Abstract

Unveiling the dark sector of the Universe is one of the leading efforts in theoretical physics. Among the many models proposed, axions and axion-like particles stand out due to their solid theoretical foundation, capacity to contribute significantly to both dark matter and dark energy, and potential to address the small-scale crisis of $\Lambda$CDM. Moreover, these pseudo-scalar fields couple to the electromagnetic sector through a Chern-Simons parity-violating term, leading to a rotation of the plane of linearly polarized waves, namely cosmic birefringence. We explore the impact of the axion-parameters on anisotropic birefringence and study, for the first time, its cross-correlation with the spatial distribution of galaxies, focusing on ultralight axions with masses $10^{-33}\,{\rm eV}\le m_\phi\le10^{-28}\,{\rm eV}$. Through this novel approach, we investigate the axion-parameter space in the mass $m_\phi$ and initial misalignment angle $\theta_i$, within the framework of early dark energy models, and constrain the axion-photon coupling $g_{\phi\gamma}$ required to achieve unity in the signal-to-noise ratio of the underlying cross-correlation, computed with the instrument specifications of Euclid and forthcoming CMB-polarization data. Our findings reveal that for masses below $10^{-32}\,{\rm eV}$ and initial misalignment angles greater in absolute value than $\pi/4$, the signal-to-noise ratio not only exceeds unity but also surpasses that achievable from the auto-correlation of birefringence alone (up to a factor 7), highlighting the informative potential of this new probe. Additionally, given the late-time evolution of these low-mass axions, the signal stems from the epoch of reionization, providing an excellent tool to single out the birefringence generated during this period., Comment: 19 + 5 pages + references, 15 figures

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. The cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation offers a unique avenue for exploring the early Universe's dynamics and evolution. In this paper, we delve into the fascinating realm of slow-roll inflation, contextualizing the primordial acoustic perturbations as the resonant echoes akin to the iconic sound of Chewbacca from the Star Wars universe. By extrapolating polynomial potentials for these primordial sounds, we illuminate their role in shaping the inflationary landscape. Leveraging this framework, we calculate the scalar spectral index ($n_s$) and tensor-to-scalar ratio ($r$), providing insights into the underlying physics governing the inflationary epoch. Employing a rigorous chi-square ($\chi^2$) analysis, we meticulously scrutinize the Planck data combined with that offered by the BICEP/Keck collaboration to identify the Chewbacca sound profile that best aligns with observational constraints. The treatment landscape of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) has been challenged by the advent of novel classes of drugs, such as B-cell receptor (BCR)-inhibitors and BCL-2 antagonists. In selected high-risk patients, the choice to start allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHCT) or continue these agents is a matter of debate. Furthermore, published data about the impact on the feasibility of alloHCT and the optimal timing of administration are limited. Here we present a case of relapsed TP53 mutated CLL treated with ibrutinib as a bridge to alloHCT, discussing risks and benefits of different treatment options in a “real life” situation.

Abstract

The choice of objective is critical for the performance of an optimal controller. When control requirements vary during operation, e.g. due to changes in the environment with which the system is interacting, these variations should be reflected in the cost function. In this paper we consider the problem of identifying a time dependent cost function from given trajectories. We propose a strategy for explicitly representing time dependency in the cost function, i.e. decomposing it into the product of an unknown time dependent parameter vector and a known state and input dependent vector, modelling the former via a linear combination of trigonometric basis functions. These are incorporated within an inverse optimal control framework that uses the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions for ensuring optimality, and allows for formulating an optimization problem with respect to a finite set of basis function hyperparameters. Results are shown for two systems in simulation and evaluated against state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract

The effectiveness of non-parametric, kernel-based methods for function estimation comes at the price of high computational complexity, which hinders their applicability in adaptive, model-based control. Motivated by approximation techniques based on sparse spectrum Gaussian processes, we focus on models given by regularized trigonometric linear regression. This paper provides an analysis of the performance of such an estimation set-up within the statistical learning framework. In particular, we derive a novel bound for the sample error in finite-dimensional spaces, accounting for noise with potentially unbounded support. Next, we study the approximation error and discuss the bias-variance trade-off as a function of the regularization parameter by combining the two bounds.

Abstract

Mobile manipulation in robotics is challenging due to the need of solving many diverse tasks, such as opening a door or picking-and-placing an object. Typically, a basic first-principles system description of the robot is available, thus motivating the use of model-based controllers. However, the robot dynamics and its interaction with an object are affected by uncertainty, limiting the controller's performance. To tackle this problem, we propose a Bayesian multi-task learning model that uses trigonometric basis functions to identify the error in the dynamics. In this way, data from different but related tasks can be leveraged to provide a descriptive error model that can be efficiently updated online for new, unseen tasks. We combine this learning scheme with a model predictive controller, and extensively test the effectiveness of the proposed approach, including comparisons with available baseline controllers. Abstract

ABSTRACT Carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae represents a major public health issue globally. Isolates with resistance to the newest drugs, like ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA), are increasingly reported. In this study, we analyzed the evolution of KPC-3-producing sequence type (ST) 512 K. pneumoniae strains isolated at three different times (hospitalization days 45, 56, and 78) from the same patient, two of which were observed in a pericholecystic liver abscess. The three K. pneumoniae isolates (295Kp, 304Kp, and hmv-318Kp) from the same patient were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing, whole-genome sequencing, sedimentation assay, biofilm measurement, serum resistance assay, macrophage phagocytosis, and adhesion assays. KPC-producing isolate hmv-318Kp exhibited carbapenem susceptibility, hypermucoviscous (hmv) colony phenotype and CZA resistance. Virulence markers of hypervirulent Klebsiella were absent. Two non-synonymous mutations were identified in the hmv-318Kp genome comparing with isogenic strains: a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) occurred in the pKpQIL plasmid, changing blaKPC-3 in the blaKPC-31 gene variant, conferring CZA resistance; and a second SNP occurred in the wzc gene of the capsular biosynthesis cluster, encoding a tyrosine kinase, resulting in the F557S Wzc protein mutation. The Klebsiella pneumoniae strain exhibiting an hmv phenotype (hmv-Kp) phenotype has been previously associated with amino acid substitutions occurring in the Wzc tyrosin kinase protein. We observed in vivo evolution of the ST512 strain to CZA resistance and acquisition of hypermucoviscosity. The pathogenetic role of the detected Wzc substitution is not fully elucidated, but other Wzc mutations were previously reported in hmv K. pneumoniae. Wzc mutants may be more frequent than expected and an underreported cause of hypermucoviscosity in K. pneumoniae clinical isolates.IMPORTANCEHere we describe the evolution of KPC-3-producing ST512 K. pneumoniae isolated at three different times from the same patient of which the last one, from a biliary abscess, showed CZA resistance by KPC-31 production and manifested hmv colony phenotype. Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hv-Kp) isolates are increasingly reported worldwide. Their hypervirulent traits are associated with the presence of rmpA/A2 genes and an hmv. In this study, we identified an hmv-Kp that lacked the rmpA-D cluster but showed an amino acid substitution in the Wzc tyrosin kinase protein, involved in the capsular biosynthesis. This hmv-Kp strain emerged in vivo and evolved resistance to ceftazidime/avibactam resistance in a liver abscess of a patient. Our findings suggest that wzc mutations may be underreported, making it challenging to distinguish hv-Kp from “classic” K. pneumoniae with an hmv phenotype.

Abstract

BackgroundA sex-based evaluation of prognosis in heart failure (HF) is lacking.Methods and resultsWe analyzed the Metabolic Exercise test data combined with Cardiac and Kidney Indexes (MECKI) score registry, which includes HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) patients. A cross-validation procedure was performed to estimate weights separately for men and women of all MECKI score parameters: left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), hemoglobin, kidney function assessed by Modification of Diet in Renal Disease, blood sodium level, ventilation vs. carbon dioxide production slope, and peak oxygen consumption (peakVO2). The primary outcomes were the composite of all-cause mortality, urgent heart transplant, and implant of a left ventricle assist device. The difference in predictive ability between the native and sex recalibrated MECKI (S-MECKI) was calculated using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve at 2 years and a calibration plot. We retrospectively analyzed 7,900 HFrEF patients included in the MECKI score registry (mean age 61 ± 13 years, 6,456 men/1,444 women, mean LVEF 33% ± 10%, mean peakVO2 56.2% ± 17.6% of predicted) with a median follow-up of 4.05 years (range 1.72–7.47). Our results revealed an unadjusted risk of events that was doubled in men compared to women (9.7 vs. 4.1) and a significant difference in weight between the sexes of most of the parameters included in the MECKI score. S-MECKI showed improved risk classification and accuracy (area under the ROC curve: 0.7893 vs. 0.7799, p = 0.02) due to prognostication improvement in the high-risk settings in both sexes (MECKI score >10 in men and >5 in women).ConclusionsS-MECKI, i.e., the recalibrated MECKI according to sex-specific differences, constitutes a further step in the prognostic assessment of patients with severe HFrEF.

Abstract

As respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine distribution gains traction in Europe and Italy, healthcare workers (HCWs) can strategize about vaccine promotion to increase uptake among patients at risk of RSV consequences, such cardiac patients. This cross-sectional survey investigated the knowledge about and attitude towards RSV and RSV vaccines, and the intention to recommend vaccination within a cardiological hospital in Italy. To explore factors associated with the outcomes of interest, multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted. Of 197 invited HCWs, 78.2% returned the survey. The knowledge about market authorisation for new RSV vaccines for older adults (present in 46.9% of respondents) was significantly associated with the HCWs’ age, education, and previous update on vaccinations. HCWs with a higher educational level and those with a positive attitude towards RSV vaccines safety reported a higher attitude towards the importance of vaccinating people at risk. The willingness of recommending RSV vaccination to patients (70.5% of respondents) was more likely in HCWs who were knowledgeable about market authorisation for RSV vaccines and in physicians. This tempestive research sheds light on current factors influencing the strategies of cardiac HCWs regarding RSV vaccination. The results suggest the need for training events on the protective role of RSV vaccination in cardiac patients.

Abstract

The performance of model-based control techniques strongly depends on the quality of the employed dynamics model. If strong guarantees are desired, it is therefore common to robustly treat all possible sources of uncertainty, such as model inaccuracies or external disturbances. This, however, can result in overly conservative control strategies. In this paper, we present a stochastic model predictive control approach for discrete-time LTI systems subject to bounded parametric uncertainty and potentially unbounded stochastic additive noise. The proposed scheme makes use of homothetic tubes along the prediction horizon for a robust treatment of parametric uncertainty. Stochastic noise is handled by non-conservatively tightening constraints using the concept of probabilistic reachable sets (PRS). In order to accommodate all possible parametric uncertainties, we provide a strategy for generating "robustified" PRS based only on first and second moments of the noise sequence. In the case of quadratic cost functions, and under a further i.i.d. assumption on the noise distribution, we also provide an average asymptotic performance bound for the l2-norm of the closed-loop state. Finally, we demonstrate our scheme on both an illustrative example, and in a building temperature control problem.

Abstract

The search for a particle dark matter signal in terms of radiation produced by dark matter annihilation or decay has to cope with the extreme faintness of the predicted signal and the presence of masking astrophysical backgrounds. It has been shown that using the correlated information between the dark matter distribution in the Universe with the fluctuations of the cosmic radiation fields has the potential to allow setting apart a pure dark matter signal from astrophysical emissions, since spatial fluctuations in the radiation field due to astrophysical sources and dark matter emission have different features. The cross-correlation technique has been proposed and adopted for dark matter studies by looking at dark matter halos (overdensities). In this paper we extend the technique by focusing on the information on dark matter distribution offered by cosmic voids, and by looking specifically at the gamma-ray dark matter emission: we show that, while being underdense and therefore producing a reduced emission as compared to halos, nevertheless in voids the relative size of the cross-correlation signal due to decaying dark matter vs. astrophysical sources is significantly more favourable, producing signal-to-background ratios $S/B$ (even significantly) larger than 1 for decay lifetimes up to $2 \times 10^{30}$ s. This is at variance with the case of halos, where $S/B$ is typically (even much) smaller than 1. We show that forthcoming galaxy surveys such as Euclid combined with future generation gamma-ray detectors with improved specifications have the ability to provide a hint of such a signal with a predicted significance up to $5.7\sigma$ for galaxies and $1.6\sigma$ for the cosmic shear. The bound on the dark matter lifetime attainable exploiting voids is predicted to improve on current bounds in a mass range for the WIMP of $25\div900$ GeV., Comment: 29 + 6 pages + references, 16 figures

Abstract

Summary: Background: Recently, abnormal thyroid function was shown to be common in patients with Takotsubo syndrome (TTS), being classified into “endocrine-type” and “stress-type” responses. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between thyroid homeostasis and TTS in a larger international registry. Methods: In total 288 patients with TTS were enrolled through the GEIST multicentre registry from Germany, Italy and Spain. Thyrotropin (TSH), free T4 (FT4) and free T3 (FT3) concentrations were analysed at admission. Data were collected both retrospectively and prospectively from 2017 onwards. Primary endpoints included in-hospital and all-cause fatality, determined by cluster analysis using an unsupervised machine learning algorithm (k-medoids). Findings: Three clusters were identified, classifying TTS with low (TSLT), high (TSHT) and normal (TSNT) thyroid output, based on TSH and FT4 levels in relation to the median thyroid’s secretory capacity (SPINA-GT). Although TSH and FT4 concentrations were similar among survivors and non-survivors, these clusters were significantly associated with patient outcomes. In the longitudinal Kaplan–Meier analysis including in- and out-of-hospital survival, the prognosis related to concentrations of TSH, FT4, and FT3 as well as SPINA-GT, deiodinase activity (SPINA-GD) and clusters. Patients in the TSHT cluster and with cardiogenic shock had a lower initial left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Interpretation: This study suggests that thyroid hormones may impact the evolution and prognosis of TTS. The findings indicate that thyroid-derived biomarkers may help identify high-risk patients and pave the way for novel personalized and preventive therapeutic options. Abstract

In her well-known essay written in 1984, Maria Chiavacci Leonardi noted that the beatitudes proclaimed at the end of each frame of Purgatory are generally considered by literary critics to be a marginal element in the realm. Her study questioned this type of approach, suggesting it does not allow us to fully understand the reason why Dante chose to insert the “speech on the mountain” in his imaginary path of purification. According to Leonardi, the beatitudes should instead be considered the real backbone of the cantica, and this interpretation leads to analyzing the entire structure and atmosphere of Purgatory from a different point of view, as closely interconnected with the beatitudes. I therefore propose a brief analysis concerning the proclamation of the beatitudes and their relationship with their narrative context, also taking into account the thematic cores of the cantos in which the beatitudes are inserted and suggesting some possible structural implications.

In February 2022, a critically ill patient colonized with a carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae producing KPC-3 and VIM-1 carbapenemases was hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 in the intensive care unit of Policlinico Umberto I hospital in Rome, Italy. During 95 days of hospitalization, ceftazidime/avibactam, meropenem/vaborbactam, and cefiderocol were administered consecutively to treat 3 respiratory tract infections sustained by different bacterial agents. Those therapies altered the resistome of K. pneumoniae sequence type 512 colonizing or infecting the patient during the hospitalization period. In vivo evolution of the K. pneumoniae sequence type 512 resistome occurred through plasmid loss, outer membrane porin alteration, and a nonsense mutation in the cirA siderophore gene, resulting in high levels of cefiderocol resistance. Cross-selection can occur between K. pneumoniae and treatments prescribed for other infective agents. K. pneumoniae can stably colonize a patient, and antimicrobial-selective pressure can promote progressive K. pneumoniae resistome evolution, indicating a substantial public health threat.

Abstract

Learning-based model predictive control has been widely applied in autonomous racing to improve the closed-loop behaviour of vehicles in a data-driven manner. When environmental conditions change, e.g., due to rain, often only the predictive model is adapted, but the controller parameters are kept constant. However, this can lead to suboptimal behaviour. In this paper, we address the problem of data-efficient controller tuning, adapting both the model and objective simultaneously. The key novelty of the proposed approach is that we leverage a learned dynamics model to encode the environmental condition as a so-called context. This insight allows us to employ contextual Bayesian optimization to efficiently transfer knowledge across different environmental conditions. Consequently, we require fewer data to find the optimal controller configuration for each context. The proposed framework is extensively evaluated with more than 3'000 laps driven on an experimental platform with 1:28 scale RC race cars. The results show that our approach successfully optimizes the lap time across different contexts requiring fewer data compared to other approaches based on standard Bayesian optimization.

Carbapenem resistance is a serious public health threat, causing numerous deaths annually primarily due to healthcare-associated infections. To face this menace, surveillance programs in high-risk patients are becoming a widespread practice. Here we report the performance of the combined use of a recently approved commercial multiplex real-time PCR assay (REALQUALITY Carba-Screen kit) with conventional phenotypic screening. In this three-month study, 479 rectal swabs from 309 patients across high-risk units were evaluated by combining the two approaches. Although the molecular assay showed a higher positivity rate than phenotypic screening (7.1% vs. 5%), it should be noted that the molecular method alone would have missed eight carbapenem-resistant isolates, while using only phenotypic screening would not have detected sixteen isolates. This demonstrates the complementary strengths of each method. Our study confirms the need for a combined approach to maximize the possible clinical impact of this kind of screening, ensuring a more comprehensive detection of resistant strains.

Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar a influência dos processos de extração arraste de vapor (S1) e enzimático (S2) sobre a composição polifenólica de sucos de uva das variedades Bordô, Concord e BRS Violeta produzidos na região do Vale do Rio do Peixe-SC. Foram identificados e quantificados 12 compostos fenólicos por cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência com detector de arranjo de diodos (CLAE-DAD), que diferiram sua concentração de acordo com a variedade e sistema de extração. A partir de análises de componentes principais observou-se que ‘BRS Violeta’ apresentou forte correlação com os ácidos cafeico e 4-hidroxibenzóico, bem como, com catequina e tirosol e a soma dos compostos fenólicos. ‘Bordô’ no S1 e S2 apresentaram a maior concentração para t-resveratrol e ácido vanílico. ‘Concord’ S1 e S2, apresentaram as menores concentrações de fenóis. A variedade foi determinante para a concentração final de cada composto fenólico, devido aos determinantes genéticos e propriedades tecnológicas. Os sistemas de extração influenciam na composição fenólica dos sucos, no entanto, o impacto sobre cada composto específico foi diferente em cada variedade.

Background Neurological disorders as a risk factor for Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) are not well characterized. The aim of the study was to evaluate TTS‐associated neurological phenotypes and outcome. Methods and Results Patients with TTS enrolled in the international multicenter GEIST (German Italian Spanish Takotsubo) registry were analyzed. Prevalence, clinical characteristics, and short‐ and long‐term outcomes of patients with TTS were recorded. A subgroup analysis of the 5 most represented neurological disorders was performed. In total, 400 (17%) of 2301 patients had neurological disorders. The most represented neurological conditions were previous cerebrovascular events (39%), followed by neurodegenerative disorders (30.7%), migraine (10%), epilepsy (9.5%), and brain tumors (5%). Abstract

Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) is characterized by a transient left ventricular systolic dysfunction, burdened by significant acute and long-term mortality and morbidity. The prognosis of TTS, especially in the long-term, is influenced by both non-cardiovascular (non-CV) and CV comorbidities, among which cancer is one of the most common. The presence of a malignancy is proven to be associated with higher mortality in TTS. Moreover, a number of anticancer treatments has been reported to possibly cause TTS as a form of cardiotoxicity, even though clearcut associations are lacking. The aim of this narrative review is to sum up contemporary knowledge on the association of cancer and TTS, addressing unmet needs and practical implications. The importance of a close collaboration between cardiologists and oncologists is herein highlighted, both to allow an adequate management of the acute TTS phase, and to actively and safely return to the oncologic management once the acute setting is resolved.

Abstract

Autotransplantation is a successful technique to replace compromised teeth. This study presents a computer-guided surgical approach for preparing the receiving socket for a mature mandibular third molar donor tooth with a wait-and-see approach instead of prophylactic endodontic treatment. A 42-year-old woman developed root resorption of tooth 3.7. Extraction of 3.7 and autotransplantation of 3.8 was planned, following a 6-week orthodontic phase for periodontal ligament activation and teeth mobilization. Due to the different root morphology between the compromised and donor teeth and the high mandibular bone density, the receiving socket preparation was performed using guided surgery templates. Two surgical splints were designed with a surgical planning software. Tooth 3.7 was extracted, the recipient site was guided-milled, and tooth 3.8 was transplanted into the new socket in approximately one second of extra-alveolar time. The rapidity of the extra-alveolar time facilitated complete healing without resorting to root canal treatment. Five-year radiological control does not show any periapical lesion or root resorption. The surgical procedure for tooth autotransplantation is fundamental: it must be as atraumatic as possible to preserve the periodontal ligament of the tooth and the receiving socket, and the dentist must minimize the extra-alveolar time. Guided surgery is a reliable solution to combine all these aspects.

ABSTRACT: Objectives: Little is known regarding outcomes and optimal therapeutic regimens of infections caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) resistant to ceftazidime/avibactam (CZA) and susceptible to meropenem (MEM). Although susceptible to MEM in vitro, the possibility of developing MEM resistance overtime is a concern. Synergistic activity of FOS-based combinations was evaluated by gradient strip-agar diffusion method. The emergence of in vitro MEM resistance was also tested. Results: Eleven patients were included: eight with infection [four with ventilator-associated pneumonia and four with bloodstream infections] and three with colonization. Previous therapy with CZA was administered to all patients (with a mean cumulative duration of 23 days). All subjects with infection received meropenem, in monotherapy (n = 4) or with amikacin (n = 2) or fosfomycin (n = 2), and achieved clinical cure. A new CZA-susceptible and MEM-resistant KPC-Kp strain was subsequently isolated in three patients (27.3%). Meropenem/vaborbactam (MVB) showed high in vitro activity, while FOS+MEM combination was synergistic in 40% of cases. In vitro resistance to MEM was observed with maintenance of CZA resistance. Conclusions: Detection of KPC variants may occur within the same patient, especially if CZA has been previously administered. Although clinical success has been obtained with carbapenems, the emergence of MEM resistance is a concern. Fosfomycin plus meropenem is synergistic and may be a valuable combination option for KPC variants, while MVB may be considered in monotherapy. The detection of KPC variants in an endemic setting for KPC-Kp represents a worryingly emerging condition. The optimal therapeutic approach is still unknown and the development of meropenem resistance is of concern, which may lead to therapeutic failure in clinical practice. In these cases, the addition of fosfomycin to meropenem, or a more potent antibiotic, such as meropenem/vaborbactam, may be valuable therapeutic options.

Abstract

Data availability has dramatically increased in recent years, driving model-based control methods to exploit learning techniques for improving the system description, and thus control performance. Two key factors that hinder the practical applicability of learning methods in control are their high computational complexity and limited generalization capabilities to unseen conditions. Meta-learning is a powerful tool that enables efficient learning across a finite set of related tasks, easing adaptation to new unseen tasks. This paper makes use of a meta-learning approach for adaptive model predictive control, by learning a system model that leverages data from previous related tasks, while enabling fast fine-tuning to the current task during closed-loop operation. The dynamics is modeled via Gaussian process regression and, building on the Karhunen-Lo{\`e}ve expansion, can be approximately reformulated as a finite linear combination of kernel eigenfunctions. Using data collected over a set of tasks, the eigenfunction hyperparameters are optimized in a meta-training phase by maximizing a variational bound for the log-marginal likelihood. During meta-testing, the eigenfunctions are fixed, so that only the linear parameters are adapted to the new unseen task in an online adaptive fashion via Bayesian linear regression, providing a simple and efficient inference scheme. Simulation results are provided for autonomous racing with miniature race cars adapting to unseen road conditions.
