The DISCOVERER project commenced in 2017 with the aim to advance the development of key technologies to enable the commercially viable, sustained operation of satellites in very low Earth orbits (VLEO). Funded by the European Commission through Horizon 2020, the project ends this month. This paper presents an overview of the key achievements and current status of the project. The project set out to advance the development of, and demonstrate, several technologies with the long-term aim of enabling the commercial use of VLEO. These technologies include: 1. aerodynamic materials which encourage specular scattering of the incoming flow to minimise drag and increase the performance of aerodynamic surfaces in the highly rarefied flows experienced in VLEO 2. aerodynamic attitude control methods to compensate for the dynamic flow environment, especially lower in the VLEO altitude range 3. atmosphere breathing electric propulsion (ABEP), combining an optimised atmospheric intake with advanced RF Helicon-based plasma thruster, for drag compensation DISCOVERER’s test satellite, the Satellite for Orbital Aerodynamics Research or SOAR, was deployed from the International Space Station in June 2021 and re-entered the atmosphere in March 2022. The primary aim was to measure the induced drag and lift on different aerodynamic materials candidates in VLEO by exposing panels, coated in various novel and control materials, to the flow at different orientations whilst observing the induced attitude and orbit perturbations produced. Early analysis of the results from the mission shows promising results for the novel materials developed as part of the project. Parallel studies on the long-term survivability of these materials to the space environment have been on-going through exposure tests on the exterior of the International Space Station through the MISSE programme. The project has also been developing a ground-based facility, the Rarefied Orbital Aerodynamics Research facility, to characterise the gas surface interaction properties of materials to atomic oxygen at orbital velocities. Characterisation of the facility itself is on-going. In support of ABEP technology, the experimental development and characterisation of an RF Helicon-based plasma thruster has been on-going, along with detailed computational modelling of aerodynamic intakes. Whilst the thruster has already been operated, current work focusses on the characterisation of its performance. Finally, work to place these technological developments into context has also been progressed. On overview of the overall achievements in this area is provided, including business modelling of the VLEO market ecosystem, which identifies the enormous market potential for VLEO missions. Para superar las limitaciones de la metodología tradicional en la enseñanza de AutoCAD, la Unidad Docente de Expresión Gráfica de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid está llevando a cabo un Proyecto de Innovación Educativa para implementar una metodología de Aula Invertida (AI) con el apoyo de vídeos educativos. En este trabajo se presentan los resultados de una primera aplicación práctica de la metodología de AI llevada a cabo durante el curso 2016/2017 sobre el tema “La impresión en AutoCAD”. La aplicación de la metodología ha incluido el empleo de un grupo de control y la realización de una prueba objetiva sobre el uso de AutoCAD, la cual ha supuesto un reto organizativo para la Unidad Docente. Los resultados del estudio muestran un mejor rendimiento de los alumnos que han empleado AI. Sin embargo, esta mejora no parece deberse directamente al AI como técnica de enseñanza sino a su aspecto motivador que incide de manera general en el rendimiento de los alumnos.

This paper considers the problem of estimating the population proportion of a categorical variable using the calibration framework. Different situations are explored according to the level of auxiliary information available and the theoretical properties are investigated. A new class of estimator based upon the proposed calibration estimators is also defined, and the optimal estimator in the class, in the sense of minimal variance, is derived. Finally, an estimator of the population proportion, under new calibration conditions, is defined. Simulation studies are considered to evaluate the performance of the proposed calibration estimators via the empirical relative bias and the empirical relative efficiency, and favourable results are achieved. El artículo considera el problema de la estimación de la proporción poblacional de una variable categórica usando como marco de trabajo la calibración. Se exploran diferentes situaciones de acuerdo con la información auxiliar disponible y se investigan las propiedades teóricas. Una nueva clase de estimadores basada en los estimadores de calibración propuestos también es definida y el estimador óptimo en la clase, en el sentido de varianza mínima, es obtenido. Finalmente, un estimador de la proporción poblacional, bajo nuevas condiciones de calibración es también propuesto. Estudios de simulación para evaluar el comportamiento de los estimadores calibrados propuestos a través del sesgo relativo empírico y de la eficiencia relativa empírica son incluidos, obteniéndose resultados satisfactorios.

We consider estimation techniques from dual frame surveys in the case of estimation of proportions when the variable of interest has multinomial outcomes. We propose to describe the joint distribution of the class indicators by a multinomial logistic model. Logistic generalized regression estimators and model calibration estimators are introduced for class frequencies in a population. Theoretical asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are shown and discussed. Monte Carlo experiments are also carried out to compare the efficiency of the proposed procedures for finite size samples and in the presence of different sets of auxiliary variables. The simulation studies indicate that the multinomial logistic formulation yields better results than the classical estimators that implicitly assume individual linear models for the variables. The proposed methods are also applied in an attitude survey.

El presente Trabajo de Fin de Master va a describir la planificación dietética de 2 deportistas practicantes de tenis y fútbol respectivamente. Con la presentación de estos 2 casos, se pretende dar una visión de cómo funciona el Servicio de Nutrición Deportiva de la UMH a la hora de diseñar las dietas de los numerosos deportistas que solicitan sus servicios. Se mostrarán los protocolos de recogida e interpretación de datos y la elaboración de los informes finales conjuntamente con el diseño de la dieta y las recomendaciones nutricionales. Todo esto se ha realizado utilizando un programa informático diseñado por el Dr Néstor Vicente Salar (nutricionista del servicio) en colaboración con la empresa ServiTux
