The purpose of this study is to determine how master's students' personal reading attitudes and habits impact their classroom instructional practices. An online questionnaire was used to collect data on participants' habits and attitudes toward reading in English. Only 24% read between 30 minutes and more than an hour, a small number of teachers (8) consider themselves to be "devoted" readers, teachers who value reading more are more likely to use best practice strategies. However, teachers who value reading less tend to share their own perceptions related to reading and also recommend reading material to students, and teachers who read for pleasure more than 30 minutes a day use a greater number of instructional practices considered to be among the best., El propósito de este estudio es determinar cómo las actitudes y hábitos de lectura personales de los estudiantes de maestría impactan en sus prácticas de instrucción en el aula. Se utilizó un cuestionario en línea para recopilar datos sobre los hábitos y actitudes de los participantes hacia la lectura en inglés. Solo el 24 % lee entre 30 minutos y más de una hora, un pequeño número de docentes (8) se consideran a sí mismos como lectores “devotos”, los maestros que valoran más la lectura son más propensos a utilizar estrategias de mejores prácticas. Sin embargo, los docentes que valoran menos la lectura tienden a compartir sus propias percepciones relacionadas a lectura y también recomiendan material de lectura a los estudiantes, y los docentes que leen por placer más de 30 minutos al día utilizan una mayor cantidad de prácticas de instrucción consideradas ser entre las mejores.

Una de las mayores preocupaciones de los profesores de inglés como lengua extranjera (EFL) es conseguir que los estudiantes interactúen en el aula; en este sentido, este estudio analizó las percepciones sobre las estrategias específicas para mejorar la habilidad de expresión oral que utilizan los alumnos de la Unidad Educativa "Ramona Auxiliadora Marcillo Chica". Para recoger los datos se utilizó un cuestionario, los resultados mostraron cómo los estudiantes aprenden inglés y qué estrategias utilizan para este fin; asimismo, el análisis de datos indica los niveles de compromiso, autonomía, y cierta indiferencia respecto al aprendizaje de EFL. Esto nos lleva a concluir que, los estudiantes pueden mejorar sus habilidades orales siempre y cuando los profesores de inglés implementen estrategias y metodologías efectivas en el aula, como la lectura en voz alta y el uso de canciones, lo cual permitirá que los estudiantes mejoren su habilidad oral con precisión y espontaneidad., One of the major concerns of teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) is to get students to interact in the classroom; in this sense, this study analyzed the perceptions of specific strategies to improve speaking skills used by students at the "Ramona Auxiliadora Marcillo Chica" Educational Unit. A questionnaire was used to collect data, the results showed how students learn English and what strategies they use for this purpose; also, the data analysis indicates levels of commitment, autonomy, and a certain indifference with respect to EFL learning. This leads us to conclude that, students can improve their oral skills as long as English teachers implement effective strategies and methodologies in the classroom, such as reading aloud and the use of songs, which will enable students to improve their oral skills with accuracy and spontaneity.

This quasi-experimental study set out to explore the effects of direct focused feedback and no feedback on run-on sentences, sentence fragments, and noun-pronoun agreement errors in A2 writing tasks of EFL students at Universidad de Cuenca, Ecuador. The study comprised 39 participants divided into a treatment (n=20) and control group (n=19). The feedback strategies were applied on 6 different tasks, and the first and last task were used as the pre- and posttest, respectively. After tallying the number of errors in the pre- and posttest, a statistical analysis was run. The results indicated that direct focused feedback, unlike the control group, produced significant changes in terms of run-on sentences and sentence fragments. The influence of target language proficiency on language teaching practices is not a new area of research; nevertheless, there is still lack of knowledge since some research results have yield weak and inconclusive findings in different contexts. This research examines the relationship between EFL teachers' language proficiency and their teaching practices. An explanatory sequential mixed-methods design was followed and two data collection instruments were used: an English proficiency test, to determine the EFL teachers' proficiency level and a class observation scheme, to record instructional practices of seventeen EFL teachers systematically. The percentage of time spent on the different categories of the first part of the scheme and proportions of each category of the second part of the scheme were calculated to perform a Spearman correlation test. After that, a qualitative analysis of the teaching practices was conducted in order to get a deeper understanding of the quantitative data. The results indicate that higher proficient teachers provide better quality of input and feedback and are better models for learners; however, a direct influence on classroom management was not found. An equal focus on pedagogy and methodology instruction as well as on target language improvement is suggested for EFL teacher education programs., La influencia del dominio del inglés en las prácticas de enseñanza de este idioma no es una nueva área de investigación; sin embargo, todavía hay desconocimiento ya que algunas investigaciones han arrojado resultados inconclusos en diferentes contextos. Esta investigación examina la relación entre el dominio lingüístico de los profesores de inglés y sus prácticas docentes. Se siguió un diseño explicativo secuencial de métodos mixtos y se utilizaron dos instrumentos de recopilación de datos: una prueba de dominio del inglés, para determinar el nivel de competencia de los docentes y un esquema de observación de clases, para registrar sistemáticamente las prácticas de instrucción de diecisiete docentes. El porcentaje de tiempo dedicado a las diferentes categorías de la primera parte del esquema y las proporciones de cada categoría de la segunda parte del esquema se calcularon para realizar una prueba de correlación de Spearman. A continuación, se llevó a cabo un análisis cualitativo de las prácticas de enseñanza con el fin de obtener una comprensión más profunda de los datos cuantitativos. Los resultados indican que los docentes con mejor nivel proporcionan una mejor calidad de información y retroalimentación y son mejores modelos para los estudiantes; sin embargo, no se evidencia una influencia directa entre el nivel de inglés y el manejo del aula. Se sugiere que los programas de formación de docentes en inglés se enfoquen tanto en pedagogía y metodología cuanto en la mejora continua del idioma.

This paper reports on a descriptive mixed-method study that aimed to identify the impact of expressive writing on relieving the academic stress of 157 undergraduate students at an Ecuadorian university. Data were gathered through two questionnaires and from focus groups. Results showed enduring relief of academic stress. Furthermore, they help to shed light on the need to study the impact of academic stress on university students and to look for different strategies that can alleviate it. These findings could help to understand students’ needs, as they have essential implications in teachers’ practices and, consequently, in students’ performance. In conclusion, expressive writing has a positive effect on helping to ease academic stress and overcome some difficulties caused by this issue.

This study examines the relationship between individual factors such as age, learning opportunities, and motivation and English language proficiency of pre-service EFL student-teachers. A background questionnaire and an English proficiency test were given to 121 student-teachers. The results revealed that the majority of participants have a low English proficiency which is not likely to improve at the end of the teaching program and that third language learning as well as integrative motivation are strong predictors of language proficiency. Qualitatively, respondents described their reasons for having English language difficulties and for their integrative and instrumental motivation, which complemented the quantitative data. Suggestions for pedagogical practice that might improve the situation are given., Este estudio examina la relación entre los factores individuales de estudiantes de un profesorado en inglés como la edad, oportunidades de aprendizaje, motivación, y su dominio del idioma extranjero. Un cuestionario de antecedentes y una prueba de dominio del idioma inglés fueron administrados a 121 estudiantes. Los resultados revelaron que la mayoría de participantes tienen un bajo nivel de inglés con pocas probabilidades de mejora al final del programa, y que el aprendizaje de un tercer idioma, así como la motivación integradora, son fuertes predictores de dominio del idioma. Cualitativamente, los participantes describieron las razones que dificultan el aprendizaje del idioma, así como también las de su motivación integradora e instrumental, lo cual complementa los datos cuantitativos. Se sugiere prácticas pedagógicas que podrían mejorar la situación actual.
