It has been generally accepted that the clinical onset of familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) begins before 20 years of age in most patients. In this study, we aimed to investigate the demographic and clinical characteristics of our FMF patients with an age of onset greater than or equal to20.

WOS: 000234385900003 Measurements of the rate of nitrogenous excretion were carried out in two batches of young Black Sea turbot (small 42 g, large 72 g) at 12 +/- 1 degrees C under natural light conditions (10 h light:14 In dark and 13 h light: 11 h dark, respectively). The ammonia nitrogen excretion rates of fish starved for 48 hours were 0.20 +/- 0.05 mg-N for the small fish and 0.18 +/- 0.09 mg-N/100g fish/h for the large. Fish were then fed a pellet diet containing 8.3% nitrogen at average rations of 0.67% and 0.59% of the body weight, respectively, for four days. On the fourth day, ammonia nitrogen excretion rates were evaluated. In both batches, the rates were 2-3 times higher immediately after feeding than in the starved fish, reaching a peak 3-6 hours after feeding and declining afterwards. For the small and large fish, respectively, 21% and 20% of the consumed nitrogen was excreted as ammonia nitrogen, 6% and 7% as urea nitrogen, and 8% and 4% as feces nitrogen within 24 hours after feeding.

In the present study, the larval development stages in the egg capsule of the Japanese snail (Rapana thomasiana, Gross 1861), distributed in the Black Sea were investigated. At the moment of capsule release, the diameter of the spherical egg was 151.5 ± 2.61 ?m. After the capsule was released, the eggs gradually lost their spherical structure. After the completion of the early larval development stage in the egg capsule, the larvae hatched from the capsule as a veliger on day 20. The larvae were pelagic during the following 5 days and settled to the bottom day 25. The length and width of the settled larvae reached 426.8 ± 2.84 ?m and 305.6 ± 2.2 ?m with a growth rate of 181.2% and 101.7%, respectively.

Background In 1972 Dr. Goldfinger of the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston published one of the most quoted ‘letters to the editor’ in New England Journal of Medicine, ‘Colchicine for Familial Mediterranean Fever’, (FMF).1 Here he described 5 patients whose FMF attacks resolved by the continuous administration of colchicine. This 30 year old observation has been reproduced by numerous controlled studies and changed the prognosis of this disease dramatically. Objectives To document the contribution of Professor Emir Ozkan MD, on the use of colchicine in FMF. Methods Results What is not widely known is the contribution of another physician, Dr. Emir Ozkan, professor of cardiology in the Medical Faculty of University of Istanbul, to the treatment of FMF. Dr. Ozkan and his colleagues published their findings in an article entitled ‘A New Approach to the Treatment of Periodic Fever’ in the Medical Bulletin of Istanbul Medical Faculty.2 This article included their favourable results in 14 patients with FMF and also reported the disappearance of proteinuria in a patient with amyloidosis after 6 months of colchicine treatment. The authors had submitted this article on April 17, 1972, some 8 months before the appearance of the Goldfinger article in the New England Journal of Medicine which appeared in the December 21 issue of the journal. Conclusion A Goldfinger-Ozkan Award for Excellence in Clinical Science and Management of FMF, was given for the first time during the II. In this research, the possibilities of obtaining larva from oysters (Ostrea edulis L.) living in the Black Sea and their metamorphosis stage were investigated. There were no difficulties in obtaining larvae. The results of this investigation indicate that flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) culture is possible in Black Sea conditions.

WOS: 000080318300009 The research was carried out to determine the growth differences of rainbow trout in freshwater and seawater. Totally 480 individuals with initial mean weights of 88.08+/-0.91 g and 85.58+/-1.15 g were used in the experiment which was carried out in a freshwater facility of a commercial trout farm and the sea farm of Sinop Fisheries Faculty of the University of Ondokuz Mayis. The experiment was conducted for 90 days. At the end of the experiment, rainbow trouts grown in freshwater and seawater, reached final average weights of 295.56+/-5.65 g and 388.41+/-8.12 g and the daily growth rates were found as 2.61% and 3.37%, respectively. In spite of the lower temperature in seawater (6.9 degrees C in averange at the sea site while 8.4 degrees C at the freshwater site), the growth of fish reared in seawater was about 46% superior (1.46 times) to that of their contemporaries at the freshwater site. Consequently, it has been concluded that breeding of rainbow trout in sea cages is more advantageous than in freshwater facilities.

The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and Arthritis Impact Measurement Scale (AIMS) in our patient population with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and also to find some associations with clinical assessment of disability. One hundred and twenty-three consecutive adult patients with RA were included in the study. Pain, and global assessments by patients and physicians were recorded using a 10 cm visual analogue scale. Each patient completed the HAQ and AIMS questionnaires. Correlations among tender and swollen joint counts, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, pain, and AIMS anxiety and depression scores were all investigated. Pearson correlation was used to assess the possible correlations between each questionnaire and clinical variables. Pain and the AIMS subscales of mobility, dexterity, social activity and activities of daily living correlated with global assessments by patients and physicians, and tender joint counts. Depression correlated with pain and disability (HAQ). It was also of note that we observed high intercorrelation between the global assessments of physicians and patients. It was concluded that a measure of functional status, patient global assessment and pain score should be considered as important in the evaluation of RA patients. Measuring psychological well-being also provides further information. The HAQ, with the addition of the anxiety and depression sections of AIMS (CLINHAQ), provides the advantage of a global evaluation of these chronically ill patients.

WOS: A1997XD66100014 In this study, some population and reproduction characteristics of picarel (Spicara smaris L., 1758) catching from the bay of Sinop. Totally, 985 fishes were examined from January to December 1993. According to the results, picarel ranged between age of I and V, The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was used to find out the reproduction season of picarel. It was observed that maximum egg laying was from June, July and August. The number of the eggs was ranged 7524 - 11536 and the diameter of the eggs was 0.55 +/- 0.093 mm. The lenght - weight relation ship was calculated as W = 0.008072 L-3,L-1.

This study was conduct to determine the effects of two kinds of feed, which were the different on unit price and contain of protein ratio, on growth in net cages for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss W. 1792) in the Black Sea. The experiment was planned at the mariculture unit of Sinop Faculty of Fisheries, University of Ondokuz Mayis. for a period of 11 weeks. During the experiment totally 240 rainbow trout about 280 g in average weight were used. Two kinds of feed that used in the research which were consisted of 40 % and 45 % of protein ratios were not effected to growth parameters such as the live weight gain, condition factor and the feed conversion ratio for rainbow trout. It was found that live weight of trouts were as 702.01 g. 693.82 g and the food conversion rate were as 2.85, 3.14 and the conditon factor were as 1.47, 1.37 according to the cages which were arranged at the two different feeds. According to the results, feed with a protein ratio higher than 40 % sould not be necessary to use for bigger rainbow trout than 250 g. Besides this interpretation, it is excepted that ever feed mixture with the protein ratio of 40 % or less can be used for feeding of rainbow trout bigger than 250 g.

The objective of this study is to determine, the effects of the different stock densities on growth of Rainbow Trout in net cages (Oncorhynchus mykiss W. 1792) in the Black Sea. The experiment was conducted at the mariculture unit of Sinop Faculty of Fisheries. University of Ondokuz Mayis. for a period of 64 days. During the experiment 1080 Rainbow trout with an average weight of 107 gr. were used. At the end of the experiment, total weight increase the daily live weight gain, the increase rate, the food conversion rate, the condition factor and the mortality rate were determined for each stocking density. Experimental groups of 102,15 g, 107,77 g and 111,07 g mean initial body weight reached 279.31 g. 270,89 g and 270,08 g mean final weight respectively at the end of the experiment. It is concluded that the stocking density at harvest in trout cages in the Black Sea should be arranged as 20 kg/m3.
