The AMnO 2 delafossites (A = Na, Cu) are model frustrated antiferromagnets, with triangular layers of Mn 3+ spins. At low temperatures ( T N = 65 K), a C 2/ m → P 1̅ transition is found in CuMnO 2 , which breaks frustration and establishes magnetic order. In contrast to this clean transition, A = Na only shows short-range distortions at T N . Here, we report a systematic crystallographic, spectroscopic, and theoretical investigation of CuMnO 2 . We show that, even in stoichiometric samples, nonzero anisotropic Cu displacements coexist with magnetic order. Using X-ray/neutron diffraction and Raman scattering, we show that high pressures act to decouple these degrees of freedom. This manifests as an isostuctural phase transition at ∼10 GPa, with a reversible collapse of the c -axis. This is shown to be the high-pressure analogue of the c -axis negative thermal expansion seen at ambient pressure. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations confirm that dynamical instabilities of the Cu + cations and edge-shared MnO 6 layers are intertwined at ambient pressure. However, high pressure selectively activates the former, before an eventual predicted reemergence of magnetism at the highest pressures. Our results show that the lattice dynamics and local structure of CuMnO 2 are quantitatively different from nonmagnetic Cu delafossites and raise questions about the role of intrinsic inhomogeneity in frustrated antiferromagnets.

The Ising triangular lattice remains the classic test-case for frustrated magnetism. Here we report neutron scattering measurements of short range magnetic order in CuMnO 2 , which consists of a distorted lattice of Mn 3+ spins with single-ion anisotropy. Physical property measurements on CuMnO 2 are consistent with 1D correlations caused by anisotropic orbital occupation. However the diffuse magnetic neutron scattering seen in powder measurements has previously been fitted by 2D Warren-type correlations. Using neutron spectroscopy, we show that paramagnetic fluctuations persist up to ∼25 meV above T N = 65 K. This is comparable to the incident energy of typical diffractometers, and results in a smearing of the energy integrated signal, which hence cannot be analysed in the quasi-static approximation. We use low energy XYZ polarised neutron scattering to extract the purely magnetic (quasi)-static signal. This is fitted by reverse Monte Carlo analysis, which reveals that two directions in the triangular layers are perfectly frustrated in the classical spin-liquid phase at 75 K. Strong antiferromagnetic correlations are only found along the b -axis, and our results hence unify the pictures seen by neutron scattering and macroscopic physical property measurements., (© 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Enantiomeric amino acids have specific physiological functions in complex biological systems. Systematic studies focusing on the solid-state properties of d-amino acids are, however, still limited. To shed light on this field, structural and spectroscopic studies of d-alanine using neutron powder diffraction, polarized Raman scattering and ab initio calculations of harmonic vibrational frequencies were carried out. Clear changes in the number of vibrational modes are observed as a function of temperature, which can be directly connected to variations of the N-D bond lengths. These results reveal dissimilarities in the structural properties of d-alanine compared with l-alanine.

The random fluctuations of spins give rise to many interesting physical phenomena, such as the 'order-from-disorder' arising in frustrated magnets and unconventional Cooper pairing in magnetic superconductors. Here we show that the exchange of spin waves between extended topological defects, such as domain walls, can result in novel magnetic states. We report the discovery of an unusual incommensurate phase in the orthoferrite TbFeO(3) using neutron diffraction under an applied magnetic field. The magnetic modulation has a very long period of 340 Å at 3 K and exhibits an anomalously large number of higher-order harmonics. These domain walls are formed by Ising-like Tb spins. They interact by exchanging magnons propagating through the Fe magnetic sublattice. The resulting force between the domain walls has a rather long range that determines the period of the incommensurate state and is analogous to the pion-mediated Yukawa interaction between protons and neutrons in nuclei.

We show that the valence electrons of Ba3NaRu2O9, which has a quasimolecular structure, completely crystallize below 210 K. Using an extended Hubbard model, we show that the charge ordering instability results from long-range Coulomb interactions. However, orbital ordering, metal-metal bonding, and formation of a partial spin gap enforce the magnitude of the charge separation. The striped charge order and frustrated hcp lattice of Ru2O9 dimers lead to competition with a quasidegenerate charge-melted phase under photoexcitation at low temperature. Our results establish a broad class of simple metal oxides as models for emergent phenomena at the border between the molecular and solid states.

Using soft x-ray diffraction at the Dy-M₅ resonance, pronounced circular dichroism in the ferroelectric phase of DyMnO₃ is observed in connection with sizable b and c components of the Dy-4f magnetic moments. This provides strong evidence for cycloidal order of the 4f moments, corroborating that inversion-symmetry breaking in this material is not accomplished by the Mn spins alone. The 4f circular dichroism allows us to image multiferroic domains that are imprinted on the surface of DyMnO₃ using the local charging by the x-ray beam via the photoelectric effect.

Rubidium copper phosphate, RbCuPO(4), forms two room-temperature polymorphs that have been investigated with neutron powder diffraction. Polymorph (II) can be converted quantitatively into (I) by grinding the material or by pelletization, and the phase transition is accompanied by a significant colour change from very pale green to sky blue. Polymorph (II) can be obtained essentially free of (I) by quenching from 723 K. Each polymorph shows two unique Cu atoms: in (I) both sites are four-coordinate in a 2:1 ratio, whereas in (II) the atoms are four- and five-coordinate in a 1:1 ratio. In each case these sites are linked by phosphate tetrahedra to form three-dimensional frameworks based on the 4(2)6(3)8-a four-connected net. The Rb atoms are hosted in the six- and eight-ring channels that are similar to those observed in zeolite ABW. The (II) --> (I) phase transition is also accompanied by a volume reduction of 2.1% even though the average coordination of the Cu atoms also falls. The structures of the polymorphs are critically examined and compared with those of KNiPO(4) and KCuPO(4) in terms of hexagonal close packing containing ordered phosphate arrays. As a result of buckling of the six-ring layers, one-dimensional chains of dimerized copper polyhedra are identified in (II), chains that become trimers with mirror symmetry in (I).

Charge ordering phenomena in overdoped La1-xCaxMnO3 (LCMO) manganites with x>or=0.5 are generally believed to be associated with the formation of charge stripes composed of alternating Mn3+ and Mn4+ charges. However, a number of recent experiments indicate that instead of stripes the charge in these systems is spatially organized in a uniform charge density wave. At the same time theory predicts that the ground state is modulated by an incommensurate (IC) orbital and charge soliton lattice. Here, by using nuclear magnetic resonance we provide the first direct evidence that the spin ground state in overdoped LCMO manganites is IC modulated with phase solitons. At higher temperatures the solitonic superstructure is replaced by a uniform spin-density wave, subjected to coherent slow fluctuations, showing a striking similarity with slow fluctuations in the striped phase of high T{c} cuprates and nickelates.

Raman and neutron experiments using specific isotope labeling were combined in order to study the dynamics and structure of L-alanine. Inelastic neutron and Raman scattering data of C(2)H(4)(ND(2))CO(2)D are discussed in relation to the doubling of the lattice parameter a observed by means of neutron powder diffraction in C(2)D(4) (NH(2))CO(2)H. The major changes accompanying the phase transition are found in the vibrational frequencies involving the torsional vibration tau(CO(2)(-)), which is clearly affected by the hydrogen bonds between the protons of the ammonium group and the oxygen atoms of the carboxylate group. At lower temperatures the rearrangement of identifiable hydrogen bonds induces changes in the bending vibration delta(ND(3)), confirming some orientational disorder.

Charge carriers in low-doped semiconductors may distort the atomic lattice around them and through this interaction form so-called small polarons. High carrier concentrations on the other hand can lead to short-range ordered polarons (large polarons) and even to a long-range charge and orbital order. These ordered systems should be insulating with a large electrical resistivity. However, recently a polaronic pseudogap was found in a metallic phase of La(2-2x)Sr(1+2x)Mn(2)O(7) (ref. 7). This layered manganite is famous for colossal magnetoresistance associated with a phase transition from this low-temperature metallic phase to a high-temperature insulating phase. Broad charge-order peaks due to large polarons in the insulating phase disappear when La(2-2x)Sr(1+2x)Mn(2)O(7) becomes metallic. Investigating how polaronic features survive in the metallic phase, here we report the results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements showing that inside the metallic phase polarons remain as fluctuations that strongly broaden and soften certain phonons near the wavevectors where the charge-order peaks appeared in the insulating phase. Our findings imply that polaronic signatures in metals may generally come from a competing insulating charge-ordered phase. Our findings are highly relevant to cuprate superconductors with both a pseudogap and a similar phonon effect associated with a competing stripe order.

Using in-field single-crystal neutron diffraction, we have determined the magnetic structure of TbMnO(3) in the high field P parallel a phase. We unambiguously establish that the ferroelectric polarization arises from a cycloidal Mn spin ordering, with spins rotating in the ab plane. Our results demonstrate directly that the flop of the ferroelectric polarization in TbMnO(3) with applied magnetic field is caused from the flop of the Mn cycloidal plane.

Anomalous low temperature electronic and structural behavior has been discovered in PbRuO3. The structure [space group Pnma, a=5.563 14(1), b=7.864 68(1), c=5.614 30(1) A] and metallic conductivity at 290 K are similar to those of SrRuO3 and other ruthenate perovskites, but a sharp metal-insulator transition at which the resistivity increases by 4 orders of magnitude is discovered at 90 K. This is accompanied by a first-order structural transition to an Imma phase [a=5.569 62(1), b=7.745 50(1), c=5.662 08(1) A at 25 K] that shows a coupling of Ru4+ 4d orbital order to distortions from Pb2+ 6s6p orbital hybridization. The Pnma to Imma transition is an unconventional reversal of the group-subgroup symmetry relationship. No long range magnetic order is evident down to 1.5 K. Calculations show that Pb 6s6p and Ru 4d orbital hybridization and strong spin-orbit coupling are significant.

Incoherent inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed on Na0.7CoO2 and Na0.28CoO2.1.3H2O in order to understand how the dynamics of the hydrogen-bond network of water is modified in the triangular crystalline lattice NaxCoO2.yH2O. Using quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS), we were able to differentiate between two types of proton dynamics: a fast process (due to water strongly bound into the sodium cobalt oxyhydrate structure during the hydration process) and a slow process (likely attributable to a collective motion). High-resolution QENS experiments, carried out on Na0.28CoO2.1.3H2O, show that, at temperatures above 310 K, the water dynamics can be well-described by a random jump diffusion model characterized by a diffusion constant equal to 0.9 x 10(-9)m2/s, which is significantly lower than the rate of diffusion for bulk water. Furthermore, our results indicate that, at room temperature, the sodium ions have no influence on the rotational dynamics of the "fast" water molecules.

We report on diffraction measurements on multiferroic TbMnO(3) which demonstrate that the Tb- and Mn-magnetic orders are coupled below the ferroelectric transition T(FE) = 28 K. For T

This work reports neutron diffraction and incoherent neutron scattering experiments on N-methylacetamide (NMA), which can be considered the model building block for the peptide linkage of polypeptides and proteins. Using the neutron data, we have been able to associate the onset of a striking negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the a-axis with a dynamical transition around 230 K, consistent with our calorimetric experiments. Observation of the NTE raises the question of possible proton transfer in NMA, which, from our data alone, still cannot be settled. We can only speculate that intermolecular repulsive forces increase as the O...H distance decreases upon cooling, and that around 230 K the lattice relaxes without observation of an actual proton transfer. However, the existence of a nonharmonic potential, reflected by the behavior of the phonon vibrations together with the observation of NTE, could be justified by the "vibrational" polaron theory in which a dynamic localization of the vibrational energy is created by coupling an internal molecular mode to a lattice phonon. More generally, this work shows that neutron powder diffraction techniques can be very powerful for investigating structural deformations in small peptide systems.

The magnetic excitations in multiferroic TbMnO3 have been studied by inelastic neutron scattering in the spiral and sinusoidally ordered phases. At the incommensurate magnetic zone center of the spiral phase, we find three low-lying magnons whose character has been fully determined using neutron-polarization analysis. The excitation at the lowest energy is the sliding mode of the spiral, and two modes at 1.1 and 2.5 meV correspond to rotations of the spiral rotation plane. These latter modes are expected to couple to the electric polarization. The 2.5 meV mode is in perfect agreement with recent infrared-spectroscopy data giving strong support to its interpretation as a hybridized phonon-magnon excitation.

Neutron powder diffraction and single crystal x-ray resonant magnetic scattering measurements suggest that Dy plays an active role in enhancing the ferroelectric polarization in multiferroic DyMnO3 above T(Dy)(N)=6.5 K. We observe the evolution of an incommensurate ordering of Dy moments with the same periodicity as the Mn spiral ordering. It closely tracks the evolution of the ferroelectric polarization. Below T(Dy)(N), where Dy spins order commensurately, the polarization decreases to values similar for those of TbMnO3. The higher P(s) found just above T(Dy)(N) arises from the contribution of Dy spins so as to effectively increase the amplitude of the Mn spin spiral.

Using angle-resolved photoemission, we have observed sharp quasiparticlelike peaks in the prototypical layered manganite La(2-2x)Sr(1+2x)Mn(2)O(7) (x=0.36,0.38). We focus on the (pi,0) regions of k space and study their electronic scattering rates and dispersion kinks, uncovering bilayer-split bands, the critical energy scales, momentum scales, and strengths of the interactions that renormalize the electrons. To identify these bosons, we measured phonon dispersions in the energy range of the kink by inelastic neutron scattering, finding a good match in both energy and momentum to the oxygen bond-stretching phonons.

We have studied the superconducting phase diagram of NaxCoO2.yH(2)O as a function of electronic doping, characterizing our samples both in terms of Na content x and the Co valence state. Our findings are consistent with a recent report that intercalation of H3O+ ions into NaxCoO2, together with water, acts as an additional dopant, indicating that Na substoichiometry alone does not control the electronic doping of these materials. We find a superconducting phase diagram where optimal T(C) is achieved through a Co valence range of 3.24-3.35, while T(C) decreases for materials with a higher Co valence. The critical role of dimensionality in achieving superconductivity is highlighted by similarly doped nonsuperconducting anhydrous samples, differing from the superconducting hydrate only in interlayer spacing.

Superconductivity in the high-transition-temperature (high-T(c)) copper oxides competes with other possible ground states. The physical explanation for superconductivity can be constrained by determining the nature of the closest competing ground state, and establishing if that state is universal among the high-T(c) materials. Antiferromagnetism has been theoretically predicted to be the competing ground state. A competing ground state is revealed when superconductivity is destroyed by the application of a magnetic field, and antiferromagnetism has been observed in hole-doped materials under the influence of modest fields. None of the previous experiments have revealed the quantum phase transition from the superconducting state to the antiferromagnetic state, because they failed to reach the upper critical field B(c2). Here we report the results of transport and neutron-scattering experiments on electron-doped Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4 (refs 13, 14), where B(c2) can be reached. The applied field reveals a static, commensurate, anomalously conducting long-range ordered antiferromagnetic state, in which the induced moment scales approximately linearly with the field strength until it saturates at B(c2). This and previous experiments on the hole-doped materials therefore establishes antiferromagnetic order as a competing ground state in the high-T(c) copper oxide materials, irrespective of electron or hole doping.

Neutron scattering measurements on a bilayer manganite near optimal doping show that the short-range polaron correlations are completely dynamic at high T, but then freeze upon cooling to a temperature T(*) approximately equal 310 K. This glass transition suggests that the paramagnetic/insulating state arises from an inherent orbital frustration that inhibits the formation of a long-range orbital- and charge-ordered state. Upon further cooling into the ferromagnetic-metallic state (T(C) = 114 K), where the polarons melt, the diffuse scattering quickly develops into a propagating, transverse optic phonon.

Using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron diffraction, we have studied the magnetic properties of Mn[N(CN)2]2(pyz) (pyz = pyrazine) in detail. The material crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 7.3248(2), b = 16.7369(4), and c = 8.7905 (2) A, beta = 89.596 (2) degrees, V = 1077.65(7) A(3), and Z = 4, as determined by Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction data at 1.35 K. The 5 K neutron powder diffraction data reflect very little variation in the crystal structure. Interpenetrating ReO3-like networks are formed from axially elongated Mn(2+) octahedra and edges made up of mu-bonded [N(CN)2](-) anions and neutral pyz ligands. A three-dimensional antiferromagnetic ordering occurs below T(N) = 2.53(2) K. The magnetic unit cell is double the nuclear one along the a- and c-axes, giving the (1/2, 0, 1/2) superstructure. The crystallographic and antiferromagnetic structures are commensurate and consist of collinear Mn(2+) moments, each with a magnitude of 4.15(6) mu(B) aligned parallel to the a-direction (Mn-pyz-Mn chains). Electronic structure calculations indicate that the exchange interaction is much stronger along the Mn-pyz-Mn chain axis than along the Mn-NCNCN-Mn axes by a factor of approximately 40, giving rise to a predominantly one-dimensional magnetic system. Thus, the variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data are well described by a Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain model, giving g = 2.01(1) and J/k(B) = -0.27(1) K. Owing to single-ion anisotropy of the Mn(2+) ion, field-induced phenomena ascribed to spin-flop and paramagnetic transitions are observed at 0.43 and 2.83 T, respectively.

In situ neutron diffraction experiments show that at pressures above 2 kilobars, cubic zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8) undergoes a quenchable phase transition to an orthorhombic phase, the structure of which has been solved from powder diffraction data. This phase transition can be reversed by heating at 393 kelvin and 1 atmosphere and involves the migration of oxygen atoms in the lattice. The high-pressure phase shows negative thermal expansion from 20 to 300 kelvin. The relative thermal expansion and compressibilities of the cubic and orthorhombic forms can be explained in terms of the "cross-bracing" between polyhedra that occurs as a result of the phase transition.
