Abstract

Although trace element distribution and mobility have been investigated in agricultural soils, precise information about the extent to which anthropogenic activities influence soil quality remains limited. This study quantified trace element distribution (As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Pd, Sb, Zn) in agricultural and grazing land soils in metropolitan France based on the results from the GEMAS project [1]. The dataset is composed of 214 samples from agricultural soils (Ap) and 218 samples from grazing land soils (Gr) for total and mobile fractions. The geological substrates have been divided into five main classes to correlate with geology: (i) shales, (ii) sandstones and sands, (iii) carbonate rocks, (iv) metamorphic rocks, and (v) intrusive and igneous rocks. These nine metal elements were selected using the enrichment factor higher than 40 in most of the five rock classes, specifically As and Cd. Arsenic had a median of 9.04 mg/kg and 9.5 mg/kg for Ap and Gr, respectively, on all kind of bedrocks. These values are similar, and this is also the case for Cd: 0.215 mg/kg and 0.249 mg/kg for Ap and Gr, soils respectively. Kriging interpolation was used to analyze the spatial distribution of both elements in French soils. A correlation between geology and mining was observed for the distribution of As in France, for example, the southern part of Massif Central [2]. However, Cd shows a different pattern. The highest concentrations are situated in the sedimentary basin (Aquitaine and Parisien), as well as in the South Massif Central and South Vosges. This could be related to anthropogenic activities [3]. If the high concentration level of As is not due to anthropisation, its distribution could be used as a reference for pollution in France. The concentrations differ depending on the bedrock. On the contrary, Cd concentrations are not correlated to geology, but high Cd concentrations are linked with cultural practices. The lowest level of Cd concentration could only be used for a reference.&nbsp

Abstract

This study explores the groundwater vulnerability of the chalk aquifer (northern part of France) using a well-known overlay and index DRASTIC method for intrinsic scenario and using land use (LU) parameter as additional factor. Different sources have allowed to compile data necessary to map the vulnerability of the aquifer under study, which used to generate the seven parameters of DRASTIC, namely: groundwater Depth, groundwater Recharge, lithology, Soil media, Topography, Impact of the vadose zone and hydraulic Conductivity. Applying the model in ArcGIS 10.2 platform leads to identify three classes of vulnerability: low, medium and high vulnerability. The highest DRASTIC indexes appear in areas where the groundwater depth is low and in more permeable unsaturated zones. The LU has a little effect on the distribution of vulnerability classes: this distribution is marked by the low vulnerability 44% against 6.5 of high vulnerability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Soil degradation by concentrated runoff and soil erosion induces major environmental and economic damages, notably in agricultural areas under temperate climates. The use of herbaceous vegetation aims to increase the hydraulic resistance and thus reduce runoff and soil erosion while retaining sediments on site. However, the identification of the most suitable species to mitigate runoff is often specific to a phytogeographical territory and hampered by the intraspecific variability, which reduces the transposition of a solution to other territories and the ability to quantify the effects of the vegetation. Using a plant trait‐based approach allows understanding and characterising the direct effects of the vegetation on runoff and soil erosion mitigation as well as on the sediment retention increase. Here, we review the influence of plant aboveground functional types and traits of herbaceous vegetation on the hydraulic resistance and sediment retention and the contentious effects of the functional diversity on the hydraulic resistance and sediment retention, within agricultural catchments. Using this knowledge, we propose applications of the trait‐based approach to design and manage herbaceous hedges for sediment retention and soil erosion control. This review synthesises recent advances regarding the effects of the functional traits on runoff and sediment retention and defines a trait‐based selection method of the plant species for runoff and soil erosion control. Abstract

This study concerns water erosion occuring on loamy hills of Alsace (France). It focuses on continuous grain corn, whose surface state characteritics (SSC) strongly influences runoff formation during spring. Our goal is to study the differences of surface state characteristics amongst different tillage treatments: conventional technique (based on plough use), no-tillage techniques and direct-drilling. The SSC's spatial variability created by tillage has been particularly investigated. Measurements of runoff and erosion have been carried out under natural and artificial rainfalls to complete surface observations. Main results indicate a decrease in runoff and erosion in no-till and direct-drilling treatments. Most of SSC differences between tillage treatments were observed on interrows. Based on SSC and runoff measurements, an indicator estimating the rainfall amounts required to observed runoff was built., Ce travail s'intéresse à l'érosion hydrique observée dans les secteurs de collines limoneuses d'Alsace. Il aborde le cas spécifique de la monoculture de maïs grain, dont l'état de surface (EDS) influence fortement la formation du ruissellement au cours du printemps, en raison de la formation de croûtes de battance. L'objectif de ce travail est d'étudier les états de surface entre différents itinéraires techniques : technique conventionnelle (basée sur le labour), techniques sans labour et semis-direct et de mettre en évidence des différences pouvant expliquer des variations des volumes ruisselés et des pertes en terre. Pour ce faire, des observations de surface ont été réalisées en tenant compte de l'organisation spatiale des EDS créée par le travail du sol. Ces observations ont été complétées par des mesures in situ de ruissellement et de pertes en terre sous pluies naturelles et artificielles. Les principaux résultats indiquent une diminution du ruissellement et de l'érosion en non-labour et en semis-direct. Les observations de surface montrent que, entre pratiques culturales, les différences d'EDS portent essentiellement sur les interrangs. Ces résultats ont été synthétisés sous la forme d'un indicateur estimant le cumul de précipitations nécessaires pour observer l'apparition d'EDS ruisselants.
