Neuroscience is a swiftly progressing discipline that aims to unravel the intricate workings of the human brain and mind. Brain tumors, ranging from non-cancerous to malignant forms, pose a significant diagnostic challenge due to the presence of more than 100 distinct types. Effective treatment hinges on the precise detection and segmentation of these tumors early. We introduce a cutting-edge deep-learning approach employing a binary convolutional neural network (BCNN) to address this. This method is employed to segment the 10 most prevalent brain tumor types and is a significant improvement over current models restricted to only segmenting four types. Our methodology begins with acquiring MRI images, followed by a detailed preprocessing stage where images undergo binary conversion using an adaptive thresholding method and morphological operations. This prepares the data for the next step, which is segmentation. The segmentation identifies the tumor type and classifies it according to its grade (Grade I to Grade IV) and differentiates it from healthy brain tissue. We also curated a unique dataset comprising 6,600 brain MRI images specifically for this study. The overall performance achieved by our proposed model is 99.36%. The effectiveness of our model is underscored by its remarkable performance metrics, achieving 99.40% accuracy, 99.32% precision, 99.45% recall, and a 99.28% F-Measure in segmentation tasks.

Cloud computing has revolutionized organizational operations by providing convenient, on-demand access to resources. The emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) has introduced a new paradigm for collaborative computing, leveraging sensors and devices that generate and process vast amounts of data, thereby resulting in challenges related to scalability and security, making the significance of conventional security methods even more pronounced. Consequently, in this paper, we propose a novel Scalable and Secure Cloud Architecture (SSCA) that integrates IoT and cryptographic techniques, aiming to develop scalable and trustworthy cloud systems, thus enabling multi-user systems and facilitating simultaneous access to cloud resources by multiple users. The design adopts a decentralized approach, utilizing multiple cloud nodes to handle user requests efficiently and incorporates Multicast and Broadcast Rekeying Algorithm (MBRA) to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of user information, utilizing a hybrid cryptosystem that combines MBRA, Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) and blockchain technology. Leveraging IoT devices, the architecture gathers data from distributed sensing resources and ensures the security of collected information through robust MBRA-PQC encryption algorithms, while the blockchain ensures that the confidential data is stored in distributed and immutable records. The proposed approach is applied to several datasets and the effectiveness is validated through various performance metrics, including response time, throughput, scalability, security, and reliability. The results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed SSCA, showcasing a notable reduction in response time by 1.67 seconds and 0.97 seconds for 250 and 1000 devices, respectively, in comparison to the MHE-IS-CPMT. Likewise, SSCA demonstrated significant improvements in the AUC values, exhibiting enhancements of 6.30%, 6.90%, 7.60%, and 7.30% at the 25-user level, and impressive gains of 5.20%, 9.30%, 11.50%, and 15.40% at the 50-user level when compared to the MHE-IS-CPMT, EAM, SCSS, and SHCEF models, respectively.

Pashto scripts are cursive in nature and hard to recognize in real-time. Native speakers of the Pashto language are large in numbers and reside in different regions of the world. Due to the cursive nature of the Pashto script along with variations in character strokes, the printed, as well as handwritten characters, are difficult to be detected, classified or recognized. In real-time handwritten character recognition systems, the challenging factors that constraints the system depends on the stroke noise, geometric behavior (like rotation, scaling and shifting, etc.) of the text. In this article, we provide an efficient technique that aimed to recognize handwritten characters in real-time by first smoothing the noise components in the text and then extract shape-based invariant features from the handwritten strokes. For real-time recognition of characters, the probability-based multi-class Naïve Bayesian classifier is exploited, which determines the probabilities of geometric invariant features to predict the character with the highest likelihood. The performance of the proposed approach has been validated through extensive experiments and based on the recognition matrices, the proposed technique achieves an accuracy of 97.5% for online Pashto handwritten characters in real-time.

MotivationMany real applications such as businesses and health generate large categorical datasets with uncertainty. A fundamental task is to efficiently discover hidden and non-trivial patterns from such large uncertain categorical datasets. Since the exact value of an attribute is often unknown in uncertain categorical datasets, conventional clustering analysis algorithms do not provide a suitable means for dealing with categorical data, uncertainty, and stability.Problem statementThe ability of decision making in the presence of vagueness and uncertainty in data can be handled using Rough Set Theory. Though, recent categorical clustering techniques based on Rough Set Theory help but they suffer from low accuracy, high computational complexity, and generalizability especially on data sets where they sometimes fail or hardly select their best clustering attribute.ObjectivesThe main objective of this research is to propose a new information theoretic based Rough Purity Approach (RPA). Another objective of this work is to handle the problems of traditional Rough Set Theory based categorical clustering techniques. Hence, the ultimate goal is to cluster uncertain categorical datasets efficiently in terms of the performance, generalizability and computational complexity.MethodsThe RPA takes into consideration information-theoretic attribute purity of the categorical-valued information systems. Several extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate the efficiency of RPA using a real Supplier Base Management (SBM) and six benchmark UCI datasets. The proposed RPA is also compared with several recent categorical data clustering techniques.ResultsThe experimental results show that RPA outperforms the baseline algorithms. The significant percentage improvement with respect to time (66.70%), iterations (83.13%), purity (10.53%), entropy (14%), and accuracy (12.15%) as well as Rough Accuracy of clusters show that RPA is suitable for practical usage.ConclusionWe conclude that as compared to other techniques, the attribute purity of categorical-valued information systems can better cluster the data. Hence, RPA technique can be recommended for large scale clustering in multiple domains and its performance can be enhanced for further research.

A smart city is a sustainable and effective metropolitan hub, that offers its residents high excellence of life through appropriate resource management. Energy management is among the most challenging problems in such metropolitan areas due to the difficulty and key role of energy systems. To optimize the benefit from the available megawatt-hours, it is important to predict the maximum electrical power output of a baseload power plant. This paper explores the method of a deep extreme learning machine to create a predictive model that can predict a combined cycle power plant's hourly full-load electrical output. An intelligent energy management solution can be achieved by properly monitoring and controlling these resources through the internet of things (IoT). The universe of artificial intelligence has produced many strides through deep learning algorithms and these methods were used for data analysis. Nonetheless, for further accuracy, deep extreme learning machine (DELM) is another candidate to be investigated for analyses of the data sequence. By using the DELM approach, a high level of reliability with a minimum error rate is achieved. The approach shows better results compared to previous investigations since previous studies could not meet the findings up to the mark and unable to predict power plant electrical energy output efficiently. During the investigation, it is shown that the proposed approach has the highest accuracy rate of 98.6% with 70% of training (33488 samples), 30% of test and validation (14352 examples). Simulation results validate the prediction effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

To recognize the basis of disease, it is essential to determine its underlying genes. Understanding the association between underlying genes and genetic disease is a fundamental problem regarding human health. Identification and association of genes with the disease require time consuming and expensive experimentations of a great number of potential candidate genes. Therefore, the alternative inexpensive and rapid computational methods have been proposed that can identify the candidate gene associated with a disease. Most of these methods use phenotypic similarities due to the fact that genes causing same or similar diseases have less variation in their sequence or network properties of protein-protein interactions based on-premises that genes lie closer in protein interaction network that causes the similar or same disease. However, these methods use only basic network properties or topological features and gene sequence information or biological features as a prior knowledge for identification of gene-disease association, which restricts the identification process to a single gene-disease association. In this study, we propose and analyze some novel computational methods for the identification of genes associated with diseases. Some advance topological and biological features that are overlooked currently are introducing for identifying candidate genes. We evaluate different computational methods on disease-gene association data from DisGeNET in a 10-fold cross-validation mode based on TP rate, FP rate, precision, recall, F-measure, and ROC curve evaluation parameters. The results reveal that various computational methods with advanced feature set outperform previous state-of-the-art techniques by achieving precision up to 93.8%, recall up to 93.1%, and F- measure up to 92.9%. Significantly, we apply our methods to study four major diseases: Thalassemia, Diabetes, Malaria, and Asthma. Simulation results show that the proposed Deep Extreme Learning Machine (DELM) gives more accurate results as compared to previously published approaches.

The communications in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, e.g., WiGig (60 GHz), is considered as one of the main components of 5G and beyond 5G (B5G) networks. However, it is characterized by short range transmissions along with high susceptibility to path blockage, e.g., human shadowing. Thus, mmWave multi-hop relaying using device to device (D2D) connections turns to be an efficient solution to extend its communication range and to route around blockages. In this context, relay probing is essential to discover/explore the candidate multi-hop routes from source-to-destination and then select the best route among them. However, a trade-off exists between relay probing and the required overhead coming from mmWave beamforming training. In this paper, taking advantage of the multi-band μW /mmWave relay nodes, an efficient multi-hop relay probing scheme is proposed for mmWave D2D routing. In this scheme, the collected μW received signal strengths (RSSs) among the distributed relay nodes are used to estimate the probability of their mmWave signal-to-noise power ratios (SNRs) while considering line-of-sight (LOS) and non-LOS (NLOS) path availabilities. Then, based on a proposed probabilistic metric, a hierarchical search algorithm is proposed to jointly discover the relay nodes along the candidate multi-hop routes and enumerate the number of routes expected to maximize the spectral efficiency of the whole path from source-to-destination. This is done in an offline phase, and only the relay nodes located within the pre-selected multi-hop routes are requested to do online relay probing. Numerical analysis confirms the superiority of the proposed mmWave multi-hop relay probing scheme over the candidate techniques.

In the modern era business intelligence (BI) has a pivotal role in articulating a strategy and taking correct measures based on data. Business intelligence plays a pivotal role in an inevitable decision support system that enables the enterprise to perform analysis on data and throughout the process of business. Machine learning predicts the forecasting of future demands of the enterprises. Demand forecasting is one of the main decision-making tasks of enterprise. For demand forecasting first raw sales data is collected from the market, then according to data, the future sale/product demands are forecasted. This prediction is based on collected data that compiles through different sources. The machine learning engine executes data from different modules and determines the weekly, monthly, and quarterly demands of goods/commodities. In demand forecasting, its perfect accuracy is non-compromising, the more accurate system model is more efficient. Furthermore, we test the efficiency by comparing the predicted data with actual data and determine the percentage error. Simulation results show that after applying the purposed solution on real-time organization data, we get up to 92.38 % accuracies for the store in terms of intelligent demand forecasting.

Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) are emerging technology for disclosing multiple applications, such as oil, earth quick, and marine environments. All sensor nodes deployed in UWSNs operate through limited power batteries. Prolonging the network’s lifetime in such environments is an essential task and a hot topic among researchers. Multiple routing protocols have been designed to overcome the limited power issue and reduce energy consumption. Each routing protocol evaluated different parameters, but the issue is still unclear as to which one is better. In this study, we evaluated multiple routing protocols to investigate which is better in terms of parameters, such as packet delivery ratio (PDR), energy consumption, end-to-end delay, and the number of alive nodes. The simulation results indicate that Reliability and Adaptive Cooperation for Efficient UWSNs Using Sink Mobility (RACE-SM) performs better in all performance metrics than other routing schemes.

Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) contain sensor nodes that sense the data and then transfer them to the sink node or base station. Sensor nodes are operationalized through limited-power batteries. Therefore, improvement in energy consumption becomes critical in UWSNs. Data forwarding through the nearest sensor node to the sink or base station reduces the network’s reliability and stability because it creates a hotspot and drains the energy early. In this paper, we propose the cooperative energy-efficient routing (CEER) protocol to increase the network lifetime and acquire a reliable network. We use the sink mobility scheme to reduce energy consumption by eliminating the hotspot issue. We have divided the area into multiple sections for better deployment and deployed the sink nodes in each area. Sensor nodes generate the data and send it to the sink nodes to reduce energy consumption. We have also used the cooperative technique to achieve reliability in the network. Based on simulation results, the proposed scheme performed better than existing routing protocols in terms of packet delivery ratio (PDR), energy consumption, transmission loss, and end-to-end delay.

The departments of transportation worldwide are facing various challenges despite introducing and incorporating various vehicular features. One of such challenges is to make vehicles autonomous, intelligent, and capable of self-learning to evolve their knowledge repository. In this paper, human cognition is proposed to be implemented in vehicles so that they can perform human-like decisions. Therefore, the process of vehicular route decision is debated cognitively in order to provide route information intelligently. The in-vehicle routes provided by the GPS are not optimal and lack on-demand user requirements. GPS connectivity issues, in certain conditions, make it difficult for vehicles to take real-time decisions. This leads to the idea of self-decision by the vehicle controller. We propose a cognitive framework for vehicles to make self-decisions that use cognitive memory for storing route experiences. The framework strengthens the existing in-vehicle route finding capability and its provision in a more realistic manner. The user is provided with all available route-related information that is required for the journey. In addition, the route episodes are learned, stored, and accessed inside the cognitive memory for an optimal route provision. The vehicle learns about the routes and matures with route-experience by itself with the passage of time. In simulations, fuzzy modeling is used to validate the impact of cognitive parameters over static/conventional parameters. Moreover, artificial neural networks are used to minimize the error rate in learning to achieve cognitive route decisions. The proposed in-vehicle cognitive framework outperforms the existing route provision system that is inadequate and provokes the user's anxieties during driving. Besides, the proposed scheme gradually gets mature in delivering optimal as well as latest route-related information.

LoRaWAN is renowned and a mostly supported technology for the Internet of Things, using an energy-efficient Adaptive Data Rate (ADR) to allocate resources (e.g., Spreading Factor (SF)) and Transmit Power (TP) to a large number of End Devices (EDs). When these EDs are mobile, the fixed SF allocation is not efficient owing to the sudden changes caused in the link conditions between the ED and the gateway. As a result of this situation, significant packet loss occurs, increasing the retransmissions from EDs. Therefore, we propose a Resource Management ADR (RM-ADR) at both ED and Network Sides (NS) by considering the packet transmission information and received power to address this issue. Through simulation results, RM-ADR showed improved performance compared to the state-of-the-art ADR techniques. The findings indicate a faster convergence time by minimizing packet loss ratio and retransmission in a mobile LoRaWAN network environment.

One of the most important threats to today’s civilization is terrorism. Terrorism not only disturbs the law and order situations in a society but also affects the quality of lives of humans and makes them suppressed physically and emotionally and deprives them of enjoying life. The more the civilizations have advanced, the more the people are working towards exploring different mechanisms to protect the mankind from terrorism. Different techniques have been used as counterterrorism to protect the lives of individuals in society and to improve the quality of life in general. Machine learning methods have been recently explored to develop techniques for counterterrorism based on artificial intelligence (AI). Since deep learning has recently gained more popularity in machine learning domain, in this paper, these techniques are explored to understand the behavior of terrorist activities. Five different models based on deep neural network (DNN) are created to understand the behavior of terrorist activities such as is the attack going to be successful or not? Or whether the attack is going to be suicide or not? Or what type of weapon is going to be used in the attack? Or what type of attack is going to be carried out? Or what region is going to be attacked? The models are implemented in single-layer neural network (NN), five-layer DNN, and three traditional machine learning algorithms, i.e., logistic regression, SVM, and Naïve Bayes. The performance of the DNN is compared with NN and the three machine learning algorithms, and it is demonstrated that the performance in DNN is more than 95% in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-Score, while ANN and traditional machine learning algorithms have achieved a maximum of 83% accuracy. This concludes that DNN is a suitable model to be used for predicting the behavior of terrorist activities. Our experiments also demonstrate that the dataset for terrorist activities is big data; therefore, a DNN is a suitable model to process big data and understand the underlying patterns in the dataset.

A wireless body area network is a collection of Internet of Things–based wearable heterogeneous computing devices primarily used in healthcare monitoring applications. A lot of research is in process to reduce the cost and increase efficiency in medical industry. Low power sensor nodes are often attached to high-risk patients for real-time remote monitoring. These sensors have limited resources such as storage capacity, battery life, computational power, and channel bandwidth. The current work proposes a multi-hop Priority-based Congestion-avoidance Routing Protocol using IoT based heterogeneous sensors for energy efficiency in wireless body area networks. The objective is to devise a routing protocol among sensor nodes such that it has minimum delay and higher throughput for emergency packets using IoT based sensor nodes, optimal energy consumption for longer network lifetime, and efficient scarce resource utilization. In our proposed work, data traffic is categorized into normal and emergency or life-critical data. For normal data traffic, next-hop selection will be selected based upon three parameters; residual energy, congestion on forwarder node, and signal-to-noise ratio of the path between source and forwarder node. We use the data aggregation and filtration technique to reduce the network traffic load and energy consumption. A priority-based routing scheme is also proposed for life-critical data to have less delay and greater throughput in emergency situations. Performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated with two cutting-edge routing techniques iM-SIMPLE and Optimized Cost Effective and Energy Efficient Routing. The proposed model outperforms in terms of network throughput, traffic load, energy consumption, and lifespan.

A Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) is one of the most efficient technologies and is widely adopted for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The IoT consists of massive End Devices (EDs) deployed over large geographical areas, forming a large environment. LoRaWAN uses an Adaptive Data Rate (ADR), targeting static EDs. However, the ADR is affected when the channel conditions between ED and Gateway (GW) are unstable due to shadowing, fading, and mobility. Such a condition causes massive packet loss, which increases the convergence time of the ADR. Therefore, we address the convergence time issue and propose a novel ADR at the network side to lower packet losses. The proposed ADR is evaluated through extensive simulation. The results show an enhanced convergence time compared to the state-of-the-art ADR method by reducing the packet losses and retransmission under dynamic mobile LoRaWAN network.

Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging technology that offers promising solutions to modernize the traditional systems. It accords promising result in crystallizing smart cities, smart homes, smart industries, and smart environment. This article presents the smart waste management architecture for smart cities and efficient routing technique considering least delay for the architecture. In wireless sensor networks, end-to-end delay is one of the important Quality of Services (QoS) parameter to overcome delay in data communication. In this article, we consider end-to-end delay minimization in smart waste management application. The term “end-to-end delay” is defined as the total time taken by a single packet to reach the destination node. The proposed scheme considers the interference level, the length of the routing path, and the number of hops along the path. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms current schemes.

Research on wireless sensor network (WSN) has increased tremendously throughout the years. In WSN, sensor nodes are deployed to operate autonomously in remote environments. Depending on the network orientation, WSN can be of two types: flat network and hierarchical or cluster-based network. Various advantages of cluster-based WSN are energy efficiency, better network communication, efficient topology management, minimized delay, and so forth. Consequently, clustering has become a key research area in WSN. Different approaches for WSN, using cluster concepts, have been proposed. The objective of this paper is to review and analyze the latest prominent cluster-based WSN algorithms using various measurement parameters. In this paper, unique performance metrics are designed which efficiently evaluate prominent clustering schemes. Moreover, we also develop taxonomy for the classification of the clustering schemes. Based on performance metrics, quantitative and qualitative analyses are performed to compare the advantages and disadvantages of the algorithms. Finally, we also put forward open research issues in the development of low cost, scalable, robust clustering schemes.
