Search

Accurate conversion of neutron time-of-flight (TOF) to wavelength, and its uncertainty, is of fundamental importance to neutron scattering measurements. Especially in cases where instruments are highly configurable, the determination of the absolute wavelength after any change must always be performed. Inspired by the manner with which neutron spectrometers determine the absolute wavelength, we evaluate for the first time, in the author's knowledge, a commonly used method for converting TOF to neutron wavelength, the distance of a monitor from the source of neutrons and we analytically calculate the uncertainty contributions that limit the precision of the conversion. The method was evaluated at the V20 test beamline at the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB), emulating the ESS source with a pulse of 2.86 ms length and 14 Hz repetition rate, by using a mini-chopper operated at 140 Hz, beam monitors (BMs) and data acquisition infrastructure. The mini-chopper created well-defined neutron pulses and the BM was placed at two positions, enabling the average wavelength of each of the pulses created to be determined. The used experimental setup resulted in absolute wavelength determination at the monitor positions with a $\delta \lambda_{mean} / \lambda_{mean}$ of $\sim$1.8% for $\lambda >4$ \r{A}. With a modest increase of the distance between the reference monitor positions a $\delta \lambda_{mean} / \lambda_{mean}$ of below 0.5% can be achieved. Further improvements are possible by using a thinner monitor, smaller chopper disc openings and a higher rotational speed chopper. The method requires only two neutron measurements and doesn't necessitate the use of crystals or complex fitting, and could constitute a suitable addition to imaging, diffraction, reflectometers and small angle neutron scattering instruments, at spallation sources, that do not normally utilise fast choppers.

Spin excitations of layered copper oxide show various characteristic features, depending on the carrier concentration. In this study, we conducted inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (LSCO), with $x$ = 0, 0.075, 0.18, and 0.30 and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_4$ (LSNO) with 1/3, to clarify the origin of the intensity enhancement in the excitation spectrum of LSCO at the energy ($\omega$) of 16--19 meV [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 91}, 224404 (2015), {\it ibid}. {\bf 93}, 094416 (2016)]. We confirmed the presence of a peak-structure in the $\omega$-dependence of the local spin susceptibility $\chi''(\omega)$ of superconducting (SC) LSCO with a peak energy of 16--19 meV, where the spin excitations intersect optical phonon branches. A comparable peak-structure is not observed in the insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$, LSNO, and heavily overdoped LSCO with $x$ = 0.30. A dome-shaped $x$-dependence of the integrated intensity around the peak energies is revealed for SC phase by summarizing the present and previously reported results. Furthermore, our phonon calculation on LCO shows the existence of two optical branches at $\sim$19 meV that could stabilize stripe-alignment of carriers due to out-of-plane vibrations of Cu or O of the CuO$_2$ planes. These results indicate the interplay among spin, charge, and lattice dynamics and suggest that the intensity enhancement is associated with their composite excitations., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Phonons in single crystals of PrFeAsO_{1-y} are investigated using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering and ab initio pseudopotential calculations. Extensive measurements of several samples at temperatures spanning the magnetic ordering temperature and the superconducting transition temperature show that there are some changes in phonon spectra with temperature and/or doping. We compare our measurements with several ab initio pseudopotential models (nonmagnetic tetragonal, oxygen-deficient O_{7/8} supercell, magnetic orthorhombic, and magnetic tetragonal) and find that the experimentally observed changes are much smaller than the differences between the experimental data and the calculations. Agreement is improved if magnetism is included in the calculations via the local spin density approximation, as the Fe atomic motions parallel to the ferromagnetic ordering direction are softened. However, the antiferromagnetically polarized modes remain hard, and in disagreement with the experimental data. In fact, given the increasing evidence for anisotropy in the iron pnictide materials, the phonon response is surprisingly isotropic. We consider several modifications of the ab initio calculations to improve the agreement with the experimental data. Improved agreement is found by setting the matrix to zero (clipping the bond) between nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetically aligned Fe atoms in the magnetic calculation, or by softening only the in-plane nearest-neighbor Fe-As force constant in the nonmagnetic calculation. We discuss these results in the context of other measurements, especially of phonons, for several FeAs systems. Fluctuating magnetism may be a partial explanation for the failure of the calculations, but seems incomplete in the face of the similarity of the measured phonon response in all the systems investigated here including those known to have static magnetism., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures

By performing time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements on a large amount of single crystals of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, we studied detailed structure of the imaginary part of the dynamic spin susceptibility over a wide range of phase space. In the normal state at T=5 K, strong incommensurate (IC) peaks were clearly observed at around $\mathbf{Q}_\text{c}=(0.3,0.3)$ up to at least $\hbar\omega=80$ meV. In addition, our data also show strong magnetic fluctuations that exist on the ridges connecting the IC peaks around the $(\pi,\pi)$ point rather than around the $\Gamma$ point. Our results are consistent with the semi-mean-field random phase approximation calculation for a two dimensional Fermi liquid with a characteristic energy of 5.0 meV. Furthermore, the IC fluctuations were observed even at room temperature.

A quasi-one dimensional magnetism was discovered in the post-perovskite CaRuO3 (Ru4+: 4d4, Cmcm), which is iso-compositional with the perovskite CaRuO3 (Pbnm). An antiferromagnetic spin-chain function with -J/kB = 350 K well reproduces the experimental curve of the magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature, suggesting long-range antiferromagnetic correlations. The anisotropic magnetism is probably owing to the dyz - 2p- dzx and dzx - 2p- dyz superexchange bonds along a-axis. The Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat is fairly small, 0.16(2) mJ mol-1 K-2, indicating that the magnetism reflects localized nature of the 4d electrons. As far as we know, this is the first observation of an integer (S = 1) spin-chain antiferromagnetism in the 4d electron system., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

Additional charge carriers were introduced to the iron oxyarsenide Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6 under a high-pressure condition, followed by measurements of electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetic susceptibility. The host compound Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6 shows metallic conductivity down to ~200 K and turns to show a semiconducting-like conductivity accompanied by a positive magneto-resistance (22% at 70 kOe). Although the carrier density is comparable at 300 K (5.9x1021 cm-3) with that of the other Fe-based superconductors, no superconductivity appears down to 2 K. This is primarily because the net carrier density decreases over 3 orders of magnitude on cooling and additionally a possible magnetic order at ~120 K prevents carriers from pairing. We performed inelastic neutron scattering on powder sample of the P-doped iron-based superconductor BaFe2(As0.65P0.35)2 with Tc = 30K, whose superconducting (SC) order parameter is expected to have line nodes. We have observed spin resonance at Q $\sim$ 1.2{\AA}^{-1} and E=12 meV in the SC state. The resonance enhancement, which can be a measure of the area of sign reversal between the hole and electron Fermi surfaces (FSs), is comparable to those of other iron-based superconductors without line nodes. This fact indicates that the sign reversal between the FSs is still dominant in this system, and the line nodes should create only limited area of sign-reversal on a single FS. Hence the system can hold relatively high-Tc. Comparison with theoretical calculation indicates horizontal line nodes may be a candidate to reproduce the observation., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

An optimally doped iron-based superconductor LaFeAsO$_{0.92}$F$_{0.08}$ with $T_c = 29$ K has been studied by inelastic powder neutron scattering. The magnetic excitation at $Q=1.15$ \AA$^{-1}$ is enhanced below $T_c$, leading to a peak at $E_{res}\sim13$ meV as the resonance mode, in addition to the formation of a gap at low energy below the crossover energy $\Delta_{c}\sim10 meV$. The peak energy at $Q=1.15$ \AA$^{-1}$ corresponds to $5.2 k_B T_c$ in good agreement with the other values of resonance mode observed in the various iron-based superconductors, even in the high-$T_c$ cuprates. Although the phonon density of states has a peak at the same energy as the resonance mode in the present superconductor, the $Q$-dependence is consistent with the resonance being of predominately magnetic origin., Comment: 4 pages, 5 Postscript figures

Newly synthesized perovskite NaOsO3 shows Curie-Weiss metallic nature at high temperature and suddenly goes into an antiferromagnetically insulating state at 410 K on cooling. Electronic specific heat at the low temperature limit is absent, indicating that the band gap fully opens. In situ observation in electron microscopy undetected any lattice anomalies in the vicinity of the transition temperature. Low energy spin fluctuations are studied for the electron-doped Fe-based superconductor LaFeAsO(1-x)F(x) by inelastic neutron scattering up to the energy transfer of w = 15 meV using polycrystalline samples. Superconducting samples (x=0.057, Tc=25 K and x=0.082, Tc=29 K) show dynamical spin susceptibility chi"(w) almost comparable with the parent sample's. However chi"(w) is almost vanished in the x=0.158 sample where the superconductivity is highly suppressed. These results are compatible with the theoretical suggestions that the spin fluctuation plays an important role for the superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Hall conductance $\sigma_{xy}$ as the Chern numbers of the Berry connection in the magnetic Brillouin zone is calculated for a realistic multi band tight-band model of graphene with non-orthogonal basis. It is confirmed that the envelope of $\sigma_{xy}$ coincides with a semi-classical result when magnetic field is sufficiently small. The Hall resistivity $\rho_{xy}$ from the weak-field Boltzmann theory also explains the overall behaviour of the $\sigma_{xy}$ if the Fermi surface is composed of a single energy band. The plateaux of $\sigma_{xy}$ are explained from semi-classical quantization and necessary modification is proposed for the Dirac fermion regimes., Comment: 5pages, 3figures

The lattice dynamics of LaFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} (x=0, 0.1) and PrFeAsO_{1-y} (y~0.1) are investigated using inelastic x-ray scattering and ab-initio calculation. Measurements of powder samples provide an approximation to the phonon DOS, while dispersion is measured from a single crystal of PrFeAsO_{1-y}. A model that agrees reasonably well with all of the data at room temperature is built from results of ab-initio calculations by softening the strength of the Fe-As bond by 30%., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; some changes of the text and a revision of figure 2

NaV2O4 crystals were grown under high pressure using a NaCl flux, and the crystals were characterized with X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetization. The structure of NaV2O4 consists of double chains of edge-sharing VO6 octahedra. The resistivity is highly anisotropic, with the resistivity perpendicular to the chains more than 20 times greater than that parallel to the chains. Magnetically, the intrachain interactions are ferromagnetic and the interchain interactions are antiferromagnetic; 3D antiferromagnetic order is established at 140 K. First principles electronic structure calculations indicate that the chains are half metallic. We present results of neutron scattering experiments on YBa2Cu3O6.95 (Tc=93K). Our results indicate that magnetic collective modes due to correlated local moments are present both above and below Tc in optimally doped YBCO. The magnon-like modes are robust and not overdamped by itinerant particle-hole excitations, which may point at a substantial static or slowly fluctuating charge inhomogeneity. The entire temperature dependence of the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ in the $\beta$-pyrochlore KOs$_2$O$_6$ is obtained from high-field resistivity and magnetic measurements. Both techniques identically give $H_{\rm c2}(T \simeq 0 {\rm K})$ not only surprisingly high ($\sim 33$ T), but also the approach to it unusually temperature-\emph{linear} all the way below $T_{\rm c}$ (= 9.6 K). We show that, while $H_{\rm c2}(0)$ exceeds a simple spin-singlet paramagnetic limit $H_{\rm P}$, it is well below an $H_{\rm P}$ enhanced due to the missing spatial inversion symmetry reported recently in KOs$_2$O$_6$, ensuring that the pair-breaking here is executed by orbital degrees. {\it Ab initio} calculations of orbital $H_{\rm c2}$ show that the unusual temperature dependence is reproduced if dominant s-wave superconductivity resides on the smaller closed Fermi surfaces., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been performed on Sb(111) to elucidate the origin of anomalous electronic properties in group-V semimetal surfaces. The surface was found to be metallic despite the semimetallic character of bulk. We clearly observed two surface-derived Fermi surfaces which are likely spin split, demonstrating that the spin-orbit interaction plays a dominant role in characterising the surface electronic states of group-V semimetals. Universality/disimilarity of the electronic structure in Bi and Sb is discussed in relation to the granular superconductivity, electron-phonon coupling, and surface charge/spin density wave., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. to be published in Phys. This series discusses the origin of sound damping and dispersion in glasses. In particular, we address the relative importance of anharmonicity versus thermally activated relaxation. In this first article, Brillouin-scattering measurements of permanently densified silica glass are presented. It is found that in this case the results are compatible with a model in which damping and dispersion are only produced by the anharmonic coupling of the sound waves with thermally excited modes. The novel 4d perovskite compound SrRhO3 was investigated by isovalent doping studies. The solubility limits of Ca and Ba onto Sr-site were below 80% and 20%, respectively. Although SrRhO3 was chemically compressed, approximately 5.7% by the Ca doping, no significant influence was observed on the magnetic and electrical properties., Comment: To be published in a special issue of Physica B (the proceedings of LT23)

Inelastic neutron scattering data from a twinned single-crystal of YBa2Cu3O6.95 are presented that show a distinct a-b plane anisotropy in the oxygen vibrations. The Cu-O bond-stretching type phonons are simultaneously observed along the a and b directions due to a 4 meV splitting arising from the orthorhombicity. The present results show the bond-stretching branch along b (parallel to the chain) has a continuous dispersion, while the branch along a is discontinuous, suggesting a possibility of short-range cell-doubling along a. Furthermore, the LO mode along a is split in en-ergy from its TO partner at non-zero q-vectors, while the b mode is not. These results imply strong anisotropy in the electronic screening and a one-dimensional character in underlying charge fluctuations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The spin dynamics of an optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7 (Tc = 93 K) crystal array have been investigated in a wide range of momentum and energy (Q - E) space using the time-of-flight neutron scattering method. Incommensurate spin modulation in Q is a characteristic feature, as it is in the under-doped YBa2Cu3O6.7 with a different incommensurability. A linear relationship between the incommensurability and Tc is proposed. Along with the discovery of the same incommensurability in under-doped La2-ySryCuO4, it may be a generic characteristic of the high-Tc oxide superconductor., Comment: 5 figures, 1 in 2 parts (6 total files)

The electronic structures of Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu24O41 are calculated within the local density approximation. Around the Fermi energy there exist quasi-one-dimensional bands originated from the ladder and chain layers. The nearest-neighbor inter-ladder hoppings are estimated to be 5--20% of the intra-ladder ones.
