Abstract

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. Abstract

With the prevalence of wide-field, time-domain photometric sky surveys, the number of eclipsing white dwarf systems being discovered is increasing dramatically. An efficient method to follow these up will be key to determining any population trends and finding any particularly interesting examples. We demonstrate that multi-band eclipse photometry of binaries containing a white dwarf and an M~dwarf can be used to determine the masses and temperatures of the white dwarfs to better than 5 per cent. For the M~dwarfs we measure their parameters to a precision of better than 6 per cent with the uncertainty dominated by the intrinsic scatter of the M~dwarf mass-radius relationship. This precision is better than what can typically be achieved with low-resolution spectroscopy. The nature of this method means that it will be applicable to LSST data in the future, enabling direct characterisation without follow-up spectroscopy. Additionally, we characterise three new post-common-envelope binaries from their eclipse photometry, finding two systems containing hot helium-core white dwarfs with low-mass companions (one near the brown dwarf transition regime) and a possible detached cataclysmic variable at the lower edge of the period gap., Comment: 10 pages (and appendix), 5 figures, accepted to MNRAS

Abstract

A promising progenitor scenario for Type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) is the thermonuclear detonation of a white dwarf in a close binary system with another white dwarf. After the primary star explodes, the surviving donor can be spontaneously released as a hypervelocity runaway. One such runaway donor candidate is LP 398-9, whose orbital trajectory traces back $\approx 10^5$ years to a known supernova remnant. Here we report the discovery of carbon-rich circumstellar material around LP 398-9, revealed by a strong infrared excess and analyzed with follow-up spectroscopy. The circumstellar material is most plausibly composed of inflated layers from the star itself, mechanically and radioactively heated by the past companion's supernova. We also detect a 15.4 hr periodic signal in the UV and optical light curves of LP 398-9, which we interpret as surface rotation. The rotation rate is consistent with theoretical predictions from this supernova mechanism, and the brightness variations could originate from surface inhomogeneity deposited by the supernova itself. Our observations strengthen the case for this double-degenerate SNIa progenitor channel, and motivate the search for more runaway SNIa donors., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

Abstract

Despite being bright ($V=12$) and nearby ($d=212$ pc) ASAS J071404+7004.3 has only recently been identified as a nova-like cataclysmic variable. We present time-resolved optical spectroscopy obtained at the Isaac Newton Telescope together with $\textit{Swift}$ X-ray and ultraviolet observations. We combined these with $\textit{TESS}$ photometry and find a period of 3.28h and a mass transfer rate of $4-9 \times 10^{-9} M_{sun}/yr$. Historical photometry shows at least one low state establishing the system as a VY Scl star. Our high-cadence spectroscopy also revealed rapidly changing winds emanating from the accretion disc. We have modelled these using the Monte Carlo PYTHON code and shown that all the emission lines could emanate from the wind - which would explain the lack of double-peaked lines in such systems. Abstract

1-3 per cent of white dwarfs are orbited by planetary dusty debris detectable as infrared emission in excess above the white dwarf flux. In a rare subset of these systems, a gaseous disc component is also detected via emission lines of the Ca II 8600\r{A} triplet, broadened by the Keplerian velocity of the disc. We present the first statistical study of the fraction of debris discs containing detectable amounts of gas in emission at white dwarfs within a magnitude and signal-to-noise limited sample. We select 7705 single white dwarfs spectroscopically observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and $Gaia$ with magnitudes $g$ $\leq$ 19. We identify five gaseous disc hosts, all of which have been previously discovered. We calculate the occurrence rate of a white dwarf hosting a debris disc detectable via Ca II emission lines as 0.067$\pm$$_{0.025}^{0.042}$ per cent. This corresponds to an occurrence rate for a dusty debris disc to have an observable gaseous component in emission as 4$\pm$$_{2}^{4}$ per cent. Given that variability is a common feature of the emission profiles of gaseous debris discs, and the recent detection of a planetesimal orbiting within the disc of SDSSJ122859.93+104032.9, we propose that gaseous components are tracers for the presence of planetesimals embedded in the discs and outline a qualitative model. We also present spectroscopy of the Ca II triplet 8600\r{A} region for 20 white dwarfs hosting dusty debris discs in an attempt to identify gaseous emission. 7. Observations of compact binary systems

Abstract

In this thesis I study compact binary systems containing white dwarfs, looking at both detached systems and those that are accreting. These systems are representative of a diverse set of white dwarf binaries in the Galaxy, from which thermonuclear supernovae and other varieties of exotic stellar object emerge. Following a description of the observational techniques and data sources used, I begin with a study of a sample of white dwarfs that show evidence for excess infrared emission in their spectral energy distributions. The targets formed a subset of a larger sample after removal of systems resolved from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The period distribution ranges from 0.141 to 9.16 d and peaks near 0.6 d. The original sample therefore contains two sets of binaries, wide orbits (≈ 100 − 1000 au) and close orbits (. 1 − 10 au), with no systems found in the ≈ 10 − 100 au range. This observational evidence confirms the bimodal distribution predicted by population models and is also similar to results obtained in previous studies. I find no binary periods in the months to years range, supporting the post common envelope evolution scenario. The work on detached systems revealed the remarkable utility of modern wide-field photometric surveys. These are revealing rare and unusual types of white dwarf binary systems previously missed through faintness and inconspicuous photometric behaviour. I look at examples of these in the following three chapters. Chapter 4 presents a study of V1460 Her, a star only identified as an accreting binary following a rare, low amplitude outburst. V1460 Her is revealed as a remarkable system, which hosts a donor star far from thermal equilibrium, the remnant of a phase of rapid mass loss. In addition, its white dwarf shows a strong coherent signal on a period of 39 seconds in HST ultraviolet data. It shares these two aspects with the hitherto unique system AE Aqr which also has a rapidly spinning white dwarf, but, unlike V1460 Her, is propelling accreting matter out of the system altogether. Chapters 5 and 6 present new observations on magnetic CVs. V808 Aur is a polar is undergoing changes in its orbital period as is shown through ten years of photometric observations. I also derive masses for both components in the system and determine the spectral type of the donor. CRTS J215256.1+191658 is a newly discovered 3.9 hr period polar. I present high speed photometry showing the eclipse in both a high and low state and Doppler maps of the emission features revealing the flow of the accretion stream through the system.

Abstract

We present a search for optical bursts from the repeating fast radio burst FRB 121102 using simultaneous observations with the high-speed optical camera ULTRASPEC on the 2.4-m Thai National Telescope and radio observations with the 100-m Effelsberg Radio Telescope. A total of 13 radio bursts were detected, but we found no evidence for corresponding optical bursts in our 70.7-ms frames. The 5-sigma upper limit to the optical flux density during our observations is 0.33 mJy at 767nm. This gives an upper limit for the optical burst fluence of 0.046 Jy ms, which constrains the broadband spectral index of the burst emission to alpha < -0.2. Two of the radio pulses are separated by just 34 ms, which may represent an upper limit on a possible underlying periodicity (a rotation period typical of pulsars), or these pulses may have come from a single emission window that is a small fraction of a possible period., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

The Astropy Project (http://astropy.org) is, in its own words, "a community effort to develop a single core package for Astronomy in Python and foster interoperability between Python astronomy packages." For five years this project has been managed, written, and operated as a grassroots, self-organized, almost entirely volunteer effort while the software is used by the majority of the astronomical community. Despite this, the project has always been and remains to this day effectively unfunded. Further, contributors receive little or no formal recognition for creating and supporting what is now critical software. This paper explores the problem in detail, outlines possible solutions to correct this, and presents a few suggestions on how to address the sustainability of general purpose astronomical software.

14. NSV 1907 - A new eclipsing, nova-like cataclysmic variable

Abstract

NSV 1907, formerly listed as an irregular variable in variability catalogues, was classified as an Algol-type eclipsing binary in the Catalina Surveys Periodic Variable Star Catalogue. We have identified NSV 1907 as an ultraviolet (UV) bright source using measurements from the GALEX space telescope and detected obvious out-of-eclipse variability in archival photometric data from the Catalina Sky Survey, which instigated a closer examination of the object. A spectrum and extensive multicolour photometric observations were acquired, from which we deduce that NSV 1907 is a deeply eclipsing, nova-like cataclysmic variable. Apart from the orbital variations (deep eclipses with a period of P ~ 6.63 hours), changes in mean brightness and irregular short-term variability (flickering) were observed. The presence of a secondary minimum at phase phi ~ 0.5 was established, which indicates a significant contribution of the companion star to the optical flux of the system. We find possible evidence for sinusoidal variations with a period of P ~ 4.2 d, which we interpret as the nodal precession period of the accretion disc. No outbursts or VY Scl-like drops in brightness were detected either by the CSS or during our photometric monitoring. Because of its spectral characteristics and the observed variability pattern, we propose NSV 1907 as a new moderately bright long-period SW Sextantis star. 18. Experimental Investigation of Wave Attenuation Using a Hybrid of Polymer-Made Artificial Xbloc Wall and Mangrove Root Models

Abstract

Rising sea levels, strong wave currents and destructive human activities put coastal areas at risk of erosion and potential flooding. Several countermeasures have been introduced—both artificial and natural—to tackle the issue. This study investigated the effectiveness of the use of hybrid polymer-made artificial Xbloc walls and mangrove root models for protection against water waves. One Xbloc wall was made up of three Xbloc units stacked on top of each other and joined together using water-resistant tape. The artificial models were designed using SolidWorks and AutoCAD software, 3D printed, laser cut and then superglued. The experiment was conducted at Nottingham Trent University Laboratory with a varying combination of single/multiple Xbloc walls and mangrove root models. The change in the wavelength, height, celerity and period was observed for six different model arrangements. The results revealed a successful decrease in the celerity, height and wavelength, as well as the elongation of the wave period (one cycle time). The hybrid arrangement of one Xbloc wall and two mangrove roots provided the best protection, reducing the wavelength, celerity and height by 5.50%, 26.46% and 58.97%, respectively, and also delaying the wave period by 28.34%. The lowest attenuation in the entire wave parameters stated was observed for the arrangement containing only one set of mangrove roots model. Therefore, the wave attenuation using the combined action of 3D printed polymer-made Xbloc walls and mangrove roots was better, because it facilitated the dissipation of wave energy to a greater degree compared to the use of only Xbloc walls or mangrove roots separately.

Abstract

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, saw first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-deg field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366-959nm at R similar to 5000, or two shorter ranges at . After summarizing the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organization, science drivers, and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for similar to 3 million stars and detailed abundances for similar to 1.5 million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey similar to 0.4 million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects, and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey similar to 400 neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionized gas in z < 0.5 cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in field galaxies at 0.3 less than or similar to z less than or similar to 0.7; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using >1 million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; and (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at z > 2. Finally, we describe the WEAVE Operational Rehearsals using the WEAVE Simulator.

Abstract

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, saw first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-deg field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable ‘mini’ integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366–959 nm at R ∼ 5000, or two shorter ranges at R ∼ 20 000. After summarizing the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organization, science drivers, and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy’s origins by completing Gaia’s phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for ∼3 million stars and detailed abundances for ∼1.5 million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey ∼0.4 million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects, and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey ∼400 neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionized gas in z < 0.5 cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in ∼25 000 field galaxies at 0.3 ≲ z ≲ 0.7; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using >1 million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; and (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at z > 2. Finally, we describe the WEAVE Operational Rehearsals using the WEAVE Simulator.

22. A novel detection system using neutron/gamma pulse shape discrimination, for use in active interrogation environments

Abstract

Continuous improvements are being sought to identify special nuclear material more accurately. Active interrogation is a current field of research for this application, capable of penetrating shielding materials but which can feature a complex and challenging radiation field for detectors to operate in. This research was aimed at improving active interrogation techniques further by optimising experimental setups and procedures and reducing undesirable dead periods of acquisition which may be observed. The important outcomes from this research are listed below: • The creation of a new empirical fit to better represent the rising edge of pulses from both neutrons and gamma rays than the currently used Marrone fit (suited to the decay tail of pulses). • The ability to clearly distinguish a selection of gamma rays using this rise time technique post-processing previously acquired data consisting of a mixed radiation field. • The effect of angular orientation of liquid scintillators on FoM values after performing PSD techniques has been identified as well as sensitivity issues associated with the position of the nitrogen void within these detectors. • A novel gated organic plastic scintillator detector has been operated and controlled using a trigger circuit devised in this research. This circuit controlled whether the gated detector was active through the presence of light. • A radiation based detector was integrated with this trigger circuit controlling the gated detector by making the device inactive whenever a radiation count was observed.

23. Cognitive representations of form in pop music: A probabilistic grammarsapproach

Abstract

Cognitive representations of musical structure have long been of interest to psychologists and musicians. Thisproject addresses comprehension of and long-term memory for musical form, a debated topic in music cognition. We use threemethods: a corpus of Billboard magazine’s top 10 songs for each of the last 20 years; a probabilistic grammar derived fromthis corpus; and an experiment testing predictions of the grammar. Two statistical analyses of the corpus are presented here,dealing with its zero- and first-order Markov properties. These provide a probablistic grammar of form in popular songs. Wehave tested this grammar by prompted recall of listeners’ memory for popular songs they claim to know well. Recalls averageover 70% correct; errors in these recalls most often correspond to low-frequency 2-tuples in our networks. Our results showthat listeners learn statistical regularities of form in popular music, much as they learn melodic and harmonic structure.

Abstract

Our knowledge of the genetic contribution to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is rapidly growing, and there is increasing research into how ALS spreads through the motor system and beyond. This thesis examines how genetic and non-genetic factors in ALS influence its spread. The genetic methods employed were PCR, genotyping, AFLP, DNA sequencing and gene expression. The methods to examine spread were H&E staining, clinical history, age of onset (AOO), survival and health utility. Statistical procedures applied included regression analyses of genetic and non-genetic factors, maximum likelihood estimation of genetic-phenotype variance and health utility, RNA-sequence analyses, and differential gene expression analysis. I found (A) that variation in the ATXN2 gene contributes to ALS, as does variation in C9ORF72 after correcting for the known C9ORF72 pathological hexanucleotide repeat (HREM). (B) On comparing regions of the spinal cord, patterns of differential gene expression between ALS cases and controls appeared consistent with spread and pathology. Functional annotation clustering revealed these genes were mostly involved in blood vessel and angiogenin-like function, glycoprotein-based activity, and leukocyte activity. (C) A significant proportion of survival variance in ALS could be explained by genetic variance. There were SNPs that predicted survival and AOO, one showing epistasis with the C9ORF72 HREM. (D) When modelling ALS progression using staging and a clinical trial dataset, the time and duration of each stage was statistically predictable. Staging also predicted health utility and other functional and psycho- metrics. The spread and pathology in ALS spinal cord regions affected gene expression profiles, which is likely a consequence of genetic susceptibility in that region. Indicators of spread, AOO and survival, could be predicted using genotypes. Disease progression was predictable as measured by clinical staging and health metrics. In summary, ALS spread seems to occur at a fixed rate in an individual and is influenced by genetics.

41. Sustainability performance of bioretention systems with various designs

Abstract

Bioretention systems for urban drainage are one type of blue-green infrastructure that have gained more attention in recent decades. There are numerous design options for these systems, including various construction components, filter material mixtures, and plants. However, the research focus on the impacts of these many design options has mainly been technical, i.e., how different bioretention designs affect runoff pollution treatment and hydraulic control. Knowledge of the effects of various design elements on other sustainability criteria, such as economic, social, and environmental aspects, needs to be developed. This research aimed to evaluate and compare various design elements and bioretention types to gain a better understanding of the relative sustainability of various bioretention systems. This was accomplished by identifying relevant criteria and sub-criteria, covering social, economic, and technical-environmental indicators, in a multicriteria analysis. To evaluate the sustainability performance of various bioretention designs, 12 sub-criteria were allotted −100 to 100 points in a scoring process. The main finding was that while design features had a major impact on bioretention performance, no single design configuration excelled in all criteria. High scores in the social criteria were correlated with the use of trees and smaller volumes of pumice in the filter material mixture. In the economic criteria, extensive use of concrete and a complex mixture of filter material increased the costs. The system with a water-saturated zone and a variety of plant species outperformed the other systems in the technical-environmental criteria. Abstract

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable ‘mini’ integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366−959 nm at R ∼ 5000, or two shorter ranges at R ∼ 20 000. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy’s origins by completing Gaia’s phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for ∼3 million stars and detailed abundances for ∼1.5 million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey ∼0.4 million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey ∼400 neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in z < 0.5 cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in ∼25 000 field galaxies at 0.3 ≲ z ≲ 0.7; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using >1 million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at z > 2. Finally, we describe the WEAVE Operational Rehearsals using the WEAVE Simulator.
