Acidophiles comprise a group of microorganisms adapted to live in acidic environments. Despite acidophiles are usually associated with an autotrophic metabolism, more than 80 microorganisms capable of utilizing organic matter have been isolated from natural and man-made environments. The ability to reduce soluble and insoluble iron compounds has been described for many of these species and may be harnessed to develop new or improved mining processes when oxidative bioleaching is ineffective. Similarly, as these microorganisms grow in highly acidic media and the chances of contamination are reduced by the low pH, they may be employed to implement robust fermentation processes. By conducting an extensive literature review, this work presents an updated view of basic aspects and technological applications in biomining, bioremediation, fermentation processes aimed at biopolymers production, microbial electrochemical systems, and the potential use of extremozymes. Nanobubble technology has emerged as a transformative approach in bioprocessing, significantly enhancing mass-transfer efficiency for effective microbial activity. Characterized by their nanometric size and high internal pressure, nanobubbles possess distinct properties such as prolonged stability and minimal rise velocities, allowing them to remain suspended in liquid media for extended periods. These features are particularly beneficial in bioprocesses involving aerobic strains, where they help overcome common obstacles, such as increased culture viscosity and diffusion limitations, that traditionally impede efficient mass transfer. For instance, in an experimental setup, nanobubble aeration achieved 10% higher soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) removal compared to traditional aeration methods. Additionally, nanobubble-aerated systems demonstrated a 55.03% increase in caproic acid concentration when supplemented with air nanobubble water, reaching up to 15.10 g/L. These results underscore the potential of nanobubble technology for optimizing bioprocess efficiency and sustainability. This review delineates the important role of the mass-transfer coefficient (kL) in evaluating these interactions and underscores the significance of nanobubbles in improving bioprocess efficiency. The integration of nanobubble technology in bioprocessing not only improves gas exchange and substrate utilization but also bolsters microbial growth and metabolic performance. The potential of nanobubble technology to improve the mass-transfer efficiency in biotechnological applications is supported by emerging research. However, to fully leverage these benefits, it is essential to conduct further empirical studies to specifically assess their impacts on bioprocess efficacy and scalability. Such research will provide the necessary data to validate the practical applications of nanobubbles and identify any limitations that need to be addressed in industrial settings. This study evaluates the techno-economic and environmental feasibility of a small-scale biorefinery in Chile's La Araucanía Region, which utilizes wheat straw as feedstock to produce butyric acid using Clostridium tyrobutyricum. Two scenarios were considered; the standalone wheat straw biorefinery and its integration with the anaerobic digestion of pig manure for biogas production, coupled with a cogeneration system, using the xylo-oligosaccharides and lignin obtained in the pretreatment. The simulations were carried out using Aspen Plus, while the Aspen Process Economic Analyzer was used to perform the economic evaluation. The simulation results were validated with experimental data from the literature. An economic assessment was performed considering the different processes involved. A cradle-to-gate life-cycle analysis (LCA) was also applied to evaluate the different environmental impacts. Both studied scenarios were economically feasible, with the highest butyric acid production cost being USD 2.97/kgbutyricacid; however, this value is still higher compared to corn-based biorefineries. Annexed biogas production increased the costs and was less economically attractive. Nonetheless, the integrations with biogas production had lower environmental impacts, except in the photochemical oxidant formation category, which was higher because of the combustion gases obtained by the cogeneration system. The effect of nitrogen and phosphorus availability on the growth of Sulfolobus metallicus was analyzed. This archaeon was subjected to a series of nitrogen and phosphorus limitation conditions to determine their effects on growth. The results indicate that Sulfolobus metallicus showed a relationship between one of the intermediate oxidation products (tetrathionate) and cell concentration during the exponential growth phase in the absence of nitrogen. Furthermore, significant differences were found in the specific growth rates under different scenarios with ammonia and phosphorus limitation, with values of 0.048 h−1 in the ammonia limitation case. The biomass substrate yield obtained was 0.107 gcel·g S−1. Meanwhile, in the absence of phosphorus, the specific growth rate was 0.017 h−1, and the substrate to biomass yield was 0.072 gcel·g S−1. The results indicate that the ability of Sulfolobus metallicus to bio-oxidize H2S depends on the availability of such nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), which affect cellular growth and the types of products generated. This, in turn, influences the oxidation process of various sulfur compounds, resulting in changes in the predominant products formed and the final oxidation of sulfate ions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND Butanol is a versatile chemical that can be used as fuel, solvent or intermediate in chemical synthesis. Several strategies have been used to increase the availability of reducing power in Clostridium sp. with the aim of maximizing the production of butanol, the use of electron carriers being one of the most effective. Moreover, electrons from an external power source can be transferred to cells through electron carriers such neutral red, or directly reducing NAD+. From a previous metabolic analysis, we hypothesized that adding butyrate to the culture medium and using an external electron source as a co‐reducing agent, along with glucose‐derived reducing power (electro‐fermentation), would result in an increase in the specific butanol productivity. RESULTS: Butyrate caused a decrease in the maximum concentration of butanol reached at the concentration used (6 g L−1). The supplementation of neutral red to the culture medium by itself and along with electro‐fermentation were effective in stimulating the production of butanol. The mean specific rate of butanol production obtained for electro‐fermentation in medium supplemented with butyrate and neutral red was 307% and 156% higher than that recorded using medium supplemented with butyrate, or butyrate and neutral red, respectively, this value being even 113% higher than that recorded for the non‐supplemented medium. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of butyrate and absence of neutral red in the electro‐fermentation were detrimental for the microorganism. The electro‐fermentation in medium supplemented with neutral red led to an increase in both volumetric and specific productivities of butanol. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI). BACKGROUND Alkylpyrazines are odorous compounds conferring pleasant aromas to baked and roasted foods. However, they are also emitted during food processing, creating a nuisance for the operators and the community. Only a few bacterial isolates have been shown to degrade 2,5‐methylpyrazine (DMP), as a model alkylpyrazine. This work aimed to study the ability of DMP biodegradation by the filamentous fungus Fusarium solani. RESULTS: Evidence of the degradation of DMP was collected in axenic cultures of F. solani in liquid mineral medium and over a saturated solid support using DMP as the sole carbon and energy source. DMP was used for growth as evidenced by the formation of an abundant aerial mycelium over a solid support, accompanied by the production of 70 ppm CO2 mg−1 dry biomass, and by its consumption in liquid media at a rate of 58.3 mg g−1 biomass h−1, a value comparable to those reported for bacteria. A non‐axenic biofilter was mounted, fed with a DMP‐laden air stream, and operated for 40 days. The maximum DMP elimination capacity achieved was 8.5 g m−3 h−1 at an inlet load of 11.3 g m−3 h−1 (an 80% relative efficiency). CONCLUSION: Fusarium solani uses DMP as a carbon source, showing great potential for its abatement in a biofilter. High‐throughput DNA sequencing of biofilter samples showed that it was the most representative member of the community, with a relative abundance surpassing 97%, indicating that it played a pivotal role in the biofilter. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).
