Search

Electronic correlations lead to heavy quasiparticles in three-dimensional metals, and their collapse can destabilize magnetic moments. It is an open question whether there is an analogous instability in one-dimensional (1D) systems, unanswered due to the lack of metallic spin chains. We report neutron scattering measurements and Density Matrix Renormalization Group calculations establishing spinons in the correlated metal Ti4MnBi2, confirming it is 1D. Ti4MnBi2 is inherently frustrated, forming near a quantum critical point separating two T = 0 phases of the J1-J2 XXZ model. The lack of magnetic order above 0.3 K results from these quantum critical fluctuations, potentially compounded by Kondo moment compensation. Ti4MnBi2 provides the first experimental evidence that 1D magnetism, previously the exclusive domain of insulators, persists in metallic systems with moderate correlations., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We report measurements of magnetization, specific heat, and thermal expansion performed on As-deficient MnAs single crystals (MnAs$_{0.968}$). Ferromagnetic order is observed near $T_C \simeq$ 306 K on warming and $T_C \simeq$ 302 K on cooling, which is consistent with previously-reported values for stoichiometric MnAs samples. In contrast, the second-order structural phase transition is observed at $T_S \simeq$ 353 K, which is nearly 50 K lower than in the stoichiometric compound. We observe differences in the thermal expansion of our samples when compared to reports of stoichiometric MnAs including: (1) the $\sim$1.5% volume decrease at $T_C$ is smaller than the expected value of 1.9%, (2) the lattice parameters perpendicular to the basal plane exhibit a discontinuous jump of $\sim$1.1% at $T_C$ instead of being continuous across $T_C$, and (3) thermal expansion perpendicular to the basal plane for $T_C \le T \le$ 315 K is negative rather than positive. We also observe a correlation between the ratio of hexagonal lattice parameters, $c/a$, and $T_S$, strongly suggesting that the degree of structural anisotropy in MnAs could play an important role in tuning $T_S$.

In the past two decades, various classes of topological materials have been discovered, spanning topological insulators, semimetals, and metals. While the observation and understanding of the topology of a material has been a primary focus so far, the precise and easy control of topology in a single material remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate full experimental control over the topological Dirac nodal loop in the square-net material LaSb$_\mathrm{x}$Te$_\mathrm{2-x}$ by chemical substitution and electron doping. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we show that changing the antimony concentration x from 0.9 to 1.0 in the bulk opens a gap as large as 400 meV in the nodal loop. Our symmetry analysis based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction and a minimal tight binding model establishes that the breaking of \textit{n} glide symmetry in the square-net layer is responsible for the opening of the gap. Remarkably, we can also realize this topological phase transition \textit{in situ} on the surface of LaSb$_\mathrm{x}$Te$_\mathrm{2-x}$ by chemical gating using potassium deposition, which enables the reversible switching of the topology from gapped to gapless nodal loop. The underlying control parameter for the structural and topological transition in the bulk and on the surface is the electron concentration. It opens a pathway towards applications in devices based on switching topology by electrostatic gating.

CaSb$_2$ is a bulk superconductor and a topological semimetal, making it a great platform for realizing topological superconductivity. In this work, we investigate the superconducting upper and lower critical field anisotropy using magnetic susceptibility, and study the superconducting state using muon spin-relaxation. The temperature dependence of transverse-field relaxation rate can be fitted with a single-gap model or two-gap model. Zero-field relaxation shows little temperature dependence when the muon-spin is parallel to the $c*$-axis, while an increase in relaxation appears below 1 K when the muon-spin is parallel to the $ab$-plane. We conclude an $s+is$ order parameter considering the breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS), which originates from competing interband interactions between the three bands of CaSb$_2$. To explain the direction-dependent breaking of TRS we suggest loop currents developing in the plane of distorted square-net of Sb atoms.

Bulk superconductivity in a topological semimetal is a first step towards realizing topological superconductors, which can host Majorana fermions allowing us to achieve quantum computing. Here, we report superconductivity and compensation of electrons and holes in single crystals of the nodal-line semimetal CaSb$_2$. We characterize the superconducting state and find that Cooper pairs have moderate-weak coupling, and the superconducting transition in specific heat down to 0.22 K deviates from that of a BCS superconductor. The non-saturating magnetoresistance and electron-hole compensation at low temperature are consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations showing nodal-line features. Furthermore, we observe de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations consistent with a small Fermi surface in the semimetallic state of CaSb$_2$. Our DFT calculations show that the two electron bands crossing the Fermi level are associated with Sb1 zig-zag chains, while the hole band is associated with Sb2 zig-zag chains. The Sb1 zig-zag chains form a distorted square net, which may relate the $M$Sb$_2$ family to the well known $M$SbTe square net semimetals. Realization of superconductivity and a compensated semimetal state in single crystals of CaSb$_2$ establishes the diantimonide family as a candidate class of materials for achieving topological superconductivity.

Sc3Mn3Al7Si5 is a rare example of a correlated metal in which the Mn moments form a kagome lattice. The absence of magnetic ordering to the lowest temperatures suggests that geometrical frustration of magnetic interactions may lead to strong magnetic fluctuations. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Sc3Mn3Al7Si5, finding that phonon scattering dominates for energies from ~20 - 50 meV. These results are in good agreement with ab initio calculations of the phonon dispersions and densities of states, and as well reproduce the measured specific heat. A weak magnetic signal was detected at energies less than ~10 meV, present only at the lowest temperatures. The magnetic signal is broad and quasielastic, as expected for metallic paramagnets.

We report measurements on Ti$_4$MnBi$_2$, where a crystal structure involving linear chains of Mn ions suggests one-dimensional magnetic character. The electrical resistivity is metallic, consistent with the results of electronic structure calculations that find a robust Fermi surface albeit with moderate electronic correlations. Curie-Weiss fit to the magnetic susceptibility finds that the Mn moments are in the low-spin $S = 1/2$ configuration. Neutron diffraction measurements detect weak antiferromagnetic order within the Mn chains, with further evidence for the small staggered moment coming from the entropy associated with the ordering peak in the specific heat as well as from the results of spin-polarized electronic structure calculations. The antiferromagnetic moments are apparently associated with the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ and $d_{xy}$ orbitals of Mn while the remaining Mn orbitals are delocalized. Strong quantum fluctuations, possibly related to an electronic instability that forms the Mn moment or to the one-dimensional character of Ti$_4$MnBi$_2$, nearly overcome magnetic order., Comment: 13 pages and 7 figures

The fundamental excitations in an antiferromagnetic chain of spins-1/2 are spinons, de-confined fractional quasiparticles that when combined in pairs, form a triplet excitation continuum. In an Ising-like spin chain the continuum is gapped and the ground state is N{\'e}el ordered. Here, we report high resolution neutron scattering experiments, which reveal how a magnetic field closes this gap and drives the spin chains in \YPP\ to a critical, disordered Luttinger-liquid state. In \YPP\ the effective spins-1/2 describe the dynamics of large, Ising-like Yb magnetic moments, ensuring that the measured excitations are exclusively longitudinal, which we find to be well described by time-dependent density matrix renormalization group calculations. The inter-chain coupling leads to the confinement of spinons, a condensed matter analog of quark confinement in quantum chromodynamics. Insensitive to transverse fluctuations, our measurements show how a gapless, dispersive longitudinal mode arises from confinement and evolves with magnetic order.

In most topological insulators, the valence and conduction band appear in reverse or inverted order compared to an equivalent insulator with isolated atoms. Here, we explore a different route towards topologically nontrivial states that may arise from metallic states present on the surface of bulk insulators without such band inversion. High-quality single crystals of HfNiSn show surface transport with weak anti-localization, consistent with a two-dimensional metallic state in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. Nonlinear I(V) curves indicate electronic correlations related to a chiral, nonlocal transport component that is qualitatively similar to a quantum Hall edge state, yet in the absence of external magnetic fields. The correlations themselves may play a decisive role in creating an apparent topologically nontrivial state on the HfNiSn surface., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al may be a prototype for exploring different aspects of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice, formed by planes of orthogonally coupled Yb ions. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility find incoherently fluctuating Yb$^{3+}$ moments coexisting with a weakly correlated metallic state that is confirmed by measurements of the electrical resistivity. Increasing signs of Kondo coherence are found with decreasing temperature, including an enhanced Sommerfeld coefficient and Kadowaki-Woods ratio that signal that the metallic state found at the lowest temperatures is a Fermi liquid where correlations have become significantly stronger. A pronounced peak in the electronic and magnetic specific heat indicates that the coupling of the Yb moments to the conduction electrons leads to an effective Kondo temperature that is approximately 30 K. The valence of Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al has been investigated with electron spectroscopy methods. Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al is found to be strongly intermediate valent ($v_F=2.68(2)$ at 80 K). Taken together, these experimental data are consistent with a scenario where a coherent Kondo lattice forms in Yb$_2$Si$_2$Al from an incoherently fluctuating ensemble of Yb moments with incomplete Kondo compensation, and strong intermediate valence character., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review B

We report results of a muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) study of YFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, a quasi-2D nearly-ferromagnetic metal in which unconventional quantum critical behavior is observed. No static Fe$^{2+}$ magnetism, with or without long-range order, is found down to 19~mK\@. The dynamic muon spin relaxation rate~$\lambda$ exhibits power-law divergences in temperature and magnetic field, the latter for fields that are too weak to affect the electronic spin dynamics directly. We attribute this to the proportionality of $\lambda(\omega_\mu,T)$ to the dynamic structure factor~$S(\omega_\mu,T)$, where $\omega_\mu \approx 10^5$--$10^7~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ is the muon Zeeman frequency. These results suggest critical divergences of $S(\omega_\mu,T)$ in both temperature and frequency. Power-law scaling and a 2D dissipative quantum XY (2D-DQXY) model both yield forms for $S(\omega,T)$ that agree with neutron scattering data ($\omega \approx 10^{12}~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$). Extrapolation to $\mu$SR frequencies agrees semi-quantitatively with the observed temperature dependence of $\lambda(\omega_\mu,T)$, but predicts frequency independence for $\omega_\mu \ll T$ in extreme disagreement with experiment. We conclude that the quantum critical spin dynamics of YFe$_2$Al$_{10}$ are not well understood at low frequencies., Comment: 5 figures

A phase transition occurs when correlated regions of a new phase grow to span the system and the fluctuations within the correlated regions become long-lived. Here we present neutron scattering measurements showing that this conventional picture must be replaced by a new paradigm in \boldmath$\mathrm{YFe}_2\mathrm{Al}_{10}$, a compound that forms naturally very close to a \boldmath$T=0$ quantum phase transition. Fully quantum mechanical fluctuations of localized moments are found to diverge at low energies and temperatures, however the fluctuating moments are entirely without spatial correlations. Zero temperature order in \boldmath$\mathrm{YFe}_2\mathrm{Al}_{10}$ is achieved by a new and entirely local type of quantum phase transition that may originate with the creation of the moments themselves., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure, including supplemental material

An important problem in contemporary physics concerns quantum-critical fluctuations in metals. A scaling function for the momentum, frequency, temperature and magnetic field dependence of the correlation function near a 2D-ferromagnetic quantum-critical point (QCP) is constructed, and its singularities are determined by comparing to the recent calculations of the correlation functions of the dissipative quantum XY model (DQXY). The calculations are motivated by the measured properties of the metallic compound YFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, which is a realization of the DQXY model in 2D. The frequency, temperature and magnetic field dependence of the scaling function as well as the singularities measured in the experiments are given by the theory without adjustable exponents. The same model is applicable to the superconductor-insulator transitions, classes of metallic AFM-QCPs, and as fluctuations of the loop-current ordered state in hole-doped cuprates. The results presented here lend credence to the solution found for the 2D-DQXY model, and its applications in understanding quantum-critical properties of diverse systems., Comment: Experimental results on dynamics near the quantum-critical point have been added with some additions in the text to point out their correspondence with theory. Exotic quantum states and fractionalized magnetic excitations, such as spinons in one-dimensional chains, are generally viewed as belonging to the domain of 3d transition metal systems with spins 1/2. Our neutron scattering experiments on the 4f-electron metal Yb$_2$Pt$_2$Pb overturn this common wisdom. We observe broad magnetic continuum dispersing in only one direction, which indicates that the underlying elementary excitations are spinons carrying fractional spin-1/2. These spinons are the quantum dynamics of the anisotropic, orbital-dominated Yb moments, and thus these effective quantum spins are emergent variables that encode the electronic orbitals. The unique birthmark of their unusual origin is that only longitudinal spin fluctuations are measurable, while the transverse excitations such as spin waves are virtually invisible to magnetic neutron scattering. The proliferation of these orbital-spinons strips the electrons of their orbital identity, and we thus report here a new electron fractionalization phenomenon, charge-orbital separation., Comment: Manuscript (15 pages, 4 figures) merged with the Supplementary Information (33 pages, 10 figures)

We present optical transmission measurements that reveal a charge gap of 0.86 eV in the local moment antiferromagnetic insulator BaMn$_2$As$_2$, an order of magnitude larger than previously reported. Density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations correctly reproduce this charge gap only when a strong Hund's coupling is considered. Thus, BaMn$_2$As$_2$ is a member of a wider class of Mn pnictide compounds that are Mott-Hund's insulators. We also present optical reflectance for metallic 2% K doped BaMn$_2$As$_2$ that we use to extract the optical conductivity at different temperatures. The optical conductivity $\sigma_1$($\omega$) exhibits a metallic response that is well described by a simple Drude term. Both $\sigma$($\omega$$\rightarrow$0, T) and $\rho$(T) exhibit Fermi liquid temperature dependencies. From these measurements, we argue that a more strongly correlated Hund's metal version of the parent compounds of the iron pnictide superconductors has not yet been realized by doping this class of Hund's insulators.

We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMn$_2$Sb$_2$, which consists of corrugated honeycomb layers of Mn. The dispersion of magnetic excitations has been measured along the H and L directions in reciprocal space, with a maximum excitation energy of $\approx$ 24 meV. These excitations are well described by spin waves in a Heisenberg model, including first and second neighbor exchange interactions, J$_{1}$ and J$_{2}$, in the Mn plane and also an exchange interaction between planes. The determined ratio J$_{2}$/J$_{1}$ $\approx$ 1/6 suggests that CaMn$_2$Sb$_2$ is the first example of a compound that lies very close to the mean field tricritical point, known for the classical Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice, where the N\'eel phase and two different spiral phases coexist. The magnitude of the determined exchange interactions reveal a mean field ordering temperature $\approx$ 4 times larger than the reported N\'eel temperature T$_{N}$ = 85 K, suggesting significant frustration arising from proximity to the tricritical point., Comment: 4 figures, 6 pages

Itinerant and local moment magnetism have substantively different origins, and require distinct theoretical treatment. A unified theory of magnetism has long been sought after, and remains elusive, mainly due to the limited number of known itinerant magnetic systems. In the case of the two such examples discovered several decades ago, the itinerant ferromagnets ZrZn_2 and Sc_3In, the understanding of their magnetic ground states draws on the existence of 3d electrons subject to strong spin fluctuations. Similarly, in Cr, an elemental itinerant antiferromagnet (IAFM) with a spin density wave (SDW) ground state, its 3d character has been deemed crucial to it being magnetic. Here we report the discovery of the first IAFM compound with no magnetic constituents, TiAu. Antiferromagnetic order occurs below a Neel temperature T_N ~ 36 K, about an order of magnitude smaller than in Cr, rendering the spin fluctuations in TiAu more important at low temperatures. This new IAFM challenges the currently limited understanding of weak itinerant antiferromagnetism, while providing long sought-after insights into the effects of spin fluctuations in itinerant electron systems., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

We report the first comprehensive study of the high temperature form ($\alpha$-phase) of iron disilicide. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and resistivity were performed on well characterized single crystals. With a nominal iron $d^6$ configuration, and a quasi-two dimensional crystal structure that strongly resembles that of LiFeAs, $\alpha$-FeSi$_2$ is a potential candidate for unconventional superconductivity. Akin to LiFeAs, $\alpha$-FeSi$_2$ does not develop any magnetic order, and we confirm its metallic state down to the lowest temperatures ($T$=1.8 K). However, our experiments reveal that paramagnetism and electronic correlation effects in $\alpha$-FeSi$_2$ are considerably weaker than in the pnictides. Band theory calculations yield small Sommerfeld coefficients of the electronic specific heat $\gamma=C_e/T$ that are in excellent agreement with experiment. Additionally, realistic many-body calculations further corroborate that quasi-particle mass enhancements are only modest in $\alpha$-FeSi$_{2}$ . Remarkably, we find that the natural tendency to vacancy formation in the iron sublattice has little influence on the iron valence and the density of states at the Fermi level. Moreover, Mn doping does not significantly change the electronic state of the Fe ion. This suggests that the iron valence is protected against hole doping, and indeed the substitution of Co for Fe causes a rigid-band like response of the electronic properties. As a key difference from the pnictides, we identify the smaller inter-iron layer spacing, which causes the active orbitals near the Fermi level to be of a different symmetry in $\alpha$-FeSi$_2$. This change in orbital character might be responsible for the lack of superconductivity in this system, providing constraints on pairing theories in the iron based pnictides and chalcogenides., Comment: 8 figures

Neutron diffraction measurements were carried out on single crystals and powders of Yb2Pt2Pb, where Yb moments form planes of orthogonal dimers in the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland Lattice (SSL). Yb2Pt2Pb orders antiferromagnetically at TN=2.07 K, and the magnetic structure determined from these measurements features the interleaving of two orthogonal sublattices into a 5*5*1 magnetic supercell that is based on stripes with moments perpendicular to the dimer bonds, which are along (110) and (-110). Magnetic fields applied along (110) or (-110) suppress the antiferromagnetic peaks from an individual sublattice, but leave the orthogonal sublattice unaffected, evidence for the Ising character of the Yb moments in Yb2Pt2Pb. Specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements concur with neutron elastic scattering results that the longitudinal critical fluctuations are gapped with E about 0.07 meV., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The weakness of electron-electron correlations in the itinerant antiferromagnet Cr doped with V has long been considered the reason that neither new collective electronic states or even non Fermi liquid behaviour are observed when antiferromagnetism in Cr$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$ is suppressed to zero temperature. We present the results of neutron and electron diffraction measurements of several lightly doped single crystals of Cr$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$ in which the archtypal spin density wave instability is progressively suppressed as the V content increases, freeing the nesting-prone Fermi surface for a new striped charge instability that occurs at x$_{c}$=0.037. This novel nesting driven instability relieves the entropy accumulation associated with the suppression of the spin density wave and avoids the formation of a quantum critical point by stabilising a new type of charge order at temperatures in excess of 400 K. Restructuring of the Fermi surface near quantum critical points is a feature found in materials as diverse as heavy fermions, high temperature copper oxide superconductors and now even elemental metals such as Cr., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures. We investigate signatures of electronic correlations in the narrow-gap semiconductor FeGa$_3$ by means of electrical resistivity and thermodynamic measurements performed on single crystals of FeGa$_3$, Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Ga$_3$ and FeGa$_{3-y}$Zn$_y$, complemented by a study of the 4$d$ analog material RuGa$_3$. We find that the inclusion of sizable amounts of Mn and Zn dopants into FeGa$_3$ does not induce an insulator-to-metal transition. Our study indicates that both substitution of Zn onto the Ga site and replacement of Fe by Mn introduces states into the semiconducting gap that remain localized even at highest doping levels. Most importantly, using neutron powder diffraction measurements, we establish that FeGa$_3$ orders magnetically above room temperature in a complex structure, which is almost unaffected by the doping with Mn and Zn. Using realistic many-body calculations within the framework of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT), we argue that while the iron atoms in FeGa$_3$ are dominantly in an $S=1$ state, there are strong charge and spin fluctuations on short time scales, which are independent of temperature. Further, the low magnitude of local contributions to the spin susceptibility advocates an itinerant mechanism for the spin response in FeGa$_3$. Our joint experimental and theoretical investigations classify FeGa$_3$ as a correlated band insulator with only small dynamical correlation effects, in which non--local exchange interactions are responsible for the spin gap of 0.4 eV and the antiferromagnetic order. We show that hole doping of FeGa$_3$ leads, within DMFT, to a notable strengthening of many--body renormalizations., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures

We present inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization measurements of the antiferromagnetic insulator LaMnPO that are well described by a Heisenberg spin model. These measurements are consistent with the presence of two-dimensional magnetic correlations up to a temperature T$_{max}$ $\approx$ 700 K >> T$_{N}$ = 375 K, the N\'eel temperature. Optical transmission measurements show the T = 300 K direct charge gap $\Delta$ = 1 eV has decreased only marginally by 500 K and suggest it decreases by only 10% at T$_{max}$. Density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory calculations reproduce a direct charge gap in paramagnetic LaMnPO only when a strong Hund's coupling J$_{H}$ = 0.9 eV is included, as well as onsite Hubbard U = 8 eV. These results show the direct charge gap in LaMnPO is rather insensitive to antiferromagnetic exchange coupling and instead is a result of the local physics governed by U and J$_{H}$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We report results of a muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR) study of dilute Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ alloys, with emphasis on Ni concentrations $x =$ 0.0243 and 0.025. These are close to the critical value $x_\mathrm{cr}$ for the onset of ferromagnetic long-range order (LRO), which is a candidate for a quantum critical point. The 2.43 and 2.5 at.% Ni alloys exhibit similar $\mu$SR properties. Both samples are fully magnetic, with average muon local fields $\langle B^\mathrm{loc}\rangle =$ 2.0 and 3.8 mT and Curie temperatures $T_C =$ 1.0 and 2.03 K for 2.43 and 2.5 at.% Ni, respectively, at $T = 0$. The temperature dependence of $\langle B^\mathrm{loc}\rangle$ suggests ordering of Ni spin clusters rather than isolated spins. Just above $T_C$ a two-phase region is found with separate volume fractions of quasistatic short-range order (SRO) and paramagnetism. The SRO fraction decreases to zero with increasing temperature a few kelvin above $T_C$. This mixture of SRO and paramagnetism is consistent with the notion of an inhomogeneous alloy with Ni clustering. The measured values of $T_C$ extrapolate to $x_\mathrm{cr}$ = 0.0236 $\pm$ 0.0027. The dynamic muon spin relaxation in the vicinity of $T_C$ differs for the two samples: a relaxation-rate maximum at $T_C$ is observed for $x$ = 0.0243, reminiscent of critical slowing down, whereas for $x =$ 0.025 no dynamic relaxation is observed within the $\mu$SR time window. The low-field magnetic response of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor YPtBi ($T_c =0.77$ K) is investigated. Ac-susceptibility and dc-magnetization measurements provide solid evidence for bulk superconductivity with a volume fraction of $\sim 70\%$. The lower critical field is surprisingly small: $B_{c1} = 0.008$ mT $(T \rightarrow 0)$. Muon spin rotation experiments in a transverse magnetic field of 0.01 T show a weak increase of the Gaussian damping rate $\sigma_{TF}$ below $T_c$, which yields a London penetration depth $\lambda = 1.6 \pm 0.2~ \mu$m. The zero-field Kubo-Toyabe relaxation rate $\sigma_{KT}$ equals $0.129 \pm 0.004~\mu$s$^{-1}$ and does not show a significant change below $T_c$. Recently CsTlCl3 and CsTlF3 perovskites were theoretically predicted to be potential superconductors if they are optimally doped. The synthesis of these two compounds, together with a complete characterization of the samples are reported. CsTlCl3 is obtained as orange crystals in two different polymorphs: a tetragonal (I4/m) and a cubic (Fm-3m) phase. CsTlF3 is formed as a light brown powder, also as a double cubic perovskite (Fm-3m). In all three CsTlX3 phases Tl1+ and Tl3+ were located in two different crystallographic positions that accommodate their different bond lengths. In CsTlCl3 some Tl vacancies are found in the Tl1+ position. The charge ordering between Tl1+ and Tl3+ was confirmed by x-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectroscopy of CsTlCl3 under high pressure (58 GPa) did not indicate any phase transition to a possible single Tl2+ state. However, the highly insulating material becomes less resistive with increasing high pressure, while undergoing a change in the optical properties, from transparent to deeply opaque red, indicative of a decrease of the band gap. We report magnetization, specific heat, and NMR investigations on YFe2Al10 over a wide range in temperature and magnetic field and zero field (NQR) measurements. Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by T (1/T1T) follow a weak power law (T^-0.4) temperature dependence, which is a signature of critical fluctuations of Fe moments. The value of the Sommerfeld-Wilson ratio and linear relation between 1/T1T and chi(T) suggest the existence of ferromagnetic correlations in this system. No magnetic ordering down to 50 mK in Cp(T) and the unusual temperature and field scaling of the bulk and NMR data are associated with a magnetic instability which drives the system to quantum criticality. The magnetic properties of the system are tuned by field wherein ferromagnetic fluctuations are suppressed and a crossover from quantum critical to FL behavior is observed with increasing magnetic field.

We present here the results of electrical resistivity {\rho}, magnetization M, ac susceptibility \c{hi}ac', and specific heat CM measurements that have been carried out on single crystals of Yb3Pt4 over a wide range of fields and temperatures. The 2.4-K N\'eel temperature that is found in zero field collapses under field to a first-order transition TN=0 at BCEP=1.85 T. In the absence of antiferromagnetic order, the specific heat CM(T,B), the magnetization M(T,B), and even the resistivity {\rho}(T,B) all display B/T scaling, indicating that they are dominated by strong paramagnetic fluctuations, where the only characteristic energy scale results from the Zeeman splitting of an energetically isolated, Yb doublet ground state. This paramagnetic scattering disappears with the onset of antiferromagnetic order, revealing Fermi liquid behavior {\Delta}{\rho}=AT2 that persists up to the antiferromagnetic phase line TN(B), but not beyond. The first-order character of TN=0 and the ubiquity of the paramagnetic fluctuations imply that non-Fermi-liquid behaviors are absent in Yb3Pt4. In contrast to heavy fermions such as YbRh2Si2, Yb3Pt4 represents an extremely simple regime of f-electron behavior where the Yb moments and conduction electrons are almost decoupled, and where Kondo physics plays little role., Comment: 10 pages,12 figures

We present measurements of the magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ and the magnetization M of single crystals of metallic \ypp, where localized Yb moments lie on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland Lattice (SSL). Strong magnetic frustration is found in this quasi-two dimensional system, which orders antiferromagnetically (AF) at T$_{N}$=2.02 \emph{K} from a paramagnetic liquid of Yb-dimers, having a gap $\Delta$=4.6 \emph{K} between the singlet ground state and the triplet excited states. Magnetic fields suppress the AF order, which vanishes at a 1.25 \emph{T} quantum critical point. The spin gap $\Delta$ persists to 1.5 \emph{T}, indicating that the AF degenerates into a liquid of dimer triplets at T=0. Quantized steps are observed in M(B) within the AF state, a signature of SSL systems. Our results show that \ypp is unique, both as a metallic SSL system that is close to an AF quantum critical point, and as a heavy fermion compound where geometrical frustration plays a decisive role.

Widespread adoption of superconducting technologies requires the discovery of new materials with enhanced properties, especially higher superconducting transition temperatures T$_{c}$. The unexpected discovery of high T$_{c}$ superconductivity in cuprates and in materials as diverse as heavy fermions, organic conductors, and endohedrally-doped fullerenes suggests that the highest T$_{c}$s occur when pressure or doping transform the localized and moment-bearing electrons in antiferromagnetic insulators into itinerant and weakly magnetic metals. The absence of this delocalization transition in Fe-based superconductors may limit their T$_{c}$s, but even larger T$_{c}$s may be possible in their isostructural Mn analogs, which are antiferromagnetic insulators like the cuprates. It is generally believed that prohibitively large pressures would be required to suppress the strong Hund's rule coupling in these Mn-based compounds, collapsing the insulating gap and enabling superconductivity. Indeed, no Mn-based compounds are known to be superconductors. The electronic structure calculations and x-ray diffraction measurements presented here challenge these long held beliefs, finding that only modest pressures are required to transform LaMnPO, isostructural to superconducting host LaFeAsO, from an insulating tetragonal structure with a large Mn moment to a gapless orthorhombic structure with a small Mn moment. Proximity to this electronic delocalization transition in LaMnPO results in a highly interacting metallic state, the familiar breeding ground of superconductivity., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Infrared transmission and electrical resistivity measurements reveal that single crystals of LaMnPO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ (x $\leq$ 0.28) are insulating. The optical gap obtained from transmission measurements is nearly unaffected by doping, decreasing only slightly from 1.3 eV in undoped LaMnPO to 1.1 eV for x = 0.04. The activation gaps obtained from electrical resistivity measurements are smaller by at least an order of magnitude, signalling the presence of states within the optical gap. At low temperatures, the resistivity is described well by variable range hopping conduction between these localized gap states. Analysis of the hopping conduction suggests that the gap states become slightly more delocalized with fluorine content, although metallic conduction is not observed even for fluorine concentrations as large as x = 0.28., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We present measurements of the specific heat, magnetization, magnetocaloric effect and magnetic neutron diffraction carried out on single crystals of antiferromagnetic Yb$_{3}$Pt$_{4}$, where highly localized Yb moments order at $T_{\rm N}=2.4$ K in zero field. The antiferromagnetic order was suppressed to $T_{\rm N}\rightarrow 0$ by applying a field of 1.85 T in the $ab$ plane. Magnetocaloric effect measurements show that the antiferromagnetic phase transition is always continuous for $T_{\rm N}>0$, although a pronounced step in the magnetization is observed at the critical field in both neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements. These steps sharpen with decreasing temperature, but the related divergences in the magnetic susceptibility are cut off at the lowest temperatures, where the phase line itself becomes vertical in the field-temperature plane. As $T_{\rm N}\rightarrow0$, the antiferromagnetic transition is increasingly influenced by a quantum critical endpoint, where $T_{\rm N}$ ultimately vanishes in a first order phase transition., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present here measurements of the thermopower, thermal conductivity, and electrical resistivity of the newly reported compound CaFe4As3. Evidence is presented from specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements that a substantial fraction of the Fermi surface survives the onset of spin density wave (SDW) order at the Neel temperature TN=88 K, and its subsequent commensurate lockin transition at T2=26.4 K. The specific heat below T2 consists of a normal metallic component from the ungapped parts of the Fermi surface, and a Bardeen-Cooper- Schrieffer (BCS) component that represents the SDW gapping of the Fermi surface. A large Kadowaki-Woods ratio is found at low temperatures, showing that the ground state of CaFe4As3 is a strongly interacting Fermi liquid. The thermal conductivity of CaFe4As3 is an order of magnitude smaller than those of conventional metals at all temperatures, due to a strong phonon scattering. The thermoelectric power displays a sign change from positive to negative indicating that a partial gap forms at the Fermi level with the onset of commensurate spin density wave order at T2=26.4 K. The small value of the thermopower and the enhancements of the resistivity due to gap formation and strong quasiparticle interactions offset the low value of the thermal conductivity, yielding only a modest value for the thermoelectric figure of merit Z < 5x10^-6 1/K in CaFe4As3. The results of ab initio electronic structure calculations are reported, confirming that the sign change in the thermopower at T2 is reflected by a sign change in the slope of the density of states at the Fermi level. Values for the quasiparticle renormalization are derived from measurements of the specific heat and thermopower, indicating that as T->0, CaFe4As3 is among the most strongly correlated of the known Fe-based pnictide and chalcogenide systems., Comment: 8 pages with 5 figures

Muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements have been carried out on the unconventional antiferromagnet Yb_3Pt_4. Oscillations are observed below T_N = 2.22(1) K, consistent with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Neel temperature observed in bulk experiments. In agreement with neutron diffraction experiments the oscillation frequency omega_ mu(T) follows a S = 1/2 mean-field temperature dependence, yielding a quasistatic local field 1.71(2) kOe at T = 0. A crude estimate gives an ordered moment of ~0.66 mu_B at T = 0, comparable to 0.81 mu_B from neutron diffraction. As T approaches T_N from above the dynamic relaxation rate lambda_d exhibits no critical slowing down, consistent with a mean-field transition. In the AFM phase a T-linear fit to lambda_d(T), appropriate to a Fermi liquid, yields highly enhanced values of lambda_d/T and the Korringa constant K_ mu^2 T/lambda_d, with K_ mu the estimated muon Knight shift. A strong suppression of lambda_d by applied field is observed in the AFM phase. These properties are consistent with the observed large Sommerfeld-Wilson and Kadowaki-Woods ratios in Yb_3Pt_4 (although the data do not discriminate between Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi-liquid states), and suggest strong enhancement of q ~ 0 spin correlations between large-Fermi-volume band quasiparticles in the AFM phase of Yb_3Pt_4., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, submitted to J. We have used neutron diffraction measurements to study the zero-field magnetic structure of the intermetallic compound Yb3Pt4, which was earlier found to order antiferromagnetically at the Neel temperature TN=2.4 K, and displays a field-driven quantum critical point at 1.6 T. In Yb3Pt4, the Yb moments sit on a single low-symmetry site in the rhombohedral lattice with space group R-3. The Yb ions form octahedra with edges that are twisted with respect to the hexagonal unit cell, a twisting that results in every Yb ion having exactly one Yb nearest neighbor. Below TN, we found new diffracted intensity due to a k=0 magnetic structure. This magnetic structure was compared to all symmetry-allowed magnetic structures, and was subsequently refined. The best fitting magnetic structure model is antiferromagnetic, and involves pairs of Yb nearest neighbors on which the moments point almost exactly towards each other. This structure has moment components within the ab-plane as well as parallel to the c-axis, although the easy magnetization direction lies in the ab-plane. Our magnetization results suggest that besides the crystal-electric field anisotropy, anisotropic exchange favoring alignment along the c-axis is responsible for the overall direction of the ordered moments. The magnitude of the ordered Yb moments in Yb3Pt4 is 0.81 uB/Yb at 1.4 K. The analysis of the bulk properties, the size of the ordered moment, and the observation of well-defined crystal-field levels argue that the Yb moments are spatially localized in zero field., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure, submitted to Phys. We have studied the evolution of the weakly first order antiferromagnetic transition in heavy fermion Yb$_3$Pt$_4$ using a combination of specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity experiments. We show that magnetic fields suppress the Neel temperature, as well as the specific heat jump, the latent heat, and the entropy of the transition, driving a critical endpoint at 1.2 K and 1.5 T. At higher fields, the antiferromagnetic transition becomes second order, and this line of transitions in turn terminates at a quantum critical point at 1.62 T. Both the ordered and high field paramagnetic states are Fermi liquids at low temperature, although the former has a much larger magnetic susceptibility and stronger quasiparticle scattering. Unlike previously studied quantum critical systems, the quasiparticle mass in Yb$_3$Pt$_4$ does not diverge at the quantum critical point, implying that here the quasiparticle interactions drive the zero temperature transition. The Fermi liquid parameters are nearly field-independent in the ordered state, indicating that the fluctuations never become fully critical, as their divergences are interrupted by the first order antiferromagnetic transition., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals of Cr1-xVx (x=0, 0.02, 0.037) show that the ordering moment and the Neel temperature are continuously suppressed as x approaches 0.037, a proposed Quantum Critical Point (QCP). The wave vector Q of the spin density wave (SDW) becomes more incommensurate as x increases in accordance with the two band model. At xc=0.037 we have found temperature dependent, resolution limited elastic scattering at 4 incommensurate wave vectors Q=(1+/-delta_1,2, 0, 0)*2pi/a, which correspond to 2 SDWs with Neel temperatures of 19 K and 300 K. Our neutron diffraction measurements indicate that the electronic structure of Cr is robust, and that tuning Cr to its QCP results not in the suppression of antiferromagnetism, but instead enables new spin ordering due to novel nesting of the Fermi surface of Cr., Comment: Submitted as a part of proceedings of LT25 (Amsterdam 2008)

We report the synthesis and basic properties of single crystals of a new binary compound, Yb$_{3}$Pt$_{4}$. The Yb ions in this compound are fully trivalent, and heat capacity measurements show that the crystal field scheme involves a doublet ground state, well separated from the excited states, which are fully occupied above $\sim$ 150 K. The heat capacity displays a large, weakly first order anomaly at 2.4 K, where a cusp is observed in the magnetic susceptibility signalling the onset of antiferromagnetic order. The entropy associated with this order is the full Rln2 of the doublet ground state, however the magnetic susceptibility in the ordered phase is dominated by a large and temperature independent component below the Neel temperature. The heat capacity in the ordered state originates with ferromagnetic spin waves, giving evidence for the inherently local moment character of the ordered state. The electrical resistivity is unusually large, and becomes quadratic in temperature exactly at the Neel temperature. The absence of analogous Fermi liquid behavior in the heat capacity and the magnetic susceptibility implies that Yb$_{3}$Pt$_{4}$ is a low electron density system, where the Fermi surface is further gapped by the onset of magnetic order., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We have synthesized single crystals of Yb$_{2}$Pt$_{2}$Pb, which crystallize in the layered U$_{2}$Pt$_{2}$Sn-type structure, where planes of Yb ions lie on a triangular network. We report here the first results of magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity experiments. The lattice constants and high temperature magnetic susceptibility indicate that the Yb ions are trivalent, while Schottky peaks in the specific heat show that the ground state is a well isolated doublet. Significant magnetic anisotropy is observed, with the ratio of susceptibilities perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic planes differing by as much as a factor of 30 at the lowest temperatures. Antiferromagnetic order occurs at a N\'eel temperature $T_{\rm N}$=2.07 K, a transition temperature which is more than an order of magnitude smaller than the mean field interactions reflected by the in-plane Weiss temperature. Further evidence for short ranged magnetic fluctuations is found in the magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity, which have broad peaks above $T_{\rm N}$, and in the slow development of the magnetic entropy at $T_{\rm N}$. Our experiments indicate that Yb$_{2}$Pt$_{2}$Pb is a quasi-two dimensional and localized moment system, where strong magnetic frustration may arise from the geometry of the underlying Shastry-Sutherland lattice., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We have performed elastic neutron scattering studies of the quantum critical antiferromagnet Cr$_{0.963}$V$_{0.037}$. We have found that unlike pure Cr, which orders at two incommensurate wavevectors, Cr$_{0.963}$V$_{0.037}$ orders at four incommensurate and one commensurate wavevectors. We have found strong temperature dependent scattering at the commensurate and incommensurate wavevectors below 250 K. We have synthesized a new intermetallic compound with a distorted Heusler structure, YbRh$_{2}$Pb. We present a study of the magnetic, thermal, and transport properties. Heat capacity measurements revealed that YbRh$_{2}$Pb orders magnetically below T$_{N}$=0.57 K from a paramagnetic state with substantial crystal electric field splitting. We have succeeded in synthesizing of single crystals of a new intermetallic compound, Ce$_{3}$Rh$_{4}$Pb$_{13}$. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that the Ce moments are highly localized, despite the metallic character of the electrical resistivity. Heat capacity measurements reveal that the cubic crystal electric field lifts the six-fold degeneracy of the Ce$^{3+}$ ground state, with the quartet state separated by approximately 60 K from the doublet ground state. The magnetic field dependence of the heat capacity at low temperature indicates a further splitting of the doublet, but no sign of magnetic order was found above 0.35 K., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PRB

We present a study of the magnetic properties of Zr1-xNbxZn2, using an Arrott plot analysis of the magnetization. The Curie temperature TC is suppressed to zero temperature for Nb concentration xC=0.083+/-0.002, while the spontaneous moment vanishes linearly with TC as predicted by the Stoner theory. The initial susceptibility chi displays critical behavior for x<=xC, with a critical exponent which smoothly crosses over from the mean field to the quantum critical value. For high temperatures and x<=xC and for low temperatures and x>=xC we find that chi^(-1)=chi_o^(-1)+aT^(4/3), where chi_o^(-1) vanishes as x approaches xC. The resulting magnetic phase diagram shows that the quantum critical behavior extends over the widest range of temperatures for x=xC, and demonstrates how a finite transition temperature ferromagnet is transformed into a paramagnet, via a quantum critical point., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. We present inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the intermetallic compounds Ce(Ru$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$)$_2$Ge$_2$ ($x$=0.65, 0.76 and 0.87). These compounds represent samples in a magnetically ordered phase, at a quantum critical point and in the heavy-fermion phase, respectively. We show that at high temperatures the three compositions have the identical response of a local moment system. However, at low temperatures the spin fluctuations in the critical composition are given by non-Fermi-liquid dynamics, while the spin fluctuations in the heavy fermion system show a simple exponential decay in time. In both compositions, the lifetime of the fluctuations is determined solely by the distance to the quantum critical point. We discuss the implications of these observations regarding the possible origins of non-Fermi-liquid behavior in this system., Comment: 4 figures, submitted to PRB

We present the results of electrical resistivity and Hall effect measurements on single crystals of HfNiSn, TiPtSn, and TiNiSn. Semiconducting behavior is observed in each case, involving the transport of a small number of highly compensated carriers. Magnetization measurements suggest that impurities and site disorder create both localized magnetic moments and extended paramagnetic states, with the susceptibility of the latter increasing strongly with reduced temperature. The magnetoresistance is sublinear or linear in fields ranging from 0.01 - 9 Tesla at the lowest temperatures. As the temperature increases, the normal quadratic magnetoresistance is regained, initially at low fields, and at the highest temperatures extending over the complete range of fields. The origin of the vanishingly small field scale implied by these measurements remains unknown, presenting a challenge to existing classical and quantum mechanical theories of magnetoresistance., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

We have combined the results of magnetization and Hall effect measurements to conclude that the ferromagnetic moments of lightly doped CaB6 samples display no systematic variation with electron doping level. Removal of the surface with acid etching substantially reduces the measured moment, although the Hall constant and resistivity are unaffected, indicating that the ferromagnetism largely resides on and near the sample surface. Electron microprobe experiments reveal that Fe and Ni are found at the edges of facets and growth steps, and on other surface features introduced during growth. We present the results of inelastic neutron scattering measurements, performed near the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in Ce(Ru_{0.24} Fe_{0.76})_2 Ge_2. Both local and long range fluctuations of the local moments are observed, but due to the Kondo effect only the latter are critical. We propose a phenomenological expression which fits the energy $E$, temperature T and wave vector q dependences of the generalized susceptibility chi(q,E,T), describing the non-Fermi liquid E/T scaling found at every wave vector.

We present a magnetotransport study of the low--carrier density ferromagnet EuB_6. This semimetallic compound, which undergoes two ferromagnetic transitions at T_l = 15.3 K and T_c = 12.5 K, exhibits close to T_l a colossal magnetoresistivity (CMR). We quantitatively compare our data to recent theoretical work, which however fails to explain our observations.
