13. The Idea of Asia in British Geographical Thought, 1652–1832.

- Abstract
This article explores popular British ideas about Asia from the mid-seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century, using largely neglected sources: geography books. Thanks to their popularity and focus on conventional knowledge, this genre of texts – geographical reference works, gazetteers, encyclopaedias and schoolbooks – allows us to glimpse the commonplace mentalities of the period, and consequently to understand how Asia was perceived by ordinary literate Britons and not just by prominent intellectuals. Geography books typically regard Asia as a 'place of origin' for the cultural and societal achievements of Europe. They also assume that Asia possesses plentiful natural resources and is thus ripe for economic exploitation. At the same time, however, Asia is understood to be degenerate and corrupt, usually due to a combination of climactic decay, religious failings and government mismanagement. Asia is thus alien and entirely distinct from Europe, and, simultaneously, it is intimately connected to Europe's rise and future imperial progress. British geography books can tell us a great deal about how ordinary literate people understood Asian peoples and places in the formative age of British empire-building. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Indo-Pacific concept is imprecise and designates more a geopolitical reality than a geographical space, but it is not, as is often suggested, a recent creation of the US, nor of the Trump administration. On the contrary, several actors have used it before the United States itself. And the US will not be the last actor to adopt it, either. On the contrary, it has gradually been adopted by other actors, including ASEAN, which tries to turn the concept in its favour in a way that reaffirms the importance of the group in the region as a whole and does not put in question neither “its centrality or its unity”, something that is far from being achieved.

Background: The prevalence of aluminium phosphide (AlP) poisoning is on the rise in Asian countries. The objectives of our study were to determine the distribution of AIP poisoning by sex, age groups district and its presentation by blood pressure category and oxygen saturation category and its mortality in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. Materials Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Emergency Department of Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar, Pakistan from June 1, 2020 to September 30, 2020. Fifty eight cases of AIP registered during 2019 were included. The diagnosis was made by history and clinical suspicion. All these cases were managed by standard management protocols. Sex, age groups, district, blood pressure category, oxygen saturation category and presence of mortality were variables; all being categorical were analyzed by count and percentage with 80% confidence interval. Results: Out of 58 AlP poisoning cases, women 34 (58.62%) were more than men 24 (41.38%), with most cases 30 (51.73%) in 10-19 years age group. Most cases 17 (29.31%) were from district Swabi, followed by district Peshawar 16 (27.58%). Most cases presented in non-recordable blood pressure category 19 (32.76%). Most cases 22 (37.93%) presented in oxygen saturation category of ≥ 90%. Out of 58 cases, mortality was 72.41% (42/58), involving more women 24/58 (41.38%) than men 18/58 (31.03%), with most cases 23 (39.66%) in 10-19 years age group. Mortality was highest in non-recordable blood pressure category 19 (32.76%). Mortality was highest 19 (32.76%) in oxygen saturation category of below 90%. Conclusion: Aluminium phosphide (AlP) poisoning is an uncommon, but a dreadful public health problem in population of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. It involves women more than men, with most cases in adolescent age group, and in non-recordable blood pressure category. AlP poisoning mortality is very high 72.41% in our population, involving more women than men, with most cases in adolescent age group. Mortality is highest in non-recordable blood pressure category and in oxygen saturation category of below 90%.

Background: Liver transplantation is one of the most effective treatments for acute liver failure, chronic liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. This study was implemented to evaluate the survival rate of liver transplant in Asia. Methods: Studies that investigated the survival rate of liver transplant were selected using a systematic search strategy in the following databases: Medline, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, ISI Web of Science, and Cochrane to November 30th, 2020. The extracted data were entered into the Excel software. Then, stata 16.0 was used for analysis. The search identified 3046 articles of which, 713 were duplicates and 2156 deemed as irrelevant after reading titles and abstracts. Also, 51 articles were excluded as they were not original (i.e. letter, commentary, review) or did not meet the inclusion criteria. As such, 117 studies, involving 406,646 participants, were included in this meta-analysis. Results: In this study one, 2, 3, 5, and 10-year survival rates of liver transplant were estimated to be 85%, 80%, 75%, 73%, and 71%, respectively. Conclusion: This study suggests that the survival rate of liver transplant in Asia is comparable with the corresponding rate reported in the United States and Europe. This study provides a better and more clear view of the efficiency of medical cares, regarding liver transplantation.

Background: The value of medical registries strongly depends on the quality of the data collected. This must be objectively measured before large clinical databases can be promoted for observational research, quality improvement, and clinical trials. We aimed to evaluate the quality of a multinational intensive care unit (ICU) network of registries of critically ill patients established in seven Asian low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Methods: The Critical Care Asia federated registry platform enables ICUs to collect clinical, outcome and process data for aggregate and unit-level analysis. The evaluation used the standardised criteria of the Directory of Clinical Databases (DoCDat) and a framework for data quality assurance in medical registries. Six reviewers assessed structure, coverage, reliability and validity of the ICU registry data. Case mix and process measures on patient episodes from June to December 2020 were analysed. Results: Data on 20,507 consecutive patient episodes from 97 ICUs in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan and Vietnam were included. The quality level achieved according to the ten prespecified DoCDat criteria was high (average score 3.4 out of 4) as was the structural and organizational performance -- comparable to ICU registries in high-income countries. Identified strengths were types of variables included, reliability of coding, data completeness and validation. Potential improvements included extension of national coverage, optimization of recruitment completeness validation in all centers and the use of interobserver reliability checks. Conclusions: The Critical Care Asia platform evaluates well using standardised frameworks for data quality and equally to registries in resource-rich settings.

Macrophagic myofasciitis (MMF) is a rare immune-mediated myopathy that seems to be triggered by aluminium hydroxide adjuvant used in vaccines. Its presentation is relatively heterogeneous and treatment with steroids leads to improvement, although there is little evidence regarding the role of other immunosuppressants. The histological findings in MMF seem to be the result of an abnormal presence in the inoculation site of aluminium, which can induce an immune-mediated muscular disease in susceptible persons. The authors describe the case of a patient with an atypical presentation of macrophagic myofasciitis, with histological confirmation in a muscle biopsy distant from the inoculation site, and a good therapeutic response to tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil, as well as a discussion on the pathologic basis, controversies and emerging treatments for this condition.

To date, a lot of data on molecular genetic characteristics of different tick-borne encephalitis virus strains has appeared. Only on the basis of the E protein genome, sequences of about 1,500 TBEV strains were registered in GenBank. The purpose of the work – revision and comparative analysis of data on complete genomes sequences of the Far Eastern subtype of TBE virus strains distributed in the Asian part of Eurasian continent. Material and methods. The data on the complete genomes of 84 strains of TBEV isolated in Asia were used; phylogenetic analysis was performed. Results and discussion: it was shown that variants of the TBEV of the Far Eastern subtype are circulating here and form three separate clusters (Sofjin, Senzhang- и Shkotovo-like strains). Sofjin strain (Sofjin-1953, Sofjin-Chumakov, Sofjin-KSY) was considered to be the reference for Far Eastern TBE virus subtype strains and a cluster of Sofjin-like strains. Sofjin-like strains were not found in China and Japan, but widely distributed throughout the area of Primorsky and Khabarovsk krai. The group of Senzhang-like strains was distributed in China, Eastern Siberia, Khabarovsk krai and northern Primorsky krai, but was not found in Japan (Hokkaido). According to molecular genetic characteristics the youngest and more genetically homogeneous group was the Shkotovo-like strains, isolated in the southern part of Primorsky krai, however not found on Hokkaido Island (Japan). Conclusion: revision of the complete genome characteristics of TBEV strains revealed the features of micro-evolutionary process of viral populations in the Asian part of Eurasia, show the individual affection of strains to certain territories, as well as detect random finds of such strains in the territories of other natural foci.

21. Archaeology in the Borderlands: Investigations in Caucasia and Beyond
- Subjects
Archaeology ,Anthropology ,Smith ,Rubinson ,Borderlands ,Caucasia ,Asia. - Abstract
Set on a broad isthmus between the Black and Caspian Seas, Caucasia has traditionally been portrayed as either a well-trod highway linking southwest Asia and the Eurasian Steppe or an isolated periphery of the political and cultural centers of the ancient world. Archaeology in the Borderlands: Investigations in Caucasia and Beyond critically re-examines traditional archaeological work in the region, assembling accounts of recent investigations by an international group of scholars from the Caucasus, its neighbors, Europe, and the United States. The twelve chapters in this book address the ways archaeologists must re-conceptualize the region within our larger historical and anthropological frameworks of thought, presenting critical new materials from the Neolithic period through the Iron Age. Challenging traditional models of economic, political, cultural, and social marginality that read the past through Cold War geographies, Archaeology in the Borderlands provides a new challenge to long dominant interpretations of the pre-, proto-, and early history of Eurasia, opening new possibilities for understanding a region that is critical to regional order in the post-Soviet era. This collection represents the first attempt to grapple with the problems and possibilities for archaeology in the Caucasus and its neighboring regions sparked by the collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of independent states.

- Abstract
Background The spread of HIV infection among men in Indonesia continues to increase every year. Clients of female sex workers (FSWs) are a group at higher risk of acquiring HIV infection due to their frequent engagement in sexual acts with sex workers. This study aimed to identify factors of susceptibility to HIV infection among clients of FSWs.
Methods: A qualitative inquiry using one-on-one in-depth interviews was conducted in the Belu and Malaka districts of Indonesia from January to April 2017. The study participants (n =42) were the clients of FSWs recruited using the snowball sampling technique. The inclusion criteria were: being a client of FSWs and being aged 18 years or more. Data were analysed using a framework analysis. Results: Findings were grouped into two main emerging themes that included behavioural and socioeconomic factors. Behavioural factors that mediated HIV susceptibility among clients of FSWs were: frequent engagement in unsafe sex with multiple sex workers; low perceptions of the relevance of available HIV and AIDS services and limited access to these services; and HIV stigma or fear of being labelled as HIV positive. Socioeconomic factors included: participants' economic situation; and individuals' household responsibility and ability to afford FSWs services. Conclusions: The study results indicate the need to reformulate and improve HIV and AIDS-related services, including increasing the level of availability of HIV service points and the dissemination of knowledge and information about HIV and AIDS and condom use and making them accessible to both FSWs and their clients in Belu and Malaka districts.

We interpreted the TRIDENT satellite derived gravity field to provide detailed insights into the spatial distribution of the crustal density structures in the area of the Yellow Sea.We used 3-D forward density modelling for the interpretation that incorporated constraints from existing geological and geophysical information. A gravity stripping method is used to separate out the gravity effects of different geological crustal structures. From this analysis we see that (1) the Gunsan sedimentary basin is isostatically compensated. (2) The satellite-derived Bouguer anomalies ranging from 15 to -30 × 10-5 m s-2 are linked to basin thicknesses in the Yellow Sea. (3) The calculated Moho depth in the Yellow Sea varies from 27 km beneath the deep sedimentary basin to 34 km in the uplifted zones. (4) Moho depth calculations show two distinct areas, characterized by the deepest Moho depths and the largest crustal thicknesses in the Yellow Sea. The one region extends along the Qianliyan Uplift Zone from Jiaodong to Hongsung while the other area extends from southeastern China to Hongsung in the Korean peninsula. Compared to previous works we suggest that they are the part of the collisions zone between North and South China Blocks extending from China to the Korean peninsula via the Yellow Sea.

- Abstract
The present study examines the long-run and short-run impacts of fossil fuels consumption, foreign direct investment and economic growth on carbon emissions in fifteen developing Asian countries. Our empirical evidence analyses panel data for the period from 1990 to 2013, and it applies an Autoregressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) model. Our results show that in these developing economies, the efforts to foster economic growth are contributing to the generation of CO2 emissions, and that fossil fuels consumption is contributing to carbon emissions and to the deterioration of the environment at the regional level. Moreover, the empirical results spotlight that foreign direct investment is a source of environmental degradation that increases carbon emissions at the domestic level, confirming the Pollution Haven hypothesis. Furthermore, our data confirms the existence of an Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in these developing Asian countries. Finally, our study suggests that reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and fostering an environmentally friendly economic growth strategy in these developing countries will prove helpful for the well-being of this part of the developing world. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd, Depto. de Economía Aplicada, Estructura e Historia, Fac. de Ciencias Económicas y Empresariales, TRUE, pub

There has been pressure from various business and professional accounting bodies to place greater emphasis on ethics education. This has been reflected in academic research and curriculum development. The purpose of this paper is to expand the debate on accounting ethics education to take into account the globalization of business, accounting and educational services and to draw attention to the importance of cross-cultural factors. To illustrate this the paper discusses the impact that Confucius has had on the ethical thinking of East and South East Asia. Where appropriate, comparisons are made with Western attitudes and secular philosophies. This focus has been chosen because of the current and future importance of the Asian area to global commerce, and the fact that an understanding of its ethical thinking and behaviour is not possible without an appreciation of Confucian thought. - Abstract

- Abstract
The evolving discussion of Strategic Landpower has tended to build on lessons learned through more than a decade of prolonged stability operations, which crowds out analysis of other common uses of landpower, particularly coercion. Coercive strategies will play an increasingly important role in securing national interests as the U.S. rebalances to the Asia-Pacific, where landpower proved vital to successful U.S. coercion during the Cold War and continues to serve as a deterrent there. Airpower and seapower may have more strategic agility than landpower, but coercion theory would suggest their agility makes them a weaker signal, both to adversaries and allies, of commitment and a willingness to escalate or de-escalate as necessary. As U.S. land forces remain stationed in and operating throughout the Asia-Pacific region, strategists and planners should do more than rhetorically state the deterrent value of force posture, presence, and security cooperation activities, and examine the most effective ways to leverage landpower for both compellence and deterrence.

- Abstract
As Americans, we tend to view situations through our own cultural lens with, sometimes, insufficient consideration of the perspectives or interests of others. Although many countries, to include the United States, are facing similar security dynamics in the 21st Century, each represents a range of historical narratives, experiences, backgrounds, and traditions that have direct impact on their policy and decision-making. In the Asia-Pacific region, each country is pursuing their own path to security balancing U.S. security cooperation with trade and investment links to China. To enhance success, U.S. Army Pacific Pathways design should incorporate, fuse, and balance host nation security cooperation priorities and evolving military roles and missions with U.S. strategic and military objectives in the region. This will help ensure that Pacific Pathways garners host nation domestic support and funding, compliments ongoing diplomatic and economic efforts of the United States, and avoids causing any unintentional negative influences on the strategic objectives of all participants.

- Abstract
China's expanding influence into the LAC region along with growing Asia-Pacific and LAC relationships present challenges to the U.S. The complexity of the relationships between LAC and Asia-Pacific governments, to include China, suggest the U.S. rebalancing to Asia strategy is inadequate to address the cross-regional impacts. This paper explains political, economic, and military impacts and proposes a broader Pacific solution that links LAC into the U.S.' Asia rebalancing strategy. The political relationships between LAC and Chinese governments can undermine U.S. values of democracy, human rights, rule of law, and international norms. China's soft power through economic statecraft increases their influence by providing trade and investment alternatives other than U.S. options. Increased cross-regional trade flows are also creating integrated supply chains. Last, Chinese arms sales, training exercises, and military education exchanges provide revenue and support their military modernization in Asia. These factors create one integrated problem, not two separate ones. Without a broader Pacific strategic option, the U.S. regional approach to the Asia-Pacific will result in reduced access to markets and future strategic risk to U.S. influence in both regions.

- Abstract
In response to the territorial disputes in the East China and South China Seas and the ongoing build-up of military power in the Asia-Pacific region, many of the United States' allies and partners in the region, including Australia and Japan, have demonstrated renewed interest in the development of amphibious forces. China, a potential adversary, is also continuing to expand its capabilities. This paper argues the development of allied amphibious forces provides a wide range of diplomatic, military, budgetary, and economic benefits to the U.S. policy for rebalance in the Pacific. Specifically, it augments U.S. amphibious capability, promotes stability, improves multi-lateral relations, and directly and indirectly contributes to the U.S. economy. As a method of analysis, this paper evaluates the development and potential employment of Japanese and Australian amphibious forces as examples of states that seek the capability, though for different purposes.

- Abstract
Can the U.S. seize strategic opportunities and achieve its "Rebalance to Asia?" A more tailored implementation of U.S. national security policy and strategy is required if the U.S. is to achieve the desired ends. Building capacity among consequential nations strengthens internal security postures and supports regional stability. The unwise allocation of Security Assistance funds consumes precious resources that could otherwise address other pressing issues. A Pivotal States policy will better discriminate among competing national security objectives. Identifying Pivotal States will allow the U.S. to prioritize security assistance recipients and fund only those nations or programs that represent strategic necessities. Using a principled approach within the framework of the Pivotal States policy and establishing clear criteria for the identification of Pivotal States will facilitate a more successful Security Assistance strategy. Creating an NSC-led Interagency Policy Committee to oversee Foreign/Security Assistance planning and execution is necessary. Overcoming bureaucratic friction and developing common competencies among Foreign Assistance professionals from all agencies is critical.

- Abstract
Current literature on job satisfaction and dissatisfaction does not comprehensively explain the possible relationship among the many factors in Herzberg et al.'s (1959) two-factor theory and teacher retention in international schools in Asia. While research exploring different individual factors to retention and job satisfaction exists, quantitative studies do not appear in great abundance, especially literature with international schools as the target. Given access to quantitative data, international school administrators may plan strategically and implement initiatives to retain and empower effective teachers, both Gen Y and non-Gen Y. The purpose of this correlational study is to examine the relationship between factors of job satisfaction and dissatisfaction in the contract renewal of Gen Y and non-Gen Y teachers working at international schools in Asia. This quantitative, non-experimental study will use a correlational research design, and survey data will be collected from international schools in Asia. A convenience sample consisting of 116 teachers from international schools in Asia was used in the study. Binary logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the data. Based on study results, there exist statistically significant and meaningful connections between factors of job satisfaction and contract renewal for Gen Y and non-Gen Y teachers. The factor communication is a statistically significant predictor of contract renewal for Gen Y teachers. The factors nature of work and supervision are statistically significant predictors of contract renewal for non-Gen Y teachers.

- Abstract
As the U.S. rebalances to the Asia-Pacific, the South China Sea (SCS) will become increasingly important to U.S. national interests. How the U.S. employs its vast national power in the SCS will have longstanding consequences for the U.S. and the rest of the world. In particular, employment of U.S. military power in the region serves numerous necessary functions. It ensures freedom of navigation, reinforces U.S. treaty commitments, demonstrates U.S. resolve, and builds familiarity with China in order to prevent miscalculation and improve safety at sea. This employment of U.S. military power carries with it significant risks as well as opportunities. While military power is an important component of U.S. strategy in the SCS, it should not be the U.S.'s primary mechanism for advancing U.S. policy at the expense of other available instruments. It is crucial for U.S. military influence to be employed in synchronization with other elements of power in order to best achieve U.S. strategic objectives.

- Abstract
The European imperialism after WWI embodied in the Sykes-Picot agreement and exacerbated by the French mandate rule reinforced and made worse the geographical, social, religious and societal divisions within Syria and the Levant. In addition to laying the foundations for political and sectarian conflict seen today in the Levant, Sykes-Picot and the French mandate policies paved the way for the rise of the Baathist party and the Assad Regime. This paper starts with a look at the historical divisions in the Levant that existed during the Ottoman Empire, then focuses on the period of the Sykes-Picot negotiations and the French Mandate period. The author argues that the divisions imposed by the French during this period had profound and lasting effects on the region leading up to the 2011 uprisings against the Assad regime. In conclusion, this paper considers some forward-thinking conflict resolution ideas involving a remapping of the Middle East. This author does not agree that a 'partition solution' can be foist upon the region to solve the seemingly intractable regional sectarian problems orbiting around the Syrian civil war, but that eventual solution may be the only way to bring a modicum of lasting peace to the region.

- Abstract
The Asia-Pacific region is the most dynamic and challenging in the world because of its unique blend of economic opportunities, diverse political systems, and broad security challenges. This region includes a set of responsibilities, threats and opportunities for the U.S. unlike any other. This paper describes the U.S. strategy for the Asia Pacific region and how the nation communicates this strategy. It concludes by analyzing how the regional actors are receiving the strategy and suggests possible lessons for the strategic planner. Direct communication activities appear to be resourced adequately; however, financial assistance and support programs still appear to reflect pre-rebalance priorities. Regional reactions to the rebalance suggest a number of points: first, the U.S. must avoid activities that force partners to choose between the U.S. and China; second, the U.S. is no longer the most important economy in the region; third, nations are evaluating the rebalance within the context of the U.S. fiscal situation; finally, China's "containment narrative" is reinforced by U.S. actions to deepen relations with treaty allies.

- Abstract
This paper examines the roles and missions of the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) within the Asia-Pacific as part of the Department of Defense and U.S. government rebalance towards this important region. It briefly describes the growing importance of the region, the complex and dynamic geo-political environment and postulates a number of illustrated scenarios or vignettes to frame the strategic and operational context for likely USMC missions. Next, the paper assesses the capabilities and roles of the other services within existing concepts (Joint Operational Access Concept, Air-Sea Battle, and the Army's Pacific Pathways concept) and divines the niche capability or 'sweet spot' uniquely suitable for the USMC. The paper argues that the USMC should focus on the development and employment of company and battalion sized expeditionary units to meet the related likely contingencies while also focusing on developing a force generation model that assembles a Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) for larger more deliberate forced entry operations as part of a larger joint task force. It concludes with recommendations on how to better focus USMC company and battalion force development efforts on USMC 'sweet spot' capabilities.

- Abstract
The U.S. Japan alliance continues to be the cornerstone of the U.S.-led security structure in East Asia. Within the parameters of this alliance, the unresolved status of Taiwan still presents one of the most precarious security situations in the region, one that could lead to a major war with China. Within the larger scope of U.S. China Japan Taiwan relations, Japan and Taiwan's relationship would generally be considered the least prominent of all possible combinations. Despite this reality, when pulling back the veneer from this seemingly tertiary regional relationship, there is a depth of interaction that is difficult to categorize and that has the potential to greatly influence security and stability in the region. This thesis examines Japan and Taiwan's special relationship through the lens of Japan's national interests and assesses the implications for the future of the U.S.-Japan alliance.

- Abstract
The decolonization of countries in Asia and Africa is one of the momentous events in the twentieth century. But did the shift to independence indeed affect the lives of the people in such a dramatic way as the political events suggest? The authors in this volume look beyond the political interpretations of decolonization and address the issue of social and economic reorientations which were necessitated or caused by the end of colonial rule. The book covers three major issues: public security; the changes in the urban environment, and the reorientation of the economies. Most articles search for comparisons transcending the colonial and national borders and adopt a time frame extending from the late colonial period to the early decades of independence in Asia and Africa (1930s-1970s).The volume is part of the research programme 'Indonesia across Orders' of the Netherlands Institute for War Documentation.Contributors to the volume are: Greg Bankoff, Raymond Betts, Ann Booth, Cathérine Coquéry-Vidrovitch, Freek Colombijn, Frederick Cooper, Bill Freund, Karl Hack, Jim Masselos and Willem Wolters.

"The identification of the Twenty-First Century as the Pacific Century and the Rise of China signal a transformation in the international order that political leaders and strategists around the globe seek to understand. Most assessments of the strategic factors behind this transformation in Asia tend to focus on the more traditional quantifiable measures of power, such as military and economic power. The concept of soft power, as originated by Joseph Nye, posits an alternative, non-coercive form of power based on attraction rather than force or payment. This paper will review existing assessments and specific case studies of China’s soft power in Australia, South Korea, Bangladesh, and Burma in order to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese soft power and derive strategic recommendations for the U.S."--Abstract.

- Abstract
This volume examines three broad and intertwined themes of significant importance for the Asia-Pacific region. Firstly, the volume discusses the complex mosaic of current and emerging regional security issues and relates them to the activities of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and other regional organizations. The 2011 summit in Honolulu demonstrated the continuing relevance of the APEC but also revealed the organization's potential in further enhancing regional development and integration. The discussion in the volume of various regional security trends indicates several new opportunities for APEC's evolution as the organization prepares for its 2012 summit in Vladivostok. Secondly, the book contributors offer their personal perspectives on the evolving roles of influential regional actors, such as China, Japan, Russia, and the United States. Each of these important players has its own unique national perspective on the Asia- Pacific region shaped by respective historical, cultural, economic and political involvement in regional affairs. All of them, however, rely on effective multilateral institutions such as APEC. This leads to the third theme of the volume: U.S.-Russia relations in the Asia-Pacific. America's economic prosperity is unthinkable today without close partnership with the Asia-Pacific region. Russia, too, and especially its eastern regions, increasingly depends on the economic opportunities offered by the dynamic Asia-Pacific region. This commonality of America's and Russia's regional perspectives is a good basis for bilateral cooperation on regional issues. The transition from the Honolulu APEC to Vladivostok APEC offers an opportunity to explore new areas of U.S.-Russia bilateral ties across the Pacific.
