Real-time detection of tsunami waves is a fundamental part of tsunami early warning and alert systems. Several algorithms have been proposed in the literature for that. Three of them and a newly developed one, based on the Fast Iterative Filtering technique, are applied here to a large number of records from the DART monitoring network in the Pacific Ocean. The techniques are compared in terms of earthquake and tsunami event-detection capabilities and statistical properties of the detection curves. The classical Mofjeld's algorithm is very efficient in detecting seismic waves and tsunamis, but it does not always characterize the tsunami waveform correctly. Other techniques, based on Empirical Orthogonal Functions and cascade of filters respectively, show better results in wave characterization but they usually have larger residual than Mofjeld's. The FIF-based detection method shows promising results in terms of detection rates of tsunami events, filtering of seismic waves and characterization of wave amplitude and period. The technique is a good candidate for monitoring networks and in data assimilation applications for realtime tsunami forecasts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 1783 Scilla landslide–tsunami (Calabria, southern Italy) is a well-studied event that caused more than 1500 fatalities on the beaches close to the town. This paper complements a previous work that was based on numerical simulations and was focused on the very local effects of the tsunami in Scilla. In this study we extend the computational domain to cover a wider portion of western Calabria and northeastern Sicily, including the western side of the Straits of Messina. This investigation focuses on Capo Peloro area (the easternmost cape of Sicily), where the highest tsunami effects outside Scilla were reported. Important tsunami observations, such as the wave height reaching 6 m at Torre degli Inglesi and flooding that reached over 600 m inland, have been successfully modeled but only by means of a high-resolution (10 m) topo-bathymetric grid, since coarser grids were inadequate for the purpose. Interestingly, the inundation of the small lake of Pantano Piccolo could not be reproduced by using today's coastal morphology, since a coastal dune now acts as a barrier against tsunamis. Historical analysis suggests that this dune was not in place at the time of the tsunami occurred and that a ground depression extending from the lake to the northern coast is a remnant of an ancient channel that was used as a pathway in Roman times. The removal of such an obstacle and the remodeling of the coeval morphology allows the simulations to reproduce the tsunami penetration up to the lake, thus supporting the hypothesis that the 1783 tsunami entered the lake following the Roman channel track. A further result of this study is that the computed regional tsunami propagation pattern provides a useful hint for assessing tsunami hazards in the Straits of Messina area, which is one of the most exposed areas to tsunami threats in Italy and in the Mediterranean Sea overall.

Tsunamis are unpredictable and infrequent but potentially large impact natural disasters. To prepare, mitigate and prevent losses from tsunamis, probabilistic hazard and risk analysis methods have been developed and have proved useful. However, large gaps and uncertainties still exist and many steps in the assessment methods lack information, theoretical foundation, or commonly accepted methods. Moreover, applied methods have very different levels of maturity, from already advanced probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis for earthquake sources, to less mature probabilistic risk analysis. In this review we give an overview of the current state of probabilistic tsunami hazard and risk analysis. Identifying research gaps, we offer suggestions for future research directions. An extensive literature list allows for branching into diverse aspects of this scientific approach.

The NEAM Tsunami Hazard Model 2018 (NEAMTHM18) is a probabilistic hazard model for tsunamis generated by earthquakes. It covers the coastlines of the North-eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and connected seas (NEAM). NEAMTHM18 was designed as a three-phase project. The first two phases were dedicated to the model development and hazard calculations, following a formalized decision-making process based on a multiple-expert protocol. The third phase was dedicated to documentation and dissemination. The hazard assessment workflow was structured in Steps and Levels. There are four Steps: Step-1) probabilistic earthquake model; Step-2) tsunami generation and modeling in deep water; Step-3) shoaling and inundation; Step-4) hazard aggregation and uncertainty quantification. Each Step includes a different number of Levels. Level-0 always describes the input data; the other Levels describe the intermediate results needed to proceed from one Step to another. Alternative datasets and models were considered in the implementation. The epistemic hazard uncertainty was quantified through an ensemble modeling technique accounting for alternative models’ weights and yielding a distribution of hazard curves represented by the mean and various percentiles. Hazard curves were calculated at 2,343 Points of Interest (POI) distributed at an average spacing of ∼20 km. Precalculated probability maps for five maximum inundation heights (MIH) and hazard intensity maps for five average return periods (ARP) were produced from hazard curves. In the entire NEAM Region, MIHs of several meters are rare but not impossible. Considering a 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years (ARP≈2,475 years), the POIs with MIH >5 m are fewer than 1% and are all in the Mediterranean on Libya, Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece coasts. In the North-East Atlantic, POIs with MIH >3 m are on the coasts of Mauritania and Gulf of Cadiz. Overall, 30% of the POIs have MIH >1 m. NEAMTHM18 results and documentation are available through the TSUMAPS-NEAM project website (http://www.tsumaps-neam.eu/), featuring an interactive web mapper. Although the NEAMTHM18 cannot substitute in-depth analyses at local scales, it represents the first action to start local and more detailed hazard and risk assessments and contributes to designing evacuation maps for tsunami early warning.

Background/objectivesStent underexpansion is a risk factor for in-stent restenosis and stent thrombosis. Existing techniques to optimize stent expansion are sometimes ineffective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of Excimer Laser Coronary Angioplasty (ELCA) in improving stent expansion when high-pressure non-compliant balloon inflation was ineffective.Methods and resultsECLA ablation was performed at high energy during contrast injection and only within the underexpanded stent. The primary endpoint of successful laser dilatation was defined as an increase of at least 1mm(2) in minimal stent cross-sectional area (MSA) on IVUS or an increase of at least 20% in minimal stent diameter (MSD) by QCA, following redilatation with the same non-compliant balloon that had been unsuccessful prior to ELCA. Secondary endpoints were cardiac death, myocardial infarction (MI) and target lesion revascularization. Between June 2009 and November 2011, 28 patients with an underexpanded stent despite high-pressure balloon inflation were included. The mean laser catheter size was 1.2±0.4 (range 0.9-2.0mm) and a mean of 62±12mJ/mm(2) at 62±21hertz were required for optimal expansion. Laser-assisted stent dilatation was successful in 27 cases (96.4%), with an improvement in MSD by QCA (1.6±0.6mm at baseline to 2.6±0.6mm post-procedure) and MSA by IVUS (3.5±1.1mm(2) to 7.1±1.9mm(2)). Periprocedural MI occurred in 7.1%, transient slow-flow in 3.6% and ST elevation in 3.6%. During follow-up, there were no MIs, there was 1 cardiac-death, and TLR occurred in 6.7%.ConclusionsThe ELLEMENT study confirms the feasibility of ELCA with contrast injection to improve stent underexpansion in undilatable stented lesions.

Geophysical surveys in the eastern slope of the Gela Basin (Strait of Sicily, central Mediterranean) contributed to the identification of several episodes of sediment mass transport, recorded by scars and deposits of various dimensions within the Pleistocene succession. In addition to a huge failure called Gela Slide with volume exceeding 600 km3, the most studied events show volumes estimated between 0.5 and 1.5 km3, which is common to many other submarine landslide deposits in this region and that can therefore be considered as a characteristic value. In this work, the tsunamigenic potential of two of such landslides, the so-called Northern Twin Slide and South Gela Basin Slide located about 50 km apart along the eastern slope of the Gela Basin, are investigated using numerical codes that describe the onset and motion of the slide, as well as the ensuing tsunami generation and propagation. The results provide the wave height of these tsunami events on the coast of southern Sicily and Malta and can be taken as representative of the tsunamigenic potential of typical landslides occurring along the slope of the Gela Basin.

During a workshop of experimental archaeology organized by the University of Bologna in 2017, a casting pit that was used for experimental activities in 2012 has been re-excavated five years later to verify the impact of post-depositional processes and to test some useful procedures for documenting this kind of archaeological features. it has been excavated an experimental casting pit realized and used in 2012 for the production of bronze tools. One of the issues in the metallurgical technologies research of the Italian bronze age concerns the identification of areas of casting activities. The aim of this experiment is to obtain a set of information useful to outline archaeological markers which may lead to the identification of casting pits and therefore to define the best suitable digging and documentation strategies to be adopted in the field. Moreover, it is also highlighted how the combining approach of stratigraphy and experimental archaeology may provide, on the long term, relevant data to define more clearly the causal relations between human behavior (systemic context) and strata (archaeological context) and the dynamics of transformation between productive activities and postdepositional processes.

The adoption of Nature-Based Solutions (NBSs) represents a novel means to mitigate natural hazards. In the framework of the OPERANDUM project, this study introduces a methodology to assess the efficiency of the NBSs and a series of Open-Air Laboratories (OALs) regarded as a proof-of-concept for the wider uptake of NBSs. The OALs are located in Finland, Greece, UK, Italy, and Ireland. The methodology is based on a wide modeling activity, incorporated in the context of future climate scenarios. Herein, we present a series of models’ chains able to estimate the efficiency of the NBSs. While the presented models are mainly well-established, their coupling represents a first fundamental step in the study of the long-term efficacy and impact of the NBSs. In the selected sites, NBSs are utilized to cope with distinct natural hazards: floods, droughts, landslides, salt intrusion, and nutrient and sediment loading. The study of the efficacy of NBSs to mitigate these hazards belongs to a series of works devoted to the implementation of NBSs for environmental purposes. Our findings prove that land management plays a crucial role in the process. Specifically, the selected NBSs include intensive forestry; the conversion of urban areas to grassland; dunes; marine seagrass; water retention ponds; live cribwalls; and high-density plantations of woody vegetation and deep-rooted herbaceous vegetation. The management of natural resources should eventually consider the effect of NBSs on urban and rural areas, as their employment is becoming widespread.

Alexandria is the second biggest city in Egypt with regards to population, is a key economic area in northern Africa and has very important tourist activity. Historical records indicate that it was severely affected by a number of tsunami events. In this work we assess the tsunami hazard by running numerical simulations of tsunami impact in Alexandria through the worst-case credible tsunami scenario analysis (WCTSA). We identify three main seismic sources: the western Hellenic Arc (WHA – reference event AD 365, Mw = 8.5), the eastern Hellenic Arc (EHA – reference event 1303, Mw = 8.0) and the Cyprus Arc (CA – hypothetical scenario earthquake with Mw = 8.0), inferred from the tectonic setting and from historical tsunami catalogues. All numerical simulations are carried out in two sea level conditions (mean sea level and maximum high-tide sea level) by means of the code UBO-TSUFD, developed and maintained by the Tsunami Research Team of the University of Bologna. Relevant tsunami metrics are computed for each scenario and then used to build aggregated fields such as the maximum flood depth and the maximum inundation area. We find that the case that produces the most relevant flooding in Alexandria is the EHA scenario, with wave heights up to 4 m. The aggregate fields are used for a building vulnerability assessment according to a methodology developed in the framework of the EU-FP6 project SCHEMA and further refined in this study, based on the adoption of a suitable building damage matrix and on water inundation depth. It is found that in the districts of El Dekhila and Al Amriyah, to the south-west of the port of Dekhila, over 12 000 (13 400 in the case of maximum high tide) buildings could be affected and hundreds of them could sustain damaging consequences, ranging from critical damage to total collapse. It is also found that in the same districts tsunami inundation covers an area of about 15 km2, resulting in more than 150 000 (165 000 in the case of maximum high tide) residents being exposed.
