7. Compressing the time series of five dimensional distribution function data from gyrokinetic simulation using principal component analysis

Abstract

Phase space structures are extracted from the time series of five dimensional distribution function data computed by the flux-driven full-f gyrokinetic code GT5D. Principal component analysis (PCA) is applied to reduce the dimensionality and the size of the data. Phase space bases in (𝜑,𝑣∥,𝑤) and the corresponding spatial coefficients (poloidal cross section) are constructed by PCA, where 𝜑, 𝑣∥, and w, respectively, mean the toroidal angle, the parallel velocity, and the perpendicular velocity. It is shown that 83% of the variance of the original five dimensional distribution function can be expressed with 64 principal components, i.e., the compression of the degrees of freedom from 1.3×1012 to 1.4×109. One of the important findings-resulting from the detailed analysis of the contribution of each principal component to the energy flux-deals with avalanche events, which are found to be mostly driven by coherent structures in the phase space, indicating the key role of resonant particles. Another advantage of the proposed analysis is the decoupling of 6D (1D time and 5D phase space) data into the combinations of 3D data which are visible to the human eye.

Abstract

Barely trapped and passing electrons have been recently predicted to strongly enhance the damping rate of Geodesic Acoustic Modes (GAMs) in tokamak plasmas, while keeping their real frequency almost unchanged as compared to the case with adiabatic electrons. In this paper, dedicated gyrokinetic simulations are successfully compared with these analytical predictions. Specifically, the scaling of the GAM damping rate with respect to the ion to electron mass ratio, to the electron to ion temperature ratio, to the safety factor, and to the aspect ratio is recovered in most regions of the relevant parameter space.

Abstract

We earlier developed a novel method to detect translocation of glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) directly, quantitatively and simply using c-MYC epitope-tagged GLUT4 (GLUT4myc) (Kanai F, Nishioka Y, Hayashi H, Kamohara S, Todaka M, Ebina Y:J Biol Chem 268:14523-14526, 1993). We further developed the method to visualize GLUT4myc on the cell surfac by fluorescence microscope using a highly sensitive immunochemical detection system in tissue culture cells stably expressing GLUT4myc. The translocation of GLUT4myc was observed on stimulation with insulin in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, CHO cells and L6 myotubes stably expressing GLUT4myc. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), norepinephrine and bradykinin also triggered GLUT4 translocation in CHO-GLUT4myc cells stably expressing each receptor. To observe the distribution of GLUT4 and actin after insulin treatment, double staining for GLUT4myc and actin was performed. Translocated GLUT4myc on the cell surface was co-localized with rearranged actin in CHO cells and L6 myotubes. This result suggests that a correlation exists between GLUT4 translocation and actin rearrangement.

34. Dose requirements for propofol anaesthesia for dental treatment for autistic patients compared with intellectually impaired patients.

Abstract

We had clinical grounds to suspect that patients with autism had greater propofol requirements during dental procedures than patients with intellectual impairment without autism. This hypothesis was tested by an audit of a standard anaesthetic technique. The audit was approved by our Hospital Ethics Committee. We compared the propofol requirements and effect using a standardised protocol during dental treatment in 56 autistic patients (age range three to 35 years) and 56 intellectually impaired patients (age range four to 42 years). Patients in each disability group were divided into three subgroups by age: six years or younger, seven to 19 years and 20 years or older. Combative patients received oral midazolam premedication, other patients received a single intravenous bolus of midazolam at induction. Otherwise, standardised propofol boluses and infusion were the only anaesthetic agents used. The propofol infusion rates of the intellectually impaired group showed significant decline with age (propofol rate of requirement mg x kg(-1) x h(-1), mean [SD]): < six years 13.6 (3.6), seven to 19 years 9.5 (3.0) (P = 0.008 cf < six years group), > 19 years group 8.5 (2.4) (P = 0.001 cf < six years group). The propofol requirement was greater in the autism group than in the intellectual disability group, and the proportion of the cases where bolus propofol administration was needed after induction was significantly higher in the autistic patient group than in the intellectually impaired patients (P < 0.002). This suggests that autistic patients have greater propofol requirements for anaesthesia during ordinary dental treatment compared with intellectually impaired patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
