Los aldehídos en el ambiente se encuentran entre la mayoría de los compuestos orgánicos que participan en las reacciones fotoquímicas en la atmósfera, formando principalmente radicales en cantidades significativas. Además, presentan efectos nocivos sobre la salud de los habitantes de las ciudades con atmósferas contaminadas, principalmente compuestos como el formaldehído y el acetaldehído. En el presente trabajo se determinó, durante el 2017, la concentración de siete aldehídos en muestras de aire y agua de lluvia en un área de conservación de Costa Rica, llamada Reserva Biológica Los Cusingos, ubicada en el Pacífico Sur, Pérez Zeledón. Para el muestreo y el análisis de los aldehídos se utilizó el método TO-11A (EPA). El muestreo utilizó con cartuchos de adsorción recubiertos con una disolución de 2,4-dinitrofenilhidracina (2,4-DNFH). Las muestras fueron cuantificadas por medio de un cromatógrafo líquido acoplado a un detector UV-Visible. Las mayores concentraciones de aldehídos en las muestras de aire corresponden a formaldehído (62.2 ± 3.1 μg/m3), acetaldehído (88.1 ± 4.9 μg/m3) y acroleína (102.2 ± 5.2 μg/m3) en un periodo de 4 horas. Se determinó que el heptanal fue el aldehído menos contribuyente a la cantidad de aldehídos totales, al encontrarse por debajo del límite de detección (< LC = 0.015 mg/L). Para las muestras de agua de lluvia, el único aldehído cuantificado fue el formaldehído cuya concentración osciló entre (0.00439 ± 0.0062 a 0.08 ± 0.13) mg/L. Los resultados obtenidos en la muestra de aire sugieren un aumento en la concentración de aldehídos correlacionados con la radiación solar y con la temperatura, sugiriendo como principal contribuyente las reacciones fotoquímicas que se llevan a cabo en el aire con hidrocarburos precursores para la generación de contaminantes secundarios.

This article presents the most relevant results found in the “Licenciatura” graduation research project for the BA in Teaching English offered by the University of Costa Rica, Campus Occidente. The work, entitled “Strengths and Weaknesses in Teaching English Literature in Experimental Bilingual High Schools of the Western Educational Region of Costa Rica: A Study from the Teachers’ Perspectives”, was conducted in 2012 and 2013. 36 EFL teachers participated. This paper presents results on the strengths and weaknesses of teachers’ academic and professional training in light of the implementation of the English literature syllabus of the Costa Rican Ministry of Public Education (known by the acronym MEP in Spanish). Qualitative and quantitative methodologies were used. Interviews were conducted with participants and English advisors and an online survey was also used. Results show that most EFL teachers do not feel trained to deal with the English literature syllabus because teaching literature is not their major, but the MEP has assumed that mastering the language is sufficient for an English teacher to teach literature. Most teachers reject this presupposition as they think that the MEP’S English literature syllabus focuses on literary content rather than using literature to teach and learn English. Teachers assert that there is a discrepancy between their academic training and what the MEP expects them to do.

Introducción: la Macroglobulinemia de Waldenström (MW) es un tipo raro de linfoma de células B caracterizado por la proliferación de células linfoplasmocíticas que secretan altas cantidades de inmunoglobulinas M (IgM) monoclonales. Puede presentarse con una amplia gama de síntomas, entre ellos los derivados del aumento de la viscosidad plasmática. Métodos: reportamos un caso de MW que presentó una trombosis de la vena central de la retina (TVCR) bilateral en el contexto de un síndrome de hiperviscosidad (SHV). El objetivo de este trabajo fue revisar algunos aspectos clínicos de la MW, con especial énfasis en el SHV y la TVCR. Resultados: las manifestaciones clínicas y de laboratorio de la MW son inespecíficas y comunes a otras neoplasias hematológicas. El SHV se produce cuando los niveles de IgM sobrepasan los 3 mg/dL, situación que ocurre en un 15-30% de los pacientes. La TVCR es una complicación grave y rara asociada al SHV, presentándose típicamente como una pérdida de agudeza visual indolora. El fondo de ojo exhibe signos característicos, como tortuosidad venosa y hemorragias retinales hasta la periferia, y la angiografía con fluorosceína y la OCT pueden orientar al diagnóstico y guiar el manejo. El tratamiento incluye la plasmaféresis y tratamientos oftalmológicos basados en agentes antioangiogénicos. Conclusión: la MW es una enfermedad incurable. Sin embargo, es importante sospechar una TVCR en pacientes que debutan con una pérdida de agudeza visual, ya que existen tratamientos efectivos en el manejo de esta complicación.

In this paper, we present CALSAGOS : Clustering ALgorithmS Applied to Galaxies in Overdense Systems which is a PYTHON package developed to select cluster members and to search, find, and identify substructures. CALSAGOS is based on clustering algorithms, and was developed to be used in spectroscopic and photometric samples. To test the performance of CALSAGOS , we use the S-PLUS's mock catalogues, and we found an error of 1–6 per cent on member selection depending on the function that is used. Besides, CALSAGOS has a F 1-score of 0.8, a precision of 85 per cent and a completeness of 100 per cent in the identification of substructures in the outer regions of galaxy clusters (r > r 200). The F 1-score, precision, and completeness of CALSAGOS fall to 0.5, 75, and 40 per cent when we consider all substructure identifications (inner and outer) due to the function that searches, finds, and identifies the substructures works in 2D, and cannot resolve the substructures projected over others. We present a catalogue of 4499 groups and clusters of galaxies from the first data release of the multi-filter (5 broad, 7 narrow) Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS). These groups and clusters are distributed over 273 deg2 in the Stripe 82 region. They are found using the PzWav algorithm, which identifies peaks in galaxy density maps that have been smoothed by a cluster scale difference-of-Gaussians kernel to isolate clusters and groups. Using a simulation-based mock catalogue, we estimate the purity and completeness of cluster detections: at S/N > 3.3, we define a catalogue that is 80 per cent pure and complete in the redshift range 0.1 < z < 0.4, for clusters with M200 > 1014 M⊙. We also assessed the accuracy of the catalogue in terms of central positions and redshifts, finding scatter of σR = 12 kpc and σz = 8.8 × 10−3, respectively. Moreover, less than 1 per cent of the sample suffers from fragmentation or overmerging. The S-PLUS cluster catalogue recovers ∼80 per cent of all known X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich selected clusters in this field. This fraction is very close to the estimated completeness, thus validating the mock data analysis and paving an efficient way to find new groups and clusters of galaxies using data from the ongoing S-PLUS project. When complete, S-PLUS will have surveyed 9300 deg2 of the sky, representing the widest uninterrupted areas with narrow-through-broad multi-band photometry for cluster follow-up studies. This article analyzes Anancy’s cogni- tive and sociohistorical identity beyond the moralistic approach of the western philosophy of being. Instead, Anancy stories are studied as a decolonized expression of an afrodescendant Caribbeanness that struggles to survive in an imperial context. There is placed special emphasis on Anancy and his relationship with other animals of the forest present in the stories collected by a group of Costa Rican researchers. Walter Mignolo’s concept of colonial and imperial differences, the notion of the trickster, Mikael Bakhtin’s carnival, the psychological theories of the id and humor are used to support the analysis. Finally, it is concluded that Anancy stories are the result of resistance but more importantly, they reveal a nontraditional subversion that guarantees hope in a hopeless system. In this sense, Anancy does not accept fatalism as a cognitive structure of his identity; even though, he lives in a fatalistic society.

El presente artículo es resultado de una investigación etnográfica desarrolla con cuatro profesores de inglés que laboran en diferentes colegios rurales de la región de San Ramón, Alajuela, Costa Rica. El objetivo principal de este trabajo es analizar los principios epistemológicos y axiológicos del saber docente en la enseñanza del inglés. Los datos fueron obtenidos mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas y estructuradas aplicadas a los sujetos de investigación, así como mediante observaciones participantes y no participantes. Los resultados evidencian la configuración de cuatro dominios principales: el contenido-técnico, el metodológico, el legal-institucional y el económico. Estos dominios fungen como agentes reguladores y moldeadores de la práctica y del saber docente. La transcendencia de estos dominios del saber demuestra una preocupación fundamental sobre aspectos técnicos lingüísticos y metodológicos, conocimientos administrativos y legales en lo que respecta al valor y ejercicio de la enseñanza y aprendizaje del inglés. Finalmente, el valor y la importancia de enseñar y aprender inglés se percibe exclusivamente en términos económicos como un valor agregado de las habilidades y competencias que un individuo puede ofrecer en el mercado laboral. This article shows the results of an ethnographic research carried with a group of four teachers working in rural high schools from San Ramón, Alajuela, Costa Rica. The main objective is to analyze the constitutive epistemological and axiological elements of the English teacher knowledge of this population. Data were collected through multiple non-participatory class observations, semi and structured interviews. The results evidence four principal areas of knowledge identified as the technical content domain, the methodological domain, the legalinstitutional domain and the economic domain. There is evidenced a huge concern on technical linguistic and methodological matters as well as on the need of administrative and legal considerations to teach and learn English. Finally, the English teaching learning process is valued ad appreciated because it has an apparent economical benefit

This article results from a research project developed in Costa Rica, specifically, in the central western region. Its main objective is of findings that shed light on the socio-historical principles and construction of teacher knowledge of English language teaching. Teacher knowledge is approached as a discursive and everyday life construction whose historical antecedents influence its constitution and perception. Therefore, an analysis of the historical situations that justified the English language teaching in Costa Rica is provided. Also, it is analyzed the way(s) national institutions like the “Ministerio de Educación Pública” as well as the English language teaching major from “Sede de Occidente, Universidad de Costa Rica” have historically assumed and set the principles of teacher knowledge. This study concludes that there have been four main domains regulating the English language teacher knowledge. They are the technical, the institutional, the content and the economic domains. Este artículo es el resultado de un proyecto de investigación realizado en la Región de Occidente de Costa Rica. El principal objetivo es presentar los principios socio-históricos que han constituido el saber docente en la enseñanza de la lengua inglesa. Desde el punto de vista teórico, se aborda (como propuesta) el saber docente como una construcción discursiva y cotidiana donde sus antecedentes históricos determinan su configuración e interpretación. Consecuentemente, se desarrolla un análisis discursivo de las condiciones históricas que justificaron la enseñanza del inglés en Costa Rica así como la forma en que el Ministerio de Educación Pública y la carrera del bachillerato en la enseñanza del inglés ?Universidad de Costa Rica, Sede de Occidente- han percibido y desarrollado el tema del saber docente. Finalmente, se concluye que, en Costa Rica, el saber docente en la enseñanza del inglés esta principalmente construida bajo cuatro aspectos aquí denominados como: dominio técnico, dominio institucional, dominio de contenido y el dominio económico.

The aim of this article is to state the importance teaching materials have in developing a language teaching-learning process based on the principles of the critical thinking pedagogy. From this perspective, this work questions the traditional conceptions and notions related to instruments of access assigned to materials. They are conceived as discursive constructions that can, or cannot, help to empower students with a critical discourse in order to promote a significant change in their attitudes towards the social, political and economical problems they face every day. To support this position, a conceptual study about theoretical assumptions related to the importance and the role teaching materials have in the language teaching-learning process has been carried out. Also, there is a general analysis regarding the relationship among teaching materials, motivation and ideology. Finally, it can be concluded that materials are reproductions and constructors of certain discursive and ideological realities that usually favor the interests of the dominant classes. That is why a critical position about the role teaching materials have is necessary to prevent the reproduction of prejudices and common sense assumptions about language and society. Este artículo se propone esclarecer la importancia y la función que juegan los materiales didácticos ?desde los planteamientos de la pedagogía crítica? en la conformación y desarrollo del proceso de la enseñanza-aprendizaje de una lengua. Más allá de la función instrumentalista que suele asignarse a los materiales didácticos, en el presente trabajo éstos se visualizan como construcciones discursivas que pueden facultar la apropiación del pensamiento basada en el desarrollo de habilidades lingüísticas que reflejen un discurso crítico ante los diferentes reclamos (problemas) históricos a los que estudiantes se ven expuestos dentro y fuera del aula. Para tal propósito, se realiza una revisión conceptual-teórica sobre la importancia y la función que los materiales tienen en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de una lengua. Bajo una perspectiva crítica, se aborda el tema de los materiales didácticos y la construcción de la motivación así como el tema de ideología y materiales didácticos. Finalmente, se concluye que en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de una lengua, los materiales didácticos son reproductores y reproducciones discursivas e ideológicas de ciertas realidades que pueden ofrecer visiones de mundo basadas en los intereses de clases dominantes si no se abordan desde posturas críticas.
