1. Statistical analysis of IUVB values in Mexico City from 2000 to 2022

Abstract: The solar radiation are electromagnetic waves, composed of infrared, visible spectrum and ultraviolet. The infrared component is the cause of thermal energy, the visible spectrum allows to see and the ultraviolet component is the most energetic part and dangerous for the human body (skin and eyes). The ultraviolet rays are divided in a wavelength range, in three parts; called UVA (100-280 nm), UVB (280-315 nm) and UVC (315-400 nm). The UVC are the most energetic (followed by the UVB rays ), however are stopped in the ozone layer. In this work it shown a statistical analysis of the UVB index measured by five station in Mexico City, from the years 2000 to 2022. Through a Gaussian fit distribution, it was found that the range when the IUVB value exceeds the value of seven, which is from 11:00 to 16:00, having an average mean value of 13:09 hrs. $\pm$ 4 min. i.e. the time at which the UVB index reaches its maximum value. This occurs in the months from February to October. More than 80% of radiation is for UVB values less than 7 and less than the remaining 20% is for IUVB values greater than 7. Finally, it was possible to observe that the mean value per year, reaches its maximum when the solar cycles occurs, which was in the years 2003 and 2013.

Abstract: Aim Ecological and anthropogenic factors shift the abundances of dominant and rare tree species within local forest communities, thus affecting species composition and ecosystem functioning. To inform forest and conservation management it is important to understand the drivers of dominance and rarity in local tree communities. We answer the following research questions: (1) What are the patterns of dominance and rarity in tree communities? (2) Which ecological and anthropogenic factors predict these patterns? And (3) what is the extinction risk of locally dominant and rare tree species? Location Global. Time period 1990–2017. Major taxa studied Trees. Methods We used 1.2 million forest plots and quantified local tree dominance as the relative plot basal area of the single most dominant species and local rarity as the percentage of species that contribute together to the least 10% of plot basal area. We mapped global community dominance and rarity using machine learning models and evaluated the ecological and anthropogenic predictors with linear models. Extinction risk, for example threatened status, of geographically widespread dominant and rare species was evaluated. Results Community dominance and rarity show contrasting latitudinal trends, with boreal forests having high levels of dominance and tropical forests having high levels of rarity. Increasing annual precipitation reduces community dominance, probably because precipitation is related to an increase in tree density and richness. Additionally, stand age is positively related to community dominance, due to stem diameter increase of the most dominant species. Surprisingly, we find that locally dominant and rare species, which are geographically widespread in our data, have an equally high rate of elevated extinction due to declining populations through large-scale land degradation. Abstract: The emergence of alternative stable states in forest systems has significant implications for the functioning and structure of the terrestrial biosphere, yet empirical evidence remains scarce. Here, we combine global forest biodiversity observations and simulations to test for alternative stable states in the presence of evergreen and deciduous forest types. We reveal a bimodal distribution of forest leaf types across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere that cannot be explained by the environment alone, suggesting signatures of alternative forest states. Moreover, we empirically demonstrate the existence of positive feedbacks in tree growth, recruitment and mortality, with trees having 4–43% higher growth rates, 14–17% higher survival rates and 4–7 times higher recruitment rates when they are surrounded by trees of their own leaf type. Simulations show that the observed positive feedbacks are necessary and sufficient to generate alternative forest states, which also lead to dependency on history (hysteresis) during ecosystem transition from evergreen to deciduous forests and vice versa. We identify hotspots of bistable forest types in evergreen-deciduous ecotones, which are likely driven by soil-related positive feedbacks. These findings are integral to predicting the distribution of forest biomes, and aid to our understanding of biodiversity, carbon turnover, and terrestrial climate feedbacks.

Abstract: In a flat Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker background, a scheme of dark matter-dark energy interaction is studied considering a holographic Ricci-like model for the dark energy. Without giving a priori some specific model for the interaction function, we show that this function can experience a change of sign during the cosmic evolution. Abstract: Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees. To address these gaps, we conducted a global, ground-sourced assessment of forest leaf-type variation by integrating forest inventory data with comprehensive leaf form (broadleaf vs needle-leaf) and habit (evergreen vs deciduous) records. We found that global variation in leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Given these relationships, we estimate that 38% of global tree individuals are needle-leaved evergreen, 29% are broadleaved evergreen, 27% are broadleaved deciduous and 5% are needle-leaved deciduous. The aboveground biomass distribution among these tree types is approximately 21% (126.4 Gt), 54% (335.7 Gt), 22% (136.2 Gt) and 3% (18.7 Gt), respectively. We further project that, depending on future emissions pathways, 17-34% of forested areas will experience climate conditions by the end of the century that currently support a different forest type, highlighting the intensification of climatic stress on existing forests. By quantifying the distribution of tree leaf types and their corresponding biomass, and identifying regions where climate change will exert greatest pressure on current leaf types, our results can help improve predictions of future terrestrial ecosystem functioning and carbon cycling.

Abstract: Forests are a substantial terrestrial carbon sink, but anthropogenic changes in land use and climate have considerably reduced the scale of this system1. Remote-sensing estimates to quantify carbon losses from global forests2–5 are characterized by considerable uncertainty and we lack a comprehensive ground-sourced evaluation to benchmark these estimates. Here we combine several ground-sourced6 and satellite-derived approaches2,7,8 to evaluate the scale of the global forest carbon potential outside agricultural and urban lands. Despite regional variation, the predictions demonstrated remarkable consistency at a global scale, with only a 12% difference between the ground-sourced and satellite-derived estimates. At present, global forest carbon storage is markedly under the natural potential, with a total deficit of 226 Gt (model range = 151–363 Gt) in areas with low human footprint. Most (61%, 139 Gt C) of this potential is in areas with existing forests, in which ecosystem protection can allow forests to recover to maturity. The remaining 39% (87 Gt C) of potential lies in regions in which forests have been removed or fragmented. Although forests cannot be a substitute for emissions reductions, our results support the idea2,3,9 that the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of diverse forests offer valuable contributions to meeting global climate and biodiversity targets.

Abstract: Determining the drivers of non-native plant invasions is critical for managing native ecosystems and limiting the spread of invasive species1,2. Tree invasions in particular have been relatively overlooked, even though they have the potential to transform ecosystems and economies3,4. Here, leveraging global tree databases5-7, we explore how the phylogenetic and functional diversity of native tree communities, human pressure and the environment influence the establishment of non-native tree species and the subsequent invasion severity. We find that anthropogenic factors are key to predicting whether a location is invaded, but that invasion severity is underpinned by native diversity, with higher diversity predicting lower invasion severity. Temperature and precipitation emerge as strong predictors of invasion strategy, with non-native species invading successfully when they are similar to the native community in cold or dry extremes. Yet, despite the influence of these ecological forces in determining invasion strategy, we find evidence that these patterns can be obscured by human activity, with lower ecological signal in areas with higher proximity to shipping ports. Our global perspective of non-native tree invasion highlights that human drivers influence non-native tree presence, and that native phylogenetic and functional diversity have a critical role in the establishment and spread of subsequent invasions.

Abstract: 1. Biodiversity is an important component of natural ecosystems, with higher species richness often correlating with an increase in ecosystem productivity. Yet, this relationship varies substantially across environments, typically becoming less pronounced at high levels of species richness. However, species richness alone cannot reflect all important properties of a community, including community evenness, which may mediate the relationship between biodiversity and productivity. If the evenness of a community correlates negatively with richness across forests globally, then a greater number of species may not always increase overall diversity and productivity of the system. Theoretical work and local empirical studies have shown that the effect of evenness on ecosystem functioning may be especially strong at high richness levels, yet the consistency of this remains untested at a global scale. 2. Here, we used a dataset of forests from across the globe, which includes composition, biomass accumulation and net primary productivity, to explore whether productivity correlates with community evenness and richness in a way that evenness appears to buffer the effect of richness. Specifically, we evaluated whether low levels of evenness in speciose communities correlate with the attenuation of the richness–productivity relationship. 3. We found that tree species richness and evenness are negatively correlated across forests globally, with highly speciose forests typically comprising a few dominant and many rare species. Furthermore, we found that the correlation between diversity and productivity changes with evenness: at low richness, uneven communities are more productive, while at high richness, even communities are more productive. 4. Synthesis. Abstract: Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, but the estimated species richness is very much debated. Here, we apply an ensemble of parametric estimators and a novel technique that includes conspecific spatial aggregation to an extended database of forest plots with up-to-date taxonomy. We show that the species abundance distribution of Amazonia is best approximated by a logseries with aggregated individuals, where aggregation increases with rarity. By averaging several methods to estimate total richness, we confirm that over 15,000 tree species are expected to occur in Amazonia. We also show that using ten times the number of plots would result in an increase to just ~50% of those 15,000 estimated species. To get a more complete sample of all tree species, rigorous field campaigns may be needed but the number of trees in Amazonia will remain an estimate for years to come. © 2020, The Author(s).

Abstract: To draw the balance of anthropogenic 129I input into European soils, the concentrations of 129I and 127I in seven soils from Lower Saxony were analyzed down to a depth of 250 cm. In comparison with pre-nuclear soils and Ukrainian soils, we detected a significant anthropogenic input of 129I. Considering the different time periods for the input of 129I and 127I it was possible to assess the dynamics of sorption processes which dominate migration and accumulation. Anthropogenic 129I was successfully used as a tracer for a clarification of the migration processes of trace elements in soils.

Abstract: The identity of the dominant root-associated microbial symbionts in a forest determines the ability of trees to access limiting nutrients from atmospheric or soil pools 1,2 , sequester carbon 3,4 and withstand the effects of climate change 5,6 . Characterizing the global distribution of these symbioses and identifying the factors that control this distribution are thus integral to understanding the present and future functioning of forest ecosystems. Here we generate a spatially explicit global map of the symbiotic status of forests, using a database of over 1.1 million forest inventory plots that collectively contain over 28,000 tree species. Our analyses indicate that climate variables—in particular, climatically controlled variation in the rate of decomposition—are the primary drivers of the global distribution of major symbioses. We estimate that ectomycorrhizal trees, which represent only 2% of all plant species 7 , constitute approximately 60% of tree stems on Earth. Ectomycorrhizal symbiosis dominates forests in which seasonally cold and dry climates inhibit decomposition, and is the predominant form of symbiosis at high latitudes and elevation. By contrast, arbuscular mycorrhizal trees dominate in aseasonal, warm tropical forests, and occur with ectomycorrhizal trees in temperate biomes in which seasonally warm-and-wet climates enhance decomposition. Continental transitions between forests dominated by ectomycorrhizal or arbuscular mycorrhizal trees occur relatively abruptly along climate-driven decomposition gradients; these transitions are probably caused by positive feedback effects between plants and microorganisms. Symbiotic nitrogen fixers—which are insensitive to climatic controls on decomposition (compared with mycorrhizal fungi)—are most abundant in arid biomes with alkaline soils and high maximum temperatures. Abstract: Tropical forests are known for their high diversity. Yet, forest patches do occur in the tropics where a single tree species is dominant. Such “monodominant” forests are known from all of the main tropical regions. For Amazonia, we sampled the occurrence of monodominance in a massive, basin-wide database of forest-inventory plots from the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ATDN). Utilizing a simple defining metric of at least half of the trees ≥ 10 cm diameter belonging to one species, we found only a few occurrences of monodominance in Amazonia, and the phenomenon was not significantly linked to previously hypothesized life history traits such wood density, seed mass, ectomycorrhizal associations, or Rhizobium nodulation. In our analysis, coppicing (the formation of sprouts at the base of the tree or on roots) was the only trait significantly linked to monodominance. While at specific locales coppicing or ectomycorrhizal associations may confer a considerable advantage to a tree species and lead to its monodominance, very few species have these traits. Mining of the ATDN dataset suggests that monodominance is quite rare in Amazonia, and may be linked primarily to edaphic factors.

Abstract: Introduction: Voluntary muscle activity, including swallowing, decreases during the night. The association between nocturnal awakenings and swallowing activity is under-researched with limited information on the frequency of swallows during awake and asleep periods. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess nocturnal swallowing activity and identify a cut-off predicting awake and asleep periods. Methods: Patients undergoing impedance-pH monitoring as part of GERD work-up were asked to wear a wrist activity detecting device (Actigraph®) at night. Swallowing activity was quantified by analysing impedance changes in the proximal esophagus. Awake and asleep periods were determined using a validated scoring system (Sadeh algorithm). Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analyses were performed to determine sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of swallowing frequency to identify awake and asleep periods. Results: Data from 76 patients (28male, 48 female; mean age 56±15years) were included in the analysis. The ROC analysis found that 0.33sw/min (i.e. one swallow every 3min) had the optimal sensitivity (78%) and specificity (76%) to differentiate awake from asleep periods. A swallowing frequency of 0.25sw/min (i.e. one swallow every 4min) was 93% sensitive and 57% specific to identify awake periods. A swallowing frequency of 1sw/min was 20% sensitive but 96% specific in identifying awake periods. Summary and Conclusion: Impedance-pH monitoring detects differences in swallowing activity during awake and asleep periods. Swallowing frequency noticed during ambulatory impedance-pH monitoring can predict the state of consciousness during nocturnal periods

Abstract: Estimates of extinction risk for Amazonian plant and animal species are rare, and not often incorporated into land-use policy and conservation planning. Here we overlay spatial distribution models with historical and projected deforestation to show that at least 40% and up to 64% of all Amazonian tree species are likely to qualify as globally threatened under IUCN Red List criteria. If confirmed, these results would increase the number of threatened plant species on Earth by 22%. We further show that the trends observed in Amazonia apply to trees throughout the tropics, and predict that most of the world's >40,000 tropical tree species currently qualify as globally threatened. A gap analysis suggests that existing Amazonian protected areas and indigenous territories will protect viable populations of most threatened species if those areas suffer no further degradation, highlighting the key roles that protected areas, indigenous peoples, and improved governance can play in preventing large-scale extinctions in the tropics in this century.

Abstract: Objetivos: Conocer la utilización de la guía "Atención a las personas cuidadoras" por las enfermeras que han realizado intervenciones grupales con cuidadoras y averiguar su opinión sobre: - la idoneidad y estructura de las unidades didácticas - la necesidad de modificación del resto de contenidos: organización del Servicio, registro, encuesta inicial, cuestionario de calidad de vida, de evaluación del taller. - los temas no tratados que sería recomendable introducir. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo transversal mediante una encuesta aplicada a las enfermeras de Atención Primaria de Asturias que realizaron Talleres grupales con cuidadores familiares durante el periodo enero 2009-junio 2010. Resultados: El porcentaje de respuesta al cuestionario fue del 81%. La guía fue empleada para la preparación de la intervención por el 95% de las profesionales. El 96% de las encuestadas manifiestan que los contenidos de la guía responden a las necesidades de los cuidadores. Mayoritaria es también la respuesta de quienes la consideran comprensible y fácil de manejar, el 92%. Destacaron la falta de formación como dificultad para impartir los contenidos de la guía el 77%. El 91% de las encuestadas recomendaría esta guía para el desarrollo de una intervención grupal con personas cuidadoras. Conclusiones: Es bastante elevada la adherencia de las enfermeras a esta guía que orienta la intervención psicoeducativa grupal con cuidadores de personas dependientes. Se requiere llevar a cabo estrategias útiles por parte de la Administración Sanitaria con el fin de resolver las barreras identificadas que dificultan su mejor uso y aplicación, entre ellas, mejorar la formación de las enfermeras en habilidades de comunicación y de inteligencia emocional. Es necesario realizar una revisión y actualización de los contenidos de la guía para que sea una herramienta que ayude y mejore la calidad de la práctica de este Servicio. Objectives. To assess the use of the guide "Atención a las personas cuidadoras" ("Care for caregivers") by nurses who had performed group interventions with caregivers and to obtain their opinion on: - The suitability and structure of the didactic units - The need to modify the rest of the contents: Department organization, registration, initial survey, quality of life questionnaire, workshop review questionnaire - Topics which are not dealt with but which should be included Methods. Transversal descriptive study. A survey of primary care nurses in Asturias who had conducted group workshops with family caregivers between January 2009 and June 2010 was carried out. Results. The response percentage to the survey was 81%. The guide was used to prepare interventions by 95% of the professionals. 96% of the survey group declared that the contents of the guide address the needs of the caregivers. Most nurses, 92%, also consider the guide to be easy to understand and to use. 77% of them identified a lack of training as a difficulty when trying to teach the contents of the guide. Finally, 91% of the survey group would recommend using this guide when developing a group intervention with caregivers. Conclusions. Nurse adherence to this guide, which helps direct the psychoeducational group intervention for caregivers of dependent persons, was remarkably high. The Healthcare Administration should implement useful strategies in order to overcome the identified barriers which hamper a better use and application of the guide. Its contents must be reviewed and updated so that the guide may become a helpful tool capable of improving the quality of care in this Department.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Voluntary muscle activity, including swallowing, decreases during the night. The association between nocturnal awakenings and swallowing activity is under-researched with limited information on the frequency of swallows during awake and asleep periods. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess nocturnal swallowing activity and identify a cut-off predicting awake and asleep periods. METHODS: Patients undergoing impedance-pH monitoring as part of GERD work-up were asked to wear a wrist activity detecting device (Actigraph(®)) at night. Swallowing activity was quantified by analysing impedance changes in the proximal esophagus. Awake and asleep periods were determined using a validated scoring system (Sadeh algorithm). Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analyses were performed to determine sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of swallowing frequency to identify awake and asleep periods. RESULTS: Data from 76 patients (28 male, 48 female; mean age 56 ± 15 years) were included in the analysis. The ROC analysis found that 0.33 sw/min (i.e. one swallow every 3 min) had the optimal sensitivity (78 %) and specificity (76 %) to differentiate awake from asleep periods. A swallowing frequency of 0.25 sw/min (i.e. one swallow every 4 min) was 93 % sensitive and 57 % specific to identify awake periods. A swallowing frequency of 1 sw/min was 20 % sensitive but 96 % specific in identifying awake periods. Impedance-pH monitoring detects differences in swallowing activity during awake and asleep periods. Swallowing frequency noticed during ambulatory impedance-pH monitoring can predict the state of consciousness during nocturnal periods.

Abstract: New data on the properties of red blood cells (RBC) cross-linked with glutaraldehyde are presented (see also Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun., 1988, 156, 970-977). Equilibrium and kinetic data show that by carrying out the fixation procedure in the absence of oxygen but in the presence of allosteric effectors (e.g., stabilizing the low-affinity (T) quaternary state of hemoglobin), it is possible to maintain, at least in part, the biochemical functions of the crosslinked hemoglobin inside the cell. Moreover, we show that the oxygen affinity of fixed red blood cells (RBC) is still modulated, even though to a smaller degree, by the allosteric effector bezafibrate (BZF), which is able to cross the fixed RBC membrane. Membrane filtration experiments indicate that the higher rigidity of fixed RBC alters significantly their rheodynamic properties and show that in order to exploit "engineered" RBC as "blood substitutes," more flexible cross-linking reagents may offer significant advantages.
