Search

NGC 4472 is home to five ultraluminous X-ray sources hosted by globular clusters. These sources have been suggested as good black hole candidates in extragalactic globular clusters$-$ a highly sought after population that may provide observational information regarding the progenitors of merging black hole binaries. In this body of work, we present X-ray and optical follow up to one of these sources, CXOUJ1229410+075744 (GCU1). We find no evidence of [OIII] optical emission in GCU1 which indicates a lack of significant evidence for super-Eddington outflows, unlike what is seen in a handful of ULXs in extragalactic GCs. X-ray monitoring from 2019-2021 shows no detected X-ray emission above a few $\times$ $10^{38}$ erg/s. Comparisons of the multi-wavelength properties to disc-dominated, near Eddington Galactic black hole low mass X-ray binaries (GRS 1915+105 and XTEJ1817-330) suggests that GCU1 may show similar behaviour to GRS 1915+105 in terms of X-ray variability and similar relationships between $L_X$ and $kT$, with GCU1 showing maximum X-ray luminosities one order of magnitude higher., Accepted to MNRAS

Radio continuum observations offer a new window on compact objects in globular clusters compared to typical X-ray or optical studies. As part of the MAVERIC survey, we have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array to carry out a deep (median central noise level of approximately 4 microJy per beam) radio continuum survey of 26 southern globular clusters at central frequencies of 5.5 and 9.0 GHz. This paper presents a catalogue of 1285 radio continuum sources in the fields of these 26 clusters. Considering the surface density of background sources, we find significant evidence for a population of radio sources in seven of the 26 clusters, and also identify at least 11 previously known compact objects (6 pulsars and 5 X-ray binaries). While the overall density of radio continuum sources with 7.25-GHz flux densities greater than about 20 microJy in typical globular clusters is relatively low, the survey has already led to the discovery of several exciting compact binaries, including a candidate ultracompact black hole X-ray binary in 47 Tuc. Many of the unclassified radio sources near the centres of the clusters are likely to be true cluster sources, and multi-wavelength follow-up will be necessary to classify these objects and better understand the demographics of accreting compact binaries in globular clusters., 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Understanding the natal kicks received by neutron stars (NSs) during formation is a critical component of modelling the evolution of massive binaries. Natal kicks are an integral input parameter for population synthesis codes, and have implications for the formation of double NS systems and their subsequent merger rates. However, many of the standard observational kick distributions that are used are obtained from samples created only from isolated NSs. Kick distributions derived in this way overestimate the intrinsic NS kick distribution. For NSs in binaries, we can only directly estimate the effect of the natal kick on the binary system, instead of the natal kick received by the NS itself. Here, for the first time, we present a binary kick distribution for NSs with low-mass companions. We compile a catalogue of 145 NSs in low-mass binaries with the best available constraints on proper motion, distance, and systemic radial velocity. For each binary, we use a three-dimensional approach to estimate its binary kick. We discuss the implications of these kicks on system formation, and provide a parametric model for the overall binary kick distribution, for use in future theoretical modelling work. We compare our results with other work on isolated NSs and NSs in binaries, finding that the NS kick distributions fit using only isolated pulsars underestimate the fraction of NSs that receive low kicks. SMC X-1 is a high-mass X-ray binary showing superorbital modulation with an unstable period. Previous monitoring shows three excursion events in 1996--1998, 2005--2007, and 2014--2016. The superorbital period drifts from >60 days to, 7 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report a peculiar variable blue star in the globular cluster NGC 6397, using Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging. Its position in the colour-magnitude diagrams, and its spectrum, are consistent with this star being a helium core white dwarf (He WD) in a binary system. The optical light curve shows a periodicity at 18.5 hours. We argue that this periodicity is due to the rotation of the WD and possibly due to magnetic spots on the surface of the WD. This would make this object the first candidate magnetic He WD in any globular cluster (GC), and the first candidate magnetic WD in a detached binary system in any GC and one of the few He WDs with a known rotation period and of magnetic nature. Another possibility is that this system is a He WD in a binary system with another WD or another degenerate object, which would make this object one of the few candidate non-accreting double degenerate binaries in any GC., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate a sample of seven edge-on spiral galaxies using Chandra observations. Edge-on spiral galaxies allow us to clearly separate source associated with their star-forming regions versus the outer edges of the system; offering a clear advantage over other systems. We uncover a number of X-ray point sources across these galaxies, and after eliminating contaminating foreground and background sources, we identify 12 candidate ultraluminous X-ray sources. All of these sources are projected onto the central regions, implying that the majority of ULXs in this sample of spiral galaxies are disk/bulge, and thus not halo sources. This also includes two transient ULXs, which may be long-duration transients and low mass X-ray binaries. This finding illustrates the need for further studies of transient ULXs., accepted to MNRAS

Transitional millisecond pulsars are millisecond pulsars that switch between a rotation-powered millisecond pulsar state and an accretion-powered X-ray binary state, and are thought to be an evolutionary stage between neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries and millisecond pulsars. So far, only three confirmed systems have been identified in addition to a handful of candidates. We present the results of a multi-wavelength study of the low-mass X-ray binary NGC 6652B in the globular cluster NGC 6652, including simultaneous radio and X-ray observations taken by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and optical spectroscopy and photometry. This source is the second brightest X-ray source in NGC 6652 ($L_{\textrm{X}}\sim1.8\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and is known to be variable. We observe several X-ray flares over the duration of our X-ray observations, in addition to persistent radio emission and occasional radio flares. Simultaneous radio and X-ray data show no clear evidence of anti-correlated variability. Optical spectra of NGC 6652B indicate variable, broad H $\alpha$ emission which transitions from double-peaked emission to absorption over a time-scale of hours. We consider a variety of possible explanations for the source behaviour, and conclude that based on the radio and X-ray luminosities, short time-scale variability and X-ray flaring, and optical spectra, NGC 6652B is best explained as a transitional millisecond pulsar candidate that displays prolonged X-ray flaring behaviour. SMC X-1 has exhibited three super-orbital period excursions since the onset of X-ray monitoring beginning with RXTE's launch in 1995. NICER has recently probed a fourth observed excursion beginning in 2021 with our program Monitoring Observations of SMC X-1's Excursions (MOOSE). These sensitive new MOOSE data probe different super-orbital periods and phases within them. Spectral fits to the high-state continuum during April 2021 to January 2022 show that the intrinsic spectral shapes are characterised by a soft (kT~0.19 keV) disc component and a hard (Gamma~0.7) power-law tail. When the 2021-2022 NICER observations, taken during an excursion, are compared to 2016 XMM-Newton observations (outside of an excursion), we find little evidence for intrinsic spectral variability across the high-states, but find evidence for a >3 sigma change in the absorption, although we caution that there may be calibration differences between the two instruments. Thus, over different lengths of super-orbital periods, we see little evidence for intrinsic spectral changes in the high-state. Globular clusters (GCs) have been at the heart of many longstanding questions in many sub-fields of astronomy and, as such, systematic identification of GCs in external galaxies has immense impacts. In this study, we take advantage of M87's well-studied GC system to implement supervised machine learning (ML) classification algorithms - specifically random forest and neural networks - to identify GCs from foreground stars and background galaxies using ground-based photometry from the Canada-France-Hawai'i Telescope (CFHT). We compare these two ML classification methods to studies of "human-selected" GCs and find that the best performing random forest model can reselect 61.2% $\pm$ 8.0% of GCs selected from HST data (ACSVCS) and the best performing neural network model reselects 95.0% $\pm$ 3.4%. When compared to human-classified GCs and contaminants selected from CFHT data - independent of our training data - the best performing random forest model can correctly classify 91.0% $\pm$ 1.2% and the best performing neural network model can correctly classify 57.3% $\pm$ 1.1%. ML methods in astronomy have been receiving much interest as Vera C. Rubin Observatory prepares for first light. We introduce the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) rapid-response mode by presenting the first successful trigger on the short-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB) 181123B. Early-time radio observations of short GRBs may provide vital insights into the radio afterglow properties of Advanced LIGO- and Virgo-detected gravitational wave events, which will in turn inform follow-up strategies to search for counterparts within their large positional uncertainties. The ATCA was on target within 12.6 hr post-burst, when the source had risen above the horizon. While no radio afterglow was detected during the 8.3 hr observation, we obtained force-fitted flux densities of $7 \pm 12$ and $15 \pm 11~\mu$Jy at 5.5 and 9 GHz, respectively. Afterglow modelling of GRB 181123B showed that the addition of the ATCA force-fitted radio flux densities to the Swift X-ray Telescope detections provided more stringent constraints on the fraction of thermal energy in the electrons (log$\epsilon_e = -0.75^{+0.39}_{-0.40}$ rather than log$\epsilon_e = -1.13^{+0.82}_{-1.2}$ derived without the inclusion of the ATCA values), which is consistent with the range of typical $\epsilon_e$ derived from GRB afterglow modelling. This allowed us to predict that the forward shock may have peaked in the radio band $\sim10$ days post-burst, producing detectable radio emission $\gtrsim3-4$ days post-burst. Overall, we demonstrate the potential for extremely rapid radio follow-up of transients and the importance of triggered radio observations for constraining GRB blast wave properties, regardless of whether there is a detection, via the inclusion of force-fitted radio flux densities in afterglow modelling efforts., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Quiescent black hole X-ray binaries (X-ray luminosities 25 kpc, while initial optical astrometric measurements from Gaia Data Release 2 suggested likely distances of just a few kpc. Here, we use the most recent measurements from Gaia Early Data Release 3 and find a distance d=7.1(+4.8/-3.9) kpc and a potential kick velocity PKV=165(+81/-17) km/s, with distances up to ~20 kpc possible based on its parallax and proper motion. Even though there is now less tension between the parallax and donor-star based distance measurements, it remains an unresolved matter, and we conclude with suggestions on how to reconcile the two measurements., 13 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. The Galactic globular cluster NGC 3201 is the first Galactic globular cluster observed to host dynamically-confirmed stellar-mass black holes, containing two confirmed and one candidate black hole. This result indicates that globular clusters can retain black holes, which has important implications for globular cluster evolution. NGC 3201 has been observed as part of the MAVERIC survey of Galactic globular clusters. We use these data to confirm that there is no radio or X-ray detection of the three black holes, and present the first radio and X-ray limits on these sources. These limits indicate that any accretion present is at an extremely low rate and may be extremely inefficient. In particular, for the system ACS ID #21859, by assuming the system is tidally locked and any accretion is through the capture of the companion's winds, we constrain the radiative efficiency of any accretion to $\leq1.5\times10^{-5}$. We also combine the radio and X-ray source catalogues from the MAVERIC survey with the existing MUSE spectroscopic surveys and the HUGS catalogue of NGC 3201 to provide a catalogue of 42 multiwavelength sources in this cluster. Swift J1858.6-0814 is a transient neutron star X-ray binary discovered in October 2018. Multi-wavelength follow-up observations across the electromagnetic spectrum revealed many interesting properties, such as erratic flaring on minute timescales and evidence for wind outflows at both X-ray and optical wavelengths, strong and variable local absorption, and an anomalously hard X-ray spectrum. Here, we report on a detailed radio observing campaign consisting of one observation at 5.5/9 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, and nine observations at 4.5/7.5 GHz with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. A radio counterpart with a flat to inverted radio spectrum is detected in all observations, consistent with a compact jet being launched from the system. Swift J1858.6-0814 is highly variable at radio wavelengths in most observations, showing significant variability when imaged on 3-to-5-minute timescales and changing up to factors of 8 within 20 minutes. The periods of brightest radio emission are not associated with steep radio spectra, implying they do not originate from the launching of discrete ejecta. We find that the radio variability is similarly unlikely to have a geometric origin, be due to scintillation, or be causally related to the observed X-ray flaring. Instead, we find that it is consistent with being driven by variations in the accretion flow propagating down the compact jet. We compare the radio properties of Swift J1858.6-0814 with those of Eddington-limited X-ray binaries with similar X-ray and optical characteristics, but fail to find a match in radio variability, spectrum, and luminosity., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Accreting neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries show outflows -- and sometimes jets -- in the general manner of accreting black holes. However, the quantitative link between the accretion flow (traced by X-rays) and outflows and/or jets (traced by radio emission) is much less well-understood for neutron stars than for black holes, other than the general observation that neutron stars are fainter in the radio at a given X-ray luminosity. We use data from the deep MAVERIC radio continuum survey of Galactic globular clusters for a systematic radio and X-ray study of six luminous (L_X > 10^34 erg/s) persistent neutron star X-ray binaries in our survey, as well as two other transient systems also captured by our data. We find that these neutron star X-ray binaries show an even larger range in radio luminosity than previously observed. In particular, in quiescence at L_X ~ 3x10^34 erg/s, the confirmed neutron star binary GRS 1747--312 in Terzan 6 sits near the upper envelope of the black hole radio/X-ray correlation, and the persistently accreting neutron star systems AC 211 (in M15) and X1850--087 (in NGC 6712) show unusual radio variability and luminous radio emission. We interpret AC 211 as an obscured "Z source" that is accreting at close to the Eddington limit, while the properties of X1850--087 are difficult to explain, and motivate future coordinated radio and X-ray observations. We present a broadband radio study of the transient jets ejected from the black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1535-571, which underwent a prolonged outburst beginning on 2 September 2017. We monitored MAXI J1535-571 with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) at frequencies from 119 to 186 MHz over six epochs from 20 September to 14 October 2017. The source was quasi-simultaneously observed over the frequency range 0.84-19 GHz by UTMOST (the upgraded Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope), the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA). Using the LBA observations from 23 September 2017, we measured the source size to be $34\pm1$ mas. During the brightest radio flare on 21 September 2017, the source was detected down to 119 MHz by the MWA, and the radio spectrum indicates a turnover between 250 and 500 MHz, which is most likely due to synchrotron self-absorption (SSA). By fitting the radio spectrum with a SSA model and using the LBA size measurement, we determined various physical parameters of the jet knot (identified in ATCA data), including the jet opening angle (= $4.5\pm1.2^{\circ}$) and the magnetic field strength (= $104^{+80}_{-78}$ mG). Our fitted magnetic field strength agrees reasonably well with that inferred from the standard equipartition approach, suggesting the jet knot to be close to equipartition. Our study highlights the capabilities of the Australian suite of radio telescopes to jointly probe radio jets in black hole X-ray binaries (BH-XRBs) via simultaneous observations over a broad frequency range, and with differing angular resolutions. This suite allows us to determine the physical properties of XRB jets. Finally, our study emphasizes the potential contributions that can be made by the low-frequency part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA-Low) in the study of BH-XRBs., This article has been accepted for publication in PASA. We report new radio observations of a sample of thirty-six neutron star (NS) X-ray binaries, more than doubling the sample in the literature observed at current-day sensitivities. We report the discovery of a new low-mass X-ray binary near the center of the unassociated Fermi GeV gamma-ray source 4FGL J0540.0-7552. The source shows the persistent presence of an optical accretion disk and exhibits extreme X-ray and optical variability. It also has an X-ray spectrum well-fit by a hard power law with a Gamma = 1.8 and a high ratio of X-ray to gamma-ray flux. Together, these properties are consistent with the classification of the binary as a transitional millisecond pulsar (tMSP) in the sub-luminous disk state. Uniquely among the candidate tMSPs, 4FGL J0540.0-7552 shows consistent optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray evidence for having undergone a state change, becoming substantially brighter in the optical and X-rays and fainter in GeV gamma-rays sometime in mid-2013. In its current sub-luminous disk state, and like one other candidate tMSP in the Galactic field, 4FGL J0540.0-7552 appears to always be in an X-ray "flare mode", indicating that this could be common phenomenology for tMSPs., ApJ in press

Precise and accurate measurements of distances to Galactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) reduce uncertainties in the determination of XRB physical parameters. We have cross-matched the XRB catalogues of Liu et al. (2006, 2007) to the results of Gaia Data Release 2. We identify 86 X-ray binaries with a Gaia candidate counterpart, of which 32 are low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and 54 are high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). Distances to Gaia candidate counterparts are, on average, consistent with those measured by Hipparcos and radio parallaxes. When compared to distances measured by Gaia candidate counterparts, distances measured using Type I X-ray bursts are systematically larger, suggesting that these bursts reach only 50% of the Eddington limit. However, these results are strongly dependent on the prior assumptions used for estimating distance from the Gaia parallax measurements. Comparing positions of Gaia candidate counterparts for XRBs in our sample to positions of spiral arms in the Milky Way, we find that HMXBs exhibit mild preference for being closer to spiral arms; LMXBs exhibit mild preference for being closer to inter-arm regions. LMXBs do not exhibit any preference for leading or trailing their closest spiral arm. HMXBs exhibit a mild preference for trailing their closest spiral arm. The lack of a strong correlation between HMXBs and spiral arms may be explained by star formation occurring closer to the midpoint of the arms, or a time delay between star formation and HMXB formation manifesting as a spatial separation between HMXBs and the spiral arm where they formed., MNRAS in press; 16 pages, 8 figures. A number of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are physically associated with extragalactic globular clusters (GCs). We undertake a systematic X-ray analysis of eight of the brightest of these sources. We fit the spectra of the GC ULXs to single power law and single disk models. We find that the data never require that any of the sources change between a disk and a power law across successive observations. The GC ULXs best fit by a single disk show a bimodal distribution: they either have temperatures well below 0.5 keV, or variable temperatures ranging above 0.5 keV up to 2~keV. The GC ULXs with low kT have significant changes in luminosity but show little or no change in kT. By contrast, the sources with higher kT either change in both kT and $L_X$ together, or show no significant change in either parameter. Cygnus X-1 is a well-studied persistent black hole X-ray binary. Recently, the three parameters needed to estimate the black hole spin of this system, namely the black hole mass $M$, the orbital inclination $i$ and the source distance $D$, have been updated. In this work we redetermine the spin parameter using the continuum-fitting technique for those updated parameter values. Based on the assumption that the spin axis of the black hole is aligned with the orbital plane, we fit the thermal disk component to a fully relativistic thin accretion disk model. The error in the spin estimate arising from the combined observational uncertainties is obtained via Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We demonstrate that, without considering the counteracting torque effect, the new spin parameter is constrained to be a$_* > 0.9985$ (3$\sigma$), which confirms that the spin of the black hole in Cygnus X-1 is extreme., Comment: ApJ published

We investigate potential correlations between radio source counts (after background corrections) of 22 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) from the MAVERIC survey, and stellar encounter rates ($\Gamma$) and masses ($M$) of the GCs. Applying a radio luminosity limit of $L_\mathrm{lim}=5.0\times 10^{27}~\mathrm{erg~s^{-1}}$, we take a census of radio sources in the core and those within the half-light radius. By following a maximum likelihood method and adopting a simplified linear model, we find an unambiguous dependence of core radio source counts on $\Gamma$ and/or $M$ at 90% confidence, but no clear dependence of source counts within the half-light radius on either $\Gamma$ or $M$. Five of the identified radio sources in cores above our adopted limit are millisecond pulsars or neutron star X-ray binaries (XRBs), the dependence of which on $\Gamma$ is well-known, but another is a published black hole (BH) XRB candidate, and ten others are not identified. Accounting for the verified cluster members increases the significance of correlation with $M$ and/or $\Gamma$ (to 99% confidence), for fits to core and half-light region source counts, while excluding a dependence on $\Gamma$ alone at 90% (core) and 68% (half-light) confidence. This is consistent with published dynamical simulations of GC BH interactions that argue $\Gamma$ will be a poor predictor of the distribution of accreting BHs in GCs. Future multiwavelength follow-up to verify cluster membership will enable stronger constraints on the dependence of radio source classes on cluster properties, promising a new view on the dynamics of BHs in GCs., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We have identified three ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) hosted by globular clusters (GCs) within NGC 1316's stellar system. These discoveries bring the total number of known ULXs in GCs up to 20. We find that the X-ray spectra of the three new sources do not deviate from the established pattern of spectral behaviour of the other known GC ULXs. The consistency of the X-ray spectral behaviour for these sources points to multiple paths of formation and evolution mechanisms for these rare and unique sources. Using the now larger sample of GC ULXs, we compare the optical properties of the entire known population of GC ULXs to other GCs across five galaxies and find that the properties of clusters that host ULXs are quite different from the typical clusters. Lastly, any trend of GC ULXs being preferentially hosted by metal-rich clusters is not strongly significant in this sample., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

We present an analysis of 745.6 ks of archival Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer data accumulated between 2000 and 2016 of the millisecond pulsar (MSP) population in the rich Galactic globular cluster Terzan 5. Eight of the 37 MSPs with precise positions are found to have plausible X-ray source matches. Despite the deep exposure, the remaining MSPs are either marginally detected or have no obvious X-ray counterparts, which can be attributed to the typically soft thermal spectra of rotation-powered MSPs, which are strongly attenuated by the high intervening absorbing column (~$10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) towards the cluster, and in some instances severe source crowding/blending. For the "redback" MSP binaries, PSRs J1748-2446P and J1748-2446ad, and the "black widow" binary PSRs J1748-2446O, we find clear evidence for large-amplitude X-ray variability at the orbital period consistent with an intrabinary shock origin. The third redback MSP in the cluster, PSR J1748-2446A, shows large amplitude variations in flux on time scales of years, possibility due to state transitions or intense flaring episodes from the secondary star., 14 pages, 6 figures; submitted to the Astrophysical Journal

Very faint X-ray transients (VFXTs) are X-ray transients with peak X-ray luminosities ($L_X$) of $L_X\lesssim10^{36}$ erg/s, which are not well-understood. We carried out a survey of 16 square degrees of the Galactic Bulge with the Swift Observatory, using short (60 s) exposures, and returning every 2 weeks for 19 epochs in 2017-18 (with a gap from November 2017 to February 2018, when the Bulge was in sun-constraint). Our main goal was to detect and study VFXT behaviour in the Galactic Bulge across various classes of X-ray sources. In this work, we explain the observing strategy of the survey, compare our results with the expected number of source detections per class, and discuss the constraints from our survey on the Galactic VFXT population. We detected 91 X-ray sources, 25 of which have clearly varied by a factor of at least 10. 45 of these X-ray sources have known counterparts: 17 chromospherically active stars, 12 X-ray binaries, 5 cataclysmic variables (and 4 candidates), 3 symbiotic systems, 2 radio pulsars, 1 AGN, and a young star cluster. The other 46 are of previously undetermined nature. We utilize X-ray hardness ratios, searches for optical/infrared counterparts in published catalogs, and flux ratios from quiescence to outburst to constrain the nature of the unknown sources. Of these 46, 7 are newly discovered hard transients, which are likely VFXT X-ray binaries. Furthermore, we find strong new evidence for a symbiotic nature of 4 sources in our full sample, and new evidence for accretion power in 6 X-ray sources with optical counterparts. Owing to its massive, dense core, Terzan 5 has the richest population of millisecond pulsars known among Galactic globular clusters. Here we report new deep $2-8\,$GHz radio continuum observations of Terzan\,5 obtained with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We have identified a total of 24 sources within the cluster half-light radius, including 17 within the core radius. 19 are associated with previously studied millisecond pulsars and X-ray binaries. Three of the new radio sources have steep radio spectra and are located within the cluster core, as expected for millisecond pulsars. These three sources have hard X-ray photon indices ($\Gamma=1.3-1.5$) and highly variable X-ray emission, suggesting they are binary millisecond pulsars belonging to the spider class. For the most X-ray luminous of these sources, the redback spider classification is confirmed by its X-ray light curve, which shows an orbital period of 12.32 hr and double peaked structure around X-ray maximum. The likely discovery of bright binary millisecond pulsars in a well-studied cluster like Terzan 5 highlights how deep radio continuum imaging can complement pulsar search and timing observations in finding probable eclipsing systems. The other new radio source in the core has a flat radio spectrum and is X-ray faint ($L_X \approx 2\times 10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$) with a photon index $\Gamma=2.1\pm0.5$, consistent with the properties expected for a quiescent stellar-mass black hole X-ray binary., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. We have identified seven ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) which are coincident with globular cluster candidates (GCs) associated with M87. ULXs in the old GC environment represent a new population of ULXs, and ones likely to be black holes. In this study we perform detailed X-ray spectroscopic followup to seven GC ULXs across a wealth of archival Chandra observations and long time baseline of 16 years. This study brings the total known sample of GC ULXs to 17. Two of these sources show variability in their X-ray luminosity of an order of magnitude over many years, and one of these sources shows intra-observational variability on the scale of hours. While the X-ray spectra of the majority of globular cluster ULXs are best fit by single component models, one of the sources studied in this paper is the second GC ULX to be best fit by a two component model. We compare this new sample of GC ULXs to the previously studied sample, and compare the X-ray and optical properties counterparts across the samples. We find that the clusters that host ULXs in M87 have metallicities from g-z=1.01 to g-z=1.70. The best-fit power-law indices of the X-ray spectra range from Gamma=1.37-2.21, and the best fit inner black-body disk temperatures range from kT=0.56-1.90 keV., Accepted to MNRAS

The evolution of massive stars is influenced by the mass lost to stellar winds over their lifetimes. These winds limit the masses of the stellar remnants (such as black holes) that the stars ultimately produce. We use radio astrometry to refine the distance to the black hole X-ray binary Cygnus X-1, which we find to be $2.22^{+0.18}_{-0.17}$ kiloparsecs. When combined with previous optical data, this implies a black hole mass of $21.2\pm2.2$ solar masses, higher than previous measurements. We present a deep ($\sim 330~\mathrm{ks}$) {\it Chandra} survey of the Galactic globular cluster M30 (NGC 7099). Combining the new Cycle 18 with the previous Cycle 3 observations we report a total of 10 new X-ray point sources within the $1.03$ arcmin half-light radius, compiling an extended X-ray catalogue of a total of 23 sources. We incorporate imaging observations by the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} and the {\it Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array} from the MAVERIC survey to search for optical and radio counterparts to the new and old sources. Two X-ray sources are found to have a radio counterpart, including the known millisecond pulsar PSR J2140$-$2310A, the radio position of which also matches a previously reported faint optical counterpart which is slightly redder than the main sequence. We found optical counterparts to $18$ of the $23$ X-ray sources, identifying $2$ new cataclysmic variables (CVs), $5$ new CV candidates, $2$ new candidates of RS CVn type of active binary (AB), and $2$ new candidates of BY Dra type of AB. The remaining unclassified X-ray sources are likely background active galactic nuclei (AGN), as their number is consistent with the expected number of AGN at our X-ray sensitivity. Using a 16.2 hr radio observation by the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and archival Chandra data, we found $>5\sigma$ radio counterparts to 4 known and 3 new X-ray sources within the half-light radius ($r_\mathrm{h}$) of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6397. The previously suggested millisecond pulsar (MSP) candidate, U18, is a steep-spectrum ($S_\nu \propto \nu^\alpha$; $\alpha=-2.0^{+0.4}_{-0.5}$) radio source with a 5.5 GHz flux density of $54.7\pm 4.3~\mathrm{\mu Jy}$. We argue that U18 is most likely a "hidden" MSP that is continuously hidden by plasma shocked at the collision between the winds from the pulsar and companion star. The nondetection of radio pulsations so far is probably the result of enhanced scattering in this shocked wind. On the other hand, we observed 5.5 GHz flux of the known MSP PSR J1740-5340 (U12) to decrease by a factor of $>2.8$ during epochs of 1.4 GHz eclipse, indicating that the radio flux is absorbed in its shocked wind. If U18 is indeed a pulsar whose pulsations are scattered, we note the contrast with U12's flux decrease in eclipse, which argues for two different eclipse mechanisms at the same radio frequency. In addition to U12 and U18, we also found radio associations for 5 other Chandra X-ray sources, four of which are likely background galaxies. Globular clusters host a variety of lower-luminosity ($L_X 10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Among these moderately bright systems, we discover a new source in NGC 6539 that may be a candidate accreting stellar-mass black hole or a transitional millisecond pulsar. We show that quiescent neutron star LMXBs in globular clusters may spend ~2% of their lifetimes as transitional millisecond pulsars in their active ($L_X>10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$) state. Finally, we identify a substantial under-abundance of bright ($L_X>10^{33}$ erg s$^{-1}$) intermediate polars in globular clusters compared to the Galactic field, in contrast with the literature of the past two decades., 35 pages, 14 figures, ApJ, in press. EXO 1745-248 is a transient neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary that resides in the globular cluster Terzan 5. We studied the transient during its quiescent state using 18 Chandra observations of the cluster acquired between 2003 and 2016. We found an extremely variable source, with a luminosity variation in the 0.5-10 keV energy range of $\sim3$ orders of magnitude (between $3\times10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and $2\times10^{34}$ erg s$^{-1}$) on timescales from years down to only a few days. Using an absorbed power-law model to fit its quiescent spectra, we obtained a typical photon index of $\sim1.4$, indicating that the source is even harder than during outburst and much harder than typical quiescent neutron stars if their quiescent X-ray spectra are also described by a single power-law model. This indicates that EXO 1745-248 is very hard throughout the entire observed X-ray luminosity range. At the highest luminosity, the spectrum fits better when an additional (soft) component is added to the model. All these quiescent properties are likely related to strong variability in the low-level accretion rate in the system. However, its extreme variable behavior is strikingly different from the one observed for other neutron star transients that are thought to still accrete in quiescence. MAXI J1621-501 is the first Swift/XRT Deep Galactic Plane Survey transient that was followed up with a multitude of space missions (NuSTAR, Swift, Chandra, NICER, INTEGRAL, and MAXI) and ground-based observatories (Gemini, IRSF, and ATCA). The source was discovered with MAXI on 2017 October 19 as a new, unidentified transient. Further observations with NuSTAR revealed 2 Type I X-ray bursts, identifying MAXI J1621-501 as a Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) with a neutron star primary. Overall, 24 Type I bursts were detected from the source during a 15 month period. At energies below 10 keV, the source spectrum was best fit with three components: an absorbed blackbody with kT = 2.3 keV, a cutoff power law with index $\Gamma{}$ = 0.7, and an emission line centered on 6.3 keV. Timing analysis of the X-ray persistent emission and burst data has not revealed coherent pulsations from the source or an orbital period. We identified, however, a super-orbital period $\sim{}$78 days in the source X-ray light curve. This period agrees very well with the theoretically predicted radiative precession period of $\sim{}$82 days. We report on X-ray and radio observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary 4U 1543-624 taken in August 2017 during an enhanced accretion episode. We obtained NICER monitoring of the source over a $\sim10$ day period during which target-of-opportunity observations were also conducted with Swift, INTEGRAL, and ATCA. Emission lines were measured in the NICER X-ray spectrum at $\sim0.64$ keV and $\sim6.4$ keV that correspond to O and Fe, respectively. By modeling these line components, we are able to track changes in the accretion disk throughout this period. RZ2109 is the first of several extragalactic globular clusters shown to host an ultraluminous X-ray source. RZ2109 is particularly notable because optical spectroscopy shows it has broad, luminous [OIII] 4959,5007 emission, while also having no detectable hydrogen emission. The X-ray and optical characteristics of the source in RZ2109 make it a good candidate for being a stellar mass black hole accreting from a white dwarf donor (i.e. an ultracompact black hole X-ray binary). In this paper we present optical spectroscopic monitoring of the [OIII]5007 emission line from 2007 to 2018. We find that the flux of the emission line is significantly lower in recent observations from 2016-2018 than it was in earlier observations in 2007-2011. We also explore the behaviour of the emission line shape over time. Both the core and the wings of the emission line decline over time, with some evidence that the core declines more rapidly than the wings. Accretion at super-Eddington rates is expected to be accompanied by strong outflows. Such outflows are observed in Galactic X-ray binaries and extragalactic Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). However, due to their large source distances, ULX outflows are challenging to detect and study in detail. Galactic neutron stars accreting from a Be-star companion at super-Eddington rates show many similarities to ULX pulsars, and therefore offer an alternative approach to study outflows in this accretion regime. Here, we present Chandra high-resolution spectroscopy of such a super-Eddington accreting neutron star, Swift J0243.6+6124, to search for wind outflow signatures during the peak of its 2017/2018 giant outburst. We detect narrow emission features at rest from Ne, Mg, S, Si, and Fe. In addition, we detect a collection of absorption features which can be identified in two ways: either as all Fe transitions at rest (with a possible contribution from Mg), or a combination of three blue-shifted Ne and Mg lines at $\sim 0.22c$, while the remaining lines are at rest. The second scenario would imply an outflow with a velocity similar to those seen in ULXs, including the ULX pulsar NGC 300 ULX-1. This result would also imply that Swift J0243.6+6124 launches both a jet, detected in radio and reported previously, and an ultra-fast wind outflow simultaneously at super-Eddington accretion rates., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables. With the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) we monitored the black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1535--571 over seven epochs from 21 September to 2 October 2017. Using ASKAP observations, we studied the HI absorption spectrum from gas clouds along the line-of-sight and thereby constrained the distance to the source. The maximum negative radial velocities measured from the HI absorption spectra for MAXI J1535--571 and an extragalactic source in the same field of view are $-69\pm4$ km s$^{-1}$ and $-89\pm4$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. This rules out the far kinematic distance ($9.3^{+0.5}_{-0.6}$ kpc), giving a most likely distance of $4.1^{+0.6}_{-0.5}$ kpc, with a strong upper limit of the tangent point at $6.7^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$ kpc. At our preferred distance, the peak unabsorbed luminosity of MAXI J1535--571 was $>78$ per cent of the Eddington luminosity, and shows that the soft-to-hard spectral state transition occurred at the very low luminosity of 1.2 -- 3.4 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ times the Eddington luminosity. We report on observations of black hole Swift J1357.2-0933, a member of the modest population of very faint X-ray transients. This source has previously shown intense dips in the optical lightcurve, a phenomena that has been linked to the existence of a "unique toroidal structure" in the inner region of the disc, seen at a high inclination. Our observations, carried out by the Neil Gehrels Swift and NuSTAR X-ray observatories, do not show the presence of intense dips in the optical light curves. We find that the X-ray light curves do not show any features that would straightforwardly support an edge-on configuration or high inclination configuration of the orbit. This is similar to what was seen in the X-ray observations of the source during its 2011 outburst. Moreover, the broadband spectra were well described with an absorbed power-law model without any signatures of the cut-off at energies above 10 keV, or any reflection from the disc or the putative torus. Thus, the X-ray data do not support the unique obscuring torus scenario proposed for J1357. We also performed a multi-wavelength study using the data of X-ray telescope and Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope aboard Swift, taken during the 4.5 months duration of the 2017 outburst. This is consistent with what was previously inferred for this source. Using the Very Long Baseline Array and the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network we have made a precise measurement of the radio parallax of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI\,J1820+070, providing a model-independent distance to the source. Our parallax measurement of ($0.348\pm0.033$) mas for MAXI J1820+070 translates to a distance of ($2.96\pm0.33$) kpc. This distance implies that the source reached ($15\pm3)\%$ of the Eddington luminosity at the peak of its outburst. Further, we use this distance to refine previous estimates of the jet inclination angle, jet velocity and the mass of the black hole in MAXI J1820+070 to be ($63\pm3)^{\circ}$, ($0.89\pm0.09)c$ and ($9.2\pm1.3) M_{\odot}$, respectively., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Published in MNRAS
