What are Cy Twombly's sculptures made of? This article presents an overview of a non-destructive examination conducted on three sculptures by American artist Cy Twombly (1928–2011) as part of an art-technological research project at the Doerner Institut in Munich. The artworks are part of the collection of the Brandhorst Museum and belong to Twombly's series of so-called 'Original Sculptures': assemblages of individual found objects, which the artist covered and modified with layers of plaster and white paint. To develop a long-term preservation strategy, the research focused on understanding the materials and construction methods used in Twombly's sculptures. In collaboration with the Chair of Non-Destructive Testing at the Technical University of Munich, the artworks were inspected using X-ray radiography and computed tomography. The results showed that Cy Twombly used various everyday objects made from wood, plastics, metal, and paper/cardboard to build the assemblages. Unexpectedly, the examinations revealed that the individual parts are solely held together by the coating of plaster and paint, lacking additional mechanical connections. The overall structure thus proved to be very fragile and highly sensitive to physical stresses, whether due to handling, transport, or strains in the microstructure caused by climatic fluctuations. Since little was known about Cy Twombly´s choice of materials and manufacturing details, the results offer valuable insights into the overall artistic process and decision-making of one of the most influential artists of the 20th/twenty-first centuries. Conservators can use the art-technological findings to monitor the sculptures 'condition and develop or adapt long-term preservation strategies, including aspects such as ambient climatic conditions and handling storage and transport specifications. In addition, the knowledge generated can be used for further research on the specific materials and transferred to other artworks by Cy Twombly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the attitudes and competencies of biology teacher candidates regarding virtual reality applications based on scientific and methodological developments for the improvement of the visualization system in biology. In this study, the survey model, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used. The sample group of the research consists of 244 biology teacher candidates studying at various universities in Kazakhstan in the 2022-2023 academic year. Research data were collected with a virtual reality attitude and competence scale developed by the researchers. After exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and construct validity studies were carried out, reliability analyses of the scale were made to get the final form of the scale, and Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was calculated. As a result of the research, it was determined that the attitudes of pre-service biology teachers towards virtual reality were high and their competencies related to virtual reality were low. This suggests that biology teacher candidates have a medium level of attitude and competence in the virtual reality attitude and competence scale. In line with the findings obtained from the research, suggestions were made to improve the virtual reality attitudes and competencies of teacher candidates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Performance and exhibition venues are well-suited for implementing business models that leverage Internet-of-Things (IoT) concepts to integrate both online and offline information. The use of IoT technologies has led to the emergence of omni-channel services, providing customers with information from both online and offline channels. However, there is a lack of field research on the practical implications of IoT concepts in art exhibitions. An action research methodology is required to address this gap, and one potential solution is to implement an IoT-based omni-channel service that integrates online and offline channels to enhance service quality and provide a seamless customer experience. Near Field Communication (NFC), iBeacon, and Internet buttons can be used in an art gallery to achieve these objectives. This study utilized action research methods to examine the impact of customers' technology interactions in an art gallery setting. The findings indicate that the inclusion of a physical interactive element has a positive effect on IoT use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The topic of this book is practical knowledge in early modern Europe, interpreted widely as recipes containing art procedures or medical panaceas between 1400 and 1700. In this book, the 1) origin or creation, 2) transmission or dissemination, and 3) use or consumption are key subjects for understanding the place of practical knowledge in early modern European society. After a historiographical and theoretical approach, this book applies Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizome metaphor to art technological literature. The first part ends with a study about medical practitioners and mediators who disseminate practical knowledge through the printing press. The second part of the book is entirely dedicated to the bookletA Very Proper Treatise (1573), using a microhistory approach to study it.

ACTIVATION (Chemistry) ,HEIFERS ,SWINE ,CATTLE ,COWS - Abstract
Electrical stimulation is an alternative to chemical activation to induce Ca2+ influx, responsible for the formation of pores in the cellular membrane. In order to activate the oocytes, electrical stimulation (E.S.) was performed on 30 oocytes derived from gilts (L1), sows (L2), heifers (L3) and cows (L4). We considered that the stage of development of four cells is eloquent for certifying the ES's division triggering and the results we are considering only refer to these parthenots. Following application of ES, oocyte activation occurred as follows: 6.6% at L1, 16.6% at L2, 20% at L3 and 46.6% at L4. It is obvious the higher maturation rate of oocytes from adult females as compared to young females (16.6% in sows versus 6.6% in gilts and 46.6% in cows versus 20% in heifers). The method of electrical stimulation of oocytes in the fusion chamber used in this paper is effective for activating the division in both bovine and swine oocytes. Activation of oocyte division following electrical stimulation is clearly superior when using oocytes from adult females. The electrical stimulation method used generated the upper division activation in cattle compared with the results obtained using swine oocytes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a standard technique for the characterisation of organic materials in conservation science. This analytical technique is particularly interesting to analyse historical varnishes from cultural artefacts, as only minute samples are required. Some limitations apply, however, when analysing such chemically complex multi-component materials with interfering absorption bands. A previously introduced sample pre-treatment method using gaseous sulfur tetrafluoride SF 4 has shown to widen the application fields of the IR-technique by improving its specificity. One of these new fields is its successful application to the characterisation of complex aged natural varnish and lacquer systems. The fluorination treatment leads to characteristic band shifts of four individual saturated and unsaturated acid groups attached at varying positions of the terpene backbone. This allows the separation of otherwise overlapping carbonyl bands of different ketones and ester groups. Based on this technique, inert and unique functional groups can be used as material specific markers to identify drying oil, shellac and different terpene resins in varnishes and lacquers. The proposed markers proved to be stable for several hundred years. These findings are particularly interesting, as it is now possible to trace such markers even in very old varnishes dating back to the 16th century – with a likewise simple technique. Renaissance painters used a number of inorganic color materials. The development of mineralogy as a discipline opened a new discourse on mineral pigments. Agricola and other naturalists were familiar with the contemporary writings on art technology, but their focus was different. Therefore, the exchange of knowledge between these two color worlds remained selective. One possible meeting point was the Kunstkammer where the study of natural objects and materials was combined with an interest in the manual execution of a painting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the article is to find out the technology role in art in general and in theater in particular. The prerequisite of such question is the indisputable fact that art, regarded as artistic creation, is one of the production types. This truth is fixed by language practice: an object of art (artifact) has long been called a work, that is, a product of production. Being a special (“spiritual”, and at the same time – artistic!) Production, art in general, and theatrical in particular, has all the basic properties of “production in general”, including organizational, economic and technological. Research methods. Historical is to study the evolution forms of production (including artistic); systemic is when considering an art work as a special, “closed” interaction system of its components is worldview (ideological), psychological, technical and technological; general scientific analysis and synthesis are to build a scientific art concept as a knowledge means, expression and creation. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the fact that for the first time a special significance in the technology artistic creation has been proved. Defining, as in ordinary production, that is, the material goods production, the social organization forms of labor (individual production, cooperation, manufactory, factory, industry), the artistic creativity technology, moreover, characterizes the specifics of each art type with its “craft”, “industrial” side. Conclusions. Art is considered as production (spiritual, and at the same time, artistic, but production!) And technology as the logic of this production proves that technology is not only “hostile” to art, but, on the contrary, it is deeply inherent in it: it represents the art poetics and determines the specifics of each art form from its practical, “craft”, side.,

Jenny Boulboullé demonstrates in this article how multi-layered and open-ended manuals could be. She focuses on the so-called Mayerne manuscript, a seventeenth-century source text, comprising more than 300 recipes and ‘how-to’ instructions. Many of the entries are dated and include geographical and professional information that identify artisans and master painters as sources of detailed descriptions of materials and techniques. The article deconstructs an interpretation of Theodore de Mayerne’s recipe compilation as a handbook intended for practical use, and instead shows that many voices lay behind Mayerne’s extensive documentation of artisanal know how. Boulboullé argues that the manuscript was perhaps never intended for publication, but that it provides an exceptional testimony to the practice of an early modern ethnographer of artisanal working methods. A closer look at Mayerne’s practice of note taking as a physician suggests that it functioned as a working tool to document technical and artisanal knowledge of materials.

Applied brocade (ger. Pressbrokat) is a decorative technique of wooden (and sometimes stone) surfaces which aims to imitate the typical relief of precious silk textiles. The effect is achieved by shaping a sheet of tin in a mould, filling it with a putty and then gluing it to the support. The discovery of an example of applied brocade on a Reliquary from the National gallery of Slovenia, dated around the beginning of the 16th century, was the motivating force behind a more in-depth research of the history and technology of the technique. This research laid the theoretical groundwork for the later intervention on the relief, which was mostly limited to re-gluing the loose fragments on the support. The consolidation allowed an easier reading of the motif and a more detailed analysis of its morphological aspects it also made possible to compare it with other preserved examples of applied brocade, mostly from artworks originating in Furlania. The similarities between these works and the Reliquary eased the graphic reconstruction of the motif, and offered an interesting insight into the connections between Friulian and Carinthian workshops of the early 16th century.

- Abstract
Art is considered as production (spiritual, and at the same time, artistic, but production!) And technology as the logic of this production proves that technology is not only “hostile” to art, but, on the contrary, it is deeply inherent in it: it represents the art poetics and determines the specifics of each art form from its practical, “craft”, side.

The 19th century archive database from Winsor & Newton (W&N), one of the leading artists' colourmen at that time, was thoroughly investigated in relation to their manufacturing processes for cochineal lake pigments. Two hundred and seventy-nine production records were studied: 36% pertained to carmine; 40% to crimson; and 24% to scarlet lakes. Ten main methods of synthesis were identified and evaluated. A selection of the recipes was reconstructed with as much historical accuracy as possible. The resulting pigments were characterised with micro-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis-NIR Fibre Optic Reflectance spectroscopy, and micro-spectrofluorimetry, and successfully compared with the chemical composition of historic W&N oil paint in tubes. This work revealed the commitment that W&N made to the quality and durability of their lake pigments, while the reconstructions provide reference materials for the study of the formulations used and their response to photodegradation.

- Abstract
- Abstract
As computer and mobile technologies have become more prevalent in recent decades, the need for thoughtful consideration and implementation of these tools into classroom curriculum has increased significantly. Within the field of art education, technology implementation presents a unique set of challenges as these tools can be used for both presentation and art creation purposes. K-12 art teachers are tasked with the responsibility of providing their students the necessary technology experience through their curriculum to foster creativity and the development of technical skills. But how are art teachers being trained to use technology in their classrooms? Within the framework of arts based research, with elements of narrative inquiry, autoethnography, and case study, this study examines the baseline inclination and orientation towards technology, or “technology predispositions,” art teacher candidates possess at the beginning of their licensure program. These predispositions, the Technology Averse, the Technology Willing, and the Technology Savvy, are presented as narrative constructions created from compiled course data and interview transcripts, that illustrate the numerous factors that influence art teacher candidates’ ability and willingness to integrate technology into their teaching practice. Based on the stories of former art education licensure students, barriers to technology integration are identified such as computer anxiety, a rejection of the idea of computer technologies as a medium for art-creation, and a lack of technology-specific student teacher mentoring. Findings of this research indicate the benefits of increased knowledge sharing and effective integration modeling practices, as well as the need for greater technology mentorship within the pre-service year and student teacher placements.
