Abstract: The Single Aperture Large Telescope for Universe Studies (SALTUS) is a mission concept for a far-infrared observatory developed under the recent Astrophysics Probe Explorer opportunity from NASA. The enabling element of the program is a 14 m diameter inflatable primary mirror, M1. Due to its importance to SALTUS and potentially other space observatories, this paper focuses entirely on M1. We present a historical overview of inflatable systems, illustrating that M1 is the logical next step in the evolution of such systems. The process of design and manufacture is addressed. We examine how M1 performs in its environment in terms of operating temperature, interaction with the solar wind, and shape change due to non-penetrating particles. We investigate the longevity of the inflatant in detail and show it meets mission lifetime requirements with ample margin and discuss the development and testing to realize the flight M1., Comment: Submitted to the J. Abstract: We describe the space observatory architecture and mission design of the SALTUS mission, a NASA Astrophysics Probe Explorer concept. SALTUS will address key far-infrared science using a 14-m diameter <45 K primary reflector (M1) and will provide unprecedented levels of spectral sensitivity for planet, solar system, and galactic evolution studies, and cosmic origins. Drawing from Northrop Grumman's extensive NASA mission heritage, the observatory flight system is based on the LEOStar-3 spacecraft platform to carry the SALTUS Payload. The Payload is comprised of the inflation control system (ICS), Sunshield Module (SM), Cold Corrector Module (CCM), Warm Instrument Electronics Module, and Primary Reflector Module (PRM). The 14-m M1 is an off-axis inflatable membrane radiatively cooled by a two-layer sunshield (~1,000 m2 per layer). The CCM corrects for residual aberration from M1 and delivers a focused beam to two instruments - High Resolution Receiver (HiRX) and SAFARI-Lite. The CCM and PRM reside atop a truss-based composite deck which also provides a platform for the attitude control system. The 5-year mission lifetime is driven by a two-consumable architecture: the propellant system and the ICS. The Core Interface Module (CIM), a multi-faceted composite truss structure, provides a load path with high stiffness, mechanical attachment, and thermal separation between the Payload and spacecraft. The SM attaches outside the CIM with its aft end integrating directly to the bus. The spacecraft maintains an attitude off M1's boresight with respect to the Sun line to facilitate the <45 K thermal environment. SALTUS will reside in a Sun-Earth halo L2 orbit with a maximum Earth slant range of 1.8 million km thereby reducing orbit transfer delta-v. The instantaneous field of regard provides two continuous 20-deg viewing zones around the ecliptic poles resulting in full sky coverage in six months., Comment: Submitted to the J. Astron. Telesc. Abstract: Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. 4. A Predictive Model for Micrometeoroid Damage to Gossamer Structures

Abstract: A typical inflatable reflector for space application consists of two thin membranes with a parabolic shape. It is critical to understand the interaction of the inflatable and the micrometeoroid environment to which it is exposed. This interaction leads to a series of penetrations of the inflatable membrane on entrance and exit of the impacting particle, creating a pathway for gas escape. To increase the fidelity of the damage expected, we examine the literature for descriptions of micrometeoroid fragmentation and present a theoretical formulation for the damage caused by an impacting particle to the entrance and exit membranes. This theory is compared to an initial set of hyper-velocity tests for micrometeoroid-sized particles on thin film membranes. We use the results of these tests to produce a predictive model. This model is applied to estimate the damage rate near the 1 AU location and output predictions for the effectiveness of a micrometeoroid shield to reduce the damage on the lenticular and effectively optimize its lifetime. Lastly, we apply the kinetic theory of gasses to develop expressions for the expenditure of gas over a specified mission lifetime due to penetrations. Although this paper examines the specific case of an inflated lenticular protected by extra membrane layers, our predictive model can be applied for any gossamer structure composed of polyimide membranes., Comment: 33 pages, 23 figures

Abstract: The Orbiting Astronomical Satellite for Investigating Stellar Systems (OASIS) is a proposed space telescope with a 14 m inflatable primary reflector that will perform high spectral resolution observations at terahertz frequencies with heterodyne receivers. The telescope consists of an inflatable metallized polymer membrane that serves as the primary antenna, followed by aberration correction optics, and a scanner that enables a 0.1 degrees Field of Regards while achieving diffraction limited performance over wavelength range from 63 to 660 {\mu}m. Here the parametric solution space of the OASIS inflatable telescope design is systematically investigated by establishing analytical relations among figure of merits including 1st order geometrical photon collection area and the size of correction optics. The 1st order solution was further optimized by ray-trace code by incorporating numerically calculated mirror shape with pre-formed membrane gores. Abstract: The addition of an external starshade to the {\it Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope} will enable the direct imaging of Earth-radius planets orbiting at $\sim$1 AU. Classification of any detected planets as Earth-like requires both spectroscopy to characterize their atmospheres and multi-epoch imaging to trace their orbits. We consider here the ability of the Starshade Rendezvous Probe to constrain the orbits of directly imaged Earth-like planets. The target list for this proposed mission consists of the 16 nearby stars best suited for direct imaging. The field of regard for a starshade mission is constrained by solar exclusion angles, resulting in four observing windows during a two-year mission. We find that for habitable-zone planetary orbits that are detected at least three times during the four viewing opportunities, their semi-major axes are measured with a median precision of 7 mas, or a median fractional precision of 3\%. Habitable-zone planets can be correctly identified as such 96.7\% of the time, with a false positive rate of 2.8\%. If a more conservative criteria is used for habitable-zone classification (95\% probability), the false positive rate drops close to zero, but with only 81\% of the truly Earth-like planets correctly classified as residing in the habitable zone.

Abstract: Launching a starshade to rendezvous with the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope would provide the first opportunity to directly image the habitable zones of nearby sunlike stars in the coming decade. A report on the science and feasibility of such a mission was recently submitted to NASA as a probe study concept. The driving objective of the concept is to determine whether Earth-like exoplanets exist in the habitable zones of the nearest sunlike stars and have biosignature gases in their atmospheres. With the sensitivity provided by this telescope, it is possible to measure the brightness of zodiacal dust disks around the nearest sunlike stars and establish how their population compares to our own. In addition, known gas-giant exoplanets can be targeted to measure their atmospheric metallicity and thereby determine if the correlation with planet mass follows the trend observed in the Solar System and hinted at by exoplanet transit spectroscopy data. In this paper we provide the details of the calculations used to estimate the sensitivity of Roman with a starshade and describe the publicly available Python-based source code used to make these calculations. Given the fixed capability of Roman and the constrained observing windows inherent for the starshade, we calculate the sensitivity of the combined observatory to detect these three types of targets and we present an overall observing strategy that enables us to achieve these objectives., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems (JATIS)

Abstract: Lynx, one of the four strategic mission concepts under study for the 2020 Astrophysics Decadal Survey, provides leaps in capability over previous and planned x-ray missions and provides synergistic observations in the 2030s to a multitude of space- and ground-based observatories across all wavelengths. Lynx provides orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity, on-axis subarcsecond imaging with arcsecond angular resolution over a large field of view, and high-resolution spectroscopy for point-like and extended sources in the 0.2- to 10-keV range. The Lynx architecture enables a broad range of unique and compelling science to be carried out mainly through a General Observer Program. This program is envisioned to include detecting the very first seed black holes, revealing the high-energy drivers of galaxy formation and evolution, and characterizing the mechanisms that govern stellar evolution and stellar ecosystems. The Lynx optics and science instruments are carefully designed to optimize the science capability and, when combined, form an exciting architecture that utilizes relatively mature technologies for a cost that is compatible with the projected NASA Astrophysics budget.

Abstract: The influence of birefringence on rays entering and exiting a non-isotropic medium is a complex process that depends on its dielectric tensor, the orientation and geometry of the medium, the surrounding material, and the inclination of the incident ray. Thus, when aiming for a calculation of the effects, many parameters need to be taken into account while simplifications are generally not applicable. Moreover, the complexity of the general issue makes it almost impossible to find an analytical solution for backward calculations of stress-birefringence from polarization measurements. In this paper, a report is given on the formulation of a birefringence ray-tracing program in Python for the convenient evaluation of optical effects inside uniaxial crystals under stress. The aim thereby is to have an easily applicable tool that can be used in interferometer commissioning for current and future gravitational-wave detectors. Results from test simulations using realistic parameters for a sapphire mirror as used in the gravitational-wave detector KAGRA are implemented and show the capabilities of this tool. Abstract: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Backplane Stability Test Article (BSTA) was developed to demonstrate large precision cryogenic structures' technology readiness for use in the JWST. The thermal stability of the BSTA was measured at cryogenic temperatures at the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) X-Ray Calibration Facility (XRCF) and included nearly continuous measurements over a six-week period in the summer of 2006 covering the temperature range from ambient down to 30 Kusing a spatially phase-shifted digital speckle pattern interferometer (SPS-DSPI). The BSTA is a full size, one-sixth section of the JWST primary mirror backplane assembly (PMBA). The BSTA, measuring almost 3 m across, contains most of the prominent structural elements of the backplane and is to our knowledge the largest structure ever measured with SPS-DSPI at cryogenic conditions. The SPS-DSPI measured rigid body motion and deformations of BSTA to nanometer-level accuracy. The SPS-DSPI was developed specifically for the purposes of this test and other tests of large cryogenic structures for JWST. OCIS codes: 120.6160, 100.0100.
