Purpose The COVID‐19 pandemic has presented an international health crisis of a scope not seen in our lifetime. While much attention has been paid to health workers in critical care and acute areas, nurses working outside of hospitals are also significantly affected. This study sought to investigate the experience of nurses working in Australian primary healthcare during the COVID‐19 pandemic. In particular, it sought to understand the implications on their employment status, role, and access to personal protective equipment. Design and Methods Nurses employed in primary healthcare across Australia were invited to participate in a cross‐sectional online survey through social media and professional organizations. The survey tool was composed of demographics, and of questions about the nurses’ employment, work role, and access to personal protective equipment. Findings Of the 637 responses received, nearly half (43.7%) reported a decrease in hours and threatened or actual loss of employment. While most respondents felt that they had sufficient knowledge about COVID‐19, they expressed concern about work‐related risks to themselves and their family. Most respondents described never or only sometimes having sufficient personal protective equipment in their workplace. Just over half of respondents (54.8%) felt well supported by their employer. A third of respondents (34%) perceived that care provided in their workplace was significantly or slightly worse than before the pandemic. Conclusions This is the first study of primary healthcare nurses’ experiences during the COVID‐19 pandemic. The study findings highlighted a concerning level of insecurity around primary healthcare nursing employment, as well as issues with the availability of personal protective equipment for these nurses. The perception that the pandemic has resulted in reduced quality of care needs further exploration to ensure that those with chronic conditions are supported to maintain and promote health. Clinical Relevance Understanding the implications of COVID‐19 on the primary healthcare nursing workforce is vital to ensure staff retention and care quality. Ensuring that the community remains healthy and supported at home is vital to both reduce the burden on the health system and reduce secondary mortality.

Today, society is shifting away from just economic measures of development to human-centered measures and value- based indicators. The SDGs are not just aimed at government but many other strategic actors, including civil society. Nested structures of responsibility for implementation will be required as some things are just not possible to achieve only by policy. A key challenge for engaging civil society in delivery of the SDGs will be to take the very impressive process and translate them into a language that people will identify with and adhere to. Additionally, it is important to recognize that a large part of humanity simply will not care about the goals and will be motivated by forces that work counter to them so new strategies must assume such. In this paper we explore the role of global cities in the global governance architecture, specifically with regards to the implementation of the SDGs in Global Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. We then provide a case study of Abu Dhabi by applying the Sustainability-Oriented Innovation Index for Airports©, with regards to the international airport’s capacity to align sustainability strategies through three unique lenses of environmental, social, and technological innovation. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate how the collaborative responsiveness, reflexivity, and adaptability of a city and its respective airport breeds the kind of legitimacy called for by citizens and solidifies the role of cities in today’s global governance architecture as a main actor for the implementation of the SDGs.

Today's global cities are hyper-connected, transcend borders and impact international agendas. Within the context of global change, cities' perpetual adaptability, reflexivity and responsiveness, have legitimized their growing role within the global governance architecture. Nevertheless, the increased mismatch between the role cities are expected to play at the global level and their place within global governance structures hinders the collective ability to address planetary challenges. Taking stock of the importance of inclusivity in cities in order to solve these challenges, innovate and cultivate legitimacy, we argue that the City of Geneva, in collaboration with the Geneva International Airport, achieves legitimacy in the global governance architecture due to its demonstrated capacity to be a champion in social innovation through its facilitation of participatory urbanism. The city of Geneva has been at the epicenter of global governance and decision-making for nearly 100 years and is a prime example of local level implementation of innovative solutions to global challenges, such as sustainable urban transportation and energy systems. This paper presents our analysis of the City of Geneva through our Sustainability-Oriented Innovation Index for Airports©, with regards the international airport's capacity to align sustainability strategies through three unique lenses of environmental, social, and technological innovation.
