9. Strong soil–vegetation relationship in riparian forests of the middle Rio Doce watershed, south-eastern Brazil.

Abstract

Phytosociological surveys and soil quality studies are relevant tools for the implementation of restoration programmes. This study aimed to characterise the vegetation of the tree and sapling strata in preserved riparian forests of the middle portion of the Rio Doce watershed in the Atlantic Rain Forest, Brazil. In addition, we tested the association between edaphic factors and the vegetation community. We sampled three sites of the middle sector of the Rio Doce watershed in Itueta (two sites) and Santa Rita do Itueto (one site) municipalities in Minas Gerais, south-eastern Brazil. At each sampling site, we inventoried 15 plots of 100 m2 (10 × 10 m) for the tree stratum. Within each plot of the tree stratum we delimited a 25 m2 (5 × 5 m) plot, totalling 4 500 m2 and 1 125 m2 respectively for the tree and sapling strata. We employed co-inertia analysis to test the relationship between soil factors and the plant community and to highlight the taxon– environment relationship. We recorded 157 species belonging to 31 families, with 105 species from 24 families in the tree stratum, and 85 species from 22 families in the sapling stratum. Edaphic factors were highly heterogeneous among plots, although most of the plots presented soils with neutral pH and high fertility (base saturation > 50%). Co-inertia analyses showed highly significant associations between edaphic factors and the plant community, both for the tree (RV = 0.486, p < 0.001) and the sapling strata (RV = 0.692, p < 0.001). We highlighted the existence of a clear edaphic– floristic gradient, with a significant association of certain species with contrasting soil conditions. Knowledge about the association between environmental characteristics and floristic composition can assist in the selection of species with greater chances to establish in specific environmental conditions. Abstract

This study reports valuable information regarding the presence and concentration of a series of photoactive β‐carboline (βCs) alkaloids (norharmane, harmane, harmine, harmol, harmaline, and harmalol) and their distribution across the floral age and organs of Passiflora caerulea. UHPLC–MS/MS data reported herein reveal that the βCs' content ranged from 1 to 110 μg kg−1, depending on the floral organ and age. In certain physiologically relevant organs, such as anthers, βCs' content was one order of magnitude higher than in other organs, suggesting a special role for βCs in this specific organ. βCs' content also varied in a structure‐dependent manner. Alkaloids bearing a hydroxyl group at position C(7) of the main βC ring were present at concentrations one order of magnitude higher than other βC derivatives investigated. UV–visible and fluorescence spectroscopy of the flower extracts provided complementary information regarding other biologically relevant groups of chromophores (phenolic/indolic derivatives, flavonoids/carotenes, and chlorophylls). Since flowers are constantly exposed to solar radiation, the presence of photoactive βCs in floral organs may have several (photo)biological implications that are further discussed. Modern agriculture is becoming increasingly pollinator-dependent. However, the global stock of domesticated honeybees is growing at a slower rate than its demand, while wild bees are declining worldwide. This uneven scenario of high pollinator demand and low pollinator availability can translate into increasing pollination limitation, reducing the yield of pollinator-dependent crops. However, overall assessments of crop pollination limitation and the factors determining its magnitude are missing. Based on 52 published studies including 30 crops, we conducted a meta-analysis comparing crop yield in pollen-supplemented versus open-pollinated flowers. We assessed the overall magnitude of pollination limitation and whether this magnitude was influenced by (i) the presence/absence of managed honeybees, (ii) crop compatibility system (i.e. self-compatible/self-incompatible) and (iii) the interaction between these two factors. Overall, pollen supplementation increased yield by approximately 34%, indicating sizable pollination limitation. Deployment of managed honeybees and self-compatibility were associated with lower pollination limitation. Particularly, active honeybee management decreased pollination limitation among self-compatible but apparently not among self-incompatible crops. Abstract

Our motivation for writing this editorial is to alert the academic community about the risks of predatory publishing in Biology. By piggy-backing on the open access (OA) movement and taking advantage of the “publish or perish” culture in a system that prioritises quantity over quality, predatory publishing has grown exponentially in recent years and spread across all areas of knowledge. Thousands of predatory journals and books have emerged and (provided a fee is paid) they publish scientific papers and chapters without submitting them to rigorous peer review. Now there are even predatory meetings, which promise to accept talks and publish complete works for a fee, also without reviewing them properly. These profit-making machines can damage both academia and society, putting at risk the quality of science and public trust in it, the well-being of the population, the conservation of biodiversity and the mitigation of climate change. We show the modus operandi behind invitations to contribute to predatory journals, books and meetings and suggest ways to separate the wheat from the chaff. Finally, we discuss the need to create regulatory agencies that perform a careful and systematic evaluation of the activities carried out by publishers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

37. Floral biology and pollination ecology of the micro-endemic Stachytarpheta cassiae(S. Atkins) (Verbenaceae)

Abstract

Knowledge on pollination biology is crucial to understand the basic aspects of sexual plant reproduction and the long-term viability of plant populations. Nowadays, the relevance of these studies on rare and micro-endemic species is ever more important, given the increasing anthropogenic pressures. Here, we characterize the floral biology and identify the pollinators of Stachytarpheta cassiae(S. Atkins),a micro-endemic species from the rupestrian grasslands of northern Minas Gerais, Brazil. Flowering of S. cassiaeoccurs throughout the year and flower anthesis is diurnal, with most of the flowers opening in the morning. Flowers offer nectar and pollen as rewards to a wide range of flower visitors. We observed 15 bee species, five hummingbird species, three butterfly species and one wasp species. All Euglossine bee species and hummingbird species effectively contacted the fertile whorls of the flowers and were classified as pollinators. Thus, S. cassiaeappears to have a generalist pollination system. We also identified primary (Bumblebees and carpenter bees) and secondary (non-Euglossine bees and a wasp) nectar robbers and nectar thieves (butterflies). Overall, Euglossine bee and hummingbird pollinators showed significantly higher relative visitation frequency as compared to the rest of floral visitors (nectar robbers and thieves). Flowers of Stachytarpheta cassiaerepresent a key resource for many animal species throughout the year in these harsh rupestrian environments. Future studies should assess the nectar secretion patterns and the relative contribution of floral visitors to the reproductive success of the species.

El conocimiento de la composición química del aceite esencial producido por distintos órganos en las plantas, brinda información para conocer las funciones de dichos compuestos. Los aceites esenciales son metabolitos secundarios producidos y almacenados en diferentes estructuras glandulares en hojas, flores y tallos. La composición química del aceite esencial difiere entre órgano de la planta y entre estructuras de secreción, incluso ubicadas en un mismo órgano. Tales diferencias podrían ser consecuencia del distinto tipo y densidad de estructuras glandulares en cada órgano. El aceite esencial del género Lepechinia ha sido escasamente estudiado, sin embargo su uso etnobotánico pone en evidencia propiedades medicinales y antisépticas. Hasta la fecha varios estudios han evaluado la composición química del aceite esencial en distintas partes de las plantas o de la misma estructura glandular en diferentes posiciones dentro de las mismas. Sin embargo, no se han encontrado estudios que evalúen la composición química del aceite esencial del mismo tipo de estructura glandular en hojas y verticilos florales fértiles. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar la composición química del aceite esencial proveniente de tricomas glandulares peltados de anteras y hojas de Lepechinia floribunda (Lamiaceae). Se encontró menor riqueza de compuestos químicos y un incremento en la abundancia relativa de monoterpenos hidrogenados en el aceite esencial de anteras que en hojas, mientras que en hojas hubo mayor abundancia de sesquiterpenos oxigenados. Estos cambios en la composición química probablemente respondan a la alta especificidad tisular en la expresión de genes que existe para cada órgano. Many studies have shown that the chemical composition of the essential oil can differ depending on the plant organ and the secretory structures even if they are at the same organ. Such differences may be the consequence that organs also differ in type and density of glandular structure. Moreover, the same type of glandular structure can change its chemical composition depending on its position within the same organ. However, no study has been evaluating the chemical composition of the essential oil from the same glandular structure in leaves and fertile floral whorls. The aim of this work was to characterize the chemical composition of essential oils of peltate glandular trichomes from anthers and leaves of Lepechinia floribunda. Hasta la fecha varios estudios han evaluado la composición química del aceite esencial en distintas partes de las plantas o de la misma estructura glandular en diferentes posiciones dentro de las mismas. Sin embargo, no se han encontrado estudios que evalúen la composición química del aceite esencial del mismo tipo de estructura glandular en hojas y verticilos florales fértiles. El objetivo de este trabajo fue caracterizar la composición química del aceite esencial proveniente de tricomas glandulares peltados de anteras y hojas de Lepechinia floribunda (Lamiaceae). Se encontró menor riqueza de compuestos químicos y un incremento en la abundancia relativa de monoterpenos hidrogenados en el aceite esencial de anteras que en hojas, mientras que en hojas hubo mayor abundancia de sesquiterpenos oxigenados. Estos cambios en la composición química probablemente respondan a la alta especificidad tisular en la expresión de genes que existe para cada órgano.

Abstract

Background Despite Stebbins' principle of the most efficient pollinator being proposed decades ago, the most important pollinators are still mainly identified using the frequency of visits to flowers. This shortcoming results in a gap between the characterization of the flower visitors of a plant species and a reliable estimation of the plant fitness consequences of the mutualistic interaction. The performance of a mutualistic visitor depends on its abundance, behaviour, effectiveness (pollen removal and deposition per unit time) and efficiency (seed set per unit time) conditioned by the temporal matching between pollinator activity and temporal patterns of maturation of the sexual functions of flowers. Although there have been recent attempts to provide a conceptual and methodological framework to characterize pollinators' performance, few have combined all key elements of visitors and plants to provide an accurate estimation of pollinators' performance under natural conditions. Methods We complement information on the flower biology and mating system of the sub-shrub Lepechinia floribunda (Lamiaceae) to provide a daily quantitative estimation of performance (effectiveness and efficiency) of the more abundant pollinators, i.e. native bumble-bees (Bombus spp.) and leafcutter bees (Megachile sp.), and the exotic honey-bee (Apis mellifera). Key Results Unlike honey-bees or leafcutter bees, native bumble-bees matched the daily pattern of nectar production and stigma receptivity, and showed higher effectiveness and efficiency. Despite the overabundance of honey-bees, visits occurred mainly when stigmas were not receptive, thus reducing the honey-bees' overall performance. Conclusions Bumble-bees appear to be the most important pollinators and potential historical mediators of reproductive trait evolution in L. floribunda. Because the production of seeds by bumble-bees involved fewer pollen grains for plants and less investment in floral display than honey-bees, contemporary and expected changes in pollinator abundance may affect future L. floribunda floral evolution. If bumble-bees were to be further displaced by anthropogenic disturbance or by competition with honey-bees, their lower efficiency will select for a larger floral display increasing reproductive costs.
