1. Black brookite rich in oxygen vacancies as an active photocatalyst for CO2 conversion: experiments and first-principles calculations

Abstract

Photocatalytic CO2 conversion is a clean technology to deal with CO2 emissions, and titanium oxide (TiO2) polymorphs are the most investigated photocatalysts for such an application. In this study, black TiO2 brookite is produced by a high-pressure torsion (HPT) method and employed as an active photocatalyst for CO2 conversion. Black brookite with a large concentration of lattice defects (vacancies, dislocations and grain boundaries) showed enhanced light absorbance, narrowed optical bandgap and diminished recombination rate of electrons and holes. The photocatalytic activity of the black oxide for CO2 conversion was higher compared to commercial brookite and benchmark P25 catalyst powders. First-principles calculations suggested that the presence of oxygen vacancies in black brookite is effective not only for reducing optical bandgap but also for providing active sites for the adsorption of CO2 on the surface of TiO2.

Abstract

High-entropy oxides (HEOs), as multi-component ceramics with high configurational entropy, have been of recent interest due to their attractive properties including photocatalytic activity for H2 production and CO2 conversion. However, the photocatalytic activity of HEOs is still limited to ultraviolet light. In this study, to achieve visible-light-driven photocatalysis, 10 different heterojunctions were simultaneously introduced in the Ti-Zr-Nb-Ta-W-O system. The oxide, which was synthesized by a high-pressure torsion method and oxidation, successfully produced oxygen from water under visible light without co-catalyst addition. The photocatalytic performance was attributed to high visible-light absorption, narrow bandgap, appropriate band structure, presence of multiple heterojunctions and accordingly easy electron-hole separation and slow recombination. These results not only show the potential of high-entropy oxides as new visible-light-active photocatalysts, but also introduce the multiple-heterojunction introduction as a strategy to achieve photocatalysis under visible light.

Abstract

High-entropy oxides (HEOs), as a new family of materials with five or more principal cations, have shown promising properties for various applications. In this work and inspired by inherent defective and strained structure of HEOs, photocatalytic CO2 conversion is examined on a dual-phase TiZrNbHfTaO11 synthesized by a two-step high-pressure torsion mechanical alloying and high-temperature oxidation. The HEO, which had various structural defects, showed simultaneous photocatalytic activity for CO2 to CO and H2O to H2 conversion without the addition of a co-catalyst. The photocatalytic activity of this HEO for CO2 conversion was better than conventional photocatalysts such as anatase TiO2 and BiVO4 and similar to P25 TiO2. The high activity of HEO was discussed in terms of lattice defects, lattice strain, light absorbance, band structure, photocurrent generation and charge carrier mobility to activation centers. The current study confirms the high potential of HEOs as a new family of photocatalysts for CO2 conversion.

Abstract

The effect of carbon coating on a surface structure of a high-dose implanted/annealed silicon carbide (SiC) during annealing was examined using scanning probe microscopy (SPM), deep-ultraviolet (DUV) Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In SPM, the surfaces of 500- and 30 °C-implanted/annealed SiC samples without coating exhibited a periodic-step structure and granular structure, respectively. The difference between these surfaces is attributed to the absence or presence of residual implantation damage. In contrast, surface flatness was maintained in the 500 °C-implanted/annealed SiC sample with carbon coating. However, the surface of the coated 30 °C-implanted/annealed SiC sample exhibited a geometric structure with a lattice pattern parallel to the ⟨ 11 2 ¯ 0 ⟩ axes. The DUV Raman spectra and TEM images indicated that the implanted layer of this sample metamorphosed into a mixture of 3C-SiC twin domains and amorphous-SiC regions. During the cooling process after annealing, the 3C-SiC region was more raised than the amorphous-SiC region owing to the difference in the thermal expansion coefficients, thus resulting in the generation of a geometric surface structure. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Maternal dietary exposures are considered to influence the development of infant allergies through changes in the composition of breast milk. Cohort studies have shown that ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in breast milk may have a beneficial effect on the preventing of allergies in infants; however, the underlying mechanisms remain to be investigated. We investigated how the maternal intake of dietary ω3 PUFAs affects fatty acid profiles in the breast milk and their pups and reduced the incidence of allergic diseases in the pups. METHODS: Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) induced by 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) and fluorescein isothiocyanate was applied to the skin in pups reared by mother maintained with diets mainly containing ω3 or ω6 PUFAs. Skin inflammation, immune cell populations, and expression levels of immunomodulatory molecules in pups and/or human cell line were investigated by using flow cytometric, immunohistologic, and quantitative RT-PCR analyses. ω3 PUFA metabolites in breast milk and infants serum were evaluated by lipidomics analysis using LC-MS/MS. RESULTS: We show that maternal intake of linseed oil, containing abundant ω3 α-linolenic acid, resulted in the increased levels of ω3 docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and its 14-lipoxygenation products in the breast milk of mouse dams; these metabolites increased the expression of TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) on plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) in their pups and thus inhibited infant CHS. Indeed, the administration of DPA-derived 14-lipoxygenation products to mouse pups ameliorated their DNFB CHS. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that an inhibitory mechanism in infant skin allergy is induced through maternal metabolism of dietary ω3 PUFAs in mice.

Abstract

Entamoeba histolytica is a protozoan parasite belonging to the phylum Amoebozoa that causes amebiasis, a global public health problem. E. histolytica alternates its form between a proliferative trophozoite and a dormant cyst. Trophozoite proliferation is closely associated with amebiasis symptoms and pathogenesis whereas cysts transmit the disease. Drugs are available for clinical use; however, they have issues of adverse effects and dual targeting of disease symptoms and transmission remains to be improved. Development of new drugs is therefore urgently needed. An untargeted lipidomics analysis recently revealed structural uniqueness of the Entamoeba lipidome at different stages of the parasite's life cycle involving very long (26–30 carbons) and/or medium (8–12 carbons) acyl chains linked to glycerophospholipids and sphingolipids. Here, we investigated the physiology of this unique acyl chain diversity in Entamoeba, a non-photosynthetic protist. We characterized E. histolytica fatty acid elongases (EhFAEs), which are typically components of the fatty acid elongation cycle of photosynthetic protists and plants. An approach combining genetics and lipidomics revealed that EhFAEs are involved in the production of medium and very long acyl chains in E. histolytica. This approach also showed that the K3 group herbicides, flufenacet, cafenstrole, and fenoxasulfone, inhibited the production of very long acyl chains, thereby impairing Entamoeba trophozoite proliferation and cyst formation. Importantly, none of these three compounds showed toxicity to a human cell line; therefore, EhFAEs are reasonable targets for developing new anti-amebiasis drugs and these compounds are promising leads for such drugs. Interestingly, in the Amoebazoan lineage, gain and loss of the genes encoding two different types of fatty acid elongase have occurred during evolution, which may be relevant to parasite adaptation. Acyl chain diversity in lipids is therefore a unique and indispensable feature for parasitic adaptation of Entamoeba. Author summary: Entamoeba, a protozoan parasite, thrives in its niche by alternating its form between a proliferative trophozoite and a dormant cyst. Entamoeba parasites were recently shown to generate lipid acyl chain diversity throughout their life cycle. Here, we provide insight into the mechanism generating this acyl chain diversity and its importance in maintaining the parasite's life cycle. We also show that the E. histolytica isozymes responsible for generating this diversity are reasonable targets for developing new anti-amebiasis drugs, and that the herbicides, flufenacet, cafenstrole, and fenoxasulfone, are promising leads for such drugs. Abstract

Human blood is a self-regenerating lipid-rich biological fluid that is routinely collected in hospital settings. The inventory of lipid molecules found in blood plasma (plasma lipidome) offers insights into individual metabolism and physiology in health and disease. Disturbances in the plasma lipidome also occur in conditions that are not directly linked to lipid metabolism; therefore, plasma lipidomics based on MS is an emerging tool in an array of clinical diagnostics and disease management. However, challenges exist in the translation of such lipidomic data to clinical applications. These relate to the reproducibility, accuracy, and precision of lipid quantitation, study design, sample handling, and data sharing. This position paper emerged from a workshop that initiated a community-led process to elaborate and define a set of generally accepted guidelines for quantitative MS-based lipidomics of blood plasma or serum, with harmonization of data acquired on different instrumentation platforms across independent laboratories as an ultimate goal. We hope that other fields may benefit from and follow such a precedent.
