Abstract: BackgroundEstimating and analyzing trends and patterns of health loss are essential to promote efficient resource allocation and improve Peru’s healthcare system performance.MethodsUsing estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD), Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (2019), we assessed mortality and disability in Peru from 1990 to 2019. We report demographic and epidemiologic trends in terms of population, life expectancy at birth (LE), mortality, incidence, prevalence, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) caused by the major diseases and risk factors in Peru. Finally, we compared Peru with 16 countries in the Latin American (LA) region.ResultsThe Peruvian population reached 33.9 million inhabitants (49.9% women) in 2019. From 1990 to 2019, LE at birth increased from 69.2 (95% uncertainty interval 67.8–70.3) to 80.3 (77.2–83.2) years. This increase was driven by the decline in under-5 mortality (−80.7%) and mortality from infectious diseases in older age groups (+60 years old). The number of DALYs in 1990 was 9.2 million (8.5–10.1) and reached 7.5 million (6.1–9.0) in 2019. The proportion of DALYs due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) increased from 38.2% in 1990 to 67.9% in 2019. The all-ages and age-standardized DALYs rates and YLLs rates decreased, but YLDs rates remained constant. In 2019, the leading causes of DALYs were neonatal disorders, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), ischemic heart disease, road injuries, and low back pain. The leading risk factors associated with DALYs in 2019 were undernutrition, high body mass index, high fasting plasma glucose, and air pollution. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Peru experienced one of the highest LRIs-DALYs rates in the LA region.ConclusionIn the last three decades, Peru experienced significant improvements in LE and child survival and an increase in the burden of NCDs and associated disability. The Peruvian healthcare system must be redesigned to respond to this epidemiological transition. The new design should aim to reduce premature deaths and maintain healthy longevity, focusing on effective coverage and treatment of NCDs and reducing and managing the related disability.

Abstract: Summary: Background: The objective of this study is to investigate the trends of exposure and burden attributable to the four main metabolic risk factors, including high systolic blood pressure (SBP), high fasting plasma glucose (FPG), high body-mass index (BMI), and high low-density lipoproteins cholesterol (LDL) in North Africa and the Middle East from 1990 to 2019. Methods: The data were retrieved from Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. Summary exposure value (SEV) was used for risk factor exposure. Burden attributable to each risk factor was incorporated in the population attributable fraction to estimate the total attributable deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Findings: While age-standardized death rate (ASDR) attributable to high-LDL and high-SBP decreased by 26.5% (18.6–35.2) and 23.4% (15.9–31.5) over 1990–2019, respectively, high-BMI with 5.1% (−9.0–25.9) and high-FPG with 21.4% (7.0–37.4) change, grew in ASDR. Moreover, age-standardized DALY rate attributed to high-LDL and high-SBP declined by 30.2% (20.9–39.0) and 25.2% (16.8–33.9), respectively. The attributable age-standardized DALY rate of high-BMI with 8.3% (−6.5–28.8) and high-FPG with 27.0% (14.3–40.8) increase, had a growing trend. Age-standardized SEVs of high-FPG, high-BMI, high-SBP, and high-LDL increased by 92.4% (82.8–103.3), 76.0% (58.9–99.3), 10.4% (3.8–18.0), and 5.5% (4.3–7.1), respectively. Interpretation: The burden attributed to high-SBP and high-LDL decreased during the 1990–2019 period in the region, while the attributable burden of high-FPG and high-BMI increased. Alarmingly, exposure to all four risk factors increased in the past three decades. There has been significant heterogeneity among the countries in the region regarding the trends of exposure and attributable burden. Urgent action is required at the individual, community, and national levels in terms of introducing effective strategies for prevention and treatment that account for local and socioeconomic factors. Abstract: Summary: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted gaps in health surveillance systems, disease prevention, and treatment globally. Among the many factors that might have led to these gaps is the issue of the financing of national health systems, especially in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), as well as a robust global system for pandemic preparedness. We aimed to provide a comparative assessment of global health spending at the onset of the pandemic; characterise the amount of development assistance for pandemic preparedness and response disbursed in the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic; and examine expectations for future health spending and put into context the expected need for investment in pandemic preparedness. Methods: In this analysis of global health spending between 1990 and 2021, and prediction from 2021 to 2026, we estimated four sources of health spending: development assistance for health (DAH), government spending, out-of-pocket spending, and prepaid private spending across 204 countries and territories. We used the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)'s Creditor Reporting System (CRS) and the WHO Global Health Expenditure Database (GHED) to estimate spending. We estimated development assistance for general health, COVID-19 response, and pandemic preparedness and response using a keyword search. Health spending estimates were combined with estimates of resources needed for pandemic prevention and preparedness to analyse future health spending patterns, relative to need. Findings: In 2019, at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, US$9·2 trillion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 9·1–9·3) was spent on health worldwide. We found great disparities in the amount of resources devoted to health, with high-income countries spending $7·3 trillion (95% UI 7·2–7·4) in 2019; 293·7 times the $24·8 billion (95% UI 24·3–25·3) spent by low-income countries in 2019. That same year, $43·1 billion in development assistance was provided to maintain or improve health. The pandemic led to an unprecedented increase in development assistance targeted towards health; in 2020 and 2021, $1·8 billion in DAH contributions was provided towards pandemic preparedness in LMICs, and $37·8 billion was provided for the health-related COVID-19 response. Although the support for pandemic preparedness is 12·2% of the recommended target by the High-Level Independent Panel (HLIP), the support provided for the health-related COVID-19 response is 252·2% of the recommended target. Additionally, projected spending estimates suggest that between 2022 and 2026, governments in 17 (95% UI 11–21) of the 137 LMICs will observe an increase in national government health spending equivalent to an addition of 1% of GDP, as recommended by the HLIP. Interpretation: There was an unprecedented scale-up in DAH in 2020 and 2021. We have a unique opportunity at this time to sustain funding for crucial global health functions, including pandemic preparedness. However, historical patterns of underfunding of pandemic preparedness suggest that deliberate effort must be made to ensure funding is maintained. Funding: Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Abstract: Background: Reducing the burden of death due to infection is an urgent global public health priority. Previous studies have estimated the number of deaths associated with drug-resistant infections and sepsis and found that infections remain a leading cause of death globally. Understanding the global burden of common bacterial pathogens (both susceptible and resistant to antimicrobials) is essential to identify the greatest threats to public health. To our knowledge, this is the first study to present global comprehensive estimates of deaths associated with 33 bacterial pathogens across 11 major infectious syndromes. Methods: We estimated deaths associated with 33 bacterial genera or species across 11 infectious syndromes in 2019 using methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, in addition to a subset of the input data described in the Global Burden of Antimicrobial Resistance 2019 study. This study included 343 million individual records or isolates covering 11 361 study-location-years. We used three modelling steps to estimate the number of deaths associated with each pathogen: deaths in which infection had a role, the fraction of deaths due to infection that are attributable to a given infectious syndrome, and the fraction of deaths due to an infectious syndrome that are attributable to a given pathogen. Estimates were produced for all ages and for males and females across 204 countries and territories in 2019. 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) were calculated for final estimates of deaths and infections associated with the 33 bacterial pathogens following standard GBD methods by taking the 2·5th and 97·5th percentiles across 1000 posterior draws for each quantity of interest. Findings: From an estimated 13·7 million (95% UI 10·9–17·1) infection-related deaths in 2019, there were 7·7 million deaths (5·7–10·2) associated with the 33 bacterial pathogens (both resistant and susceptible to antimicrobials) across the 11 infectious syndromes estimated in this study. We estimated deaths associated with the 33 bacterial pathogens to comprise 13·6% (10·2–18·1) of all global deaths and 56·2% (52·1–60·1) of all sepsis-related deaths in 2019. Five leading pathogens—Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa—were responsible for 54·9% (52·9–56·9) of deaths among the investigated bacteria. The deadliest infectious syndromes and pathogens varied by location and age. The age-standardised mortality rate associated with these bacterial pathogens was highest in the sub-Saharan Africa super-region, with 230 deaths (185–285) per 100 000 population, and lowest in the high-income super-region, with 52·2 deaths (37·4–71·5) per 100 000 population. S aureus was the leading bacterial cause of death in 135 countries and was also associated with the most deaths in individuals older than 15 years, globally. Among children younger than 5 years, S pneumoniae was the pathogen associated with the most deaths. In 2019, more than 6 million deaths occurred as a result of three bacterial infectious syndromes, with lower respiratory infections and bloodstream infections each causing more than 2 million deaths and peritoneal and intra-abdominal infections causing more than 1 million deaths. Interpretation: The 33 bacterial pathogens that we investigated in this study are a substantial source of health loss globally, with considerable variation in their distribution across infectious syndromes and locations. Compared with GBD Level 3 underlying causes of death, deaths associated with these bacteria would rank as the second leading cause of death globally in 2019; hence, they should be considered an urgent priority for intervention within the global health community. Strategies to address the burden of bacterial infections include infection prevention, optimised use of antibiotics, improved capacity for microbiological analysis, vaccine development, and improved and more pervasive use of available vaccines. These estimates can be used to help set priorities for vaccine need, demand, and development. This is an Open Access article under the CC BY 4.0 licenseBackground: Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a common urological disease affecting older men worldwide, but comprehensive data about the global, regional, and national burden of benign prostatic hyperplasia and its trends over time are scarce. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, we estimated global trends in, and prevalence of, benign prostatic hyperplasia and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia, in 21 regions and 204 countries and territories from 2000 to 2019. Methods: This study was conducted with GBD 2019 analytical and modelling strategies. Primary prevalence data came from claims from three countries and from hospital inpatient encounters from 45 locations. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR version 2.1, was used to estimate the age-specific, location-specific, and year-specific prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Age-standardised prevalence was calculated by the direct method using the GBD reference population. Years lived with disability (YLDs) due to benign prostatic hyperplasia were estimated by multiplying the disability weight by the symptomatic proportion of the prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Because we did not estimate years of life lost associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) equalled YLDs. The final estimates were compared across Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintiles. The 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) were estimated as the 25th and 975th of 1000 ordered draws from a bootstrap distribution. Findings: Globally, there were 94·0 million (95% UI 73·2 to 118) prevalent cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia in 2019, compared with 51·1 million (43·1 to 69·3) cases in 2000. The age-standardised prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia was 2480 (1940 to 3090) per 100 000 people. Although the global number of prevalent cases increased by 70·5% (68·6 to 72·7) between 2000 and 2019, the global age-standardised prevalence remained stable (–0·770% [–1·56 to 0·0912]). The age-standardised prevalence in 2019 ranged from 6480 (5130 to 8080) per 100 000 in eastern Europe to 987 (732 to 1320) per 100 000 in north Africa and the Middle East. All five SDI quintiles observed an increase in the absolute DALY burden between 2000 and 2019. The most rapid increases in the absolute DALY burden were seen in the middle SDI quintile (94·7% [91·8 to 97·6]), the low-middle SDI quintile (77·3% [74·1 to 81·2]), and the low SDI quintile (77·7% [72·9 to 83·2]). Between 2000 and 2019, age-standardised DALY rates changed less, but the three lower SDI quintiles (low, low-middle, and middle) saw small increases, and the two higher SDI quintiles (high and high-middle SDI) saw small decreases. Interpretation: The absolute burden of benign prostatic hyperplasia is rising at an alarming rate in most of the world, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries that are currently undergoing rapid demographic and epidemiological changes. As more people are living longer worldwide, the absolute burden of benign prostatic hyperplasia is expected to continue to rise in the coming years, highlighting the importance of monitoring and planning for future health system strain. Abstract: Background: The health risks associated with moderate alcohol consumption continue to be debated. Small amounts of alcohol might lower the risk of some health outcomes but increase the risk of others, suggesting that the overall risk depends, in part, on background disease rates, which vary by region, age, sex, and year. Methods: For this analysis, we constructed burden-weighted dose-response relative risk curves across 22 health outcomes to estimate the theoretical minimum risk exposure level (TMREL) and non-drinker equivalence (NDE), the consumption level at which the health risk is equivalent to that of a non-drinker, using disease rates from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2020 for 21 regions, including 204 countries and territories, by 5-year age group, sex, and year for individuals aged 15-95 years and older from 1990 to 2020. Based on the NDE, we quantified the population consuming harmful amounts of alcohol. Findings: The burden-weighted relative risk curves for alcohol use varied by region and age. Among individuals aged 15-39 years in 2020, the TMREL varied between 0 (95% uncertainty interval 0-0) and 0·603 (0·400-1·00) standard drinks per day, and the NDE varied between 0·002 (0-0) and 1·75 (0·698-4·30) standard drinks per day. Among individuals aged 40 years and older, the burden-weighted relative risk curve was J-shaped for all regions, with a 2020 TMREL that ranged from 0·114 (0-0·403) to 1·87 (0·500-3·30) standard drinks per day and an NDE that ranged between 0·193 (0-0·900) and 6·94 (3·40-8·30) standard drinks per day. Among individuals consuming harmful amounts of alcohol in 2020, 59·1% (54·3-65·4) were aged 15-39 years and 76·9% (73·0-81·3) were male. Interpretation: There is strong evidence to support recommendations on alcohol consumption varying by age and location. Stronger interventions, particularly those tailored towards younger individuals, are needed to reduce the substantial global health loss attributable to alcohol. Abstract: Objective: To carry out measurements of the Hg levels and personal exposure in Turkish dental clinics, and to evaluate possible adverse effects on the CNS in dental personnel. Setting: Five dental clinics (1 private, 4 public) in Erzurum, Turkey. Subjects and methods: 43, Hg vapour-exposed dental staff were examined and 43 hospital employees with no known exposure to Hg acted as the control group. Hg concentrations in plasma and urine were analysed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Possible effects on the central nervous system (CNS) were estimated by neuropsychological tests (Weschler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) and Verbal Test of Memory Processes (VTMP)) and two self-administered questionnaires (Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)). Results: The dental staff group had higher whole blood (B-Hg) and urine (U-Hg) Hg levels than the control group. The mean B-Hg value was 2.18nmol/l and U-Hg was 1.17nmol/mmol creatinine. U-Hg had an inverse relationship with logical memory (in WMS-R test) and total retention score (in VTMP test), and a positive relationship with increased scores of Anxiety and Psychoticism (in SCL-90-R). Conclusion: These results may represent long-term consequences of low Hg exposure. In dentistry, to decrease toxic effects, proper Hg hygiene should be practiced by all dental health care workers.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to examine the attitudes of hospital staff toward major mental diseases: schizophrenia and depression. Negative attitudes were common among all of the hospital staff, and were more common among academicians, resident physicians and nurses. Causes of attitude variations were discussed. Background: Attitudes of hospital staff are important for admission, early diagnosis and treatment, and the rehabilitation process of mentally ill patients. Aims: The main objective of this study was to investigate and compare hospital workers' attitudes toward and knowledge of schizophrenia and depression. Methods: In 2001, a total of 160 hospital staff (40 academicians, 40 resident physicians, 40 nurses and 40 hospital employees) in a teaching hospital were interviewed with a questionnaire. The questionnaire included items about background information, a one-paragraph vignette, questions on social distance and expected burden, recognition of mental illness, hospitalization, prognostic outcome, and to whom and where the patient should be admitted. Results: Although academicians, resident physicians, and nurses have sufficient knowledge about schizophrenia and depression, the frequency of their negative attitudes towards mentally ill subjects was more than that for uneducated hospital employees. Conclusions: It was commented that this difference might be as a result of negative effects of the medical education system.

13. Changes in the Size Distribution of Steroidogenic and Non-steroidogenic Bovine Luteal Cells During the Oestrus Cycle

Abstract: WOS: 000168884800018 The aim of this study was to investigate the size distribution of steroidogenic and non-steroidogenic luteal cells throughout the oestrus cycle. Twelve corpora lutea collected from different stages of the oestrus cycle were used. Corpora lutea collected from nonpregnant cows were dissociated into single-cell suspensions by enzyme treatments. Cells were stained for 3 beta -hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta -HSD) activity, a marker for steroidogenic cells. The sizes of 3 beta -HSD positive (steroidogenic) and negative cells (nonsteroidogenic) were measured with an ocular micrometer. Very small cells (m) stained negative for 3 beta -HSD activity were presumed to be primarily endothelial cells, fibroblast and blood cells. The other cells were presumed to be luteal cells covering a wide spectrum of size ranging from 10 to 40 mum in diameter. 3 beta -HSD positive cells smaller than 10 mum were not observed, and cells larger than 25 mum were rare. The cells obtained from early and late stages of the luteal phase contained more non-steroidogenic cells than the cells obtained from the mid-luteal phase. However, the cells derived from early luteal stage contained more small cells (10-22 mum) than the cells obtained from the rest of the cycle. There were significant differences (p < 0.001) in both 3-HSD positive and 3 beta -HSD negative cell sizes during the oestrus cycle. This study indicates that the size distributions of both steroidogenic and non-steroidogenic luteal cells change as the age of the corpus luteum increases.

Abstract: WOS: 000294318900011 The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) on some biochemical and hematological parameters, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidant enzymes in pregnant rat model of preeclampsia induced by L-w-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). Thirty two pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 equal groups as control, L-NAME (50 mg/kg bw/day), MgSO4 (600 mg/kg bw/day) or L-NAME + MgSO4 (1-4) given groups on the 11(th) day of the pregnancy in their drinking water. The increased blood pressure (BP) was detected on the 12(th) and 19(th) days of pregnancy. Blood samples were collected on the 19(th) day to determine blood oxidative status, some biochemical and hematological parameters. L-NAME decreased erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity, plasma total protein level and increased erythrocyte catalase and glutathion peroxidase activities, BP, plasma malondialdehyde, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, alkaline phophatase activity and white blood cell counts compared to control group. While MgSO4 decreased aspartate amino transferase and alanine amino transferase activities and calcium level, it increased magnesium level compared to control group. Increased BP, plasma cholesterol levels, erythrocyte catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities by L-NAME were decreased by the addition of MgSO4. Abstract: The aim of the study was to find out the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and to determine the optimum cut-off value for postnatal depression. Validation of the Turkish version of the EPDS was conducted on a sample of 341 women who were within their first postpartum year. Structured Diagnostic Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders was used as the gold standard test, and receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to evaluate test performance of the EPDS. The study of sensitivity, specificity and predictive values versus SCID-I indicated a cut-off score of 12.5 as the best (sensitivity: 75.5, specificity: 71.5). Positive predictive value was 30.3% and negative predictive value was 94.5%. Cronbach’s alpha value was calculated as 0.72. It was concluded that: (1) values for the validity were respectable, but not excellent; (2) the scale needs to be improved for use in the Turkish population; and (3) the high prevalence of postnatal depression found in this study may be a function of the low validity of the test.

16. Effects of increases in vitamin C supplementation in the laying hen rations on serum concentrations of vitamin C and vitamin A

Abstract: WOS: 000179465800003 This study was carried out to determine the effects of layer rations containing 0, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg vitamin C on vitamin C and vitamin A concentrations in serum of hens. A total of 96 commercial hens (28 weeks of age) were used in present experiments. There were a control and three treatment groups, each containing 24 hens. The experimental period lasted 10 weeks. Serum vitamin C and vitamin A concentrations were determined three times at 30, 34 and 38 weeks of ages. Serum vitamin C and vitamin A concentrations increased with increasing amounts of vitamin C in rations. During the experiment, serum vitamin C concentration was increased significantly (p < 0.05) by the addition of 200 mg/kg vitamin C, and serum vitamin A concentration was increased significantly in all groups (p < 0.05). It has been concluded that vitamin C protected vitamin A against oxidation and increased serum vitamin A levels in parallel with increased serum vitamin C.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Violence against physicians is a major problem worldwide. The aim of this research is to determine the level of physical and verbal violence against physicians in Turkey by means of meta-analysis. METHODS: Research within the scope of physical violence and verbal violence against doctors in Turkey between the years 2000-2019 that examined the systematic screening studies have been conducted in accordance with the strategy literature. Quality evaluation was performed in the study and the studies were analyzed with meta-analysis method. Cochrane Q statistic and I² were calculated to assess whether the results of the study were heterogeneous. In the meta-analysis, the random effects model and Fisher z statistics were used as the effect type. The publication bias funnel graph was analyzed with Egger's linear regression test and Begg and Mazumdar rank correlation statistics. RESULTS: In the framework of the PRISMA flow diagram, the results of the study were shown by 18 plot for physical violence and 17 for meta-analysis by forest plot. 18. Analysis of Bed Use Performance of Pediatrics Clinics in Turkey

Abstract: AbstractIntroduction: One of the most important sources of hospitals is patient beds. About 14% of the total patients in Turkey are allocated clinical pediatrics. Efficient and efficient use of the allocated beds significantly affects hospital performance. The study is aimed to analyze pediatric clinics bed use performance by using Pabon Lasso diagram in Turkey.Materials and Methods: Pabon Lasso Model was used to determine the bed use performance levels of pediatric clinics. In this model, hospital performance indicators are used as variables; bed occupancy rate (BOR), bed turnover rate (BTR) and average length of stay (ALS). Research data were obtained from the Statistical Report of Public Hospitals Unions. Data were analyzed using MS Excel, SPSS 22 software and Pabon Lasso graph.Results: According to the results obtained, bed performance indicators of pediatric clinics which BOR, BRT and ALS were found to be on average 46.2, 5.7 and 41.8, respectively. According to the model, pediatric surgery and urology and pediatric health and diseases clinics have the highest bed performance, while the most inefficient clinics are pediatric metabolic diseases, pediatric rheumatology and pediatric neurology. In the study, 38% of pediatric clinics are in the third most fertile region, while 44% of the first inefficient region is located.Conclusion: Hospitals are the most important element of a health system. Most of the resources allocated to the health sector are allocated to hospitals. Hence, we can say that hospitals are the most basic and most expensive component of health systems. The bed efficiency of hospitals has a significant impact on health system performance. The bed occupancy rate of the pediatric clinic was determined to be 46% in Turkey. This rate is lower than the average general hospital in Turkey. Therefore, in order for pediatric clinics to provide quality and cost-effective health care, bed performance should be evaluated regularly. Bu araştırmanın amacı, Türkiye’de pediatri kliniklerinin yatak kullanım performansını Pabon Lasso Modeli (PLM) ile analiz etmektir. Gereç ve Yöntem: Araştırmada pediatri kliniklerinin yatak kullanım performans düzeylerini tespit edebilmek için Pabon Lasso Modeli (PLM) kullanılmıştır. PLM’nde değişken olarak hastane performans göstergeleri olan; yatak doluluk oranı (YDO), yatak devir hızı (YDH) ve ortalama kalış süresi (OKS) alınmıştır. Araştırma verileri Kamu Hastane Birlikleri İstatistik Raporundan temin edilmiştir. Verilerin analizinde MS Excel, SPSS 22 software and Pabon Lasso grafiği kullanılmıştır.Bulgular: Araştırma sonuçlara göre, yatak performans göstergeleri olan YDO, OKS ve YDH’nın pediatrik kliniklerde ortalaması sırasıyla 46,2, 5,7 ve 41,8 olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Modele göre yatak performansı en yüksek klinikler pediatrik cerrahi ve üroloji ile çocuk sağlığı ve hastalıkları iken en verimsiz klinikler ise çocuk metabolizma hastalıkları, çocuk romatolojisi ve çocuk nörolojisi olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Araştırmada pediatrik kliniklerin % 38'i en verimli bölge olan üçüncü bölgede yer alır iken en verimsiz bölge olan birinci bölgede pediatrik kliniklerin %44’ü yer almaktadır.Sonuç: Hastaneler bir sağlık sisteminin en önemli unsudur. Sağlık sektörüne tahsis edilen kaynakların çoğu hastanelere tahsis edilmektedir. Dolayısıyla, hastanelerin sağlık sistemlerinin en temel ve en pahalı bileşeni olduğunu söyleyebiliriz. Hastanelerin yatak verimliliğinin sağlık sistemi performansı üzerinde önemli bir etkisi vardır. Türkiye'de pediatrik kliniklerin yatak doluluk oranı %46 olarak tespit edilmiştir. Bu oran Türkiye’deki genel hastane ortalamasından oldukça düşüktür. Bu nedenle, pediatrik kliniklerin kaliteli ve düşük maliyetli sağlık hizmeti sunabilmesi için yatak performansı düzenli olarak değerlendirilmelidir. 19. EVALUATION OF BED UTILIZATION PERFORMANCE OF HOSPITAL DEPARTMENTS IN TURKEY WITH GREY RELATED ANALYSIS

Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyze the bed utilization performance of hospital departments in Turkey with grey relational method. Grey relational analysis was used to determine the bed utılization performance levels of surgery and internal clinics in Turkey. In this study, hospital performance indicators are used as variables; bed occupancy rate, bed turnover rate and average length of stay. Research data were obtained from the Statistical Report of Public Hospitals Unions. Data were analyzed using MS Excel, SPSS 18 software. In this study, bed occupancy rate (%), average length of stay (day) and bed turnover rate performance indicators of clinics were found to be 67.3; 5.6 and 63.4, respectively. According to the grey relational analysis, the section with the most desirable characteristics represents the sections with the highest scores. The highest grey relational grade score was found to be obstetrics and gynecology (0.904) and the lowest score dermatology (0.474) departments. In multidimensional analysis, it was evaluated in two categories as efficient and inefficient in evaluating the bed use performance of departments. Hospitals are the most resource-consuming element of a health care system. The hospital's bed utilization performance has a positive impact on the hospital's financial success. A significant portion of the cost of operating in hospitals is due to unnecessary patient hospitalization. In order to reduce hospital costs, patient beds need to be used optimally. Hence, hospital managers should regularly audit bed utilization.

Abstract: Sağlık kuruluşlarında hasta güvenliğinin sağlanması dünya genelinde öncelikli en önemli konulardan biri haine gelmiştir. Sağlık alanında farklı disiplinlerde yapılan çalışma sonuçları, ilaç hatalarına yol açan etmenlerin çoğunluğunun ilaç yönetim süreci ile ilgili olduğunu göstermektedir. Hastanelerde ilaç yönetim sistemlerine ihtiyaç duyulmasının sebebi hasta güvenliğini tehdit edecek ilaç hatalarını ve israfı önlemek, verimliliği artırmak ve maliyet tasarrufu sağlamaktır. Bu araştırmanın amacı otomatik ilaç dağıtım sistemi sağlık teknolojisi kullanımının hastaneler açısından güçlü, zayıf yönleri ve fırsat, tehdit unsurlarını tespit etmektir. Araştırma nitel araştırma tekniği ile yapılmıştır. Araştırmada nitel veriler ise yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniği ile toplanmıştır. Görüşmede hastane yöneticileri, ilaç yönetim sistemi üretici temsilcileri, eczacı, hemşire, satın alma ve işletme müdürleri ile görüşülmüştür. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre ilaç yönetim sistemi satın alınmasının en güçlü yönleri; hasta güvenliğini sağlaması, ilaç hatalarını, ilaç israfını ve işgücü maliyetini düşürmesi; zayıf yönü ise yatırım maliyetinin yüksek olmasıdır. İlaç yönetim sisteminin hastanelere sağladığı fırsatlar; globalleşme, büyüme, etkin ve verimli kaynak kullanımı, tehdit unsurlarının ise otomasyon sistemi altyapısı düşük olan hastanelerde bekleme süresinin yüksek olması, son kullanıcıların sisteme adapte olmakta güçlük çekmesi ve sisteme ilaç yükleme esnasında zaman kaybının yaşanması olarak tespit edilmiştir

21. Differential sperm expenditure reveals a possible role for post‐copulatory sexual selection in a lekking moth

Abstract: Abstract Male reproductive success in the lesser wax moth Achroia grisella is strongly determined by pre‐copulatory mate choice, during which females choose among males aggregated in small leks based on the attractiveness of ultrasonic songs. Nothing is known about the potential of post‐copulatory mechanisms to affect male reproductive success. However, there is evidence that females at least occasionally remate with a second male and that males are unable to produce ejaculates quickly after a previous copulation. Here we investigated the effects of mating history on ejaculate size and demonstrate that the number of transferred sperm significantly decreased from first (i.e., virgin) to second (i.e., nonvirgin) copulation within individual males. For males of identical age, the number of sperm transferred was higher in virgin than in nonvirgin copulations, too, demonstrating that mating history, is responsible for the decrease in sperm numbers transferred and not the concomitant age difference. Furthermore, the number of transferred sperm was significantly repeatable within males. The demonstrated variation in ejaculate size both between subsequent copulations as well as among individuals suggests that there is allocation of a possibly limited amount of sperm. Because female fecundity is not limited by sperm availability in this system, post‐copulatory mechanisms, in particular sperm competition, may play a previously underappreciated role in the lesser wax moth mating system.

22. Evaluation of the Pre-Hemolytic Concentrations of beta-, Methyl-beta- and Dimethyl-beta-Cyclodextrin on Dog and Goat Erythrocytes

Abstract: WOS: 000262560800010 beta-Cyclodextrin (beta-CD) is a cage-like molecule consisting of seven glucose units and have appropriate size to form inclusion complexes with many hormones, vitamins and drugs. Due to having very poor aqueous solubility, beta-cyclodextrin is modified chemically for various applications. Experiments were conducted to examine effects of pre-hemolytic concentration of beta-cyclodextrin and its modified derivatives, methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (M beta-CD) and dimethyl-beta-cyclodextrin (DM beta-CD), on the osmotic fragility of dog and goat erythrocytes. Blood samples collected from healthy 10 dogs and 10 goats were analyzed within 5 h of collection. Erythrocyte suspensions were mixed with various concentrations of beta-CD, M beta-CD and DM beta-CD. The mixtures were then incubated for 30 min at 37 degrees C and osmotic fragility of erythrocytes was measured. Incubation of all 3 Cyclo Dextrins (CDs) with erythrocyte suspensions of both species, dog and goat, induced a dose dependent increase in the erythrocyte osmotic fragility (pM beta-CD>beta-CD. Hemolytic doses of these CDs were lower for goat erythrocytes than those of the dog erythrocytes. When beta-CD and its methylated derivatives are even used in pre-hemolytic concentrations, they might also reduce life span of erythrocytes. Due to importance of scientific knowledge on the cellular activity of cyclodextrins and growing number of its potential applications on diagnosis food preparations, our results may help to deal with the hemolytic activity of CDs for in vivo studies.

23. Effects of vitamin C or vitamin e supplementation on Cadmium induced oxidative stress and anaemia in broilers

Abstract: WOS: 000284927100006 The aim of this study was to investigate the possible protective effects of vitamins C and E on lipid peroxidation (LPO), antioxidant systems and erythrocyte parameters in broilers chronically exposed to cadmium (Cd). One day old Ross broiler chickens were assigned to 4 equal groups (n = 12) according to the diet regimen; in the control group, birds received basal standard starter and grower diets, in Cd group they were supplemented with Cd (60 mg/kg) and in the 2 other groups, they were supplemented with Cd and with vitamin C (400 mg/kg) or with vitamin E (250 mg/kg) during the 42 clays long experimental period. The Cd exposition induced an oxidative stress characterised by the significant increase in plasma MDA concentrations coupled to significant decreases in enzyme antioxidant SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase) and GSH-Px (glutathione peroxidase) activities and in plasma vitamin E, beta-carotene and uric acid concentrations. A moderate regenerative anaemia (low haemoglobinemia, erythrocyte name-ration and haematocrit associated with increase of the mean corpuscular volume) was also observed in the Cd group. Treatments with the vitamins C or E significantly reduced the lipid peroxidation but the antioxidant enzyme CAT and GSH-Px activities and vitamin E concentrations were significantly improved only with the vitamin E supplementation. Furthermore, the both types of vitamin supplementation, but particularly with ascorbate, have significantly increased the haemoglobinemia and the erythrocyte counts. These results clearly showed that vitamins C and E alleviate the oxidative effects of Cd at least partially and that the vitamin E exhibits more powerful antioxidant effects whereas vitamin C corrects more efficiently the anaemia. Abstract: WOS: 000225705300008 Knowledge of the adverse effects of cyclodextrins on erythrocytes is important in view of the growing number of their potential applications in food, cosmetic, drug and chemical industries to increase aqueous solubility and stability, and reduce or eliminate the unpleasant taste and smell of many products. The experiment was conducted to examine the effect of pre-haemolytic concentrations of alpha-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins on the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes. Blood samples collected from 8 healthy Turkish Kangal dogs were analysed within 3 It of collection. Erythrocyte suspensions were mixed with various concentrations of alpha-, beta-, or gamma-cyclodextrins. The mixtures were then incubated for 30 min at 37 degreesC and osmotic fragility of erythrocytes was measured. Incubation of the erythrocyte suspensions with the all three cyclodextrins induced a dose-dependent increase in the osmotic fragility of erythrocytes. Initial haemolysis (10%) in alpha-, beta-, and gamma-cyclodextrin treated groups was at 8, 4 and 46 mM cyclodextrin concentrations, respectively. In conclusion, these results indicate that pre-haemolytic concentrations of all three cyclodextrins studied might induce membrane disruption, that may cause removal of membrane components from erythrocytes. When cyclodextrins are even used in a pre-haemolytic concentrations, it might reduce life span of erythrocytes.

Abstract: WOS: 000183981300007 This study was carried out to determine the effects of dietary niacin (0, 250, 500, 1000 and 1500 mg/kg ration) on layer performance. A total of 120 commercial hens (28 weeks of age) were divided in five groups, each containing 24 hens. Feeding period lasted 13 weeks. Hens were fed in groups, with adlibitum access to feed and water. Egg production, feed conversion, egg breaking strength and shell thickness were significantly (P < 0.05) increased, by the treatments. In addition some interior egg quality parameters were affected positively with increased niacin level in the diet (P < 0.05). It was concluded that niacin in the diet may have a positive role in layer performance.

28. A comparative study on the some haematological parameters of sakız, karayaka and crossbred of sakız x karayaka ci sheep

Abstract: This study was conducted to compare the haematological parameters of Sakız male and Karayaka female with crossbred of Sakız X Karayaka male and female sheep. In the present study, 38 healthy sheep (7 male Sakız, 9 female Karayaka, and 15 female and 7 male crossbred sheep) were used. Blood samples obtained from the animals were analysed for erythrocyte (RBC) and leucocyte (WBC) numbers, haemoglobin concentrations (Hb). haematocnt values (PCV), sedimentation rates and percentages ot lymphocytes, neutrophyls, monocytes, eosinophyls and ba-sophyls. Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were also calculated. As a result, in order to establishing normal haematological values of Sakız, Karayaka and crossbred of Sakız X Karayaka sheep, present results also indicate that some of blood parameters of crossbred sheep were dilferenl from the some Turkish sheep breeds. Haematological parameters of crossbreed sheep were most likely similar to Sakız sheep from which 75% of genotype of crossbreed sheep were earn.
