège (espèce essentiellement ectotrophe) où la colonisation racinaire MA reste très faible quelles que soient les conditions.

Xanthomonas albilineans est l'agent causal de l'échaudure des feuilles, une des principales maladies bactériennes de la canne à sucre dont l'impact peut être très important lorsque des variétés sensibles sont infectées au champ. Les mécanismes qui régissent les interactions entre cet agent pathogène et la canne à sucre sont encore très peu connus. Les objectifs de ce travail étaient (i) d'identifier des déterminants moléculaires impliqués dans la survie épiphyte de X. albilineans et (ii) de préciser la localisation de la bactérie dans les tissus de la canne à sucre. Parmi les facteurs étudiés, les polysaccharides de surface et une protéine de la membrane externe (XaOmpA1) de X. albilineans s'avèrent indispensables pour la survie épiphyte de cet agent pathogène. En revanche, la molécule signal diffusible DSF et les métabolites secondaires codés par les gènes NRPS ("Non Ribosomal Peptide Synthetases") ne sont pas requis pour l'installation de la bactérie en surface des feuilles, au moins en l'absence d'autres microorganismes compétiteurs. Toutefois, la colonisation optimale de la phyllosphère de la canne à sucre nécessite la présence d'un système DSF/RpfGC intact. Dans la deuxième partie de ce travail, nous avons vérifié la localisation in planta de X. albilineans par microscopie confocale, immunocytochimie, et microscopie électronique à transmission. Les observations microscopiques réalisées ont permis de montrer que X. albilineans n'est pas limitée au xylème de la canne à sucre, comme on le considérait jusqu'à présent. Bien au contraire, cette bactérie est capable de quitter le système vasculaire de sa plante hôte et de pénétrer dans d'autres types cellulaires, notamment les cellules du parenchyme non vasculaire. Il s'agit là, à notre connaissance, d'un nouveau mécanisme de colonisation d'une plante par une bactérie phytopathogène qui reste à décrypter.

International audience; Azospirillum is a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) able to enhance growth and yield of cereals such as rice, maize and wheat. The growth-promoting ability of some Azospirillum strains appears to be highly specific to certain plant species and cultivars. In order to ascertain the specificity of the associative symbiosis between rice and Azospirillum, the physiological response of two rice cultivars, Nipponbare and Cigalon, inoculated with two rice-associated Azospirillum was analyzed at two levels: plant growth response and plant secondary metabolic response. Each strain of Azospirillum (Azospirillum lipoferum 4B isolated from Cigalon and Azospirillum sp. B510 isolated from Nipponbare) preferentially increased growth of the cultivar from which it was isolated. This specific effect is not related to a defect in colonization of host cultivar as each strain colonizes effectively both rice cultivars, either at the rhizoplane (for 4B and B510) and inside the roots (for B510). The metabolic profiling approach showed that, in response to PGPR inoculation, profiles of rice secondary metabolites were modified, with phenolic compounds such as flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic derivatives being the main metabolites affected. Moreover, plant metabolic changes differed according to Azospirillum strain \texttimes cultivar combinations; indeed, 4B induced major secondary metabolic profile modifications only on Cigalon roots, while B510, probably due to its endophytic feature, induced metabolic variations on shoots and roots of both cultivars, triggering a systemic response. Plant secondary metabolite profiling thereby evidences the specific interaction between an Azospirillum strain and its original host cultivar.

Leaf scald, a sugarcane disease caused by Xanthomonas albilineans, has been largely studied since its discovery in 1911. Numerous data were obtained and reported, from isolation, transmission and diagnosis of the pathogen to the complete sequence of its genome. Although X. albilineans was thought to be exclusively transmitted by infected cuttings and contaminated cutting implements for more than 80 years, the existence of an epiphytic life of this pathogen was reported in the late 1990s. We highlight herein the role of the epiphytic populationsof X. albilineans in plant and field contamination and the impact of environmental conditions, especially rainfall, on these populations of the pathogen. Data obtained from experimental research in Guadeloupe showed the capacity of X. albilineans, when rainfall is sufficient, to spread by aerial means within the sugarcane canopy in a field or between fields. This new epidemiological trait helps X. albilineans in contaminating rapidly healthy sugarcane plants and, in certain geographical locations, it can be much more important than disease spread by cutting implements. These new epidemiological data of sugarcane leaf scald lead us to propose a revisited infection cycle for X. albilineans.

The genome of Xanthomonas albilineans, the causal agent of sugarcane leaf scald, contains a cluster of genes called rpf for regulation of pathogenicity factors. This cluster of genes encodes a quorum sensing (also called cell-cell signaling) system that controls several cellular and biological processes in Xylella fastidiosa, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and several species of Xanthomonas. The rpf gene cluster is especially used by these pathogenic bacteria to regulate the expression of factors contributing to virulence such as extracellular polysaccharides, extracellular enzymes and flagellum synthesis. This cell-cell signaling is mediated by a signal molecule called DSF (for Diffusible Signaling Factor), and gene rpfF has been shown to be required for production of DSF. Perception of DSF and signal transduction depends on a two-component signal transduction system which comprises the sensor kinase RpfC and the regulator RpfG. The role of these rpf genes in X albilineans is not yet clear. In this study, several mutants of the rpf gene cluster of X albilineans were assessed for their capacity i) to produce DSF and disease symptoms, ii) to colonize the phyllosphere and iii) to spread within the sugarcane stalk. Mutations of rpfF in strain XaFL07-1 of X albilineans from Florida resulted in loss of DSF production and no or only small reduction of disease severity. Single deletion mutants of rpfC and rpfG also produced symptoms that were similar in severity to those caused by the wild type strain of the pathogen. However, when the entire rpfGCF region was deleted, the capacity of the pathogen to cause disease symptoms was slightly reduced and swimming motility was severely affected. Similarly, the capacity of the pathogen to colonize the phyllosphere of the host plant was affected only when the entire rpfGCF region was deleted. Unexpectedly, this latter mutant appeared to produce another signalling molecule, as evidenced by a positive reaction of the DSF reporter strain. Furthermore, all mutations in the DSF signal transduction system resulted in the capacity of the pathogen to colonize sugarcane spatially more efficiently than the wild type strain, whereas mutations in rpfF did not. Therefore, DSF encoded by rpfF does not appear essential for symptom expression, phyllosphere and sugarcane stalk colonization by X. albilineans strain XaFL07-1. However, mutation data in the sensor/regulator system suggest that pathogenicity and cell. cell signalling of X. albilineans may involve another signalling molecule or another sensor/regulator that remain to be identified.

The main objectives of this study were (1) to describe the diversity of mycorrhizal fungal communities associated with Uapaca bojeri, an endemic Euphorbiaceae of Madagascar, and (2) to determine the potential benefits of inoculation with mycorrhizal fungi [ectomycorrhizal and/or arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi] on the growth of this tree species and on the functional diversity of soil microflora. Ninety-four sporophores were collected from three survey sites. They were identified as belonging to the ectomycorrhizal genera Afroboletus, Amanita, Boletus, Cantharellus, Lactarius, Leccinum, Rubinoboletus, Scleroderma, Tricholoma, and Xerocomus. Russula was the most frequent ectomycorrhizal genus recorded under U. bojeri. AM structures (vesicles and hyphae) were detected from the roots in all surveyed sites. In addition, this study showed that this tree species is highly dependent on both types of mycorrhiza, and controlled ectomycorrhization of this Uapaca species strongly influences soil microbial catabolic diversity. These results showed that the complex symbiotic status of U. bojeri could be managed to optimize its development in degraded areas. The use of selected mycorrhizal fungi such the Scleroderma Sc1 isolate in nursery conditions could be of great interest as (1) this fungal strain is very competitive against native symbiotic microflora, and (2) the fungal inoculation improves the catabolic potentialities of the soil microflora.

Alissonotum piceum besucheti Endrödi, 1977 : a new introduction in Reunion Island (Coleoptera, Dynastidae). Detected since 2000 by adults collected in light-trap, a first observation of the larvae has been made in a sugar cane field in Réunion island during 2005. National audience; Depuis son apparition en 2000, quatre sérotypes de fièvre catarrhale ovine (FCO) ont été isolés en France : trois en Corse et un dans le Nord de la France. Huit ans après la première émergence, plusieurs leçons peuvent être dégagées. La répartition géographique des différentes souches apparues dans la zone euro-méditerranéenne permet de distinguer trois systèmes épidémiologiques indépendants. Au sein de ces systèmes, la capacité des insectes à transmettre la maladie est fonction de nombreux paramètres liés à l’hôte vertébré, à la souche virale et à l’insecte lui-même. Ces systèmes fonctionnant de façon différente, les approches de surveillance et de lutte contre la FCO doivent être adaptées.

International audience; Knowledge of propagation mechanisms is important for understanding the invasion ecology and management of invasive plants in order to restore invaded lands. The identification of recruitment pathways is one of the keys to understanding dispersal mechanisms and determining invasive plant control strategies. The objective of this study was to characterize the recruitment processes of Schinus terebenthifolius, one of the most serious plant invaders in Reunion Island's lowlands. Surprisingly, little attention was given in literature to vegetative propagation by suckering as a dispersal mechanism. Yet, field observations on abandoned farmland and riverbanks combined with germination experiments have shown major differences in recruitment patterns between wet and dry areas. On abandoned dryland farms, seedling emergence is 35 times less than on riverbanks and is replaced by suckering. Birds facilitated seed germination, but their role in seed dispersal (ornithochory) appeared minor and restricted to the formation of satellite invasion foci. Water movement appears to be a more efficient vector than ornithochory because it aids seed transportation (hydrochory), seed germination, and suckering on riverbanks. Control and restoration programs must distinguish the two kinds of recruitment that impact on short- and long-distance dispersal.

L'extension géographique de Leptoglossus occidentalis vers l'est de l'Amérique du Nord, en Europe et en France est présentée à l'aide de cartes récapitulatives. Après la première mention italienne en Europe en 1999, la première observation en France date de 2005. L'extension française en 2006 a été rapide, celle de 2007 encore plus, aboutissant à un total de 92 observations dans 20 départements. Un réseau d'une soixantaine d'observateurs a permis de réunir rapidement ces données de répartition nationale via Internet.

Colonization of the sugarcane leaf canopy by Xanthomonas albilineans appears to be an important step in the epidemiological cycle of leaf scald disease in Guadeloupe. Previous studies showed that healthy sugarcane plants can be infected by X. albilineans after aerial transmission of the pathogen. Impact of climatic conditions on variation of colonization of the sugarcane leaf canopy and subsequent stalk infection by the pathogen is, however, unknown. Trials were set up in Guadeloupe in 3 different locations with cultivar B69566, susceptible to leaf scald, but still grown commercially in Guadeloupe. Disease-free tissue-culture propagated sugarcane plants were transferred to the field in 1999. Epiphytic populations of X. albilineans were regularly monitored for 3 crops (plant cane and two ratoons) by measuring bacterial populations in water droplets sampled from the sugarcane leaf surface. Infection of sugarcane stalks by X. albilineans was determined by isolating the pathogen from the stalk sap after 11-12 months of growth in each crop cycle. In plant cane, the first detection of the pathogen on the leaf canopy varied according to proximity of other sugarcane fields and climatic conditions. Additionally, once the leaf canopy was entirely colonized, epiphytic population sizes of the pathogen also varied between crop cycles and locations. Maximum population sizes were observed at the end of the wet season (November-December). These populations ranged from 2 to 107 bacteria per ml of water droplet according to crop location and crop cycle. Bacterial populations on the leaf surface were correlated with total rainfall during the wet season (first half of the crop cycle) and percentage of stalk infection by X. albilineans varied in accordance with epiphytic populations of the pathogen. The amount of rainfall therefore appeared critical for the epiphytic phase of sugarcane leaf scald and subsequent stalk infection. If these results can be confirmed with other sugarcane cultivars, amount of rainfall could be used to predict stalk infection after aerial transmission of the leaf scald pathogen. (Texte intégral)

Bluetongue (BT) disease occurred for the first time in Corsica, France in 2000. Once the presence and the establishment of C. imicola were confirmed in a small area of the southern mainland of France (Var département), the risk of a bluetongue outbreak in this area became higher. In the case of mosquito-borne diseases, the vectorial capacity is a widely and useful adopted estimate used to assess the susceptibility of an area to a particular disease. This integrated approach was applied in the Var context. In this zone, four trapping sites were monitored weekly from mid-April 2005 to mid-November 2005 with a UV light trap. The abundance and the parity of C. imicola were collected and analysed in regard with local meteorological data. Expert opinions and previous published results were used to estimate others parameters of the vectorial capacity. Uncertainty and variability were taken into account by using probabilistic distributions. The vector competence of this C. imicola's population was tested through experimental infections under laboratory conditions. The benefits of such an approach are analysed with the purpose of fording few sensitive parameters which could be monitored in routine. (Texte intégral)

Invaders have often been said to display traits that favor colonisation (r-traits). However, while these traits may allow a species to reach empty habitats before other species do, they are usually associated with low competitive ability. More competitive species, even if they have lower colonisation ability, may prevent the permanent installation of an r-selected invader. Competition rather than colonisation may therefore limit invasion. The best situations to test this hypothesis are "invasive series", when successive invasions by related taxa occur in the same place. Phylogenetic proximity of the taxa and common environment ensure that trade-offs between colonization- and competition-oriented traits can be detected. We expect biological traits to change from colonisation-oriented to increasingly competition-oriented strategies along the invasive series. This prediction was tested using two different model systems, both of which invade tropical insular habitats: freshwater snails of the Thiaridae family in Martinique and Tephritid flies in La Réunion. In both systems, in consistency with our hypothesis, the first invaders were relatively r-selected, and were later replaced by new genotypes and/or taxa with increasingly lower fecundity and higher investment per offspring.

Tricholoma populinum et Tricholoma scalpturatum sont deux champignons basidiomycètes formant des symbioses ectomycorhiziennes avec les racines des plantes ligneuses. Ces deux espèces phylogénétiquement proches, diffèrent cependant par leur niveau de spécificité envers la plante-hôte: T. populinum est Inféodé aux peupliers tandis que T. scalpturatum présente un spectre d'hôtes très large. Ces deux espèces peuvent se rencontrer ensemble, sous peupliers noirs (Populus nigra), dans des environnements très variés quant aux perturbations qu'ils subissent. Dans ce travail, nous examinons dans quelle mesure les différences de spécificité d'hôtes et les contraintes environnementales peuvent se traduire par des différences au niveau des caractéristiques des populations de ces deux espèces. Nous comparons les structures de populations et les stratégies de colonisation de ces deux espèces fongiques dans deux sites: une peupleraie noire naturelle en bordure de Garonne régulièrement soumise à des crues et une pelouse bordée de peupliers noirs, indemne de toute perturbation. Les carpophores apparus sur les deux sites, ont été récoltés et les génets différenciés à l'aide de marqueurs RAPD et RFLP dans l'espaceur intergénique (IGS) de l'ADNr nucléaire. En zone non perturbée, seulement 2 génets regroupant chacun de nombreux carpophores distribués sur plusieurs dizaines de m2 ont été trouvés au sein de la population de T. populinum. Ce résultat indiquait une stratégie de colonisation de type C, privilégiant la croissance végétative du mycélium dans le sol pour cette espèce. Les carpophores de T. scalpturatum se distribuaient en 12 génets, petits (représentés par 1 ou quelques carpophores) ou plus grands (30 à 40 m2). Cette population semblait ainsi structurée à la fois par la croissance végétative et la reproduction sexuée selon une stratégie mixte (r et C). En zone perturbée, la même tendance a été mise en évidence avec cependant une prépondérance accrue de la reproduction sexuée pour les 2 espèces. Ainsi, la population de T. scalpturatum était exclusivement constituée de multiples petits génets et donnait l'image d'une population à stratégie r fortement structurée par la reproduction sexuée, la colonisation s'opérant uniquement par spores. Chez T. populinum, un génet, parmi 7 identifiés, présentait une croissance végétative importante tandis que les autres apparaissaient petits. Ce résultat indiquait une population à stratégie mixte (r et C) pour cette espèce sur ce site perturbé. La caractérisation des carpophores a donc révélé, quelque soit le site, une diversité génétique beaucoup plus élevée, des génets moins pérennes et un mode de colonisation par reproduction sexuée plus marqué chez T. scalpturatum, l'espèce à large spectre d'hôtes, que chez T. populinum, l'espèce spécialiste du peuplier.

Les introductions de légumineuses ligneuses représentent des risques notamment pour le développement d' espèces devenant des pestes végétales. Il est nécessaire de se référer en premier lieu aux listes d'espèces envahissantes présentes en divers endroits du monde et de les considérer comme potentiellement envahissantes ailleurs. L'exemple de l'île de la Réunion montre que les mimosacées, notamment, constituent une famille pour laquelle les introductions doivent s'envisager avec beaucoup de circonspection.

La maladie des raies noires (MRN) constitue actuellement la contrainte majeure de la culture des bananiers et plantains. Un haut niveau de diversité génétique a été détecté au sein des populations de Mycosphaerella fijiensis. Ainsi, les programmes d'amélioration génétique s'orientent plutôt vers une exploitation de la résistance partielle. Cependant, l'évaluation de la résistance partielle, telle qu'elle est conduite actuellement en conditions naturelles d'infestation, ne permet pas d'estimer les différents paramètres du cycle infectieux ainsi que la variabilité de l'agressivité chez M. fijiensis. Afin de s'affranchir de ces contraintes, une méthode d'inoculation en conditions contrôlées sur fragments foliaires en survie a été développée. Des différences significatives ont été mises en évidence pour le temps d'incubation (TI) et l'efficacité d'infection (EI) sur une gamme de 6 cultivars. Cette étude a permis également de détecter des niveaux d'agressivité différents chez M. fijiensis. Des méthodes d'observation sont actuellement développées pour estimer de façon reproductible les autres paramètres du cycle infectieux. Enfin, la conformité de cette méthode d'inoculation est actuellement testée sur une gamme de bananiers de référence avec l'évaluation de plusieurs paramètres

Depuis le début du vingtième siècle, les invasions de Criquet pèlerin #Schistocerca gregaria# (Forskâl, 1775) en ex-URSS ont été enregistrées à maintes reprises. Des recherches ont été entreprises durant les grandes périodes d'invasion généralisée au cours desquelles les pays de l'Asie Centrale et de la Transcaucasie de l'ex-URSS ont été touchés par les pullulations issues des foyers de grégarisation situés en Iran ou dans la péninsule indo-pakistanaise. Cet ouvrage de synthèse repose sur une cinquantaine de monographies et d'articles originaux relatifs au Criquet pèlerin, publiés en russe. Les résultats des observations de terrain et ceux obtenus au cours d'expériences de laboratoire sur différents aspects de la bio-écologie de ce ravageur sont discutés. Une attention particulière est apportée à l'étude des pullulations du Criquet pèlerin dans la partie asiatique de son aire de dispersion et à la prévision des invasions en ex-URSS. Plusieurs travaux d'acridologues occidentaux sont cités pour enrichir les discussions sur les hypothèses exposées.
