1. Development and characterization of edible films based on native cassava starch, beeswax, and propolis

Abstract: Cassava starch has received research focus due to its low cost, and excellent film-forming ability. However, cassava starch films with relatively strong hydrophilicity greatly limits its application in industries. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop native cassava starch-based films incorporated with beeswax and ethanolic propolis extract (EPE), to improve the barrier and antimicrobial properties of cassava starch. The films were characterized in terms of physical properties including thickness, moisture content, solubility (water, acidic and alkaline), color, microstructure (FTIR), and water vapor permeability (WVP). The film-forming solutions composed of cassava starch (2-4%w/v), beeswax (0.5–0.9%w/w), and ethanolic propolis extract (1–4%v/v) were prepared according to a three-factor Box-Behnken response surface experimental design. Antifungal activity of films with 4.0 mL of EPE was assessed against Aspergillus niger. The results showed that higher concentrations of beeswax produced films with the lowest WVP and moisture content values. An increase in EPE content reduced the lightness, producing opaque and yellow-colored films. EPE showed antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger. In conclusion, it could be said that cassava starch-based films incorporated with beeswax and propolis have the potential to be used food packaging applications, and coatings for fresh and minimally processed products, mainly in non-acidic fruits and vegetables.

3. Heating Device Based on Modified Microwave Oven: Improved to Measure Liquid Temperature by Using FBG Sensors

Abstract: A prototype device based on a modified domestic microwave oven for liquid food products pasteurization is presented. This novel design has a coiling glass pipe adapted inside a microwave cavity to allow liquid continuous flow, in which several temperature optical sensors based on Fiber Bragg Grating were installed to measure, by means of contact, the circulating liquid temperature in the pipe, while the oven is on, to obtain the profile temperature as a function of time at different pipe points. The temperatures at liquid input and output were also measured with thermocouples. This device was tested to establish how well it may perform using different standardized liquids with well-known physicochemical and dielectric properties, such as water, water with dissolved sugars, water with dissolved salts, and water with dissolved sugars and salts. It could be observed that the maximum temperature reached was 90 °C for distilled water, 80 °C for water with dissolved salts, 60 °C for water with dissolved sugars and 80 °C for water with dissolved sugars and salts, showing that these data were in agreement with previous results in the literature. This type of device would be potentially useful to establish the device’s efficiency in terms of retention time, energy consumption, and volume of processed liquid, thus, broadening the use of this microwave heating technology with several types of liquid substances.

5. Relationship between dominance hierarchy steepness and rank-relatedness of benefits in primates.

Abstract: In animal social groups, the extent to which individuals consistently win agonistic interactions and their ability to monopolize resources represent 2 core aspects of their competitive regime. However, whether these two aspects are closely correlated within groups has rarely been studied. Here, we tested the hypothesis that hierarchy steepness, which is generally used to represent power differentials between group members, predicts the variation in the distribution of fitness-related benefits (i.e. fecundity, infant survival, mating success, and feeding success) in relation to individual dominance ranks. We tested this hypothesis in primate groups using comparative phylogenetic meta-analytical techniques. Specifically, we reviewed published and unpublished studies to extract data on individual dominance ranks, their access to fitness-related benefits, and hierarchy steepness. We collected and included in our analysis a total of 153 data points, representing 27 species (including 2 chimpanzee sub-species). From these, we used 4 common methods to measure individual dominance ranks and hierarchy steepness, i.e. D ij -based normalized Davids scores, randomized Elo-ratings, and Davids scores and Elo-ratings estimated in Bayesian frameworks. We found that hierarchy steepness had no effect on the strength of the relationship between dominance rank and access to fitness-related benefits. Our results suggest that hierarchy steepness does not reflect between-group variation in the extent to which individual dominance affects the acquisition of fitness-related benefits in primates. Although the ability to win agonistic encounters is essential, we speculate that other behavioral strategies adopted by individuals may play crucial roles in resource acquisition in animal competitive regimes.

Abstract: Comparative studies reliant on single personality surveys to rate wild primates are scarce yet remain critical for developing a holistic comparative understanding of personality. Differences in survey design, item exclusion, and factor selection impede cross-study comparisons. To address these challenges, we used consistently collected data to assess personality trait structures in wild rhesus (Macaca mulatta), bonnet (M. radiata), and long-tailed (M. fascicularis) macaques that varied in their degree of phylogenetic closeness, species-typical social styles, and anthropogenic exposure in urban or urban-rural environments. We administered 51-item personality surveys to familiar raters, and, after reliability and structure screenings, isolated 4-5 factor solutions among the species. Four consistent factors emerged: Confident, Sociable, Active, and Irritable/Equable. This latter factor had differential expression across species. Item composition of the Irritable/Equable factor was consistent with their anticipated differences in social styles, but confounded by cross-site anthropogenic variation. We also administered a 43-item survey confined to human-primate situations which paralleled our findings of social style variation, while also exhibiting variation that aligned with population differences in human density. Our findings indicate that macaque personality trait structures may be emergent outcomes of evolutionary and/or socioecological processes, but further research is needed to parse these processes relative contributions.

9. Gait performance changes after ten cervical retractions

Abstract: Background and Study Aim. Students are prone to spine overloading, as they often spend prolonged periods in unfavorable postures. They tend to struggle with balancing study time and leisure physical activity. The head and neck regions are particularly rich in proprioceptors. Prolonged forward head posture (protraction) can lead to balance disturbances. This, in turn, affects gait and overall body posture. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a series of corrective active head exercises on gait, a fundamental form of movement, in a group of healthy university students. Material and Methods. Gait patterns were assessed in 10 healthy male full-time students with an average age of 22.8 years (SD = 1.1). The assessment was based on the regional distribution of plantar pressure across two measurement sessions. One session was conducted before, and one after performing 10 active head retractions. Gait changes were analyzed in ten foot regions for 200 steps of each participant. Results. After 10 cervical retractions, a decrease in pressure, ground reaction force, contact time, and area values was observed in the 1st metatarsal head (1MTH). Conversely, an increase in these quantities was found in the toes. Additionally, there was a tendency toward a decrease in the contact area of the heel and 3rd metatarsal head (3MTH), along with increased contact time in the midfoot. Performing 10 neck retractions altered gait by inducing heel supination. It also increased hallux involvement in propulsion and widened the base of toe support. Conclusions. Even a few movements that correct head protraction have an immediate effect on whole-body movement. This effect suggests potential benefits of incorporating neck retractions into physical education programs for students. Even when time-consuming forms of regular exercise are not feasible, performing just a few neck-correcting movements can positively impact overall body movement.

Abstract: Abstract Background Ageing leads to altered immune responses, resulting in higher susceptibility to certain infections in the elderly. Immune ageing is a heterogeneous process also associated with inflammaging, a low-grade chronic inflammation. Altered cytotoxic T cell responses and cytokine storm have previously been described in severe COVID-19 cases, however the parameters responsible for such immune response failures are not well known. The aim of our study was to characterize CD8+ T cells and cytokines associated with ageing, in a cohort of patients aged over 70 years stratified by COVID-19 severity. Results One hundred and four patients were included in the study. We found that, in older people, COVID-19 severity was associated with (i) higher level of GM-CSF, CXCL10 (IP-10), VEGF, IL-1β, CCL2 (MCP-1) and the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), (ii) increased terminally differentiated CD8+T cells, and (ii) decreased early precursors CD8+ T stem cell-like memory cells (TSCM) and CD27+CD28+. The cytokines mentioned above were found at higher concentrations in the COVID-19+ older cohort compared to a younger cohort in which they were not associated with disease severity. Conclusions Our results highlight the particular importance of the myeloid lineage in COVID-19 severity among older people. As GM-CSF and CXCL10 were not associated with COVID-19 severity in younger patients, they may represent disease severity specific markers of ageing and should be considered in older people care.

18. Demographic, socioeconomic and health determinants of depressive symptoms in adults 50 years and older from Mexico: a secondary data longitudinal analysis from the Mexican Health and Aging Study

Abstract: Background Depression in ageing adults is a public health problem. Worldwide studies have identified social and health risk factors for depressive symptoms. However, little is known about their longitudinal determinants in Mexico.Objectives and setting To find the prevalence of depressive symptoms and their longitudinal individual and contextual risk factors in Mexican adults aged 50 and older.Design Secondary data of 6460 persons aged 50 years and older from the Mexican Health and Aging Study were analysed using a ‘between-within’ panel data analysis approach.Results The prevalence of depressive symptoms increased from 35% in 2003 to 38% in 2015. The significantly longitudinal factors associated with these symptoms were getting older (OR 1.02, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.03), being a woman (OR 2.39, 95% CI 2.16 to 2.64), less time spent in formal education (0 years and less than 6 years OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.32 to 1.75 and OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.19 to 1.50, respectively), lower net worth (OR 1.13, 95% CI 1.08 to 1.17), being recently unemployed (OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.25), increased (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.25) or increasing number (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.15 to 1.31) of chronic conditions, poor (OR 4.68, 95% CI 4.26 to 5.15) or worsened (OR 1.71, 95% CI 1.61 to 1.81) self-rated health and having impairments on instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) (OR 2.94 95% CI 2.35 to 3.67) or a new IADL impairment (OR 1.67, 95% CI 1.48 to 1.89), as well as having impairments on ADLs (OR 1.51, 95% CI 1.23 to 1.86) or a new ADL impairment (OR 1.34, 95% CI 1.21 to 1.48).Conclusions The prevalence of depressive symptoms in Mexican adults aged 50 and older is high. Our findings show that they are longitudinally associated with the individual’s demographic, socioeconomic, health and disability characteristics. Efforts in public policy should focus on preventing chronic conditions and disability, as well as fighting inequalities to reduce the prevalence of depressive symptoms.

Abstract: Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.

We assessed the individuality of contribution of foot parts that directly mediate the transmission of forces between the foot and the ground in body weight shifting during walking based on 200 pedobarometric measurements corresponding to the analysed foot parts for each of 19 individuals in a homogeneous study group. Our results show a degree of individualisation of the contribution of particular foot parts in the weight-shift high enough to justify the need to consider it in the diagnostic analysis. Furthermore they reveal noticeable, functionally driven differences between plantar areas most apparent between the lowest individuality for the first foot ray and the highest for second one and metatarsus. The diagnostic reference standard in pedobarometry should describe the contribution in the shift of body weight during walking for each area of the foot separately and include information on the intra-individual variation and individualisation of descriptors of the contribution. Such a comprehensive standard has the potential to increase the diagnostic value of pedobarometry through enrichment of the assessment description.

Abstract: Pandemics caused by pathogens that originate in wildlife highlight the importance of understanding the behavioral ecology of disease outbreaks at human-wildlife interfaces. Specifically, the relative effects of human-wildlife and wildlife-wildlife interactions on disease outbreaks among wildlife populations in urban and peri-urban environments remain unclear. We used social network analysis and epidemiological Susceptible-Infected-Recovered models to simulate zooanthroponotic outbreaks, through wild animals' joint propensities to co-interact with humans, and their social grooming of conspecifics. On 10 groups of macaques (Macaca spp.) in peri-urban environments in Asia, we collected behavioral data using event sampling of human-macaque interactions within the same time and space, and focal sampling of macaques' social interactions with conspecifics and overall anthropogenic exposure. Model-predicted outbreak sizes were related to structural features of macaques' networks. For all three species, and for both anthropogenic (co-interactions) and social (grooming) contexts, outbreak sizes were positively correlated to the network centrality of first-infected macaques. Across host species and contexts, the above effects were stronger through macaques' human co-interaction networks than through their grooming networks, particularly for rhesus and bonnet macaques. Long-tailed macaques appeared to show intraspecific variation in these effects. Our findings suggest that among wildlife in anthropogenically-impacted environments, the structure of their aggregations around anthropogenic factors makes them more vulnerable to zooanthroponotic outbreaks than their social structure. The global features of these networks that influence disease outbreaks, and their underlying socio-ecological covariates, need further investigation. Animals that consistently interact with both humans and their conspecifics are important targets for disease control.

Abstract: BackgroundSickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited autosomal recessive disorder exhibiting a range of symptoms and acute and/or chronic complications that affect the quality of life. This study aimed to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and to identify the associated factors in adult patients with SCD in France.MethodsDREPAtient is a cross-sectional, multicenter study conducted from June 2020 to April 2021 in France and in certain French overseas territories where SCD is highly prevalent. Sociodemographic and clinical data were collected online. HRQoL was assessed by the French version of the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) questionnaire. HRQoL determinants were identified using multivariable linear regression analysis.ResultsIn total, 570 participants were included, mostly women (68.9%), with a mean age of 33.3 (±10.7) years. The highest mean score HRQoL was found in the Physical functioning domain (67.5 ± 21.8) and the lowest mean score in the General Health perception domain (37.7 ± 20.3). The mean score of the physical composite (PCS) and mental composite (MCS) of SF-36 summary scores was 40.6 ± 8.9 and 45.3 ± 9.8, respectively. Participants receiving oxygen therapy (β = −3.20 [95%CI: −5.56; −0.85]), those with a history of femoral osteonecrosis (−3.09 [−4.64; −1.53]), those hospitalized for vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC) or acute chest syndrome (ACS) (−2.58 [−3.93; −1.22]), those with chronic complications (−2.33 [−4.04; −0.62]), female participants (−2.17 [−3.65; −0.69]), those with psychological follow-up (−2.13 [−3.59; −0.67]), older participants (−1.69 [−3.28; −0.09]), and those receiving painkillers (−1.61 [−3.16; −0.06]) reported worse PCS score. By contrast, those who had completed secondary or high school (4.36 [2.41; 6.31]) and those with stable financial situation (2.85 [0.94, 4.76]) reported better PCS scores. Worse MCS scores were reported among participants with psychological follow-up (−2.54 [−4.28; −0.80]) and those hospitalized for VOC/ACS in the last 12 months (−2.38 [−3.99; −0.77]), while those who had relatives’ support (5.27 [1.92; 8.62]) and those with stable financial situation (4.95 [2.65; 7.26]) reported better MCS scores.ConclusionAdults with major SCD reported poor physical and mental HRQoL scores. Hospitalization for VOC/ACS, chronic complications, use of painkillers, perceived financial situation, and support from relatives are important predictors of HRQoL in SCD patients. Interventions to improve HRQoL outcomes SCD should be considered.

Abstract: Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

27. Impact of hospitalized vaso-occlusive crises in the previous calendar year on mortality and complications in adults with sickle cell disease: a French population-based studyResearch in context

Abstract: Summary: Background: Historically, sickle cell disease (SCD) patients experiencing frequent hospitalized vaso-occlusive crises (HVOC) have been associated with increased mortality, yet recent data reflecting the widespread use of hydroxyurea and advancements in disease management remain limited. Our study aims to assess the association between HVOC and mortality or severe complications in patients with SCD in this new treatment landscape. Methods: This was a retrospective observational cohort study using the French national health data system. Between 01-01-2012 and 12-31-2018, all SCD patients ≥16 years old (ICD-10 codes D57.0–2) were included and followed until 12-31-2018. HVOC was defined as a hospitalization of ≥1 night with primary diagnosis of SCD with crisis, following an emergency room visit. The association between HVOC and severe complications was assessed with a Cox proportional hazards model. Findings: In total, 8018 patients (56.6% females; 4538/8018) were included. The 2018 SCD standardized one-year period prevalence was 17.9 cases/100,000 person-years [17.4; 18.3]. The mean rate was 0.84 (1.88) HVOC/person-year. In 2018, 70% (5323/7605), 22% (1671/7605), and 8% (611/7605) of patients experienced 0, 1–2, or 3+ HVOCs, respectively. The median survival time between HVOCs was 415 days [386; 439]. Overall, 312 patients died (3.9%) with a mean age of 49.8 (19.4). Compared to patients without HVOC, the hazard ratios of death in patients with 1–2 or 3+ HVOCs the year prior to death were 1.67 [1.21; 2.30] and 3.70 [2.30; 5.93], respectively. Incidence of acute chest syndrome, pulmonary embolism, osteonecrosis, and sepsis increased with the HVOCs category, but not stroke. In 2018, 29.5% (180/611) of patients with 3+ HVOCs did not take hydroxyurea. Interpretation: Patients must be closely monitored during their hospitalizations to intensify treatment and check treatment compliance. Innovative therapies are also required. Abstract: Introducción: Los dientes permanentes son piezas fundamentales que determinan el patrón de masticación durante toda la vida; tal es el caso de los primeros molares permanentes (PMP), su posicionamiento y desarrollo resulta la clave para una correcta oclusión. La destrucción parcial, total, o pérdida de los PMP repercute negativamente en el desarrollo y crecimiento maxilofacial. Objetivo: Caracterizar el estado del PMP en adolescentes del Área de Salud José Manuel Ricardo del municipio Banes. Método: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal. El universo lo integraron 105 adolescentes. Se emplearon variables como: edad, sexo, estado del PMP. Se utilizó el índice de Clune para medir el estado del PMP. Resultados: Predominaron los PMP sanos (68,09%), seguido de los obturados (12,85%), con otras afectaciones (9,76%) y los cariados (8,51%). Los adolescentes de 12 años presentaron la mayor cantidad de molares cariados (3,80%). Prevaleció el estado leve de afectación de los primeros molares según índice de Clune (72,38%). Conclusiones: En la población estudiada prevaleció la edad de 12 años y el sexo femenino. Existió superioridad de los PMP sanos en las unidades de análisis. Predominaron los primeros molares inferiores izquierdos cariados y sus homólogos derechos restaurados. Imperó el estado leve de afectación de PMP según índice de Clune. Abstract: Introducción: los riesgos biomecánicos son aplicaciones de movimiento repetitivos, fuerzas y posturas que adopta un individuo al realizar una actividad específica, existiendo la probabilidad de sufrir un incidente, accidente o enfermedad laboral. Objetivo: identificar los riesgos biomecánicos y trastornos musculoesqueléticos en instrumentadores quirúrgico que laboran en centrales de esterilización en 5 instituciones de salud de Barranquilla. Método: se implementó un estudio descriptivo en el se invitó a participar a 29 instrumentadores que respondieron el cuestionario nórdico de Kourinka, con base en principios éticos correspondientes. Resultados: 35% de los encuestados manifestó molestias en la muñeca, el 32% molestias en la región dorso lumbar, el 21% experimentó molestias en el cuello, y el 14% algún tipo de molestia o dolor en el codo o antebrazo. La matriz de peligro y valoración de riesgo en dos de las cinco instituciones mostró que el riesgo es muy alto en los procesos de recepción, preparación, empaque, esterilización, almacenaje y entrega Conclusiones: los riesgos identificados fueron: la manipulación de carga afectando a la zona lumbar, posturas forzadas en actividades de empaque y esterilización generando molestias en la muñeca. Se evidenció enfermedades como: epicondilitis, dolor en los pies, telangiectasia y síndrome del túnel de carpio.

Abstract: The article analyzes the transfer of technology in Europe presented in the scientific articles. The research in the article was based on the development of a bibliometric analysis, a quantitative research method, presented as an inventory of the articles published in the Web of Science platform specific to the field of technology transfer. The result of the query was the display of a number of 556 existing scientific documents in the database, which contain the English phrase "technology transfer" in the summary or in the keywords of the documents. The query was carried out at date of July 14, 2023 and assumed the inclusion of publications from the last 6 years, 2017 – 2023, including articles published in European countries. The results of the research confirm the third mission of the universities, taking the knowledge transfer actions, considering that the academic space is the place of concentration of the intellectual potential at the level of a state.

Abstract: Summary: Background: Although immunomodulators have established benefit against the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in general, it is uncertain whether such agents improve outcomes without increasing the risk of secondary infections in the specific subgroup of previously immunocompromised patients. We assessed the effect of immunomodulators on outcomes of immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19. Methods: The protocol was prospectively registered with PROSPERO (CRD42022335397). MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and references of relevant articles were searched up to 01-06-2022. Authors of potentially eligible randomized controlled trials were contacted to provide data on immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control (i.e., placebo or standard-of-care). Findings: Eleven randomized controlled trials involving 397 immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19 were included. Ten trials had low risk of bias. There was no difference between immunocompromised patients randomized to immunomodulators vs control regarding mortality [30/182 (16.5%) vs 41/215 (19.1%); RR 0.93, 95% CI 0.61–1.41; p = 0.74], secondary infections (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.64–1.58; p = 0.99) and change in World Health Organization ordinal scale from baseline to day 15 (weighed mean difference 0.27, 95% CI -0.09–0.63; p = 0.15). In subgroup analyses including only patients with hematologic malignancy, only trials with low risk of bias, only trials administering IL-6 inhibitors, or only trials administering immunosuppressants, there was no difference between comparators regarding mortality. Interpretation: Immunomodulators, compared to control, were not associated with harmful or beneficial outcomes, including mortality, secondary infections, and change in ordinal scale, when administered to immunocompromised patients hospitalized for COVID-19. 33. Personality trait structures across three species of Macaca, using survey ratings of responses to conspecifics and humans.

Abstract: Comparative studies reliant on single personality surveys to rate wild primates are scarce yet remain critical for developing a holistic comparative understanding of personality. Differences in survey design, item exclusion, and factor selection impede cross-study comparisons. To address these challenges, we used consistently collected data to assess personality trait structures in wild rhesus (Macaca mulatta), bonnet (M. radiata), and long-tailed (M. fascicularis) macaques that varied in their degree of phylogenetic closeness, species-typical social styles, and anthropogenic exposure in urban or urban-rural environments. We administered 51-item personality surveys to familiar raters, and, after reliability and structure screenings, isolated 4-5 factor solutions among the species. Four consistent factors emerged: Confident, Sociable, Active, and Irritable/Equable. This latter factor had differential expression across species. Item composition of the Irritable/Equable factor was consistent with their anticipated differences in social styles, but confounded by cross-site anthropogenic variation. We also administered a 43-item survey confined to human-primate situations which paralleled our findings of social style variation, while also exhibiting variation that aligned with population differences in human density. Our findings indicate that macaque personality trait structures may be emergent outcomes of evolutionary and/or socioecological processes, but further research is needed to parse these processes' relative contributions.

Abstract: ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to determine which initial surgical treatment results in the lowest rate of death or neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) in premature infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) or isolated intestinal perforation (IP).Summary background dataThe impact of initial laparotomy versus peritoneal drainage for NEC or IP on the rate of death or NDI in extremely low birth weight infants is unknown.MethodsWe conducted the largest feasible randomized trial in 20 US centers, comparing initial laparotomy versus peritoneal drainage. The primary outcome was a composite of death or NDI at 18 to 22 months corrected age, analyzed using prespecified frequentist and Bayesian approaches.ResultsOf 992 eligible infants, 310 were randomized and 96% had primary outcome assessed. Death or NDI occurred in 69% of infants in the laparotomy group versus 70% with drainage [adjusted relative risk (aRR) 1.0; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.87-1.14]. A preplanned analysis identified an interaction between preoperative diagnosis and treatment group (P = 0.03). With a preoperative diagnosis of NEC, death or NDI occurred in 69% after laparotomy versus 85% with drainage (aRR 0.81; 95% CI: 0.64-1.04). Abstract: Background: cerebrovascular disease represents the most common health problem related to neurological care, it is important to study it in different contexts and from different approaches.Objective: to describe epidemiological and clinical variables’ behavior in patients admitted for stroke.Methods: descriptive and cross-sectional study, carried out in Arnaldo Milián Castro Hospital’s Neurology service from Villa Clara, Cuba, which included all patients with a clinical diagnosis of cardioembolic or atherothrombotic stroke, admitted to the ward during 2019. The information was obtained from the medical records stored in the Hospital Archive; and it was processed in the statistical package SPSS. v. 21. A descriptive statistical analysis was applied, in a frequency distribution.Results: female patients predominated (51.6%). There was a higher incidence in men older than 79 years (47.7%), and in women older than 70 (86.0%). In 67.3% the cardioembolic cause was demonstrated. Arterial hypertension was the main associated risk factor (83.6%). The motor defect was observed as the most frequent clinical finding on admission (96.7%). Hemorrhagic transformation of the infarct and nosocomial bronchopneumonia were identified as the main neurological and non-neurological complications, respectively. Patients discharged alive prevailed (68.6%).Conclusions: ischemic strokes are more frequent in elderly patients; early identification and timely management of the established disease can largely prevent the appearance of complications, and consequently death.

Abstract: BackgroundThis cross sectional study describes a "Soft Landing" strategy utilizing hooks for minimizing proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) and proximal junctional failure (PJF). The technique creates a gradual transition from a rigid segmental construct to unilateral hooks at the upper instrumented level and preservation of the soft tissue attachments on the contralateral side of the hooks. Authors devise a novel classification system for better grading of PJK severity.MethodsThirty-nine consecutive adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients at a single institution received the "Soft Landing" technique. The proximal junctional angle was measured preoperatively and at last follow-up using standing 36-inch spinal radiographs. Changes in proximal junctional angle and rates of PJK and PJF were measured and used to create a novel classification system for evaluating and categorizing ASD patients postoperatively.ResultsThe mean age of the cohort was 61.4 years, and 90% of patients were women. Average follow up was 2.2 years. The mean change in proximal junctional angle was 8° (SD 7.4°) with the majority of patients (53%) experiencing less than 10° and only 1 patients with proximal junctional angle over 20°. Four patients (10%) needed additional surgery for proximal extension of the uppermost instrumented vertebra (UIV) secondary to PJF.ConclusionsSoft Landing technique is a possibly effective treatment strategy to prevent PJK and PJF following ASD that requires further evaluation. The described classification system provides management framework for better grading of PJK. The "Soft Landing" technique warrants further comparison to other techniques currently used to prevent both PJK and failure.

39. 504 Dihydroxyacetone, a combustion of electronic cigarettes, promotes cardiac-specific injury through metabolic and mitochondrial imbalances

Abstract: OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Electronic cigarettes have become increasingly popular, with various combustion products generated in the process. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a carbohydrate made during the heating process. Exposures may reach high micromolar to low millimolar doses of DHA per day and no studies have been done to understand the effects of DHA in the heart. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Here, we examine if DHA contributes to these using rat cardiomyocytes, H9c2 cells, and rat cardiac tissues to DHA evaluating metabolic and mitochondrial effects. Using the cells, we will investigate metabolic and mitochondrial pathways using Seahorse, protein expression changes in nutrient sensing pathways, and understand dose-dependent effects of DHA in the heart. Metabolite pools will also be evaluated to understand the changes promoted by DHA. Oxidative stress as previously observed in other cell models will also be measured. Key findings in the cardiac cells will be investigated in the cardiac tissues exposed to DHA. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: We have previously shown DHA induces oxidative stress, metabolic changes, and mitochondrial dysfunction in various cell line models. Interestingly, these effects are highly cell-type dependent. E-cigarettes are known to have toxic cardiac effects, including arterial stiffness, endothelial dysfunction, vascular injury, and oxidative stress. Changes in glycolytic, fatty acid synthesis, and the citric acid cycle enzymes and metabolites were found in the H9c2 cells. We also observed increased mitochondrial ROS and fuel changes due to DHA exposure. In DHA exposed cardiac tissues, we observed oxidative stress and mitochondrial fission and fusion dynamics altered. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE: These data suggest further study at physiologically relevant doses is warranted to understand how DHA inhaled impacts the long-term health of vapers. As well as the regulation of DHA in e-cigarettes as it has been deemed as safe for topical applications and warned against inhalation.

40. Extraction, characterization, and vascular response of proteins from catfish (Clarias batrachus L.) mucus

Abstract: The mucus of fish is its first line of defense to the surrounding environment and has been found to possess a range of bioactivities. This study was conducted to extract, characterize, and evaluate the vascular response of mucus from catfish (Clarias batrachus L.) against an irritant. The fish mucus was extracted through acidic and aqueous extraction methods yielding 0.585±0.00675 mg/mL protein in the acidic extract while the aqueous extract contained 1.18±0.0106 mg/mL. The extracts also analyzed through FT-IR spectroscopy showed characteristic bands of Amide A at 3225 to 3280 cm−1, Amide I at around 1600 and 1700 cm−1, and Amide II from 1510 to 1580 cm−1. The crude protein extracts also showed vascular response using CAM assay, with the aqueous extracts having higher activity, 82.05%±8.882 irritating inhibition than the acidic extract, 48.72%±8.882 irritating inhibition. This study suggests that the mucus of catfish could potentially be a novel anti-irritant agent and could be administered in drug application.

Abstract: Despite increasing conflict at human-wildlife interfaces, there exists little research on how the attributes and behavior of individual wild animals may influence human-wildlife interactions. Adopting a comparative approach, we examined the impact of animals' life-history and social attributes on interactions between humans and (peri)urban macaques in Asia. For 10 groups of rhesus, long-tailed, and bonnet macaques, we collected social behavior, spatial data, and human-interaction data for 11-20 months on pre-identified individuals. Mixed-model analysis revealed that, across all species, males and spatially peripheral individuals interacted with humans the most, and that high-ranking individuals initiated more interactions with humans than low-rankers. Among bonnet macaques, but not rhesus or long-tailed macaques, individuals who were more well-connected in their grooming network interacted more frequently with humans than less well-connected individuals. From an evolutionary perspective, our results suggest that individuals incurring lower costs related to their life-history (males) and resource-access (high rank; strong social connections within a socially tolerant macaque species), but also higher costs on account of compromising the advantages of being in the core of their group (spatial periphery), are the most likely to take risks by interacting with humans in anthropogenic environments. From a conservation perspective, evaluating individual behavior will better inform efforts to minimize conflict-related costs and zoonotic-risk.

Abstract: El análisis de los enfoques epistemológicos recurrentes identificados en proposiciones sobre los modelos científicos ha sido el propósito central del presente artículo. En esta dirección, se ha hecho énfasis en el contenido semántico de las unidades de análisis (proposiciones con alta carga teórica), a partir de la lectura de publicaciones de orden nacional e internacional en revistas especializadas de la didáctica de las ciencias y de la física, en una ventana temporal de 10 años. Todo ello enmarcado en una metodología de corte cualitativo. Desde este enfoque, se agruparon y clasificaron las proposiciones en categorías y subcategorías que se suscriben en posturas tradicionales y contemporáneas sobre modelos científicos. Según los resultados, sobre esta última postura se ubican la mayoría de ellas, adheridas a perspectivas semanticistas de las ciencias. Este aspecto tiene gran potencial para promover una enseñanza modelo teórica en la física a partir de los planteamientos de Ronald Giere.

Abstract: PurposeTo identify risk factors for sickle cell maculopathy due to hematological parameters (especially anemia and hemolysis) or cerebral vasculopathy.MethodsThis retrospective study was conducted at a Referral Center. The follow-up included optical coherent tomography/optical coherent tomography angiography, neuro-radiological imaging, and a hematological assessment (hemoglobin, hemoglobin S level, reticulocytes, mean corpuscular volume, bilirubin, and lactate dehydrogenase).ResultsHundred and thirty-two sickle cell patients were included. Maculopathy was observed in 127 eyes of SS patients and 10 eyes of SC patients (p < 0.001), unrelated to peripheral retinopathy. Cerebral vasculopathy was more frequent in SS patients (p < 0.001) and was also associated with the presence of maculopathy (p = 0.049), and it was related to peripheral retinopathy (p < 0.001). All biological parameters significantly differed according to the genotype (p < 0.001) but not according to the presence of cerebral vasculopathy or maculopathy. In the multivariate analysis, reticulocytes and bilirubin were associated with the presence of cerebral vasculopathy and maculopathy.ConclusionThe data obtained were consistent with the role of anemia or hemolysis markers in cerebral vasculopathy and macular involvement. As a trend of hemolysis appears to be a risk factor for these complications, this validates the use of preventive plasmapheresis in these patients.

Abstract: Humans and their associated anthropogenic factors may strongly affect the demographics, activity and fragmentation of wild animal populations. Yet, the degree and nature of such impact on indicators of animals’ social relationships remain largely under-investigated, despite the well-documented importance of strong social ties for an individual's health and fitness. Here, we examined whether interactions with humans may affect core aspects of social life in a primate species, by constraining the time available for individuals to engage in social interactions. Specifically, we predicted that individuals who spend more time monitoring or interacting with humans would reduce their time socializing with conspecifics (i.e. the time constraints hypothesis). Alternatively, human presence may result in increased levels of stress, leading to an increase in social behaviours that serve as a coping mechanism (i.e. the social stress hypothesis). We collected data between September 2016 and September 2017 on four groups of longtailed macaques, Macaca fascicularis, in Malaysia at two sites with differing levels of human impact. In support of the time constraints hypothesis, we found that at the site with moderate human impact, monkeys who monitored human activity more frequently engaged less often in grooming. In contrast, at the site with high human impact, we found evidence supporting the social stress hypothesis, as indicators of stress were positively associated with social interactions, although we could not link them to the presence of humans. Our results suggest that the nature of human impact on macaques’ social behaviour is dependent upon the intensity of human activity and interaction with the macaques. These findings therefore provide insights into how humans may influence individual fitness and group social structure in animals living in an anthropogenic environment. More broadly, our results may lead to a better understanding of animal behaviour in anthropogenic environments, implementing conservation and population management strategies and mitigating human–wildlife conflict.

Abstract: Time is a valuable but limited resource, and animals' survival depends on their ability to carefully manage the amount of time they allocate to each daily activity. While existing research has examined the ecological factors affecting animals' activity budgets, the impact of anthropogenic factors on urban-dwelling animals' time budgets remains understudied. Here we collected data through focal animal sampling from three groups of rhesus macaques in Northern India to examine whether interactions with humans decrease macaques' resting and social time (time constraints hypothesis), or whether, by contrast, foraging on anthropogenic food, that is potentially high in calories, leads macaques to spend more time resting and in social interactions (free time hypothesis). We found that macaques who interacted more frequently with people spent significantly less time resting and grooming, supporting the time constraints hypothesis. We argue that these time constraints are likely caused by the unpredictability of human behaviour.

49. Impact of joint interactions with humans and social interactions with conspecifics on the risk of zooanthroponotic outbreaks among wildlife populations

Abstract: Abstract Pandemics caused by pathogens that originate in wildlife highlight the importance of understanding the behavioral ecology of disease outbreaks at human–wildlife interfaces. Specifically, the relative effects of human–wildlife and wildlife-wildlife interactions on disease outbreaks among wildlife populations in urban and peri-urban environments remain unclear. We used social network analysis and epidemiological Susceptible-Infected-Recovered models to simulate zooanthroponotic outbreaks, through wild animals’ joint propensities to co-interact with humans, and their social grooming of conspecifics. On 10 groups of macaques (Macaca spp.) in peri-urban environments in Asia, we collected behavioral data using event sampling of human–macaque interactions within the same time and space, and focal sampling of macaques’ social interactions with conspecifics and overall anthropogenic exposure. Model-predicted outbreak sizes were related to structural features of macaques’ networks. For all three species, and for both anthropogenic (co-interactions) and social (grooming) contexts, outbreak sizes were positively correlated to the network centrality of first-infected macaques. Across host species and contexts, the above effects were stronger through macaques’ human co-interaction networks than through their grooming networks, particularly for rhesus and bonnet macaques. Long-tailed macaques appeared to show intraspecific variation in these effects. Our findings suggest that among wildlife in anthropogenically-impacted environments, the structure of their aggregations around anthropogenic factors makes them more vulnerable to zooanthroponotic outbreaks than their social structure. The global features of these networks that influence disease outbreaks, and their underlying socio-ecological covariates, need further investigation. Animals that consistently interact with both humans and their conspecifics are important targets for disease control.

Abstract: We present a case report of transbronchial cryobiopsy proven diffuse amyloid cystic lung disease complicating a homozygous Val122Ile (V122I) transthyretin mutated amyloidosis (ATTRm). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case in the literature reporting such pulmonary lesions in ATTRm amyloidosis, and notably diagnosed through cryobiopsy. A 51-year-old man from Mali with a past medical history of bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome presented erectile dysfunction, asthenia and worsening dyspnoea over the past year. He presented signs of cardiac failure; histological and radiological investigations diagnosed cardiac amyloidosis. He was found homozygote for the V122I mutation in transthyretin. A diffuse cystic lung disease (DCLD) was noted on computed tomography (CT) scan. We performed a transbronchial pulmonary cryobiopsy that revealed histological transthyretin amyloid deposits. This case report illustrates the safety and usefulness of cryobiopsy in the setting of DCLD and extends ATTRm amyloidosis as a possible cause of DCLD.
