Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study on the feasibility of using artificial neural networks (ANNs) and genetic algorithms (GAs) to predict the performance characteristics of faulted switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive systems. In this work, the ANNs are applied for their well known interpolation capabilities for highly nonlinear systems. In addition, the GAs are employed for their ability to search a complex structural and parametric space as necessary to find good ANN solutions. Also, an integrated finite elements/state space modeling approach is used to generate training data sets for the SRM drive system. Furthermore, the results are compared to test data. Abstract

This paper examines the feasibility of using artificial neural networks (ANN's) and evolutionary algorithms (EA's) to develop discrete time dynamic models for fault-free and faulted switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive systems. SRM's are capable of functioning despite the presence of faults. Faults impart transient changes to machine inductances that are difficult to model analytically. After this transient period, SRM's are capable of functioning at a reduced level of performance. ANN's are applied for their well-known interpolation capabilities for highly nonlinear systems. A dynamical model for the SRM is constructed by feeding values for state variables back to ANN inputs. EA's are employed for their ability to search complex structural and parameter spaces to find good ANN solutions. Furthermore, the ANN structure and training regimen parameters are searched using EA's. Finally, an analysis of the search is performed, and the resulting model is presented. The results of using the ANN-EA-based model to predict the performance characteristics of prototype SRM drive motion under normal and abnormal operating conditions are presented and verified by comparison to test data. Abstract

Two approaches to model the coupled electromechanical behavior of AC contactors are investigated, a coupled three-dimensional magneto-structural finite element analysis (3D-FE) and a coupled state space-finite element analysis (SS-FE). The use of both approaches resulted in the prediction of contactor performance including the drive coil currents and armature force. The computed results were found to be in good agreement with measured data.

The estimation of human brain cellular activity from EEG/MEG signals requires a rather accurate knowledge of the living tissues electrical properties. The identification of these properties from joint EEG/MEG measurements as well as from impedance tomography has been thoroughly investigated in literature. In this paper, an assessment of the information content coming from each diagnostics, and their possible interactions, will be presented and discussed.
