For the study of the first year of life, Sander, Stern, and Gomez each chose the adult–infant relationship as the unit of analysis; they followed its development, respectively, in moments of meeting, in the proto-conversation and in the focus of attention. The authors explicitly refer to the Gestalt theory and support the need to interpret the behavior of the child as part of a wider context, as the experiences of a person in relation (Galli, 2010) since birth.

The SYRMA-3D collaboration is setting up the first clinical trial of phase-contrast breast CT with synchrotron radiation at the Elettra synchrotron facility in Trieste, Italy. In this communication, a quality control protocol for breast CT is proposed, and a first test of image quality measurements is performed by means of a custom-made radiographic phantom.

Uteri from four pregnant females and two newborn of shortfin mako, Isurus oxyrinchus, were collected in the southeastern region of Brazil, during September, October, and November of 1993 and 1994. All embryos were near-term with developing dentition and inner organs. Total length ranged from 64.5 to 72.0 cm, and the maximum number of embryos observed in a litter was 20. These observations further confirmed oophagy as a form of nutrition in this species, and its periodicity. The presence of teeth in the embryos' stomachs suggest that tooth replacement begins in the uterine phase.

The environmental impact of Bitcoin mining has raised severe concerns considering the expected growth of 30% by 2030. This study aimed to develop a Life Cycle Assessment model to determine the carbon dioxide equivalent emissions associated with Bitcoin mining, considering material requirements and energy demand. By applying the impact assessment method IPCC 2021 GWP (100 years), the GHG emissions associated with electricity consumption were estimated at 51.7 Mt CO2 eq/year in 2022 and calculated by modelling real national mixes referring to the geographical area where mining takes place, allowing for the determination of the environmental impacts in a site-specific way. The estimated impacts were then adjusted to future energy projections (2030 and 2050), by modelling electricity mixes coherently with the spatial distribution of mining activities, the related national targeted goals, the increasing demand for electricity for hashrate and the capability of the systems to recover the heat generated in the mining phase. Further projections for 2030, based on two extrapolated energy consumption models, were also determined. The outcomes reveal that, in relation to the considered scenarios and their associated assumptions, breakeven points where the increase in energy consumption associated with mining nullifies the increase in the renewable energy share within the energy mix exist. The amount of amine-based sorbents hypothetically needed to capture the total CO2 equivalent emitted directly and indirectly for Bitcoin mining reaches up to almost 12 Bt. Further developments of the present work would rely on more reliable data related to future energy projections and the geographical distribution of miners, as well as an extension of the environmental categories analyzed. The Life Cycle Assessment methodology represents a valid tool to support policies and decision makers.

The growing attention regarding the environmental challenges in the energy sectors pushes the industrial system toward the investigation of more sustainable and renewable energy sources to replace fossil ones. Among the promising alternatives, biomass is considered a valid source to convert the system and to reduce the fossil fraction of the national energy mixes, but its multiple potential uses need an environmental evaluation to understand the actual benefit when it is used as an energy resource. For this purpose, life cycle assessment (LCA) is applied to a wood biomass gasification system aimed to produce electricity and heat generated after the combustion of the produced syngas and the management of the biochar. The aim is to provide a quantitative comparison of (i) a baseline scenario where wood biomass is sourced from waste and (ii) a second scenario where wood biomass is drawn from dedicated cultivation. A further evaluation was finally applied to investigate the environmental implications associated with the biochar composition, assuming it was used on land. The proposed strategies resulted in an environmental credit for both the examined scenarios, but the outcomes showed a net preference for the baseline scenario, resulting in better environmental performances for all the examined categories with respect to the second one. It underlines the potentialities of using waste-sourced biomass. However, according to the Climate Change category, if on-site dedicated biomass cultivation is assumed for the second scenario, the baseline is considered preferable only if the biomass transportation distance is

Activating colony-stimulating factor-3 receptor gene (CSF3R) mutations are recurrent in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with t(8;21) translocation. However, the nature of oncogenic collaboration between alterations of CSF3R and the t(8;21) associated RUNX1-RUNX1T1 fusion remains unclear. In CD34+ hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells from healthy donors, double oncogene expression led to a clonal advantage, increased self-renewal potential, and blast-like morphology and distinct immunophenotype. Gene expression profiling revealed hedgehog signaling as a potential mechanism, with upregulation of GLI2 constituting a putative pharmacological target. Both primary hematopoietic cells and the t(8;21) positive AML cell line SKNO-1 showed increased sensitivity to the GLI inhibitor GANT61 when expressing CSF3R T618I. Our findings suggest that during leukemogenesis, the RUNX1-RUNXT1 fusion and CSF3R mutation act in a synergistic manner to alter hedgehog signaling, which can be exploited therapeutically.

This study investigated the main microbial groups characterizing the interior surface of oak barrels from different years (1890, 1895, 1920, 1975, 2008) used in the production of vino cotto. The yeasts were characterized for the following properties: γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) production, antioxidant activity, air–liquid interfacial biofilm formation, and anthocyanin adsorption capacity. Community-level physiological profile analysis revealed that the microbial communities inside the barrels used the tested carbon sources in different manners. The following yeast species were identified: Millerozyma farinosa, Zygosaccharomyces bisporus, Wickerhamiella versatilis, Zygosaccharomyces bailii, Starmerella lactis-condensi, and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii. All the strains were able to produce GABA, and S. lactis-condensi, Z. bisporus and Z. rouxii were the highest producers (more than 600 mg/L). The Z. rouxii and Z. bailii strains showed the highest antioxidant activity. Only seven strains out of ten M. farinosa formed air–liquid interfacial biofilm. None of the M. farinosa strains adsorbed anthocyanins on their cell wall. The other strains adsorbed anthocyanins in a strain-dependent way, and the highest adsorption was observed for the W. versatilis strains. The yeasts isolated in this study could be used to increase the functional properties and the quality of fermented foods and beverages.

Report of a rare case of recurrence of Kawasaki Disease (KD) and, thus, draw the attention to the possibility of recurrence of the disease after the first episode and thee risk of coronary complications. Recorrence of KD is rare, occurs in only 3-5% of case described in Japan, and is even less frequent in other populations. The inscidence of recurrence in KD is highest in the first two years after the first diagnosis, being more frequent in male patients aged two years or less. Cardiac complications are more frequent in the recurrence of KD, and death can occur from coronary thrombosis or rupture of coronary aneurysm.

The 17th Century Casa a Ponente of Palazzo Rocca Costaguta's wall provided an opportunity for an evaluation based on a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach of conservation treatments aiming at removing biological colonization from built heritage surfaces. The investigated surfaces were historic plasters partially covered by a patchy green patina due to biofilm recolonization soon after a previous biocidal treatment. Areas of the biocolonized wall were treated by conservation professionals according to both conventional and "green" (i.e., exploiting natural active principles) biocidal products, including Preventol RI 50 (active substance benzalkonium chloride), Essenzio (active substance essential oregano oil), and hydrogen peroxide. Upon treatment, LCA analysis was conducted to evaluate the environmental impact of the different solutions, including a no-treatment option. LCA analysis was based on on-site investigations of the untreated wall surface with and without biofilm and following the biocidal treatment. The conservation treatment's impact on the mineral substrate was based on digital microscopy, colorimetry, and water contact angle measurements via an innovative portable method. The results highlighted the impacts of the different biocidal treatments, which, in some cases, have not completely removed the biofilm and, in some cases, have altered the surface properties of the plaster. This pointed out the opportunity to re-think conservation strategy, including LCA analysis as a complementary tool to assess the environmental impact of the different conservation treatments and procedures. In this work, we experimentally analyze the periodic oscillations that take place in staircase APDs with separate absorption and multiplication regions when operating under continuous laser light. These oscillations increase in frequency when the APD gain increases. We have verified that they are not affected by the parameters (gain and bandwidth) of the transimpedance amplifier, and thus originate inside the APD. The phenomenon is analyzed systematically by considering devices with different thicknesses of the absorption region. Possible physical interpretations related to the flux of holes generated by impact ionization are provided.

The aim of this study was the evaluation of the effect of the sequential inoculation of Metschnikowia pulcherrima and Saccharomyces cerevisiae for the production of Pecorino wine on the winery scale. Sequential inoculation allowed for wines with interesting oenological characteristics to be obtained. In particular, these wines showed a lower ethanol content than those obtained with S. cerevisiae alone, and the presence of M. pulcherrima induced a reduction in the wine titratable and volatile acidity of about 30%. The effect of M. pulcherrima was relevant also in terms of the volatile profile of the wines. In fact, an increase in the esters content of 60% and a reduction of 53% of the acetic acid was observed. Moreover, the sequential inoculation resulted in an increase in the terpenes content of about 80%. The wines also showed a different sensory profile; in fact, the wines obtained with the sequential inoculation showed higher scores than the other wines for the following descriptors: floral, tropical fruit, citrusy, balsamic, and freshness.

In this study, six fermentation trials were carried out: co-inoculation and sequential inoculation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Starmerella bacillaris in the presence and absence of oak chips. Moreover, Starm. bacillaris strain was attached to the oak chips and co-inoculated or sequentially inoculated with S. cerevisiae. Wines fermented with Starm. bacillaris adhered to oak chips showed a higher concentration of glycerol (more than 6 g/L) than the others (about 5 g/L). These wines also showed a higher content of polyphenols (more than 300 g/L) than the others (about 200 g/L). The addition of oak chips induced an increase of yellow color (b* value of about 3). Oak-treated wines were characterized by a higher concentration of higher alcohols, esters and terpenes. Aldehydes, phenols and lactones were detected only in these wines, independently from the inoculation strategy. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were also observed in the sensory profiles. The fruity, toasty, astringency, and vanilla sensations were perceived as more intense in wines treated with oak chips. The white flower descriptor showed a higher score in wines fermented without chips. Oak surface-adhered Starm. bacillaris cells could be a good strategy to improve the volatile and sensory profile of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo wines.

The aim of this study was to characterize the ampelographic and genetic profiles of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Nero Antico di Pretalucente and to describe the grape-borne fungal communities. The oenological characteristics and the aroma profile of wine obtained by spontaneous fermentation were also investigated. Microsatellite profiles and ampelographic traits indicated that this cultivar presented a unique profile, and therefore it can be considered a cultivar in its own right and autochthonous of Gessopalena village. Next-generation sequencing analysis revealed that Aureobasidium spp. was the main genus detected on grapes. At the species level, Aureobasidium pullulans was the main species, followed by Alternaria alternata. Wines were characterized by a final ethanol content of 12.75% (v/v), a pH of 3.4, a volatile acidity lower than 0.6 g/L, a content of glycerol of 8.56 g/L, and a concentration of polyphenols and anthocyanins of 977 GAE/L and 266 mg/L, respectively. The intensity and tonality of the wine as well as the active odor compounds found were described. The results obtained could improve the knowledge concerning the agronomic traits and the wine obtained from this ancient and autochthonous grapevine variety cultivated in a foothill area, in order to offer consumers a wine with unique traits.
