We study pre-supernova feedback in a sample of $\sim$ 4700 HII regions in the nearby spiral galaxy M83, identified on their H$\alpha$ emission. We pectroscopically identify Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars populating the star-forming regions. For each HII region, we compute the pressure of ionised gas ($P_{\rm ion}$) and the direct radiation pressure ($P_{\rm dir}$) acting in the region, and investigate how they vary with galactocentric distance, with the physical properties of the region, and with the pressure of the galactic environment ($P_\mathrm{DE}$). For a subset of $\sim$ 500 regions, we also investigate the link between the pressure terms and the properties of the cluster population (age, mass, and LyC flux). We find that $P_{\rm ion}$ dominates over $P_{\rm dir}$ by at least a factor of 10 on average over the disk. Both pressure terms are strongly enhanced and become almost comparable in the central starburst region. In the disk ($R \geq 0.15~R_e$), we observe that $P_{\rm dir}$ stays approximately constant with galactocentric distance. $P_{\rm dir}$ is positively correlated with an increase in radiation field strength (linked to the negative metallicity gradient in the galaxy), while it decreases in low extinction regions. $P_{\rm ion}$ decreases constantly for increasing galactocentric distances. In general, we observe that HII regions near the center are underpressured with respect to their surroundings, whereas regions in the disk are overpressured and hence expanding. We find that regions hosting younger clusters or having more mass in young star clusters have a higher internal pressure, indicating that clustered star formation is likely playing a dominant role in setting the pressure. Finally, we estimate that only 13 % of HII regions hosting young clusters and WR stars have $f_{\rm esc} \geq 0$.[Abridged], Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

The majority of massive stars ($>8$ $\rm{M_{\odot}}$) in OB associations are found in close binary systems. Nonetheless, the formation mechanism of these close massive binaries is not understood yet. Using literature data, we measured the radial-velocity dispersion ($\sigma_\mathrm{RV}$) as a proxy for the close binary fraction in ten OB associations in the Galaxy and the Large Magellanic Cloud, spanning an age range from 1 to 6 Myrs. We find a positive trend of this dispersion with the cluster's age, which is consistent with binary hardening. Assuming a universal binary fraction of $f_\mathrm{bin}$ = 0.7, we converted the $\sigma_\mathrm{RV}$ behavior to an evolution of the minimum orbital period $P_\mathrm{cutoff}$ from $\sim$9.5 years at 1 Myr to $\sim$1.4 days for the oldest clusters in our sample at $\sim$6 Myr. Our results suggest that binaries are formed at larger separations, and they harden in around 1 to 2 Myrs to produce the period distribution observed in few million year-old OB binaries. Such an inward migration may either be driven by an interaction with a remnant accretion disk or with other young stellar objects present in the system. We use high quality VLT/MUSE data to study the kinematics and the ionized gas properties of Haro 11, a well known starburst merger system and the closest confirmed Lyman continuum leaking galaxy. We present results from integrated line maps, and from maps in three velocity bins comprising the blueshifted, systemic and redshifted emission. The kinematic analysis reveals complex velocities resulting from the interplay of virial motions and momentum feedback. Star formation happens intensively in three compact knots (knots A, B and C), but one, knot C, dominates the energy released in supernovae. The halo is characterised by low gas density and extinction, but with large temperature variations, coincident with fast shock regions. Moreover, we find large temperature discrepancies in knot C, when using different temperature-sensitive lines. The relative impact of the knots in the metal enrichment differs. While knot B is strongly enriching its closest surrounding, knot C is likely the main distributor of metals in the halo. In knot A, part of the metal enriched gas seems to escape through low density channels towards the south. We compare the metallicities from two methods and find large discrepancies in knot C, a shocked area, and the highly ionized zones, that we partially attribute to the effect of shocks. This work shows, that traditional relations developed from averaged measurements or simplified methods, fail to probe the diverse conditions of the gas in extreme environments. The inner regions of the discs of high-mass young stellar objects (HMYSOs) are still poorly known due to the small angular scales and the high visual extinction involved. We deploy near-infrared (NIR) spectro-interferometry to probe the inner gaseous disc in HMYSOs and investigate the origin and physical characteristics of the CO bandhead emission (2.3-2.4 $\mu$m). We present the first GRAVITY/VLTI observations at high spectral (R=4000) and spatial (mas) resolution of the CO overtone transitions in NGC 2024 IRS2. The continuum emission is resolved in all baselines and is slightly asymmetric, displaying small closure phases ($\leq$8$^{\circ}$). Our best ellipsoid model provides a disc inclination of 34$^{\circ}$$\pm$1$^{\circ}$, a disc major axis position angle of 166$^{\circ}$$\pm$1$^{\circ}$, and a disc diameter of 3.99$\pm$0.09 mas (or 1.69$\pm$0.04 au, at a distance of 423 pc). The small closure phase signals in the continuum are modelled with a skewed rim, originating from a pure inclination effect. For the first time, our observations spatially and spectrally resolve the first four CO bandheads. Changes in visibility, as well as differential and closure phases across the bandheads are detected. Both the size and geometry of the CO-emitting region are determined by fitting a bidimensional Gaussian to the continuum-compensated CO bandhead visibilities. The CO-emitting region has a diameter of 2.74$\pm^{0.08}_{0.07}$ mas (1.16$\pm$0.03 au), and is located in the inner gaseous disc, well within the dusty rim, with inclination and $PA$ matching the dusty disc geometry, which indicates that both dusty and gaseous discs are coplanar. Physical and dynamical gas conditions are inferred by modelling the CO spectrum. Finally, we derive a direct measurement of the stellar mass of $M_*\sim$14.7$^{+2}_{-3.6}$ M$_{\odot}$ by combining our interferometric and spectral modelling results., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A letters

Understanding the escape of ionizing (Lyman continuum) photons from galaxies is vital for determining how galaxies contributed to reionization in the early universe. While directly detecting Lyman continuum from high redshift galaxies is impossible due to the intergalactic medium, low redshift galaxies in principle offer this possibility, but requirie observations from space. The first local galaxy for which Lyman continuum escape was found is Haro11 , a luminous blue compact galaxy at z=0.02, where observations with the FUSE satellite revealed an escape fraction of 3.3 %. However the FUSE aperture covers the entire galaxy, and it is not clear from where the Lyman continuum is leaking out. Here we utilize HST/COS spectroscopy in the wavelength range 1100-1700 A of the three knots (A, B, and C) of Haro11 to study the presence of Ly-$\alpha$ emission and the properties of intervening gas. We find that all knots have bright Ly-$\alpha$ emission. UV absorption lines, originating in the neutral interstellar medium, as well as lines probing the ionized medium, are seen extending to blue shifted velocities of 500 km/s in all three knots, demonstrating the presence of an outflowing multiphase medium. We find that knots A and B have large covering fractions of neutral gas, making LyC escape along these sightlines improbable, while knot C has a much lower covering fraction ($\lesssim50$%). Knot C also has the the highest Ly-$\alpha$ escape fraction and we conclude that it is the most likely source of the escaping Lyman continuum detected in Haro11., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the key scientific questions that can be addressed by GMOX, a Multi-Object Spectrograph selected for feasibility study as a 4th generation instrument for the Gemini telescopes. Using commercial digital micro-mirror devices (DMDs) as slit selection mechanisms, GMOX can observe hundreds of sources at R~5000 between the U and K band simultaneously. Exploiting the narrow PSF delivered by the Gemini South GeMS MCAO module, GMOX can synthesize slits as small as 40mas reaching extremely faint magnitude limits, and thus enabling a plethora of applications and innovative science. Our main scientific driver in developing GMOX has been Resolving galaxies through cosmic time: GMOX 40mas slit (at GeMS) corresponds to 300 pc at z ~ 1:5, where the angular diameter distance reaches its maximum, and therefore to even smaller linear scales at any other redshift. This means that GMOX can take spectra of regions smaller than 300 pc in the whole observable Universe, allowing to probe the growth and evolution of galaxies with unprecedented detail. GMOXs multi-object capability and high angular resolution enable efficient studies of crowded fields, such as globular clusters, the Milky Way bulge, the Magellanic Clouds, Local Group galaxies and galaxy clusters. The wide-band simultaneous coverage and the very fast slit configuration mechanisms also make GMOX ideal for follow-up of LSST transients.

Massive stars form on different scales ranging from large, dispersed OB associations to compact, dense starburst clusters. The complex structure of regions of massive star formation, and the involved short timescales provide a challenge for our understanding of their birth and early evolution. As one of the most massive and luminous star-forming region in our Galaxy, W49 is the ideal place to study the formation of the most massive stars. By classifying the massive young stars deeply embedded into the molecular cloud of W49, we aim to investigate and trace the star formation history of this region. We analyse near-infrared $K$-band spectroscopic observations of W49 from LBT/LUCI combined with $JHK$ images obtained with NTT/SOFI and LBT/LUCI. Based on $JHK$-band photometry and K-band spectroscopy the massive stars are placed in a Hertzsprung Russell diagram. By comparison with evolutionary models, their age and hence the star formation history of W49 can be investigated. Fourteen O type stars as well as two young stellar objects (YSOs) are identified by our spectroscopic survey. Eleven O-stars are main sequence stars with subtypes ranging from O3 to O9.5, with masses ranging from $\sim 20$ $M_{\odot}$ to $\sim 120$ $M_{\odot}$. Three of the O-stars show strong wind features, and are considered to be Of-type supergiants with masses beyond 100 $M_{\odot}$ . The two YSOs show CO emission, indicative for the presence of circumstellar disks in the central region of the massive cluster. The age of the cluster is estimated as $\sim1.5$ Myr, with star formation still ongoing in different parts of the region. The ionising photons from the central massive stars have not yet cleared the molecular cocoon surrounding the cluster. W49 is comparable to extragalactic star-forming regions and provides us with an unique possibility to study a starburst in detail., 16 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables. Accepted for publication in A&A

The stellar content of young massive star clusters emit large amounts of Lyman continuum photons and inject momentum into the inter stellar medium (ISM) by the strong stellar winds of the most massive stars in the cluster. When the most massive stars explode as supernovae, large amounts of mechanical energy are injected in the ISM. A detailed study of the ISM around these massive cluster provides insights on the effect of cluster feedback. We present high quality integral field spectroscopy taken with VLT/MUSE of two starburst galaxies: ESO 338-IG04 and Haro 11. Both galaxies contain a significant number of super star clusters. The MUSE data provide us with an unprecedented view of the state and kinematics of the ionized gas in the galaxy allowing us to study the effect of stellar feedback on small and large spatial scales. We present our recent results on studying the ISM state of these two galaxies. The data of both galaxies show that the mechanical and ionization feedback of the super star clusters in the galaxy modify the state and kinematics of the ISM substancially by creating highly ionized bubbles around the cluster, making the central part of the galaxy highly ionized. High-quality K-band spectra of strongly reddened point sources, deeply embedded in (ultra-) compact HII regions, have revealed a population of 20 young massive stars showing no photospheric absorption lines, but sometimes strong Br-gamma emission. The Br-gamma equivalent widths occupy a wide range (from about 1 to over 100 A); the line widths of 100-200 km/s indicate a circumstellar rather than a nebular origin. The K-band spectra exhibit one or more features commonly associated with massive young stellar objects (YSOs) surrounded by circumstellar material: a very red colour (J-K) > 2, CO bandhead emission, hydrogen emission lines (sometimes doubly peaked), and FeII and/or MgII emission lines. The massive YSO distribution in the CMD suggests that the majority of the objects are of similar spectral type as the Herbig Be stars, but some of them are young O stars. The CO emission must come from a relatively dense (~10^{10} cm^{-3}) and hot (T~ 2000-5000 K) region, sufficiently shielded from the intense UV radiation field of the young massive star. The hydrogen emission is produced in an ionised medium exposed to UV radiation. The best geometrical solution is a dense and neutral circumstellar disk causing the CO bandhead emission, and an ionised upper layer where the hydrogen lines are produced. We present arguments that the circumstellar disk is more likely a remnant of the accretion process than the result of rapid rotation and mass loss such as in Be/B[e] stars., 19 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the observation of hot water vapor (steam) in the inner AU of a young massive star located in the star-forming region IRAS 08576-4334. The water lines are detected in a medium resolution (R=10,000) K-band spectrum taken by the infrared spectrometer ISAAC mounted on the VLT-ANTU. The water vapor is at a mean temperature of 1565+/-510 K, cooler than the hot CO found in the same object, which is at 1660K and the column density is N(H2O)=(2.5 +/- 0.4)x1E18 cm-2. The profile of both H2O and CO lines is best reproduced by the emission from a Keplerian disk. To interpret the data, we also investigate the formation of molecules and especially CO and water vapor in the inner hot and dense part of disks around young high mass stars using a pseudo time-dependent gas-phase chemical model. Molecules are rapidly photodissociated but this destruction is compensated by an efficient formation due to fast neutral-neutral reactions. The ability of CO molecules to self-shield significantly enhances its abundance. Water molecules are sufficiently abundant to be detectable. The observed H2O/CO ratio is reproduced by gas at 1600K and an enhanced UV field over gas density ratio I_UV/nH=1E(-4)- 1E(-6). The simulations support the presence of CO and H2O molecules in the inner disks around young massive stars despite the strong UV radiation and show that the OH radical plays an essential role in hot gas chemistry., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to A&A

We present observations of CO overtone bandhead emission toward four massive Young Stellar Objects (spectral type O6--B5). The high signal-to-noise ratio K-band spectra were obtained with VLT-ISAAC at a resolution of 30 km/s, sufficient to resolve the bandheads, but not the individual J-lines. We are able to explain the shape of the lines by assuming a simple isothermal keplerian disk model seen at different inclinations. The gas temperature ranges from 1500 to 4500 K and the CO column density is between 0.1 and 4 10^21 cm^-2. The emission probably arises within the first few astronomical units of the disk, consistent with the high gas temperature. Our results indicate that molecules can survive close to a hot star and suggest that dense (n_H > 10^10 cm^-3) inner disks may be relatively common at an advanced stage of high-mass star formation., accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

A high quality, medium-resolution K-band spectrum has been obtained of the ultracompact HII region G29.96-0.02 with the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The slit was positioned along the symmetry axis of the cometary shaped nebula. Besides the spectrum of the embedded ionizing O star, the long-slit observation revealed the rich emission-line spectrum produced by the ionized nebula with sub-arcsec spatial resolution. The nebular spectrum includes Br$\gamma$, several helium emission lines and a molecular hydrogen line. A detailed analysis is presented of the variation in strength, velocity and width of the nebular emission lines along the slit. The results are consistent with previous observations, but the much better spatial resolution allows a critical evaluation of models explaining the cometary shape of the nebula. Our observations support neither the wind bow shock model nor the champagne flow model. The measured line ratios of the nebular hydrogen and helium lines are compared to predictions from case B recombination-line theory. The results indicate an electron temperature between 6400 and 7500 K, in good agreement with other determinations and the Galactocentric distance of 4.6 kpc. The He$^{+}$/H$^{+}$ ratio is practically constant over the slit; we argue that He is singly ionized throughout the nebula. We review the various observational constraints on the effective temperature of the ionizing star and show that these are in agreement with its K-band spectral type of O5-O6V., Comment: 15 pages including 11 figures and 2 tables, LaTex, A&A style. Near-infrared, spectroscopic studies of central ionizing sources of very young H ii regions is presented in conjunction with a recently available, sophisticated atmospheric code to constrain the physical conditions and environment of very massive stars at very early stages of evolution. Combining high quality near-infrared spectroscopy of very young massive stars with model atmosphere calculations should allow for the most accurate quantitative determination of Teff, rotation, L, and log g, and to search for binaries and possible disk or in-fall signatures in forming or recently formed massive stars. These characteristics make up a vital boundary condition constraining theories on massive star formation.

The spatial variations in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) band intensities are normally attributed to the physical conditions of the emitting PAHs, however in recent years it has been suggested that such variations are caused mainly by extinction. To resolve this question, we have obtained near-infrared (NIR), mid-infrared (MIR), and radio observations of the compact H II region IRAS 12063-6259. We use these data to construct multiple independent extinction maps and also to measure the main PAH features (6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 {$μ$}m) in the MIR. Three extinction maps are derived: the first using the NIR hydrogen lines and case B recombination theory; the second combining the NIR data with radio data; and the third making use of the Spitzer/IRS MIR observations to measure the 9.8 {$μ$}m silicate absorption feature using the Spoon method and PAHFIT (as the depth of this feature can be related to overall extinction). The silicate absorption over the bright, southern component of IRAS 12063-6259 is almost absent while the other methods find significant extinction. While such breakdowns of the relationship between the NIR extinction and the 9.8 {$μ$}m absorption have been observed in molecular clouds, they have never been observed for H II regions. We then compare the PAH intensity variations in the Spitzer/IRS data after dereddening to those found in the original data. It was found that in most cases, the PAH band intensity variations persist even after dereddening, implying that extinction is not the main cause of the PAH band intensity variations.

Massive stars play a dominant role in the process of clustered star formation, with their feedback into the molecular cloud through ionizing radiation, stellar winds and outflows. The formation process of massive stars is poorly constrained because of their scarcity, the short formation timescale and obscuration. By obtaining a census of the newly formed stellar population, the star formation history of the young cluster and the role of the massive stars within it can be unraveled. We aim to reconstruct the formation history of the young stellar population of the massive star-forming region RCW 36. We study several dozens of individual objects, both photometrically and spectroscopically, look for signs of multiple generations of young stars and investigate the role of the massive stars in this process. We obtain a census of the physical parameters and evolutionary status of the young stellar population. Using a combination of near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy we estimate ages and masses of individual objects. We identify the population of embedded young stellar objects (YSO) by their infrared colors and emission line spectra. RCW 36 harbors a stellar population of massive and intermediate-mass stars located around the center of the cluster. Class 0/I and II sources are found throughout the cluster. The central population has a median age of 1.1 +/- 0.6 Myr. Of the stars which could be classified, the most massive ones are situated in the center of the cluster. The central cluster is surrounded by filamentary cloud structures; within these, some embedded and accreting YSOs are found. Our age determination is consistent with the filamentary structures having been shaped by the ionizing radiation and stellar winds of the central massive stars. We present integral field spectroscopic observations with the Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer of all 14 galaxies in the $z\sim 0.1$ Lyman Alpha Reference Sample (LARS). We produce 2D line of sight velocity maps and velocity dispersion maps from the Balmer $\alpha$ (H$\alpha$) emission in our data cubes. These maps trace the spectral and spatial properties of the LARS galaxies' intrinsic Ly$\alpha$ radiation field. We show our kinematic maps spatially registered onto the Hubble Space Telescope H$\alpha$ and Lyman $\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) images. Only for individual galaxies a causal connection between spatially resolved H$\alpha$ kinematics and Ly$\alpha$ photometry can be conjectured. However, no general trend can be established for the whole sample. Furthermore, we compute non-parametric global kinematical statistics -- intrinsic velocity dispersion $\sigma_0$, shearing velocity $v_\mathrm{shear}$, and the $v_\mathrm{shear}/\sigma_0$ ratio -- from our kinematic maps. In general LARS galaxies are characterised by high intrinsic velocity dispersions (54\,km\,s$^{-1}$ median) and low shearing velocities (65\,km\,s$^{-1}$ median). $v_\mathrm{shear}/\sigma_0$ values range from 0.5 to 3.2 with an average of 1.5. Noteworthy, five galaxies of the sample are dispersion dominated systems with $v_\mathrm{shear}/\sigma_0 1$. Our result indicates that turbulence in actively star-forming systems is causally connected to interstellar medium conditions that favour an escape of Ly$\alpha$ radiation., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Recent studies of massive-star forming regions indicate that they can contain multiple generations of young stars. These observations suggest that star formation in these regions is sequential and/or triggered by a previous generation of (massive) stars. Here we present new observations of the star forming region RCW 36 in the Vela Molecular Ridge, hosting a young cluster of massive stars embedded in a molecular cloud complex. In the periphery of the cluster several young stellar objects (YSOs) are detected which produce bipolar jets (HH 1042 and HH 1043) demonstrating that these objects are still actively accreting. The VLT/X-shooter spectrum of the jet structure of HH 1042 provides detailed information on the physical conditions and kinematical properties of the jet plasma. From this information the YSO's accretion history can be derived. We observed three high-mass star-forming regions in the W3 high-mass star formation complex with the Submillimeter Array and IRAM 30 m telescope. These regions, i.e. W3 SMS1 (W3 IRS5), SMS2 (W3 IRS4) and SMS3, are in different evolutionary stages and are located within the same large-scale environment, which allows us to study rotation and outflows as well as chemical properties in an evolutionary sense. While we find multiple mm continuum sources toward all regions, these three sub-regions exhibit different dynamical and chemical properties, which indicates that they are in different evolutionary stages. Even within each subregion, massive cores of different ages are found, e.g. in SMS2, sub-sources from the most evolved UCHII region to potential starless cores exist within 30 000 AU of each other. Outflows and rotational structures are found in SMS1 and SMS2. Evidence for interactions between the molecular cloud and the HII regions is found in the 13CO channel maps, which may indicate triggered star formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 22 pages, 23 figures

We present near-infrared JHKs imaging as well as K-band multi-object spectroscopy of the massive stellar content of W3 Main using LUCI at the LBT. We confirm 13 OB stars by their absorption line spectra in W3 Main and spectral types between O5V and B4V have been found. Three massive Young Stellar Objects are identified by their emission line spectra and near-infrared excess. From our spectrophotometric analysis of the massive stars and the nature of their surrounding HII regions we derive the evolutionary sequence of W3 Main and we find evidence of an age spread of at least 2-3 Myr. While the most massive star (IRS2) is already evolved, indications for high-mass pre--main-sequence evolution is found for another star (IRS N1), deeply embedded in an ultra compact HII region, in line with the different evolutionary phases observed in the corresponding HII regions. We have detected the photospheres of OB stars from the more evolved diffuse HII region to the much younger UCHII regions, suggesting that the OB stars have finished their formation and cleared away their possible circumstellar disks very fast. To understand evolutionary and environmental effects during the formation of high-mass stars, we observed three regions of massive star formation at different evolutionary stages that reside in the same natal molecular cloud. Methods. The three regions S255IR, S255N and S255S were observed at 1.3 mm with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) and followup short spacing information was obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope. Near infrared (NIR) H + K-band spectra and continuum observations were taken for S255IR with VLT-SINFONI to study the different stellar populations in this region. The combination of millimeter (mm) and near infrared data allow us to characterize different stellar populations within the young forming cluster in detail. While we find multiple mm continuum sources toward all regions, their outflow, disk and chemical properties vary considerably. The most evolved source S255IR exhibits a collimated bipolar outflow visible in CO and H2 emission, the outflows from the youngest region S255S are still small and rather confined in the regions of the mm continuum peaks. Also the chemistry toward S255IR is most evolved exhibiting strong emission from complex molecules, while much fewer molecular lines are detected in S255N, and in S255S we detect only CO isotopologues and SO lines. Also, rotational structures are found toward S255N and S255IR. Furthermore, a comparison of the NIR SINFONI and mm data from S255IR clearly reveal two different (proto) stellar populations with an estimated age difference of approximately 1 Myr. A multi-wavelength spectroscopy and mapping study reveals different evolutionary phases of the star formation regions. We present observations of the embedded massive young stellar object (YSO) candidate 08576nr292, obtained with X-shooter and SINFONI on the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The flux-calibrated, medium-resolution X-shooter spectrum (300 - 2500 nm) includes over 300 emission lines, but no (photospheric) absorption lines and is consistent with a reddened disk spectrum. Among the emission lines are three hydrogen series and helium lines, both permitted and forbidden metal lines, and CO first-overtone emission. A representative sample of lines with different morphologies is presented. The H alpha and Ca II triplet lines are very strong, with profiles indicative of outflow and - possibly - infall, usually observed in accreting stars. These lines include a blue-shifted absorption component at ~ -125 km/s. The He I and metal-line profiles are double-peaked, with a likely origin in a circumstellar disk. The forbidden lines, associated with outflow, have a single blue-shifted emission component centered at -125 km/s, coinciding with the absorption components in H alpha and Ca II. SINFONI H- and K-band integral-field spectroscopy of the cluster environment demonstrates that the [Fe II] emission is produced by a jet originating at the location of 08576nr292. Because the spectral type of the central object cannot be determined, its mass remains uncertain. We argue that 08576nr292 is an intermediate-mass YSO with a high accretion rate Mdot_acc ~ 10^-5 - 10^-6 Msun/yr. We present VLT/SINFONI integral field spectroscopy of RCW 34 along with Spitzer/IRAC photometry of the surroundings. RCW 34 consists of three different regions. A large bubble has been detected on the IRAC images in which a cluster of intermediate- and low-mass class II objects is found. At the northern edge of this bubble, an HII region is located, ionized by 3 OB stars. Intermediate mass stars (2 - 3 Msun) are detected of G- and K- spectral type. These stars are still in the pre-main sequence (PMS) phase. North of the HII region, a photon-dominated region is present, marking the edge of a dense molecular cloud traced by H2 emission. Several class 0/I objects are associated with this cloud, indicating that star formation is still taking place. The distance to RCW 34 is revised to 2.5 +- 0.2 kpc and an age estimate of 2 - 1 Myrs is derived from the properties of the PMS stars inside the HII region. The most likely scenario for the formation of the three regions is that star formation propagates from South to North. First the bubble is formed, produced by intermediate- and low-mass stars only, after that, the HII region is formed from a dense core at the edge of the molecular cloud, resulting in the expansion as a champagne flow. More recently, star formation occurred in the rest of the molecular cloud. Two different formation scenarios are possible: (a) The bubble with the cluster of low- and intermediate mass stars triggered the formation of the O star at the edge of the molecular cloud which in turn induces the current star-formation in the molecular cloud. The characterisation of the stellar population toward young high-mass star-forming regions allows to constrain fundamental cluster properties like distance and age. These are essential when using high-mass clusters as probes to conduct Galactic studies. NGC 7538 is a star-forming region with an embedded stellar population only unearthed in the near-infrared. We present the first near-infrared spectro-photometric study of the candidate high-mass stellar content in NGC 7538. We obtained H and K spectra of 21 sources with both the multi-object and long-slit modes of LIRIS at the WHT, and complement these data with sub-arcsecond JHKs photometry of the region using the imaging mode of the same instrument. We find a wide variety of objects within the studied stellar population of NGC 7538. Our results discriminate between a stellar population associated to the HII region, but not contained within its extent, and several pockets of more recent star formation. We report the detection of CO bandhead emission toward several sources as well as other features indicative of a young stellar nature. We infer a spectro-photometric distance of 2.7+-0.5 kpc, an age spread in the range 0.5-2.2 Myr and a total mass ~1.7x10^3 Msun for the older population., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 1 table, accepted by A&A

There is considerable controversy surrounding the nature of M1-78, a compact nebula located beyond the Perseus arm. It was first classified as a planetary nebula and is nowadays generally considered to be a compact HII region. To investigate the nature M1-78 further, we present a detailed spectroscopic study of M1-78 in the optical and near-infrared. M1-78 is a high-density nebula with substantial physical differences between its two main morphological zones: a bright arc to the SW and a blob of emission in the NE. Specifically, the blob in the NE has a higher electron temperature and visual extinction than the SW arc. The most important result, however, is the confirmation of a nitrogen enrichment in M1-78. This enrichment is stronger at the location of the NE blob and is correlated with a defficiency in the O abundance and a (dubious) He enrichment. Such an abundance pattern is typical of ejecta nebulae around evolved massive stars such as Wolf-Rayet and Luminous Blue Variable stars. The spatial variations in the physical conditions and chemical abundances and the presence of more than one possible ionizing source indicates, however, that M1-78 is better described as a combination of a compact HII region + ejecta. Finally, we detect H2 emission that extends over a large (~30 arcsec) area around the ionized nebula. Analysis of the near-infrared H2 lines indicates that the excitation mechanism is UV fluorescence., 14 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

Outflows are frequently studied in the near-infrared (NIR) since the H2 emission in this wavelength range often traces the shocked molecular gas. However, the mechanisms behind the H2 emission detected in IRAS 19410+2336 have not been clarified yet. We present here spatially resolved NIR spectroscopy which allows us to verify whether the H2 emission originates from thermal emission in shock fronts or from fluorescence excitation by non-ionizing UV photons. Moreover, NIR spectroscopy also offers the possibility of studying the characteristics of the putative driving source(s) of the H2 emission by the detection of photospheric and circumstellar spectral features, and of the environmental conditions (e.g. extinction)., Methods: We obtained long-slit, intermediate-resolution, NIR spectra of IRAS 19410+2336 using LIRIS, the NIR imager/ spectrographer mounted on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope. As a complement, we also obtained J, H and Ks images with the Las Campanas 2.5m Du Pont Telescope, and archival mid-infrared (MIR) Spitzer images at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 μm., Results: We confirm the shocked nature of the H2 emission, with an excitation temperature of about 2000 K, based on the analysis of relevant H2 line ratios, ortho-to-para ratios and excitation diagrams. We have also identified objects with very different properties and evolutionary stages in IRAS 19410+2336. The most massive source at millimeter wavelengths, mm1, with a mass of a few tens of solar masses, has a bright NIR (and MIR) counterpart. This suggests that emission –probably coming through a cavity created by one of the outflows present in the region, or from the outflow cavity itself– is leaking at these wavelengths. The second most massive millimeter source, mm2, is only detected at & 6 μm, suggesting that it could be a high-mass protostar still in its main accretion phase. Near-infrared surveys of high-mass star-forming regions start to shed light onto their stellar content. A particular class of objects found in these regions, the so-called massive Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) are surrounded by dense circumstellar material. Several near- and mid-infrared diagnostic tools are used to infer the physical characteristics and geometry of this circumstellar matter. Near-infrared hydrogen emission lines provide evidence for a disk-wind. The profiles of the first overtone of the CO band-heads, originating in the inner 10 AU from the central star, are well fitted assuming a keplerian rotating disk. The mid-infrared spectral energy distribution requires the presence of a more extended envelope containing dust at a temperature of about 200 K. CRIRES observations of CO fundamental absorption lines confirm the presence of a cold envelope. High-quality K-band spectra of strongly reddened point sources, deeply embedded in (ultra-)compact H ii regions, have revealed a population of 20 young massive stars showing no photospheric absorption lines, but strong Brγ emission. About half the objects exhibit features commonly associated with massive young stellar objects (YSOs) surrounded by a circumstellar disk: a very red colour (J–K)≥ 2, CO bandhead emission, hydrogen emission lines (sometimes doubly peaked), and Fe ii and/or Mg ii emission lines. The CO emission must come from a relatively dense (∼ 10 cm−3) and hot (T∼2000–5000 K) region, sufficiently shielded from the intense UV radiation field of the young massive star. The best geometrical solution is a dense and neutral circumstellar disk causing the CO bandhead emission. This conclusion is supported by detailed model fits.

A considerable fraction of the massive stars in our galaxy is obscured by dust. Dust extinction prevents us from using powerful criteria, developed at ultravio- let and optical wavelength ranges, to infer physical properties of hot stars. At wavelengths longwards of about 5 microns, emission from warm dust typically dominates the spectra. It is, therefore, crucial to develop diagnostic tools in the near-infrared window to understand the nature and evolution of hot stars surrounded by dust. Such embedding in dust occurs, for instance, during the early stages of their lives in giant molecular clouds. To characterise the physical parameters of these hidden massive stars, and to find clues about their forma- tion process, we developed spectroscopic diagnostics based on the near-infrared

We have obtained high resolution (R = 10,000) K-band spectra of candidate young massive stars deeply embedded in (ultra-) compact HII regions (UCHIIs). In these clusters, three types of objects are identified. The first type (38 objects) consists of ``naked'' OB stars whose K-band spectra are dominated by photospheric emission. We classify the K-band spectra of the OB-type cluster members using near-infrared classification criteria. The spectral classification provides an important constraint on the distance to the embedded cluster. The ionising power of the population thus derived is compared to the information obtained from the infrared and radio flux of these sources. In most cases these two different determinations of the ionising flux are consistent, from which we conclude that we have identified the ionising star(s) in about 50% of the embedded clusters. The second type (7 objects) are point sources associated with UCHII radio emission, that exhibit nebular emission lines in the near-infrared. Six of the objects in this group produce HeI emission indicative of an embedded O-type star. These objects are more embedded than the OB stars and probably do not dominate the infrared flux as measured by IRAS. The third type (20 objects) is characterised by broad (100--200 km/s) Brgamma emission and no photospheric absorption profiles. We report on the observation of CO bandhead emission around 51 Oph (dv=2). A high resolving power (R~10,000) spectrum was obtained with the infrared spectrometer ISAAC mounted on VLT-ANTU. Modeling of the profile suggests that the hot (Tgas=2000-4000K) and dense (n_H>1e10 cm-3) molecular material as probed by the CO bandhead is located in the inner AU of a Keplerian disk viewed almost edge-on. Combined with the observation of cooler gas (Tgas=500-900K) by ISO-SWS and the lack of cold material, our data suggest that the disk around 51 Oph is essentially warm and small. We demonstrate the presence of a dust-free inner disk that extents from the inner truncation radius until the dust sublimation radius. The disk around 51 Oph may be in a rare transition state toward a small debris disk object., Letter accepted for publication in A&A

We re-examine the nature of NGC2024-IRS2 in light of the recent discovery of the late O-type star, IRS2b, located 5 arcsec from IRS2. Using L-band spectroscopy, we set a lower limit of Av = 27.0 mag on the visual extinction towards IRS2. Arguments based on the nature of the circumstellar material, favor an Av of 31.5 mag. IRS2 is associated with the UCHII region G206.543-16.347 and the infrared source IRAS 05393-0156. We show that much of the mid-infrared emission towards IRS2, as well as the far infrared emission peaking at ~ 100 micron, do not originate in the direct surroundings of IRS2, but instead from an extended molecular cloud. Using new K-, L- and L'-band spectroscopy and a comprehensive set of infrared and radio continuum measurements from the literature, we apply diagnostics based on the radio slope, the strength of the infrared hydrogen recombination lines, and the presence of CO band-heads to constrain the nature and spatial distribution of the circumstellar material of IRS2. Using simple gaseous and/or dust models of prescribed geometry, we find strong indications that the infrared flux originating in the circumstellar material of IRS2 is dominated by emission from a dense gaseous disk with a radius of about 0.6 AU. At radio wavelengths the flux density distribution is best described by a stellar wind recombining at a radius of about 100 AU. Although NGC2024/IRS2 shares many similarities with BN-like objects, we do not find evidence for the presence of a dust shell surrounding this object.
