1. Neutrino oscillations along the Earth to probe flavor parameters: a NeuWorld

Abstract

On 2010 MINOS experiment was showing an hint of possible different mass splitting and mixing angles for neutrinos and anti-neutrinos, suggesting a charge-parity-time (CPT) violation in the lepton sector; last year 2012 a second result from MINOS showed a reduced discrepancy between the two set of parameters, nearly compatible with no CPT violation. We proposed an experiment for more precise estimation of neutrino oscillation parameters being useful not only for a complete discrimination for CPT scenarios, but also for mass hierarchy and theta 13 determination, and mostly for the first oscillated detection of tau and antitau neutrinos. We show an experiment, (the longest baseline neutrino oscillation test available by crossing most of Earth diameter, a NeuWorld), that may improve the oscillation measurement and disentangle at best any hypothetical CPT violation while testing tau appearance at the same time of the muon disappearance correlated. The experiment use a neutrino beam crossing the Earth, within an OPERA-like experiment from CERN (or Fermilab), in the direction of the IceCube DeepCore detector at the South Pole. Such a tuned beaming and its detection may lead to a strong signature of neutrino muon-tau mixing (nearly one anti tau or two tau a day, with 10 sigma in a year), even for an one per-cent OPERA-like NeuWorld experiment., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1012.3245; Opera experiment reference added

Abstract

Ultra High Cosmic Rays) made by He-like lightest nuclei might fit clustering along Cen A. Moreover He like UHECR nuclei explain Virgo absence because the light nuclei fragility and opacity above a few Mpc. We foresaw (2009) that UHECR He from Cen-A AGN being fragile should partially fragment into secondaries at tens EeV multiplet (D,He^{3},p) as the recent twin multiplet discovered ones (AUGER-ICRC-2011), at 20 EeV along Cen A UHECR clustering. We suggest that UHECR are also heavy radioactive galactic nuclei as Ni^{56}, Ni^{57} and Co^{57} widely bent (tens degree up to 100 degrees) by galactic fields. UHECR radioactivity and decay in flight at hundreds keV is boosted (by huge Lorentz factor (billion) leading to PeVs electrons and consequent synchrotron TeVs gamma offering UHECR-TeV correlated sky anisotropy. 3. Inconsistence of super-luminal Cern-Opera neutrino speed with observed SN1987A burst and neutrino mixing for any imaginary neutrino mass

Abstract

We tried to fit in any way the recent Opera-Cern claims of a neutrino super-luminal speed with observed Supernova SN1987A neutrino burst and all (or most) neutrino flavor oscillation. We considered three main frame-works: (1) A tachyon imaginary neutrino mass, whose timing is nevertheless in conflict with observed IMB-Kamiokande SN1987A burst by thousands of billion times longer. (2) An ad hoc anti-tachyon model whose timing shrinkage may accommodate SN1987A burst but greatly disagree with energy independent Cern-Opera super-luminal speed. (3) A split neutrino flavor speed (among a common real mass relativistic neutrino electron component and a super-luminal neutrino {\mu}) in an ad hoc frozen speed scenario that is leading to the prompt neutrino de-coherence and the rapid flavor mixing (between electron and muon ones) that are in conflict with most oscillation records. Therefore we concluded that an error must be hidden in Opera-Cern time calibration (as indeed recent rumors seem to confirm). We are also reminding the relevance of the guaranteed minimal atmospheric neutrino mass whose detection may be achieved by a milliseconds graviton-neutrino split time delay among gravity burst and neutronization neutrino peak in any future SN explosion in Andromeda recordable in Megaton neutrino detector., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, corrected and updated atmospheric neutrino simulation

4. Cen A persistence and Virgo absence versus updated maps to understand UHECR nature

Abstract

Ultra High Cosmic Rays (UHECR) should be tracing their sources, making a new astronomy. Their events counting are finally growing, by Auger experiment, into cosmic sky. Their map should follow the mass distribution in a narrow cosmic volume (the GZK cut off region, correlated with Super Galactic Plane (SPG) or Local Group) if they were protons, as most expected. Recently the last 69 UHECR did not longer follow the SGP map, opening the way to very different correlations, and extreme bending connection; we reconfirm here our Lightest Nuclei interpretation, while showing here the last event over different radio, X, Gamma and tens TeV CR maps. The Virgo Cluster absence, the persistence of UHECR clustering along Cen A, the first triplet along Vela seem to confirm light nuclei UHECR understanding, implying a very narrow Universe view, even partially of galactic origin. UHECR fragments might follow (at half, fourth of the energy) the same UHECR map with a tail or a crown clustering around main UHECR group. Also secondary gamma and UHE neutrino might trace partially those maps. 5. Deep Core muon neutrino rate and anisotropy by mixing and CPT violation

Abstract

Neutrinos are allowed to mix and to oscillate among their flavor. Muon and tau in particular oscillate at largest values.Last Minos experiment claimed possible difference among their matter and anti-matter masses, leading to a first violation of the most believed CPT symmetry.Isotropically born atmospheric muon neutrino at 20-80 GeV, while up-going, they might be partially suppressed by mixing in analogy to historical SuperKamiokande muon neutrino disappearance into tau, leading to large scale anisotropy signals. Here we show an independent muon rate foreseen in Deep Core based on observed SK signals extrapolated to DeepCore mass and its surrounding. Our rate prediction partially differ from previous ones. The neutrino muon disappearance into tau is leading to an anisotropy in vertical up-going muon track: in particular along channel 3-5 we expect a huge rate (tens of thousand of events) of neutral current events, charged current electron and inclined crossing muons. Moreover at channel 6-9 we expect a severe suppression of the rate due to muon disappearance (in CPT conserved frame). Such an anisotropy might be partially tested by more than one string detection at E> 45 GeV energy. A CPT violation may induce a more remarkable suppression of vertical up-going tracks because of larger anti-neutrino muon reduction for E> 35 GeV., Comment: 6 pages, 14 figures

6. An apparent GRBs evolution around us or a sampling of thin GRB beaming jets?

Abstract

The gamma ray burst apparent average isotropic power versus their red-shift of all known GRB (Sept.2009) is reported. It calls for an unrealistic Gamma Ray Burst Evolution around us or it just probe the need of a very thin gamma precession-jet model. These precessing and spinning jet are originated by Inverse Compton and-or Synchrotron Radiation at pulsars or micro-quasars sources, by ultra-relativistic electrons. These Jets are most powerful at Supernova birth, blazing, once on axis, to us and flashing GRB detector. The trembling of the thin jet (spinning, precessing, bent by magnetic fields) explains naturally the observed erratic multi-explosive structure of different GRBs and its rare re-brightening. The jets are precessing (by binary companion or inner disk asymmetry) and decaying by power law on time scales to a few hours. GRB blazing occurs inside the observer cone of view only a seconds duration times; because relativistic synchrotron (or IC) laws the jet angle is thinner in gamma but wider in X band. Its apparent brightening is so well correlated with its hardness (The Amati correlation). This explain the wider and longer X GRB afterglow duration and the (not so much) rare presence of X-ray precursors well before the apparent main GRB explosion. The jet lepton maybe originated by an inner primary hadron core (as well as pions and muons secondary Jets). The EGRET, AGILE and Fermi few hardest and late GeV gamma might be PeV neutron beta decay in flight observed in-axis under a relativistic shrinkage., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, Vulcano 2009

Abstract

Photon Astronomy ruled the last four centuries while wider photon band ruled last radio-X-Gamma century of discovery. Present decade may see the rise and competition of UHECR and UHE Neutrino Astronomy. Tau Neutrino may win and be the first flavor revealed. It could soon rise at horizons in AUGER at EeV energies, if nucleons are the main UHECR currier. If on the contrary UHECR are Lightest nuclei (He, Li. B) UHE tau neutrino maybe suppressed at EeV and enhanced at tens -hundred PeV. Detectable in AMIGA and HEAT denser sub-array in AUGER. Abstract

UHECR may be either nucleons or nuclei; in the latter case the Lightest Nuclei, as He, Li, Be, explains at best the absence of Virgo signals and the crowding of events around Cen-A bent by galactic magnetic fields. This model fit the observed nuclear mass composition discovered in AUGER. However UHECR nucleons above GZK produce EeV neutrinos while Heavy Nuclei, as Fe UHECR do not produce much. UHECR He nuclei at few tens EeV suffer nuclear fragmentation (producing low energetic neutrino at tens PeVs) but it suffer anyway photo-pion GZK suppression (leading to EeV neutrinos) once above one-few 10^{20} eV. Abstract

Last and nearest GRB-XRF 080109 has been an exceptional lesson on GRB nature. After a decade (since 25 April 08) we know that Supernovae may often contain a Jet. Its persistent activity may shine on axis as a GRBs. Such a persistent, thin beamed gamma jet may be powered by either a BH (Black Holes) or Pulsars. Late stages of these jets may loose the SN traces and appear as a short GRB or a long orphan GRB (depending on jet angular velocity and view angle). XRF are peripherical viewing of the jets. These precessing and spinning gamma jet are originated by Inverse Compton and-or Synchrotron Radiation at pulsars or micro-quasars sources, by ultra-relativistic electrons. These Jets are most powerful at Supernova birth, blazing, once on axis, to us and flashing GRB detector. 12. Why Tau First?

Abstract

Electron neutrino has been the first neutral lepton to be foreseen and discovered last century. The un-ordered muon and its neutrino arose later by cosmic rays. The tau discover, the heaviest, the most unstable charged lepton, was found surprisingly on 1975. Its neutrino was hardly revealed just on 2000. So why High Energy Neutrino Astronomy should rise first via tau neutrino, the last, the most rare one? The reasons are based on a chain of three favorable coincidences found last decade: the neutrino masses and their flavor mixing, the UHECR opacity on Cosmic Black Body (GZK cut off on BBR), the amplified tau air-shower decaying in flight. Indeed guaranteed UHE GZK tau neutrinos, feed by muon mixing, while skimming the Earth might lead to boosted UHE tau, mostly horizontal ones. These UHE lepton decay in flight are spread, amplified, noise free Air-Shower: a huge event for an unique particle. To be observed soon: within Auger sky, in present decade. Abstract

Neutrino masses might be as light as a few time the atmospheric neutrino mass splitting. High Energy ZeV cosmic neutrinos (in Z-Showering model) might hit relic ones at each mass in different resonance energies in our nearby Universe. This non-degenerated density and energy must split UHE Z-boson secondaries (in Z-Burst model) leading to multi injection of UHECR nucleons within future extreme AUGER energy. Secondaries of Z-Burst as neutral gamma, below a few tens EeV are better surviving local GZK cut-off and they might explain recent Hires BL-Lac UHECR correlations at small angles. A different high energy resonance must lead to Glashow's anti-neutrino showers while hitting electrons in matter. In air, Glashow's anti-neutrino showers lead to collimated and directional air-showers offering a new Neutrino Astronomy. At greater energy around PeV, Tau escaping mountains and Earth and decaying in flight are effectively showering in air sky. These Horizontal showering is splitting by geomagnetic field in forked shapes. Such air-showers secondaries release amplified and beamed gamma bursts (like observed TGF), made also by muon and electron pair bundles, with their accompanying rich Cherenkov flashes. Also planet' s largest (Saturn, Jupiter) atmosphere limbs offer an ideal screen for UHE GZK and Z-burst tau neutrino, because their largest sizes. Titan thick atmosphere and small radius are optimal for discovering up-going resonant Glashow resonant showers. Earth detection of Neutrino showering by twin Magic Telescopes on top mountains, or by balloons and satellites arrays facing the limbs are the simplest and cheapest way toward UHE Neutrino Astronomy ., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures; an author's name correction and Journal Reference

Abstract

Lymphoma represents a heterogeneous hematological malignancy (HM), which is characterized by severe immunosuppression. Patients diagnosed of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) during the course of HM have been described to have poor outcome, with only few reports specifically addressing lymphoma patients. Here, we investigated the clinical behavior and clinical parameters of a large multicenter cohort of adult patients with different lymphoma subtypes, with the aim of identifying predictors of death. The study included 856 patients, of whom 619 were enrolled prospectively in a 1-year frame and were followed-up for a median of 66 days (range 1-395). Patients were managed as outpatient (not-admitted cohort, n 5 388) or required hospitalization (n 5 468), and median age was 63 years (range 19-94). Overall, the 30- and 100-days mortality was 13% (95% confidence interval (CI), 11% to 15%) and 23% (95% CI, 20% to 27%), respectively. Antilymphoma treatment, including anti-CD20 containing regimens, did not impact survival. Patients with Hodgkin’s lymphoma had the more favorable survival, but this was partly related to significantly younger age. The time interval between lymphoma diagnosis and COVID-19 was inversely related to mortality. Multivariable analysis recognized 4 easy-to-use factors (age, gender, lymphocyte, and platelet count) that were associated with risk of death, both in the admitted and in the not-admitted cohort (HR 3.79 and 8.85 for the intermediate- and high-risk group, respectively). Overall, our study shows that patients should not be deprived of the best available treatment of their underlying disease and indicates which patients are at higher risk of death. Abstract

Midostaurin is used in combination with chemotherapy to treat patients with newly diagnosed FLT3-mutated acute myeloid leukemia. Chemotherapy-induced neutropenia exposes these patients to a significant risk of invasive fungal infections (IFIs). International guidelines recommend primary antifungal prophylaxis with posaconazole (PCZ) but nested analysis of a phase III trial showed that strong PCZ inhibition of CYP3A4 diminished midostaurin metabolism and increased midostaurin plasma levels; however, midostaurin-related adverse events (AEs) were only moderately exacerbated. We conducted a prospective multicenter real-life study to evaluate (i) how often concerns around PCZ-midostaurin interactions made the hematologist prescribe antifungals other than PCZ, (ii) how remarkably PCZ increased midostaurin plasma levels, and (iii) how significantly PCZ-midostaurin interactions influenced hematologic and safety outcomes of induction therapy. Although the hematologists were blinded to pharmacokinetic findings, as many as 16 of 35 evaluable patients were prescribed antifungal prophylaxis with micafungin, weak CYP3A4 inhibitor, in place of PCZ (p < 0.001 for deviation from guidelines). In the 19 patients managed as per guidelines, PCZ-midostaurin interactions were more remarkable than previously characterized, such that at the end of induction therapy midostaurin minimum plasma concentration (Cmin) was greater than three times higher than reported; moreover, midostaurin Cmin, maximum plasma concentration, and area under the curve were more than or equal to four times higher with PCZ than micafungin. Hematologic outcomes (complete remission and duration of severe neutropenia) and safety outcomes (midostaurin-related any grade or grade ≥3 AEs) were nonetheless similar for patients exposed to PCZ or micafungin, as was the number of breakthrough IFIs. Abstract

COVID-19 is associated with high mortality in patients with haematological malignancies (HM) and rate of seroconversion is unknown. The ITA-HEMA-COV project (NCT04352556) investigated patterns of seroconversion for SARS-CoV-2 IgG in patients with HMs. A total of 237 patients, SARS-CoV-2 PCR-positive with at least one SARS-CoV-2 IgG test performed during their care, entered the analysis. Among these, 62 (26·2%) had myeloid, 121 (51·1%) lymphoid and 54 (22·8%) plasma cell neoplasms. Overall, 69% of patients (164 of 237) had detectable IgG SARS-CoV-2 serum antibodies. Serologically negative patients (31%, 73 of 237) were evenly distributed across patients with myeloid, lymphoid and plasma cell neoplasms. In the multivariable logistic regression, chemoimmunotherapy [odds ratio (OR), 3·42; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1·04–11·21; P = 0·04] was associated with a lower rate of seroconversion. This effect did not decline after 180 days from treatment withdrawal (OR, 0·35; 95% CI: 0·11–1·13; P = 0·08). This study demonstrates a low rate of seroconversion in HM patients and indicates that treatment-mediated immune dysfunction is the main driver. As a consequence, we expect a low rate of seroconversion after vaccination and thus we suggest testing the efficacy of seroconversion in HM patients.

The Transplant Centers belonging to Gruppo Italiano per il Trapianto di Midollo Osseo (GITMO) conducted a survey with the aim of evaluating the effect of SARS-CoV2 pandemic on the allogeneic transplant activity in Italy. The pandemic period from 1/3/2020 to 31/7/2020 was compared with the same period in 2019. Overall, in 2020 there was a 2.4% reduction in the number of allo-HCT cases compared to 2019. Interestingly, this deflection did not affect the acute leukemia cases (+5.7% in 2020). The use of peripheral blood-derived stem cells (+10.7%) and cryopreservation (97.4% of the centers) was highly adopted in 2020. Despite the sanitary emergency, almost all of the surveyed centers declared no impact of SARS-CoV2 pandemic on the transplant timing and outcomes, and the sanitary policy was positively evaluated by the majority of centers. The emergency measures ensured that only a minority of the allo-HCT patients had been infected by SARS-CoV2; however, a mortality of 42.1% among the allo-HCT patients hospitalized for COVID-19 was recorded. This survey gives us the information that the GITMO Group reacted positively to the pandemic. Thanks to the emergency strategies, the Italian allo-HCT activity continued safely, showing only a minor deflection and offering the same probability of cure to the transplanted patients.

Abstract

Background: Several small studies on patients with COVID-19 and haematological malignancies are available showing a high mortality in this population. The Italian Hematology Alliance on COVID-19 aimed to collect data from adult patients with haematological malignancies who required hospitalisation for COVID-19. Methods: This multicentre, retrospective, cohort study included adult patients (aged ≥18 years) with diagnosis of a WHO-defined haematological malignancy admitted to 66 Italian hospitals between Feb 25 and May 18, 2020, with laboratory-confirmed and symptomatic COVID-19. Data cutoff for this analysis was June 22, 2020. The primary outcome was mortality and evaluation of potential predictive parameters of mortality. We calculated standardised mortality ratios between observed death in the study cohort and expected death by applying stratum-specific mortality rates of the Italian population with COVID-19 and an Italian cohort of 31 993 patients with haematological malignancies without COVID-19 (data up to March 1, 2019). Multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify factors associated with overall survival. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT04352556, and the prospective part of the study is ongoing. Findings: We enrolled 536 patients with a median follow-up of 20 days (IQR 10–34) at data cutoff, 85 (16%) of whom were managed as outpatients. 440 (98%) of 451 hospitalised patients completed their hospital course (were either discharged alive or died). 198 (37%) of 536 patients died. When compared with the general Italian population with COVID-19, the standardised mortality ratio was 2·04 (95% CI 1·77–2·34) in our whole study cohort and 3·72 (2·86–4·64) in individuals younger than 70 years. Abstract

COVID-19 is associated with high mortality in patients with haematological malignancies (HM) and rate of seroconversion is unknown. The ITA-HEMA-COV project (NCT04352556) investigated patterns of seroconversion for SARS-CoV-2 IgG in patients with HMs. A total of 237 patients, SARS-CoV-2 PCR-positive with at least one SARS-CoV-2 IgG test performed during their care, entered the analysis. Among these, 62 (26·2%) had myeloid, 121 (51·1%) lymphoid and 54 (22·8%) plasma cell neoplasms. Overall, 69% of patients (164 of 237) had detectable IgG SARS-CoV-2 serum antibodies. Serologically negative patients (31%, 73 of 237) were evenly distributed across patients with myeloid, lymphoid and plasma cell neoplasms. In the multivariable logistic regression, chemoimmunotherapy [odds ratio (OR), 3·42; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1·04–11·21; P = 0·04] was associated with a lower rate of seroconversion. This effect did not decline after 180 days from treatment withdrawal (OR, 0·35; 95% CI: 0·11–1·13; P = 0·08). This study demonstrates a low rate of seroconversion in HM patients and indicates that treatment-mediated immune dysfunction is the main driver. As a consequence, we expect a low rate of seroconversion after vaccination and thus we suggest testing the efficacy of seroconversion in HM patients.

Abstract

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) is recommended for diagnosing lung infiltrates (LI) in patients with hematologic malignancy (HM). Prospective data on the impact of BAL on survival are still lacking. We conducted a prospective observational study on patients who performed BAL for LI among 3055 HM patients hospitalized from January to September 2018. The BAL was performed in 145 out of 434 patients who developed LI, at a median time of four days from LI detection. The median age was 60 (1-83). Most patients had an acute myeloid leukemia/myelodisplastic syndrome (81), followed by lymphoma (41), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (27), and other types of HM (36). A putative causal agent was detected in 111 cases (76%), and in 89 cases (61%) the BAL results provided guidance to antimicrobial treatment. We observed a significantly improved outcome of LI at day +30 in patients who could receive a BAL-driven antimicrobial treatment (improvement/resolution rate: 71% vs 55%; P = .04). Moreover, we observed a significantly improved outcome in 120-day overall survival (120d-OS) (78% vs 59%; P = .009) and 120-day attributable mortality (120d-AM) (11% vs 30%; P = 0.003) for patients who could receive a BAL-driven treatment. The multivariate analysis showed that BAL-driven antimicrobial treatment was significantly associated with better 120d-OS and lower 120d-AM. We did not observe any severe adverse events. In conclusion BAL allows detection of a putative agent of LI in about 75% of cases, it is feasible and well tolerated in most cases, demonstrating that a BAL-driven antimicrobial treatment allows improvement of clinical outcome and survival.

Abstract

The gamma ray burst apparent average isotropic power versus their red-shift of all known GRB (Sept.2009) is reported. It calls for an unrealistic Gamma Ray Burst Evolution around us or it just probe the need of a very thin gamma precession-jet model. These precessing and spinning jet are originated by Inverse Compton and-or Synchrotron Radiation at pulsars or micro-quasars sources, by ultra-relativistic electrons. These Jets are most powerful at Supernova birth, blazing, once on axis, to us and flashing GRB detector. The trembling of the thin jet (spinning, precessing, bent by magnetic fields) explains naturally the observed erratic multi-explosive structure of different GRBs and its rare re-brightening. The jets are precessing (by binary companion or inner disk asymmetry) and decaying by power law on time scales to a few hours. GRB blazing occurs inside the observer cone of view only a seconds duration times; because relativistic synchrotron (or IC) laws the jet angle is thinner in gamma but wider in X band. Its apparent brightening is so well correlated with its hardness (The Amati correlation). This explain the wider and longer X GRB afterglow duration and the (not so much) rare presence of X-ray precursors well before the apparent main GRB explosion. The jet lepton maybe originated by an inner primary hadron core (as well as pions and muons secondary Jets). 44. Plane-Strain Fracture Toughness of High-Strength Aluminum Alloys

Abstract

The plane-strain fracture toughness of precipitation-hardening aluminum alloys of 7000 and 2000 series and a strain-hardening alloy 5456 have been determined at both room temperature and −320 F using circumferentially notched rounds. These results show that the plane-strain fracture toughness is an inverse function of the yield strength and that at equivalent yield-strength levels the 7000 series of alloys is tougher than the 2000 series of alloys. Plane strain-fracture toughness values were determined using “pop-in” technique employing both the center crack and single-edge-notch specimens. Comparable values were obtained in all examples tested. The effects of impurity elements, iron and silicon, on the fracture toughness of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy were investigated using a special low iron-and-silicon melt of 7075-T6 material. Reduction of these impurity elements resulted in a 30 to 45 percent upgrading of the plane-strain fracture toughness of this alloy. These data have been interpreted in terms of the process zone size, dT, using electron microfractography as an indication of this parameter. The plane strain-fracture toughness values have been used to calculate the breaking stress of part-through-cracked panel. These calculations have been confirmed experimentally for two alloys. Such data have direct applicability in the design of structures.

45. The Relationship Between Fracture Toughness and Stress Concentration Factors for Several High-Strength Aluminum Alloys

Abstract

For the case of an elliptical notch in an infinite solid, a relationship between the stress concentration factor and the fracture toughness parameter was examined. Edge-notched specimens from three high-strength aluminum alloys were tensile loaded to failure. The resulting data were analyzed in the light of this relationship. It was indicated that a predicted proportionality between the fracture toughness parameter and the square root of the notch root radius exists. Further examination of the relationship based upon the proportionality showed that fracture occurs at a fixed state of strain within a plastic zone having a size proportional to the original root radius. However, a departure from the predicted behavior was evident with the introduction of plane strain components at the notch root. It was also demonstrated that the use of specimens with intermediate root radii for either the evaluation of a single material or as a basis of comparison between materials can lead to invalid conclusions. The reversion of fracture toughness data from blunt notch specimens to stress concentration factors is shown for one alloy. Due to a constancy in the ratio of the fracture parameter to the nominal stress, the resulting factor lacks sensitivity.

Abstract

Criteria for predicting pressure vessel performance based on fracture toughness are reviewed in general terms. Experimental studies of small pressure vessels fabricated of high toughness, high strength steel 4330V (Mod + Si) are described. Data presented include fatigue life in presence of a small part-through-crack and burst properties of the fatigue cracked cylinders. Interpretation of the fatigue data is based on Paris’ relationship dadN=K4M. The failure stresses are discussed in relation to the stress elevating effect of local bulging on the apparent fracture toughness. The behavior observed in testing full scale high strength pressure vessels fabricated from materials having intermediate fracture toughness, namely, D6A steel at 200,000-psi yield strength and 300M steel at 230,000-psi yield strength and materials having limited fracture toughness, namely, twenty percent nickel maraging steel at 280,000-psi yield strength, are discussed in relation to the ratio of fracture toughness to plane-strain fracture toughness based on the part-through-crack model. Precautions necessary for fabrication and inspection to insure reliable performance are discussed.

Abstract

Last and nearest GRB-XRF 080109 has been an exceptional lesson on GRB nature. After a decade (since 25 April 08) we know that Supernovae may often contain a Jet. Its persistent activity may shine on axis as a GRBs. Such a persistent, thin beamed gamma jet may be powered by either a BH (Black Holes) or Pulsars. Late stages of these jets may loose the SN traces and appear as a short GRB or a long orphan GRB (depending on jet angular velocity and view angle). XRF are peripherical viewing of the jets. These precessing and spinning gamma jet are originated by Inverse Compton and-or Synchrotron Radiation at pulsars or micro-quasars sources, by ultra-relativistic electrons.
