While X-ray Spectroscopy, Timing and Imaging have improved verymuch since 1962, when the first astronomical non-solar source was discovered, especially with the launch of Newton/X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission, Rossi/X-ray Timing Explorer and Chandra/Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility, the progress of X-ray polarimetry has been meager. This is in part due to the lack of sensitive polarization detectors, in part due to the fate of approved missions and in part because the celestial X-ray sources appeared less polarized than expected. Only one positive measurement has been available until now. Indeed the eight Orbiting Solar Observatory measured the polarization of the Crab nebula in the 70s. The advent of techniques of microelectronics allowed for designing a detector based on the photoelectric effect in gas in an energy range where the optics are efficient in focusing X-rays. Herewe describe the Instrument, which is the major contribution of the Italian collaboration to the SmallExplorer mission called IXPE, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, which will be flown in late 2021. The instrument, is composed of three Detector Units, based on this technique, and a Detector Service Unit. Three Mirror Modules provided by Marshall Space Flight Center focus X-rays onto the detectors. In the following we will show the technological choices, their scientific motivation and the results from the calibration of the Instrument. IXPE will perform imaging, timing and energy resolved polarimetry in the 2-8 keV energy band opening this window of X-ray astronomy to tens of celestial sources of almost all classes., 25 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables (accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal)

We present a data processing algorithm for angular reconstruction and event selection applied to 2-D photoelectron track images from X-ray polarimeters. The method reconstructs the initial emission angle of a photoelectron from the initial portion of the track, which is obtained by continuously cutting a track until the image moments or number of pixels fall below tunable thresholds. In addition, event selection which rejects round tracks quantified with eccentricity and circularity is performed so that polarimetry sensitivity considering a trade-off between the modulation factor and signal acceptance is maximized. The modulation factors with applying track selection are 26 . 6 ± 0 . 4 , 46 . 1 ± 0 . 4 , 62 . 3 ± 0 . 4 , and 61 . 8 ± 0 . 3 % at 2.7, 4.5, 6.4, and 8.0 keV, respectively, using the same data previously analyzed by Iwakiri et al. (2016), where the corresponding numbers are 26 . 9 ± 0 . 4 , 43 . 4 ± 0 . 4 , 54 . 4 ± 0 . 3 , and 59 . 1 ± 0 . 3 %. The method improves polarimeter sensitivity by 5%–10% at the high energy end of the band previously presented (Iwakiri et al. 2016).

This paper presents a data processing algorithm with machine learning for polarization extraction and event selection applied to photoelectron track images taken with X-ray polarimeters. The method uses a convolutional neural network (CNN) classification to predict the azimuthal angle and 2-D position of the initial photoelectron emission from a 2-D track image projected along the X-ray incident direction. Two CNN models are demonstrated with data sets generated by a Monte Carlo simulation: one has a commonly used loss function calculated by the cross entropy and the other has an additional loss term to penalize nonuniformity for an unpolarized modulation curve based on the $H$-test, which is used for periodic signal search in X-ray/$\gamma$-ray astronomy. The modulation curve calculated by the former model with unpolarized data has several irregular features, which can be canceled out by unfolding the angular response or simulating the detector rotation. On the other hand, the latter model can predict a flat modulation curve with a residual systematic modulation down to $\lesssim1$%. Both models show almost the same modulation factors and position accuracy of less than 2 pixel (or 240 $\mu$m) for all four test energies of 2.7, 4.5, 6.4, and 8.0 keV. In addition, event selection is performed based on probabilities from the CNN to maximize the polarization sensitivity considering a trade-off between the modulation factor and signal acceptance. Gas electron multipliers with a liquid crystal polymer insulator (LCP-GEMs) can be employed as X-ray polarimeters in several satellite missions in low-earth orbit. To evaluate their resistance to radiation, LCP-GEMs were exposed to Fe ion and proton beams from the heavy-ion accelerator facility HIMAC, and the gas gain was monitored. The LCP-GEMs survived 14.4-year-equivalent irradiation by fully stripped Fe ions with an energy of 500 MeV nuc-1, which simulated galactic cosmic-ray ions. We also studied the degradation of the insulator layer of the LCP-GEMs by irradiation with 160 MeV protons to simulate geomagnetically trapped protons. After irradiation with protons for 31.6 years equivalent, no significant change in gain was observed.

An X-ray compact source was discovered with Chandra in a supernova remnant (SNR) N23, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The compact source (CXOU J050552.3-680141) is seen in only the hard band (> 2 keV) image of N23, while the soft band image (< 2 keV) shows diffuse emission of the SNR, with an extent of ~60 arcsec times ~80 arcsec. The compact source is located at almost the center of N23, and there is no identifiable object for the source from previous observations at any other wavelength. The source spectrum is best explained by a power-law model with a photon index of 2.2 (1.9-2.7) and an absorption-corrected luminosity of 1.0 x 10^34 ergs s^-1 in the 0.5--10 keV band for a distance of 50 kpc. Neither pulsation nor time variability of the source was detected with this observation with a time resolution of 3.2 sec. These results correspond with those of Hughes et al. (2006) who carried out analysis independently around the same time as our work. Based on information from the best-fit power-law model, we suggest that the source emission is most likely from a rotation-powered pulsar and/or a pulsar wind nebula. It is generally inferred that the progenitor of N23 is a core-collapsed massive star. Fine-pitch gas electron multiplier (GEM) foils have been produced for cosmic X-ray polarimeters using a carbon dioxide laser etching technique. The finest hole pitch of the foil which can be produced repeatedly is 50 μ m and the smallest hole diameter is 30 μ m . The electron amplification factor was measured as a function of applied voltage. The behavior of the factor is almost the same as the 140 μ m -pitch standard foil fabricated by CERN. Our GEMs had no rate-dependent gain instability, which is expected of the GEMs having holes of good cylindrical geometry. The amplification factor of the 50 μ m foil in a mixture of 70% argon and 30% carbon dioxide reaches about 5000 without any micro-discharge at a voltage of 570 V between foil electrodes.

We have developed a gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) containing a single-layered foil of a gas electron multiplier (GEM) to open up a new window on cosmic X-ray polarimetry in the 2–10 keV band. The micro-pattern TPC polarimeter in combination with the Scalable Readout System produced by the RD51 collaboration has been built as an engineering model to optimize detector parameters and improve polarimeter sensitivity. The polarimeter was characterized with unpolarized X-rays from an X-ray generator in a laboratory and polarized X-rays on the BL32B2 beamline at the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility. Preliminary results show that the polarimeter has a comparable modulation factor to a prototype of the flight one.

PolariS (Polarimetry Satellite) is a Japanese small satellite mission dedicated to polarimetry of X-ray and γ-ray sources. The primary aim of the mission is to perform wide band X-ray (4-80 keV) polarimetry of sources brighter than 10 mCrab. For this purpose, Polaris employs three hard X-ray telescopes and two types of focal plane imaging polarimeters. PolariS observations will measure the X-ray polarization for tens of sources including extragalactic ones mostly for the first time. The second purpose of the mission is γ-ray polarimetry of transient sources, such as γ-ray bursts. Wide field polarimeters based on similar concept as that used in the IKAROS/GAP but with higher sensitivity, i.e., polarization measurement of 10 bursts per year, will be employed.

We report a Monte-Carlo estimation of the in-orbit performance of a cosmic X-ray polarimeter designed to be installed on the focal plane of a small satellite. The simulation uses GEANT for the transport of photons and energetic particles and results from Magboltz for the transport of secondary electrons in the detector gas. We validated the simulation by comparing spectra and modulation curves with actual data taken with radioactive sources and an X-ray generator. We also estimated the in-orbit background induced by cosmic radiation in low Earth orbit.

We present the gain properties of the gas electron multiplier (GEM) foil in pure dimethyl ether (DME) at 190 Torr. The GEM is one of the micro pattern gas detectors and it is adopted as a key part of the X-ray polarimeter for the GEMS mission. The X-ray polarimeter is a time projection chamber operating in pure DME gas at 190 Torr. We describe experimental results of (1) the maximum gain the GEM can achieve without any discharges, (2) the linearity of the energy scale for the GEM operation, and (3) the two-dimensional gain variation of the active area. First, our experiment with 6.4 keV X-ray irradiation of the whole GEM area demonstrates that the maximum effective gain is 2 x 10(exp 4) with the applied voltage of 580 V. Second, the measured energy scale is linear among three energies of 4.5, 6.4, and 8.0 keV. Third, the two-dimensional gain mapping test derives the standard deviation of the gain variability of 7% across the active area.

Polarimetry is a powerful tool for astrophysical observations that has yet to be exploited in the X-ray band. For satellite-borne and sounding rocket experiments, we have developed a photoelectric gas polarimeter to measure X-ray polarization in the 2–10 keV range utilizing a time projection chamber (TPC) and advanced micro-pattern gas electron multiplier (GEM) techniques. We carried out performance verification of a flight equivalent unit (1/4 model) which was planned to be launched on the NASA Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small Explorer (GEMS) satellite. The test was performed at Brookhaven National Laboratory, National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) facility in April 2013. The polarimeter was irradiated with linearly-polarized monochromatic X-rays between 2.3 and 10.0 keV and scanned with a collimated beam at 5 different detector positions. After a systematic investigation of the detector response, a modulation factor ≥35% above 4 keV was obtained with the expected polarization angle. At energies below 4 keV where the photoelectron track becomes short, diffusion in the region between the GEM and readout strips leaves an asymmetric photoelectron image. A correction method retrieves an expected modulation angle, and the expected modulation factor, ~20% at 2.7 keV. Folding the measured values of modulation through an instrument model gives sensitivity, parameterized by minimum detectable polarization (MDP), nearly identical to that assumed at the preliminary design review (PDR).

The Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small Explorer (GEMS) X-ray polarimeter Instrument (XPI) was designed to measure the polarization of 23 sources over the course of its 9 month mission. The XPI design consists of two telescopes each with a polarimeter assembly at the focus of a grazing incidence mirror. To make sensitive polarization measurements the GEMS Polarimeter Assembly (PA) employed a gas detection system based on a Time Projection Chamber (TPC) technique. Gas detectors are inherently at risk of degraded performance arising from contamination from outgassing of internal detector components or due to loss of gas. This paper describes the design and the materials used to build a prototype of the flight polarimeter with the required GEMS lifetime. We report the results from outgassing measurements of the polarimeter subassemblies and assemblies, enclosure seal tests, life tests, and performance tests that demonstrate that the GEMS lifetime is achievable. Finally we report performance measurements and the lifetime enhancement from the use of a getter.

We show that the expansion of ejecta in Tycho's supernova remnant (SNR) is consistent with a spherically symmetric shell, based on Suzaku measurements of the Doppler broadened X-ray emission lines. All the strong K_alpha line emission show broader widths at the center than at the rim, while the centroid energies are constant across the remnant (except for Ca). This is the pattern expected for Doppler broadening due to expansion of the SNR ejecta in a spherical shell. To determine the expansion velocities of the ejecta, we applied a model for each emission line feature having two Gaussian components separately representing red- and blue-shifted gas, and inferred the Doppler velocity difference between these two components directly from the fitted centroid energy difference. Taking into account the effect of projecting a three-dimensional shell to the plane of the detector, we derived average spherical expansion velocities independently for the K_alpha emission of Si, S, Ar, and Fe, and K_beta of Si. We found that the expansion velocities of Si, S, and Ar ejecta of 4700+/-100 km/s are distinctly higher than that obtained from Fe K_alpha emission, 4000+/-300 km/s, which is consistent with segregation of the Fe in the inner ejecta. The Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) is a new device that amplifies an input electron cloud, while keeping its shape unchanged [1]. We have developed various type GEMs using a laser etching technique. Those GEMs had different geometry (pitch, hole diameter and thickness) and materials (polyimide; PI or liquid crystal polymer; LCP). We have applied the GEMs to a photoelectric polarimeter that measures polarization of X-rays emitted from stellar objects. To obtain the polarization accurately, it is necessary for GEMs to have good uniformity in two-dimension. As a result of gain mapping, the standard deviation of gain variation of our standard GEM was ∼ 5%. Our GEMs showed enough uniformity to detect X-ray polarization. Comparing hole diameter and gain maps of the same region, there was no correlation between these two maps. Comparing maps of different type GEMs, there was no difference among them and PI GEMs were more uniform than LCP ones.

We use \suzaku observations to measure the spatial variation of the Fe K$\alpha$ line with radius in the \tycho supernova remnant. The Fe line widths show a significant decrease from a FWHM value of 210 eV at the center to 130 eV at the rim. Over the same radial range the line center energy remains nearly constant. These observations are consistent with a scenario in which the shell of Fe-emitting ejecta in \tycho is expanding at speeds of 2800--3350 km s$^{-1}$. The minimum line width we measure is still a factor of two larger than expected from a single component plasma emission model. If thermal Doppler broadening is the dominant additional source of broadening, we infer an ion temperature of $(1--3) \times 10^{10}$ K., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, To appear in ApJ Letters

The 3rd Suzaku international Conference "Energetic Cosmos : from Suzaku to ASTRO-H" (June 29-July 2, 2009. Grand Park Otaru Hotel), Otaru, Hokkaido Japan, The Suzaku X-ray satellite observed the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 4258 for a total good exposure time of 100 ks. We present an analysis of the Suzaku XIS data, in which we confirm that the 0.5-2 keV spectra of the interstellar medium (ISM) are well-represented by a two-temperature model. The cool and hot ISM temperatures are 0.23 +/- 0.01 and 0.58 +/- 0.01 keV, respectively. Suzaku's excellent spectral sensitivity enables us to measure the metal abundances of O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe of the ISM for the first time. The resultant abundance pattern of O, Mg, Si, and Fe is consistent with that of the new solar abundance table of Lodders (2003), rather than Anders and Grevesse (1989). We have produced thick-foil and fine-pitch gas electron multipliers (GEMs) using a laser etching technique. To improve production yield we have employed a new material, Liquid Crystal Polymer, instead of polyimide as an insulator layer. The effective gain of the thick-foil GEM with a hole pitch of 140 um, a hole diameter of 70 um, and a thickness of 100 um reached a value of 10^4 at an applied voltage of 720 V. The measured effective gain of the thick-foil and fine-pitch GEM (80 um pitch, 40 um diameter, and 100 um thick) was similar to that of the thick-foil GEM. The gain stability was measured for the thick-foil and fine-pitch GEM, showing no significant increase or decrease as a function of elapsed time from applying the high voltage. The gain stability over 3 h of operation was about 0.5%. Gain mapping across the GEM showed a good uniformity with a standard deviation of about 4%. The distribution of hole diameters across the GEM was homogeneous with a standard deviation of about 3%. A Suzaku observation of a giant radio galaxy, 3C 326, which has a physical size of about 2 Mpc, was conducted on 2008 January 19 -- 21. In addition to several X-ray sources, diffuse emission was significantly detected associated with its west lobe, but the east lobe was contaminated by an unidentified X-ray source WARP J1552.4+2007. After careful evaluation of the X-ray and Non X-ray background, the 0.4 -- 7 keV X-ray spectrum of the west lobe is described by a power-law model. The photon index and 1 keV flux density was derived as $1.82_{-0.24}^{+0.26}\pm0.04$ and $19.4_{-3.2}^{+3.3}\pm 3.0$ nJy, respectively, where the first and second errors represent the statistical and systematic ones. The diffuse X-rays were attributed to be inverse Compton radiation by the synchrotron radio electrons scattering off the cosmic microwave background photons. This radio galaxy is the largest among those with lobes detected through inverse Compton X-ray emission. A comparison of the radio to X-ray fluxes yields the energy densities of electron and magnetic field as $u_e = (2.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-13}$ ergs/cm3 and $u_m = (1.2_{-0.1}^{+0.2}\pm 0.2) \times 10^{-14}$ ergs/cm3, respectively. We searched for evidence of line emission around 4keV from the northwestern rim of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 using Suzaku XIS data. Several papers have reported the detection of an emission line around 4.1keV from this region of the sky. This line would arise from K-band fluorescence by Sc, the immediate decay product of 44Ti. We performed spectral analysis for the entire portion of the NW rim of the remnant within the XIS field of view, as well as various regions corresponding to regions of published claims of line emission. We found no line emission around 4.1keV anywhere, and are able to set a restrictive upper limit to the X-ray flux: 1.1x10^-6 s^-1 cm^-2 for the entire field. For every region, our flux upper limit falls below that of the previously claimed detection. Therefore, we conclude that, to date, no definite X-ray line feature from Sc-K emission has been detected in the NW rim of RX J0852.0-4622. Our negative-detection supports the recent claim that RX J0852-4622 is neither young (1700--4000 yr) nor nearby(~750 pc)., Comment: Published in PASJ

A gas electron multiplier (GEM) is a key device for the photoelectric X-ray polarimeters, which will be launched in the near future. Our GEMs have spatial resolution enough for tracking of photoelectrons and low risk of discharge. GEMs need to perform well in all sorts of tolerance tests for space missions before launch. As a result of gain stability test after switching ON/OFF 6500 times repeatedly, our GEM gain variation is within ±2%. This repetition time scale corresponds to 2-year space mission in the Low Earth Orbit. As a result of charged particle (Fe) irradiation to GEM, our GEM survived more than 500 seconds of Fe ion irradiation (flux is 130 cts/cm2/s). This corresponds to 40-year irradiation in space. Thus, we conclude that our GEMs are stable enough for space missions and tolerance against discharge which is caused by charged particles.

We have developed the gas electron multiplier (GEM) for applying to a cosmic X-ray polarimeter. For a space use of the GEM, we performed experiments of charged particles irradiation to the GEM as space environmental tests of cosmic rays. The GEM is irradiated with full-striped iron ions with energy of 500 MeV/n, as a result, we found that even if a particle deposits an energy of ~ 2 MeV in the detector, it has no direct effect on the GEM as long as the particle does not hit the GEM directly. In contrast, every time a particle collides with the GEM, it discharges with a probability of 0.4-40% which depending on the count rate, the applied voltage, and energy losses, but the mass of particles does not matter. The predicted count rate of discharges in the space is low enough, so it is negligible compared with a target object. We also found that an irradiation of charged particles for a certain period causes a destruction of the GEM, but the direct reason remains unclear.

Tycho's supernova remnant was observed by the XIS and HXD instruments onboard the Suzaku satellite on 2006 June 26-29 for 92 ks. The spectrum up to 30 keV was well fitted with a two-component model, consisting of a power-law with photon index of 2.7 and a thermal bremsstrahlung model with temperature of 4.7 keV. The former component can alternatively be modeled as synchrotron emission from a population of relativistic electrons with an estimated roll-off energy of around 1 keV. In the XIS spectra, in addition to the prominent Fe K_alpha line (6.445 keV), we observe for the first time significant K_alpha line emission from the trace species Cr and Mn at energies of 5.48 keV and 5.95 keV, respectively. Faint K_beta lines from Ca (4.56 keV) and Fe (7.11 keV) are also seen. The ionization states of Cr and Mn, based on their line centroids, are estimated to be similar to that of Fe K_alpha (Fe XV or XVI)., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted by PASJ

We present a performance study of a cosmic X-ray polarimeter which is based on the photoelectric effect in gas, and sensitive to a few to 30 keV range. In our polarimeter, the key device would be the 50 μm pitch Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM). We have evaluated the modulation factor using highly polarized X-ray, provided by a synchrotron accelerator. In the analysis, we selected events by the eccentricity of the charge cloud of the photoelectron track. As a result, we obtained the relationship between the selection criteria for the eccentricity and the modulation factors; for example, when we selected the events which have their eccentricity of > 0.95, the polarimeter exhibited with the modulation factor of 0.32. In addition, we estimated the Minimum Detectable Polarization degree (MDP) of Crab Nebula with our polarimeter and found 10 ksec observation is enough to detect the polarization, if we adopt suitable X-ray mirrors.

We have produced various gas electron multiplier foils (GEMs) by using laser etching technique for cosmic X-ray polarimeters. The finest structure GEM we have fabricated has 30 μm-diameter holes on a 50 μm-pitch. The effective gain of the GEM reaches around 5000 at the voltage of 570 V between electrodes. The gain is slightly higher than that of the CERN standard GEM with 70 μm-diameter holes on a 140 μm-pitch. We have fabricated GEMs with thickness of 100 μm which has two times thicker than the standard GEM. The effective gain of the thick-foil GEM is 104 at the applied voltage of 350 V per 50 μm of thickness. The gain is about two orders higher than that of the standard GEM. The remarkable characteristic of the thick-foil GEM is that the effective gain at the beginning of micro-discharge is quite improved. For fabricating the thick-foil GEMs, we have employed new material, liquid crystal polymer (LCP) which has little moisture absorption rate, as an insulator layer instead of polyimide. One of the thick-foil GEM we have fabricated has 8 μm copper layer in the middle of the 100 μm-thick insulator layer. The metal layer in the middle of the foil works as a field-shaper in the multiplication channels, though it slightly decreases the effective gain.
