Population balance equation (PBE) models have potential to automate many engineering processes with far-reaching implications. In the pharmaceutical sector, crystallization model-based design can contribute to shortening excessive drug development timelines. Even so, two major barriers, typical of most transport equations, not just PBEs, have limited this potential. Notably, the time taken to compute a solution to these models with representative accuracy is frequently limiting. Likewise, the model construction process is often tedious and wastes valuable time, owing to the reliance on human expertise to guess constituent models from empirical data. Hybrid models promise to overcome both barriers through tight integration of neural networks with physical PBE models. Towards eliminating experimental guesswork, hybrid models facilitate determining physical relationships from data, also known as 'discovering physics'. Here, we aim to prepare for planned Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) integration through a contemporary implementation of an existing PBE algorithm, one with computational efficiency and differentiability at the forefront. To accomplish this, we utilized JAX, a cutting-edge library for accelerated computing. We showcase the speed benefits of this modern take on PBE modelling by benchmarking our solver to others we prepared using older, more widespread software. Primarily among these software tools is the ubiquitous NumPy, where we show JAX achieves up to 300x relative acceleration in PBE simulations. Our solver is also fully differentiable, which we demonstrate is the only feasible option for integrating learnable data-driven models at scale. We show that differentiability can be 40x faster for optimizing larger models than conventional approaches, which represents the key to neural network integration for physics discovery in later work.

In this paper, we introduce the first release of a large-scale dataset capturing discourse on $\mathbb{X}$ (a.k.a., Twitter) related to the upcoming 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. Our dataset comprises 22 million publicly available posts on X.com, collected from May 1, 2024, to July 31, 2024, using a custom-built scraper, which we describe in detail. By employing targeted keywords linked to key political figures, events, and emerging issues, we aligned data collection with the election cycle to capture evolving public sentiment and the dynamics of political engagement on social media. This dataset offers researchers a robust foundation to investigate critical questions about the influence of social media in shaping political discourse, the propagation of election-related narratives, and the spread of misinformation. We also present a preliminary analysis that highlights prominent hashtags and keywords within the dataset, offering initial insights into the dominant themes and conversations occurring in the lead-up to the election. In real-world applications, the distribution of the data, and our goals, evolve over time. The prevailing theoretical framework for studying machine learning, namely probably approximately correct (PAC) learning, largely ignores time. As a consequence, existing strategies to address the dynamic nature of data and goals exhibit poor real-world performance. This paper develops a theoretical framework called "Prospective Learning" that is tailored for situations when the optimal hypothesis changes over time. In PAC learning, empirical risk minimization (ERM) is known to be consistent. We develop a learner called Prospective ERM, which returns a sequence of predictors that make predictions on future data. We prove that the risk of prospective ERM converges to the Bayes risk under certain assumptions on the stochastic process generating the data. Prospective ERM, roughly speaking, incorporates time as an input in addition to the data. We show that standard ERM as done in PAC learning, without incorporating time, can result in failure to learn when distributions are dynamic. Recent advancements in Large Language Model (LLM)-based frameworks have extended their capabilities to complex real-world applications, such as interactive web navigation. These systems, driven by user commands, navigate web browsers to complete tasks through multi-turn dialogues, offering both innovative opportunities and significant challenges. Despite the introduction of benchmarks for conversational web navigation, a detailed understanding of the key contextual components that influence the performance of these agents remains elusive. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing the various contextual elements crucial to the functioning of web navigation agents. We investigate the optimization of context management, focusing on the influence of interaction history and web page representation. Our work highlights improved agent performance across out-of-distribution scenarios, including unseen websites, categories, and geographic locations through effective context management. Enhancing and preserving the readability of document images, particularly historical ones, is crucial for effective document image analysis. Numerous models have been proposed for this task, including convolutional-based, transformer-based, and hybrid convolutional-transformer architectures. While hybrid models address the limitations of purely convolutional or transformer-based methods, they often suffer from issues like quadratic time complexity. In this work, we propose a Mamba-based architecture for document binarisation, which efficiently handles long sequences by scaling linearly and optimizing memory usage. Additionally, we introduce novel modifications to the skip connections by incorporating Difference of Gaussians (DoG) features, inspired by conventional signal processing techniques. These multiscale high-frequency features enable the model to produce high-quality, detailed outputs.

Our interest is in constructing interactive systems involving a human-expert interacting with a machine learning engine on data analysis tasks. This is of relevance when addressing complex problems arising in areas of science, the environment, medicine and so on, which are not immediately amenable to the usual methods of statistical or mathematical modelling. In such situations, it is possible that harnessing human expertise and creativity to modern machine-learning capabilities of identifying patterns by constructing new internal representations of the data may provide some insight to possible solutions. In this paper, we examine the implementation of an abstract protocol developed for interaction between agents, each capable of constructing predictions and explanations. The \PXP protocol, described in [12] is motivated by the notion of ''two-way intelligibility'' and is specified using a pair of communicating finite-state machines. While the formalisation allows the authors to prove several properties about the protocol, no implementation was presented. Here, we address this shortcoming for the case in which one of the agents acts as a ''generator'' using a large language model (LLM) and the other is an agent that acts as a ''tester'' using either a human-expert, or a proxy for a human-expert (for example, a database compiled using human-expertise). We believe these use-cases will be a widely applicable form of interaction for problems of the kind mentioned above. We present an algorithmic description of general-purpose implementation, and conduct preliminary experiments on its use in two different areas (radiology and drug-discovery). The experimental results provide early evidence in support of the protocol's capability of capturing one- and two-way intelligibility in human-LLM in the manner proposed in [12].

Image and video generative models that are pre-trained on Internet-scale data can greatly increase the generalization capacity of robot learning systems. These models can function as high-level planners, generating intermediate subgoals for low-level goal-conditioned policies to reach. However, the performance of these systems can be greatly bottlenecked by the interface between generative models and low-level controllers. For example, generative models may predict photorealistic yet physically infeasible frames that confuse low-level policies. Low-level policies may also be sensitive to subtle visual artifacts in generated goal images. This paper addresses these two facets of generalization, providing an interface to effectively "glue together" language-conditioned image or video prediction models with low-level goal-conditioned policies. Our method, Generative Hierarchical Imitation Learning-Glue (GHIL-Glue), filters out subgoals that do not lead to task progress and improves the robustness of goal-conditioned policies to generated subgoals with harmful visual artifacts. We find in extensive experiments in both simulated and real environments that GHIL-Glue achieves a 25% improvement across several hierarchical models that leverage generative subgoals, achieving a new state-of-the-art on the CALVIN simulation benchmark for policies using observations from a single RGB camera. The Ocean Color Monitor-3 (OCM-3) sensor is instrumental in Earth observation, achieving a critical balance between high-resolution imaging and broad coverage. This paper explores innovative imaging methods employed in OCM-3 and the transformative potential of super-resolution techniques to enhance image quality. The super-resolution model for OCM-3 (SOCM-3) addresses the challenges of contemporary satellite imaging by effectively navigating the trade-off between image clarity and swath width. With resolutions below 240 meters in Local Area Coverage (LAC) mode and below 750 meters in Global Area Coverage (GAC) mode, coupled with a wide 1550-kilometer swath and a 2-day revisit time, SOCM-3 emerges as a leading asset in remote sensing. The paper details the intricate interplay of atmospheric, motion, optical, and detector effects that impact image quality, emphasizing the necessity for advanced computational techniques and sophisticated algorithms for effective image reconstruction. Evaluation methods are thoroughly discussed, incorporating visual assessments using the Blind/Referenceless Image Spatial Quality Evaluator (BRISQUE) metric and computational metrics such as Line Spread Function (LSF), Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM), and Super-Resolution (SR) ratio. Additionally, statistical analyses, including power spectrum evaluations and target-wise spectral signatures, are employed to gauge the efficacy of super-resolution techniques. By enhancing both spatial resolution and revisit frequency, this study highlights significant advancements in remote sensing capabilities, providing valuable insights for applications across cryospheric, vegetation, oceanic, coastal, and domains. Pre-trained language models (PLMs) are trained on large amounts of data, which helps capture world knowledge alongside linguistic competence. Due to this, they are extensively used for ultra-fine entity typing tasks, where they provide the entity knowledge held in its parameter space. Given that PLMs learn from co-occurrence patterns, they likely contain more knowledge or less knowledge about entities depending on their how frequent they are in the pre-training data. In this work, we probe PLMs to elicit encoded entity probabilities and demonstrate that they highly correlate with their frequency in large-scale internet data. Then, we demonstrate that entity-typing approaches that rely on PLMs struggle with entities at the long tail on the distribution. Our findings suggests that we need to go beyond PLMs to produce solutions that perform well for rare, new or infrequent entities.

Fake news threatens democracy and exacerbates the polarization and divisions in society; therefore, accurately detecting online misinformation is the foundation of addressing this issue. We present CrediRAG, the first fake news detection model that combines language models with access to a rich external political knowledge base with a dense social network to detect fake news across social media at scale. CrediRAG uses a news retriever to initially assign a misinformation score to each post based on the source credibility of similar news articles to the post title content. CrediRAG then improves the initial retrieval estimations through a novel weighted post-to-post network connected based on shared commenters and weighted by the average stance of all shared commenters across every pair of posts. We achieve 11% increase in the F1-score in detecting misinformative posts over state-of-the-art methods. Extensive experiments conducted on curated real-world Reddit data of over 200,000 posts demonstrate the superior performance of CrediRAG on existing baselines. Thus, our approach offers a more accurate and scalable solution to combat the spread of fake news across social media platforms.

We tackle the problem of quantifying failure probabilities for expensive computer experiments with stochastic inputs. The computational cost of evaluating the computer simulation prohibits direct Monte Carlo (MC) and necessitates a statistical surrogate model. Surrogate-informed importance sampling -- which leverages the surrogate to identify suspected failures, fits a bias distribution to these locations, then calculates failure probabilities using a weighted average -- is popular, but it is data hungry and can provide erroneous results when budgets are limited. Instead, we propose a hybrid MC scheme which first uses the uncertainty quantification (UQ) of a Gaussian process (GP) surrogate to identify areas of high classification uncertainty, then combines surrogate predictions in certain regions with true simulator evaluation in uncertain regions. We also develop a stopping criterion which informs the allocation of a fixed budget of simulator evaluations between surrogate training and failure probability estimation. Our method is agnostic to surrogate choice (as long as UQ is provided); we showcase functionality with both GPs and deep GPs. It is also agnostic to design choices; we deploy contour locating sequential designs throughout. With these tools, we are able to effectively estimate small failure probabilities with only hundreds of simulator evaluations. Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly being explored for their potential in software engineering, particularly in static analysis tasks. In this study, we investigate the potential of current LLMs to enhance call-graph analysis and type inference for Python and JavaScript programs. We empirically evaluated 24 LLMs, including OpenAI's GPT series and open-source models like LLaMA and Mistral, using existing and newly developed benchmarks. Specifically, we enhanced TypeEvalPy, a micro-benchmarking framework for type inference in Python, with auto-generation capabilities, expanding its scope from 860 to 77,268 type annotations for Python. Additionally, we introduced SWARM-CG and SWARM-JS, comprehensive benchmarking suites for evaluating call-graph construction tools across multiple programming languages. Our findings reveal a contrasting performance of LLMs in static analysis tasks. For call-graph generation in Python, traditional static analysis tools like PyCG significantly outperform LLMs. In JavaScript, the static tool TAJS underperforms due to its inability to handle modern language features, while LLMs, despite showing potential with models like mistral-large-it-2407-123b and GPT-4o, struggle with completeness and soundness in both languages for call-graph analysis. Conversely, LLMs demonstrate a clear advantage in type inference for Python, surpassing traditional tools like HeaderGen and hybrid approaches such as HiTyper. These results suggest that while LLMs hold promise in type inference, their limitations in call-graph analysis highlight the need for further research. We develop formal privacy mechanisms for releasing statistics from data with many outlying values, such as income data. These mechanisms ensure that a per-record differential privacy guarantee degrades slowly in the protected records' influence on the statistics being released. Formal privacy mechanisms generally add randomness, or "noise," to published statistics. If a noisy statistic's distribution changes little with the addition or deletion of a single record in the underlying dataset, an attacker looking at this statistic will find it plausible that any particular record was present or absent, preserving the records' privacy. More influential records -- those whose addition or deletion would change the statistics' distribution more -- typically suffer greater privacy loss. The per-record differential privacy framework quantifies these record-specific privacy guarantees, but existing mechanisms let these guarantees degrade rapidly (linearly or quadratically) with influence. While this may be acceptable in cases with some moderately influential records, it results in unacceptably high privacy losses when records' influence varies widely, as is common in economic data. We develop mechanisms with privacy guarantees that instead degrade as slowly as logarithmically with influence. These mechanisms allow for the accurate, unbiased release of statistics, while providing meaningful protection for highly influential records. As an example, we consider the private release of sums of unbounded establishment data such as payroll, where our mechanisms extend meaningful privacy protection even to very large establishments. We evaluate these mechanisms empirically and demonstrate their utility.

Building semantic 3D maps is valuable for searching for objects of interest in offices, warehouses, stores, and homes. We present a mapping system that incrementally builds a Language-Embedded Gaussian Splat (LEGS): a detailed 3D scene representation that encodes both appearance and semantics in a unified representation. LEGS is trained online as a robot traverses its environment to enable localization of open-vocabulary object queries. We evaluate LEGS on 4 room-scale scenes where we query for objects in the scene to assess how LEGS can capture semantic meaning. We compare LEGS to LERF and find that while both systems have comparable object query success rates, LEGS trains over 3.5x faster than LERF. Results suggest that a multi-camera setup and incremental bundle adjustment can boost visual reconstruction quality in constrained robot trajectories, and suggest LEGS can localize open-vocabulary and long-tail object queries with up to 66% accuracy.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable capabilities in natural language processing, and yet, their factual inaccuracies and hallucinations limits their application, particularly in critical domains like healthcare. Context retrieval methods, by introducing relevant information as input, have emerged as a crucial approach for enhancing LLM factuality and reliability. This study explores the boundaries of context retrieval methods within the healthcare domain, optimizing their components and benchmarking their performance against open and closed alternatives. Our findings reveal how open LLMs, when augmented with an optimized retrieval system, can achieve performance comparable to the biggest private solutions on established healthcare benchmarks (multiple-choice question answering). Recognizing the lack of realism of including the possible answers within the question (a setup only found in medical exams), and after assessing a strong LLM performance degradation in the absence of those options, we extend the context retrieval system in that direction. We present Vercel, a network verification and automatic fault rectification tool that is based on a computationally tractable, algorithmically expressive, and mathematically aesthetic domain of linear algebra. Vercel works on abstracting out packet headers into standard basis vectors that are used to create a port-specific forwarding matrix $\mathcal{A}$, representing a set of packet headers/prefixes that a router forwards along a port. By equating this matrix $\mathcal{A}$ and a vector $b$ (that represents the set of all headers under consideration), we are able to apply \textit{least squares} (which produces a column rank agnostic solution) to compute which headers are reachable at the destination. Reachability now simply means evaluating if vector $b$ is in the column space of $\mathcal{A}$, which can efficiently be computed using least squares. Further, the use of vector representation and least squares opens new possibilities for understanding network behavior. For example, we are able to map rules, routing policies, what-if scenarios to the fundamental linear algebraic form, $\mathcal{A}x=b$, as well as determine how to configure forwarding tables appropriately. We show Vercel is faster than the state-of-art such as NetPlumber, Veriflow, APKeep, AP Verifier, when measured over diverse datasets. Vercel is almost as fast as Deltanet, when rules are verified in batches and provides better scalability, expressiveness and memory efficiency. A key highlight of Vercel is that while evaluating for reachability, the tool can incorporate intents, and transform these into auto-configurable table entries, implying a recommendation/correction system.

The class of graph deletion problems has been extensively studied in theoretical computer science, particularly in the field of parameterized complexity. Recently, a new notion of graph deletion problems was introduced, called deletion to scattered graph classes, where after deletion, each connected component of the graph should belong to at least one of the given graph classes. While fixed-parameter algorithms were given for a wide variety of problems, little progress has been made on the kernelization complexity of any of them. In this paper, we present the first non-trivial polynomial kernel for one such deletion problem, where, after deletion, each connected component should be a clique or a tree - that is, as densest as possible or as sparsest as possible (while being connected). 6D object pose estimation involves determining the three-dimensional translation and rotation of an object within a scene and relative to a chosen coordinate system. This problem is of particular interest for many practical applications in industrial tasks such as quality control, bin picking, and robotic manipulation, where both speed and accuracy are critical for real-world deployment. Current models, both classical and deep-learning-based, often struggle with the trade-off between accuracy and latency. Our research focuses on enhancing the speed of a prominent state-of-the-art deep learning model, GDRNPP, while keeping its high accuracy. We employ several techniques to reduce the model size and improve inference time. These techniques include using smaller and quicker backbones, pruning unnecessary parameters, and distillation to transfer knowledge from a large, high-performing model to a smaller, more efficient student model. Our findings demonstrate that the proposed configuration maintains accuracy comparable to the state-of-the-art while significantly improving inference time. This advancement could lead to more efficient and practical applications in various industrial scenarios, thereby enhancing the overall applicability of 6D Object Pose Estimation models in real-world settings.

One of the most intriguing 6G vertical markets is precision agriculture, where communications, sensing, control, and robotics technologies are used to improve agricultural outputs and decrease environmental impact. Ambient IoT (A-IoT), which uses a network of devices that harvest ambient energy to enable communications, is expected to play an important role in agricultural use cases due to its low costs, simplicity, and battery-free (or battery-assisted) operation. In this paper, we review the use cases of precision agriculture and discuss the challenges. We discuss how A-IoT can be used for precision agriculture and compare it with other ambient energy source technologies. Advances in microscopy imaging enable researchers to visualize structures at the nanoscale level thereby unraveling intricate details of biological organization. However, challenges such as image noise, photobleaching of fluorophores, and low tolerability of biological samples to high light doses remain, restricting temporal resolutions and experiment durations. Reduced laser doses enable longer measurements at the cost of lower resolution and increased noise, which hinders accurate downstream analyses. Here we train a denoising diffusion probabilistic model (DDPM) to predict high-resolution images by conditioning the model on low-resolution information. Additionally, the probabilistic aspect of the DDPM allows for repeated generation of images that tend to further increase the signal-to-noise ratio. We show that our model achieves a performance that is better or similar to the previously best-performing methods, across four highly diverse datasets. Importantly, while any of the previous methods show competitive performance for some, but not all datasets, our method consistently achieves high performance across all four data sets, suggesting high generalizability.

There has been much recent interest in designing symmetry-aware neural networks (NNs) exhibiting relaxed equivariance. Such NNs aim to interpolate between being exactly equivariant and being fully flexible, affording consistent performance benefits. In a separate line of work, certain structured parameter matrices -- those with displacement structure, characterized by low displacement rank (LDR) -- have been used to design small-footprint NNs. Displacement structure enables fast function and gradient evaluation, but permits accurate approximations via compression primarily to classical convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In this work, we propose a general framework -- based on a novel construction of symmetry-based structured matrices -- to build approximately equivariant NNs with significantly reduced parameter counts. Our framework integrates the two aforementioned lines of work via the use of so-called Group Matrices (GMs), a forgotten precursor to the modern notion of regular representations of finite groups. GMs allow the design of structured matrices -- resembling LDR matrices -- which generalize the linear operations of a classical CNN from cyclic groups to general finite groups and their homogeneous spaces. We show that GMs can be employed to extend all the elementary operations of CNNs to general discrete groups. Further, the theory of structured matrices based on GMs provides a generalization of LDR theory focussed on matrices with cyclic structure, providing a tool for implementing approximate equivariance for discrete groups. We test GM-based architectures on a variety of tasks in the presence of relaxed symmetry. We report that our framework consistently performs competitively compared to approximately equivariant NNs, and other structured matrix-based compression frameworks, sometimes with a one or two orders of magnitude lower parameter count., Comment: 20 pages

Instruction-tuned language models (LM) are able to respond to imperative commands, providing a more natural user interface compared to their base counterparts. In this work, we present Promptriever, the first retrieval model able to be prompted like an LM. To train Promptriever, we curate and release a new instance-level instruction training set from MS MARCO, spanning nearly 500k instances. Promptriever not only achieves strong performance on standard retrieval tasks, but also follows instructions. We observe: (1) large gains (reaching SoTA) on following detailed relevance instructions (+14.3 p-MRR / +3.1 nDCG on FollowIR), (2) significantly increased robustness to lexical choices/phrasing in the query+instruction (+12.9 Robustness@10 on InstructIR), and (3) the ability to perform hyperparameter search via prompting to reliably improve retrieval performance (+1.4 average increase on BEIR). Promptriever demonstrates that retrieval models can be controlled with prompts on a per-query basis, setting the stage for future work aligning LM prompting techniques with information retrieval.

Laser surface remelting of as-cast Al-Ge eutectic alloy is shown to produce ultrafine lamellar eutectic morphology with interlamellar spacing refined up to ~60 nm and composed of FCC Al solid solution and unusual AlxGey intermetallic phases that do not form during near-equilibrium solidification. The microstructures are characterized and analyzed using a combination of selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to obtain high-resolution elemental maps, and atomistic modeling using density functional theory followed by atomic-scale image simulation. Depending on the local solidification conditions, the crystallography of the AlxGey intermetallic phases in the eutectic microstructure is either monoclinic (C 2/c) or monoclinic (P 21), with high densities of defects in both cases. This is in sharp contrast to the as-cast alloys that showed nominally pure Al and Ge phases with significant solute partitioning and equilibrium FCC and diamond cubic crystal structures, respectively. Corresponding kinetic phase diagrams are proposed to interpret the evolution of nano-lamellar eutectic morphologies with equilibrium Al and metastable AlxGey phases, and to explain increased solid solubility in the Al phases manifested by precipitation of ultrafine clusters of Ge. The reasons for the formation of these metastable eutectics under laser rapid solidification are discussed from the perspective of the competitive growth criterion.

Nonlinear dynamical systems exposed to changing forcing can exhibit catastrophic transitions between alternative and often markedly different states. The phenomenon of critical slowing down (CSD) can be used to anticipate such transitions if caused by a bifurcation and if the change in forcing is slow compared to the internal time scale of the system. However, in many real-world situations, these assumptions are not met and transitions can be triggered because the forcing exceeds a critical rate. For example, given the pace of anthropogenic climate change in comparison to the internal time scales of key Earth system components, such as the polar ice sheets or the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, such rate-induced tipping poses a severe risk. Moreover, depending on the realisation of random perturbations, some trajectories may transition across an unstable boundary, while others do not, even under the same forcing. CSD-based indicators generally cannot distinguish these cases of noise-induced tipping versus no tipping. This severely limits our ability to assess the risks of tipping, and to predict individual trajectories. To address this, we make a first attempt to develop a deep learning framework to predict transition probabilities of dynamical systems ahead of rate-induced transitions. Our method issues early warnings, as demonstrated on three prototypical systems for rate-induced tipping, subjected to time-varying equilibrium drift and noise perturbations. Exploiting explainable artificial intelligence methods, our framework captures the fingerprints necessary for early detection of rate-induced tipping, even in cases of long lead times. Our findings demonstrate the predictability of rate-induced and noise-induced tipping, advancing our ability to determine safe operating spaces for a broader class of dynamical systems than possible so far.

Recent advancements in text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis show that large-scale models trained with extensive web data produce highly natural-sounding output. However, such data is scarce for Indian languages due to the lack of high-quality, manually subtitled data on platforms like LibriVox or YouTube. To address this gap, we enhance existing large-scale ASR datasets containing natural conversations collected in low-quality environments to generate high-quality TTS training data. Our pipeline leverages the cross-lingual generalization of denoising and speech enhancement models trained on English and applied to Indian languages. This results in IndicVoices-R (IV-R), the largest multilingual Indian TTS dataset derived from an ASR dataset, with 1,704 hours of high-quality speech from 10,496 speakers across 22 Indian languages. IV-R matches the quality of gold-standard TTS datasets like LJSpeech, LibriTTS, and IndicTTS. We also introduce the IV-R Benchmark, the first to assess zero-shot, few-shot, and many-shot speaker generalization capabilities of TTS models on Indian voices, ensuring diversity in age, gender, and style. We demonstrate that fine-tuning an English pre-trained model on a combined dataset of high-quality IndicTTS and our IV-R dataset results in better zero-shot speaker generalization compared to fine-tuning on the IndicTTS dataset alone. Further, our evaluation reveals limited zero-shot generalization for Indian voices in TTS models trained on prior datasets, which we improve by fine-tuning the model on our data containing diverse set of speakers across language families. Autonomous mobile robots have many applications in indoor unstructured environment, wherein optimal movement of the robot is needed. The robot therefore needs to navigate in unknown and dynamic environments. This paper presents an implementation of fuzzy logic controller for navigation of mobile robot in an unknown dynamically cluttered environment. Fuzzy logic controller is used here as it is capable of making inferences even under uncertainties. It helps in rule generation and decision making process in order to reach the goal position under various situations. Sensor readings from the robot and the desired direction of motion are inputs to the fuzz logic controllers and the acceleration of the respective wheels are the output of the controller. The Baxter robot is a standard research platform used widely in research tasks, supported with an SDK provided by the developers, Rethink Robotics. Despite the ubiquitous use of the robot, the official software support is sub-standard. Especially, the native IK service has a low success rate and is often inconsistent. This unreliable behavior makes Baxter difficult to use for experiments and the research community is in need of a more reliable software support to control the robot. We present our work towards creating a Python based software library supporting the kinematics and dynamics of the Baxter robot. Our toolbox contains implementation of pose and velocity kinematics with support for Jacobian operations for redundancy resolution. We present the implementation and performance of our library, along with a comparison with PyKDL. This article introduces a novel distributionally robust model predictive control (DRMPC) algorithm for a specific class of controlled dynamical systems where the disturbance multiplies the state and control variables. These classes of systems arise in mathematical finance, where the paradigm of distributionally robust optimization (DRO) fits perfectly, and this serves as the primary motivation for this work. We recast the optimal control problem (OCP) as a semi-definite program with an infinite number of constraints, making the ensuing optimization problem a \emph{semi-infinite semi-definite program} (SI-SDP). To numerically solve the SI-SDP, we advance an approach for solving convex semi-infinite programs (SIPs) to SI-SDPs and, subsequently, solve the DRMPC problem. We investigate the irregular eutectic growth dynamics of the Al-Al3Ni alloy, in which one of the solid phases (Al3Ni) grows faceted from the liquid. Leveraging in situ optical microscopy and synchrotron transmission x-ray microscopy, we address the question of the degree of coupling between Al and Al3Ni at the growth front and that of the shape of the microstructures left behind in the bulk solid during directional solidification. Real-time optical observations bring evidence for a morphological transition from a eutectic-grain dependent, irregular eutectic growth at low solidification velocity V (typically 1 ${\mu}ms^{-1}$), to a weakly anisotropic, regular growth at higher V (reaching 10 ${\mu}ms^{-1}$). Unprecedented x-ray nano-imaging of the solid-liquid interface, and 3D characterization of the growth patterns, were made possible by a new Directional Solidification (DS) setup at Brookhaven National Laboratory's NSLS-II. At low V, the leading tips of partly faceted Al3Ni crystals are observed to grow not far ahead of the Al growth front. Correlating in situ images and postmortem 3D tomographic reconstructions reveals that the presence of faceted and non-faceted regions of Al3Ni crystals in the solid is a direct consequence of coupling and decoupling during DS, respectively. Upon increasing V , the lead distance of Al3Ni vanishes, and the shape of Al3Ni ceases to be governed by faceted growth. These observations shed light on the basic mechanisms (faceted growth, diffusive coupling, and the dynamics of trijunctions) governing the transition from faceted to rod-like growth upon increasing V in the Al3Ni system, with broad implications for a large class of irregular eutectics., Comment: 56 pages, 20 figures, preprint accepted to Acta Materialia

With recent rapid growth in online shopping, AI-powered Engagement Surfaces (ES) have become ubiquitous across retail services. These engagement surfaces perform an increasing range of functions, including recommending new products for purchase, reminding customers of their orders and providing delivery notifications. Understanding the causal effect of engagement surfaces on value driven for customers and businesses remains an open scientific question. In this paper, we develop a dynamic causal model at scale to disentangle value attributable to an ES, and to assess its effectiveness. This paper presents a first-order distributed algorithm for solving a convex semi-infinite program (SIP) over a time-varying network. In this setting, the objective function associated with the optimization problem is a summation of a set of functions, each held by one node in a network. The semi-infinite constraint, on the other hand, is known to all agents. The nodes collectively aim to solve the problem using local data about the objective and limited communication capabilities depending on the network topology. Our algorithm is built on three key ingredients: consensus step, gradient descent in the local objective, and local gradient descent iterations in the constraint at a node when the estimate violates the semi-infinite constraint. The algorithm is constructed, and its parameters are prescribed in such a way that the iterates held by each agent provably converge to an optimizer. That is, as the algorithm progresses, the estimates achieve consensus, and the constraint violation and the error in the optimal value are bounded above by vanishing terms. We study the capability of Video-Language (VidL) models in understanding compositions between objects, attributes, actions and their relations. Composition understanding becomes particularly challenging for video data since the compositional relations rapidly change over time in videos. We first build a benchmark named AARO to evaluate composition understanding related to actions on top of spatial concepts. The benchmark is constructed by generating negative texts with incorrect action descriptions for a given video and the model is expected to pair a positive text with its corresponding video. Furthermore, we propose a training method called NAVERO which utilizes video-text data augmented with negative texts to enhance composition understanding. We also develop a negative-augmented visual-language matching loss which is used explicitly to benefit from the generated negative text. We compare NAVERO with other state-of-the-art methods in terms of compositional understanding as well as video-text retrieval performance. NAVERO achieves significant improvement over other methods for both video-language and image-language composition understanding, while maintaining strong performance on traditional text-video retrieval tasks.

Hand-crafting high quality prompts to optimize the performance of language models is a complicated and labor-intensive process. Furthermore, when migrating to newer, smaller, or weaker models (possibly due to latency or cost gains), prompts need to be updated to re-optimize the task performance. We propose Concept Distillation (CD), an automatic prompt optimization technique for enhancing weaker models on complex tasks. CD involves: (1) collecting mistakes made by weak models with a base prompt (initialization), (2) using a strong model to generate reasons for these mistakes and create rules/concepts for weak models (induction), and (3) filtering these rules based on validation set performance and integrating them into the base prompt (deduction/verification). We evaluated CD on NL2Code and mathematical reasoning tasks, observing significant performance boosts for small and weaker language models. Notably, Mistral-7B's accuracy on Multi-Arith increased by 20%, and Phi-3-mini-3.8B's accuracy on HumanEval rose by 34%. Machine learning has driven an exponential increase in computational demand, leading to massive data centers that consume significant amounts of energy and contribute to climate change. This makes sustainable data center control a priority. In this paper, we introduce SustainDC, a set of Python environments for benchmarking multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithms for data centers (DC). SustainDC supports custom DC configurations and tasks such as workload scheduling, cooling optimization, and auxiliary battery management, with multiple agents managing these operations while accounting for the effects of each other. We evaluate various MARL algorithms on SustainDC, showing their performance across diverse DC designs, locations, weather conditions, grid carbon intensity, and workload requirements. Our results highlight significant opportunities for improvement of data center operations using MARL algorithms. Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems are powered by foundation models. This paper presents a new set of foundation models, called Llama 3. It is a herd of language models that natively support multilinguality, coding, reasoning, and tool usage. Our largest model is a dense Transformer with 405B parameters and a context window of up to 128K tokens. This paper presents an extensive empirical evaluation of Llama 3. We find that Llama 3 delivers comparable quality to leading language models such as GPT-4 on a plethora of tasks. We publicly release Llama 3, including pre-trained and post-trained versions of the 405B parameter language model and our Llama Guard 3 model for input and output safety. The paper also presents the results of experiments in which we integrate image, video, and speech capabilities into Llama 3 via a compositional approach. We observe this approach performs competitively with the state-of-the-art on image, video, and speech recognition tasks. The resulting models are not yet being broadly released as they are still under development.

This paper studies performance of various types of relay nodes in a 5G wireless network: conventional amplify-forward repeaters, (semi-)smart/smart amplify-forward repeaters with different levels of side information, and half-duplex/full-duplex decode-forward relay nodes with and without spatial reuse. End-to-end effective signal to interference and noise ratios (SINRs) and achievable rates are derived for these different types of relay nodes. Performance and complexity tradeoffs are discussed with a simulation over a Manhattan topology setting. Persona agents, which are LLM agents that act according to an assigned persona, have demonstrated impressive contextual response capabilities across various applications. These persona agents offer significant enhancements across diverse sectors, such as education, healthcare, and entertainment, where model developers can align agent responses to different user requirements thereby broadening the scope of agent applications. However, evaluating persona agent performance is incredibly challenging due to the complexity of assessing persona adherence in free-form interactions across various environments that are relevant to each persona agent. We introduce PersonaGym, the first dynamic evaluation framework for assessing persona agents, and PersonaScore, the first automated human-aligned metric grounded in decision theory for comprehensive large-scale evaluation of persona agents. Our evaluation of 6 open and closed-source LLMs, using a benchmark encompassing 200 personas and 10,000 questions, reveals significant opportunities for advancement in persona agent capabilities across state-of-the-art models. For example, Claude 3.5 Sonnet only has a 2.97% relative improvement in PersonaScore than GPT 3.5 despite being a much more advanced model. Importantly, we find that increased model size and complexity do not necessarily imply enhanced persona agent capabilities thereby highlighting the pressing need for algorithmic and architectural invention towards faithful and performant persona agents., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

In this paper, we investigate the extrapolation capabilities of implicit deep learning models in handling unobserved data, where traditional deep neural networks may falter. Implicit models, distinguished by their adaptability in layer depth and incorporation of feedback within their computational graph, are put to the test across various extrapolation scenarios: out-of-distribution, geographical, and temporal shifts. Our experiments consistently demonstrate significant performance advantage with implicit models. We release Rasa, the first multilingual expressive TTS dataset for any Indian language, which contains 10 hours of neutral speech and 1-3 hours of expressive speech for each of the 6 Ekman emotions covering 3 languages: Assamese, Bengali, & Tamil. Our ablation studies reveal that just 1 hour of neutral and 30 minutes of expressive data can yield a Fair system as indicated by MUSHRA scores. Increasing neutral data to 10 hours, with minimal expressive data, significantly enhances expressiveness. This offers a practical recipe for resource-constrained languages, prioritizing easily obtainable neutral data alongside smaller amounts of expressive data. We show the importance of syllabically balanced data and pooling emotions to enhance expressiveness. Publicly available TTS datasets for low-resource languages like Hindi and Tamil typically contain 10-20 hours of data, leading to poor vocabulary coverage. This limitation becomes evident in downstream applications where domain-specific vocabulary coupled with frequent code-mixing with English, results in many OOV words. To highlight this problem, we create a benchmark containing OOV words from several real-world applications. Indeed, state-of-the-art Hindi and Tamil TTS systems perform poorly on this OOV benchmark, as indicated by intelligibility tests. To improve the model's OOV performance, we propose a low-effort and economically viable strategy to obtain more training data. Specifically, we propose using volunteers as opposed to high quality voice artists to record words containing character bigrams unseen in the training data. Frequency desynchronized attractors cannot appear in identically coupled symmetric phase oscillators because "overtaking" of phases cannot occur. This restriction no longer applies for more general identically coupled oscillators. Hence, it is interesting to understand precisely how frequency synchrony is lost and how invariant sets such as attracting weak chimeras are generated at torus breakup, where the phase description breaks down. Maistrenko et al (2016) found numerical evidence of an organizing center for weak chimeras in a system of $N=3$ coupled identical Kuramoto oscillators with inertia. This paper identifies this organizing center and shows that it corresponds to a particular type of non-transverse heteroclinic bifurcation that is generic in the context of symmetry. At this codimension two bifurcation there is a splitting of connecting orbits between the in-phase (fully synchronized) state. This generates a wide variety of associated bifurcations to weak chimeras. We further highlight a second organizing center associated with a codimension two symmetry-breaking heteroclinic connection.

While contemporary reinforcement learning research and applications have embraced policy gradient methods as the panacea of solving learning problems, value-based methods can still be useful in many domains as long as we can wrangle with how to exploit them in a sample efficient way. In this paper, we explore the chaotic nature of DQNs in reinforcement learning, while understanding how the information that they retain when trained can be repurposed for adapting a model to different tasks. We start by designing a simple experiment in which we are able to observe the Q-values for each state and action in an environment. Then we train in eight different ways to explore how these training algorithms affect the way that accurate Q-values are learned (or not learned). We tested the adaptability of each trained model when retrained to accomplish a slightly modified task. We then scaled our setup to test the larger problem of an autonomous vehicle at an unprotected intersection. We observed that the model is able to adapt to new tasks quicker when the base model's Q-value estimates are closer to the true Q-values. The results provide some insights and guidelines into what algorithms are useful for sample efficient task adaptation.

Enterprise chatbots, powered by generative AI, are emerging as key applications to enhance employee productivity. Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), Large Language Models (LLMs), and orchestration frameworks like Langchain and Llamaindex are crucial for building these chatbots. However, creating effective enterprise chatbots is challenging and requires meticulous RAG pipeline engineering. This includes fine-tuning embeddings and LLMs, extracting documents from vector databases, rephrasing queries, reranking results, designing prompts, honoring document access controls, providing concise responses, including references, safeguarding personal information, and building orchestration agents. We present a framework for building RAG-based chatbots based on our experience with three NVIDIA chatbots: for IT/HR benefits, financial earnings, and general content. Our contributions are three-fold: introducing the FACTS framework (Freshness, Architectures, Cost, Testing, Security), presenting fifteen RAG pipeline control points, and providing empirical results on accuracy-latency tradeoffs between large and small LLMs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper of its kind that provides a holistic view of the factors as well as solutions for building secure enterprise-grade chatbots.", Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, Preprint submission to ACM CIKM 2024

Emulating the mapping between quantities of interest and their control parameters using surrogate models finds widespread application in engineering design, including in numerical optimization and uncertainty quantification. Gaussian process models can serve as a probabilistic surrogate model of unknown functions, thereby making them highly suitable for engineering design and decision-making in the presence of uncertainty. In this work, we are interested in emulating quantities of interest observed from models of a system at multiple fidelities, which trade accuracy for computational efficiency. Using multifidelity Gaussian process models, to efficiently fuse models at multiple fidelities, we propose a novel method to actively learn the surrogate model via leave-one-out cross-validation (LOO-CV). Our proposed multifidelity cross-validation (\texttt{MFCV}) approach develops an adaptive approach to reduce the LOO-CV error at the target (highest) fidelity, by learning the correlations between the LOO-CV at all fidelities. \texttt{MFCV} develops a two-step lookahead policy to select optimal input-fidelity pairs, both in sequence and in batches, both for continuous and discrete fidelity spaces. MRI is a widely used ionization-free soft-tissue imaging modality, often employed repeatedly over a patient's lifetime. However, prolonged scanning durations, among other issues, can limit availability and accessibility. In this work, we aim to substantially reduce scan times by leveraging prior scans of the same patient. These prior scans typically contain considerable shared information with the current scan, thereby enabling higher acceleration rates when appropriately utilized. We propose a prior informed reconstruction method with a trained diffusion model in conjunction with data-consistency steps. Our method can be trained with unlabeled image data, eliminating the need for a dataset of either k-space measurements or paired longitudinal scans as is required of other learning-based methods. We demonstrate superiority of our method over previously suggested approaches in effectively utilizing prior information without over-biasing prior consistency, which we validate on both an open-source dataset of healthy patients as well as several longitudinal cases of clinical interest.

Density functional theory (DFT) has been a cornerstone in computational chemistry, physics, and materials science for decades, benefiting from advancements in computational power and theoretical methods. This paper introduces a novel, cloud-native application, Accelerated DFT, which offers an order of magnitude acceleration in DFT simulations. By integrating state-of-the-art cloud infrastructure and redesigning algorithms for graphic processing units (GPUs), Accelerated DFT achieves high-speed calculations without sacrificing accuracy. It provides an accessible and scalable solution for the increasing demands of DFT calculations in scientific communities. The implementation details, examples, and benchmark results illustrate how Accelerated DFT can significantly expedite scientific discovery across various domains.

This study presents a novel framework for 3D gaze tracking tailored for mixed-reality settings, aimed at enhancing joint attention and collaborative efforts in team-based scenarios. Conventional gaze tracking, often limited by monocular cameras and traditional eye-tracking apparatus, struggles with simultaneous data synchronization and analysis from multiple participants in group contexts. Our proposed framework leverages state-of-the-art computer vision and machine learning techniques to overcome these obstacles, enabling precise 3D gaze estimation without dependence on specialized hardware or complex data fusion. Utilizing facial recognition and deep learning, the framework achieves real-time, tracking of gaze patterns across several individuals, addressing common depth estimation errors, and ensuring spatial and identity consistency within the dataset. Empirical results demonstrate the accuracy and reliability of our method in group environments. Kernel orchestration is the task of mapping the computation defined in different operators of a deep neural network (DNN) to the execution of GPU kernels on modern hardware platforms. Prior approaches optimize kernel orchestration by greedily applying operator fusion, which fuses the computation of multiple operators into a single kernel, and miss a variety of optimization opportunities in kernel orchestration. This paper presents Korch, a tensor program optimizer that discovers optimal kernel orchestration strategies for tensor programs. Instead of directly fusing operators, Korch first applies operator fission to decompose tensor operators into a small set of basic tensor algebra primitives. This decomposition enables a diversity of fine-grained, inter-operator optimizations. Next, Korch optimizes kernel orchestration by formalizing it as a constrained optimization problem, leveraging an off-the-shelf binary linear programming solver to discover an optimal orchestration strategy, and generating an executable that can be directly deployed on modern GPU platforms. Evaluation on a variety of DNNs shows that Korch outperforms existing tensor program optimizers by up to 1.7x on V100 GPUs and up to 1.6x on A100 GPUs.
