1. LCA and energy efficiency in buildings: mapping more than twenty years of research

Abstract

Research on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is being conducted in various sectors, from analyzing building materials and components to comprehensive evaluations of entire structures. However, reviews of the existing literature have been unable to provide a comprehensive overview of research in this field, leaving scholars without a definitive guideline for future investigations. This paper aims to fill this gap, mapping more than twenty years of research. Using an innovative methodology that combines social network analysis and text mining, the paper examined 8024 scientific abstracts. The authors identified seven key thematic groups, building and sustainability clusters (BSCs). To assess their significance in the broader discourse on building and sustainability, the semantic brand score (SBS) indicator was applied. Additionally, building and sustainability trends were tracked, focusing on the LCA concept. The major research topics mainly relate to building materials and energy efficiency. In addition to presenting an innovative approach to reviewing extensive literature domains, the article also provides insights into emerging and underdeveloped themes, outlining crucial future research directions.

Abstract

Green building concept plays a fundamental role in reducing the use of resources and the impacts on human health and environment, during the whole building life cycle. Therefore, a method to measure the building sustainability rate is crucial for comparing various alternatives in terms of use of different materials, energy resources, production processes to reduce energy consumption and environmental impacts. Many protocols have been proposed to perform buildings’ sustainability evaluation; however, different operators applying these certification tools might need to make hypotheses, even different from each other, to complete the whole procedure. Hence, this work aims to evaluate whether and how the hypotheses formulated by each operator can influence the final certification level. To this end, a Round Robin Test among international partners was performed using different versions of LEED sustainability protocol to the same building with the same boundary conditions, comparing and analyzing the results provided by the participants. The final aim was to identify which issues have more influence on the final performance rate, giving to the users a deeper knowledge of the aspects included in these procedures. The results showed the potential of these building environmental certification systems, capable of offering a transversal level of environmental sustainability. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract

In Europe the contents of Noise Action Plans of road networks are established by the Directive 2002/49/EC. In Italy another plan, the Noise Abatement Plan, is required by the national legislation, in particular by the Decree of the Ministry of the Environment of 29/11/2000. The procedures for the definition of both plans are quite similar and are based on the realization of noise maps. This paper analyses the effects of different methodologies used for noise mapping on the outcomes of the noise abatement plan of the road network managed by the Province of Terni in Italy. The road selected as case study is a single carriageway road that is 50 km long and passes nearby several sensitive receivers such as schools and hospitals. Four different methodologies were employed and the outcomes analysed. In particular in the first methodology a regular grid is used for calculations (Grid Noise Maps- GNM), while in the other ones the noise levels are evaluated at 1 meter from each building façade (Façade Noise maps – FNM). Moreover the latter three methodologies differ one from the other by the selection of the number and the position of the calculation points. The first two methodologies are in compliance with the Italian legislation while the other two are improvements developed and tested by the Authors that allow more realistic and accurate estimates of noise impact on the receivers. Usually the main outcome of an Italian noise abatement plan is the ranking of the buildings/areas that most urgently require mitigation and the definition of the anti-noise measures to be realized. The study shows how the different procedures affect these results and influence the activities of the managing authorities in the realization of the mitigation measures.

Abstract

The international standard ISO 140-5 for the measurement of the sound insulation of building façades will soon be replaced by the new standard ISO 16283-3. This revision includes the procedures for measurements at low frequencies down to 50 Hz. The uncertainty of façade sound insulation, in particular at low frequencies, was evaluated by a Round Robin Test, conducted in a full-scale experimental building at ITC-CNR. Each of the 10 teams involved in the RRT replicated the tests 5 times, for a total of 50 measurements. The different measurement positions inside the receiving room are compared. In particular, all the teams involved in the RRT assessed corner and center room positions; their energy average values according to ISO 16283-1 are considered and the relative uncertainty in terms of repeatability and in situ reproducibility standard deviations are compared with the ones measured and calculated following ISO 140-5.

43. Acoustic optimization of windows and doors through sound intensity measurements

Abstract

ISO 140-5 defines the procedures to evaluate the sound insulation of façades obtaining the global value D2m,nT,w. Moreover, each component of the façade can be characterized in laboratory by means of its airborne sound insulation R using the methodology given by ISO 10140, and the weighted sound reduction index RW calculated using ISO 717-1. It is possible to deepen the analysis of the façade components behavior using sound maps obtained through sound intensity measurements. These are used to locate sound leakages and, in general, to have a clear view of the performance of the tested element sub-components. The paper, after a brief description of the method and the instruments used, presents the results of several campaigns executed on different moveable parts of a building’s envelope: windows, doors and minor components such as rolling shutter boxes. Thanks to the various case-studies presented, it is demonstrated how the sound intensity measurements – using P-P probes - could bring to not negligible improvements both on the design and the installation of the investigated components. Finally, a different technique for measuring sound intensity passing through a window is presented, using a P-U (Pressure - Velocity) probe.

44. Experimental and ray tracing evaluation of the transmittance of glazing systems with selective coatings, at various angles of incidence

Abstract

The application of selective coatings in glazings allows a more efficient management of heating and cooling loads of a building. The solar, visible and UV transmittance are three of the most import parameters for the evaluation of glazing lighting and energy performance, which depends significantly on the rays angle of incidence. The goal of the research is to define the transmittance of glazing systems equipped with selective coatings, varying the rays angle of incidence. A ray tracing simulation code is adopted, previously validated through an experimental campaign conducted with a spectrophotometer. The ray tracing simulations were useful to provide good estimations of the optical properties of coated double sheet glasses, in any irradiation condition, once the properties of the single components are measured.
