Abstract

Nuclear data are fundamental quantities for developing nuclear energy concepts and research. They are essential for the simulation of nuclear systems, safety and performance calculations, and reactor instrumentation. Nuclear data improvement requires a combination of many different know-hows that are distributed over many institutions along Europe. In the EURATOM call for Nuclear Fission and Radiation Protection NFRP-2018, two nuclear data projects were started in September 2019: the Coordination and Support Action ARIEL (Accelerator and Research reactor Infrastructures for Education and Learning) and the Research and Innovation Action SANDA (Solving Challenges in Nuclear Data for the Safety of European Nuclear facilities). The ARIEL project integrates education and training of young scientists and technicians with access to neutron beam research infrastructures and supports scientific visits to conduct short-term research projects relevant to thesis works. The SANDA project is focuses on research innovation actions, including detector and nuclear target development, important nuclear data measurements, nuclear data evaluation, and validation. A description of these ongoing projects, including the first results, is the subject of this article.

Abstract

The dipole strength of the $N=28$ closed-shell nuclide $^{54}\mathrm{Fe}$ was studied in photon-scattering experiments using bremsstrahlung produced with electron beams of kinetic energies of 7.5 and 13.9 MeV at the $\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{ELBE}$ facility as well as using quasimonoenergetic and linearly polarized photon beams of 26 different energies within the range from 5.5 to 11.4 MeV at the $\mathrm{HI}\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{S}$ facility. About 100 $J=1$ states were newly identified, out of them 19 with ${1}^{+}$ and 30 with ${1}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ assignments. The quasicontinuum of unresolved transitions was included in the analysis of the spectra and the intensities of branching transitions were estimated on the basis of simulations of statistical $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray cascades. As a result, the photoabsorption cross section up to the neutron-separation energy was determined and compared with predictions of the statistical reaction model. The experimental $M1$ strengths from resolved ${1}^{+}$ states are compared with results of large-scale shell-model calculations.

Abstract

Babiano-Suárez, V., et al., i-TED is an innovative detection system which exploits Compton imaging techniques to achieve a superior signal-to-background ratio in (n, γ) cross-section measurements using time-of-flight technique. This work presents the first experimental validation of the i-TED apparatus for high-resolution time-of-flight experiments and demonstrates for the first time the concept proposed for background rejection. To this aim, the Au(n, γ) and Fe(n, γ) reactions were studied at CERN n_TOF using an i-TED demonstrator based on three position-sensitive detectors. Two CD detectors were also used to benchmark the performance of i-TED. The i-TED prototype built for this study shows a factor of ∼ 3 higher detection sensitivity than state-of-the-art CD detectors in the 10 keV neutron-energy region of astrophysical interest. This paper explores also the perspectives of further enhancement in performance attainable with the final i-TED array consisting of twenty position-sensitive detectors and new analysis methodologies based on Machine-Learning techniques., This work has been carried out in the framework of a project funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (ERC Consolidator Grant project HYMNS, with grant agreement No. 681740). 4. Photo-neutron cross-section of $${}^{{\mathrm {nat}}}{\mathrm {Dy}}$$ in the bremsstrahlung end-point energies of 12, 14, 16, 65, and 75 MeV

Abstract

The flux-weighted average cross-sections of $${}^{\mathrm {nat}}{\mathrm {Dy}}(\upgamma , {\mathrm {xn}}){}^{{159,157,155}}{\mathrm {Dy}}$$ reactions were measured at the bremsstrahlung end-point energies of 12, 14, 16, 65 and 75 MeV with the activation and off-line $$\upgamma $$ -ray spectrometric technique using the 20 MeV Electron Linac for beams with high Brilliance and low Emittance (ELBE) at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf, Dresden, Germany and the 100 MeV electron linac at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory, Korea. The $${}^{\mathrm {nat}}{\mathrm {Dy}}(\upgamma , {\mathrm {xn}}){}^{{157,155}}{\mathrm {Dy}}$$ reaction cross-sections as a function of photon energy were also calculated theoretically using TALYS 1.9 code. Then the flux-weighted average values at different end-point energies were obtained based on the theoretical values of mono-energetic photons. These values were compared with the flux-weighted values of present work and are found to be in general agreement. It was also found that the experimental and theoretical formation cross sections of $${}^{159}{\mathrm {Dy}}$$ , $${}^{157}{\mathrm {Dy}}$$ and $${}^{155}{\mathrm {Dy}}$$ from the $${}^{\mathrm {nat}}{\mathrm {Dy}}(\upgamma , {\mathrm {xn}})$$ reactions increased from their respective threshold values to a certain energy where other reaction channels opened. After reaching a maximum value, the individual reaction cross-sections slowly decreased with the increase of the bremsstrahlung energy due to the initiation of other competing reactions at higher energy, which indicates the impact of the excitation energy. However, the production cross sections of $${}^{157}{\mathrm {Dy}}$$ and $${}^{155}{\mathrm {Dy}}$$ from the $${}^{\mathrm {nat}}{\mathrm {Dy}}(\upgamma , {\mathrm {xn}})$$ reactions slightly increase in between and then decreased slowly with bremsstrahlung energy, which is due to the contributing reactions of higher mass isotopes.

Abstract

Background: The term Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) denotes an accumulation of electric dipole excitations below and around the neutron separation threshold. It may be important, e.g., for the nucleosynthesis of heavy nuclei or the symmetry energy in the Equation of State (EoS). For a deeper understanding of the PDR, systematic studies are essential.Purpose: The tin isotopic chain is a well-suited candidate to investigate the systematics of the PDR, and the ($\ensuremath{\gamma},{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$) reactions on $^{112,116,120,124}\mathrm{Sn}$ have already been measured in experiments using bremsstrahlung. It was claimed that the extracted electric dipole transition strengths of these isotopes increase with increasing neutron-to-proton ratio with the exception of $^{120}\mathrm{Sn}$. Furthermore, previous results from elastic photon scattering experiments on $^{120}\mathrm{Sn}$ are in disagreement with corresponding $(p,{p}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ Coulomb excitation data. To examine this discrepancy an additional high-sensitivity bremsstrahlung experiment on $^{120}\mathrm{Sn}$ was performed.Method: The Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence (NRF) method is used, which is based on the scattering of real photons. The bremsstrahlung experiment presented in this work was performed with a maximum energy of ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma},\mathrm{max}}=9.5\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$ at the $\ensuremath{\gamma}\mathrm{ELBE}$ facility at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). Besides a state-to-state analysis, the quasicontinuum was investigated as well.Results: Above ${E}_{x}=4$ MeV 228 dipole transitions were clearly identified; 163 were observed for the first time. Assuming that all identified dipole transitions have electric dipole character the summed electric dipole strength equals $\ensuremath{\sum}B(E1)\ensuremath{\uparrow}=369(49)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}\phantom{\rule{4pt}{0ex}}{e}^{2}{\text{fm}}^{2}$ [which amounts to 0.58(8)% of the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule] for transitions from 4 MeV to ${S}_{n}=9.1$ MeV. This is an enhancement of a factor 2.3 compared to the previously published $^{120}\mathrm{Sn}(\ensuremath{\gamma},{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ results. This increase can be explained by the contribution of many weak, previously not included transitions in the state-to-state analysis. The photoabsorption cross sections deduced from the quasicontinuum analysis exceed those of the $(p,{p}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ experiment in average by about $50%$ between 5.9 and 8.7 MeV.Conclusion: The newly extracted summed $B(E1)$ value of the state-to-state analysis is larger than those of $^{112,116}\mathrm{Sn}$ and smaller than that of $^{124}\mathrm{Sn}$. The difference between the electric dipole transition strengths deduced from isolated peaks of the present ($\ensuremath{\gamma},{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$) data and those from the inelastic proton scattering experiment above 6.3 MeV is still striking. The analysis of the photoabsorption cross section including the quasicontinuum of levels overcomes this problem and the results are in the order of magnitude of the $(p,{p}^{\ensuremath{'}})$ data and continue the $(\ensuremath{\gamma},n)$ cross sections at the neutron separation threshold.

Abstract

The idea of slow-neutron capture nucleosynthesis formulated in 1957 triggered a tremendous experimental effort in different laboratories worldwide to measure the relevant nuclear physics input quantities, namely (n, γ) cross sections over the stellar temperature range (from few eV up to several hundred keV) for most of the isotopes involved from Fe up to Bi. A brief historical review focused on total energy detectors will be presented to illustrate how advances in instrumentation have led to the assessment of new aspects of s-process nucleosynthesis and to the progressive refinement of stellar models. A summary will be presented on current efforts to develop new detection concepts, such as the Total-Energy Detector with γ-ray imaging capability (i-TED). Abstract

The design and operation of innovative nuclear systems requires a better knowledge of the capture and fission cross sections of the Pu isotopes. For the case of capture on 242Pu, a reduction of the uncertainty in the fast region down to 8-12% is required. Moreover, aiming at improving the evaluation of the fast energy range in terms of average parameters, the OECD NEA High Priority Request List (HPRL) requests high-resolution capture measurements with improved accuracy below 2 keV. The current uncertainties also affect the thermal point, where previous experiments deviate from each other by 20%. A fruitful collaboration betwen JGU Mainz and HZ Dresden-Rossendorf within the EC CHANDA project resulted in a 242Pu sample consisting of a stack of seven fission-like targets making a total of 95(4) mg of 242Pu electrodeposited on thin (11.5 μm) aluminum backings. This contribution presents the results of a set of measurements of the 242Pu(n, γ) cross section from thermal to 500 keV combining different neutron beams and techniques. The thermal point was determined at the Budapest Research Reactor by means of Neutron Activation Analysis and Prompt Gamma Analysis, and the resolved (1 eV - 4 keV) and unresolved (1 - 500 keV) resonance regions were measured using a set of four Total Energy detectors at the CERN n_TOF-EAR1. Abstract

Also, the authors would like to acknowledge the support of the European Commission under the CHANDA project (7th Framework Programme)., Feasibility, design and sensitivity studies on innovative nuclear reactors that could address the issue of nuclear waste transmutation using fuels enriched in minor actinides, require high accuracy cross section data for a variety of neutron-induced reactions from thermal energies to several tens of MeV. The isotope Am-241 (T-1/2= 433 years) is present in high-level nuclear waste (HLW), representing about 1.8 % of the actinide mass in spent PWR UOx fuel. Its importance increases with cooling time due to additional production from the beta-decay of Pu-241 with a half-life of 14.3 years. The production rate of 241Am in conventional reactors, including its further accumulation through the decay of Pu-241 and its destruction through transmutation/incineration are very important parameters for the design of any recycling solution. In the present work, the Am-241(n,f) reaction cross-section was measured using Micromegas detectors at the Experimental Area 2 of the n_TOF facility at CERN. For the measurement, the U-235(n,f) and U-238(n,f) reference reactions were used for the determination of the neutron flux. Abstract

International audience; Since the start of its operation in 2001, based on an idea of Prof. Carlo Rubbia [1], the neutron time of-flight facility of CERN, n_TOF, has become one of the most forefront neutron facilities in the world for wide-energy spectrum neutron cross section measurements. Thanks to the combination of excellent neutron energy resolution and high instantaneous neutron flux available in the two experimental areas, the second of which has been constructed in 2014, n_TOF is providing a wealth of new data on neutron-induced reactions of interest for nuclear astrophysics, advanced nuclear technologies and medical applications. The unique features of the facility will continue to be exploited in the future, to perform challenging new measurements addressing the still open issues and long-standing quests in the field of neutron physics. In this document the main characteristics of the n_TOF facility and their relevance for neutron studies in the different areas of research will be outlined, addressing the possible future contribution of n_TOF in the fields of nuclear astrophysics, nuclear technologies and medical applications. In addition, the future perspectives of the facility will be described including the upgrade of the spallation target, the setup of an imaging installation and the construction of a new irradiation area.

Abstract

New measurements of the7Be(n,α)4He and7Be(n,p)7Li reaction cross sections from thermal to keV neutron energies have been recently performed at CERN/n_TOF. Based on the new experimental results, astrophysical reaction rates have been derived for both reactions, including a proper evaluation of their uncertainties in the thermal energy range of interest for big bang nucleosynthesis studies. The new estimate of the7Be destruction rate, based on these new results, yields a decrease of the predicted cosmological7Li abundance insufficient to provide a viable solution to the cosmological lithium problem.

Abstract

The inelastic scattering of fast neutrons from 7Li nuclei was investigated at the nELBE neutron-time-of-flight facility. The photon production cross section of 478 keV γ-rays from the first excited state of 7Li was determined by irradiating a disc of LiF with neutrons of energies ranging from 100 keV to about 10 MeV. The target position was surounded by a setup of 7 LaBr3 scintillation detectors and 7 high-purity germanium detectors to detect the de-excitation γ-rays. A 235U fission chamber was used to determine the incoming neutron flux. The number of detected photons was corrected for the detection efficiency, multiple scattering and the time-of-flight dependent data acquisition dead time. The preliminary results show reasonable agreement with some previous measurments but are about 15 % below the recent data taken at the GELINA facility.

Abstract

The authors wish to thank the National Center of the INFN for Research and Development in Information and Communication Technologies (CNAF) for their computational support., The neutron-induced fission cross section of U-235, a standard at thermal energy and between 0.15 MeV and 200 MeV, plays a crucial role in nuclear technology applications. The long-standing need of improving cross section data above 20 MeV and the lack of experimental data above 200 MeV motivated a new experimental campaign at the n_TOF facility at CERN. The measurement has been performed in 2018 at the experimental area 1 (EAR1), located at 185 m from the neutron-producing target (the experiment is presented by A. Manna et al. in a contribution to this conference). The U-235(n,f) cross section from 20 MeV up to about 1 GeV has been measured relative to the H-1(n,n)H-1 reaction, which is considered the primary reference in this energy region. The neutron flux impinging on the U-235 sample (a key quantity for determining the fission events) has been obtained by detecting recoil protons originating from n-p scattering in a C2H4 sample. Two Proton Recoil Telescopes (PRT), consisting of several layers of solid-state detectors and fast plastic scintillators, have been located at proton scattering angles of 25.07 degrees and 20.32 degrees, out of the neutron beam. The PRTs exploit the Delta E-E technique for particle identification, a basic requirement for the rejection of charged particles from neutron-induced reactions in carbon. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations were performed to characterize proton transport through the different slabs of silicon and scintillation detectors, to optimize the experimental set-up and to deduce the efficiency of the whole PRT detector. In this work we compare measured data collected with the PRTs with a full Monte Carlo simulation based on the Geant-4 toolkit.

Abstract

The study of neutron-induced reactions on actinides is of considerable importance for the design of advanced nuclear systems and alternative fuel cycles. Specifically, 230Th is produced from the α-decay of 234U as a byproduct of the 232Th/233U fuel cycle, thus the accurate knowledge of its fission cross section is strongly required. However, few experimental datasets exist in literature with large deviations among them, covering the energy range between 0.2 to 25 MeV. In addition, the study of the 230Th(n,f) cross-section is of great interest in the research on the fission process related to the structure of the fission barriers. Previous measurements have revealed a large resonance at En=715 keV and additional fine structures, but with high discrepancies among the cross-section values of these measurements. This contribution presents preliminary results of the 230Th(n,f) cross-section measurements at the CERN n_TOF facility. The high purity targets of the natural, but very rare isotope 230Th, were produced at JRC-Geel in Belgium. The measurements were performed at both experimental areas (EAR-1 and EAR-2) of the n_TOF facility, covering a very broad energy range from thermal up to at least 100 MeV. The experimental setup was based on Micromegas detectors with the 235U(n,f) and 238U(n,f) reaction cross-sections used as reference.

Abstract

Radiative neutron capture cross section measurements are of fundamental importance for the study of the slow neutron capture (s-) process of nucleosynthesis. This mechanism is responsible for the formation of most elements heavier than iron in the Universe. Particularly relevant are branching nuclei along the s-process path, which are sensitive to the physical conditions of the stellar environment. One such example is the branching at 79Se (3.27 × 105 y), which shows a thermally dependent β-decay rate. However, an astrophysically consistent interpretation requires also the knowledge of the closest neighbour isotopes involved. In particular, the 80Se(n,γ) cross section directly affects the stellar yield of the “cold” branch leading to the formation of the s-only 82Kr. Experimentally, there exists only one previous measurement on 80Se using the time of flight (TOF) technique. However, the latter suffers from some limitations that are described in this presentation. These drawbacks have been significantly improved in a recent measurement at CERN n TOF. This contribution presents a summary of the latter measurement and the status of the data analysis.

Abstract

The (n, γ) cross sections of the gadolinium isotopes play an important role in the study of the stellar nucleosynthesis. In particular, among the isotopes heavier than Fe, 154Gd together with 152Gd have the peculiarity to be mainly produced by the slow capture process, the so-called s-process, since they are shielded against the β-decay chains from the r-process region by their stable samarium isobars. Such a quasi pure s-process origin makes them crucial for testing the robustness of stellar models in galactic chemical evolution (GCE). According to recent models, the 154Gd and 152Gd abundances are expected to be 15-20% lower than the reference un-branched s-process 150Sm isotope. The close correlation between stellar abundances and neutron capture cross sections prompted for an accurate measurement of 154Gd cross section in order to reduce the uncertainty attributable to nuclear physics input and eventually rule out one of the possible causes of present discrepancies between observation and model predictions. To this end, the neutron capture cross section of 154Gd was measured in a wide neutron energy range (from thermal up to some keV) with high resolution in the first experimental area of the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF (EAR1) at CERN. In this contribution, after a brief description of the motivation and of the experimental setup used in the measurement, the preliminary results of the 154Gd neutron capture reaction as well as their astrophysical implications are presented.

Abstract

Although the 12C(n,p)12B and 12C(n,d)11B reactions are of interest in several fields of basic and applied Nuclear Physics the present knowledge of these two cross-sections is far from being accurate and reliable, with both evaluations and data showing sizable discrepancies. As part of the challenging n_TOF program on (n,cp) nuclear reactions study, the energy differential cross-sections of the 12C(n,p)12B and 12C(n,d)11 B reactions have been measured at CERN from the reaction thresholds up to 30 MeV neutron energy. Both measurements have been recently performed at the long flight-path (185 m) experimental area of the n_TOF facility at CERN using a pure (99.95%) rigid graphite target and two silicon telescopes. In this paper an overview of the experiment is presented together with a few preliminary results.

Abstract

The fast-neutron-induced fission cross section of $^{242}\mathrm{Pu}$ was measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility $n$ELBE. A parallel-plate fission ionization chamber with novel, homogeneous, large-area $^{242}\mathrm{Pu}$ deposits on Si-wafer backings was used to determine this quantity relative to the IAEA neutron cross-section standard $^{235}\mathrm{U}(n,f)$ in the energy range of 0.5 to 10 MeV. The number of target nuclei was determined from the measured spontaneous fission rate of $^{242}\mathrm{Pu}$. This helps to reduce the influence of the fission fragment detection efficiency on the cross section. Neutron transport simulations performed with geant4, mcnp6, and fluka2011 are used to correct the cross-section data for neutron scattering. In the reported energy range the systematic uncertainty is below 2.7% and on average the statistical uncertainty is 4.9%. The determined results show an agreement within 0.67(16)% to recently published data and a good accordance to current evaluated data sets.

Abstract

New measurements of the neutron scattering double differential cross section of iron were carried out at the neutron time-of-flight facilities GELINA and nELBE. A neutron spectrometer consisting of an array of up to 32 liquid organic scintillators was employed, which was designed to measure the scattering differential cross section at eight scattering angles and to simultaneously determine the integral cross section via numerical quadrature. The separation of elastic from inelastic scattering was achieved by analyzing the time-of-flight-dependent light-output distributions to determine the scattered neutron energy. The method was validated by studying elastic scattering on carbon and it was proved to work well for the determination of the elastic cross section. Here, the possibility to extend it to inelastic scattering was investigated too. For these experiments a sample of natural iron was used and the results cover the incident neutron energy range from 2 to 6 MeV. Both the differential and the integral elastic cross sections were produced for $^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Fe}$, while for inelastic scattering, partial angular distributions for scattering from the first excited level of $^{56}\mathrm{Fe}$ could be determined.

Abstract

The measurement of neutron induced reactions on unstable isotopes is of interest in many fields, from nuclear energy to astrophysics or applications; in particular transuranic isotopes are essential for the development of innovative nuclear reactors and for the management of the radioactive waste. In such measurements, the quality of the associated radioactive target is crucial for the success of the experiment, but in many cases the geometry, amount of mass and encapsulation of the target are not optimal, leading to limited results. In this work we propose to produce high quality radioactive targets for capture as a stack of thin targets using the techniques usually employed for fission measurements. In particular, we have succeeded in making a 242Pu target of nearly 100 mg by combining seven thin (1 mg/cm2) fission-like targets with 45 mm in diameter achieving a total backing thickness of only of aluminum. The target has been shown to perform successfully in experiments at both a neutron time-of-flight facility (n_TOF at CERN) and a thermal neutron beam (BRR at KFKI), providing the most accurate data from thermal up to 500 keV to date., This measurement has received funding from the EC FP7 Programme under the projects NEUTANDALUS (Grant No. 334315) and CHANDA (Grant No. 605203), the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness projects FPA2014-53290-C2-2-P and FPA2016-77689-C2-1-R and the V Plan Propio de Investigación from the University of Seville .

Abstract

Since its start in 2001 the n_TOF collaboration developed a measurement program on fission, in view of advanced fuels in new generation reactors. A special effort was made on measurement of cross sections of actinides, exploiting the peculiarity of the n_TOF neutron beam which spans a huge energy domain, from the thermal region up to GeV. Moreover fission fragment angular distributions have also been measured. An overview of the cross section results achieved with different detectors is presented, including a discussion of the 237Np case where discrepancies showed up between different detector systems. The results on the anisotropy of the fission fragments and its implication on the mechanism of neutron absorption, and in applications, are also shown.

Abstract

A good knowledge of the radiative capture cross section of 242Pu is required for innovative nuclear reactor studies, especially for MoX fuel reactors. However, the experimental data available show discrepancies in the energy regions of interest: the thermal point and the keV region. Previous experimental results of the thermal cross section deviate from each other by 20% and these discrepancies are reflected also in the evaluated libraries, each of them giving more credit to different data sets. A recent measurement by Genreith et al. did not succeed to solve the existing discrepancy due to the large uncertainties and correction factors in the analysis. This work presents a new measurement of the thermal capture cross section of 242Pu carried out in the Budapest Research Reactor using the same thin targets of a previous measurement at n_TOF-EAR1, each containing 30mg of 99.995% pure 242Pu . The combined analysis of the full prompt γ -ray spectrum and the 243Pu decay has led to three compatible values for the thermal cross section. Their average value, 18.9(9)b, has an improved accuracy compared to recent measurements. Leaving aside the activation value of Genreith using an outdated intensity value for the 84 keV decay line of 243Pu , our average result is in very good agreement with the JEFF-3.2 evaluation and all the previous measurements, with the exception of the highest value 22.5(11)b reported by Marie et al., which has a strong influence in the ENDF evaluation., This measurement has received funding from the EC FP7 Programme under the projects NEUTANDALUS (Grant No. 334315) and the Transnational Access Activities Programme of CHANDA (Grant No. 605203), the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness projects FPA2014-53290-C2-2-P and FPA2016-77689-C2-1-R and the V Plan Propio de Investigación Programme from the University of Sevilla. Abstract

The dipole strength distribution of $^{206}\mathrm{Pb}$ was investigated via a nuclear resonance fluorescence experiment using bremsstrahlung produced with an electron beam at a kinetic energy of 10.5 MeV at the linear accelerator ELBE. We identified 88 states resonantly excited at energies from 3.7 to 8.2 MeV. The analysis of the measured $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectra includes the quasicontinuum of levels at high energy. Monte Carlo simulation of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray cascades were performed to obtain the intensities of inelastic transitions and branching ratios of the ground-state transitions. The extracted photoabsorption cross section shows enhanced dipole strength at the excitation energies around 5.5 and 7 MeV, which may related to a pygmy dipole resonance. The present $(\ensuremath{\gamma},\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{'})$ data combined with $(\ensuremath{\gamma},n)$ data from the literature were used for confining input parameters of the statistical calculation code CCONE to derive the neutron-capture cross section of the unstable $^{205}\mathrm{Pb}$ nucleus.

Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections are one of the fundamental nuclear data in the study of the s (slow) process of nucleosynthesis. More interestingly, the competition between the capture and the decay rates in some unstable nuclei determines the local isotopic abundance pattern. Since decay rates are often sensible to temperature and electron density, the study of the nuclear properties of these nuclei can provide valuable constraints to the physical magnitudes of the nucleosynthesis stellar environment. Here we report on the capture cross section measurement of two thallium isotopes, 204Tl and 205Tl performed by the time-of-flight technique at the n TOF facility at CERN. At some particular stellar s-process environments, the decay of both nuclei is strongly enhanced, and determines decisively the abundance of two s-only isotopes of lead, 204Pb and 205Pb. The latter, as a long-lived radioactive nucleus, has potential use as a chronometer of the last s-process events that contributed to final solar isotopic abundances.

Abstract

The neutron induced fission of 235U is extensively used as a reference for neutron fluence measurements in various applications, ranging from the investigation of the biological effectiveness of high energy neutrons, to the measurement of high energy neutron cross sections of relevance for accelerator driven nuclear systems. Despite its widespread use, no data exist on neutron induced fission of 235U above 200 MeV. The neutron facility n_TOF offers the possibility to improve the situation. The measurement of 235U(n,f) relative to the differential n-p scattering cross-section, was carried out in September 2018 with the aim of providing accurate and precise cross section data in the energy range from 10 MeV up to 1 GeV. In such measurements, Recoil Proton Telescopes (RPTs) are used to measure the neutron flux while the fission events are detected and counted with dedicated detectors. In this paper the measurement campaign and the experimental set-up are illustrated.

Abstract

The field of nuclear astrophysics is devoted to the study of the creation of the chemical elements. By nature, it is deeply intertwined with the physics of the Sun. The nuclear reactions of the proton-proton cycle of hydrogen burning, including the 3He({\alpha},{\gamma})7Be reaction, provide the necessary nuclear energy to prevent the gravitational collapse of the Sun and give rise to the by now well-studied pp, 7Be, and 8B solar neutrinos. The not yet measured flux of 13N, 15O, and 17F neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycle is affected in rate by the 14N(p,{\gamma})15O reaction and in emission profile by the 12C(p,{\gamma})13N reaction. The nucleosynthetic output of the subsequent phase in stellar evolution, helium burning, is controlled by the 12C({\alpha},{\gamma})16O reaction. In order to properly interpret the existing and upcoming solar neutrino data, precise nuclear physics information is needed. For nuclear reactions between light, stable nuclei, the best available technique are experiments with small ion accelerators in underground, low-background settings. The pioneering work in this regard has been done by the LUNA collaboration at Gran Sasso/Italy, using a 0.4 MV accelerator. The present contribution reports on a higher-energy, 5.0 MV, underground accelerator in the Felsenkeller underground site in Dresden/Germany. Results from {\gamma}-ray, neutron, and muon background measurements in the Felsenkeller underground site in Dresden, Germany, show that the background conditions are satisfactory for nuclear astrophysics purposes. The accelerator is in the commissioning phase and will provide intense, up to 50{\mu}A, beams of 1H+, 4He+ , and 12C+ ions, enabling research on astrophysically relevant nuclear reactions with unprecedented sensitivity., Comment: Submitted to the Proceedings of the 5th International Solar Neutrino Conference, Dresden/Germany, 11-14 June 2018, to appear on World Scientific -- updated version (Figure 2 and relevant discussion updated, co-author A. Abstract

The accurate calculations of neutron-induced reaction cross sections are relevant for many nuclear applications. The photon strength functions and nuclear level densities are essential inputs for such calculations. These quantities for 235U are studied using the measurement of the gamma de-excitation cascades in radiative capture on 234U with the Total Absorption Calorimeter at n_TOF at CERN. This segmented 4π gamma calorimeter is designed to detect gamma rays emitted from the nucleus with high efficiency. This experiment provides information on gamma multiplicity and gamma spectra that can be compared with numerical simulations. The code diceboxc is used to simulate the gamma cascades while geant4 is used for the simulation of the interaction of these gammas with the TAC materials. Available models and their parameters are being tested using the present data. Some preliminary results of this ongoing study are presented and discussed.

Abstract

Neutron total cross sections of natFe, 197Au and natW have been measured at the n ELBE neutron time-of-flight facility in the energy range 0.15-8MeV with an uncertainty due to counting statistics of up to 2% and a total uncertainty due to systematic effects of 1%. The neutrons are produced with the superconducting electron accelerator ELBE using a liquid lead circuit as photo-neutron target. By periodical sample-in-sample-out measurements the transmission of the sample materials has been determined using a low-threshold plastic scintillation detector. The resulting effective total cross sections show good agreement with previously measured data that cover only part of the energy range available at n ELBE. The results have also been compared to evaluated library files and recent calculations based on a dispersive coupled channel optical model potential.

Abstract

The angular distribution of $ \gamma$ -rays emitted after inelastic scattering of fast neutrons from iron was determined at the n ELBE neutron time-of-flight facility. An iron sample of natural isotopic composition was irradiated by a continuous photo-neutron spectrum in the energy range from about 0.1 up to 10 MeV. The de-excitation $\gamma$ -rays of the four lowest excited states of 56Fe and the first excited state of 54Fe were detected using a setup of five high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors and five LaBr3 scintillation detectors positioned around the sample at $ 30^\circ$ , $55^{\circ}$ , $90^{\circ}$ , $ 125^{\circ}$ and $150^{\circ}$ with respect to the incoming neutron beam. The resulting angular distributions were fitted by Legendre polynomials up to 4th order and the angular distribution coefficients $a_{2}$ and $ a_{4}$ were extracted. The angular distribution coefficients of three transitions in 56Fe are reported here for the first time. The results are applied to a previous measurement of the inelastic scattering cross section determined using a single HPGe detector positioned at $125^{\circ}$ . Using the updated $\gamma$ -ray angular distribution, the previous cross section results are in good agreement with reference data.

Abstract

The spent fuel of current nuclear reactors contains fissile plutonium isotopes that can be combined with uranium to make mixed oxide (MOX) fuel. In this way the Pu from spent fuel is used in a new reactor cycle, contributing to the long-term sustainability of nuclear energy. However, an extensive use of MOX fuels, in particular in fast reactors, requires more accurate capture and fission cross sections for some Pu isotopes. In the case of Pu242 there are sizable discrepancies among the existing capture cross-section measurements included in the evaluations (all from the 1970s) resulting in an uncertainty as high as 35% in the fast energy region. Moreover, postirradiation experiments evaluated with JEFF-3.1 indicate an overestimation of 14% in the capture cross section in the fast neutron energy region. In this context, the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) requested an accuracy of 8% in this cross section in the energy region between 500 meV and 500 keV. This paper presents a new time-of-flight capture measurement on Pu242 carried out at n-TOF-EAR1 (CERN), focusing on the analysis and statistical properties of the resonance region, below 4 keV. The Pu242(n,γ) reaction on a sample containing 95(4) mg enriched to 99.959% was measured with an array of four C6D6 detectors and applying the total energy detection technique. The high neutron energy resolution of n-TOF-EAR1 and the good statistics accumulated have allowed us to extend the resonance analysis up to 4 keV, obtaining new individual and average resonance parameters from a capture cross section featuring a systematic uncertainty of 5%, fulfilling the request of the NEA.

Abstract

The effect of temperature changes on the light output of LAB based liquid scintillator is investigated in a range from $$-5$$ to $$30\,^{\circ }$$ C with $$\alpha $$ -particles and electrons in a small scale setup. Two PMTs observe the scintillator liquid inside a cylindrically shaped aluminum cuvette that is heated or cooled and the temperature dependent PMT sensitivity is monitored and corrected. The $$\alpha $$ -emitting isotopes in dissolved radon gas and in natural Samarium (bound to a LAB solution) excite the liquid scintillator mixtures and changes in light output with temperature variation are observed by fitting light output spectra. Furthermore, also changes in light output by compton electrons, which are generated from external calibration $$\gamma $$ -ray sources, is analysed with varying temperature. Assuming a linear behaviour, a combined negative temperature coefficient of $${(-0.29 \pm 0.01)}{\,\%/^{\circ }}\hbox {C}$$ is found. Considering hints for a particle type dependency, electrons show $${(-0.17 \pm 0.02)}{\,\%/^{\circ }}\hbox {C}$$ , whereas the temperature dependency seems stronger for $$\alpha $$ -particles, with $${(-0.35 \pm 0.03)}{\,\%/^{\circ }}\hbox {C}$$ . Due to a high sampling rate, a pulse shape analysis can be performed and shows an enhanced slow decay component at lower temperatures, pointing to reduced non-radiative triplet state de-excitations.

Abstract

Low-background experiments with stable ion beams are an important tool for putting the model of stellar hydrogen, helium, and carbon burning on a solid experimental foundation. The pioneering work in this regard has been done by the LUNA collaboration at Gran Sasso, using a 0.4 MV accelerator. The present contribution reviews the status of the project for a higher-energy underground accelerator in Felsenkeller, Germany. Results from γ-ray, neutron, and muon background measurements in the Felsenkeller underground site in Dresden, Germany, show that the background conditions are satisfactory. Two tunnels of the Felsenkeller site have recently been refurbished for the installation of a 5MV high-current Pelletron accelerator. Civil construction work has completed in March 2018. The accelerator will provide intense, 50 μA, beams of 1H+, 4He+, and 12C+ ions, enabling research on astrophysically relevant nuclear reactions with unprecedented sensitivity.

Abstract

The prompt γ-ray spectrum of fission fragments is important in understanding the dynamics of the fission process, as well as for nuclear engineering in terms of predicting the γ-ray heating in nuclear reactors. The γ-ray spectrum measured from the fission fragments of the spontaneous fission of 242Pu will be presented here. A fission chamber containing in total 37mg of 242Pu was used as active sample. The γ-quanta were detected with high time- and energy-resolution using LaBr3 and HPGe detectors, respectively, in coincidence with spontaneous fission events detected by the fission chamber. The acquired γ-ray spectra were corrected for the detector response using the spectrum stripping method. About 70 million fission events were detected which results in a very low statistical uncertainty and a wider energy range covered compared to previous measurements. The prompt fission γ-ray spectrum measured with the HPGe detectors shows structures that allow conclusions about the nature of γ-ray transitions in the fission fragments. The average photon multiplicity of 8.2 and the average total energy release by prompt photons per fission event of about 6.8 MeV were determined for both detector types.

Abstract

An increasing number of experimental data indicates the breaking of axial symmetry in many heavy nuclei already in the valley of stability: Multiple Coulomb excitation analysed in a rotation invariant way, gamma transition rates and energies in odd nuclei, mass predictions, the splitting of Giant Resonances (GR), the collective enhancement of nuclear level densities and Maxwellian averaged neutron capture cross sections. For the interpretation of these experimental observations the axial symmetry breaking shows up in nearly all heavy nuclei as predicted by Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) calculations [1] ; this indicates a nuclear Jahn-Teller effect. We show that nearly no parameters remain free to be adjusted by separate fitting to level density or giant resonance data, if advance information on nuclear deformations, radii etc. are taken from such calculations with the force parameters already fixed. Abstract

To improve the properties and performance of thin layers produced by molecular plating as targets for nuclear experiments investigations with lanthanide elements (i.e., natural Nd and 147Sm-enriched Sm) were carried out. Plating parameters like roughness of the deposition substrate, plating solvent, electrolyte concentration, and applied current density were varied. The influence of each parameter on the properties of the layers was studied by characterizing the deposits. The characterizations showed that nuclear targets perform differently depending on their layer properties. The results obtained from the investigations were applied for the quantitative preparation of homogeneous large-area (i.e., 42 cm2) 242Pu targets to be used for transmutation-relevant experiments.

Cross sections for neutron capture in the range of unresolved resonances and average level distances near the neutron emission threshold are simultaneously predicted for more than 140 spin-0 target nuclei with A >50. In nearly all these nuclei a combined description of photon strength, level density and Maxwellian averaged radiative neutron capture is presented, which only needs very few fit parameters, which are global for the full range in A. To reach that it is essential that the requirements of spherical or axial symmetry are given up.

Abstract

A new measurement of the angular distribution of neutron elastic scattering on deuterium was carried out at the neutron time-of-flight facility nELBE. The backward-forward asymmetry of the reaction was investigated via the direct detection of neutrons scattered at the laboratory angle of ${15}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ and ${165}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ from a polyethylene sample enriched with deuterium. In order to extend the measurement to neutron energies below 1 MeV, $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ glass scintillators were employed. The data were corrected for the background and the multiple scattering in the target, the events due to scattering on deuterium were separated from those due to carbon, and the ratio of the differential cross section at ${15}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ and ${165}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ was determined. The results, covering the energy range from 200 keV to 2 MeV, were found to be in agreement with the theoretical predictions calculated by Canton et al. [Eur. Phys. J. A 14, 225 (2002)] and by Golak et al. [Eur. Phys. J. A 50, 177 (2014)]. The comparison with the evaluated nuclear data libraries indicated CENDL-3.1, JEFF-3.2, and JENDL-4.0 as the evaluations that best describe the asymmetry of $n\text{\ensuremath{-}}d$ scattering. ENDF/B-VII.1 is compatible with the data for energies below 700 keV, but above the backward to forward ratio is higher than measured. ROSFOND-2010 and BROND-2.2 resulted to have little compatibility with the data.

Abstract

The fast neutron-induced fission cross section of 242 Pu was determined in the range of 0.5 MeV to 10 MeV relative to 235 U(n,f) at the neutron time-of-flight facility n ELBE. The number of target nuclei was calculated by means of measuring the spontaneous fission rate of 242 Pu. Neutron transport simulations with Geant4 and MCNP6 are used to correct the relative cross section for neutron scattering. The determined results are in good agreement with current experimental and evaluated data sets.

Abstract

The spent fuel of current nuclear reactors contains fissile plutonium isotopes that can be combined with 238U to make mixed oxide (MOX) fuel. In this way the Pu from spent fuel is used in a new reactor cycle, contributing to the long-term sustainability of nuclear energy. The use of MOX fuels in thermal and fast reactors requires accurate capture and fission cross sections. For the particular case of 242Pu, the previous neutron capture cross section measurements were made in the 70’s, providing an uncertainty of about 35% in the keV region. In this context, the Nuclear Energy Agency recommends in its “High Priority Request List” and its report WPEC-26 that the capture cross section of 242Pu should be measured with an accuracy of at least 7–12% in the neutron energy range between 500 eV and 500 keV. This work presents a brief description of the measurement performed at n TOF-EAR1, the data reduction process and the first ToF capture measurement on this isotope in the last 40 years, providing preliminary individual resonance parameters beyond the current energy limits in the evaluations, as well as a preliminary set of average resonance parameters., This measurement has received funding from the EC FP7 Programme under the projects NEUTANDALUS (Grant No. 334315) and CHANDA (Grant No. 605203), and the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness projects FPA2013- 45083-P and FPA2014-53290-C2-2-P.

Abstract

The basic parameters for calculations of radiative neutron capture , photon strength functions and nuclear level densities near the neutron separation energy are determined based on experimental data without an ad-hoc assumption about axial symmetry - at variance to previous analysis. Surprisingly few global fit parameters are needed in addition to information on nuclear deformation, taken from Hartree Fock Bogolyubov (HFB) calculations with the Gogny force, and the generator coordinator method (GCM) assures properly defined angular momentum. For a large number of nuclei the GDR shapes and the photon strength are described by the sum of three Lorentzians (TLO), extrapolated to low energies and normalized in accordance to the dipole sum rule. Level densities are influenced strongly by the significant collective enhancement based on the breaking of shape symmetry. The replacement of axial symmetry by the less stringent requirement of invariance against rotation by 180 degree leads to a novel prediction for radiative neutron capture. It compares well to recent compilations of average radiative widths and Maxwellian average cross sections for neutron capture by even target nuclei. An extension to higher spin promises a reliable prediction for various compound nuclear reactions also outside the valley of stability. Such predictions are of high importance for future nuclear energy systems and waste transmutation as well as for the understanding of the cosmic synthesis of heavy elements., Comment: Pacs. Abstract

Inelastic scattering of fast neutrons from 56Fe was studied at the photoneutron source nELBE. The neutron energies were determined on the basis of a time-of-flight measurement. Gamma-ray spectra were measured with a high-purity germanium detector. The inelastic scattering cross sections deduced from the present experiment in an energy range from 0.8 to 9.6 MeV agree within 15% with earlier data and with predictions of the statistical-reaction code Talys. In addition to the γ-ray production cross sections, level cross sections for the 2 + , 4 + and 6 + yrast states in 56Fe were deduced.

Abstract

Neutron elastic scattering measurements were carried out at the nELBE neutron time-of-flight facility at a 6 m flight path. Energies below 2 MeV were studied using a setup consisting of eight 6Li-glass detectors placed at nominal angles of 15∘ and 165∘ with respect to the incident neutron beam. A deuterated polyethylene sample with 99.999% enrichment in deuterium was used. These angles were chosen since an earlier study showed that the ratio of the differential cross section at these angles is the most sensitive to differences in evaluated files and model calculations. Accurate 165∘/15∘ angle ratios were obtained. Above 1 MeV these are somewhat larger than given by ENDF/B-VII. Simultaneously the early day experiments using a proportional counter to infer angular distributions from deuterium recoil pulse height distributions are being studied through a new experiment with such a device at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB). At 500 keV this experiment favors ENDF/B-VII over JENDL-4.0, while at lower energies agreement with the data is similar.

Abstract

The photo-neutron cross-sections of 93Nb at the end-point bremsstrahlung energies of 12, 14 and 16 MeV as well as 45, 50, 55, 60 and 70 MeV have been determined by the activation and the off-line γ-ray spectrometric techniques using the 20 MeV electron linac (ELBE) at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Dresden, Germany, and 100 MeV electron linac at Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL), Pohang, Korea. The 93Nb(γ, xn, x = 1 – 4 ) reaction cross-sections as a function of photon energy were also calculated using computer code TALYS 1.4. The flux-weighted average values were obtained from the experimental and the theoretical (TALYS) values based on mono-energetic photons. The experimental values of present work are in good agreement with the flux-weighted theoretical values of TALYS 1.4 but are slightly higher than the flux-weighted experimental data of mono-energetic photons. It was also found that the theoretical and the experimental values of present work and literature data for the 93Nb(γ, xn) reaction cross-sections increase from the threshold values to a certain energy, where other reaction channels opens. However, the increase of 93Nb(γ, n) and 93Nb(γ, 2n) reaction cross-sections are sharper compared to 93Nb(γ, 3n) and 93Nb(γ, 4n) reaction cross-sections. The sharp increase of 93Nb(γ, n) and 93Nb(γ, 2n) reaction cross-sections from the threshold value up to 17–22 MeV is due to the Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) effect besides the role of excitation energy. After a certain values, the individual 93Nb(γ, xn) reaction cross-sections decrease with increase of bremsstrahlung energy due to opening of other reaction channels.

Abstract

The neutron time-of-flight setup nELBE at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf uses an intense electron beam impinging on a liquid-lead target to produce neutrons in the energy range from about 10 keV to 10 MeV. This neutron source will be used to measure fast-neutron induced reactions with relevance for future nuclear transmutation facilities and nuclear waste management. The spatial profile, the intensity, the energy distribution and the time structure of the nELBE neutron beam have been investigated and the techniques how they were measured are explained in this work.

Abstract

The relative light yields of NE-213 and linear alkyl benzene (LAB) based liquid scintillators from electrons were determined in the electron energy range 13–1600 keV using a combination of monoenergetic γ sources and a Compton spectrometer. The light yield was found to be proportional to energy for both types of scintillator and expected deviations below 100 keV were described successfully applying Birks’ law. A description of the Cherenkov light contribution to the total light yield was achieved for both detectors and is in agreement with the electromagnetic theory of fast particles in matter. Digital pulse-shape discrimination in a mixed n– γ field from a 252Cf source was investigated for LAB+PPO and LAB+PPO+bis-MSB and compared to NE-213. In combination with these two solutes, LAB shows poorer abilities to separate neutron-induced pulses from γ -induced ones.
