Background: Ethnoveterinary studies are important to maintain the sustainability of livestock health and support people's livelihoods through the provision of food, maintaining livestock health, and other biological resources. This study was carried out in Soro District, southern Ethiopia, to identify, document and analyse plant species with ethnoveterinary uses along with the associated indigenous and local knowledge. Materials and methods: Informants were selected using purposive (key informants) and systematic random sampling (general informants) methods. Data on ethnoveterinary plants and their uses were collected through semi-structured interviews, guided field walks, 13 focus group discussions with five to seven members in each and participant observation. Informant consensus factor and fidelity level were computed to identify the most common livestock ailment categories and the best plant species with ethnoveterinary use, respectively. Preference ranking methods were used to identify the potentially effective ethnoveterinary medicinal plants for the most frequently reported livestock ailments. The use diversity of multipurpose plants with ethnoveterinary importance was analysed using the analytical methods of ethnobotany including priority ranking, comparisons and important indices. The T-test statistic was used to compare knowledge differences among different social groups. Results: A total of 132 plant species in 120 genera and 61 families were reported by informants as having ethnoveterinary uses. The plants are said to be used by the local communities in various ways to treat 50 livestock health problems. Higher number of informants (23.77%) cited Momordica foetida for the treatment of 16 livestock ailments. The highest informant consensus value for this species is associated with its use for treating blackleg in cattle; Nicotiana tabacum was cited for the treatment of 15 livestock ailments mainly recommended for the Lumpy Skin Disease/Ailment of bovines; Croton macrostachyus for treatment of 13 livestock ailments including wooden tongue, FMD in bovines; and Gymnanthemum amygdalinum for nine ailments mainly diarrhoea of all livestock types. Achyranthes aspera is claimed to provide the most effective treatment for Aspiration pneumonia (severe coughing in bovines, sheep and goats) alone, while Croton macrostachyus, Ximenia americana, Allium sativum and Juniperus procera were indicated as potential plant species to treat Lumpy Skin Disease in bovines in the order given. The fidelity level analysis showed that Datura stramonium, Dodonaea viscosa subsp. angustifolia and Asparagus africanus were potential medicinal plant species to treat the respective ailments of rabies, Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) and evil eye/spirit. Multipurpose plant species including Prunus africanus, Combretum molle and Afrocarpus falcatus have been highly threatened as indicated by direct matrix ranking mainly due to collection of fuel wood, construction materials and making household utensils, and farm implements rather than for other uses. Conclusion: Soro District has rich and diversified livestock herbal medicinal resources, and indigenous knowledge of remedy preparations and applications is transmitted through generation lines. This resource faces anthropogenic threats with deforestation being the leading factor. Consequently, ethnoveterinary medicinal plants continue to decline before adequate and proper scientific documentation and testing are made. There is a dire need for planning and implementation of appropriate in situ and ex situ conservation strategies and to strive towards ensuring the survival and sustainable utilization of such important plant resources of Soro District. This must be supported by further documentation of the associated indigenous knowledge and pharmacological testing of the key promising species including Balanites aegyptiaca (novel species/NS to treat specific ailment), Brugmansia suaveolens (novel species/NS reported first to treat Livestock ailments/LsAs), Euclea divinorum (NS to treat specific ailments), Grevillea robusta (NS), Hagenia abyssinica (NS for the reported specific ailment), Pentanema confertiflorum (NS), Juniperus procera (NS), Maesa lanceolata (NS), Millettia ferruginea (NS for reported specific ailments), Schrebera alata/NS, Securidaca longepedunculata, Spiniluma oxyacantha/NS, Vepris nobilis (novel species reported first to treat LsAs), Zanthoxylum asiaticum /NS and Ximenia americana (NS for specific ailments). The productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.) in Ethiopia is below the potential due to spatial and temporal soil fertility variability and sub-optimal fertilization. This on-farm study was conducted in 2019 and 2020 to determine yield-limiting nutrients, quantify yield gaps, and determine indigenous soil nutrient supply (ISNS) for lowland rice in Fogera floodplain of Northwest Ethiopia. The study comprised the following treatments; NPKSZnB, -N (PKSZnB), -P (NKSZnB), -K (NPSZnB), -S (NPKZnB), -Zn (NPKSB), -B (NPKSZn), and Zero fertilizer (F0). The treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design considering farmers' fields as replications. The results revealed that the growth and yield of rice were significantly affected by the -N and F0 treatments. However, the other nutrient omissions did not significantly influence the mentioned parameters. The highest (2299.5 kg ha−1) yield response was recorded from the -N treatment. However, very low and insignificant yield responses were recorded from the other nutrient omissions. The average agronomic N use efficiency was 16.7 kg kg−1, which indicated a high probability of yield response to the application of N fertilizer. The lowest (42.4%) ISNS was found for N, while the highest ISNS (>90%) were recorded for P, K, S, Zn, and B. The yield gaps due to the omission of N was 57.6%, while the yield gaps due to the omission of P, K, S, Zn, and B were very low. Therefore, N was found to be the most yield-limiting and most deficient nutrient for the lowland rice production in the study area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Monitoring genetic gain is crucial to ensure breeding programs' effectiveness and identify potential challenges and areas for their improvement. Our study provides a first overview of the trends in genetic gain for tuber yield and disease resistance traits in the IITA's (International Institute of Tropical Agriculture) yam breeding program. We used historical data (2010–2022) from multiple generations of past breeding cycles evaluated at 31 sites in the white Guinea yam (Dioscorea rotundata Poir) breeding pipeline and 28 sites in the water yam (Dioscorea alata L.) breeding pipeline of IITA and its national partners in West Africa. Our result shows positive genetic trends in fresh tuber yield while recording a gain of 1.38% or 99.17 kg ha−1 per year in the white Guinea yam and 2.18% or 252.41 kg ha−1 per year in the water yam breeding pipelines. Genetic trends for virus and anthracnose resistance were in the desired direction but negligible in white Guinea yam, while significant for virus and nonsignificant for anthracnose resistance in water yam. Our findings indicate that while the breeding program has succeeded in enhancing tuber yield, post‐harvest tuber dry matter content and disease resistance (yam mosaic virus and anthracnose) did not follow a similar trend in the material being developed. This implies that the yam breeding program needs to strike a balance between various traits, ensuring that increased yield does not come at a cost to food quality or disease resistance. Our results highlight the importance of continually monitoring and assessing the performance of a breeding program and making informed decisions about which traits to focus on for future improvement. BACKGROUND: Food quality traits related to the genetics of yam influence the acceptability for its consumption. This study aimed at identifying genetic factors underlying sensory and textural quality attributes of boiled and pounded yam, the two dominant food products from white Guinea yam. RESULTS: A genome‐wide association study (GWAS) of a panel of 184 genotypes derived from five multi‐parent crosses population was conducted. The panel was phenotyped for the qualities of boiled and pounded yam using sensory quality and instrument‐based textural profile assays. The genotypes displayed significant variation for most of the attributes. Population differentiation and structure analysis using principal component analysis (PCA) and population structure‐based Bayesian information criteria revealed the presence of four well‐defined clusters. The GWAS results from a multi‐random mixed linear model with kinship and PCA used as covariate identified 13 single‐nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers significantly associated with the boiled and pounded yam food qualities. The associated SNP markers explained 7.51–13.04% of the total phenotypic variance with a limit of detection exceeding 4. CONCLUSION: Regions on chromosomes 7 and 15 were found to be associated with boiled and pounded yam quality attributes from sensory and instrument‐based assays. Gene annotation analysis for the regions of associated SNPs revealed co‐localization of several known putative genes involved in glucose export, hydrolysis and glycerol metabolism. The year 2016 is remembered globally for the adoption of the New York Declaration and its Comprehensive Refugee Response Framework (CRRF) as the new global refugee response model. In this regard, Ethiopia has been one of those African countries that have adopted the Declaration, made specific CRRF pledges and has become a CRRF pilot country. Such national policy move heralded the shift of refugee policy in Ethiopia in the post-2016 era. Nonetheless, compared to the focus accorded to refugees and the role of international institutions and donors, the role of African hosting states in the governance of refugees and how they navigate internal and external demands and adopt policies have been paid little scholarly attention. This study, therefore, aims to fill in this scholarly gap and contribute to the existing debate in the academic and policy circle on state response to refugees in the era of CRRF from the Global South perspective by providing an empirical insight into the nature, dynamics and shift of refugee policies in Ethiopia and the factors that contributed to this effect. Objective: To investigate whether the Veterans Health Administration's (VA) 2019 Referral Coordination Initiative (RCI) was associated with changes in the proportion of VA specialty referrals completed by community‐based care (CC) providers and mean appointment waiting times for VA and CC providers. Data Sources/Study Settings: Monthly facility level VA data for 3,097,366 specialty care referrals for eight high‐volume specialties (cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology, neurology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, physical therapy, and podiatry) from October 1, 2019 to May 30, 2022. Study Design: We employed a staggered difference‐in‐differences approach to evaluate RCI's effects on referral patterns and wait times. Our unit of analysis was facility‐month. We dichotomized facilities into high and low RCI use based on the proportion of total referrals for a specialty. We stratified our analysis by specialty and the staffing model that high RCI users adopted: centralized, decentralized, and hybrid. Data Collection/Extraction Methods: Administrative data on referrals and waiting times were extracted from the VA's corporate data warehouse. Data on staffing models were provided by the VA's Office of Integrated Veteran Care. Principal Findings: We did not reject the null hypotheses that high RCI use do not change CC referral rates or waiting times in any of the care settings for most specialties. For example, high RCI use for physical therapy—the highest volume specialty studied—was associated with −0.054 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −0.114 to 0.006) and 2.0 days (95% CI: −4.8 to 8.8) change in CC referral rate and waiting time at CC providers, respectively, among centralized staffing model adopters. Conclusions: In the initial years of the RCI program, RCI does not have a measurable effect on waiting times or CC referral rates. Our findings do not support concerns that RCI might be impeding Veterans' access to CC providers. Introduction: Pre-hospital ambulance service is the most important part of healthcare service. Client satisfaction with the service indicates the degree of adaptation to the appropriate quality and quantity of services. Patients' dissatisfaction with the service can affect their expectations of the overall services that they will receive later in the definitive care facility. However, it is not a well-addressed area in developing countries, including Ethiopia. Objective: This study aimed to identify the ambulance service satisfaction level and associated factors among service users in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in five governmental hospitals in Addis Ababa city. A face-to-face exit interview technique was employed on a total of 410 consecutively selected participants using a pretested tool developed from similar sources. The cleaned data was entered into the Epi-Data Manager 4.6 version and then exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis. The dependent variable was dichotomized into satisfied and unsatisfied to compute bivariate logistic regression. In the multivariate logistic regression model, predictors with a p-value < 0.05 at the 95% CI were considered to have a significant association. Result: A total of 410 respondents were included in the study. The mean of participants' responses regarding ambulance personnel, call operator, treatment on the scene, and ambulance subscale was 3.64, 3.48, 3.40, and 3.43, respectively. The study found that only 21.5% of participants were satisfied by the ambulance service they received. There was a statistically significant association between ambulance service satisfaction and age (AOR = 3.52, 95% CI: 1.01–12.36), monthly income (AOR = 3.13, 95% CI: 1.41–6.94), ambulance response time (AOR = 10.33, 95% CI: 2.09–51.06), type of ambulance used (AOR = 4.55, 95% CI: 2.19–9.43), and previous ambulance usage (AOR = 2.33, 95% CI: 1.34–4.05). Conclusion: The study found a low level of satisfaction among ambulance users. The findings suggest that ambulance personnel performance is a key determinant of user satisfaction, while treatment at the scene and in the ambulances, and call operator areas require improvement. Age, monthly income, ambulance response time, type of ambulance, and previous ambulance use also influenced satisfaction. Improving the quality of services, reducing response time, and ensuring call operators are trained are vital steps to enhance satisfaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Ethiopia, improved hive technology dissemination was started before five-decades. However, the adoption of improved beekeeping technology is still very low. This study was conducted with the main objectives to evaluating improved beekeeping adoption level and honey yields of different hives and identification of major honey bee plants and flora calendar in the Gedeo zone, South Ethiopia. Three districts were selected purposively based on beekeeping potential and the number of improved hives own by beekeepers. The data was collected from 180 respondents using cross-sectional survey. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics such as mean, frequency and percentage and ANOVA. The result shown that the compositions of disseminated hives in the entire sampled respondents were 286, 476, 121 and 1494 Zander hive, Kenyan top bar hive (KTBH), Mud/Ethio-Ribrab hive (ERH) and Traditional hives respectively. Traditional beekeeping was the dominant system with 63% and intermediate followed by 25%, while modern beekeeping was only 12%. Based on overall mean honey yield, there was no significant difference (P = 0.244) between Zander and KTBH. However, the average honey yield of these improved hives were significantly (P<0.05) higher than Mud/ERH and Traditional hives. Gedeo zone had rich floral resource and diverse floral calendar. Hygenia abyssinica, Bidens ghedoensis, Erythrinia abyssinica, Eucalyptus species, Cordia africana, Coffee arabica, Vernonia species, Susbania susban and Persea americana were major honey bee flora in Gedeo zone. February-March was major honey harvesting season while May-July and October-December respectively were minor honey harvesting periods. Nevertheless, the majority of beekeepers have been practicing honey harvesting once a year from all hives due to lack of awareness and practical skills. Therefore, we recommend that the local government should focus on educating beekeepers to enable them utilizing exhaustively the opportunities of multi-floral season and improved hive technology to maximize honey yield in the area. Although cobalt oxides show great promise as supercapacitor electrode materials, their slow kinetics and low conductivity make them unsuitable for widespread application. We developed Ni and Cu-doped Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) via a simple chemical co-precipitation method without the aid of a surfactant. The samples were analyzed for their composition, function group, band gap, structure/morphology, thermal property, surface area and electrochemical property using X-ray diffraction (XRD), ICP-OES, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and/or Differential thermal analysis (DTA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Cyclic voltammetry (CV), respectively. Notably, for the prepared sample, the addition of Cu to Co3O4 NPs results in a 11.5-fold increase in specific surface area (573.78 m2 g-1) and a decrease in charge transfer resistance. As a result, the Ni doped Co3O4 electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 749 Fg-1, 1.75 times greater than the pristine Co3O4 electrode's 426 F g-1. The electrode's enhanced surface area and electronic conductivity are credited with the significant improvement in electrochemical performance. The produced Ni doped Co3O4 electrode has the potential to be employed in supercapacitor systems, as the obtained findings amply demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Ethiopia is a country located in the Horn of Africa, which combines richness in plant resources and cultures of human plant use. The people of Habru District of North Wollo Zone (Amhara Region, Ethiopia) have a long history of use of plant resources for various purposes including in traditional herbal remedy preparation and use. However, the district has not been adequately studied for its ethnobotanical resources and the associated knowledge. This study focused on human medicinal plants and their traditional uses in Habru District. The objective of the study was to document and analyze the plant species used by the local communities to treat human ailments along with the associated traditional knowledge and practices. Methodology: The study was carried out in Habru District from June 2021 to December 2022. Ethnobotanical data were collected using semi-structured interviews, guided field walks, 13 focus group discussions (one at the district level and 12 at the kebele/subdistrict level) and market surveys. A total of 388 informants (250 males and 138 females) were selected from all 13 kebeles within Habru District using systematic random sampling, and 42 key informants were purposively selected. Descriptive statistics, preference ranking, direct matrix ranking, informant consensus factor and fidelity level were applied for data analysis. Results: The results provide insights into the medicinal plant diversity within Habru District, where 134 plant species in 110 genera and 54 families were documented, including 2 endemics, highlighting the district's significance in biodiversity conservation and healthcare delivery. Disease prevalence analysis showed that gastrointestinal and parasitic ailments (ICF = 0.85), febrile diseases (ICF = 0.84), and culture-related conditions exhibit high informant consensus factors. Remedy preparation involves various plant parts, predominantly leaves (47.3%), followed by roots (22.1%), fruits (7.0%), and seeds (5.8%). Freshly harvested plant parts were frequently used (58.2%), while 24.7% involved both dried and fresh parts. Oral application (47.3%) and topical use (31.8%) are the major routes of remedy administration. The marketability of medicinal plants was evident, with 16.4% of the species reported as marketable, including Terminalia brownii Fresen. Myrtus communis L., Ruta chalepensis L., Olea europaea L. subsp. cuspidata (Wall. & G.Don) Cif., Allium sativum L. and Capsicum annuum L. Multipurpose plants such as Solanum somalense Franchet. (91.3% FL), Ocimum lamiifolium Hochst. ex. Benth. (88.9% FL), and Verbascum sinaiticum Benth. (85.7% FL) exhibited notable healing potentials. Conclusion: The current study underscores the intricate relationship between the local community and medicinal plants, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity conservation and health care and acknowledging the dynamic interplay between cultural heritage and ecosystem health. The results contribute to the development of sustainable conservation strategies, healthcare practices and the preservation of traditional knowledge, and highlight the interdependence of human societies and their natural environments. Community-based conservation initiatives with active participation of local communities are desirable for the conservation and sustainable use of medicinal plant species and their habitats. Raising public awareness about the sustainable harvesting and utilization of marketed medicinal plants (e.g., Terminalia brownii Fresen.) that are under threat is also important to ensure their availability for future generations and contribution to socioeconomic development. Preservation of fish as diet ingredient is challenging in many tropical regions due to poor socioeconomic conditions and lack of freezing facilities. So, alternative preservation techniques could be viable to address the issue. The present study evaluated the effect of brine salting (15% w/v) prior to drying at different temperatures on the nutrient profiles of tambaqui fish (Colossoma macropomum). Whole fish samples (n = 48; 792 ± 16 g; 8 months old) were grouped into two as brine-salted and non-salted, and treated at seven different drying temperatures of 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60°C for a period of 23 h each. To evaluate the impact of Maillard reaction, reactive lysine was also quantified. Drying temperature had no effect on the evaluated macro- and micro-nutrients of tambaqui fish (P > 0.05) while brining reduced the overall protein concentration by 6% (58.8 to 55.4 g/100 g DM; P = 0.004). Brining significantly reduced many amino acids: taurine by 56% (7.1 to 3.1 g/kg; P < 0.001), methionine 17% (14.7 to 12.1 g/kg; P < 0.001), cysteine 11% (5.1 to 4.4 g/kg, P = 0.016), and reactive lysine 11% (52.0 to 46.4 g/kg; P = 0.004). However, alanine, arginine, and serine were not affected by brining (P > 0.05). Brining also reduced the concentrations of Se by 14% (149 to 128 μg/kg DM; P = 0.020), iodine 38% (604 to 373 μg/kg DM; P = 0.020), K 42% (9.71 to 5.61 g/kg DM; P < 0.001) and Mg 18% (1.32 to 1.10 g/kg DM; P = < 0.001) versus an anticipated vast increase in Na by 744% (2.70 to 22.90 g/kg DM; P < 0.001) and ash 28% (12.4 to 16.0 g/100g DM; P < 0.001) concentration. Neither brining nor drying temperature induced changes in % lysine reactivity and fat content of tambaqui fish (P > 0.05). Agreeably, results of multivariate analysis showed a negative association between brining, Na, and ash on one side of the component and most other nutrients on the other component. In conclusion, drying without brining may better preserve the nutritive value of tambaqui fish. However, as a practical remark to the industry sector, it is recommended that the final product may further evaluated for any pathogen of economic or public health importance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to explore the association between access to paid sick leave (AtPSL) and self-reported feelings of depression and anxiety in a nationally representative U.S. working population. In 2023, this study examined data from the 2019–2020 Longitudinal National Health Interview Survey. A Generalized Linear Latent and Mixed Model (GLLAMM) was used to analyze the longitudinal data. The descriptive analysis of population averages showed that fewer workers with AtPSL reported daily feelings of depression (45%), anxiety (24%), and both depression and anxiety (52%) than workers without AtPSL. According to the GLLAMM analysis, the odds of workers with AtPSL self-reporting feelings of daily depression, anxiety, and both were 48%, 27%, and 51% lower, respectively, than workers without AtPSL. This analysis controlled for different demographic and socioeconomic variables. Robustness analysis demonstrated that these associations persisted when the outcome variables were measured in terms of self-reported feelings of weekly depression and anxiety. The role of mental health in improving overall well-being and the recognition of AtPSL as a social justice issue have reinforced the importance of providing paid sick leave to help protect the mental health status of workers. This study was conducted to investigate the variability of Ethiopian black cumin genotypes by using morpho-agronomic traits. Sixty-four genotypes were tested at Debre Zeit and Kulumsa Agricultural Research center in 2021 using an 8 × 8 simple lattice design with two replications. Analysis of variance revealed significant (p ≤ 0.001 or p ≤ 0.01) differences among the genotypes for all traits studied, except the number of primary branches per plant. The effect of location was significant (p ≤ 0.001 or p ≤ 0.05) for all traits except the number of primary branches per plant. It is expected to improve all phenological traits as well as seed yield and yield-related qualitative traits by 4–41% over improved varieties by the selection of the top 5% landraces. Thus, through selection, it would also be possible to shorten the flowering and maturity periods of the genotypes. High broad sense heritability values coupled with high to moderate genetic advance as a percentage of mean values were shown by the number of capsules per plant and plant height which indicates possibilities for improvement of these traits through selection. Plant height, number of primary branches per plant, number of seeds per capsule and thousand seeds weight had a positive and significant phenotypic and genotypic association with seed yield per hectare. Plant height and seed yield per plant had a positive direct effect on seed yield per hectare phenotypically and genotypically. This would be a direct selection criterion for further improvement of the genotypes. The principal component analysis of 12 quantitative traits exhibited 81.5% of the total variance captured by the first four principal components (PCs). Days to 50% flowering, days to full blooming, days to maturity, number of seeds per plant, and seed yield per plant were the main contributor traits for the variation in the first and second PCs. The genotypes were grouped into three different clusters (C-I = 35.93%, C-II = 9.38%, and C-III = 54.69%) based on 12 quantitative traits with significant inter-cluster distances. Although the field of oncology pharmacotherapy has progressed rapidly with the introduction of novel targeted therapies, there are many unintended side effects that require knowledge of laboratory monitoring for appropriate management. The purpose of this article is to summarize the importance of appropriately interpreting laboratory test results, understanding the implications of blood chemistries, and using resources available for monitoring the parameters of novel oncologic therapies. The objective of this study was to investigate the perioperative management and outcomes of patients with a prior history of successful transplantation undergoing spine surgery. We searched Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for matching reports in July 2021. We included case reports, cohort studies, and retrospective analyses, including terms for various transplant types and an exhaustive list of key words for various forms of spine surgery. We included 45 studies consisting of 34 case reports (published 1982–2021), 3 cohort analyses (published 2005–2006), and 8 retrospective analyses (published 2006–2020). The total number of patients included in the case reports, cohort studies, and retrospective analysis was 35, 48, and 9695, respectively. The mean 1-year mortality rate from retrospective analyses was 4.6% ± 1.93%, while the prevalence of perioperative complications was 24%. Cohort studies demonstrated an 8.5% ± 12.03% 30-day readmission rate. The most common procedure performed was laminectomy (38.9%) among the case reports. Mortality after spine surgery was noted for 4 of 35 case report patients (11.4%). This is the first systematic scoping review examining the population of transplant patients with subsequent unrelated spine surgery. There is significant heterogeneity in the outcomes of post-transplant spine surgery patients. Given the inherent complexity of managing this group and elevated mortality and complications compared to the general spine surgery population, further investigation into their clinical care is warranted. Introduction War has influenced the evolution of global neurosurgery throughout the past century. Armed conflict and mass casualty disasters (MCDs), including Humanitarian Assistance Disaster Relief missions, require military surgeons to innovate to meet extreme demands. However, the military medical apparatus is seldom integrated into the civilian health care sector. Neurosurgeons serving in the military have provided a pragmatic template for global neurosurgeons to emulate in humanitarian disaster responses. In this paper, we explore how wars and MCD have influenced innovations of growing interest in the resource-limited settings of global neurosurgery. Methods We performed a narrative review of the literature examining the influence of wars and MCD on contemporary global neurosurgery practices. Results Wartime innovations that influenced global neurosurgery include the development of triage systems and modernization with airlifts, the implementation of ambulance corps, early operation on cranial injuries in hospital camps near the battlefield, the use of combat body armor, and the rise of damage control neurosurgery. In addition to promoting task-shifting and task-sharing, workforce shortages during wars and disasters contributed to the establishment of the physician assistant/physician associate profession in the USA. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face similar challenges in developing trauma systems and obtaining advanced technology, including neurosurgical equipment like battery-powered computed tomography scanners. These challenges—ubiquitous in low-resource settings—have underpinned innovations in triage and wound care, rapid evacuation to tertiary care centers, and minimizing infection risk. Conclusion War and MCDs have catalyzed significant advancements in neurosurgical care both in the pre-hospital and inpatient settings. Most of these innovations originated in the military and subsequently spread to the civilian sector as military neurosurgeons and reservist civilian neurosurgeons returned from the battlefront or other low-resource locations. Military neurosurgeons have utilized their experience in low-resource settings to make volunteer global neurosurgery efforts in LMICs successful. There is a dearth of information on the comparative studies of the physicochemical, proximate, and antioxidant properties as well as quality standards of stingless bee honey (SBH) in Ethiopia. Hence, this study was designed to assess and compare the physicochemical, proximate, and antioxidant properties of SBH, specifically sourced from Meliponula beccarii, and produced under both wild and modern apiary conditions at two distinct geographical locations. A total of forty‐six honey samples were meticulously collected from domesticated stingless bee colonies and naturally occurring wild nests at Wolmera and Cheliya districts. Pollen analysis unveiled eleven distinct bee plant species distributed across six families, with Asteraceae being the most prevalent, primarily represented by Guizotia scabra and Vernonia amygdalina. Notably, the physicochemical, proximate, and antioxidant properties of SBH collected from modern pot hives exhibited significant variances (p <.05) when compared to SBH from wild nests. Principal component analysis (PCA) delineated the differentiation of SBH sources based on both geographical location and the type of beehive. One‐way ANOVA corroborated these distinctions, underscoring significantly higher levels (p <.05) of ash, electrical conductivity, free acidity, hydroxymethylfurfural, sucrose, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and radical scavenging activities of SBH from modern pot hives in Wolmera. Whereas, Cheliya modern pot hives recorded higher values in pH, hydroxymethylfurfural and maltose contents compared to the wild nest SBH. Further analysis through Pearson correlation highlighted a strong positive association between total phenolic content and total flavonoid content with the antioxidant capacity of SBH. This study assesses the suitability of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for downscaling precipitation over East Africa in the context of seasonal forecasting. To achieve this, we design a set of experiments that compare different CNN configurations and deployed the best-performing architecture to downscale one-month lead seasonal forecasts of June–July–August–September (JJAS) precipitation from the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology Climate Forecast System version 1.0 (NUIST-CFS1.0) for 1982–2020. We also perform hyper-parameter optimization and introduce predictors over a larger area to include information about the main large-scale circulations that drive precipitation over the East Africa region, which improves the downscaling results. Finally, we validate the raw model and downscaled forecasts in terms of both deterministic and probabilistic verification metrics, as well as their ability to reproduce the observed precipitation extreme and spell indicator indices. The results show that the CNN-based downscaling consistently improves the raw model forecasts, with lower bias and more accurate representations of the observed mean and extreme precipitation spatial patterns. Besides, CNN-based downscaling yields a much more accurate forecast of extreme and spell indicators and reduces the significant relative biases exhibited by the raw model predictions. Moreover, our results show that CNN-based downscaling yields better skill scores than the raw model forecasts over most portions of East Africa. The results demonstrate the potential usefulness of CNN in downscaling seasonal precipitation predictions over East Africa, particularly in providing improved forecast products which are essential for end users. The global climate change negatively affects the photovoltaic performance of traditional solar cell technologies. This article investigates the potential of organic photovoltaics (OPV) for high‐temperature environments, ranging from urban hot summers (30—40 °C) and desert regions (65 °C) up to (aero) space conditions (130 °C), the thermal window in which OPV can operate. The approach is based on a combination of experiments and simulations up to 180 °C, moving significantly beyond the conventional temperature ranges reported in the literature. New 2H‐benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole‐5,6‐dicarboxylic imide‐based copolymers with decomposition onset temperatures above 340 °C are used for this study, in combination with non‐fullerene acceptors. Contrary to their inorganic counterparts, OPV devices show a positive temperature coefficient up to ≈90 °C. At temperatures of 150 °C, they are still operational, retaining their room temperature efficiency. Complementary simulations are performed using an in‐house developed software package that numerically solves the drift‐diffusion equations to understand the general trends in the obtained current–voltage characteristics and the materials' intrinsic behavior as a function of temperature. The presented methodology of combined high‐temperature experiments and simulations can be further applied to investigate the thermal window of operation for other OPV material systems, opening novel high‐temperature application routes. Rabies is a zoonotic disease affecting both public health and the livestock industry in Ethiopia. However, there is limited national-level information on the extent of the disease. Therefore, we studied the national burden and distribution of Rabies on both humans and animals. We conducted a retrospective descriptive study on rabies by obtaining five years (2018–2022) data from the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) and the Ministry of Agriculture. We analyzed the incidence, mortalities, temporal and spatial patterns. Microsoft Excel and ArcGIS version 10.2 were used for descriptive and spatial analysis respectively. A total of 37,989 Rabies suspected human exposure cases and 297 deaths were reported with a mean annual number of 7,598 human exposure cases and 59 deaths. The exposure case and mortality incidence rates were 6 and 0.05 per 100,000 populations respectively. Suspected human exposure cases significantly increased from 5,217 (2018) to 11,298 (2022) at a rate of 2.2. In the same period, 2,094 animal suspected rabies cases and 1,682 deaths were reported predominantly in dogs (71.2%), followed by cattle (27.8%) and other domestic animals (1%). There is high rabies suspected human exposure cases at national level. Suspected rabid dogs were the major source of infection in humans. There were gaps in the reporting of animal cases and low dog vaccination coverage. Hence, it is important to strengthen One Health collaboration to enhance surveillance, information sharing, and diagnostic capacity and improve mass dog vaccination coverage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, we studied the structural, electrical, lattice vibrational, and magnetic properties of the quaternary compound Zn(1−x)FexSeyTe(1−y) using density functional theory. All the calculations have been performed based on first-principles calculations using Perdew–Zunger [local-density approximation (LDA)] and Hubbard parameter correction (LDA+U) functionals as employed in the Quantum Espresso package. The computed equilibrium lattice parameter for ZnTe is 6.01 Å, and the energy bandgap, Eg, is 1.362 eV, which is consistent with the experimental values as well as the previous reports, respectively. The influence of the co-doping of iron and selenium on electrical and magnetic properties in a ZnTe system is discussed in detail. The co-doping of iron and selenium affects metallic behavior in these systems by forming localized states between the conduction and valance bands. The presence of localized states is related to the metallic properties of the iron atom, specifically iron 3d orbitals. The spin-polarized density of state and band structure computations also confirmed that the iron and selenium co-doped ZnTe system exhibits significant half-metal ferromagnetic and dilute magnetic semiconductor features at room temperature. Furthermore, the phonon calculation of these systems indicated that the systems are dynamically stable and that localized frequency states are created at higher frequencies due to the presence of iron atoms. As a result, the iron and selenium co-doped ZnTe systems can be considered for magnetic and spintronic device applications at room temperature, pending further experimental research. As the largest felid in the Americas, the jaguar Panthera onca has both ecological and cultural significance in Bolivia. Yet jaguar populations are declining because of multiple pervasive anthropogenic pressures, including domestic and international demand for their body parts. Since 2013, Bolivia has become a centre of the illegal trade of jaguar body parts, driven by demand from Chinese markets. From 2021, there have been anecdotal reports of jaguar body parts being sold to prisons in north-western Bolivia, where inmates use them to make crafts to be sold at local markets. Here we provide further insights into this illegal wildlife trade activity. Specifically, we show that inmates at Mocovi prison in Trinidad purchase skins of jaguars and other wild animals directly from hunters and from vendors at local markets. Goods (wallets, hats and purses) produced from the skins are sold back to vendors by the inmates to provide income for their daily sustenance. Testimony from an inmate also stated that large bulk orders for wildlife products had been received from a non-Bolivian client base. The San Borja municipality in Beni was indicated as a key location where jaguars are being targeted for their skins to supply the illegal production of wildlife products in Mocovi prison. Four in five children with inborn errors of immunity globally remain undiagnosed. These figures are disproportionally high in low-income countries like Ethiopia. Apart from the inclusion of basic overviews of these disorders in to postgraduate pediatric curricula, little effort has been placed in to establishing clinical immunology training programs. This report summarizes the existing epidemiology of inborn errors of immunity in Ethiopia, unique presentations in Ethiopian children, challenges faced in diagnosing them, and efforts to improve their management. Industrial chemical pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) dye are released into the water body and potentially cause harm to the human and aquatic biosphere. Therefore, this study aims to synthesize eco-friendly nanocatalysts, i.e., reduced graphene oxide (rGO), zinc oxide (ZnO), and reduced graphene oxide-zinc oxide (rGO@ZnO) nanocomposites, for efficient photocatalytic degradation of MB dye. A graphite rod was obtained from waste dry cell batteries for the electrochemical exfoliation synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) and rGO. For the eco-friendly synthesis of ZnO and rGO@ZnO nanocatalysts, Croton macrostachyus leaf extract was used as a reducing and capping agent. The synthesized nanocatalysts were characterized using a UV–Vis spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray. The eco-friendly synthesized rGO, ZnO, and rGO@ZnO nanocatalysts were applied for the photocatalytic degradation of MB dye using direct sunlight irradiation. At optimum parameters, photocatalytic degradation of MB dye efficiency reached up to 66%, 96.5%, and 99.0%, respectively. Furthermore, kinetics of the photodegradation reaction based on rGO, ZnO, and rGO@ZnO nanocatalysts follow pseudo-first-order with a rate constant of 2.16 × 10–3 min−1, 4.97 × 10−3 min−1, and 5.03 × 10−3 min−1, respectively. This study characterized the chemical composition of 49 accessions of O. basilicum collected from different parts of Ethiopia using GC–MS. Four compounds (eucalyptol, linalool, estragole, and eugenol) were found in all accessions, and seven compounds were found in large quantities of more than 10 %; methyl cinnamate (41.9 %), geraniol (27.9 %), linalool (25.41 %), eugenol (23.08 %), β-bisabolene (23.03 %), eucalyptol (17 %) and estragole (16.6 %). Cluster analysis grouped the 49 accessions into four chemotypes. Chemotype A consisting of eugenol/ estragole/ eucalyptol/ β-bisabolene), chemotype B (eucalyptol/estragole), chemotype C (linalool/geraniol) and chemotype D (methyl cinnamate/linalool). The results of this study indicated that the compounds found in Ethiopian O. basilicum accessions are highly diverse. Developing sustainable construction products has been showing a rising trend recently. Geopolymer composites are remarkable binding materials fabricated based on recycling and sustainability. In this paper, an experimental investigation was conducted to study some mechanical and durability characteristics of steel fiber-reinforced fly ash/slag-based geopolymer concrete (GPC) with different proportions of recycled coarse aggregate. Steel fiber-reinforced geopolymer concrete mixtures incorporating recycled coarse aggregates of up to 40% at the interval of 10% were prepared, and the mixtures without recycled coarse aggregate were used as reference samples. The steel fiber ratio of 0.3% and 0.6% were used and the combined effect of steel fiber and recycled coarse aggregate on the geopolymer composites' behavior regarding strength properties, sulfate resistance, elevated temperature resistance, abrasion resistance, and freezing-thawing resistance was addressed. A significant improvement in strength properties was observed in steel fiber reinforced recycled aggregate geopolymer concrete with increasing fiber content; however, the strength properties of geopolymer concrete were decreased with the increase of recycled coarse aggregate amount. Also, the properties such as abrasion resistance, resistance to elevated temperature, sulfate resistance, and freeze-thaw resistance were improved with the addition of steel fiber. It indicates that the synergetic effect of steel fiber and recycled aggregate helps to produce ecologically sound geopolymer concrete with good engineering properties and durability characteristics that will bring sustainability to the concrete sector. Generally, the results show that the recycled coarse aggregate ratio of up to 30% and 0.6% of steel fiber can be considered an ideal combination to make geopolymer concrete with better overall properties. Forced internal displacement has become one of the prominent issues in the world today. Ethiopia is not an exception to this problem. The country has been witnessing the internal displacement of millions of people particularly since Prime Minister Abiy assumed power in 2018. However, the topic has not received adequate scholarly attention and this paper aims to fill in this gap and provide a contextualized and distinctive perspective by examining the root causes of the current internal displacement crisis, the governance mechanisms, and the responses taken by the government. As the finding reveals, the ideological antecedent of ethnic federalism has been the underlying drive behind ever-increasing conflict-induced internal displacements across different parts of the country. The government has been reluctant to recognize IDPs existence (particularly conflict-induced displacements) up until now and tried to address the IDPs issue in a fragmented manner. Yet, these governance and response undertakings were not without their setbacks. In conclusion, conflict-induced displacements are likely to continue unabated and remain a challenge for the country for the foreseeable future unless the ethnic-based political structure is somehow addressed. The relationship between inflation, income inequality, and economic growth is a subject of intense debate among economic researchers and policymakers. This study aims to analyze this relationship in Ethiopia using advanced statistical techniques such as VEC (vector error correction) model with Granger causality, and Johansen's cointegrated. The study covers the period from 1980 to 2022 and includes pre and post-estimation diagnosis tests to ensure the accuracy of the model. The results indicate the presence of a long-run relationship among inflation, income inequality, and economic growth, as confirmed by Johansen's cointegrated test. Additionally, the vector error correction model shows a strong long-run relationship between economic growth, income inequality, and inflation. In the short run, there is a significant association between income inequality and economic growth, as well as between inflation and economic growth. The Granger causality test reveals a bidirectional causality between economic growth and income inequality and between economic growth and inflation. However, there is a unidirectional causality from inflation to income inequality. Based on these findings, it is suggested that the government should implement various strategies and policies, including redistribution policies, social safety nets, promoting inclusive economic growth, coordinating effective monetary and fiscal policies, implementing progressive taxation, and reforming the labor market. Background: Breeding objectives are designed to achieve targeted dairy cow production goals, which can be affected by production type, farmer preferences, environmental factors and genetic factors individually or in combination. Breeding practices, such as both controlled and uncontrolled, and artificial insemination (AI) are the tools used to obtain the desired breeding objectives. The lower reproductive performance of indigenous dairy cows affects the total milk production and calf crops that are produced during their lifetime. Designing appropriate breeding objectives and breeding practices can improve the reproductive performance of dairy cows and their overall production performance. Materials and methods: The current study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the breeding, practices and performance of indigenous dairy cattle in the south western part of Ethiopia. The districts of Gesha and Chena were purposefully chosen. The study design for the 384 household surveys was a cross‐sectional survey with a simple random sample approach. Data analysis was carried out by MS‐Excel (2010) and the general linear model procedure of SAS of 2008. Results: The current study revealed that methods of breeding were predominantly natural‐controlled mating, followed by natural‐uncontrolled mating and AI in descending order. Breeding objectives were input function, output function, sociocultural and economic functions and assets and security functions in decreasing order of rank. Reproduction performance indexes of indigenous dairy cows age at first service (3.72 ± 0.05 years), age at first calving (AFC) (4.71 ± 0.07 years), calving interval (CI) (1.58 ± 0.03 years), days open (DO) (4.26 ± 0.11 months), services per conception in natural mating (1.4 ± 0.08) and AI (2.73 ± 0.14), age of bull at maturity (4.17 ± 0.74 years), interoestrus interval (23.18 ± 0.61 days), calves crop (7.53 ± 0.22) and the life span of indigenous dairy cow (11.94 ± 0.26 years) were significant (p < 0.01) between two districts, whereas the values of age of bull at maturity and number of services per conception in natural mating were significant (p < 0.05) between districts. Conclusions: Using AI and major reproduction performances, such as AFC, CI and DO of indigenous dairy cows in the study area, were very low. Therefore, concerned bodies should intervene to improve reproduction performance through the utilization of AI techniques, with the integration of forage development activities and improvements in livestock health care. Background: Alcohol consumption during the pregnancy period is high despite the well-established evidence of its harmful effects on pregnancy and infant development. Early identification and behavioral modification are of great significance. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated factors of alcohol consumption among pregnant women attending antenatal care at governmental hospitals in the Harari regional state, Eastern Ethiopia. Method: From April 1/2022-May 1/2022, an institutional-based cross-sectional survey was conducted among 589 pregnant women attending antenatal care governmental hospitals in Harari regional state. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select study participants during the study period. Data were collected through face-to-face interview methods using AUDIT-C. The collected data were coded, entered into Epi-data data version 3.1, and analyzed by SPSS Version 26. Binary logistic regression was carried out to identify independent predictors of alcohol consumption at a 95% confidence level. Results: From a total of 617 eligible participants, 589 participated in the study with a response rate of 95.46%. The overall prevalence of alcohol consumption among pregnant women in Harari regional state governmental hospitals was 21.2% (95% CI:17.8, 24.4). In multivariate analysis, single marital status (AOR = 5.18;95% CI (2.66,10.11), previous history of abortion(AOR = 4.07;95% CI(2.06,8.04), family history of mental illness (AOR = 4.79;95% CI (1.94,11.83), depression (AOR 2.79; 95%CI(1.35,5.76), and anxiety(AOR = 2.51; 95% CI (1.23, 5.12) were variables found to have a statistically significant association with alcohol consumption during pregnancy in Harari regional state governmental hospitals. Conclusion: In comparison to the majority of other research, the prevalence of alcohol usage during pregnancy was high in this study. This study observed that single marital status, previous history of abortion, family history of mental illness, depression, and anxiety were highly associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Background: Although Ethiopia has made great strides in recent years to reduce the threat of malaria, the disease remains a significant issue in most districts of the country. It constantly disappears in parts of the areas before reappearing in others with erratic transmission rates. Thus, developing a malaria epidemic early warning system is important to support the prevention and control of the incidence. Methods: Space-time malaria risk mapping is essential to monitor and evaluate priority zones, refocus intervention, and enable planning for future health targets. From August 2013 to May 2019, the researcher considered an aggregated count of genus Plasmodium falciparum from 149 districts in Southern Ethiopia. Afterwards, a malaria epidemic early warning system was developed using model-based geostatistics, which helped to chart the disease's spread and future management. Results: Risk factors like precipitation, temperature, humidity, and nighttime light are significantly associated with malaria with different rates across the districts. Districts in the southwest, including Selamago, Bero, and Hamer, had higher rates of malaria risk, whereas in the south and centre like Arbaminch and Hawassa had moderate rates. The distribution is inconsistent and varies across time and space with the seasons. Conclusion: Despite the importance of spatial correlation in disease risk mapping, it may occasionally be a good idea to generate epidemic early warning independently in each district to get a quick picture of disease risk. Aim: To evaluate coverage of effective Kangaroo mother care (KMC) by developing a model that would result in high coverage (≥80%) of KMC for newborn weighing less than 2000 g at birth in Tigray region, Ethiopia. Methods: The study used formative research and continuous programme learning in iterative cycles of model development and modification conducted in close collaboration with the Tigray Regional Health Bureau. Quantitative methods were used to evaluate the various models. All study facilities were enrolled simultaneously, and hospitals and health centres were considered to become KMC‐providers. Results: The final scalable model implemented in two rural districts and one special urban zone of Tigray region attained the desired objective, with coverage of effective KMC of 82.3% at discharge. Conclusion: Achieving high coverage of KMC is possible through the design of context‐specific implementation strategies. The key factors for success were the commitment and strong leadership from the regional health bureau, strong linkages within the health system and between different departments within health facilities, improved health worker knowledge, skills and attitudes, hospitals and health centres that supported KMC performance, and systematic generation and use of data for continuous quality improvement. Ascariasis lumbricoides is a roundworm that causes one of the most common soil-transmitted helminth infections worldwide. Ascariasis is typically found in the jejunum and transmitted through the intake of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs through food and water. Initially, ascariasis can cause pulmonary symptoms during the first 6–8 weeks of ingestion and can progress to serious complications of intestinal obstruction and hepatobiliary manifestations. Biliary ascariasis is a complication of ascariasis migration from the jejunum to the hepatobiliary tree and can present with a variety of symptoms ranging from biliary colic to more serious features such as acute cholangitis. Cellulitis is a potentially serious bacterial skin infection. Penile cellulitis refers to the inflammation of the penile shaft and commonly occurs in uncircumcised, sexually active young adults. We reported the case of a 25-year-old heterosexual circumcised male patient with a two-day history of swelling and pain over the penile shaft. Local examination revealed a diffusely swollen penile shaft, erythematous, warm to the touch, and tender. The penile discharge culture was suggestive of a Streptococcus species infection. Ultrasonography of the penis showed increased echogenicity of the left side of the penile shaft soft tissue with a markedly increased Doppler signal, indicating cellulitis. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed with cellulitis of the penis and managed with broad-spectrum antibiotics. Though history and clinical examination are sufficient to diagnose penile cellulitis, our case highlighted that ultrasound could also support the diagnosis of penile cellulitis and help rule out differentials. Background: Iodine deficiency is a global public health threat, affecting an estimated two billion people. The median urinary iodine concentration is more reliable in determining recent iodine intakes and the risks of iodine deficiency. Therefore, this study was aimed to identify the factors associated with recent iodine intake level using median urinary iodine concentration as an indicator among household food handlers in southwest Ethiopia. Methods: A community-based survey was conducted with selected households using a pretested interviewer-administered questionnaire in southwest Ethiopia. A 20-gram sample of table salt and a 5 ml causal urine samples were also collected and analyzed using rapid test kit and a Sandell-Kolthoff reaction, respectively. A salt iodine concentration above 15 ppm was classified as adequately iodized and a median urinary iodine concentration between 100 and 200µgl− 1 was considered as adequate iodine intake. A bivariable and multivariable logistic regression model was fitted. Crude and adjusted odds ratios with their 95% confidence levels were reported. Associations with a p-value ≤ 0.05 were used to declare statistical significance. Results: A total of 478 women were included, with a mean age of 33.2 (± 8.4 years). Only 268 (56.1%) of the households had adequately iodized salt (> 15 ppm). The median urinary iodine concentration (interquartile range) was 87.5 µg l− 1 (45.6-107.6). In a fitted multivariable logistic regression model (p-value = 0.911), illiterate women (AOR = 4.61; 95% CI: 2.17, 9.81), poorly iodized salt in the household (AOR = 25.0; 95% CI: 13–48), salt purchased from open market (AOR = 1.93; 95% CI: 1.0, 3.73) and women who do not read the label during purchasing the salt (AOR = 3.07; 95% CI: 1.31, 7.17) were important predictors of the risk of Iodine deficiency. Marital distress increases the risk of morbidity and mortality by altering psychological and biological health, including cardiovascular and endocrine function. Numerous interventions have been developed to mitigate marital distress. However, most of these interventions had very specific content and were limited to certain segments of the population. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a marital relationship skills training intervention on the marital adjustment of married people in Ethiopia. We conducted a randomized‐controlled trial study on 80 married people with low marital satisfaction. We used STATA 14 statistical software to process the data. The results of an Independent sample's t test analysis showed that marital relationship skills training had a significant impact on the marital adjustment of distressed couples (p = 0.001, 95% confidence interval: 0.79–1.10). COVID-19 continues to take a large toll on the mental health of the not working population, particularly of those who were unable to work. This study, using the Household Pulse Survey, estimated the association between reasons for not working and major depression and anxiety symptoms (MDAS). The lowest MDAS was reported by retirees. Individuals who were unable to work because of transportation problems, layoffs, COVID-19 concerns, and sickness or disability reported the highest MDAS. Mediation analysis showed that the direct and indirect effects of reasons for not working were much higher for those individuals who were unable to work than for individuals who were working or decided not to work. The utilization of solar energy, an abundant and renewable resource, shows great promise. Various technologies have been employed to capture this vast energy potential. In this study, the effectiveness of natural dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was explored through experimental and computational methods. Organic dyes derived from specific plant species were examined, with a solvent mixture of ethanol, methanol, and tetrahydrofuran used for extraction. A UV–vis spectrophotometer was utilized to measure the sensitizers' optical characteristics. The study employed density functional theory (DFT), implemented in Gaussian 09 W software, to perform computational calculations. The B3LYP method and a basis set of 6-31G++(d,p) were chosen for optimizing the geometries and energetics of dye molecules. The DFT results indicated that the dye molecules had a bandgap in the range of 2.16–2.38 eV. The photochemical performance of all four fabricated DSSC-based devices was evaluated to be between 0.33% and 1.04%, and the Euryops pectinatus sensitizer demonstrated the highest efficiency of 1.04% among the studied sensitizers. Birthweight is a useful public health measure of maternal health, nutrition, healthcare delivery, and child morbidity and mortality. Previous research did not focus on dietary patterns but rather on a single or a few foods or nutrients. This study aimed to assess the maternal dietary pattern and its association with birthweight in northern Ethiopia. A hospital‐based cross‐sectional study was conducted among 373 pregnant mothers in their third trimester of pregnancy who came to attend their routine antenatal care service. The food frequency questionnaire was collected from the previous week, and the birthweight data were collected from the medical records after delivery. Three maternal dietary patterns were identified; dietary pattern includes eggs, milk, milk products, and certain fruits and roots. Dietary pattern 2 includes certain vegetables, green leafy vegetables, vitamin A‐rich vegetables, pulses such as beans, peas, and chickpeas, and drinks like coffee, tea, and soda. Dietary pattern 3 includes meat, nuts, and grains such as teff, corn, wheat, and white flour. Dietary pattern 1 (β = 52.45, p =.03) and dietary pattern 2 (β = 66.76, p =.01), residency (β = 287.08, p <.001), a mid‐upper‐arm circumference of 21–23 cm (β = 187.10, p =.02), a mid‐upper‐arm circumference of >23 cm (β = 272, p =.01), and gestational age at delivery (β = 12.58, p =.004) were the factors significantly associated with increased birthweight. Cardiotocography (CTG) is a widely used technique to monitor fetal heart rate (FHR) during labour and assess the health of the baby. However, visual interpretation of CTG signals is subjective and prone to error. Automated methods that mimic clinical guidelines have been developed, but they failed to improve detection of abnormal traces. This study aims to classify CTGs with and without severe compromise at birth using routinely collected CTGs from 51,449 births at term from the first 20 min of FHR recordings. Three 1D-CNN and LSTM based architectures are compared. We also transform the FHR signal into 2D images using time-frequency representation with a spectrogram and scalogram analysis, and subsequently, the 2D images are analysed using a 2D-CNNs. In the proposed multi-modal architecture, the 2D-CNN and the 1D-CNN-LSTM are connected in parallel. The models are evaluated in terms of partial area under the curve (PAUC) between 0–10% false-positive rate; and sensitivity at 95% specificity. The 1D-CNN-LSTM parallel architecture outperformed the other models, achieving a PAUC of 0.20 and sensitivity of 20% at 95% specificity. Our future work will focus on improving the classification performance by employing a larger dataset, analysing longer FHR traces, and incorporating clinical risk factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bagging (i.e., bootstrap aggregating) involves combining an ensemble of bootstrap estimators. We consider bagging for inference from noisy or incomplete measurements on a collection of interacting stochastic dynamic systems. Each system is called a unit, and each unit is associated with a spatial location. A motivating example arises in epidemiology, where each unit is a city: the majority of transmission occurs within a city, with smaller yet epidemiologically important interactions arising from disease transmission between cities. Monte Carlo filtering methods used for inference on nonlinear non-Gaussian systems can suffer from a curse of dimensionality (COD) as the number of units increases. We introduce bagged filter (BF) methodology which combines an ensemble of Monte Carlo filters, using spatiotemporally localized weights to select successful filters at each unit and time. We obtain conditions under which likelihood evaluation using a BF algorithm can beat a COD, and we demonstrate applicability even when these conditions do not hold. BF can out-perform an ensemble Kalman filter on a coupled population dynamics model describing infectious disease transmission. A block particle filter (BPF) also performs well on this task, though the bagged filter respects smoothness and conservation laws that a BPF can violate. for this article are available online. Background: People with kidney failure require renal replacement therapy in the form of dialysis or a kidney transplant for survival. Many facets of their life, both within and outside the dialysis unit, are impacted by the management of this disease. It is important to comprehend the experiences of people undergoing hemodialysis in order to improve the care provided to them. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the experiences of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis in Ethiopia. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted at two healthcare facilities in Ethiopia. Individual interviews with 15 participants (men and women aged 19–63), undergoing hemodialysis in Ethiopia, were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. Results: The analysis resulted in five themes: Feeling grateful, Facing a restricted life, a Supportive environment, Dreaming of a transplant, and Leading a hassled life. The subthemes include Trust in treatment, Faith in God, Challenging fluid and dietary restrictions, Being too fatigued to socialize, Being stigmatized, Family and social support, Supportive healthcare, Lacking a donor and sponsor, COVID-19 as a barrier, Financial constraints, Inaccessibility to care and transport and Access line implantation. Despite being dependent on a machine and having to deal with food and fluid restrictions as well as financial challenges, participants were hopeful and dreamed of a transplant. Conclusion: From the study's participants, it was discovered that the experiences of people with kidney failure undergoing hemodialysis were generally, considerably negative narratives. Based on the results we recommend development of multidisciplinary teams to better meet patients' physical, emotional, and social needs while undergoing hemodialysis. Hepatitis B is one of the world's most common and severe infectious diseases. Worldwide, over 350 million people are currently estimated to be persistent carriers of the hepatitis B virus (HBV), with the death of 1 million people from the chronic stage of HBV infection. In this work, developed a nonlinear mathematical model for the transmission dynamics of HBV. We constructed the mathematical model by considering vaccination, treatment, migration, and screening effects. We calculated both disease-free and endemic equilibrium points for our model. Using the next-generation matrix, an effective reproduction number for the model is calculated. We also proved the asymptotic stability of both local and global asymptotically stability of disease-free and endemic equilibrium points. By calculating the sensitivity indices, the most sensitive parameters that are most likely to affect the disease's endemicity are identified. From the findings of this work, we recommend vaccination of the entire population and screening all the exposed and migrants. Additionally, early treatment of both the exposed class after screening and the chronically infected class is vital to decreasing the transmission of HBV in the community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, by obtaining exact time-dependent solutions, we study how the velocity, the efficiency, and the coefficient of performance of the refrigerator behave not only at steady-state but also at any time t for a particle moves on M Brownian ratchets arranged on a network. Far from a steady state, all of the thermodynamic quantities explicitly depend on network size. However, at steady state, the velocity, the efficiency, and the coefficient of performance of the refrigerator become independent of the network size M. We then study the thermodynamic features of the model system by including heat loss due to particle recrossing (heat loss due to kinetic energy) at the boundary between the hot and cold reservoirs. When the heat exchange via kinetic energy is included, the system becomes irreversible or less efficient even at the quasistatic limit. Furthermore, the velocity, efficiency, and coefficient of performance of the refrigerator of the motor that operates between the hot and cold baths are also compared and contrasted with a system that operates in a heat bath where its temperature linearly decreases along with the reaction coordinate. Regardless of the network size, a system that operates between the hot and cold baths has significantly lower velocity but a higher efficiency in comparison with a linearly decreasing temperature case. For a linearly decreasing temperature case, we show that the efficiency of such a Brownian heat engine is far less than Carnot's efficiency even at the quasistatic limit. Our analysis indicates that depending on the thermal ratchets arrangement, not only a fast unidirectional speed can be achieved but also the particle can be transported to the desired location in a network with many dangling bonds and loops. Background: Intrauterine devices are a widely used method of contraception worldwide. These devices are reliable, cost-effective, long-acting, and reversible. Their placement in the uterus is usually simple and safe. Forgotten IUDs carry some complications and can adversely affect the health of women. Therefore, appropriate counseling during insertion and timely removal are crucial. Case summary: We present the case of retained Lippes loop IUD for 40 years in a 75-year-old postmenopausal patient from Western Ethiopia. The patient presented to the hospital with postmenopausal pelvic pain. The loop was removed with spongy forceps. The patient was discharged with analgesia and doxycycline twice a day for 3 days. Conclusion: Different works of the literature showed that retained Lippes loop IUD carries some complications. Our case was also presented with postmenopausal pelvic pain. Background: In Ethiopia, the majority of animal owners throughout the country depend on traditional healthcare practices to manage their animals' health problems. This ethnoveterinary study was carried out in Ensaro District, North Showa Zone, and Amhara Region, Ethiopia, to identify medicinal plant species used by the local community to treat various livestock ailments. Methods: To collect ethnobotanical information, a total of 389 informants (283 men and 106 women) were selected. Among these 95 traditional medicine practitioners were purposely chosen, while the remaining 294 were selected through a systematic random sampling method. Ethnobotanical data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, guided filed walks and focus group discussions. The Informant Consensus Factor (ICF) and Fidelity Level (FL) values, preference, and direct matrix exercise ranking were determined using quantitative methods. Statistical tests were used to compare indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants among different informant groups. Results: A total of 44 ethnoveterinary medicinal plant species were collected and identified that were distributed across 43 genera and 28 families. The family Solanaceae stood first by contributing 4 species followed by Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae and lamiaceae with 3 species each. Thirty- seven (88.09%) medicinal plants were collected from wild habitats, 6 medicinal plant species were collected from home garden. The most frequently used life form was shrubs (23 species, 54.76%) followed by herbs (13 species, 30.95%). The widely used parts of medicinal plants were leaves followed by roots. Prepared remedies were administered through drenching, dropping, smearing, eating, wrapping, fumigating and washing. There was significant difference in the indigenous knowledge of medicinal plants between gender, urban and rural people, general and key informants and among age groups. Conclusion: Ensaro District is a relatively rich in diversity of ethnoveterinary medicinal plants together with a rich indigenous knowledge in the local communities to collect and effectively utilize for the management different livestock diseases. On the other hand, these days, agricultural expansion, fuel wood collection, cutting plants for fence, furniture and charcoal production are the major threatening factors of these plant resources.
