International audience; Accurately reconstructing the scale and timing of dynamic processes, such as Middle-Late Pleistocene explosive volcanism and rapid climatic changes, requires rigorous and independent chronological constraints. In this framework, the study of distal volcanic ash layers, or tephra, transported and deposited over wide regions during explosive volcanic eruptions, is increasingly being recognised as a fundamental chronostratigraphic tool for addressing these challenging issues. Here we present a high-resolution distal tephra record preserved in the lacustrine sedimentary succession of the Fucino Basin, central Italy. The investigated record spans the 430-365 ka time interval, covering the entirety of Marine Isotope Stage 11 (MIS 11), and provides important insights into peri-Tyrrhenian potassic explosive volcanism from sources located in central Italy against a backdrop of Mediterranean palaeooclimate records. The succession of ash fall events of this time interval is reconstructed through a detailed lithostratigraphic, geochemical and 40Ar/39Ar geochronological characterization of the deposits preserved as discrete layers in the Fucino F4-F5 sediment core. This work is complemented by similarly detailed characterization of selected proximal pyroclastic units from the peri-Tyrrhenian potassic volcanoes. Geochemical fingerprinting of the tephra deposits by means of their major, minor and trace elements and Sr isotope composition indicates that all the thirty-two investigated ash layers derived from the peri-Tyrrhenian potassic volcanoes. The stratigraphically continuous succession of the Fucino tephra layers allowed the development of a fully independent, 40Ar/39Ar age-constrained, Bayesian age-depth model for the investigated time interval. The age-model allows us to establish modelled ages for the tephra layers within the succession that are not directly dated. The resulting dated tephra record clearly reveals a highly time resolved and previously unparalelled chronicle of explosive activity from the Vulsini, Vico, Sabatini, Colli Albani and Roccamonfina volcanic complexes. Our study provides a benchmark and valuable geochemical and geochronological dataset to be used as a reference for any future development and application of the tephrostratigraphic methods across the central Mediterranean area both during the investigated 430-365 ka time interval, and deeper in time. This contribution underlines the importance of integrating proximal and distal sedimentary records to more accurately establish long-term and comprehensive volcanic eruption records.

Por otra parte, el fraccionamiento de isótopos de Li puede ocurrir a alta temperatura debido a diferencias en su difusividad y al reparto entre minerales y magma. Hasta la fecha, no se han realizado investigaciones de Li sobre productos volcánicos del archipiélago canario para estudiar los procesos magmáticos y la composición del manto de la Tierra. Abstract, Lithium (Li) has two stable isotopes, 7Li (92.4%) and 6Li (7.6%). Their large relative difference in mass can lead to significant isotopic fractionation, especially in low temperature environments. This feature together with its high solubility in aqueous fluids, makes Li isotopes potentially useful tracers of magmatic cooling histories and weathering. On the other hand, Li isotope fractionation can occur at high temperature due to differences in diffusivity as well as partitioning of Li between minerals and melt. To date, no Li investigations have been performed on volcanic products from the Canarian Archipelago in order to study magmatic processes and Earth’s mantle composition. This study acts as a driving factor towards the utilization of the Li-isotope systematics for future studies in the Canary Islands. The Holocene volcanism at El Hierro consists of basaltic monogenetic volcanic fields associated with o the three rift systems present in this island. In this work we report preliminary petrological and geochemical data of Holocene lava flows belonging to the WNW-striking rift. Sampling was focused in three zones: Orchilla, Verodal-Sabinosa, and Tanganasoga. Petrography of the studied lavas shows that they are homogeneous. All samples are porphyritic with macrocrysts of clinopyroxene and olivine immersed in a groundmass formed by microcrysts of plagioclase, Fe-Ti oxides and clinopyroxene. Clinopyroxenes are diopsides, olivines have forsterite contents ranging from 74 to 84 % and anorthite in plagioclase varies from 66 to 76% (labradorite). Whole-rock geochemical results evidence that all magmas are basic in composition, ranging from picrobasalts to phonotephrites. Major, trace elements and isotope support fractional crystallization as the main process of magma evolution. However, petrography and chemistry of clinopyroxene cores agree with a xenocrystic nature of some of them. We suggest that these clinopyroxene cores crystallized from a genetically related magma and subsequently were entrapped or cannibalized by the basic rising magmas. © 2019 Sociedad Geologica de Espana. When archaeometric studies on archaeological ceramics are performed, one of the most important questions asked by archaeologists is the provenance of pottery. This is usually performed by comparing mineropetrographic and chemical composition of ceramics with that of local raw materials (clays, temper), production indicators and appropriate reference groups. Nevertheless, the commonly-used analytical techniques (e.g. OM, SEM-EDS, XRF, ICP-MS) may not always be helpful for the determination of provenance. Indeed, processing of raw materials, such as tempering or levigation, can significantly modify their original chemical composition, sometimes leading to an ineffective identification of raw material resources. For this reason, a pioneering analytical approach has been recently applied by measuring the Sr and Nd isotopic signature. Isotope analysis has largely used in archaeological sciences to date objects and identify their provenance, making it also a useful tool for the determination of provenance of ceramic vessels (De Bonis et al., 2018 and references therein). For this study, 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd isotope ratios were measured on archaeological pottery from Campania and raw materials (clays and volcanic temper) exploited in antiquity for producing ceramics. The analyses were focused on samples from both the Bay of Naples and Southern Campania. The isotope signatures allowed us to better discriminate among different productions and find a strong relationship between the archaeological pottery and the geological sources of raw materials. In order to validate the method, Sr-Nd isotope ratios were also measured for the first time on experimental ceramic materials that replicate archaeological pottery (De Bonis et al., 2018). It was interesting to note that synthetic mixtures used for the ceramic replicas plot exactly on the theoretical mixing curve between the clay and volcanic temper end-members. This suggests that the artificial manipulation of raw materials (firing, levigation, tempering) induces no significant variations to the Sr-Nd isotope fingerprint, which strictly depends on the geochemical affinity of the raw materials. Thus, isotopic analysis can be considered as an effective and robust method that could complement the common multi-analytical approach in order to more precisely constrain potential geological sources for ceramic materials and pottery provenance. Trace element abundance and isotopic composition determinations of distal tephra levels is not currently a routine analysis, so the main objective of this work was to obtain full geochemical and isotopic data on well-known regional markers, aiming at enriching the comparison data-base for future tephrostratigraphic investigations. We chose to work on distal tephra embedded in the San Gregorio Magno (SGM) lacustrine sequence (Campania, Southern Italy) because its high sedimentation rates, should make it easier to avoid the problems linked to the mixing of volcanic fragments related to different explosive events occurred very close in time. Where necessary, due to the lack of data on comparison tephra from literature, marine distal equivalent were also fully characterized. The main tephra layers extracted from both sequences, already characterized as to major element composition (Munno and Petrosino, 2007; Morabito et al.,2014; Petrosino et al., 2016), were analyzed through LA-ICP-MS to evaluate the abundance of trace elements. The isotopic composition has been measured on a hand-picked glass amounts and when possible on minerals. The results of these analyses made it possible to refine some correlations previously hypothesized, as that of sample SGM16, which definitely results the distal counterpart of Monte Epomeo eruption of Ischia Island, aged ca. 55 ka, and well repeats the composition of the widespread tephra marker Y-7. The bimodal composition of layer SGM11 is confirmed by the trace element abundance, and only one of the two compositions (Na2O/K2O ca. 0.45) fully corresponds to that of marker X-5 (ca. 105 ka), here firstly fully characterized in a marine sequence from a Tyrrhenian sea core. The glass fragments displaying a different chemical composition (Na2O/K2O ca. 0.9) are probably the product of the reworking of the slightly older tephra SGM10, the distal counterpart of marker X-6 (ca. 109 ka). Few tephra layers are deeply altered, as evidenced by the high amount of clay minerals found by XRD analyses and for such a reason the results of 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd isotopic analysis on their glasses were not reliable. To bypass the problems linked to secondary alteration, where possible, we analyzed feldspar crystals, less prone than glass to chemical alteration, and obtained better results. In conclusion, the data produced in this work highlight that the full geochemical characterization of tephra levels, integrated by isotopic data, makes it possible to identify their source and, in most cases, to correlate them to a specific well known eruptive event. In the framework of the FISR 2015-2016 “Centro di studio e monitoraggio dei rischi naturali dell’Italia Centrale” project, we carried out a pilot study on the application of the lithium-isotope systematics to selected igneous rocks, in order to shed new light on the nature of subduction components involved in the genesis of magmas feeding the Roman Magmatic Province (Central Italy). On the Earth, the two lithium isotopes, 6Li and 7Li, are susceptible to separation due to their relatively large difference in mass (i.e., fractionation) as natural processes occur. These include mineral formation (chemical precipitation), ion exchange (Li substitutes for Mg and Fe in octahedral sites in clay minerals, with 6Li preferentially substituted over 7Li), and rock alteration. Among the available techniques, Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) is inherently the most precise method for determination of the Li isotope composition. In the last two decades, considerable progress has been made to minimize mass fractionation during TIMS analysis. To date, no Li investigations have been performed on groundwater and volcanic products from the Italian volcanoes to study water-rock interaction and/or magmatic processes, except for Stromboli volcanics. This study acts as a driving factor towards the utilization of the Li-isotope systematics for future studies, and can be considered as a first step towards the realization of a geochemical database including Li isotopes, integrated with the available Sr, Nd, Pb, Hf, B and O isotopes on Italian Plio-Quaternary volcanic rocks. The final aim of this pilot study is to test the application of the Li-isotope systematics to shed new light on the geochemical features of the subduction components involved in the genesis of magmas that fed the activity of Colli Albani Volcanic District (Central Italy; e.g., Gaeta et al., 2016 and references therein). This goal will be achieved by analyzing the Li isotope ratios of well-characterized (chemically and isotopically) samples representative of eruptive products of the district, emplaced in the time window from 600ka to 40ka. The activities carried out include: 1. Set up of the procedures to be adopted in clean chemistry laboratory for extracting Li from natural samples; 2. chromatographic separation of Li in the NIST L-SVEC and USGS BHVO-2 (batch #0759) standard samples, after acid dissolution; 3. Set up of the procedures for measuring Li isotope ratios by TIMS. Com'è noto, nel tratto compreso tra Fondi e Itri la pavimentazione originale della via Appia in pietra calcarea locale venne ricoperta con un basolato in pietra lavica durante il periodo di Caracalla. Il materiale era di origine non autoctona, dal momento che questa parte di tracciato si trova distante diverse decine di chilometri dagli affioramenti dei distretti vulcanici laziali e campani: i Colli Albani, Roccamonfina, la media Valle Latina, il Vesuvio, i Campi Flegrei e le Isole Pontine. Determinare l'area di provenienza del materiale di origine vulcanica con cui venne lastricata la strada implica una serie di considerazioni di natura geologica, archeologica e storica. In questo contributo si presentano i risultati delle analisi chimico-petrografiche ed isotopiche condotte su alcuni campioni di basolato provenienti da punti diversi della via Appia nel tratto in esame (fig. 1a, b), che hanno permesso di caratterizzare la paragenesi mineralogica della roccia e, quindi, di classificarla secondo la nomenclatura geologica avanzando delle ipotesi sulle possibili area di provenienza del materiale analizzato.

We applied Ba diffusion chronometry to sanidine phenocrysts from the trachytic Agnano-Monte Spina eruption (A-MS ~4.7 ka) in order to constrains the time between reactivation and eruption of magma batches in the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc, Napoli, southern Italy), one of the most hazardous volcanic areas on Earth. The A-MS products display variable 87Sr/86Sr and trace elements features that suggest magma mixing between two magma end-members. Resulting zonation patterns in phenocryst minerals are an ideal case to study timescales of magma mobilization at the CFc. Ba zonation profiles of 50 sanidine phenocrysts (Fig. 1) have been determined through combined energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive electron microprobe analyses (EDS-WDS-EMPA). We focused on compositional breaks near the rim of the crystals that represent the last mixing event prior to eruption. Profiles were measured by approaches: (1) quantitative BaO point-measurements at 10 μm spatial resolution, (2) gray-scale swath profiles from accumulated BSE images and (3) Ba X-ray scans. Since Ba dominates the backscattered electron intensities in sanidines, grayscale gradients extracted from the images using ImageJ® are a diffusive tracer proxy. Each profile from the different approaches was interpolated through a non-linear Boltzmann fit curve with Mathematica® software. We always choose the steepest gradients close to the crystal rims. However, any effects from cutting angles or crystal orientation always give longer apparent diffusion times. Our diffusion time estimates are thus minimum values. In recent years, isotopic studies have provided a huge contribution to archaeology. Several studies, carried out in variable localities of the world, have focused their attention on human mobility, to identify non local individuals from ancient burials and reconstruct their migrations, by measuring the strontium isotope ratios (87Sr/86Sr) of their teeth enamel. This method is based on the premise that rocks display variable 87Sr/86Sr ratios depending on several factors associated with the geological characteristics of the site, i.e., age and type of the parent rocks (e.g., Price & Gestsdóttir, 2006; Kenoyer et al., 2013), and original rubidium (Rb) content. The bioavailable Sr present in soil and groundwater is incorporated into local plants and, through the food chain, enters the human body. On this basis, 87Sr/86Sr signatures in human tissue mirror the 87Sr/86Sr values of water, plants and consumed food, which in turn reflect that of bedrock of a given region (Ericson, 1985). In this study, Sr isotope ratios were measured on commercial mineral waters from variable Italian water springs, on soils and plants from the Neapolitan area, and on teeth enamel of children. The latter were born and still live in the Neapolitan area (south Italy), so that constraints on their childhood diet are available. The aim was to discriminate among the contributions of soil, water, food etc., and identify the main one affecting the isotopic signature of teeth enamel. The results of this investigation will be important for human mobility studies because they will allow understanding to which extent Sr isotopes can be effectively used for i) discriminating non-local from local individuals, and ii) assessing the effects on the modern society of a diet based on food from different geographic areas. The Zaro lava complex, located on the western sector of the Ischia volcanic island (Gulf of Naples, southern Italy), is the product of one of the few effusive eruptions occurred in the last period of activity (< 5 ka). The complex is made up of a white trachytic main lava flow (Zaro lava s.s.), hosting rounded-shaped enclaves of both mafic (shoshonite) and felsic (trachyte) composition. Major and trace elements and isotopic (87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd) data have been acquired on whole rocks and separated minerals. Mafic enclaves (Mg# = 60-62, CaO = 7.71-8.31 wt%, Cr =117-143 ppm, Ni = 52-61 ppm, Zr =150-164 ppm, Sr = 503-526 ppm, LREE enriched compared to HREE) have low 87Sr/86Sr (0.70495- 0.70501) and high 143Nd/144Nd (0.51268-0.51269). Trachytic lavas and felsic enclaves (SiO2 = 60.61-61.71 wt%, K2O = 6.51-7.43 wt%, Na2O = 5.00-6.83 wt%, Rb = 243-428 ppm, Sr = 90-158 ppm, Zr = 385-773 ppm) exhibit higher 87Sr/86Sr (0.70608-0.70615) and lower 143Nd/144Nd (0.51255-0.51256). The strong isotopic difference between mafic enclaves and trachytes rules out a simple crystallization process for the variable facies of the Zaro lava complex. Moreover, in mafic enclaves petrochemical and possibly isotopic disequilibria between phenocrysts and their host rocks suggest occurrence of mingling processes or crystals entrapment from a distinct magmatic phase: indeed, many clinopyroxene and feldspar crystals are in chemical equilibrium with more evolved compositions (trachytic to trachyphonolitic). Trachytic lavas and felsic enclaves are chemically similar and do not display isotopic disequilibria between phenocrysts and host rocks. The last 5 ka of volcanic activity at Ischia were characterized by emplacement of products resulting from interaction between chemically and isotopically distinct batches of magma (Cava Nocelle, Vateliero and Molara; D’Antonio et al., 2013). Although these products show features comparable to those of the Zaro mafic enclaves, the last have significantly lower Sr and higher Nd isotopic ratios. Therefore, enrichment processes, such as assimilation of continental crust or mantle contamination in different conditions, should be invoked to justify the difference in isotopic features. Additionally, although the two evolved facies of the Zaro lavas have comparable chemical compositions and “uniform” isotopic signature, field analysis shows evidence of mingling between similar magmas with different viscosities. An investigation through Sr-He-O isotopes and major oxides was carried out on Mg-rich olivine and clinopyroxene phenocrysts from a selection of volcanic rocks of the Neapolitan Volcanoes (southern Italy), which include Somma- Vesuvius, Phlegraean Fields, and the islands of Ischia and Procida. The data produced in the present work extend the Sr-He-O dataset available for the Neapolitan volcanic districts (e.g., Graham et al., 1993; Martelli et al., 2004; Di Renzo et al., 2011; D’Antonio et al., 2013; Iovine et al., 2017), improving the knowledge especially on helium isotopic compositions of the Mt. Somma rocks, never analysed before. 3He/4He ratios (2.60-5.12 R/RA) of the investigated Mgrich phenocrysts are markedly lower than those measured at most volcanic arcs worldwide, and are among the lowest measured in subduction zones. This range of 3He/4He is coupled with quite large ranges of 87Sr/86Sr (0.704882 – 0.708480) and δ18O (4.85 – 6.70‰) measured in the same mafic minerals. The 3He/4He values, and the lowest measured Sr- and O-isotope ratios, do not suggest significant crustal or fluid contamination occurred during magmatic evolution, and they should reflect the composition of the metasomatized mantle beneath the Neapolitan region. Moreover, these values display a clear geographic trend, with radiogenic 4He-87Sr, and 18O generally increasing in on-lands districts. The results of these investigations are expected to allow us to better understand the original characteristics of the mantle source(s), and to define those of other components, likely originated in the continental crust, that were involved in the genesis of the primitive magmas feeding the Neapolitan volcanoes. El volcanismo holoceno en el Hierro está formado por campos volcánicos monogenéticos asociados a las tres estructuras de tipo rift que modelan la isla. En ese trabajo se presentan los resultados petrológicos y geoquímicos preliminares de las lavas Holocenas del rift ONO. El muestreo se concentró en tres zonas: Orchilla, Verodal-Sabinosa y Tanganasoga. La petrografía de las lavas estudiadas muestra que son bastante homogéneas. Todas las lavas son porfídicas con macrocristales de clinopiroxeno y olivino inmersos en una matriz formada por microcristales de plagioclasa, óxidos de Fe-Ti y clinopiroxeno. Los clinopiroxenos son diópsiodos, los olivinos presenten contenidos en forsterita que varían entre 74 y 84% forsteritas, y el contenido en anortita en las plagioclasas varía entre 66 y 76% (labradorita). Los resultados geoquímicos de roca total evidencian que todos los magmas son básicos con composiciones que varían entre picrobasaltos y fonotefritas. Los elementos mayoritarios, trazas e isótopos sugieren que la cristalización fraccionada es el principal proceso. Aun así, la petrografía y química de los núcleos de los clinopiroxenos sugieren que algunos de ellos son xenocristales. Se sugiere que estos núcleos cristalizaron a partir de un magma genéticamente relacionado y que posteriormente fueron atrapados o canibalizados por el magma básico en ascenso.
