Analysis of the context and response to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown of five European Library and Information Science Departments: University of Barcelona (Spain), University of Hildesheim (Germany), University of Osijek, University of Zagreb (Croatia), and University of Library Studies and Information Technologies in Sofia (Bulgaria). Data about this situation in relation to higher education were collected 1 year after the lockdown when countries had returned to normality. The methodology consisted of holding focus groups with students and individual interviews with teachers. The data were analysed by unifying the information collected from each country into a centralized dataset and complemented with texts from the transcripts highlighted by each partner. The results indicate that each partner experienced a unique situation; as COVID-19 lockdowns were different in every European country, each university or even each teacher responded to the crisis differently. Nevertheless, there are points that are common to all five universities analysed in the study, such as work overload in students and teachers or the replication of face-to-face teaching models in a remote format. Moving in the future to online or hybrid learning activities will require training teachers in a more systematic way and the appropriate infrastructure.

The development of microsurgical techniques has been dependent on experimental animals, and has been driven by the demands of human surgery for more sophisticated techniques and by the need for novel laboratory models in biomedical research. In this context, microsurgery could be a very valuable technique to improve experimental models of hepatic insufficiency. Microdissection and microsutures are the two main microsurgical techniques that can be considered for classifying the experimental models developed. Simple and triple partial portal vein ligation, cholestasis, and hepatectomies are all models based on microdissection. On the other hand, in portacaval shunt and orthotopic and heterotopic liver transplantation, the microsuture techniques stand out. By reducing surgical complications, these microsurgical techniques allow for improving the resulting experimental models. Thus, liver atrophy related to portacaval shunt, prehepatic portal hypertension secondary to partial portal vein ligation, cholestasis by resection of the extrahepatic biliary tract, hepatic regeneration after partial hepatectomies, acute liver failure associated with subtotal or total hepatectomy, and finally complications derived from preservation or rejection in orthotopic and heterotopic liver transplantation can be studied in more standardized experimental models. If good experimental models for liver research are successfully developed, the results obtained from their study might be particularly useful in patients with acute and chronic liver diseases. Therefore, experimental liver microsurgery could be an invaluable way to translate laboratory data on liver research into new clinical therapeutic strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Portal hypertension induces a splanchnic and systemic low-grade inflammatory response that could induce the expression of three phenotypes, named ischemia-reperfusion, leukocytic, and angiogenic phenotypes.During the splanchnic expression of these phenotypes, interstitial edema, increased lymph flow, and lymphangiogenesis are produced in the gastrointestinal tract. Associated liver disease increases intestinal bacterial translocation, splanchnic lymph flow, and induces ascites and hepatorenal syndrome. Extrahepatic cholestasis in the rat allows to study the worsening of the portal hypertensive syndrome when associated with chronic liver disease. The splanchnic interstitium, the mesenteric lymphatics, and the peritoneal mesothelium seem to create an inflammatory pathway that could have a key pathophysiological relevance in the production of the portal hypertension syndrome complications. The hypothetical comparison between the ascitic and the amniotic fluids allows for translational investigation. From a phylogenetic point of view, the ancestral mechanisms for amniotic fluid production were essential for animal survival out of the aquatic environment. However, their hypothetical appearance in the cirrhotic patient is considered pathological since ultimately they lead to ascites development. But, the adult human being would take advantage of the potential beneficial effects of this "amniotic-like fluid" to manage the interstitial fluids without adverse effects when chronic liver disease aggravates. This article presents an analysis of the impact of Open Educational Resources (OER) during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their potential use in the post-pandemic, in Library and Information Science (LIS) higher education institutions. The research explored how OER were used and created, what were the main barriers and drivers in practice and some main lessons learned that can help to improve the quality and increase the use of OER beyond times of crisis. The research was based on fieldwork carried out in the LIS departments of the universities of Barcelona (Spain), Hildesheim (Germany), Osijek and Zagreb (Croatia) and the University of Library Studies and Information Technologies in Sofia (Bulgaria). The methodology approach was qualitative and was based on interviews with faculty and focus groups with students. Results show that faculty members were still hesitant to adopt OER since they generally did not consider them. Moreover, those who did use them did so on their own initiative and as additional resources. We discuss the different speeds of OER implementation that have been observed depending on the faculty's prior level of knowledge, and on whether their institutions and countries are prepared to support the use of OER. The promotion of post-pandemic OER involves greater capacity building, as well as collaboration and institutional support. Students' attitudes about the usefulness of OER focus on their availability. Aim: To know the factors associated with an unfavorable evolution (UE) of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 with total or partial follow-up in primary care., Design: A case series., Setting: Urban health center., Participants: By systematic sampling, patients ≥18 years, diagnosed with COVID-19, with analytical confirmation, in 2020 and followed up by their family doctors, were selected., Main Measurements: Dependent variable: hospital admission or death due to COVID-19., Independent Variables: age, sex, medical background, clinical data and treatments related to the disease. Statistical analysis, with SPSS 25.0: descriptive analysis, comparison of proportions (chi square) and medians (Mann-Whitney U). The analysis is completed with logistic regression., Results: 610 patients were included in the study. The median age was 49 years (interquartile range: 35-61); 51.8% were women; 14.9% presented UE (95% CI: 12.0-17.8). The sociodemographic variables or the variables related to medical background that showed an independent association with UE were age (OR: 1.066; 95% CI: 1.038-1.095), sex (OR for men: 3.277; 95% CI: 1.304-8.235) and being a smoker or former smoker (OR: 2.565; 95% CI: 1.135-5.800). Regarding the clinical variables of the disease, an association was found for altered consciousness (OR: 62.829; 95% CI: 9.177-430.149), dyspnea (OR: 14.339; 95% CI: 6.046-34.009), expectoration (OR: 4.764; 95% CI: 1.858-12.213)) and asthenia (OR: 3.993; 95% CI: 1.705-9.351)., Conclusions: 14.9% of the patients diagnosed with COVID-19 presented an UE. Older age, male sex and being a smoker or former smoker increased the probability of it. A serious complication of chronic hepatic insufficiency is acute-on-chronic liver failure, a recognized syndrome characterized by acute decompensation of cirrhosis and organ/system failure. We investigated the use of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) in an experimental model of acute-on-chronic liver failure, developed by microsurgical extrahepatic cholestasis in rats. Rats undergoing microsurgical extrahepatic cholestasis were treated by intraparenchymal liver injection of human or rat AD-MSCs, undifferentiated or previously differentiated in vitro toward the hepatocyte lineage. The groups treated with rat AD-MSCs showed less ascites, lower hepato- and splenomegaly, less testicular atrophy, and an improvement in serum biochemical hepatic parameters. There was also an improvement in histological liver changes, in which the area of fibrosis and bile duct proliferation were significantly decreased in the group treated with predifferentiated rat AD-MSCs. In conclusion, an isograft of hepatocyte-predifferentiated AD-MSCs injected intraparenchymally 2 weeks after microsurgery in extrahepatic cholestatic rats prevents secondary complications of acute-on-chronic hepatic failure. These data support the potential use of autologous AD-MSCs in the treatment of human cholestasis, and specifically of newborn biliary atresia, which could be beneficial for patients awaiting transplant., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Masson SAS. Inflammation integrates diverse mechanisms that are associated not only with pathological conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases and cancer, but also with physiological processes like reproduction i.e. oogenesis and embryogenesis as well as aging. In the current review we firstly propose that the inflammatory response could recapitulate the phylogenia. In this way, highly conserved inflammatory mechanisms that play a main role in the evolutive development of different animal species, both invertebrates as well as vertebrates, are identified. Therefore, we also hypothesize that inflammation could represent a key tool used by nature to modulate organisms according to the environmental conditions in which these develop. Thus, inflammation could be the pathway by which the environmental factors could be related to the evolutionary development. If so, the diverse human chronic inflammatory diseases that nowadays the Western society suffer would represent the way for adapting to the abrupt changes in their lifestyle. Nonetheless, the distribution of the different pathological conditions varies in terms of intensity and magnitude among Western country populations depending on their genetic polymorphism. In this case, it should be considered that this set of diseases, distributed between all the individuals that constitute the Westernized society, would represent a true Social Inflammatory Syndrome whose final result is its remodeling. In this context, the use of inflammation by the Western society could represent the camouflaged expression of efficient mechanisms of evolution and development. In addition, if the different types of the inflammatory response involved in these diverse chronic pathological conditions could trace the biochemical origins of life, perhaps inflammation could represent an archaeological tool of unsuspected usefulness for understanding our own origin., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
